Painting a mental image
(Shawn Smits)
Julie Zapasa was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during her final year of university in 1994. She was studying an arts degree and was determined to complete it. The Melton South woman has been working as an artist since and says the “meditational qualities” of art has helped her realise her potential. “Art validates my state of mind by being a vehicle for self-expression,” Zapasa says. “It has … strengthened my sense of identity and has given me a lot of self-discipline. “It also connects me with other people who suffer mental health issues from all walks of life.” Zapasa has launched her latest exhibition, A Few Words on Elusive Soul, which showcases the “confronting” yet “peculiar sense of beauty” of the human spirit. Zapasa says she used Picasso-like distortions to paint Integration of Irene (pictured) to express her experiences with mental illness. Her paintings will be on display at SmartArt Gallery, 1/40 Smith Street, Melton until April 21. Sumeyya Ilanbey
Hume Drive fix funded Melton council has allocated $3 million to duplicate a notorious Taylors Hill road that has been plagued with “chronic traffic problems” as part of its 2017-18 draft budget. Hume Drive will be duplicated between Calder Park Drive and Overton Lea Boulevard, with construction expected to start in the next financial year. The Taylors Hill area was a big winner in the budget, with a further $10 million for the construction of sports ovals, pavilions and courts in the new Taylors Hill West suburb. As well, the council has put aside $3.67 million for a streetscape upgrade in Melton township as part of the Pride of Melton project and the construction of a bridge at Westwood
Drive over the Kororoit Creek, expected to cost $2 million. Melton council engineering services manager Charles Cornish said the Hume Drive roadworks would be funded by Melton and Brimbank councils, with the latter responsible for funding the duplication between Overton Lea Boulevard and the existing duplicated road about 200 metres to the east. The duplication will be one of dozens of Melton infrastructure works budgeted for the next financial year, with the council announcing it will spend $52 million on its capital works program. Melton council has also budgeted $500,000 to upgrade female changerooms across the municipality and $1.085 million to replace footpaths not in ideal condition. The council
will spend $100,000 on a roundabout at the southern entrance of City Vista Drive, Plumpton. Rate rises will be capped at two per cent this year in line with the state government-imposed limit, with the council expected to take in $104 million in rates – up 5.78 per cent from the previous year. The council says it will raise $7.65 million in municipal charges, up 6.6 per cent from the previous year. Pensioners will be eligible for a $70 rebate on their rates. “Despite the rate-capping restriction, the council is in a good financial position largely due to containing cost increases,” a report presented at last week’s council meeting states. “In addition, the council has also been successful in attracting state and federal
funding from the Interface Growth Fund and the Roads to Recovery Fund. “The favourable financial position has resulted in council being able to deliver capital works of $52.1 million and loan repayments of $3.4 million, without additional borrowing.” In its 2017-18 capital works program, Melton council will spend $19 million on leisure and community facilities, $15.7 million on road infrastructure, $5.4 million on community buildings, $4.6 million on bridge works, $1.3 million for footpaths and bike paths and $4.1 million for a range of other projects. The draft budget is out for public consultation until May 3. The final budget is to be adopted at the June council meeting. Mayor defends tea costs MARCH 14, 2017 \ STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey has defended spending $18,500 on a high tea to celebrate International Women’s Day, saying she “couldn’t care” about social media comments blasting the cost of the event as “exorbitant”. The council came under fire last month after it was revealed about $20,000 of ratepayers’ money had been allocated for the two-hour, invite-only event. At the time, Cr Lara Carli requested officers prepare a report outlining all costs. It can be revealed Melton council spent $10,311 on food and beverages, $4026 on venue “dressing”, $1125 on entertainment, $823 on printing and designing invitations and thank-you cards, and $615 on thank-you gifts. The Jaguars Melbourne futsal club was given a chance to flaunt its talent and showcase its home suburb of Caroline Springs at the Victorian championships last week. While missing out on a title – Jaguars’ under-12 boys team finished runners-up – club chairman Jack Dugongic said he was proud of the side. “This is the biggest thing on the futsal calendar in our state,” Mr Dugongic said. “It’s great for our kids to have something in their backyard – usually we have to travel to Canberra or Sydney. This is a great opportunity for us to showcase the club, the facilities – we’re pretty proud of Caroline Springs.” The championships were held at the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre.

