Melton gripped by crime Violent crimes, including home invasions and robberies, have soared over the past year in Melton, with the state’s police minister conceding there is a long way to go before people felt “safe”. Aggravated burglaries jumped 40 per cent in the Melton area – 110 properties were broken into while people were at home – while robberies more than doubled to 78 in the 12 months to December last year. Figures released by the Crime Statistics Agency painted a bleak picture of a city gripped by crime, the rate of which increased by almost eight per cent, with more than 12,000 offences recorded. Other offences driving up crime include assault (15 per cent up), sexual offences (15 per cent up) weapons (16 per cent up) and thefts (eight per cent up). Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp said carjackings and home invasions were some of the biggest causes of concern for Victoria Police. “Our members are very, very focused on actually turning around that particular type of offending,” he said. “We are locking up these people very, very quickly, and we know that we are seeing significantly more people committing these offences being remanded in custody.” Aggravated burglaries jumped by 38 per cent in Caroline Springs and more than doubled in postcode 3338, which
includes Brookfield, Exford, Eynesbury and Melton South. Meanwhile, in Moorabool, crime increased by more than 16 per cent in the same period, with 2500 offences recorded. Arson jumped by more than 40 per cent, property damage offences by more than 35 per cent and theft by 18 per cent. Police Minister Lisa Neville said crime had flatlined in the December quarter, increasing only 0.1 per cent.
‘‘
We want to bring it down – the war … is not over - Lisa Neville
’’
“There are some positive signs, but at the end of the day, we’ve still got a long way to go for people to feel safe, and that they’re not at risk of some of the crimes that we see on the TV every night,” Ms Neville said. “I’m not trying to sugarcoat this; we want to bring the [crime rate] down. “The war on this is not over.” The opposition accused the state government of “abandoning” community safety, with police spokesman Edward O’Donohue claiming crime increased by 20 per cent since the Andrews government came into power. “Daniel Andrews weakened bail laws, weakened sentencing, removed move-on powers from police, closed police stations and cut frontline police numbers,” Mr O’Donohue said.

Guard dog cops the rap for oil spill into river A guard dog at a Bacchus Marsh mechanic’s workshop was to blame for a mammoth oil spill into the Werribee River that took several days to clean up, the Environment Protection Authority has been told. Traianon Transport was being investigated over the spill, which contaminated sections of the river at Peelmans Lane, Maddingley, earlier this year. The Environment Protection Authority was told the only “plausible” explanation for the oil leak was that the company guard dog bumped open the waste oil tank valve, causing the spill.
The tank leaked about 1200 litres of oil, but EPA South West regional manager Carolyn Francis said it was unclear how much had entered the river. “The oil travelled into a stormwater drain at the rear of the premises, which resulted in it flowing to a discharge point on Werribee River,” Ms Francis said. “Traianon Transport was already cleaning up the spill on their site by the time EPA officers arrived and was co-operative throughout our investigation, but this leak was preventable.” At the time, Melbourne Water put out
booms to contain the oil and Moorabool council contractors removed the oil from the stormwater network and the river’s surface. But there were serious concerns for native flora and fauna, with residents reporting a duck covered in black oil and fish surfacing where the oil had spilled. Ms Francis said, thanks to prompt community reporting, authorities were able to respond quickly and minimise long-term environmental harm. Moorabool Environment Group president Ben Courtice said while he was pleased damage
had been minimised, three months on, oil residue is still stuck to reeds on the riverbed. “Even if the dog, or a forklift, or a tractor knocked a tank of oil open, there should be measures in place so it’s not going into the river,” Mr Courtice said. “Hopefully, other companies will notice and take more care.” The EPA issued Traianon Transport a notice requiring it to install controls to prevent future oil leaks, and fined the company $7700. Traianon Transport declined to comment. Sumeyya Ilanbey
Police: Drivers flout road rules ‘relentlessly’
Sad day rocks Brookfield By Sumeyya Ilanbey Jalal Yassine-Naja was a beautiful 13-year-old “angel” who meant the “absolute world” to his family before his life was cut tragically short last Tuesday. The teenager kissed his mum, Olivia, goodbye, popped on a helmet and hopped on his skateboard on his way to school. Less than 100 metres from home, he was struck by a four-wheel-drive. Emergency services performed CPR on Jalal for 50 minutes, but he’d suffered massive head injuries and could not be revived. Friends and family last week paid tribute to the “young life” that was taken too soon. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money
to help the Brookfield family with costs. “Jalal was an amazing brother, son and friend to those who needed him,” the page reads. “The eldest of four gorgeous boys, Jalal was their absolute world. “We are all so saddened and heart-broken at Jalal’s passing. May he rest in eternal peace. Another angel taken too soon.” The driver of the four-wheel-drive, reportedly a woman who was driving some of her own children to school, was assisting police. The 34-year-old Brookfield woman was spoken to last week and released pending further inquiries. Investigations are ongoing. Witnesses told reporters the boy’s stepfather arrived at the scene moments after the accident. Soon after, the boy’s mother arrived.
“As she stood out my front door, I just heard her say, ‘and a wonderful life is over’,” neighbour Patricia Trencher told media. “This whole street is a very sad street today,” she said. Police said the boy had been skateboarding on a quiet road and was wearing a helmet. “He did everything right,” an emotional Acting Sergeant Dale Murley said. “He had a helmet on, he was going to school … a tragic accident. “I’ll go home tonight and the first thing I’ll do is I’ll give my boys a cuddle.” Donations to Jalal’s GoFundMe appeal can be made at gofundme.com/in-memory-ofjalal-yassinenaja. – with The Age

More than 250 traffic violations were detected in Melton and Moorabool during the Labour Day long weekend. Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing, Doug Fryer, said drivers had relentlessly flouted the law, despite a high police presence on the roads. In Melton, five drink drivers, six drug drivers, 12 disqualified or suspended drivers, and five unlicensed drivers were detected. There were 90 speeding offences detected, 16 unregistered vehicles, six seatbelt offences, four drivers pulled over for disobeying signs, and six for using mobile phones. Two cars were impounded. In Moorabool, four drink drivers, three drug drivers and two unlicensed drivers were caught as part of the police blitz. Police also detected 35 speeding offences and 15 unregistered vehicles, and impounded four cars. Assistant Commissioner Fryer said too many drivers tested positive for drugs and alcohol. “It’s disappointing behaviour,” he said. “Don’t take these risks on our roads … it’s not worth your life or someone else’s.” Operation Arid, which ran from Friday, March 10, to Monday, March 13, focused on alcohol and drug testing, fatigue, speed, distraction and seatbelts. Statewide, police conducted 134,000 breath tests, detecting 312 drink drivers. About 2700 drug tests were also conducted, with one in 16 (168) drivers testing positive for drugs. One cyclist died on the roads during the long weekend.

