By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton MP Don Nardella told parliamentary auditors he lived in an Ocean Grove caravan park instead of his second residence in St Kilda because the latter was “not spacious enough”. Pressure is mounting on Premier Daniel Andrews to persuade Mr Nardella to pay back more than $174,000 claimed as a second resdidence allowance and to quit Parliament.
‘‘
A simpler option might have been to relocate to the second residence - Auditors
’’
And Victoria Police could investigate Mr Nardella over allegations he rorted taxpayer-funded allowances, with a spokeswoman confirming the matter would be allocated to an investigator. A report by auditors PricewaterhouseCoopers, tabled in Parliament last week, revealed Mr Nardella had been claiming a second residence allowance since 2010 while living in the Ballarat suburb of Lake Wendouree. The total of his claims is $174, 836. Mr Nardella told the auditors that following a relationship breakdown in 2014 he entered into an informal arrangement with family members to live at an Ocean Grove caravan park, where he would make fortnightly payments of $200. But Mr Nardella has been accused of not being able to provide enough evidence to support his claims that Ocean Grove was his principal place of residence.
The former deputy speaker, who now sits as an independent crossbencher, failed to show auditors banking and health insurance correspondence or provide tax returns, a postal address and utility bills as evidence. He did provide a driver’s licence, vehicle registration details, electoral roll records and receipts for minor capital works. “The member advised that there was no separately metered electricity at the caravan park,” the auditor’s report stated. “The member advised that utility costs were incorporated into the fortnightly payment.” But the auditors slammed Mr Nardella’s living arrangements as “non-prudent, non-arm’s length, potentially non-commercial (low “rent”), and arguably opportunistic, designed to ensure continued enjoyment of the second residence allowance”. “The member already had a second residence in Melbourne so that, at the time, a simpler option might have been to relocate to the second residence in Melbourne or his Melton constituency,” the auditor’s report stated. “The member stated that the accommodation in St Kilda [second residence at the time] was not spacious enough. “Viewed from the perspective of an average person on the street, and objective observer, a position could be taken that the arrangement in this period with the member’s close family may have been entered into to ensure that the member would continue to receive the second residence allowance.” Mr Nardella has so far refused to pay back the money and has since moved out of the Ocean Grove residence. He declined to comment.

LEON NEWTON (FRONT), ERIC DAWS, CHERRY WATERBURY AND BRUCE CARBOON
Script for a theatre revival Amateur theatre enthusiast Leon Newton wants to “get the show on the road again” after a 20-year hiatus. The Darley man says it’s been two decades since the Bacchus Marsh Players performed at the Bacchus Marsh public hall. In the hope of getting locals interested in an amateur theatre group, he’s organised a public meeting for next weekend and is calling on Melton and Moorabool residents to share their ideas for a winter-spring season. “An amateur theatre production is always a lot of fun for audiences, the performers and all the off-stage crew as well – everyone can participate,” he says. The meeting will be at Lerderderg library, 215 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh, from 2pm on Saturday, April 8. Details: theatre3340@gmail.com or call 0418 146 161 Sumeyya Ilanbey

