Are you the fairest of them all? “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of all?” “My queen, you are the fairest here so true. But Snow White is a thousand times more beautiful than you.” If those words bring back memories, you’re in for a treat. Community theatre company Performing Arts Headquarters will produce Snow White … and an unspecified number of dwarves in a musical. The company is calling on young, old and in-betweeners to audition. Director Mai Pyin says the show will be a “full-on pantomime” and she has called on everyone, regardless of their experience, to try out for a role. Auditions will be running until Saturday, March 11. Bookings are required. Call 5367 6864. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Mr Mammarella has been a long-time campaigner for a 24-hour public hospital in Melton, conceding infrastructure hadn’t kept up with the area’s booming population. He has also highlighted a need to duplicate the Melton Highway as a pressing issue. “I’m flattered by the support I’ve received from the local branches and the community members who have contacted me to encourage me to run,” Mr Mammarella said. Last week, Mr Nardella told Star Weekly the “difficult” time he’d had over claiming $100,000 in second residence allowance had influenced his decision to quit. But he refused to apologise or pay back the money, saying doing either would imply he had done something illegal or had rorted the system.
(Shawn Smits)
Former Melton councillor and four-time mayor Justin Mammarella is set to return to public life, saying he will run for the seat of Melton at next year’s state election. Mr Mammarella has confirmed he will seek preselection for the Labor-held seat after embattled MP Don Nardella revealed he would quit politics at next year’s state election. Mr Nardella’s decision followed the recent backlash over his claims for a second residence allowance designed for regional MPs. A senior Labor figure said Mr Mammarella would “highly likely” be the successful candidate, highlighting the need for the party to start preselecting candidates with strong local ties to the communities they’re elected to represent. The state government has been under increasing pressure over recent weeks after it was revealed 14 lower house MPs lived outside their electorate. They include Mr Nardella, who lives in Ocean Grove, 80 kilometres from Melton. He received 61.2 per cent of the vote after preferences at the 2014 state poll. “There’s a general want to see people live locally to the communities they’re representing,” the Labor figure said. “Justin moved into the area to start a family many years ago. His kids have grown up there and that’s the type of candidate needed. “You wouldn’t want to take anyone’s support for granted given what’s happening globally in politics. We want to see people who have a very strong connection to local communities.”

Stink over school yard plugged By Sumeyya Ilanbey Faulty septic tanks at Toolern Vale and District Primary School will finally be replaced after years of complaints about the “awful stench” and countless promises that the issue would be rectified. Student toilets at the school were last week blocked and the surrounding area cordoned off while the Education Department brought in portable toilets. One school parent, Ben, who asked that his
surname be withheld, told Star Weekly last Thursday the smell had become so bad in recent months that the only issue on everyone’s mind was the septic tank. He said parents were under the impression the tanks would be replaced over the summer holidays, but funding for the replacement was pulled at the eleventh hour. “I can say that pretty much every morning my wife goes to school and every morning parents are complaining about the septic smell – they say it stinks,” Ben said.
“We want the department to act. We were told the septic tank would be replaced over Christmas … this just makes you wonder what the department’s priority is if they haven’t been listening to us over these past few years.” In an email sent to parents and seen by Star Weekly Weekly, the school attributed the closure of the toilets to a “major septic issue”. It said a “full sterilisation” of the toilet blocks and surrounding areas would be carried out over the coming days. Ben said school council members had been
in contact with the department several times to get the issue sorted and have the tanks replaced. The department on Friday issued a statement saying the Victorian School Building Authority had been working closely with the school to fix the problem. Department spokeswoman Lito Visolini said portable toilets had been brought on site until the school toilets could be reopened. “The septic system has been repaired and work on replacing with a brand new system will begin [this] week. The toilet blocks have also been cleaned and tested by a hygienist.”

Construction has started on a multimillion dollar health hub at Melton. Health Minister Jill Hennessy and Melton MP Don Nardella last month ‘turned the first sod’ as works began on the new $21 million Melton Health and Community Services centre on Barries Road. Djerriwarrh Health Services, Melbourne Health-Midwest Area Mental Health Service, MacKillop Family Services, cohealth and Odyssey House Victoria will service the new centre with programs including Aboriginal health, chronic disease prevention, and mental health, drug and alcohol services. Prior to the 2014 state election, the Liberal government had announced it would commit $14 million for the centre, with construction due to be finished this year. When elected, the Labor government said it would honour this commitment, providing $14 million towards the health hub, with health service providers contributing the remaining $7 million. The health hub will have consulting suites, group meeting rooms, a gym, kitchen, staff work areas and a mental health tribunal room. It is expected to finish by April next year. Mr Nardella said bringing together a range of health and welfare providers under one roof would ensure services are better co-ordinated, more efficient and easier to access. Ms Hennessy said the works are important in one of the state’s “booming growth corridors”, where demand for timely health care is set to soar.

Shots were fired into the Westlake Drive house about 2am on Saturday, February 18. No one was injured. Police believe it was a case of mistaken identity and are hoping to speak with anyone who might have seen a motorbike, which appeared to be travelling in company with a V8-sounding vehicle, at the time.

