High tea farce By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton council and mayor Sophie Ramsey have spent $20,000 of ratepayer money on a two-hour high tea event to celebrate International Women’s Day. The extravagant invite-only event, which cost about $2500 every 15 minutes last Friday afternoon, only came to public attention at last week’s council meeting when Watts ward Cr Lara Carli questioned Cr Ramsey and council officers about the purpose and price of the event. She asked for a detailed report to be presented at the next council meeting. Requests for funding the $20,000 event were not brought before a public council meeting, prompting questions about transparency. “I’m all for celebrating the great work that the women of the City of Melton do – that was not my concern at all,” Cr Carli said. “My main concern is the amount of money that would be spent on this event. It hasn’t been budgeted for and residents weren’t made aware. “When we’re spending ratepayers money in this way, we should be transparent about it and it should go through an ordinary meeting.” Cr Carli, along with fellow female councillors Kathy Majdlik and Melissa De Santis, did not attend the event. It’s the second time an event of this scale has been organised by Melton council for IWD, with the first held two years ago, again at the request of then-mayor Cr Ramsey. Last year’s IWD celebrations included the Melton Women Making It Happen campaign and a Walk With Her event that encouraged the public to show their support for a safer and respectful community. Council’s legal and governance manager Christine Denyer said The Women of Melton High Tea, held at The Willows, had not been budgeted for and will be funded from the overall events budget allocated for the 2016-17 financial year. The council would not answer Star Weekly’s questions about why the event was not put to a vote at a council meeting, how the sum could be justified on a two-hour event, or how many guests were City of Melton residents. Ms Denyer said a report about the event would be presented at next month’s council meeting. “Women have been invited from all sectors of the municipal community, including commercial and not-for-profit,” Ms Denyer said. “In addition, all secondary schools in the municipality were invited to nominate two female representatives to attend the event with

a chaperone. “It is hoped that the event will provide mentoring and inspiration to those future female leaders of the community, as well as recognition for those already providing valuable service.” When Star Weekly asked Cr Ramsey about the $20,000 price tag, she declined to answer questions from the media “until a report was presented at a council meeting”. In a statement, she said the high tea was a “rare

opportunity, a deliberate and civic celebration” of female leaders from the municipality. “In a year which has been incredibly challenging to women globally, where advancements for women appear to have been eroded, where the achievements of women have been marginalised, council is determined to stand strong for the principle of gender equity, to personify the theme of International Women’s Day and ‘be bold for change’,” it read.

Residents plan Nardella protest Melton residents will stage a protest at Don Nardella’s Alexander Street offices next Thursday, calling on him to quit politics if he won’t pay back $113,000 he claimed in entitlements. This is the latest attack on the MP who was forced out of the Labor Party caucus last Tuesday for refusing to pay back the money, and dumped from a taxpayer-funded overseas trip he was due to go on later this month. The opposition cranked up at its attack on the now-independent crossbencher in Parliament last week, including parking a caravan at the back of Parliament, with a sign that said “gone rorting” and a photo of the MP. Mr Nardella’s former Labor colleagues have also weighed in, calling on him to quit politics if he won’t pay back the money he claimed in second residence allowances. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has accused Mr Nardella of claiming a second residence allowance while living in Ballarat before moving to Ocean Grove, saying his “total rorts bill” was likely to be closer to $250,000. “It is my understanding that Mr Nardella has claimed the second residence allowance, not just for his time supposedly in a caravan in Ocean Grove, but also for the years that he lived in Ballarat,” Mr Guy said. “That’s why we need to have this documentation released. That’s why the truth needs to come out.” Mr Guy is pressuring Premier Daniel Andrews to release the travel logs of Mr Nardella and former speaker Telmo Languiller, who also claimed a second residence allowance while living in Queenscliff. Mr Andrews told Parliament he did not have the MPs travel logs or diaries. Meanwhile, Liberal Party polling revealed 94 per cent of 2000 Melton residents surveyed wanted Mr Nardella to resign. And if a by-election were to be held now, 23.1 per cent said they would vote ■ Continued

Christmas market plan booted By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton council has backflipped on its decision giving the green light for a Christmas market at Plumpton. Councillors last week overturned approval for a Sunday market from September until December at the Melbourne Christmas Tree Farm on Leakes Road, with some saying it would be an “eyesore” and exacerbate the Leakes Road “death trap”. Councillors were divided on the issue last month, when mayor Sophie Ramsey used

her casting vote to approve the application, despite objections from nearby landowners, who expressed concern about traffic and safety along Leakes Road and Melton Highway. Then, at last week’s meeting, ward councillor Lara Carli moved to rescind the approval and deny the market a permit. Councillors Steve Abboushi, Michelle Mendes, Melissa DeSantis and Kathy Majdlik (who was absent from last month’s meeting) voted in favour of Cr Carli’s motion. Cr Carli said she was concerned the permit had been granted despite vehement objections

from ward councillors (councillors Carli and Mendes), as well as residents. “There were a lot of things that raised red flags for me,” Cr Carli said. “I believe the proposal would create traffic and safety issues on Leakes Road and Melton Highway. “That’s already a death trap there, and to have more people visiting this market is just going to [make it] worse and worse.” She said residents raised issues including noise, rubbish, excessive vehicle movement, and loss of property values. “The proposal would adversely impact on the

agricultural uses in the area … and create an eyesore when viewed from Leakes Road.” But council officers previously ruled out traffic once a week as a safety concern; they found the proposal would complement existing rural and agricultural activities, and stated there was no evidence to support falling property values as a result of the market. Melbourne Christmas Tree Farm has twice sought approval for a farmer’s market previously, but was knocked back both times. The most recent application was for a much smaller market.