CCTV safety trial puts neighbourhood in the loop Residents in one Diggers Rest street will soon start “electronic” patrols as part of a community CCTV link-up. Not-for-profit group Community Against Crime (CAC) will co-ordinate the trial community safety cam program, which involves installing CCTV cameras at all 21 homes along Teatree Street. The idea is to get everyone in the neighbourhood involved, and to give residents access to each other’s CCTV footage. CAC director Tim Payne said the program could help residents feel safer knowing that
their neighbourhoods were being monitored round the clock. “This allows the community to have more input without the need to patrol the streets,” Mr Payne said. “At the moment, you’ve got people patrolling the streets, and that’s quite dangerous … now you can electronically patrol the streets.” Mr Payne says CAC is relying on donations to get homes equipped with CCTV cameras, but he hopes local businesses and councils will soon get involved. Teatree Street resident Thomas Creek said
the idea for the program was discussed after a community safety forum at Diggers Rest last September. He said while there hadn’t been any break-ins on the street, residents are still worried as nearby streets have been targeted. “With any incident that usually happens, the police are always asking for CCTV footage,” Mr Creek said. “I understand some people might not like the idea of our program for privacy reasons, but there’s a group of us who do … and, hopefully, this idea can take off.” Sergeant Rob Henley, of the Melton Crime
CFA burn-off on hold By Sumeyya Ilanbey Noelle Carroll knows all too well the risks of grassfires breaking out near her Mt Cottrell home. Each year she’s witnessed black plumes of smoke blanketing the skies. And while she understands living on a city fringe means the risk of grassfire is particularly high, she has always hoped her efforts, and those of authorities, could mitigate against the dangers. Ms Carroll says she’s diligent about mowing her grass and keeping her surrounds tidy, but she feels let down by the Country Fire Authority, which didn’t burn off near her McMillan Parade home in the Chartwell estate this season. The grass in some areas is “shoulder high”, she says, and while no fires have directly affected the estate this season, there have been several nearby. She claims there hasn’t been a burn-off in her estate since 2015. Ms Carroll wrote to the state government last week in the hope it will ensure burn-offs are conducted as scheduled each year. “I rang [Melton] council in January 2017 about this season’s burn-off, and they informed me that it had been ordered and that a permit was given in December 2016 to the Truganina fire brigade,” Ms Carroll wrote. “Well, fast-forward to March 2017 and we are still waiting for our burn-off. Chartwell [estate] is supposed to be the evacuation point for surrounding residents – not this season.” Ms Carroll has contacted her local brigades, including CFA District 14 headquarters, several times. But she says she’s been told the conditions for burn-offs have not been right. This is despite the Bushfires and Natural Hazards CRC outlook for southern Australia’s 2016-17 bushfire season predicting a “higher than normal risk” for this summer. The report, released last August, also warned that above-average rainfall and temperatures predicted for spring would promote late growth. “This could see rapidly escalating fire behaviour later in summer,” the report stated.
Noelle Carroll with her dog, Noodles, in long grass beside her property. (Dennis Manktelow)
A CFA spokeswoman said a planned burn-off had been scheduled, but authorities were waiting for the right conditions. She did not comment on Ms Carroll’s claims there hadn’t been a burn-off in the Chartwell estate since 2015. “It is important to keep in mind that burning
off is only one way of reducing hazards – ploughing paddocks or slashing are others,” she said. “Planned burning will only occur if the conditions are suitable … the community should have every confidence.” The state government was contacted for comment.
Investigation Unit, said while he couldn’t comment on the safety program, CCTV footage was a vital part of any police investigation. “We’ve been blessed with some of the footage we’ve been able to get from residents – it really is a powerful tool for us investigators,” Sergeant Henley said. “If residents want local councils and police to get involved, a memorandum of understanding would need to be drafted and signed, so everyone knows what’s going on.” Details: communityagainstcrime.org. Cost of local democracy goes up Councillors will cost Melton ratepayers more than $360,000 a year for the next four years after their numbers were increased from seven to nine at last October’s local government elections. Melton councillors receive the statewide $32,455 maximum as an allowance including superannuation, while the mayor receives $103,631. All nine councillors voted to accept an officers’ recommendation to award themselves the maximum allowance. In a report to the March 6 council meeting, officers said the current budget had factored allowances for two more councillors at the maximum rate. The proposal is now out for public feedback, with the proposed allowances advertised until next week. After the 28-day advertising period (which started on March 6), officers will schedule a meeting to hear submissions. A further report including public feedback will then be presented at the June 30 council meeting. The Local Government Act requires all councils to review and determine councillor and mayoral allowances within six months of an election, or by June 30 the next year, whichever is later. “The allowances … will remain in place until the next review after the 2020 general elections,” the report stated. Victorian councillors last received a pay rise of 2.5 per cent in December last year. The $360,000 total allowances doesn’t include the out-of-pocket expenses that councillors are entitled to be reimbursed for. Submissions: www.melton.vic.gov.au. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Bacchus Marsh Lions Club is asking people to lend a hand and help raise money for this year’s Good Friday appeal. The club is looking for volunteers to rattle tins, collect donations and set a new record in the lead-up to Good Friday on April 14. Bacchus Marsh locals raised more than $32,000 for the Good Friday appeal last year, and club president Mark Robson is hoping to top that next month. “We are offering you the opportunity to be one of our enthusiastic supporters and help set a new record in 2017,” Mr Robson said. “If you have spare time, either in the days
leading up to Good Friday or on the day itself, please donate that time and assist in raising funds.” Lions Club volunteers will be at the Bacchus Marsh fire station from 9am on April 14. But there will be plenty of opportunities to donate before then, Mr Robson said. There will be Good Friday appeal purple donation cans at local businesses and, closer to the date, volunteers will be rattling tins outside shops. Details: 0419 120 895 Sumeyya Ilanbey

Last year, motorists fed up with traffic congestion called for the duplication of Taylors Road. Brimbank council owns the road to the west of the intersection, the state government owns the eastern side. Brimbank infrastructure and environment director Neil Whiteside said the council had been lobbying for the western side of Taylors Road to be included in the state’s arterial road network. “Council has been advocating for some time that this section of road … be declared as a main road, and duplicated, ,” he said. VicRoads did not answer questions from Star Weekly about whether this was in the pipeline.

The removal of a dangerous Delahey traffic bottleneck has been delayed. Work to remove the Kings Road and Taylors Road roundabout has stalled due to delays in relocating utilities such as gas and water mains at the intersection. VicRoads metro north-west operations director Brian Westley said shifting utilities at the intersection had taken longer than expected. Replacing the roundabout with traffic lights is expected to reduce backed-up traffic and improve safety at the notorious intersection. Mr Westley said construction was now due to begin next month and be completed “in late 2017”. “We will keep the community informed of progress,” he said. VicRoads says there could be reduced speed limits and some lane closures, but the intersection would remain open. In May last year, VicRoads announced a date had been set for the $7.3 million removal of the roundabout – rated the seventh worst intersection in Melbourne in a 2014 RACV survey. Work was due to begin in the second half of last year, and a new set of traffic lights was to be operational by May this year. Yet less than two months from the project’s projected completion date, little has been done. The roundabout’s removal has been
supported by St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman and various Brimbank state MPs, including Natalie Hutchins and Marlene Kariouz. Within the past five years, there have been 18 crashes, resulting in five serious injuries, at the roundabout. The government committed $6.1 million in last year’s budget to remove the roundabout and install traffic signals, a pedestrian-operated crossing, new bicycle lanes, upgraded footpaths and a raised intersection.