Hoons have residents on edge By Sumeyya Ilanbey Hoons are street racing alongside MacPherson Park in Melton – and locals are frustrated and fearful. One Kurunjang resident, who wants to remain anonymous, said hoons gathered at the park on Coburns Road at least once a week to race. The resident said that from outside his home he could hear the cars, with loud engines and exhausts, taking off at high speed. “At that entry to MacPherson Park, you wouldn’t be able to find a square inch of bitumen that doesn’t have burn-out marks,”
he said. “It’s blatantly obvious to anyone who drives along that road – and it’s a major road – that people are racing. “There’s no question that police would be aware of what’s going on.” The resident is urging Melton council and police to amp up their patrols of the area and stamp out the hooning. He says he’s worried about the safety of innocent bystanders or drivers who inadvertently cross paths with the hoons. “What’s going on isn’t posing any danger to me directly,” he said. “But these kind of people are driving in unsafe manners at all times all over Melton.”
Melton council recreation and youth manager Troy Scoble said officers had been working with Victoria Police to increase patrols in the area and had installed bollard boom gates to restrict access to the park after 10pm. But he said the best way to deter anti-social behaviour is for the park to be used. “Council is focused on activating the park with sport, passive recreation opportunities and a number of other social and community programs,” Mr Scoble said. “This activation will increase the public surveillance of the park and its facilities, further reducing opportunities for poor behaviour to take place.”
Melton council recently applied for federal government funding for a major redevelopment of the park, include infrastructure upgrades. Melton Highway Patrol Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier said police were committed to stamping out hooning, but needed public help to identify the offenders. “If people are able to record any of the events via their phone or closed-circuit TV cameras that would help,” Sergeant Stuhldreier said. “We’re also appealing to the public to help identify when these events are going to happen.” Anyone with information is asked to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000 or Melton police on 9747 7999.
Tennis talent steps up the top women’s players under 12 in Australia, winning state titles and touring with the Bruce Cup team to Canberra to play the best juniors from other states. “That (Bruce Cup) was a lot of fun,” Ms Micic said. “Being in a team environment is different for tennis, but we were all so encouraging, and everyone would support you in your matches which was nice.” After years of looking up to players like Djokovic and Karolína Plíšková, Ms Micic said she hoped to emulate them by joining the professional circuit one day. “I really like the way they play, and they’ve got a good attitude out on the court,” she said. “Hopefully one day I can get to that level, that would be good. I’m training six days a week so hopefully that helps me get there.”

Nine years after watching Novak Djokovic claim his first Australian Open crown, Southern Cross Grammar student Elena Micic is hoping to follow in his footsteps. Ms Micic, 12, was last week recognised for her burgeoning tennis talent with a Victorian School Sports Award (Sporting Blue), receiving her award from Olympians Belinda Hocking and Andrew Smith at a gala MCG function. “That was pretty cool,” Ms Micic said. “Meeting the Olympic guys and getting photos with them was good fun.” Ms Micic first started dreaming of a career in tennis at just three, after watching Djokovic win the 2008 Australian Open. By five she was training multiple times during the week, and played in her first tournaments at just seven years old. She started accruing ranking points when she was eight and last year was ranked as one of

Twins are stars of state Melton twins Jaime-Lee and Patrick Getson are set for stellar swimming careers. The 16-year-olds have represented Victoria at several national swimming competitions, hold number one titles and have represented Australia at international competitions. Their dedication and commitment to swimming was recognised at a Victorian school sports awards ceremony last week. The siblings, who attend Melton Specialist School, are among 51 junior athletes to be awarded a sporting blue medal – the highest sporting accolade presented by the public school system.
Their mum, Leanne Getson-Ballan, said her children worked tirelessly, with Jaime-Lee recently making it into the world top 10 in the 100-metre backstroke. “Both Patrick and Jaime-Lee have been honoured to represent their state for the past two years,” Ms Getson-Ballan said. “They have been nominated again for this year’s state team for the Pacific School Games later in the year.” Education Minister James Merlino congratulated the “talented young athletes”. Playing field not level By Sumeyya Ilanbey Works on the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Recreation Reserve couldn’t start soon enough for one local club, with players forced to train on “unsafe” ground. Despite its growing membership base, soccer lags behind other sports in the support it gets, Bacchus Marsh Scorpions soccer club president Noel Stanley contends. He says players train on grounds where concrete slabs have been inserted to anchor cricket stumps, and several players have tripped and suffered injuries. And while the state government last week said it would pitch in for new lighting at the Masons Lane reserve, where Scorpions members train, it’s not enough to bring the oval up to scratch, he says. “These lights will help in the short term, but we need a soccer pitch in Moorabool shire,” he said. “We’re one of the largest sporting clubs in Bacchus Marsh – we’re growing exponentially – it’s critical the council and government do something to accommodate soccer.” Late last year, Moorabool council approved a master plan for an active sports precinct as part of the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Recreation Reserve. Stage one of the plan includes two soccer pitches, a multi-purpose sports pavilion and pavilions for equestrian use. Construction of the ovals and buildings is due to start in February next year and be finished by the end of 2018. Mr Stanley said investing in sports clubs was vital to steer young people away from crime. “Being engaged in things like soccer cuts down on vandalism, and community harm and damage,” Mr Stanley said. “A strong sporting culture is a deterrent from crime – it brings kids off the streets, away from

their PlayStations, and gives them healthier options.” Moorabool mayor David Edwards said the master plan for the racecourse and recreation reserve included designated soccer pitches – the first for the shire. “The recommendations of the strategy
will inform future investment in sport and recreation infrastructure in Moorabool, including Bacchus Marsh,” Cr Edwards said. He added that the council’s single most significant investment was the redevelopment of Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve.