Wanted: precise police numbers The state government and Victoria Police remain tight-lipped on when Melton will get extra police, amid calls from councillors for swift action. Melton council has decided to write to Police Minister Lisa Neville requesting details of how many new officers will be deployed to Melton and Caroline Springs and – “given the escalating level of anti-social behaviour” – that she review her position on the opening hours of the Caroline Springs police station. The approach to Ms Neville, moved by Cr Steve Abboushi, was unanimously endorsed by all councillors. But in a statement to Star Weekly Weekly, Ms Neville refused to disclose any details about the commitment of Victoria Police and the state government to Melton or when announcements would be made. “We are not only funding the additional police but, alongside the police association, we have signed up to an allocation model so that we can ensure new police go to those communities with the highest need,” Ms Neville said. “As the chief commissioner has indicated, one of those communities with high needs is Caroline Springs.” Last December, the state government announced that more than 3000 police officers would be recruited in the next four years, with more than 2000 slated for front-line duties. Victoria Police spokeswoman Lisa Beechey said there were no plans to review Caroline Springs police station counter hours, saying the organisation preferred to have police out on the road detecting and responding to crime rather than sitting in police stations.

Baby deaths fallout ongoing By Rania Spooner, The Age Health authorities have investigated 40 doctors, nurses and other professionals over the baby deaths scandal at Bacchus Marsh Hospital. Eighteen months into the investigation, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority has revealed that immediate action has been taken against five practitioners, who have had restrictions placed on their ability to treat patients while investigations continue. Another six practitioners have had conditions placed on their ability to treat patients, six were cautioned and others had no further action taken, including 11 practitioners who are no longer registered. Five staff had quit while they were under investigation, it was revealed. The regulator finalised probes into 23 practitioners, while 17 are still under investigation. Reviews into the cluster of baby deaths at the Djerriwarrh Health Service previously identified at least 11 that were potentially avoidable. The AHPRA investigation, backed by a team of clinical experts, examined thousands of pages of clinical records and interviewed dozens of staff members. In total, 96 cases were referred to AHPRA over the scandal, including those relating to 13 doctors, 23 midwives and nurses and four other medical staff. A spokesperson for AHPRA said privacy laws prevented them from releasing details of actions taken against individual practitioners.

“Our focus has been on ensuring each investigation is thorough and fair, and that they are properly informed about the outcome of an investigation,” AHPRA said in a statement. “Djerriwarrh has informed us of the improvements that the health service has made … this has been sufficient to address the Boards’ concerns about their standards.”

‘‘

Our focus has been on ensuring each investigation is thorough and fair - AHPRA

’’

The regulator also said it had improved how it assessed and managed notifications about medical practitioners in the wake of the scandal. Maurice Blackburn medical negligence lawyer Dimitra Dubrow, who represented affected families, said it was reassuring to know AHPRA was conducting a thorough investigation, but urged the regulator to move faster on complaints in the future. This could also assist victims with their ongoing fight for compensation, she added. A Djerriwarrh Health Services spokesman said “profound change” had taken place at the service since October 2015. “As well as staff capability, there has been significant investment in infrastructure and systems support, totalling more than $30 million,” he said. The $30 million includes $10.6 million for new operating theatres and expanded maternity services.”

Good to go at crossing It was a green-light day recently for the Taylors Hill Community Safety Group which has been campaigning for a set of pedestrian lights at a “dangerous” crossing for the past four years. President Ian Herbert said many residents from the Taylors Hill Retirement Village and pupils from the Taylors Hill Primary School were forced to dodge fast-travelling cars on Calder Park Drive to get to and from their destination. The pedestrian lights, near the Taylors Hill Youth and Community Centre, were finally switched on last month following years of lobbying from the safety group, Taylors Hill

Primary School and Watts ward councillor Lara Carli. “This is absolutely fantastic,” Mr Herbert said. “So many people have commented that they feel safer since the pedestrian lights were turned on.” Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the community played a big role in having the lights installed. “The installation of the pedestrian lights calms traffic movement, making this stretch of road safer and easier to navigate for pedestrians and road users,” Cr Ramsey said. “It’s a great win for our community.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

A wheely good idea These Sydenham-Hillside Primary School pupils are taking out their bikes, scooters and skateboards and hitting the footpaths as part of national Ride2School day. Melton council is encouraging students across the municipality to do the same. Mayor Sophie Ramsey has urged parents to leave the car at home and get their children to ride, skate or scoot to school this Friday. “Physically active children are healthier, happier and more socially connected than

children who have passive lifestyles, and are more likely to be active adults, resulting in health benefits throughout their lives,” Cr Ramsey said. “For families who can’t ride the whole way, the Part Way is OK program is a great option – pick a point to park the car and ride the rest of the way.” For advice, tips and more information on Ride2School day, visit ride2school.com.au. for Labor, 44.3 per cent for Liberal, 5.3 per cent for Greens and 14.2 per cent for One Nation. The numbers are consistent with a statewide ReachTEL poll conducted on March 2 – a few days after Mr Languiller and Mr Nardella resigned from their speaker and deputy speaker roles – which revealed Labor trailed the Coalition 46 to 54 per cent on a two-party preferred basis. Mr Andrews has refused to comment on the results of the Liberal Party and ReachTEL polling, but conceded “community expectations have not been met”. There were fears Mr Nardella’s resignation from the Labor Party could create further chaos, with the move leaving the government with 46 seats in the 88-seat lower house – giving it a narrow majority. But Mr Nardella last week told Star Weekly he would continue supporting the party and vote in line with the government. “The Labor Party got me elected; it wasn’t Don Nardella that got me elected. I will continue to vote and support the Labor Party,” he said. “The Premier made it clear to me that if I was not going to pay back the allowance that I was not to remain in the caucus and I accepted that,” Mr Nardella said. “I have been in the Labor caucus since October 1992 and it’s hard for me not to be there any longer.” A move by the opposition to set up a parliamentary inquiry, in addition to an