West ‘betrayed’ by tip decision By Sumeyya Ilanbey Concerned locals say the environment watchdog has “let the west down” following its decision to grant Cleanaway a works approval to expand the Ravenhall landfill. The Environment Protection Authority announced on Friday it had approved waste management giant Cleanaway’s proposal, albeit on a much smaller scale. The approval limits the number of landfill cells to seven on the southern end (Cleanaway had applied for 16 new cells in the north and south); grants landfill area of 96 hectares, with 23 million cubic metres of airspace (the original application requested a landfill area of 210 hectares, with 53 million cubic metres of airspace); and has limited the landfill’s lifespan to 13 years (Cleanaway had requested 30). EPA knowledge, standards and assessments executive director Tim Eaton said the decision followed 13 months of community consultation and expert advice, including an independent planning panel’s report. “EPA considered a range of key issues raised during the assessment period, including odour, noise, compliance, health concerns and landfill gas monitoring,” Mr Eaton said. “Technical experts were appointed to thoroughly assess each of these issues and provide comprehensive advice to EPA to assist with its decision making.” Approval is subject to a number of conditions, and to Cleanaway securing a planning permit. Planning Minister Richard Wynne last year called in Cleanaway’s application and appointed
an independent panel to hear submissions. He received the panel’s report earlier this year and is still considering his decision, Mr Wynne’s spokesman said. Stop the Tip president Marion Martin said residents were shocked by the EPA’s decision, accusing the watchdog of “betraying” the community. “We’re trusting the minister will do the right thing by the community seeing, as we believe, the EPA has betrayed us,” Ms Martin said. “The west is not their dumping ground – we weren’t expecting this from the EPA. With all the submissions made to the planning panel, we thought EPA wouldn’t have granted a works approval. I think they’ve let the community down; they’ve let the west down.”
‘‘
We’re trusting the minister will do the right - Marion Martin thing
’’
Cleanaway chief executive Vik Bansal issued a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange on Friday, saying the works approval was a “critical step” in the approvals process. “The EPA’s decision, subject to the planning minister’s approval, will enable landfilling to continue on the site until approximately 2038 and will support our investment in Victorian operations,” Mr Bansal said. “This highly engineered site … plays a critical role in managing Victoria’s growing residual waste volumes in a safe and sustainable manner.”

By Neelima Choahan, The Age Ravenhall prison officer Matt Kent can still hear the sounds of rioting inmates smashing glass and threatening to kill him. “You better run dogs, cause you are dead,” still rings in his ears, nearly two years later. About 400 inmates at the Metropolitan Remand Centre caused about $12 million damage during a June 2015 uprising set off by the introduction of a smoking ban. Dozens of staff suffered physical and psychological injuries as a result of the 15-hour rampage. Mr Kent had only been a prison officer for eight months when he went to work on the morning of June 30. He said there was a sense of “uneasiness” in the air, and informed his superiors, but was reassured everything was under control. By noon, it became clear everything was not alright. “You could hear this yelling coming from the yard outside … then all of a sudden a siren went off and a code grey was called, which is a riot.” Mr Kent and other officers were asked to lock up inmates and evacuate all staff. “In my time, there was no evacuation drills as to where to go,” he said. “We were told to run.” He made it outside, but was sent back in to help – this time without his radio. During the next 10 hours, the father of two was repeatedly sent into the prison to confront, arrest and contain the rioting prisoners – working without even any water to drink. “I was scared,” he said. “We had nothing,
there was no police, we had no radio, the phones were dead. “There were certain times throughout the afternoon … when I accepted the fact that I [was] not going to get out.” In December, the Department of Justice and Regulation was charged with criminal safety failures over what was the largest prison riot in the state’s history. The department was charged by WorkSafe Victoria with four breaches of workplace health and safety laws, including failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace, and failing to ensure people other than employees were not exposed to risks. Mr Kent is now suing the department. Shine Lawyers general manager Stuart Le Grand said the department had failed to keep Mr Kent safe. Mr Le Grand said Mr Kent and other workers were repeatedly asked to return unarmed to a facility “overrun by high-risk offenders”. He said his firm is taking action on Mr Kent’s behalf to ensure he receives financial support and access to treatment and care while unable to work. Mr Kent is on WorkCover leave. Opposition corrections spokesman Edward O’Donohue is asking the government to apologise to Mr Kent. While refusing to comment on the individual matter, a Department of Justice spokesman said the welfare of its staff was of the utmost importance. Corrections Minister Gayle Tierney said the government continues to support staff affected by the incident.

Teen’s triple treat Bacchus Marsh teen Jye Burton was seven when he started swimming. He loved the feeling of being in the water, but the monotony of the sport was starting to wear him thin. Two years ago, the 14-year-old decided to spice things up a little. He tried out triathlon, and hasn’t looked back since. “Because I got a mixture of three different sports, it helped me enjoy swimming again,” Jye says. Jye, a Bacchus Marsh Grammar student, will be one of only six Victorians representing
the state at the Australian Schools Triathlon Festival championships in New South Wales next month. Jye has only been competiting in triathlons for just over a year and was surprised by his selection. But in preparation he’s been training about 16 hours per week with the help of one of his inspirations – his coach Sam Stewart. “He trains really hard with me and that inspires me to do the best I can,” he says. MY PLACE (Dennis Manktelow)
What’s your connection to Moorabool? We’ve lived in Bacchus Marsh since the end of 1994, so that’s over 20 years. The rural environment appealed to us. What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool? The sense of community and its connection to nature. At the back of our doorstep, we’ve got a beautiful river, bushlands, national parks and a sense of open space.
Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool? Apart from wandering along the river, you’ll find me at Baby Black. It’s got that cozy courtyard – it’s basically my second home. Can you tell us a little about the Friends of the Werribee River through Bacchus Marsh? We’re a group of 40 active members and we hold up to five working bees a year during the
I think our major achievement now is being able to look back and see that a lot of our plants are very well established. They’re preventing weeds from revegetating in the area, and have increased the number of people enjoying the tracks and paths. We rely on volunteers so we often advertise through posters. How important is it for locals to take care of the Werribee River?
What would you change about the area if you could? We are trying to change the weedy areas, by removing a lot of the non-native weeds and thistles and replacing them with native and indigenous flora. [This] attracts people to the area and makes them appreciate their environment, but it also attracts local wildlife – we’ve got wallabies, echidnas, platypus.
What are some of your major achievements?
Our waterways are very important as far as cleanliness for the flora and fauna, and also for aesthetic reasons … but a few years ago, every day from October for a month or two we would see a platypus. It’s become a rare sighting now – maybe once a year.