Australia Day move ‘historic’ Melton council’s Australia Day celebrations will be held at Taylors Hill next year. After a fiery debate at this month’s council meeting, councillors voted to put on the 2018 event at Morton Homestead on Calder Park Drive, Taylors Hill, in lieu of Willows Historical Park. Watts ward councillor Lara Carli said Morton Homestead was “under-utilised”, and said it was important for the council to showcase different sites. While councillors Melissa De Santis, Goran Kesic, Kathy Majdlik and Steve Abboushi voted to support the move to Taylors Hill, councillors Sophie Ramsey, Ken Hardy, Bob Turner and Michelle Mendes were against it. Cr Turner said for eastern corridor residents to travel “15 to 20 minutes” to Willows Historical Park wasn’t the “end of the world”. “It’s been done [at the Willows] year after year,” Cr Turner said. “You start moving events all over the place, it starts getting difficult.” While there were concerns about the price of holding Australia Day at Taylors Hill, with councillors Mendes and Ramsey requesting a cost report, corporate services general manager Peter Bean said there should not be extra costs. “Council currently has to ship everything into the Willows … so I wouldn’t envisage at this stage we’d have to incur additional costs,” Mr Bean said. The newly redeveloped McKenzie Street aged-services facility was officially unveiled last week. As part of the project, a stand-alone building has been constructed on the corner of Smith and McKenzie streets, adjacent to the existing Melton facility. The new building provides extra space for program areas and offices. Cr Kathy Majdlik Cambridge Ward
It’s an exciting time in the City of Melton, with much-needed community facilities being built and refurbished, and quality projects being launched.
Firstly, I’d like to express how proud I am to have been elected as your Cambridge Ward Councillor for the third time.
Â… † ‡ ˆ ˆ † ‰ Š ‹ ÂŒ „ ‰ † „ ˆÂ? ÂŽ ‘ „ The redevelopment of the McKenzie Street Aged Services facility is an important project for our City, helping Council meet the growing demand for services and programs for older adults, people with disabilities and their carers. As part of the redevelopment, a new building was constructed on the corner of Smith and McKenzie Streets, linked to the existing 5 McKenzie Street facility by an undercover walkway. This redevelopment is the realisation of a dream that ensures Council can continue to provide high quality services for our community at all stages of their lives. I also had the pleasure of opening Fraser Street Reserve, which recently –—˜™š›™—œž Â&#x;¥¢Â—¥£¤¼Â—œž ÂšÂ™Â˜Â™ÂŚÂ™§¨ŠªÂ™Â—œž ÂœÂŤÂĽÂœÂž ¥—¤§Â–˜™Â&#x;ž —™›ž Š¥¤Â—¥¤Âž ÂĽÂ—Â˜Âž ¼š™¤Â–™ž facilities, sheltered area, playground equipment; additional seating; and exercise equipment, which build on the existing natural features of the reserve. The redevelopment is an exciting project for the local community; a space where little ones can play, and adults can celebrate special occasions with family, friends and neighbours. Council is proud of this redevelopment; a place everyone can enjoy. Council also recently launched a beautifully unique project celebrating diversity within the City of Melton. I Belong, is a video and photographic initiative featuring 16 community members who each explain what belonging means to them. Our community is an inclusive one, where different cultural groups thrive by sharing and respecting each other’s differences. I Belong gives our residents a sense of belonging, and I’m proud to have been a part of this wonderful, all-embracing initiative. Please don’t hesitate to contact me on 0412 584 067 or sophie.ramsey@melton.vic.gov.au
‡’ ˆ ’ ˆˆ † ˆ ‡ “ ” „ ” † ˆ „ This speaks volumes about how much the residents of Cambridge Ward value the contributions I have made to our community over the past eight years, and I’d like to thank everyone who supported me throughout my campaign. I look forward to continuing my work with the community and will strive to make the City of Melton an even better place to live and raise a family. At the 6 March Ordinary Council Meeting, a report providing an update on the Westwood Drive Road and Bridge Works project was tabled. Council is still awaiting approvals from VicRoads and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) before we can proceed with construction of this important piece of transport infrastructure. In the interim, we have awarded the design contract to AECOM Pty Ltd to ensure that when approvals come through, we can go out to tender as soon as possible. Keep up to date on the progress of this project by visiting Council’s website: melton.vic.gov.au or following our Facebook page: facebook.com/cityofmelton Finally, Council will be holding its annual business awards program again this year. Local businesses provide valuable jobs and actively support community groups, so I encourage everyone to buy locally, and help the City of Melton’s economy become strong and resilient. I always welcome comments or feedback from residents who wish to contact me regarding any Council related matters. I can be contacted via email at kathy.majdlik@melton.vic.gov.au or on 0412 584 058.

‘Shortcut’ pain for Ballarat line By Sumeyya Ilanbey
A V/Line spokesman wouldn’t divulge details of the trespass incidents, but said trespass typically involved people using train tracks as shortcuts or walking near the tracks. “The rail reserve is a dangerous place to be for trespassers and anyone not authorised to be near the train tracks,” the spokesman said. “Trespassing is strictly prohibited for good reason – it poses significant risk to those involved and to V/Line staff.” An additional 14 services were delayed because of the hot weather, with a further 10 trains either finishing their journeys early or being cancelled last month.
Twelve trains on the Ballarat railway line were delayed last month because of trespassers, including one who caused delays to five services. While 97.8 per cent of services on the line were delivered, V/Line failed to meet its punctuality targets because of hot weather and people illegally crossing tracks, February performance figures show. Less than 85 per cent of services arrived on time. The regional rail operator’s target is 92 per cent.
The spokesman said rail operators throughout the world reduced the speed of trains during hot weather to minimise the risk of derailment caused when steel expanded in heat. Patronage on the line has increased by almost 20 per cent since the Regional Rail Link was introduced in June, 2015, according to V/Line’s performance figures. Chief executive James Pinder said 10 new weekly services had been added to the Ballarat railway line timetable on January 29 to coincide with the opening of the Caroline Springs train station.
Two three-carriage VLocity trains have also been added to the line, in addition to the nine that were introduced in June, 2015. “We’re working towards improving punctuality for passengers on the Ballarat line,” Mr Pinder said. Public Transport Users Association Ballarat line spokesman Ben Lever said there were higher than usual complaints about Ballarat services last month, with many passengers unhappy about unreliability and overcrowding. “This isn’t a suburban train,” Mr Lever said. “You don’t want to be standing up and being crammed like sardines.”
Village fete is jolly fine important we’re able to put things on at the [retirement village].” The fete will run from 9am-3pm on Sunday, March 26, at the Burnside Retirement Village, 16 Nicol Avenue. Details: 0419 525 917
Whether you’re coming for the famous English scones, to taste the homemade preserves or just to have a jolly good time, the Burnside Retirement Village’ annual fete is sure to please. The fete, now in its 14th year, has raised thousands of dollars that has helped pay for a range of activities and equipment at the retirement village, including birthday lunches and Christmas-in-July functions. Village resident Marlene Gorman said the day was a chance for the community to check out some of the fantastic things on offer and for residents to have a good time. “And if we do make some money, we can put it in our community fund … and purchase things just to make it a little bit more comfortable for residents,” Ms Gorman said. “Not everybody is able to get out and about to functions outside of the residence, so it’s

MY PLACE Ajay Pasupulate, 42, migrated to Australia 15 years ago. He calls Taylors Hill home and was one of 16 ‘active’ community members to be profiled as part of Melton council’s I Belong exhibition. He speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey. I built my first house in Taylors Hill in 2010 and I’m still living there. I’m also building my second house in the Melton township. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? It’s very secure here and the people are very friendly. Where I live, there are all different nationalities and my neighbours are all very friendly people. I also like the parks, the recreational facilities and there are plenty of options for kids’ schools. What would you change about the area if you could? I don’t think much needs changing … but I can say the roads need to be improved and more traffic signals for pedestrians. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? The Caroline Springs lake – that’s my favourite. I also like the farms at Bacchus Marsh. Bacchus Marsh is a hilly area and when we’re driving back towards Melton, there are lots of beautiful sceneries. The kids enjoy picking fruit. What does “belonging” mean to you? Belonging for me is about diversity. We all come from different nationalities – even in the same family, people are different. But it’s about oneness.
What has been the hardest part about adjusting to life in Australia? It was difficult to a get a professional job initially – it took me a while to get into my profession. I studied a bachelor of commerce and a diploma in information technology back home in India. When I came to Australia, I studied my masters and did some certificate courses related to my profession. But a lot of IT jobs were being outsourced overseas. That’s why it’s been hard for me to find a job in Melbourne, so I’m working in Canberra and come back home every once in awhile. What’s made your journey to adjusting to Australian life a lot easier? Starting my own business. When I couldn’t find jobs in my field, I decided to start a landscaping business. It was important for me to be able to work and provide for my family. I built up a team and did a lot of landscaping work in Melton and Wyndham. What do you think needs to be done to promote a more tolerant, respectful and harmonious society? Local, state and federal governments need to support community groups trying to celebrate diversity and multiculturalism. I hold family-friendly festivals in Rockbank twice a year, so I always need support from the council. The I Belong exhibition was part of Melton council’s Cultural Diversity Week (March 18-26) celebrations.