No decision on off-leash park By Sumeyya Ilanbey

voted to refer the request to be reviewed as part of the recreation reserve masterplan, with Cr Sophie Ramsey suggesting the halving of the park and a reduction in cost to $50,000. This was despite a council officer recommendation that 4000-square-metres should be regarded as a minimum area for off-leash dog parks. The officer’s report was presented at last week’s council meeting in response to a request by Cr Michelle Mendes in December to investigate options for an off-leash dog park at Diggers Rest. She told last week’s meeting she agreed to

Melton councillors have stalled on approving funds for an off-leash dog park at Diggers Rest, opting for it to be reviewed as part of the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve masterplan. More than 35 residents petitioned the council asking for councillors to approve $87,500 in funding for a 4000-square metre dog park at the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve in this year’s budget. Funding the park in this year’s budget was one of three options put forward by council officers. But at last week’s council meeting, councillors

slashing the size of the park in half, but wanted her community to be consulted on the location. Speaking with Star Weekly, Cr Mendes said it was important to look at the size and population of Diggers Rest before approving a 4000-square-metre off-leash dog park. “We don’t want to provide something that’s too big,” she said. “But I do realise it’s a growing community.” Diggers Rest resident Karen Brewer, who lobbied for a dog park, said she believed a 2000-square-metre park would be adequate for the area, but she wanted councillors to approve funding the park in this year’s budget.

“We need somewhere to take our dogs where they can interact with each other and we can have a chat with other residents,” Ms Brewer said. “Dog parks are a great way for people to meet and socialise.” Consultation for the next phase of the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve masterplan is expected to start within four weeks. When asked why she didn’t support the petition, Cr Mendes told Star Weekly she had received the petition on the night of the council meeting and hadn’t had time to read it. “You can’t hand a petition on a Monday night and expect things to go a particular way.”

Two girls and their dog Forty former racing dogs strutted their stuff at a special adoption day in their honour, hoping someone would fall in love with their bashful eyes and gentle demeanour. Within 20 minutes of the recent rescue mission, 23 greyhounds had been snapped up bound for new homes. But come the end of the Greyhound Adoption Program’s (GAP) event, Roy, Bill and Mick remained. A Facebook plea by GAP to find Roy and his fellow greyhounds a home was seen by Taylors Hill sisters Makenzie and Rylee, who decided Roy would make a perfect companion for Stuey, the greyhound they adopted about a year ago. They knew their dad was against the idea, so they decided to write him a letter. “Dear Dad, we would like to compose this letter to you because we have been thinking about getting a friend for Stuey,” they wrote. “Today (4th March) we saw … that GAP had

an adoption day and all greyhounds that were at the adoption day got adopted accept (sic) Roy. Even though Roy is 9 years old (young), he deserves to be in a caring family … we felt really sorry for him, and so did Mum,” the girls, aged 9 and 12, wrote. The girls pooled their pocket money – $49.80, to be precise – to go towards GAP’s $75 adoption fee. “We hope you say yes and we can get Roy. P.S. Rylee and I will start cleaning up his poop,” they wrote. Mum Nicole Tresize said the girls’ tactic didn’t work on dad David, but it was enough to convince her. She took them out to GAP’s base in Seymour to collect Roy last Tuesday. “He’s [Roy] settled in really well,” Nicole said. “But I don’t think they’ll ever pick up the poop.” Alexandra Laskie

MY PLACE As a little girl, Gabrielle Shanahan would visit the Country Women’s Association Geelong branch with her mother. She’s now with Bacchus Marsh CWA and has been president, treasurer and secretary at various times. She speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey. I moved to Myrniong in 1973. Before that I was living just outside Geelong. I came to Myrniong after I married my husband – he was a fourth generation Myrniong farmer. What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool? I like the fresh air, the open spaces and the country people – they’re very friendly and easy to get along with. I’ve never thought about moving anywhere else. We’ll be here until we’re carried out in a box, I think. I have a certain affinity for the land and the farming area. What would you change about the area? Well, the only change I’d like to see is the traffic in Bacchus Marsh to be reorganised in some way, especially at peak times. Have you ever been there during the school knock-off? The streets are quite crowded and the traffic flow is rather slow. There’s so much hesitation at the corner of Gisborne Road, Grant Street and Main Street that I feel like traffic lights would be an advantage. If there was a definite time you knew you could cross, that was organised by traffic lights, I think that would improve the situation there. Where’s your favourite place to hang out? I don’t have any great preference for anywhere. I don’t dine out a great deal, and I don’t have a cafe culture. I mainly meet my friends at the CWA in Bacchus Marsh.

How did you get involved with the Country Women’s Association? I used to accompany my mother when she used to go. When I started work, I joined the branch near Geelong where I lived. And when I moved to Myrniong, I transferred to Bacchus Marsh. Mum came and lived with me for a few years, and we made a lot of good friends [at the Bacchus Marsh CWA]. What have been some of your most memorable moments with the CWA Bacchus Marsh branch? Well I can think of lots of things over the years, but one of our biggest achievements was raising the funds and organising the Pioneer Women of Bacchus Marsh book. The book was produced in conjunction with the Bacchus Marsh historical society, and it was launched about 12 months ago. But it took eight years to do the research and gather the money to print it. We like to highlight the role women played in the early development of the area. Why would you encourage others to get involved with the CWA? I think you make great friends of like mind, and you have an opportunity to work together to help the community in whatever ways are necessary at the time. CWA has been involved in a lot of things over its 85 years. At the moment, we’re making cushions for breast cancer patients.