Funds for park loos rejected There’ll be no public toilets for the many users of Burnside Heights’ Tenterfield Park, Melton council has decided. Cambridge ward councillor Steve Abboushi called for toilets at Tenterfield Park to be funded from this year’s budget, a move he said was supported by many community groups, as the closest public toilets are two kilometres away at Watervale shopping centre. But his motion was knocked back at last week’s council meeting, with one councillor saying funding toilets at Tenterfield Park could “open the floodgates” for requests for the same at other parks. The toilets could also attract “drug dealers”, the councillor suggested. “This initiative wasn’t put forward willy-nilly,” Cr Abboushi said. “It was put forward with due consideration, consultation with the community … followed by a post by me on Facebook to gauge some more responses on what [residents’] thoughts were. “There’s been a lot of thought that’s gone into this, and it’s been backed by community groups inside and outside of the municipality.” But fellow ward councillor Goran Kesic said the linear shape of the park meant it wouldn’t be able to accommodate public toilets, and he said some residents had complained about the suggestion. “[They said] they wouldn’t like the smell from the [toilets], they wouldn’t like different groups, perhaps drug dealers, coming,” Cr Kesic said.” Council officers estimated the cost of building the public toilets would be about $180,000, with annual cleaning and maintenance costs of $15,000. Council policy provides for public toilets only at “active recreation reserves”, such as Hannah Watts Park, Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve and Hillside Recreation Reserve. Tenterfield Park is considered a local park. Cr Lara Carli said, in the past, human faeces had been left on playground equipment at Tenterfield Park. “I’ve seen the comments residents are saying ‘yes please, we need some toilets there’ … [This park] is heavily utilised.” Councillors Ken Hardy, Goran Kesic, Bob Turner and Sophie Ramsey voted against the motion. Cr Ramsey used her mayoral casting vote to knock it back. Councillors Kathy Majdlik, Steve Abboushi, Melissa De Santis and Lara Carli voted in favour. Cr Michelle Mendes was absent. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Development funds lay idle By Sumeyya Ilanbey The state government has reaped in more than $43 million from developers in Melton but has spent less than 3 per cent of that money on vital infrastructure projects in the municipality. As part of the requirements of Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC), which is a tax on newly developed land in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, state governments must spend the money on key infrastructure projects, such as schools, hospitals and public transport. But a recent Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning report has revealed
of the $43 million Melton is eligible for from GAIC funding, the state government has only allocated $6.5 million for projects. So far, only $588,640 has been spent on traffic signals at the Ferris Road interchange. The state government allocated $1.5 million for this project, and $5 million for an ambulatory care centre. Melton council chief executive Kel Tori said the council had been advocating for a number of projects to be considered for funding and had identified a list of priorities including the Toolern rail station, a primary school at Eynesbury and a pedestrian crossing over the
Western Freeway at Woodgrove Shopping Centre. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime pool of money for the municipality and we encourage the government to invest the money in projects council has identified for the betterment of the community,” Mr Tori said. Opposition planning spokesman David Davis has accused the state government of “burying massive treasure”. “Daniel Andrews is hoarding cash that was promised to outer suburban communities heaving under massive population growth,” Mr Davis said.
“There is money available to relieve pressure on suburban families but Daniel Andrews is refusing to help.” A state government spokesman hit back saying there was often a lag between planning the project and releasing the money. He accused the former Liberal government of “making little use” of GAIC funding. “Under the Liberals, GAIC funding was confusing and difficult to access, so we’ve set up a clear process to consider GAIC proposals,” he said. “The Liberals barely touched GAIC because they barely built a thing.”