Salutations to Sri Lanka The Sri Lankan community of Melbourne’s west is ready to ring in their new year, with more than 1500 people expected to descend on Sassella Park. New Year for Sinhala and Tamil communities kicks off on April 14, but the Western Victoria Sri Lankan Buddhist Association will celebrate early, on April 2, at its Aurudu Udanaya festival. Organiser Sisira Gunasekara said the festival was a chance for families and friends to enjoy the most significant day on the Sri Lankan cultural calendar. “This is the most celebrated festival in Sri Lanka,” Mr Gunasekara said. “It’s a really
family-oriented event, and one of the main objectives of this year is to improve family and social harmony, and understanding between Australians of Sri Lankan background and the wider Australian community. “Events of this nature promote cultural diversity and enriches Australia’s multicultural milieu,” he said. The festival starts with a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast at 9am, then cultural dances, music, traditional Sri Lankan games, and other entertainment. Ewen McRae

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE The trains don’t run; what do you do? Kenny Weir finds food. “I’ve never seen so many depressed people in one place!” That’s the desolate text I receive from Bennie. He’s stranded in Laverton and the trains are not running. Neither he, nor anyone else it seems, knows what is going on. He directs me to pick him up at Newport – prematurely as it turns out, but I get the chance to scope out the Hall Street shops – including the Malaysian place I’d heard about. It’s small and tidy – not much more than a take-away, really, with one tall and small table and a bunch of counter/window stools. Still, something about the place feels just right and our stay-at-home dinner options are happily jettisoned for another night … once the tricky transport logistics are finally resolved at Footscray station, it’s back to Newport we head. The Hawkers Lane menu covers much familiar territory, from curry puffs (including a sardine option) and rotis, through to noodles (wok, wet and soup), one-person rice dishes and full-serve mains, such as beef rendang and Nyonya fish curry. This place is brought to us by the same team that operates Wok Noodle at Seddon. Rotis can be served plain or with the likes of peanut sauce, beef rendang and chicken curry, or as wraps. Our fine roti with potato curry ($9) is all good, though the curry is rather more runny than we’d like – a more sticky gravy that sticks to the flat bread would be just the ticket. Bennie makes quick work of his mee goreng
HAWKERS LANE Address: 12 Hall Street, Newport Phone: 9391 0611 ($12.50). It’s a solid, well-cooked outing. My chicken kari laksa ($15) is a variation on regular chicken laksa. The curry sauce blends with the laksa soup to create a very flavoursome brew, while the chicken pieces are heftier and much tastier than the diced or shredded chook routinely found in laksas. For veg, there’s just a single, longish chunk of eggplant – no beans or broccoli or the like. But that matters not, as the chicken, the tofu, two halves of golden boiled egg and mix of two curry gravies combine with the noodles and bean sprouts to produce a top-notch laksa. Hawkers Lane is a real find. The locals must be thrilled. The bare-bones set-up means eating in feels more like just grabbing a quick, unfussy bite, and less like going through the whole restaurant ritual. Yet the service and food quality shine, and we’ll be back for more. Hawkers Lane is a cash-only operation, does not do deliveries and is closed on Sundays. Inspired to take on family violence M
ore than one out of every 100 women in Melton has experienced family violence against them, with reported incidents on the rise since 2007. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Andrew Freeman says that in response to these frightening statistics, the organisation is committed to promoting gender equality and implementing measures to make a real and practical difference in people’s lives.
The messages help to challenge attitudes towards violence against women, as well as rigid gender norms “Djerriwarrh Health Services health promotion team has been at the forefront in leading community response to this most serious of issues,” Mr Freeman says. “Two years ago, we partnered with Melton City Council to help establish the first-ever Melton Women Making It Happen social marketing campaign. “This created awareness of the positive contributions women are making in the community. The campaign, launched in the lead-up to 2015 International Women’s Day, celebrated women’s leadership and independence. “It honoured and profiled 12 Melton women in a poster series, with the campaign getting such a big response that a permanent Women Making It Happen group now exists.
“It has the express purpose of raising ongoing awareness of what too many of the Melton region’s women and children are facing.” Djerriwarrh Health Services has helped the group identify and establish community-based projects such as the Clothesline Project and Walk With Her. Designed originally as a way of supporting women and children who have experienced violence, the Clothesline Project invites the community to create messages and images of support on T-shirts. “The messages help to challenge attitudes towards violence against women, as well as rigid gender norms and stereotypes,” Mr Freeman says. Held for the first time last year, Walk With Her is a community walk designed to highlight the scourge of violence against women and children. “This year, the walk – held at Hannah Watts Park in Melton – attracted walkers of all ages keen to show their solidarity and to demand that the violence stop,” Mr Freeman says. He acknowledges the opportunity Djerriwarrh Health Services has had to actively engage with survivors of domestic violence. “We learn from these brave women and children and constantly aim to inspire community action to tackle this grave societal issue.” Djerriwarrh Health Services, 29-35 Grant Street, Bacchus Marsh. MRI on the spot is tops for Melton I
t’s been four years since cutting-edge MRI technology was installed at Lake Imaging Melton. And, according to manager Eddy Cattapan, the community has taken note of the advantages of having the latest imaging technology close at hand. Mr Cattapan is delighted with the feedback received from patients about the service and convenience of the MRI service. “Patients love that our MRI in Melton means they don’t need to travel large distances to get a scan,” he says. “The short wait times for appointments and ample parking at our Melton site has meant a more convenient experience for our patients.” Producing superb images of the body, an MRI scan is considered the best way to assess abnormalities in soft tissues – including the brain, spinal cord and muscles/tendons. It allows doctors to provide a more accurate diagnosis so a patient can get the appropriate treatment sooner. MRI requires referral from a doctor and is often used to provide additional information to other tests, such as X-rays or ultrasounds. A big advantage of MRI is that it doesn’t use X-rays or radiation and is not known to cause any long-term side effects. Instead, MRI uses a superconducting magnet and
radio waves to obtain highly detailed body images. “Our caring medical professionals take the time to explain the examination to the patient beforehand and then guide them through the scan,” Mr Cattapan explains.
Patients love that … they don’t have to travel large distances Lake Imaging is committed to providing patients and referrers in the Melton region with access to quality medical imaging. This commitment is especially true with MRI, for which the clinic provides an outstanding service that includes short waiting times for appointments (same or next day generally applies) and no out-of-pocket costs for patients with claims covered by WorkCover or TAC. “We also promise reliable and accurate reporting from our team of highly respected radiologists who are at our Melton clinic every day.” Lake Imaging, 103 Unitt Street, Melton. Opens 8.30am-6pm Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday. Appointments and inquiries: 9747 4800 or visit www.lakeimaging.com.au

Vince’s crew turns old into new again V
ince Bartolo has the kind of attitude and business ethos that customers want. He might not put it that way, but the two young mums who came in last year to have their coffee van re-sprayed would probably agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly. Vince owns Auto Passion in Bacchus Marsh. When he and his highly skilled team agreed to spray the van a cheery yellow, it wound up being a much bigger job – and danger was uncovered.
roof chops, custom and candy painting, building a chassis … building a hot rod – I love it all. We all do “When we started dismantling the van – the girls’ new business venture, named Coffee In a Shot – we found the wooden frame was water damaged. This is really dangerous because the van uses electricity,” Vince said. “It needed a new metal frame, roof, side panels and doors. I also fixed it so that water would run off it, not inside. The new business owners and I were both very happy they were out of danger and looking good.” Auto Passion’s expanding crew carries out classic and prestige car restoration work, smash and bumper repairs, steel and fibreglass installation, and custom painting. Vince has recently taken on another qualified panel beater, Gino, and a qualified mechanic/dismantler, Vincenzo. He says it’s another step towards being a one-stop