Pryor achievements

Motorcycles, booze in sights

By Sumeyya Ilanbey At just six years of age, John Pryor would ride his bicycle 10 kilometres to school and then back. At 11, he’d work 12-hour shifts on his grandparent’s farm at Harkness Road, Melton, stacking hay bales and cutting firewood with an axe at weekends. The 79-year-old says he built up a lot of a stamina as a young boy. So when he went on to win several races as a professional runner, not many were surprised. “I did a lot of physical stuff when I was younger, and when we had family get-togethers, they always had races for kids and I did pretty well in those,” Mr Pryor said. He started running professionally in 1956, but his big achievements rolled in when he made a comeback in 1977 after taking a break for a few years. In 1978, Mr Pryor broke four middle-distance running world records, and broke his own world record for the imperial mile. The following year he was crowned the Victorian Professional Runners Association’s athlete of the year and best middle-distance runner. But one of his proudest achievements, which is no longer running, was being on the founding committee of a western-regions sports Olympics. He said it was a great way for the region’s youth to showcase their sporting skills and talents. Mr Pryor was Melton mayor in 1970, and was instrumental in setting up a kindergarten in the area. He now lives in Albanvale with wife Lynne, and will celebrate his 80th birthday next year with his six children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

NEWS

Extra police will be on the roads in coming months as Brimbank Highway Patrol steps up efforts to take drink drivers off the roads and cut the death and injury toll. Operation Solo Strike and Operation Safe Solo will run concurrently until the end of May, with Brimbank and Melton police particularly focused on motorcycle behaviour, as well as drunk and drugged driving. Leading senior constable Trent Hewet said lowering the number of motorcycle fatalities was a big focus. “Last year, there were 17 fatalities on Brimbank roads, and six of those were motorcycle-related,” he said. “Out of these there were also a number of drivers at fault with issues with licences, so we will target that [as well]. “Incidents involving motorcycles can be particularly traumatic, there’s not much to keep the driver safe if an accident occurs.” There will be 52 extra shifts added to the highway patrols’ roster as part of the twin operations. Education and deterrence are equally important for officers in their aim. “We’re not targeting specific areas of Brimbank and Melton, it will be all over,” senior constable Hewet said. “If we can educate people before an incident happens that is ideal. “We will especially boost our numbers around major weekends like Easter.” Ewen McRae

All the cultaures that call the western suburbs home will be celebrated at a picnic at Brimbank Park next week. The free picnic on Wednesday, March 22, has been organised by the Brimbank council and the Victorian Co-operative on Children’s Services for Ethnic Groups (VICSEG). It is especially for children aged up to five, and their families, and is part of Cultural Diversity Week celebrations. Nguri Ngur runs a group for Burmese women and their children. She encouraged families of all cultural backgrounds to come along and enjoy the day. “It’s a heart-warming feeling to be accepted into a new country, so to have this kind of picnic and to see other cultures and other people with lots of colour, is great,” Ms Ngur said.

“We would like to bring all the children together from all the cultural backgrounds … parents, grandparents and families.” VICSEG is hoping more than 500 families will get together for the picnic, which will feature indigenous arts, crafts and cultural games, henna art, storytime, singing, dancing and football activities. Cultural Diversity Week activities aim to build connections between diverse cultural communities, to educate on indigenous culture, and increase the sense of belonging among community groups. The picnic is from 10.30am until 1pm at Brimbank Park. Details: www.brimbank.vic. gov.au/events/childrens-multicultural-picnic Ewen McRae

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir delights in a Thai arrival to Footscray … Footscray central … so much wonderful food, so many lovely people. Apart from the central themes of Vietnamese and Ethiopian tucker, I can think of at least half a dozen other food varieties without even trying … but, Thai? Aside from a brief appearance in Hopkins Street several years, Thai food has never been part of the Footscray landscape, the nearest restaurants being in West Footscray, Seddon and Kensington. With the arrival of Issan Thai Street Food, the ballgame changes, adding another strand to inner Footscray’s diversity. I think Noi and hubby Vince are being very smart indeed. After my solo visit for reconnaissance purposes, a happy group of seven CTS pals hits Issan and has a swell time. We find the service fine and the wait times appropriate for the food we order. The sharing platter, som tum tard ($18.90), is a doozy – a big mound of excellent spicy green papaya salad surrounded by pork crackling, chicken wings, wet-smooth noodles, bean sprouts and chargrilled diced beef. Even the hardboiled egg halves are superbly done, with the yolks gooey, not runny. Our order of satay tofu ($6.90), fuelled by the intense curiosity of three of our group, doesn’t impress greatly – I think we’ve been expecting tofu a little more crusty and crunchy. This is OK and the peanutty sauce is good. The pork skewers of moo ping ($10.90) are outstanding. The meat is perfectly cooked,

ISSAN THAI STREET FOOD Address: 10 Droop Street, Footscray Phone: 9689 9404 packed with chargrill flavour and served with a zingy tamarind-based sauce. Our serve of Penang curry with beef ($15.90) is of modest proportions, but all good. Its deeply rich flavoursome sauce/gravy is the hit, with some of us mopping it up with rice long after the curry’s main protagonists have gone and other dishes have arrived at our table. Pad thai with chicken ($13.90) is a fine version of this popular noodle dish. The chicken salad of larb gai ($13.90) really impresses with its freshness and tang. Likewise with the equally sexy moo narm tok ($13.90) – sliced grilled pork with lemon juice, herbs, chilli and toasted ground rice … fatty, chargrilled gloriousness! At Issan, you won’t find much exotica, offal or many regional specialties. But our general consensus is that Issan fare is a considerable cut above what is generally found in your typical suburban Thai restaurant. We double order several dishes – the moo ping, the larb gai and the moo narm tok – and eat substantially and satisfyingly well. The bill for seven is just under $20 each. This large, owner-built house on about 940 square metres is beautifully presented and has many ingredients modern families seek. There are two big, separate living areas, one with lovely floorboards, the other carpeted – they both have glass sliders out to a huge, gabled pergola, which covers a built-in barbecue and tropical greenery. The kitchen has a stack of timber cupboards, charcoal-coloured benchtops and all mod-cons. Of the four grey-carpeted bedrooms, the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Out back, there’s expansive concrete bordered by a large lawn area and flanked by mature trees. There’s a gazebo here, too. A garage/workshop with toilet and hot and cold water, plus mezzanine storage, are winners for tradies and hobbyists alike.