Sarah Cafferkey was a beautiful, bright, bubbly young lady until her life was cruelly cut short. The 22-year-old was murdered in a Bacchus Marsh unit in 2012. Her murder has received widespread coverage and many know the details of her brutal death. But what they may not know is that Sarah had been verbally, emotionally and physically abused by an ex boyfriend. Speaking at Djerriwarrh Health Service’s Walk With Her event on Sunday, Sarah’s mother, Noelle Seery, shared Sarah’s story and urged everyone to take part in the conversation about respecting women. “I am grateful for each day that I wake up
knowing that, together, we, as a community, have the passion and ability to make a change, she said. “So if your partner, friend or family member doesn’t agree with you, don’t abuse them, don’t strike at them, and certainly don’t murder them. She said it is essential that women’s voices are heard. She thanked everyone “on behalf of my beautiful daughter, Sarah, your daughters, your sisters and your mothers, for their efforts to stamp out violence against women. Scores of people strode out at Hannah Watts Park to march for a safer, more equal, society. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Embattled MP makes his case You and Tarneit MP Telmo Languiller are being criticised for claiming a second residence allowance designed for regional MPs. What situation have you found yourself in? I’m in a very different situation to Telmo. I don’t know about his situation, I don’t want to know about Telmo’s situation, that is irrelevant to my situation. My situation is that I live in Ocean Grove. People have known that I’ve lived there since I broke up with my partner in 2014. And again with this journalist [who asked me about my living arrangements], I gave him the dates, I was open and upfront about all of this and will continue to be so. The break-up was really hard and I needed to be somewhere. I ended up at Ocean Grove and I changed all my details. My residential address is Ocean Grove; that’s where I live, that’s where I sleep and, yes, I’ve got a second residence for when I have duties in the city because coming in from Geelong is difficult in the morning. My situation is what it is. I claim the allowances and I did that under the rules and regulations Parliament has set down. When I applied, I took advice. Was I doing the right thing? What do you need? I would not have claimed, I would not have filled out the forms or provided the information that Parliament requested me to provide if that was not the case. I would not do that; I’m not like that. Can you understand why the public is feeling frustrated? There have been too many scandals involving politicians’ expenses and entitlements. Do you understand why people have this perception? When I applied for the second residence
(Supplied)
He acted within the rules, but if he had his time over he would not make the same claim, Don Nardella tells Sumeyya Ilanbey.
allowance, I actually checked to see if that was all OK. It’s a lot of money, absolutely. Did I have a second residence? Yes, I did. Do I live in Ocean Grove? Yes, I do. What did I do yesterday [February 28]? I wrote to the Clerk of Parliament. I’m still living at Ocean Grove but I’ll no longer claim the second residence allowance. In the real sense, I do understand what you’re saying to me [about public perception]. But the thing is, I’ve always been
upfront and honest with what I’ve done. I’ve followed the rules so it’s not a situation where I’ve claimed it in secret and tried to cover it up. The reason I’m in this position is because I told the truth to a journalist and subsequent to that there’s been a whole range of other stories.
journalists, anybody, to tell me to do that. My own honour would mean I’d pay that money back. But that’s not the case in this instance.
What do you think the issue is then? Why has it been blown out of the water like this? Do people think it’s appropriate and correct. I can only say I’ve done what I needed to do within the rules and regulations. People are saying, ‘Well you’ve done the wrong thing’. They’re entitled to that view. But something that’s legal, something I have demonstrated that I do, that I have done and continue to do is live in Ocean Grove. If people deem that to be incorrect that’s up to them, but it would not be something that’s incorrect. I haven’t tried to put the wool over your eyes.
That’s up to you, Don. Is there anything you’d like to apologise for? If I had done the wrong thing, if I had claimed the allowance improperly, if I had put in falsified documents, absolutely. But that’s not my situation. So it’s not a situation where it’s come to that, that I need to apologise.
Do you regret claiming the allowance considering the position you find yourself in? Look, the thing is when you go through changes in your life – and in my case they were major changes – you then have to make decisions in terms of what you do and they were some of the decisions I made. If I had my time, would I do it again? Probably not. Would I still live in Ocean Grove? I would. Does that make me a bad person? I don’t think so. If I had done the wrong thing, if I did not live in Ocean Grove, did not have another residence in the city when Parliament sits … yes, that would make me a bad man. Then I would have to pay back the money, absolutely; wouldn’t need a Premier, wouldn’t need anybody, the Parliament, you,
Are you prepared to apologise at least? What am I apologising about?
The Cabinet has proposed an independent adviser over these claims. Do you think that’s a good idea to ensure this don’t happen again? I support that, I’m happy with that. I think that’s a very good idea. I think that would clear up a number of these matters before they got to this situation. I haven’t seen the specifics, but I would probably also qualify under those rules that were discussed about where I live or if I had a second residence. We need to be accountable and I’m happy to be accountable but there also needs to be truth and reality to the situation and that’s the difficult part. Have the recent events sparked the decision to not stand for preselection? Yes, it has. I think it’s probably time Melton had somebody new, but it has influenced it. The difficult time I’ve had has influenced that decision. Every term you think about these things, but these circumstances have brought this up as a catalyst.

Quick move on Melton housing By Sumeyya Ilanbey Thousands of new house lots and three new suburbs will be fast-tracked in Melton as part of a state government plan to make housing more affordable in Melbourne’s growth corridors. As part of a pilot program to encourage developers to provide “inclusionary” housing in new developments, the government has also promised to deliver 100 affordable houses on government land in growth council areas. Rezoning across Melbourne’s growth councils will help enable the creation of more than 100,000 house lots, ultimately creating 17 new suburbs. The government has pledged to plan for key services, infrastructure and amenities in these suburbs, which include Kororoit, Mt Atkinson and Plumpton. The city’s north will experience the largest growth, with seven new suburbs expected to be created. The state government says median Melbourne land prices are about half those in Sydney and that these land releases will help maintain that gap. Treasurer Tim Pallas said the increase in housing supply would boost jobs in the construction industry and create jobs in growth corridors and established suburbs. Planning Minister Richard Wynne said the inclusionary housing pilot project would create 100 new social housing homes and help some of the state’s most vulnerable people. “This is all about ensuring there is plenty of new housing coming to market to suit the
varied needs of Victorian families, stay ahead of population growth and make new homes as affordable as possible,” Mr Wynne said. Opposition planning spokesman David Davis told reporters last week the government was not adding enough housing to Melbourne. “By the time these developments are ready, our population will probably be another 150,000 or more,” Mr Davis said.