Day care for the VIPs in your family I
f you have ever considered using family day care for your child, as opposed to a conventional day care centre, consider VIP Family Day Care, a home-based childcare service where educators and parents alike are overjoyed with the service. VIP Family Day Care is run by mother-and-daughter team Gail Sinopoli and Angela Buttigieg, who wanted to offer more families with children aged six weeks to 12 years the nurturing, small-group approach for which family day care is known and loved.
I really wanted Liam’s care experience to feel like an extension of our family – and it really does Mary Cotter, an Irish national who moved to Melbourne with her husband, is absolutely overjoyed with the service she has been offered for her son, Liam. “As we don’t have family nearby, I really wanted a nurturing family feel for my little boy,” she says. “I work in a day care facility myself three days a week, and although I do know it’s a personal choice, for me, family day care suited my needs best.” As the service is run by a qualified early child educator, and only with a maximum of four children per household, Mary knew Liam would get the care and one-on-one attention she wanted for him. “A lot of my friends already used family day care, so that’s how I got onto it,”
Mary Cotter (right) with son Liam and husband. (Supplied)
she says. “I researched it a lot and interviewed a number of family day care operators but when I met Kerri [Liam’s family day care educator], I felt an instant connection and knew I’d found our perfect fit. “Kerri’s own parents pop by, so it’s just lovely for my son to experience that grandparent-type interaction as a part of his
day care experience.” VIP Family Day Care is an approved child care service, which means parents can apply for government subsidies. Group owner Angela Buttigieg says they are proud they exceeded the national quality standards (NQS) in their last accreditation. “Children in our care are given quality educational programs, recreational
programs, and positive experiences,” she says. “These help them achieve developmental and learning outcomes according to national quality frameworks.” VIP Family Day Care, 29/31 Industrial Avenue, Hoppers Crossing. Inquiries: 9360 0689, vipfdc@vipfdc.com. au or visit www.vipfdc.com.au

Educators prime the curiousity factor H
e’s the relatively new principal of Kurunjang Secondary College, but John Mitsinikos, who previously spent many years at Strathmore Secondary College, brings some strong beliefs about education and what it should foster in all students under his care. “I firmly believe that education should foster a sense of curiosity, a strong desire for intellectual growth, a capacity to persist, a sense of creativity and, perhaps most importantly, an ability to appreciate and care for the needs of others,” he says. “All these goals are critical if our young people are to become healthy, effective contributors to our world.” Mr Mitsinikos and his leadership team – three assistant principals, a business manager and seven leading teachers – have an objective to preserve and honour some of the best, most enduring, features of the college. “We include in that the proud history of care for our students, the commitment to developing personal responsibility, and a focus on maintaining a prudent balance of the academic, cultural and physical dimensions of education,” he says. “Preservation, however, is not enough. “In the 21st century, educators must remain ever mindful of the need to adapt in order to prepare students for the many challenges they will surely face. “So we look forward to working with our college community to provide a world-class educational experience for each child who comes into our care.” The leadership team oversees and drives
the priorities identified in the college’s annual implementation plan. “We are committed to strengthening our literacy and numeracy programs, developing VCAL and VET options, clarifying and building our educational pathways, and, ultimately, improving student engagement, connectedness, confidence and outcomes.”
In the 21st century, educators must remain ever mindful of the need to adapt … The college was established in 1986 with about 150 year 7 students. Each year since another year level has been added and additional staff brought on board, until, in 1991, the first year 12 students completed their secondary years. The school is now a Melton landmark, with about 770 students striving to meet their potential. Mr Mitsinikos says the focus this year is on priorities and initiatives to build excellence in teaching, assessment practices, curriculum planning and documentation. “We also aim to build an even more positive learning environment … providing a wide range of opportunities for all students to contribute to the continuous improvement of our school.” Kurunjang Secondary College, 10 Kurunjang Drive, Kurunjang. Let’s make youth safer on our roads Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham councils. The only cost for schools and clubs is a booking fee. F2D, a half-day workshop for year 11 students, focuses on the behaviour and responsibilities of all road users.
It’s why we want to get two great driver education programs into schools There are no scare tactics or direct, hands-on driving instruction, but participants hear real-life stories from police officers, fireys or other emergency services personnel. LAOM, an hour-long session for year 12 students, focuses on alcohol consumption and strategies to avoid drink-driving. A range of drink and drug driving issues are explored in a way relevant to young people. Mr Giddings believes secondary schools and sports groups that have already tapped into these programs should be congratulated. “They have taken up the challenge of participating and should be praised for their enduring and strong commitment to road safety in their local community,” he says. ccording to TAC statistics, a quarter of all car accident fatalities will involve a young person – most often a male – yet to reach their 25th birthday. It’s sad statistics such as this that serve as a call to action for Jim Giddings, chair of RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council. “Young drivers,” he says, “comprise a small proportion of licensed drivers yet are hugely over-represented in road crashes, fatalities and injuries. Immediately after obtaining their red probationary licence, they are at the greatest risk. “It’s why we want to get two great driver education programs into schools and in front of senior secondary students who will soon be getting their licences and on to the roads – when they are most vulnerable to accidents or poor road behaviour. “The two programs – Fit2Drive and Looking After Our Mates – are especially tailored to engage and educate young people, whether in schools, sporting clubs or other groups.” The Fit2Drive (F2D) and Looking After Our Mates (LAOM) programs incorporate the notion that young people have the capacity to change attitudes about risky driving. The programs encourage them to take ownership and responsibility for their own safety on the road – and that of their peers. Delivered in a school or club environment, the F2D and LAOM programs are VicRoads-owned and TAC-endorsed. They’re fully funded by RoadSafe Westgate, in association with Hobsons

Growth just the job for Western BACE S
tarting and running a business is not easy, according to Mark Corrie, Chief Executive of Western Business Accelerator and Centre of Excellence (Western BACE). He says business owners all have stories of facing financial, emotional and physical challenges. “Despite a statistical failure rate of nearly 90 per cent in the first two years of trading, the number of people looking to start a business continues to steadily rise,” Mr Corrie says.
We’re creating a community-driven business hub where people matter “The biggest challenges for a start-up or early-stage business can be the loneliness experienced and the multi-faceted skills needed for success. “Many businesses begin with one or two founders – to have expertise in every aspect is simply not achievable. They need an ecosystem of advisers and support services, which is where Western BACE comes to the fore.” Opened in May, 2015, Western BACE’s primary role is as a hub of enterprise and business development for Melbourne’s west. The company’s role is set to expand considerably as the region’s population soars in the next 20 years – with Mr Corrie saying that growth needs to be matched by a corresponding expansion of employment
32 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 21, 2017
opportunities. “We’re creating a community-driven business hub where people matter, feel like they belong and are supported towards growth and excellence,” he says. “We provide co-working, business acceleration programs, events and workshops. In April, Western BACE will open the LaunchVic funded Digital BACE – a technology rich physical space enabling low-cost access to technology and specialist advice including Digital Marketing, Video & Podcast production, 3D printing, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. “Most importantly, we care about businesses as if they’re our own. If they don’t succeed, neither might we – it’s hand in glove.” Many businesses join Western BACE initially through co-working memberships. These flexible memberships allow business owners to limit their risk by basically “trying before buying” so they can find out for themselves how spaces can be utilised and enjoyed. “Interaction with other members increases networking opportunities, while many businesses use the co-working space to create a geographical barrier between work and home and to be in a productive environment with no distractions,” Mr Corrie says. “We believe in straight talking, with guidance and support directed towards what actually needs to be heard and done. Our innovative Business Accelerator ‘pay as you grow’ financial model means our success is directly linked to business success.”