One of the local landcare members approached us to see if we wanted to start up a group to have other like-minded people to help out. It’s been really good … Melbourne Water and Moorabool shire have been very supportive now.
Do you have any concerns about the future of the river? There’s all the ongoing concerns about oil spills, contamination and pollution risks … at the recent Clean Up Australia Day, we bagged 20 large bags of rubbish. Friends of the Werribee River through Bacchus Marsh will hold its first planting day for the year on Sunday, April 2 from 9.30am-12.30pm at Harry’s Hole, Meikle Street. The next one will be held on Sunday, April 30 at Boyes Close footbridge. For more information, search Friends of Werribee River through Bacchus Marsh on Facebook.

Police call for crash help
Charges laid over spate of party-hire fires
By Goya Dymytrshchak, The Age Tributes are flowing for a young man who was among five men killed within 24 hours on Victoria’s roads. Hayden Kloppers, 22, of New Gisborne, was a passenger in a ute that crashed into a tree and then a shed at Bacchus Marsh about 2am on Saturday. The driver, a 25-year-old Kurunjang man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Hayden’s brother, Joshua, told 9 News he was still in shock.
‘‘
This morning we lost a brother, a close mate … rest - Mitchell McNally in peace
’’
“I just can’t believe he’s gone,” he said. “It just hasn’t sunk in that he’s gone. “I just encourage people not to speed and do stupid things while they’re driving.” Numerous friends remembered Hayden as a gentle giant with big heart, a real larrikin who was taken too early. Hayden’s close friend Mitchell McNally posted on Facebook: “This morning we lost a brother, a close mate, a wonderful kindhearted person. Rest in peace Hayden Kloppers.” Police said the white Holden ute was heading east on Bacchus Marsh Road, at the Avenue of Honour, when the driver lost control. The speed limit is 60km/h on that stretch of road. Detectives are investigating whether speed and alcohol were involved in the crash. Kimmy Richardson posted on Facebook: “RIP Hayden Kloppers, you were such an amazing person with a big heart. I am in so much shock, you always made me laugh and

put a smile on everyone’s face. It’s extremely hard to believe we won’t see that any more.” Matthew Barry Lees said life would not be the same. “Definitely not a phone call you want to get… it sucks to lose a good egg, rest easy Hayden Kloppers … I’ll definitely have a few for you tonight, mate.” Detectives want to speak again to a man who attended Bacchus Marsh police station
to report the crash. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The horror weekend on Victoria’s roads started about 8am on Friday with the death of a 39-year-old man at Warrock, then those of a 27-year-old man at Beaufort, a 66-year-old man at Devenish, and a 24-year-old man at Newhaven. The state’s road toll stands at 55, compared to 78 this time last year.
Four men have been arrested and charged over a series of fires at party hire businesses in Wyndham, Brimbank and other areas of metropolitan Melbourne. Police will allege the men used Molotov cocktails, and in one instance a petrol accelerant, to set off 11 fires and attempt to light others at party hire premises at Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Tullamarine, Hallam, Warragul, Keysborough and Kangaroo Ground between December 20 last year and March 6 this year. The total damage bill amounted to more than $2 million. Wyndham crime investigation unit detectives arrested four people in relation to the spate of fires. Senior Sergeant Matt Noy said three of the men had made full admissions to a number of fires, while the other had not. A 52-year-old Kangaroo Ground man has been charged with 11 counts of arson, a 30-year-old Kurunjang man was charged with 10 counts of arson, a 33-year-old Greensborough man has been charged with four counts of arson and a 36-year-old Kalorama man was charged with two counts of arson. All four men have fronted the court for filing hearings and were released on bail. Three of the men will front Melbourne Magistrates Court on June 7. Charlene Macaulay

Vandals are about to hit the hip-pocket nerve in the Bacchus Marsh Shire. Residents have been warned rate rises will be needed to meet the ongoing costs of cleaning sewers blocked and damaged by vandals.
The annual Red Cross doorknock appeal in Bacchus Marsh has collapsed due to community disinterest, says the group’s Melbourne headquarters. Red Cross development officer Ms Dianne Denny said the Bacchus marsh community had failed to organise a doorknock appeal for the past two years.
New Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie has refused to respond to criticism levelled at him last week by Bacchus Riding councillor Peter Russell and former mayor Marg Card. Cr Comrie’s election as mayor has come under fire from Cr Russell, who questioned why he accepted the position after withdrawing from the mayoral race two days before last Wednesday’s ordinary meeting in Ballan.
Bacchus Marsh RSL plans to lodge an application with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to review a Moorabool council decision allowing a trade supply store to be built in the Avenue of Honour. RSL president Stan Franklin said the organisation was preparing a lengthy application.

How to keep baby cool, happy and safe Littlies are very susceptible to heat stress and, according to Child & Youth Health (www.cyh. com), there are signs and symptoms to watch out for. These include: • Looking unwell. • Floppy limbs and body. • Raised irritability levels. • Drier skin. • Refusing to drink and fewer wet nappies • Fontanelle (soft spot in bub’s head) lower than usual.
Colour package
If these signs are observed, take the child immediately to a GP or nearest emergency department. There are simple ways to avoid this unwelcome scenario and to keep bub cool in the heat: • Maintain fluid intake through extra breast or formula feeding, or small amounts of cool, boiled water. • Give toddlers frozen fruit (watermelon, orange segments) to suck. • Dress lightly – nappy and singlet is ideal. • Regular sponge-downs with lukewarm (never cool or cold) water – or pop them into a lukewarm bath. • Use a fan, but do not point directly at the child. • Don’t let babies sleep in prams, which can be

hot and stifling; remove bassinet pads and liners for better air circulation • Place cool, damp cloths on baby’s body – but regularly check they’re not getting too cold. Try to avoid car travel when temperatures soar, but if it’s absolutely necessary: • Ensure protection from direct sun – use a towel or shade device on car windows. Fine baby skin burns easily and even when outside temperatures aren’t really high car interiors can heat up to dangerous levels quickly – even with air-conditioning on. • Never shade a capsule with a rug or towel – this will restrict air movement and make baby’s environment even hotter.