Streamlining for Growth, a plan to make it easier for developers to subdivide land and speed up planning applications, will be extended for three years. The state government says cutting red tape will ensure planning projects can progress without unnecessary hold ups. In the past financial year, Melton council received 466 planning applications, with the average time taken to determine applications being 63 days. The average wait time at other growth councils in the same period was 95 days, according to the Know Your Council website. In a bid to ensure inefficiencies and unnecessary delays are identified and rectified, Melton council recently received $50,000 from the Victorian Planning Authority to review its planning application processes.

Tins rattle for others Red Cross volunteers will be out in force across Melton this month, rattling tins and raising both money and awareness. Volunteer Narelle Amor thanked people who had donated their time and money last year, and called for help again this month. “We rely solely on the generosity of donations, and we really appreciate everyone’s contribution to help an integral part of our community,” Ms Amor said.
“When you see a Red Cross uniform, these are all volunteers – busy mums, dads, nans and pas, just like you. We really need your help.” Ms Amor called on anyone aged more than 16 and “of good character” to rattle tins outside Melton McDonald’s. For more information, call Barry Leslie on 0408 508 868. Land sale wipes out town carpark A Moorabool council plan to sell off land used as a carpark has left business owners scratching their heads, predicting the decision will deliver a huge blow to local trade. A council spokeswoman said the block of land at 3 Graham Street, behind Flanagan’s Border Inn, had been up for sale for a number of years. A contract for its sale had been signed last year. The spokeswoman said the block was surplus to council requirements.
But one business owner, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Star Weekly the sale of the land would hurt local businesses. “It may not have been an official carpark, but over time, it has been … and we’re talking over many, many years,” he said. “It essentially allowed our customers to come into the area, generating business for us.” Almost all car parking spaces along Main Street and in the town centre are limited to one hour. The land is big enough for more than 100 car park spaces, the business owner said.
“One-hour carparks don’t allow enough time for people to attend restaurants or other businesses, such as the tax services,” the business owner said. He said car parking was a major problem in the town centre, and expects this to get worse as the population grows. “We’re trying to promote the area,” he said. “As you would appreciate, Bacchus Marsh is getting larger and larger. “Selling off land like this is short term gain for long term pain,” he said.
“Once we lose the block, we’ll be lobbying the councillors. “Some of us are scratching our heads … we don’t understand the decision.” When asked if the council had plans to increase parking time limits along nearby Main Street to compensate for the loss of carparking, the council spokeswoman said the vacant lot had never been an official carpark and there were no plans to review Main Street limits. She said the sale could take some months to finalise.

A grow glow for Melton school Green thumbs Jordan, Maggie and Seth spent last month planting fruit trees and greening Melton South Primary School. The grade 4 pupils were taking part in a Coles Helping Hands program to help reinvigorate the school yard. Coles Melton Station Square manager Richard Farrugia said staff and students planted fruit trees in wooden crates. He said the store also donated $1000 worth of Coles gift cards to the school’s breakfast program. “We always love getting together to support a local cause and hope our efforts make a real difference,” he said. Diverse ways to belong What does ‘belonging’ mean? Some 16 locals explain what belonging means to them in a video montage as part of Melton council celebrations of the city’s rich diversity. The I Belong exhibition at CS Gallery showcases the different people who make up Melton’s profile, raising awareness about the city’s “collective heritage”. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey encouraged people to visit the exhibition and hear the stories. “The city of Melton is home to people from more than 130 nations,” Cr Ramsey said. “Everyone belongs and has a place in our community, and we’ll be celebrating that and much, much more.” As part of Cultural Diversity Week, council
is also running a children’s poster competition, encouraging youngsters to express what diversity and harmony means to them. And it will host a Harmony Day celebration on Saturday, March 18, with activities including cultural dance and music performances, and multicultural cuisines. Winners of the poster competition will be announced during this event, 11am-2.30pm on the lawns of Caroline Springs library, 193 Caroline Springs Boulevard. The I Belong exhibition runs until Saturday, March 18, at the CS Gallery, 193 Caroline Springs Boulevard. Details: melton.vic.gov.au/diversity. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Boutique’s swansong By Sumeyya Ilanbey For almost two decades, Kathleen Swan poured blood, sweat and tears into her Pretty Essentials Boutique. She invested her life savings – and many of her adult years – getting the store going and giving locals “old-fashioned service”. What she never expected was for her business at Bakery Square to take a rapid downturn. She said when Woodgrove Shopping Centre expanded three years ago, her shop took an immediate hit – business went down by 50 per cent, and hasn’t recovered since. “There’s been a combination of things,” Ms Swan said. “I’ve lost a lot of suppliers because they went out of business, the fact that Woodgrove has grown so much, and the area was closed for a long time [for the Melton town centre redevelopment].” Ms Swan says she’s been trying to sell her business for a “wee while” now, but there’s been no interest. So with a heavy heart, she decided to close down by the end of the month. “I’m feeling a bit emotional because we thought we could find somebody to buy the shop fittings at least,” she said. “It’s sad … people are saying to me it is sad that you’re going, but my husband’s been retired for 18 months, and it’s time for us to do things together.” The Melton town redevelopment is aimed at revamping the once-vibrant town centre, where Bakery Square is located. Stage three of this project, which includes works on McKenzie street in front of the Melton library, has started, with works on Bakery Square, which is part of stage four, due to start next year. Council’s engagement and advocacy manager, Daniel Hogan, said the project would