“What a lovely home” is a phrase you’ll need to get used to if you purchase this beautiful family property. The facade is contemporary yet has all the hallmarks of old-fashioned homeliness. Stop for tea on the fully-finished front porch. This tiled, single-storey residence has a separate theatre room and kid’s play room in addition to four bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobes. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with twin vanity and shower set behind a floating-wall-style design. A powder room is next to the main bathroom, with a gorgeous pebble tiling feature on the wall of the glass shower; and there’s a separate bath. The living zone is most inviting with its dimensions and sense of light. A low-maintenance decked rear yard, with large back patio, is understated and private, with English evergreens adding to a sense of timelessness and style.

Architectural points of difference – a pitched, timber ceiling with exposed beams, stained to match the attractive hardwood kitchen cabinetry – are features of this great family starter. Set on about 700 square metres, this four-bedroom residence has an open, welcoming feel, thanks to the extra attention to detail made by its original owners. All rooms have built-in wardrobes and get plenty of light from double-height windows, with wood-stained frames to match the stain found in all living areas. A sunken lounge room is a feature space. A large, decked rear patio with a bar, together with under-cover parking for at least four cars, make this a versatile proposition. More and more people are starting to discover Kurunjang, with established family properties on large lots, with all amenities nearby – not to mention easy access to the Western Freeway.

Here we find a new house ready to move into and make your own. Within walking distance of local reserves, with easy access to the Western Highway and close to schools, shops and transport, it’s the house you’ve been working for. It is tiled throughout in over-sized high-gloss enamel, and is well lit day and night. The kitchen, overlooking the lounge area, has stainless-steel appliances, a breakfast bench and tiled splashback. The main bedroom has a tiled en suite with contemporary vanity, shower and porcelain toilet; the other two bedrooms are carpeted and have built-in wardrobes. The main bathroom is fully tiled, has a 1000mm shower base with glass door, separate bath and contemporary vanity. A remote-controlled garage wth internal access is a little luxury to enjoy as you settle into this up-and-coming locale, perfect for young families and empty-nesters.

Price: $439,000

Eynesbury is a rare place – the leisurely drive in takes you through one of Victoria’s largest remaining grey box forests, creating a gateway to home through a very special place that gives you time to debrief from the city and soak up the peace. After this nature drive, the owners of 14 Metcalfe can then step through their front door into a contemporary house filled with light, high on quality and low in upkeep. They’ll be in a town that’s developing its own character as it matures, has a

top-notch golf course, a community hub and café, and a popular monthly farmers market. The interior decor blends pearl-grey and crisp white, with a lovely deep chocolate-grey on highlight walls. Carpet is grey and windows have a mix of white sheers and classy charcoal tab curtains. Glossy floor tiles are subtly patterned, also in pearl-grey and white, and all benches are made of Caesarstone. A customary layout has the main

bedroom to the right of entry hall, and a carpeted open lounge room next door. The bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and an open en suite with a raised basin atop a mid-grey vanity. Remaining fitted bedrooms are down a second tiled hallway, as are the gleaming main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry with two-door closet. The block of about 580 square metres has every spare inch landscaped, with an eye on manageability and aesthetics. One

side yard is wide – a gate could be added for caravan entry; the other side has the clothes line under a long timber deck, which originates in the covered alfresco area at the back. This expansive decking also supports a six-person spa. Other assets include ducted heating, evaporative cooling and a remote-controlled double garage with internal access to the entry hall. SPORT Eagles all style as shield final beckons

Luke Castle looks to evade a bouncer. (Dennis Manktelow)

Eynesbury Eagles have stormed into the Western Suburbs Churches & Community Cricket Association’s A.E Lowe Shield grand final. The best side in the competition all season, the Eagles again starred with the bat, posting yet another 300-plus score in their semi-final encounter with Rockbank. Eagles captain Luke Castle said the match could have unfolded differently if the Rams had taken their chances early on. “There was a bit of pressure on us, having finished on top of the ladder,” he said. “At the start of the day they dropped myself and Tristan Francis. It could have been 2-6, but instead we ended up being 0-190 and it went on from there. “Tristan made a massive 124, while I made 61 and my brother [Hayden] made 62.” The Eagles finished 343, bowled out with 8.1 overs remaining. Daniel Piccolo took five wickets for the Rams.

With a big total on the board, all the pressure was on the Rams, who needed a good start. Instead, it was the Eagles who got off to a flyer. “My brother was bowling the first over and on the fourth ball he clean bowled Jackson Spencer, who is their best batsman,” Castle said. “Their captain, Neil Burton, hung around and played a handy knock of 49, but didn’t have much support.” The Rams were bowled out for 137, handing the Eagles a 206-run win and securing their grand final spot. Hayden Castle claimed 5-25, while Ray Davis took three wickets. Despite having made the grand final, the Eagles aren’t happy yet. They still have bigger fish to fry. The last time the Eagles faced their grand final opponent, West Melbourne, the Eagles had an easy win on the back of centuries from the Castle brothers.