The huge extended window that centres this attractive facade floods the living room beyond it. There’s a dedicated study, hardwood floorboards throughout all three living zones, and four large bedrooms – all light-filled. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardobe and tiled en suite with spa and twin vanities. The main bathroom is all contemporary with a separate bath and toilet. The kitchen is built along simple lines and has loads of cupboards. It overlooks a second living zone, but the jewel in the entertainment crown is the pitch-roofed pergola beyond. High ceilings with exposed timber, drop-down fans and a bespoke fireplace with a stone facade are features. Set on 605 square metres, with a double lock-up garage, this property’s extras include central heating and air-conditioning.
Using the good bones of its late 1970s architecture this property has been partially modernised, giving big hints of what is possible. The tri-living space features a bricked gas fireplace, fans and high ceilings. The kitchen has hardwood cabinetry and a lovely outlook to the large backyard. The five bedrooms all have built-in wardrobes. The main bathroom has a spa en suite; another bathroom has a shower and separate bath. The house has air-conditioning throughout and there is a carport. In a great spot, close to Station Square shopping centre, schools and train station, this is a property with loads of potential.

SPORT Former Don signs with the Panthers Former Essendon defender Tayte Pears is the latest player to join the new-look Melton South Football outfit. Pears is the fourth former AFL player to join the Panthers during the off season, with co-coach Brendan Fevola the biggest name to join the Ballarat Football League side. Co-coach Sean Tripplett said there was excitement about what Pears could do at the club. He said Pears fielded a number of offers from other clubs before deciding on the Panthers. Pears played 70 games for Essendon. He was one of 34 past and present Bombers players suspended last season by the World Anti-Doping Agency. With the suspension finished, Pears decided not to return to the Bombers and instead focus on a career as a firefighter. He’s hoping to be placed at a station this year.
“I’ve had a relationship with Tayte for a while, as has Brendan,” Tripplett said. “His best mate is Nick Kommer [who has also joined the Panthers]. He just wants to get back to enjoying football. “He was stiff the last few years, with injuries, not to play more games. He just wants to get back to a relaxed environment after eight years in the AFL system.” Tripplett said Pears’ AFL experience would be a big help for the young playing group. He said that despite Pears playing most of his AFL career as a defender, they saw his best spot at the other end of the ground. “We’ll probably look for him to play forward or in the midfield,” he said. “I’ve seen him play forward when I was a scout for Greater Western Sydney. He’s a personal trainer so he’s fit enough to play in the middle.” The signing follows the news that Mitch
Banner has committed to the club full time. He originally planned to play VFL football with Williamstown, but work commitments have prevented that. Tripplett said Banner, who played all his junior football at Melton South before being drafted, was excited about returning to the club. The Panthers, who didn’t win a game last season, are hoping the new faces will transform them. Pears, Kommer, Banner and Fevola will be joined by Mark Lynch, brothers Adam and Mozzie Houli and former Panther Ben Peters. The Panthers have gone to appeal to try and bring back Matt Notman, who is under contract at Melton. The Panthers will start their season on April 8 against Melton. Tara Murray

Darley’s grand chance By Tara Murray Darley hasn’t had many grand final appearances – and now that they’ve made one, they’re aiming to make it count in the Ballarat Cricket Association. The Lions last tasted premiership success when they were still playing in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. They’ve never played in a grand final since moving to the BCA in 2002-03. Coach Heath Pritchard said this year’s grand final against Wendouree will be special for the players and the club. “It’s good to have made it and it’s given us a chance,” he said. “Now we’re there we want to win it and that’s the way we’ll go about it next week. “It’ll mean a lot to supporters at the club, the ones who worked so hard to get a turf wicket in and put the hard work in. “It’s certainly exciting, but it’ll be the players
who feel the win most and they’ll also feel the loss the most.” Playing finals for the first time since 2012-13, the Lions weren’t overawed by the occasion during their semi-final against Mt Clear and carried on their good late season form to produce a 71-run win. The Lions didn’t start well, losing two early wickets, but managed to find partnerships at the right time. Opener Lachlan Herring batted through most of the innings on his way to 116, his third century of the season. “ ‘Locky’ batted really well, as did Bradley Barnes [39] and Drew Locke [45no] – everyone did their job,” Pritchard said. “We were 2-18 then we got a partnership … then at 4-68 we got another partnership and then at 6-157 we got another partnership, which proved to be the difference in the game.” Having made 7-255, the Lions were confident they could get the wickets.
“It’s always hard to make 250 in a grand final,” Pritchard said. “Ben Longhurst got a couple of wickets and knocked over their best players. The others chipped in as well.” Longhurst took four wickets, while Matt Cape took two and Pritchard, Barnes and Sajith Rupasingha one each. In the grand final, the Lions will face Wendouree, which is going for its first flag since 2012-13. Wendouree beat Napoleons-Sebastopol in the other semi-final. Wendouree chased down Napoloens-Sebastopol’s total of 223 with two wickets in hand. The last time the two grand finalists met, in round nine, Wendouree posted more than 300 to seal the win. Pritchard said they would look to keep things as normal as possible in the lead-up to the game. The four-day grand final will be played over the next two weekends.
Rewind and start again would be what Melton Thoroughbreds would like to do after the opening round of the Big V men’s division 1 season. The Thoroughbreds were disappointing in their season opener against Keilor Thunder, in what would be one of the side’s biggest losses in recent years. The week didn’t start well with the Thoroughbreds having to move the game from Melton to Caroline Springs due to issues with their court. Once on court, the Thoroughbreds started slowly and were trailing by 15 points at the first break. One man doing the damage early for the Thunder was former Thoroughbreds guard Jeff Crowe, who had eight first-quarter points and was strong at the defensive end. The second quarter was a little better for the Thoroughbreds but the margin still increased and they trailed 42-24 at half-time. The second half became more free flowing with both teams finding points easier, but the Thunder had the answer for every Thoroughbreds move. The margin was out to 26 points at three-quarter time with the game all but over going into the last. The last quarter didn’t see anything change with the final margin blowing out to 35 points, 100-65. The Thunder won all the key statistics, out-rebounding the Thoroughbreds 58-37, they led the assist count 28-11 and shot at 49 per cent from the field compared to 31 per cent. Ivan Harris top-scored for the Thoroughbreds with 17 points and also had seven rebounds. Skipper Jason Todorov was the only other Thoroughbreds player to reach double figures. Meanwhile the Thoroughbreds under-18 team took out the Vic Country division 3-4 junior championships across the weekend. Tara Murray 59 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 21, 2017