connect the town centre better and encourage people to spend with local businesses. “The town centre has already developed a strong presence of professional services and businesses,” Mr Hogan said. “The tree-lined streets and pedestrian-friendly environment should ensure it remains a popular location for businesses, and in particular destination
businesses, which don’t necessarily rely on the high foot traffic of a large shopping centre.” Melton council has established a working group to ensure the Bakery Square area remains vibrant and viable while works are ongoing. Its next meeting will be on Thursday, March 23, at 7.30pm. For more information, call Terri Johnston on 9747 7200.
Local ’burbs in NBN roll-out Caroline Springs and Burnside will be among the first Australian suburbs to get NBN fibre-to-the-curb connections. The company will begin rolling out the service in the first half of next year and expects that at that time 100,000 homes and businesses across Australia will be ready to connect. As the name suggests, FTTC technology delivers fibre to the footpath, outside a home. The fibre is then connected to a small distribution unit, then uses the existing copper lines to deliver broadband to the premises. NBN won’t need to conduct works at each address, as has been the case with fibre-to-the-premises connections. NBN chief network engineering officer Peter Ryan said the FTTC technology could deliver the same speeds as FTTP. “We are delighted to be leading the world in deployment of FTTC technology,” Mr Ryan said. “Our goal is to deliver broadband in the most cost and time efficient manner possible, and FTTC will help us do this in many parts of the NBN network.” Coburg North businesses will be the first to trial the new technology in the second half of this year. NBN updated its website last week, providing information about the 700,000 Australian homes and businesses that will eventually FTTC rolled out to their areas. Details: nbnco.com.au Sumeyya Ilanbey

MY PLACE Val Turner is starring in a campaign that highlights the extraordinary work Melton women contribute to the community. The 59-year-old speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey about the Melton Women Making It Happen and life in Melton. You’ve been featured in this year’s Melton Women Making it Happen. What does this campaign mean to you?
What’s your connection to Melton? We moved here from Scotland in 1989 and we’ve lived here ever since. When we moved here first we were in Argyll Circuit and now we’ve moved up to [another area] in Melton.
I think it’s great that Djerriwarrh Health Services have started this campaign that’s just grown over years. And it’s good to see the women just jumping on board. Their main focus is to help stop violence against women.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton?
It’s just nice for the focus to be there. You get so wrapped up in what’s going on around you, so when there’s a campaign focused solely on women, it makes you look at life and rethink – “Gee, I’m really lucky. Maybe there’s something I can do to help.”
Probably some of the awesome restaurants we’ve got. We’ve also got some beautiful places

and the parks are lovely. I love the Botanic Garden and just love walking the garden – it’s beautiful. There are also some beautiful walks up through the forests in Eynesbury. And for restaurants? I’d have to say my favourites are Indian and Thai.

Why are events, like International Women’s Day, important for you and other women?
Over the years, Melton has grown so much, but it still has managed to somehow keep this really strong community heart it’s got. There are so many people willing to give their time and volunteer … it’s just a really, really nice place to be.
It would be good if there was more housing available for young people because that’s a real problem. Hope Street are fantastic and they’re doing a brilliant job, but it would be great for them to get more housing. Young people are trying to get themselves out of a rut and get stuff happening … but they’re competing against families and it’s really difficult for them.

emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face.
Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Arid during the 2017 Labour Day Long Weekend Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads.
Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways. Traffic on the Princes Freeway in particular is expected to be heavy with holiday makers travelling to the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast areas. Advice to motorists is to be patient when driving during this time.
He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000
Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances.
Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road.
Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the

What needs to be done to challenge gender stereotypes, which research links to violence against women? I think it needs to start right from the beginning. Kids get along with everybody – doesn’t matter their age, gender or background. Then they’re put into these stereotype boxes – the boys have to play with cars and the girls with dolls. But why? My four-year-old grandson looks great in a pink tutu. That was his dress of choice for a little while – why stop them from doing that? As they grow older, they’ll just accept people for who they are.

Soak up the variety of island style Oahu is home to much more than Waikiki’s ‘Gold Coast’, as Alexandra Laskie discovers. Thousands of travellers land at Honolulu and make a beeline for Waikiki to shack-up at a hotel for their entire Hawaiian sojourn. Considering the cost of hiring a car and, for Australian tourists, the mental hurdle of driving on the right-hand-side of the road, this approach makes sense. But to fall in love with diamond-shaped Oahu, Hawaii’s third largest island and home to the state capitol, Honolulu, you need a car. And the popular choice among holidaymakers appears to be a sexy, convertible Ford Mustang. Maybe it’s got to do with the “When in Rome” philosophy. Whatever it is, they dominate Honolulu airport’s hire carpark and they really are a lot of fun. Getting around the city is relatively easy, outside of evening peak hours. But be warned, rush hour traffic in Honolulu is the third worst in the US, according to locals. The Kalanianaole Highway takes drivers from Waikiki to the island’s beautiful beaches along the south-east coast. Within half an hour you’ll arrive at Sandy Beach, with its shore dumpers, turquoise waters and food trucks serving ahi poke – diced fresh tuna sashimi on rice with “special sauce”. Hanauma Bay is nearby. It’s incredibly popular with tourists owing to its photogenic crescent-shaped bay, first glimpsed from high above on a cliff. But you have to get there early to secure a car spot, because once the carpark is full, the beach is closed to fresh tourists for the rest of the day.
For years it was one of the most visited beaches in Hawaii, but it became a victim of its own beauty. The reef’s deterioration finally led authorities to intervene, first with a smoking ban in 1995 and then, in 1997, a visitor fee was introduced to pay for beach maintenance,
environmental studies and education programs. Beaches farther along the coastline are just as beautiful, albeit without the reef. A trip to the island wouldn’t be complete without checking out North Shore, known for
SHOWER SCREENS
its laid-back vibe and massive swells only the likes of Kelly Slater can conquer. To get there from Waikiki, head towards Pearl City (H1), then take the H2, and then follow the signs towards Haleiwa, North Shore’s shopping hub.