The older folks, by any other name Who knew? Donald Trump is called Mr Trump by his grandchildren – or so the pundits claim. And here’s you, thinking that Gum-gum from your own grandies was ‘a bit different”. When we have a peek into the world of celebrity grandparent names, we find a smorgasbord of the common through to the downright peculiar. Take, for example, the late Joan Rivers whose grandkids called her either Grammy (so far, so normal) or Nanna New Face. Could that be Joan’s “first defence is attack” choice, or did the kids get creatively concise? Lionel Richie, of course, went for “down with the kids” cool. G-Pa is his grandfatherly moniker, maybe in readiness for a seamless transition to: “Gee Pa, can I have a Ferrari?” Goldie Hawn’s son’s kids call her Glam-ma. Now tell me that doesn’t pile upkeep-pressure on her, when she secretly wants to live in uggies? Goldie’s daughter’s kids, meanwhile, go with the friendly, chirpy Gogo.
“Sharon Osbourne goes for Shazza, which hits just the right note for a plain-spoken woman..” His grandkids call him Peach, but has Martin Sheen scored that name for his smooth cheeks, his fruitiness – or is he just a real peach of a man in their eyes, where it counts most? Debbie Reynolds went by Abba Dabba, perhaps referencing her Wilma Rubble-type looks. Yeah, that’s a stretch, but Abba Dabba does have a certain sweetness, just like her 1968 movie How Sweet It Is! Sharon Osbourne goes for Shazza, which hits just the right note for a plain-spoken woman who, laudably, doesn’t mind any bogan tag. And Sally Field, she of the blindingly humble Oscar thank-you moment, is Granny – no grandstanding for her. The no-nonsense Martha Stewart has a similarly no-nonsense grandmotherly name: Martha. Maybe she ran out of fanciness after plating up 40 million dishes and tying 10 million bows; she was just simplifying things. She wanted “Wolf”, but Blythe Danner wound up being called Lalo, which could be construed as good advice (lay low) from her grandkids who must’ve known that Wolf is genuinely weird. Nor would they want people to think they were calling their dog.
“They call me Mr Trump.” (Getty Images)
So, all you grandparents-in-waiting, be alert but not alarmed: what your grandies call you can certainly turn heads. Carole Levy

Every inch of this extra-wide block has been used to create more space to live. Enter this neat as-a-pin residence in Brookfield from the undercover downlit porch to a welcoming hallway. All three bedrooms are generously proportioned. The main, to the left of the entryway, has a walk-in warrobe and en suite, tastefully appointed in white and grey tiling and with a shower and porcelain toilet. The other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes. The main bathroom shares the grey/white colour story seen elsewhere, creating a relaxing neutrality to the space. The kitchen – white and compact to maximise living dimensions – has stainless-steel appliances. Low maintenance outdoor spaces are well-maintained. Close to transport, schools and shops, the house has air-conditioning and there is a single remote-controlled garage.
On about 600 square metres, in a quiet court close to Kurunjang’s primary and secondary schools, this well-presented abode will have families and investors alike taking note. There are three fitted bedrooms and a study, the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Entry is to a large living room with polished floorboards; these flow into the next-door dining room (as well as the bedrooms). The large family-meals area has slate floor tiles, a split-system, ceiling fan and a wood heater set against an exposed brick wall. This opens to a vast covered pergola, which wraps from the side around to the back, creating enough space to host veritable hordes. The kitchen has dual wall ovens, gas cooktop, dishwasher and brekkie bench. The property has a double garage and pretty gardens out back.

N O I T C U A T A D SOL ‘Firstly, I want to thank Daniel Webber for helping me out of a very bad situation I found myself in with my investment property at 9 James Cook Drive, Melton West. Not only did he take control of what seemed a hopeless situation but he turned a nightmare into a truly awesome outcome all within a month of taking my property into his care. With Daniel’s positive attitude and very firm beliefs, my rundown property was transformed from a property that needed knocking down to a fantastic Auction outcome. Without Daniel and the team at First National Melton I wouldn’t have received the $67,000 above my reserve and the peace of mind of knowing that this matter is now behind me. Honestly if you need help selling your property and find yourself in my situation do yourself a favour and call Daniel Webber at First National Melton. A true gentleman and honest as they come.’