Fit Jets ready to soar
Sharks circle season’s prize
By Lance Jenkinson All that a coach can ask for ahead of the opening round of the season is to have close-to-a-full list of players to choose from. Western Jets’ coach Torin Baker could get his wish for Sunday’s TAC Cup season opener against Northern Knights at Ikon Park. “One of the most exciting things about our pre-season is we’re thinking that we’ll have all bar one of our players available,” Baker said. “That’s in stark contrast to what happened last year when we went into round one with about 15 unavailable.” Even with an almost full list available for selection, the Western Jets cannot go into round one overly confident as their new-look squad needs time to mesh. With a high turnover of players on all TAC Cup lists, they also can’t be certain of the threat posed by the Knights. “We’ve got a whole bunch of new players … and so has the opposition,” Baker said. “That’s the exciting thing about TAC Cup footy, from year to year it can change quite a lot. “All we can focus on is what the attitude is like of our players and their commitment. “That’s been outstanding, from my point of view.” A key focus for the Western Jets in the off season was their work out of the stoppages. Jets coaches drummed into the players what they’re asking for, both offensively and defensively, in contested situations. “We’ve really hammered the contest in as much as possible, and we’re hoping to be really effective in that area,” Baker said. “There’s so many numbers around the ball, you’ve got to be so sharp with your ball-handling and decision-making. “The patterns of running are on the back of that, and also how you defend that … it all happens in such a short space of time,” he said. “So you’ve got to be constantly training it, coaching it and showing players vision of it, and that’s how you’re going to get better at it.” It has been a long pre-season after the Western Jets started their campaign in the first week of November. The lengthy summer on the track inspired a number of players to put their hands up for leadership positions, with Luke Hitch and Nick Stuhldreier voted in as co-captains, Judah Dundon as vice captain and Xavier O’Halloran also part of the leadership group. “All those boys have been enormously impressive,” Baker said. “For Luke and Nick, it’s a fantastic honour and I know they’re super proud to be the captains of the Jets. “It’s something they will look upon pretty fondly in their footy career to be captains of a TAC Cup club. “The players voted all those four leaders in, and it was endorsed by the rest of the club.”
Let there be no illusions, Hillside Sharks want to play Essendon District Football League division 1 finals for the first time. The Sharks narrowly missed out on finals last season by percentage behind third and fourth-placed Westmeadows and Oak Park – and they don’t want to suffer the same fate this season. Sharks’ football manager Cole Harvey said the club had been on the track since November. “We were obviously disappointed to miss out on finals,” he said. “We lost two games during the year, to Hadfield and Taylors Lakes by big margins and they came back to bite us. “It really showed you can’t take it easy … you have to win every game. “Playing division 1 finals is the goal of the whole club,” he said. The Sharks have the younger brigade coming through this season, and their under-18 side won its premiership. With that in mind, the club didn’t attack the recruiting period too hard. Anthony Aloi and Julian Hemala join from Greenvale, Matthew Patane has come across from Hadfield, Brody Psaila made the move from the Western Region Football League, and EDFL premier division players Joseph Drake and Reece Tompkins also join the Sharks. “Steve [Burns, coach] and I targeted players we need to top up … the list we’ve put together is young, so we’re expecting a fair bit of organic growth as well. “There’s a handful of very good players from under-18s, who will get the opportunity to play senior football this season.” Harvey said Mohamed Taleb, who has taken up body building and will not play football at all, was the only loss from last year’s squad. While spending plenty of time on the track during the off season, the Sharks have been busy off field too, signing coach Steve Burns to a contract extension that keeps him on as coach at least until the end of next season. Harvey said it was an easy decision to start contract negotiations after just one season. “Steve’s impact on the whole club, including players and staff has been massive … he is leading the way and has been great for us.” The Sharks start their season on Good Friday against Taylors Lakes, after three practice matches in the lead-up. Sydenham Hillside all set for a finale for the ages The young, the old and a few in-betweeners contributed to Sydenham Hillside’s narrow first-innings lead over Sunshine YCW in a cracking Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 grand final at Town Centre Reserve on Saturday. The pup of the Storm team, young gun Declan Highgate, was the chief destroyer with the ball on day two, while the veteran of the side, Warren Hackney, set up the weekend with a half century. After securing a 13-run first-innings lead, the Storm will go into day three on 1-30, an overall lead of 43 and, more importantly, with their destiny in their own hands. “Finishing fourth, we were coming in the lower ranked side, so the pressure was on us to win the game,” said Storm skipper Kane Twentyman. “Now Sunshine YCW have to come at us and try to take the game back.” With two days remaining, Sydenham Hillside will need to be at its best to fend off 60 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 21, 2017
Sunshine YCW. Day three will be critical for the Storm, but Twentyman is confident his side can improve on its first-innings batting. “We’ve got some guys that owe us – we’ve had four ducks and two run-outs,” he said. “If we can eliminate those errors and make them get us out, we’ll set ourselves up beautifully.” Sydenham Hillside posted 221 off 72.4 overs in its first dig. As he has done so often over the years, Hackney provided the backbone of the innings with 56 at the top of the order. “That was a good steadier for us,” Twentyman said. “He just put away the bad balls and got that 50 in pretty good time.” Twentyman (41) and Ameya Naik (36) combined for a vital 73-run fourth wicket stand. The Storm innings had stalled a bit until late runs from tailenders Tristan Krizanic (23) and Alex Hassett (16no). Tharanga Jayawardhane was the pick of the YCW bowlers with 4-61 off 23.4 overs.
With pristine conditions over the course of the first weekend, the Storm bowlers needed to bowl at their best. Twentyman applied the pressure with an economical 3-40 off 17 overs, but it was Highgate who sent shockwaves through the YCW order in his second spell. He finished with 4-51 off 16 overs, but his second spell was devastating, including a block in which he took 3-5. YCW was dismissed for 208. “He came on and cleaned their tail up,” Twentyman said. “He was just too good, too fast.” The third day’s play will begin at 1pm on Saturday. In north-west division, Sunshine United has a major task in front of it against Seddon, which went to stumps on day two of the four-day grand final on 6-374 off 160 overs at Laverton Park. United had no answer for Seddon opener Ben Speake, who made 204 not out. Lance Jenkinson

Hitch on the ride of her life with the Western Jets Emmerson Hitch’s first foray into football ended with a broken arm. Not deterred, three years later when she discovered Melton Centrals had a girls side, she returned to the football field. “I started playing when I was 12-13 with the boys for a bit and I broke my arm,” she said. “Mum and dad wanted me to pick another sport and I played basketball for three years. “When I heard that there was a Centrals girls side they said go for it.” Unbeknown to Hitch, her talents were discovered by those at the Western Jets and she was invited to trial for the Jets girls team. On the weekend, she was part of the inaugural Western Jets TAC Cup girls side. “It’s absolutely amazing and a major honour,”
she said. “I only just recently came back to football and had no idea. One day after work mum was like ‘have you checked your email and your Facebook’? “There was an invitation to try out for the Jets. I went to every training and took so much out of it.” Hitch, who plays mainly in the midfield, said the first goal was to perform for the Jets, and then possibly look at an AFLW career. She would love to play with the Western Bulldogs, the club she has supported her whole life. “It would be a dream to play in the AFLW, I couldn’t explain how much it would mean to me to be able to play for the Bulldogs.” Hitch isn’t the only Centrals player to be
selected for the Jets. Lachlan Phillips was selected in the under-16 squad. This year was the first time he was asked to try out for the squad. “It feels pretty good,” he said. “I’ve been playing football for about eight years and enjoy it heaps.” Phillips, who plays both half-back and on the ball, said the focus was on improving his game. “Hopefully I can have a better season than last year,” he said. “I’ve got three more games to go after already playing one practice match. “We’ll have the state carnival on the holidays. Hopefully we can play well and I can get picked for more squads in the future.” Tara Murray