This little town is lined with plantation-era timber buildings painted in bright colours. It’s a good stop for lunch – people line up for a plate of garlic and butter-sautéed shrimp from trucks packed on the south side of the town, or for a shave ice at Matsumoto’s.
To see the swells, keep heading north to the famed Banzai Pipeline, or “Pipeline” to locals, where the average wave is about three metres. Turtle Bay Resort has a reputation as one of Oahu’s best hotels. It sits on prime real estate, with direct access to bay and surf beaches.
There are two golf courses on site, two pools, tennis courts and six restaurants. If you want to wake up listening to the sounds of gentle waves, book a beach cottage. The only obstacles between you and the sand will be a few scattered palm trees and hammocks.
TRAVEL
Waikiki’s “Gold Coast” feel may not appeal to everyone, but the neighbourhood has the widest range of options when it comes to hotels, eating out and shopping. One of the newest additions to the hotel scene in Waikiki is Surfjack Hotel. It’s housed in a 1960s Modernist building that has been refurbished and incorporates the best design elements of the era and North Shore beach culture. You won’t find it along Waikiki’s bustling beach strip, but a few blocks back in sleepy Lewers Street. It provides a welcome respite from the hordes of tourists. Whoever designed the pool had Instagram in mind. Mosaic tiles spell out, “Wish you were here” – surely a photo many guests have snapped from their balconies and sent to someone back home. One of the island’s best-loved chefs, Ed Kenney, heads the in-house restaurant Mahina & Sun’s, which serves inventive dishes such as skipjack tuna risotto using locally sourced and organic produce. Mr Kenny’s three other Honolulu establishments have almost taken over an intersection in Kaimuki, a sleepy residential neighbourhood a 10-minute drive from Waikiki. He’s made this spot a great place to come for breakfast (Kaimuki Suprette) or dinner (Mud Hen Water or Town). His style of food celebrates local Hawaiian cuisine. If dining at Mud Hen Water, the poi is a must. It’s made by pounding baked and fermented taro root until it turns into a watery paste. It’s a staple of most Hawaiian diets and is often eaten with rice. Rumour has it that the Obama family has purchased a holiday house on the island. If it’s good enough for a former president, it should be good enough for the rest of us.

Built for functional family living and with a backyard of gargantuan proportions, this is a house in which to hang your hat and finally say: “I’m home.” The triple-gabled façade with garaging for two cars sets a tone that is mirrored inside, one of a quality feel and an ambience that speaks of happy family living. All bedrooms have built-in-robes, the master with walk-in-robe and en suite. There is a separate lounge room with open-plan living in the hub of the home comprising kitchen, dining and lounge. A well-designed kitchen creates a traditional feel with stainless-steel appliances and stone benchtops ticking all the boxes. A study that could be converted into a bedroom is a great inclusion. Evaporative cooling and ducted heating are part of the package in this residence built with the discerning family in mind.
This double gabled, fully-bricked, house is in a great spot and has all the accommodation a single or even multi-generational family could need. Set in the heart of town, it’s close to daycare, schools, a medical centre and the local shopping centre. It has three huge living areas: rumpus, sunroom and lounge room with floating boards. A great timber kitchen (with dishwasher) and tiled family-meals area set the tone for relaxed family living. All four bedrooms have built-in wardrobes, and the main bathroom has a bath and separate shower. There’s also a powder room. On a prime piece of land this house includes slab heating, air-conditioning and a double carport.

The neatness of the garden out front is reflected out back, where a good-sized lawn is rimmed by riverstone garden beds planted with yukkas. Seller beware: doggies, moggies aren’t man’s best friend on sale day
(iStock)
Talk to real estate agents and most will agree that an important thing to bear in mind when selling a house is to have a plan when it comes to pets during potential buyers’ visits. Your doggie or moggie might be the cutest, best-behaved pet around, but buyers may not agree with you. Here’s why: 1. They may be scared of certain animals or breeds. Even normally placid animals may react unpredictably and, if kids are in tow, they could become anxious. 2. Animal odours and/or stains may be a problem, so it’s essential to get carpets cleaned and deodorised. And any fur – autumn is the main shedding season – must be removed. Some buyers may be allergic to fur and who wants to admire your nice house when they’re sneezing and wheezing everywhere? 3. Fussy buyers don’t want to see litter trays, indoors and out. Have a good poke around the backyard for droppings and get rid of them. You don’t want buyers to, heaven forbid, step in it – doubly so for non pet-lovers. While you’re there, check for holes; you don’t want someone’s ankle sprained. 4. Buyers can be on alert, with an animal present, to apply extra scrutiny so repair any scratch or bite marks on wooden or other surfaces. 5. They might simply be turned off by knowing an animal lives at your place, so remove pet beds, toys, and food and drink bowls from around the house and outdoors. If you’re serious about maximising the price you get for your property, the wisest course is to temporarily relocate your furry friend during inspections. Carole Levy