“The boys said after the match that the job isn’t done until we win the premiership,” Luke Castle said. “Last time we smashed them, but finals is a different ball game.” The Eagles will have a couple of tough selection decisions during the week, with Graham Brooks and Reece Andrews available for selection. “Graham made 500 runs last season playing for Manor Lakes and batting at six or seven takes the pressure off,” Castle said. “He’s a quality all-rounder. “Reece has been in Hawaii, but will be back next week. It’s hard to make changes to a winning semi-final team, but I think we’re a more even side with both of them in the team.” In a Tasman Smith Shield C grade semi-final, the Rams defeated Eynesbury. Olympic dreams on track By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh teen Graeme Frislie has cemented his spot as one of Australia’s most talented junior cyclists. The 16-year-old has represented his state at national level, both on the road and track, since 2014, and recently won five medals at the National Junior Track Championships in Sydney. Competing in the under-17 age group, Frislie won the 500-metre time trial, the sprint race and the team pursuit with Josh Heather, Harry Morgan and Bill Simpson. He also won silver as part of the team sprint and won bronze in the keirin event. In qualifying for the sprint race final, Frislie set the Australian under-17 record for a flying 200 metres. He qualified for last month’s championships at the state titles in January, and while he wasn’t surprised to have made the national championships, he said he was unsure how he would go this year. “I was excited to be selected,” he said. “I had a lot of time off this season, as I broke my collar bone late last year at the national road championships. I didn’t expect to have the success that I did.” It’s not the first time Frislie’s come away from national titles with a bag full of medals. The Brunswick Cycling Club member won five events in 2015 to claim the prestigious champion of champions trophy. His love of cycling started about six years ago. “When I was young, I rode with my family causally,” he said. “I saw cycling on TV and I thought it would be cool to ride. “Now I ride at Darebin, and I’ve been there for four years consistently. I also go out with a local bunch of riders twice a week.” With the track season finished, the Bacchus Marsh Grammar year 10 student is now looking ahead to the road season. It’s his lesser favourite of the two categories – he says he finds road cycling more boring and not as exciting as the track. Frislie’s next aim is to try to qualify for the Australian junior world championships next year, when he’s old enough. Long term, he’s just going to see where cycling takes him. “That’s the main aim [under-19 world]; it would be really good,” he said. “I would love to have the chance to go to the Olympics. “I’ll see what path cycling takes me on. I don’t want to set a goal, as everything could be turned on its head at any time.” 48 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 14, 2017

Melton’s hopes of back-to-back premierships are over after the Lions were knocked out in the first round of Women’s Premier Cricket seconds one-day competition finals. The Lions, which finished the season in fourth spot, were always in for a challenge against first-placed Carlton Brunswick. Carlton-Brunswick hit 6-251 off its 45 overs, with the opening partnership of Alex Rogers (83) and skipper Ashley Angus (51) doing the damage early. Briony Polkinghorne and Laura Shaw were the pick of the bowlers for the Lions with two wickets each. The Lions lost the wicket of Jessica Surace early, but then looked in control with Shaw and skipper Stephanie Theodore at the crease. The two put on nearly a 100-run partnership, but once both fell the Lions struggled to refocus. Janelle Hayhurst, on 24, was the only other batter who made any inroads. The Lions finished 9-227, which was 25 runs short of a win. Shaw top-scored with 74 and Theodore made 60. Next season the club will field a side in the Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association. The team is for players aged 15 and above and will start in October. A come and try day will be held on March 26 between 9.30 and 11am. Details: 0408 356 850 or kevinvernon007@me.com Tara Murray

Bears keen to put easybeat tag behind them Burnside Heights players have a spring in their step as the start of the Essendon District Football League division 2 season gets closer. Having won just one game in the past two seasons, the Bears have been the competition bottom dwellers, but they are hoping that’s in the past after the club’s busiest off season so far. Bears coach Aidan Stott said he was hopeful of having a more competitive side this season. “We know we’re coming from a long way back,” he said “How competitive we will be I don’t yet know, but we’ll surprise a few teams. “It’ll be our fourth year in the competition and it’s the first time we’ve tried to recruit and bring guys in. Hopefully, we’re not the

whipping boys anymore.” Stott, entering his first full season as coach, was appointed to the role in June with one eye firmly focused on getting things right. He said the look of the Bears’ line-up this season would be very different. “We should have about 12 new faces in the senior side come round one,” he said. “We’ve

added two young ruckman, four quality midfielders and three forwards. We’re hoping to finalise the signings of two key defenders in the next week. We’ve added plenty of players and added some much-needed depth.” He said there were about 12 new faces in the reserves side as well, with the club getting about 60 players on the training track. “We’re excited by the possibilities for this year,” he said. “We’re all excited by the challenge of continued commitment and improvement.” Stott said that beyond the senior playing group, things were positive at the club as a whole. The Essendon District Football League has raised the age limit of its under-19 competition for this season. The league announced last week that the age limit this year would be under-19.5 to help sides struggling for numbers. The EDFL also changed its junior ages group from even-aged number to odd numbers, which means that players who would normally push up into the under-19s are still eligible to play in the younger age group. The competition is expected to return to under-19s next season.