Mustangs host tournament For many clubs, hosting a junior tournament wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary. But for Melton Hockey Club hosting a junior tournament over the next two weekends is a massive milestone. With the club at its new home at the Bridge Road Sports Precinct, the Mustangs now have facilities to host bigger scale events. At their old home at Mowbray College, the club didn’t have running water, had only one toilet and the pitch had been deemed unsafe. Mustangs Kellie McLaren said to be able to hold the competition was a massive boost for the club. The competition is a round robin format with each age group to be played across three days. The under-12s and under-14s play this weekend and the under-16s and under-18s the following. The first day of the second weekend will also coincide with the opening of the new facility and celebrate the club’s 40th anniversary. Tara Murray

Hayden Castle turned up the heat for the Eagles with both the bat and ball. (Damian Visentini)
Steady nerves seal title By Tara Murray Eynesbury Eagles overcame early nerves to seal victory in the Western Suburbs Churches & Community Cricket Association’s A.E. Lowe Shield grand final on Sunday. The Eagles didn’t start well, despite clearly being the best team all season. West Melbourne was on fire with the bat early, and it looked like the Eagles were in for a long, tough struggle. Eagles’ skipper Luke Castle said victory looked way off at tea on day one. “To be honest … I thought we would be chasing 500,” he said. “We only had three players from last year’s grand final and, for a lot of players, it was their first grand final in a long time. There was definitely some nerves.” Castle’s brother Hayden and Jason Compton produced spells after tea that turned the game on itself. “They brought the game back to us,” he said. “They bowled really tight. They had two really gun bats, and we had been bowling

slightly off, and they kept picking us off. When we started bowling straight, we turned things around.” The Eagles took 8-40 to bowl West Melbourne out for 217, a long way short of the 500 Castle thought they may have been chasing. The Eagles started well and were 0-40 with two overs remaining on day one, when the skipper went out, making for a nervous second day watching from the sidelines. Castle need not worry, with Tristian Francis and Hayden Castle standing up on the big stage. The two entered the match averaging 64 and 78 respectively. Francis had already made a century in the side’s semi-final win.
“They looked a million bucks,” Castle said. “Last year, Tristian failed in the grand final and I think he wanted to make amends. Credit to him, he produced the best innings I’ve seen this year, and we’ve made quite a few centuries and good scores. “He couldn’t walk down the hallway of his house before the match due to a knee injury. He taped it up and managed to get the job done.” Castle said Francis will have scans to determine the extent of the injury. The Eagles made the runs with four wickets in hand (6-218) and more than a day’s play left. For Castle, it was a special moment in his first season as coach after returning to his junior club. He had previously played in the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association. “It’s a credit to the committee and club for backing me in,” he said. “Jim Herlihy, the president, had faith in the 12 players we picked. “It’s a relief. I had a lot of doubters early on, but I’m so thankful for the boys who helped me out to help get the job done.”
Melton Swimming Club members tasted success at the recent Tasmanian state age swimming championships. The club’s swimmers returned from Tasmania with five medals and 53 personal bests. Kayla Jones was the standout, winning three silver and one bronze medal, making four A finals and a B final. Manar Mahfouz won bronze in the 100 metre butterfly for his age group, making five A and B finals across the event.
Cricket
Bacchus Marsh secured two premierships in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. While their top sides had been knocked out, the Bulls F-grade and G-grade teams made it through to the final game of the season. The F-grade side bowled Gisborne out for 118. The Bulls made the runs with ease to secure their third F-grade flag in four years. In G-grade, the Bulls also defeated Gisborne.

Let safety colour your choice So, you have your eye on a new car with all the high-tech bells and whistles … but have you thought about the safety impact of your colour choice? Since statistics place black cars as 47 per cent more likely to be involved in accidents than cars of other colours, it seems prudent to think about your choice. Here’s how other colours rate on the safety scale: 1. Yellow – stands out in rain and fog, and at dusk and dawn – also good at night and contrasts with bitumen. But you have to live with the ‘taxi’ look. 2. Pink – gaining in popularity for ladies’ cars, pink’s a very safe shade because it always stands out, it doesn’t merge with streetscape colours, and it contrasts well with the road bitumen. 3. White – good road contrast, more clearly seen in low-light, but not so good in fog or pouring rain. 4. Orange – some suggest this is the safest colour of all, but it’s not likely to be the most popular choice. 5. Gold and silver – stand out in daytime, reflect lights at night; but watch out during heavy rain when the headlights’ goldish or silver tinge merges with water spray. Silver is the second highest colour involved in crashes (at dusk and dawn), 15 per cent more than other colours. 6. Blue and grey – tend to blend in with daytime skies while darker shades can seem black at night. While black, white and silver cars tend to hold their resale value better than their counterparts, the safety of these shades needs to be factored in every bit as much as their appeal. Carole Levy
Black cars have better resale value, but what about the colour’s safety factor?

ROD’S VERDICT A surprisingly enjoyable package.
he Civic has become a large car. And a safe one. But I wonder about some of the latest safety ideas. This has a screen to show you the trailing traffic on the left when you activate the left flasher. I guess it covers a blind spot and tells you if there’s a bike coming up the inside but really, what’s the left mirror for? At times I got urgent warning beeps about what I have no idea; I couldn’t see anything untoward. I love the leather seating and the interior is pleasant and nicely appointed but the instrument cluster and the centre screen both get very busy, almost a case of information overload. And given what the RS costs and its big centre screen, where’s the embedded satellite navigation? And the touchpad radio controls are clumsy, especially when moving. But it’s very pleasant to drive, the interior is generous with room for a couple of adults up back and the boot is substantial. And I liked the ability to hook my phone and all its contents into the car’s entertainment system. So you can use your phone’s navigation as long as you have coverage.

he Civic RS is something of a Jekyll and Hyde. With light controls and modest power delivery on light pedal it seems rather sanitised; anything vaguely offensive has been sterilised away. But get it out on a stretch of lonely, twisting road, give it some pedal and the surprises start. The handling is great. It tracks around the bends with precision and at the end of one it doesn’t need time to settle at all, it’s ready for the next. There is a feeling of solidity here that is not in evidence around town. And the little turbocharged motor is nicely responsive and very eager. It interacts beautifully with the CVT transmission to keep the turbo bubbling. Quick off the line and quick to overtake. The cost of good handling is ride quality but, while the suspension is certainly firm, it’s seldom sharp. My only complaint with the underpinnings is that the low-profile tyres get noisy over coarse bitumen and poor surfaces – loud enough to drown the audio, which, by the way, isn’t brilliant. A good family car with bonus fun when wanted.