SPORT Lions eye top spot, home final and East Ballarat bats Darley may have already sealed a finals spot, but the Lions know the real task lies ahead. The Lions sealed their Ballarat Cricket Association spot through results in the last completed round, despite having a bye, but with top spot still up for grabs, the Lions are solely focused on defeating East Ballarat in the current round. It will be only the third time in 15 years in which the Lions will play finals and the first time since 2012-13. Lions coach Heath Pritchard said they were keen to finish as high on the ladder as possible and that a home final would be handy if it fell their way. The Lions are sitting in third and could finish anywhere in the top four depending on other results. Pritchard said it was exciting for the club. “You want to finish as high as possible, especially if weather does play a part in finals,” he said. “We’re focussed on getting the win and
controlling our own destiny. Whatever else happens, we’re in a good position in this game. If everything goes right, we’ll win. “Hopefully, we can play well and have another four weekends of cricket left. Going two weeks without a game, the Lions spent a lot of time in the nets. That work paid off on day one of the match against East Ballarat. The Lions made 8-336. “We tried to make sure we did a lot of batting and tried to make sure we stayed in form,” said Pritchard of the break. “We trained both weekends and had extra hits. It hasn’t done us any harm, if this performance says anything.” Pritchard was the pick of the batsmen making 97, but he said the most pleasing thing was the batting of Jake Wilkie (57) and Hasitha Wickramasinghe (36). “It was a well-executed innings,” said Pritchard of the side’s batting. “We went at six runs an over for the last 30 overs.
“Those two innings were more important than mine. “I went to No.4 with ‘Has’ opening, as we wanted to try something different. It seemed to – and it’s something that we might stick with. It doesn’t matter where I bat at my age.” Pritchard said he backed the bowlers in to do the job this weekend against East Ballarat, but was aware that team made 300 last time it batted at home. “Next Saturday, we’ve got to focus and make sure we bowl and field well,” he said. Melton ups the ante By Tara Murray Melton Rugby Club’s resurgence continues with the side’s promotion to A-grade in the Victorian Rugby Union competition. The club is one of four from the B-grade competition to move into A-grade. The Warriors were minor premiers last season, before losing the grand final to Ballarat, 18-13. Melton vice-president Liam Devlin said the move into A-grade was massive for the club in just their second year back in the competition. The club folded in 2015 due to a lack of numbers. “They looked at the clubs from last year and saw how they went,” he said. “The top four sides all moved up. “The competition is parallel to the metro two division. There’s eight to nine sides in premier division – they each have three sides apiece and they play in the metro competitions. “All the other clubs [including Melton] fall into the next division. One day, we’d like to have three sides and make the transition into premier grade. “We’re in the highest grade we can be in at the moment.” Devlin said there was a lot of changes to last season’s squad as more players were looking to get involved. “We had a few players from premier division decide to join our club due to the location,” he said, “We’ve built up standards and we’re now one of the strongest regional sides. “There’s about a 50-50 split, with about 15-20 new faces at training so far. “There’s been 35-40 players at training in the pre-season and that’s the biggest we’ve every had.” Devlin said the club would stick with one side this season and consider adding another side in 2018 or 2019. He said the club wants to ensure it can sustain the player numbers after not having a team in 2015. Mike Borrell is back on board as coach, with four senior players stepping up to leadership roles to help Borrell out. The club will play in two pre-season matches in the lead-up to the season. The first was on Saturday against Footscray, and then they will play last year’s division B-grade premiers Ballarat on March 18. Devlin said the increase in numbers wasn’t just at senior level – the junior program is also thriving. “The juniors are going really well,” he said. “We have 25 players in under-16s. The junior numbers are looking better than last year.
Greg Forster in action for Melton in a practice match against Footscray. (Shawn Smits)
“We’re considered the fastest growing club in Victoria, and last season were the seventh biggest club in the Victoria last season. “Last season, we had about 160 players.
“This year we’re looking at 200 players,” Devlin said. “We’re looking to keep getting bigger and become one of the biggest clubs in the state.”
Final day joy for Bulls, Romsey Bacchus Marsh and Romsey were the big winners, Diggers Rest Bulla and Rupertswood were the main losers, and Sunbury was the lucky team in the final round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Bacchus Marsh, which started the round in fifth position, secured a home semi-final with an outright victory against Rupertswood. The Bulls had already taken first innings points on day one and didn’t let up on Saturday. They piled on the runs early before declaring at 5-301. Peter Lalor finished with an unbeaten 155. Rupo needed to bat out the day to avoid an outright defeat, but despite a positive start was all out for 132. Karl Sutherland top-scored with 33. Three players took three wickets each for the Bulls. The win moved the Bulls into second spot above Gisborne, Sunbury and Diggers Rest Bulla. The Bulls will host Gisborne in the semi-finals. The Dragons will enter the finals on the back of a big win against Sunbury. Having made 7-306 on day one, the Dragons restricted Sunbury to 168. Jason Wilson took 3-9. Craig Ballinger almost played a lone hand for Sunbury, scoring an unbeaten 91. The Dragons made 3-55 in their second innings. Sunbury, which was on top of the ladder for much of the season, had a nervous wait to find out if it will play finals. It needed bottom side Romsey to knock off Diggers Rest Bulla and ladder leaders Riddell to beat Woodend. Sunbury’s wishes came true. Romsey’s 8-203 was enough to seal a win against the Burras, who could only manage 193. Taylor Stevenson was the pick of the bowlers, taking 5-59. As well as ending the Burras’ finals hopes, the win ensured Romsey stays in McIntyre Cup next season by moving above Rupertswood on the ladder. Rupertswood’s return to the top grade lasted just a season – its bottom finish means it will be relegated. Riddell will enter the finals as favourite on the back of eight straight wins. It defeated Woodend on Saturday and will face Sunbury in the other semi-final.