By Tara Murray Sydenham/Hillside’s off season decision to make the move to turf cricket has been vindicated, with the club’s senior side through to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s north A1 grand final. Just days after losing a North West Metropolitan Cricket Association semi-final last season, Storm captain Kane Twentyman set about looking at what they needed to do to make the transition to the VTCA. “We started recruiting and seeing who we could secure, who we were going to chat with the day after losing the semi-final,” he said. “It’s paid dividends … the guys knew what we needed to do to have some success. We recruited the right people. “Some of the guys were playing in their seventh semi-final on the weekend without playing in a grand final. It’ll be the first grand final for those guys.” Adding to the excitement for the Storm, the club’s three top sides have all made grand finals. Twentyman said there was a lot of excitement at the club on Sunday night after all the results had been confirmed. Having finished fourth, the Storm’s top side took on minor premier Moonee Valley in a knockout semi-final at the weekend for a spot in the grand final. Batting first, the Storm got off to a good start before losing three quick wickets to be 3-78. Twentyman and Ameya Naik got the side back on track with an 85-run partnership before both lost their wickets in quick succession. Wicketkeeper Dylan Knight kept the scoreboard ticking over and helped push the score past 200. All of the lower order contributed, with the Storm being bowled out on the second last ball for 265. Knight top-scored with 51. Moonee Valley’s inning started in a similar way to that of the Storm – a good opening partnership before the loss of a couple of quick wickets. Despite the loss of regular wickets, Moonee Valley looked on track for victory at 5-209 with plenty of overs remaining. “I kept looking at the scoreboard throughout the innings to see where they were compared to us,” Twentyman said. “They had a young fellow come in at four [Anthony Cafari] and he showed a few of the senior guys how to go about it. “Once we got him out, we were confident of getting the win.” The loss of 3-4, including Cafari, turned the match in the Storm’s favour. Despite a couple of determined late-order batsmen, the Storm got the job done by bowling out Moonee Valley for 247. Declan Highgate took three wickets including that of Cafari, while Steven Sandhu, Twentyman and Naik took two wickets each. In the grand final, the Storm will face Sunshine YCW, which defeated Sunshine in the other semi-final. Last time the teams met, Storm took the points, but Twentyman is expecting a lot closer affair over the next two weekends.

volunteers had added “a breath of fresh air”. The good numbers on the track had flowed through to the junior teams, with the club having about 400 kids involved in junior sides and Auskick. “Hopefully, they are the future of the club and push through into the senior teams,” Stott said. “There’s definitely a couple of under-18s who are pushing through, while there’s a couple of under-19s who are exciting us.” The Bears’ senior side will start its season on April 1 against East Sunbury in a twilight match.

Football

An AFL Goldfields thirds football competition will go ahead this season. The region’s governing body sought feedback from clubs about a third open-age men’s football side and five clubs expressed interest. Bacchus Marsh, Diggers Rest, Melton South, Sunbury Lions and Sunbury Kangaroos will field sides in the new competition.

VTCA

Melton Centrals’ finals campaign came to a disappointing end in the opening round of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s west A1 competition. Sent in by Williamstown Imperials, Centrals were bowled out for 149. Wicketkeeper Bradley Coulson top-scored at the top of the order on 38. Imperials hit the winning runs with three wickets in hand. Centrals skipper Adam Hulett took four wickets.

Bowls

Gisborne Bowls Club has won the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s division 1 title. Gisborne, which entered the grand final undefeated, accounted for Lancefield 95-87. The win is Gisborne’s first division 1 title.

Football

Melton Centrals are looking for women’s footballers. Centrals, which finished runners-up in the Victorian Women’s Football League division north-west competition last season, are set to play in an AFL Goldfields competition this year. Centrals are looking for players of any skill level.

Cricket

Lancefield and Wallan will face off in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade grand final. Wallan easily accounted for Macedon, with more than a day’s play remaining. It was a lot closer between Lancefield and Sunbury United as the Tigers won with three wickets in hand. The final will be at Greenhill Reserve in Wallan. Dragons nail final spot By Tara Murray

Centrals aim for a more enjoyable year

Gisborne timed its run chase to perfection against Bacchus Marsh to earn a second straight Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand final appearance. Like the last time the two teams met, the match went down to the wire. This time the result went the Dragons’ way with Clinton Young hitting the runs off the first ball of the last over of the day. The weekend started with the Bulls winning the toss and electing to bat at home. They didn’t get off to the best start, with Peter Lalor out for three and Alex Porter with a second-ball duck. Jay King was doing the damage with the ball early on taking the first four wickets. When Clinton Young got his first wicket, opener Mili Sepala was gone for 35 and the Bulls were 5-74. The middle and lower order mustered some resistance, with Kieran Atkin (35), Shaun Taylor (50) and James Bailey (33no) adding some handy runs to push the score past 200. The Bulls were bowled out for 215 with three and a half overs left. King, who also wrapped up the tail, finished with 6-64 off 22.3, including seven maidens. The Dragons’ openers got off to a steady but slow start, putting on 64 for the first partnership. Dragons playing-coach Simon Harman was out for 36 and Brook Grumont lasted just two balls before being caught and bowled by Dennis O’Loughlin. Beau Valka and Riley Vernon added 42 runs for the fourth partnership, before Valka was dismissed, soon followed by Jakson Knight (0) and Vernon (66). The Dragons at that point were 5-114. After Jason Wilson and skipper Jarryd Vernon steadied the ship, the Dragons needed 39 runs off the last 10 overs with five wickets in hand. The total was in sight when Wilson was bowled by Madushanka Ekanayaka for 40, giving the Bulls same hope. Jarryd Vernon fell for 40 with the scores level, leaving the job of hitting the winning runs to Young and Darcy Nolan. Young obliged by hitting a two of the first ball of the final over. The Dragons finished 8-217. Their win sets up a grand final clash with Sunbury, which shocked premiership favourite Riddell. The Dragons will be chasing a second straight McIntyre Cup premiership since returning to the top grade at the start of last season.