SPORT Sunshine YCW spinner inflicts Storm damage Sydenham/Hillside has copped a Sunday of grand final heartache in Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1. Having taken a narrow first-innings lead of 13 runs into the second weekend against Sunshine YCW, the Storm was left to rue a poor second innings with the bat. Captain-coach Kane Twentyman said after the first weekend that the Storm needed to eliminate errors in its bid to set a handy lead going into the final day. He wouldn’t have been happy when the Storm was left reeling at 6-85 with only two of the top six batsmen scoring more than 20. It didn’t get any better, with the side all out for 141, a lead of 154. Twentyman was the best of the batsmen, finishing 38 not out. But he had little support. Spinner Tharanga Jayawardhane did the damage for YCW with 5-36 off 21 overs in the second innings, leaving Sydenham/Hillside stunned.
Jayawardhane’s bag of wickets, mostly of recognised batsmen, was the turning point. With only a slim lead, the Storm needed early wickets. They got them in the form of both openers gone and the score was 2-29. But YCW looked in control late on day three before a rain downpour caused an early finish to the day. Play started late on day four, with 39 overs lost across the two days. But there was still plenty of time for YCW to get the runs – and it did so with three wickets in hand, finished with 7-160. Twentyman was the best of the bowlers, taking four wickets, but it wasn’t enough for victory. It wasn’t all bad news for the Storm, with its second XI winning the club’s first ever turf premiership. The side needed less than three days to secure the win against Sunshine. Having made 239 on the first weekend of play, the Storm bowlers then stepped up.
They bowled the Crows out for 80, giving the Storm a handy first-innings lead. Charles Buttigieg took four wickets and Andrew Lochhead three. The Storm decided to send Sunshine back in. It proved to be the right decision, with the Crows again struggling with the bat. This time the Storm bowled them out for 72, with No.11 Naveed Hussain the only batsmen to show any resistance. He made 23. Lochhead took another four wickets to take his tally for the game to seven. In other VTCA results, Williamstown Imperials defeated Seabrook in the west A1 grand final, Yarraville Club took out the senior flag and Craigieburn won the north-west A1 premiership. Phoenix changes tack By Tara Murray Melton Phoenix had a tough start to its FFV state league 4 west season, going down 4-0 to Sebastopol Vikings. While the scoreboard indicated a one-sided affair, Phoenix president Mike Kapiris said it was a lot closer than it seemed. “We gave away a penalty in the first half and gave up the lead,” he said. “We then had the flow for the first 15 minutes of the second half before conceding another penalty, which gave them a 2-0 lead. “They capitalised and scored a couple of late goals. The 4-0 result flattered them.” Kapiris said while disappointed, he knows there is much improvement still to come, and plenty of upside to the team. “We had three of our starting line out, and once we get a couple of boys back, we know we’ll be a better side,” he said. “We’ll still be around the top four.” It’s a very different-looking Phoenix side this season, with the club going through a rebuild. Kapiris said the Phoenix were a younger side this year, with a couple of 17 and 18-year-olds lining up. “The last couple of seasons, the club has just missed out on promotion. Now we’re focusing on rebuilding … I think we’ll probably still be up there.” The have been plenty of changes off field as well, with the club parting ways with Peter Schwellinger, who had coached the team since 2015. Ozzy Inal, who coached the side to six wins in the past seven games of last season, was appointed as Schwellinger’s successor. But two weeks into pre-season the club changed tack, appointing Richard Antczak as coach. Antczak has played soccer for the Phoenix on and off for the past 20 years, including 16 games last season. Phoenix’s next match is against Balmoral FC under lights on Saturday night. It was a better start to the season for Spring Hills in state league 5 west against Kyneton District. In their first season back in state league 5 after relegation, the Stallions piled on the goals for a 7-0 win. The Stallions led 3-0 at half-time. Blake Dantino scored a hat-trick, while skipper Dylan Magro scored twice. Halil Hussein and Jordan Mancini scored the other goals. Spring Hills hosts Laverton Park on Saturday night. Melton rugby fired up by player influx Two years after if was unable to field a senior side because of a lack of players, Melton Rugby Union Club could possibly field two teams this year. More than 50 senior players have been training during the off season, leading the club to look at the idea of having a reserves side for the first time. Club vice-president Liam Devlin said about 10 more players were needed to make a second team viable and he was excited by the possibility. “The numbers have kept growing – we have a record number of people training,” he said. “With so many players, it’s hard to give everyone game time and we want everyone to play. “If we can get a few more interested players in the next couple of weeks we’ll look at having a reserves side in division 3. “A lot of people in the Melton area are interested in getting involved in rugby union. How can you say no to them?” It’s a long way from the start of 2015, when the club went into recess for 12 months because it did not have enough players. Last season, the Warriors won the B-grade minor premiership, before losing in the grand final to Ballarat. Devlin said it wasn’t only the open-age group in which the club was seeing growth. He said they were looking at having multiple teams in various age groups, after having one team in each age group last season. “There’s been huge growth in the under-12 and under-14 age groups,” he said. “We’re looking at definitely having more than one team in the under-12s. “The under-14s were at the benchmark to have a second side, so we’re looking at having two teams. “There’s a good chance of having two under-16s teams, as well.” The senior side has had a good off season including a 68-0 win against Ballarat in a grand final rematch. Anyone interested in playing at Melton Rugby Union Club in any age group can contact Liam on 0457 008 476. Tara Murray 45 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 28, 2017

Leagues join football forces Essendon District and Western Region football leagues will again join forces in women’s football. The two leagues ran a successful joint girls’ competition for a number of years, which then expanded from one age group to three – now the two leagues will have a joint women’s competition this year. With AFL Victoria handing control of women’s football to local leagues, the two leagues decided to combine to ensure there are enough teams for the new competition. At this stage, the women’s league should have 12 teams, eight from the EDFL and four from the WRFL, a mixture of new and established sides, while a couple of clubs will field their lower grade sides. VFL side VU Spurs will field their fourth side in the competition, while Pascoe Vale’s reserves
will also run out in the joint competition EDFL’s Sunbury Lions, which played in Victorian Women’s Football League’s division 2 last season, along with former VWFL north west teams Roxburgh Park and Jacana, will also field sides again. Keilor and Craigieburn have new sides, along with Glenroy, which has Collingwood forward Moana Hope on the coaching panel. From the WRFL, there are two existing and two new teams. North west reigning premiers Manor Lakes, along with Glenorden, also from north west division, will again field sides. Caroline Springs and Tarneit will field teams for the first time. The two leagues will also have separate youth girls, under-15 and under-12 sides. Tara Murray

The Western Jets girls side remains without a win after two rounds of the inaugural season. On Saturday, the Jets faced Northern Knights, another side looking for a victory. The Knights won a low-scoring affair 6.7 (43)-1.1 (7). Sharnie Whiting was the goalscorer for the Jets. Caitlyn Cashi was named best for the side. The Jets have a short turnaround to their next game – they will face the Calder Cannons on Wednesday night.