With state in their wake, swim pair take on the nation Melton Swimming Club duo Jack Carr and Karlos Nuestro will take on the nation’s best swimmers at the Australian age group championships next month. The two have had a successful season in the pool, winning multiple medals, and both would love to add to them at the top level. It’ll be the second straight year Carr has competed at the titles. This year he’s competing in six events, up from four last year. He’ll swim the 50 and 100-metre freestyle, 100 and 200-metre butterfly, 200-metre individual medley and 100-metre backstroke. Carr has set his aim high after not performing how he would have liked last year. “Not as good as I would have hoped; my birthday is just before the event. I swim with one age group then have to swim up in the next age group for the championships. “[Coach] Rob Neilson is trying to work on the mental side of things and encouraging me
to stay mentally strong. I’m hoping to make the finals of the 50 and 100-metre freestyle. “Rob wants me to get at least close to getting a medal in the 200-metre IM, so I’m working really hard for it.” The 15-year-old also qualified for the open national championships for the first time, in the 50-metre backstroke. He currently has the 25th-fastest time in Australia since July and is unsure whether he’ll swim both championships as they directly follow each other. Carr also recently won three gold medals and a silver in the Victorian sprint titles, winning the 50-metre backstroke, freestyle and butterfly. Nuestro will compete at the national age group championships for the first time, swimming the 100 and 200-metre breaststroke for his age group. “My goal is to a least make the finals,” he said. “It’ll be an experience as it’s my first time
swimming at national level. I think my times are good enough to make finals.” Since May last year, he’s been ranked the fastest swimmer for his age group in Victoria in the 100 and 200-metre breaststroke and 200-metre individual medley. The 12-year-old has been part of squad swimming for the past three years. He says he started swimming because his mum wanted him to have that skill. Meanwhile, Melton Swimming Club has come out on top at the recent metro west district championships. The club won both the male and female categories to cement itself as the most successful club in the metro west district. The club won 53 gold, 35 silver and 30 bronze medals. Swimmers also set eight new district records. Tara Murray
Two slumps, one regret By Tara Murray It was a case of so close but so far for Melton in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s east-west competition. Needing a win against second-placed Balwyn in the final round and have other results go their way to play finals, the Lions were again left to rue missed opportunities. Choosing to bat, Balwyn skipper Liam Murphy led the way with an unbeaten 103 in the side’s total of 5-206. The Lions had a half opportunity to dismiss Murphy when he was on 20, but failed to take it. Ashley Sweet was the only Lions bowler to pick up multiple wickets, with two. Melton looked in control early in its chasing innings before two collapses left it stranded 22 runs short of Balwyn’s total. The first meant the Lions went from 2-128 to 5-130; in the next, they lost their last five wickets for 14. Lions playing coach Nathan Geisler said it was a disappointing finish to the season. “We got ourselves into a good position and needed about four runs an over for the last 20 overs. “We lost a bit of momentum when I went out then we lost 3-2. The wicket was a little dry and hard for new batsmen to get in on. We were in a position to win the game but didn’t take the little opportunities that presented.” Michael Alexander top-scored for the Lions with 61. The Lions finished the season in eighth spot, two points outside the top six. Taylors Lakes, which started the final round in ninth, took sixth spot. Geisler said despite a dramatic improvement on the previous 12 months, the side was disappointed to have not played finals after being top-three heading into the Christmas break. The Lions had won five of their first seven games, including one outright. “We had only one win after Christmas, which was disappointing,” he said. “At the start of the year we had hoped to play finals. Being such an even competition, we knew we had to bank as many wins as possible for Christmas knowing we had a tough run home. We just missed out. We needed just one result to go our way. We beat the sides below us but we couldn’t beat the sides above us, so we deserved to finish where we did.” Williamstown, Balwyn, Noble Park, Altona, Werribee and Taylors Lakes make up the top six. Meanwhile, the Lions women’s side is through to finals of the Victorian Premier Cricket seconds. The Lions needed a final round win against Coburg to ensure their spot in the top four. In the end, they did it with ease. The Lions made 2-229 with Stephanie Theodore contributing an unbeaten 95. Coburg made 128 in reply. The Lions face Carlton-Brunswick in a knockout semi-final on Saturday. 50 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 7, 2017

St Anthonys season came to a disappointing end with a big loss to Macedon in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B grade. Macedon had made 221 on day one and secured the win with ease on Saturday, bowling the Saints out for 124. Saints skipper Cameron Clayton top scored with 36. The Saints finished seventh, with four wins for the season. Bacchus Marsh’s big win against Ashfield wasn’t enough to gain it a finals spot, with the Bulls finishing fifth.
Netball
Reigning Riddell District Netball League coach of the year Ciara Stewart has been named the RDNL senior interleague coach for 2017. In a new approach, the league will appoint the coach of the year as its interleague coach. Stewart, in her first year in the competition, took the Cats to last year’s RDNL grand final. Michelle Rix will coach the under-17 side. In the Ballarat Netball League, the senior side will be coached by Annie McCartin, who has been the BNL coach of the year the past two seasons.
Bowls
Melton finished its Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 season with a thrilling win against Altona Sports. Melton, which faded in the second half of the season, won 78 (14)-75 (4), consigning Altona Sports to relegation. Melton finished seventh, 31 points outside the top four.
WSCCCA
Rockbank sealed a finals spot in the Western Suburbs Churches & Community Cricket Association’s A.E Lowe Shield with a hard-fought win against St Johns. Needing 161 for victory, the Rams reached the target with two wickets in hand in just 25 overs. The Rams, who finished fourth, will play Eynesbury Eagles in a knock-out semi-final. The Eagles easily accounted for Altona Sports on Saturday. Defending 243, the Eagles restricted Altona Sports to 142.