Melton Centrals are upping the fun factor as they prepare for the Riddell District Football League season. With just two wins last year, both against Rockbank, which didn’t win a game, it was a tough year for Centrals on field. But with a new coach on board and a club legend returning to the coaching panel, Centrals’ off season has been positive. Coach Mathew Sproule said the club was attacking pre-season with a lot of intensity. “Training has been pretty good and we’ve got former coach Brian Wheelahan back as an assistant coach,” he said. “We’ve looked to get a bit of fun back into training and make it a positive environment.” Sproule said a focus was being put on fitness in a bid to help the players run out games better and the club was looking to bring in some experience to help provide support for the young playing group. “We’ve added some players, but we’re still to finalise our squad,” he said. “There’ll be about eight different players from round one last year. “We haven’t lost many players and we’ve picked up six to eight players who have played in similar or better competitions.” Centrals have lodged clearances for Peter Akech, Blake Henderson, Linton Hogan, Trent Kreeck, Adam Leggett, Adam McIntyre, Simon Pocervina, Joel Rattya, Mark Russeell, John Simson, Joshua Spry and Ben Stonehouse. Sproule said the aim was to be more competitive than had been the case in the past couple of years. He said there had been some positive signs in the first practice match, with two more planned. “We are a chance to win a few more games with a few more experienced guys in the side,” Sproule said. “We still had eight to nine guys who were under-19 in the practice match and it’s a good experience for them. “We will still try to promote the kids. There’s still room for improvement – we have to keep improving until we are at a level we are content with. “It’s a work in progress, not just a one-year journey.“ Centrals will start their season off with a bang by facing local rival Rockbank under lights on Saturday, April 8.

Bacchus Marsh opener Mili Sepala made 35.

Seeking Club Coach

Gisborne Cricket Club is the largest in the GDCA with 7 senior men’s teams, 1 senior women’s team, 14 junior teams and over 120 Milo participants. 2015/16 1st & 2nd XI Premiers, the club has enormous potential and seeks an experienced person to act as Club Coach, directing a panel of coaches spread across our teams. We are seeking a non-playing coach as the demands of the job make this necessary. Excellent remuneration is available as we require an outstanding cricket person to come on board.

Darley in good nick for flag push Darley has completed the first part of the plan for this season – now it’s about taking the next step. The Lions have made the Ballarat Cricket Association finals and captain-coach Heath Pritchard doesn’t want to waste the opportunity. “We have to make something of it,” he said. “I don’t want to come next Sunday night and we’ve been beaten. “We’ve got an interesting demographic and it could be the last chance for some of the guys.” The Lions, who finished second, will face Mt Clear in a knockout semi-final at Alfredton Turf, a ground the Lions haven’t played on this year. Wendouree will play NapoleonsSebastopol in the other knockout semi-final. “There’s no home ground advantage and that’s the rules,” Pritchard said. “Mt Clear played there this week and we haven’t seen the ground, but it’s the same as any

ground – it has a pitch and stumps. We’ll be ready to play. “The team who handles the pressure the best will get the win. Often, pressure is in your own mind and builds up. “If we play our best cricket, we’re definitely a chance. Mt Clear beat us during the season, but apart from one hour I thought we outplayed them. “If we can avoid that lapse this time, I think we’re a good chance.” The Lions enter the finals on the back of a big win against East Ballarat. Having already secured a finals spot, the focus for the Lions was how they played the game. Pritchard was more than thrilled with the 8-336 the team made on day one. Pritchard top-scored with 97. The bowlers backed it up bowling East Ballarat out for 185.

“They came out hard as they had nothing to gain from the match – they couldn’t go anywhere,” Pritchard said. “We had to bowl less than 50 overs and I managed to give everyone a bowl who I wanted one. “I thought about sending them back in and looking for an outright victory, but you’re not going to get them out in 30 overs.” Matt Cape, Hasitha Wickramasinghe and Sajith Rupasingha were among the wickets for the Lions. Meanwhile, Bryce Galea scored his maiden century playing for the Lions’ fourth XI in BCA one-day C grade against Lucas. Galea, who has also been playing in a 16 and under competition this season, made an unbeaten 100, including seven fours, in the Lions’ win. Tara Murray

ROD’S VERDICT

t would be easy to be intimidated by a car like this, yet driving it turns out to be easy, even just popping down to the shops. The power is phenomenal and delivered with such disarming smoothness it’s easy to go into deep illegality without realising. Overtaking is ridiculously simple, you’re out and back in a flash even on half pedal. Don’t give this car full pedal until you’re completely prepared for what happens. The acceleration presses you back in your seat so hard you’ll hang onto the wheel more as an anchor than a control. Suburban housewife gets to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, experiences jubilation. The GTR is beautifully finished and appointed, even the base (non-leather) edition, but forget the back seat, even for children. The gap between it and the front seat is something you’d post a letter through. The boot is good for a weekend away with a couple of soft bags and maybe a case of wine. I’m surprised I liked this car so much. Just note that you will need to keep your cute little hatchback for any task other than sheer indulgence.

(iStock)

ruly exciting. Give the GTR some gas mid-corner and the rear simply digs in for prodigious grip. The more pedal you give it, the harder it digs in and the faster it goes around. There has to be a limit to this and I’m truly relieved I didn’t reach it. Yet the ride quality, while certainly firm, isn’t sharp. Excellent seating helps to make the GTR surprisingly comfortable over long distances. There’s a cacophony of mechanical noises – tyres, transmission, driveline and glorious engine burble as the big V6 rockets to 7500rpm. For an enthusiast this is a symphony, pure and simple. The price is filling up with only the most expensive 98 RON fuel, and the GTR takes heaps of it. It is a true supercar and it need make no excuses to anything that costs under half a mil. As such, it’s bargain basement, but it still has a hard row to hoe. Lots of GTRs, only some of them genuine, have been privately imported and they’re a lead weight on resale value. And the price falls comfortably in Maserati territory.