Lakers love a top shot By Lance Jenkinson Caroline Springs is limbering up for its first shot at the Western Region Football League division 1 competition. The Lakers were elevated into the top flight by beating Yarraville-Seddon in last year’s second-tier grand final. In the first year of a three-year plan to take the Lakers to the top flight, they hit the fast-forward button. Lakers football manager Marc Raak said the club was rapt. “We’re absolutely delighted with the position we’re at right now,” he said. “We’re going into uncharted waters and don’t really know what to expect. “We can only worry about what we can control – and that’s, obviously, making sure we had a good pre-season. “Our practice matches, internal training and intra-club matches have been first class, so bring on the year.” Caroline Springs will open the season against Albion at Town Centre Oval on Saturday. That match-up was at the top of the Lakers’ fixture requests to open the season at home. “It’s a huge game for our club, so we’re expecting a big crowd. We’ll unfurl the flag from last year’s grand final. “We’ve got all of our past players who played in our first game at Caroline Springs six years ago coming down.” Caroline Springs has strengthened its list from last season, but will it be enough? So many sides have made the giant leap to the top division and returned to where they came from 12 months later with their tails between their legs. In new recruit Keenan O’Shea, the Lakers have recruited their leader of the future. O’Shea, brought in from St Albans, has been named co-captain with Jason Degabriele and Mathew Sutton. “It’s sort of the young, the middle and the old,” Raak said. “ ‘Sutts’ being a bit of a wise head and Jase having experience. “It’s a bit of a transition arrangement … O’Shea, maybe in the next two to three years, could hold the mantle himself.” Doug Thomas, a one-time Werribee-listed player, will add to Caroline Springs’ midfield depth. Home-grown youngsters Mitch Bongiovanni (from St Albans) and Jayke Ewar (Deer Park) will add speed and versatility. With the new inclusions and the natural improvement of the list from last year, Caroline Springs fancies its chances of survival. “We’re not going to put too much expectations … we’ve got to win a few games to stay there,” Raak said. “We think our list goes deep into the reserves.” Caroline Springs expects key position player Brian Lake to play the majority of games. Lake has upped his television commitments with Fox Footy, but is still champing at the bit to get on the ground for the Lakers. 46 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 28, 2017
Gisborne has won back-to-back Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup premierships. The Dragons were dominant against Sunbury, first with the bat and then the ball. The Dragons made 9-307 from their 120 overs before bowling Sunbury out for 143. Jay King was named man of the match. In B grade, Lancefield defeated Wallan. The GDCA will hold its annual awards night on Wednesday. Bacchus Marsh bowler Madushanka Ekanayaka has already been named the McIntyre Cup bowler of the year. He took 41 wickets during the regular season. St Anthonys’ Paul Scott was the B-grade batsman of the year, with 522 runs at an average of 87.

The Western Jets’ boys team has had a tough start to the season with an opening loss to Northern Knights. The Jets were slow out of the blocks and trailed by 25 points at the first break. They worked their way back into the game to make the scores level at three-quarter time. The Knights found another level in the final quarter to secure a 14.12 (96) - 12.8 (80) win. Cameron Rayner, Judah Dundon and Lachlan Fogarty kicked two goals apiece for the Jets. Rayner and Fogarty were named the best players in the loss. This week the Jets will face Calder Cannons on Saturday morning.