Royals claim winning run as a harbinger of better days Melton South Primary School Cricket Club finished its season in the perfect way – with a win against cross town-rivals Melton Centrals. While the Royals won’t play finals after coming sixth in Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1, they will finish the season as one of the in-form teams of the competition, having won their past four games. Royals president Paul Davies said the last four rounds had given the players confidence they were heading in the right direction. The Royals only win prior to that had been against County West, which forfeited. “We knocked off two teams in the top four,” Davies said. “We’ve got our seconds, thirds and fourths all playing finals so we’re starting to show we have some depth. “The aim now is to show that form from the start of the season and look to play finals with our firsts.”
The Royals ended the season with a 19-run win against finals bound Centrals. Having made 9-285 on day one, the Royals restricted the Centrals to 266. James Robertson and Paul Hetherington took three wickets each for the Royals. For Hetherington, the three wickets went with his 134 knock on day one. Davies said it was the first time in about five years they’d had someone make a century in the first XI. “He has been our form player in the ones all season,” he said. Davies said the club would be aiming to keep this year’s playing squad intact. They will do it with a new coach, with Blake Ivory standing down after four years. “Blake has done a fantastic job the last four years,” Davies said. “Each year, at least three sides have made finals. Having been in the role for four years, he’s decided its time for someone
with fresh opinions and new ideas to take the firsts to that next level. At this stage he has indicated that he will play on.” Davies said they would be looking for a playing coach. The good year for the club included the return of the junior program, which Davies said they were planning to expand. “Most of the players had never played, so to get three wins was tremendous for them,” he said. “We’re already looking forward and looking to get more teams up and running. These kids are already looking at returning.” Anyone interested in coaching the Royals should contact Davies on 0418 535 211. Meanwhile, Melton Centrals will host Williamstown Imperials in a knockout semi-final this weekend. Tara Murray

Thrilling finals set the scene Western Jets’ youngster Madison Lister, seventh from left, was one of 12 players representing each TAC Cup girls club at the season launch. (AFL Victoria)
Countdown for TAC girls By Lance Jenkinson The advent of the new TAC Cup girls competition will provide future AFL Women’s players with an elite pathway to the big league. The next generation will be more skilful, more athletic and more attuned to the intricacies of playing football at the elite level once they have completed their apprenticeships in the competition that was launched last week. Shane Sexton has long been the regional manager of the Western Jets – employed to recruit, develop and nurture the next wave of star western suburbs footballers – and he is already impressed by the talented girls coming through his club’s ranks. Sexton got to glimpse some of the young players further down the development track when the Jets played a practice game against Calder Cannons … and he has no doubts that the future of women’s football will be bright. “I don’t think it’s the unknown any more,” Sexton said. “By and large, they’re [the Cannons program] a year in front of us. “And the skill of some of their girls – some of our kids were really good too – but they had a couple of players who were right foot, left foot, take a mark over your head … clearance work at the stoppages was impressive, it was just
outstanding footy. The girls have got the talent, and there’s going to be enough of them coming through. “Some of those girls I saw last weekend, in a couple of years’ time, they’ll be playing AFL women’s footy, no doubt about it.” Western Jets was involved with youth girls football last season. They teamed up with Geelong Falcons to form a combined side to play against a selection of other TAC Cup clubs. “Those girls played in a series of matches last year,” Sexton said. “This year it has developed again. “Now every TAC Cup club has got a team,” he said. The inaugural TAC Cup girls competition will feature 12 clubs and the season will be played over five rounds. The premiership team will be the side that finishes on top of the ladder, with no finals to be played in the competition’s first season. The long-term vision for the competition is to eventually run it side-by-side with the TAC Cup. At the moment, though, it would be seen as too much of a burden on local clubs to overcome losses of their elite players, so that dream is on hold. “It’s open-ended in terms of how quick this
will develop, but there could be a fully fledged TAC Cup girls competition not too far down the track,” Sexton said. “It was purposely set up to start before the domestic season so the girls can go back to play for their local clubs. “When the time is right and there are sufficient girls in clubs all over the place, they’ll extend the season.” The Western Jets will play its first game on March 18 against the Greater Western Victoria Rebels. The side will be coached by Bridget Barker, who also works in development at North Melbourne Football Club. Barker and her assistants have been working with a training squad of about 70 Jets hopefuls, with the first team to be picked for round one next week. “Bridget’s really enthusiastic and is doing a great job,” Sexton said. “She’s come with a fairly significant football background. “Out of a staff of about 10 people we’ve put together, we’ve only got two males. “We wanted to have a strong female presence in terms of our coaches. “It’s going to be a very significant day on March 18 because it’s going to be the first time that it’s ever happened.”
If the division 2 and 3 grand finals are anything to go by, the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s division 1 grand final will be a thriller. The two lower grade grand finals were both decided by less than three shots on Saturday, with no team able to take control of their matches. In division 2, Bacchus Marsh came out on top against Diggers Rest by two shots, 99-97. Craig McAuliffe and John Fordham led the winning rinks for Bacchus Marsh, 29-21 and 23-20 respectively. Rod Treweek and David Odgers were the winning skips for Diggers Rest. The division 3 grand final was almost as close, just three shots separating Lancefield and Macedon at the end. Lancefield will now be hoping to claim the first of two premierships in the next week. Lancefield, had Michael Walsh and Keith Webb as winning skips, claiming two of the three rinks in its 75-72 scoreline. Lancefield’s other Saturday side faces Gisborne in the division 1 grand final at Kyneton Golf this week. The midweek pennant grand finals are also played this week, with Kyneton Golf taking on Gisborne in division 1, Trentham playing Kyneton in division 2, and Macedon matched with Kilmore in division 3.