The Central Highlands Football League season starts this week. On the Saturday, Bungaree faces Dunnstown, Buninyong takes on Springbank in a grand final rematch, Clunes hosts Skipton, Daylesford versus Beaufort, Gordon plays Ballan, Carngham Linton takes on Creswick and Newlyn plays Hepburn. Round one concludes on Sunday with Learmonth hosting Waubra. “He’s real keen,” Raak said. “He’s been training the house down.” In other round one games, four-time defending champion Deer Park will unfurl its premiership flag at a blockbuster clash with Altona, a preliminary finalist last year. New coach looks to take RDFL to interleague glory
Arron Bray has been appointed to coach the RDFL’s interleague side. (Supplied)
New Riddell District Football League interleague coach Arron Bray will use his knowledge of the competition to put together a strong team. Bray coached Broadford for four seasons, including its past two preliminary finals, and was last week appointed to the interleague role. He replaces Matt Power, who coached the league for four seasons. The team last year lost to Alberton Football League. This year the RDFL will face West Gippsland in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships on May 13. Bray said former AFL coach Jeff Gieschen urged him to apply for the role, and he is looking forward to it. “It’s a good starting point and something I wanted to put my hand up for,” he said. “You get to coach the best players in the league.
“The last four years I’ve prepared to coach against the other sides, so I know their strengths and weaknesses.” Bray doesn’t have long to settle on a team, though, with the match less than two months away. “I’ll get assistant coaches on board and see who is in form and who isn’t,” he said. “I’ll certainly make contact with league coaches and see whether they’ll give up some time to help. They’re the ones at the coalface.” Bray said he knows little about West Gippsland, but would like to get out to a few matches between now and game day. He said if the RDFL could field a full strength side, it would have a good chance of winning. “I’ll get out to a few games and also look at getting to some training sessions,” he said. “If the players are willing to jump on board and
buy into the program you’re trying to set up, it makes it a lot easier … I understand some coaches will want to protect a few players due to injuries and fitness levels though. “Those who do play get to have it on their playing resume for the rest of their lives.” RDFL operations manager Steve Williams said Bray’s passion for coaching really stands out. Chris Wilson will continue as under-18 coach. He coached the side to a win last year against Alberton. The RDFL will host the interleague games, two football and two netball games, at Macedon’s Tony Clarke Reserve. Ciara Stewart has been appointed senior netball coach, while Michelle Rix will coach the under-17s. Tara Murray
Lions still in the chase By Tara Murray Darley has a fight on its hands if it’s to win its first Ballarat Cricket Association premiership. The Lions conceded first-innings points on the first weekend of the grand final against Wendouree. Both sides looked good with the bat at times, before the bowlers stepped to the fore. Lions captain-coach Heath Pritchard knows the situation could be a lot worse. Batting first, Wendouree made 268, with Pritchard taking five wickets. The Lions made 203 after a middle order collapse cost them dearly. Lachlan Herring, Hasitha Wickramasinghe, Matt Cape and Ben Longhurst all made 40s for the Lions. The rest of the batsmen made 25 between them. “We were staring at chasing 320 at one point so to restrict them to 268 was a really good performance,” Pritchard said. “Then we were 0-70 and looking good before we lost a couple of wickets and a couple of decisions didn’t go our way. “The tail then responded to get us to 200.” The Lions had the opportunity to bowl four overs at Wendouree late on day two. They got the perfect start with Pritchard snaring nightwatchman Sam Jackson for a duck. Pritchard said that despite conceding first-innings points, he was proud of how his side responded on a number of occasions during the opening two days. “They haven’t given up,” he said. “There’s a lot of character in this group and I couldn’t be prouder. “We bowled really well and the openers batted well. “Matt Cape was dropped early on and made them pay, and Ben Longhurst was really important.” The Lions, in their first grand final since moving to the BCA, are ready for the fight that awaits them next week. Pritchard knows if things go their way they could get the reverse outright win. “We need a few early wickets next week,” he said. “If we keep them under the 240, 250 or even 260, we think that’s something we can chase on the final day. “If if gets to over 300 it will be very difficult to get the runs. “We’re not ahead in the game, but we’re not out of it. “We know we can bat a lot better than 206 in the second innings.” The Lions’ under-16 side celebrated a premiership with victory against NapoleonsSebastopol. The Lions lost a single wicket chasing down Napoleons-Sebastopol’s 108. Bryce Galea top scored with 54 before retiring to give the other batsmen a chance at the crease.

Thoroughbreds pull up short Melton Thoroughbreds fell short against Bulleen Boomers in Big V men’s division 1 on Sunday, with just seven players suiting up. Liam Allison and Broden Collins, who played in round one, were both missing to the youth league side, so assistant coach Michael McCallum ended up on court, while Koby Skenderis played in both the men’s and youth league games. The Boomers led by 15 points at the first break to put the game on their terms. The Thoroughbreds didn’t give up though, winning the second quarter by three points and the third quarter by one, to trail by 11 points at the last break. With fresh legs, the Boomers ran out the game, and won 80-72. Four of the Thoroughbreds’ starters played at least 30 minutes, with Ivan Harris playing the whole 40 minutes. The Boomers had just one player on court more than 30 minutes. Billy Feben top-scored for the Thoroughbreds with 21 points, while Ivan Harris had 20 points. The loss leaves the Thoroughbreds winless two rounds in, after suffering a big loss to Keilor in the opening game. They face an also winless Western Port Steelers on Sunday. It was a better day for the Thoroughbreds youth league men’s 2 side, which won its first game of the season against newcomers Wallan Panthers. Only one goal separated the two teams in the second quarter, before the more experienced Thoroughbreds upped the ante with a 21-7 quarter. The last was closer but the Thoroughbreds won 76-59. Milan Savic top-scored with 13 points, Liam Allison and Broden Collins hit double figures in a game where every player got on the scoreboard. Matt Cape was one of four players to score in the 40s for Darley. (Damian Visentini)

ROD’S VERDICT
was aware of the hard ride right up until I got into the driver’s seat and then, wow, you realise why. The handling is terrific. It sticks like glue and feels solid throughout. And the seating is nicely comfortable and excellently supportive to hold you firmly, no matter how high the cornering G-forces rise. There’s instant acceleration and power delivery that, while quite linear, comes on with a whoosh. There’s something compelling about having instant power, and bags of it. It put a smile on my face. The GTS brings leather seating as well as the navigation, sunroof and the EyeSight safety package, which includes blind spot warning and a rear cross-traffic alert among other things. The interior is well finished and nicely trimmed. There’s wood detail and red upholstery stitching throughout. Rear seats fold quickly and easily to give a flat cargo floor. OK, so maybe the ride is hard and there’s noticeable cabin noise, especially over rough surfaces, but in the end this is a practical wagon that drives like a sports car. Good fun.

f you’ve always wanted a WRX but you’ve never wanted to look like an adult masquerading as an 18-year-old, this is the car for you. There’s more room in the back seat too, and you’ll get a couple of suitcases behind that. But the family might not thank you for buying it. This is a very quick car with heaps of performance for the price. Once the turbo is spinning, the motor is responsive and fast, and it’s beautifully matched to a continuous variable gearbox with eight presets. Give it some gas and it sounds great too. And there’s handling to match; it sits square and solid through the bends with no shudder or skip. The cost is a hard and sharp ride. Officially this is Bilstein suspension, but your family will come up with other names when you encounter any road that’s not freeway smooth. The solution? The cheapest Levorg, the GT at $47,294, gets the same engine but softer springs. But if you’re into sporty driving, you won’t find anything at the price to touch the GTS.