Lake refill is slow going A Caroline Springs lake that was drained as part of a police investigation into alleged interference with air traffic controls at Melbourne airports could take years to refill. In early January, Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and the SES drained Spring Lake as part of an investigation into a series of hoax calls to pilots and air traffic control staff between September and November last year. Melbourne Water’s acting manager of waterways and land west Ben English said the “complex” task of refilling the lake had begun, but the process would mostly rely on rainwater harvested from Serpentine Lake, or “Lake Logan” after heavy rainfalls. It’s estimated it will require about 20 mega-litres of water to return the lake to pre-January levels. Melbourne Water is also in the process of making operational again an underwater
bore used to originally fill the lake for use as a secondary water source. “The first step of the management plan – storm water harvesting from the Serpentine Lake – is occurring any time there is a significant rain event,” Mr English said. “The refill process will be undertaken over time in order to balance the water chemistry required to support plants and animals.” One Lakeway Close resident, who did not want to be named, said the lake looked like a quarry. “This is a family area with million-dollar homes,” she said. “All the ducks have gone and we’ve now got a tip in our front yard.” Melbourne Water has acknowledged the impact draining the lake has had on the local community and has thanked residents for their patience while it is restored. A shout-out to inspire Sherry-Rose Watts doesn’t see herself on television, in magazines, on company boards or in political circles. It’s this chronic under-representation of young, black, African women in mainstream Australia that prompted the 20-year-old to speak out. Ms Watts, a Caroline Springs resident, is a public speaker with Shout Out Victoria and is keen to share her experiences and perspective on multiculturalism, diversity and gender equality. She says she hopes to inspire, and empower, young African women.
“I’m a black, African young woman – we’re highly under-represented in every facet of society,” Ms Watts says. “That’s something that has always stayed with me. Representation is a hugely important issue for me … it’s one of those things if you don’t have the experience of not being normal, you won’t understand what it means when someone says they don’t feel like they belong.” Ms Watts said she was passionate about making her community a better place to live – not just for herself but for everybody else. Melton councillors have voted against hosting three more council meetings in the municipality’s eastern corridor. Cambridge ward councillor Steve Abboushi put forth a motion, requesting the June, September and December council meetings be held at the Taylors Hill Community Centre. His motion was defeated when councillors Goran Kesic, Ken Hardy, Sophie Ramsey, Michelle Mendes and Bob Turner voted against it. Councillors agreed to hold the June meeting at Taylors Hill.

Murder case re-opened
Fines issued for council poll no-show

By Nick McKenzie, Nino Bucci, The Age Several weeks before his body was discovered off a bush track near Gisborne in the summer of 1984, Bernie Williams had told his mother he was “in big trouble”. When Pauline Williams asked her son if she could help, he said: “No … it’s something I have to do for myself.” Williams, a strapping 25-year-old ruckman from Melton, was a man with a big reputation in a small town where the football club was a social hub. This reputation extended beyond football to his interest in the girlfriends and wives of other men … in the parlance of the times, Williams was a ladies’ man. It meant that police had several obvious suspects – too many to ensure an easy arrest. Williams was the doting father of a three-year-old daughter. He was married to the girl’s mother, but they were separated. They remained on good terms. He was a strapping ruckman who had been expected to captain the Melton Football Club that season. He was one of the most talented and feared players in Riddell Football League. Shortly before his death, Williams was led by his killer to a scrubby patch of bushland. Evidence suggests that he knew he wasn’t coming home. It appears his hands may have been bound as he was walked towards the site of his execution. A pistol was used to kill him. Five days later, his body was found hunched over, about 20 metres from Hobbs Road in Bullengarook. A $50,000 reward was posted, but did not yield a conviction. Now, over three decades later, police are offering a much bigger sum – $1 million – in the hope it will encourage new
information to emerge. It is one of several cold cases the police are reopening. There are several suspects. One witness told police about a man he saw talking to Williams, and how it was unusual the man had greeted Williams as Bernard, not Bernie. Williams worked as a plumber for his older brother, Mick.
NEWS
It was Mick who had to identify the body. Today, the mystery of who killed his brother still perplexes Mick. “For 32 years, it’s gone nowhere,” Mick Williams said. “Obviously nothing is going to bring him back, but with all the suspicions and everything, we just want to make some sense of it all.”
More than 13,000 Melton and Moorabool residents have been slapped with fines for not voting in last year’s council elections. The Victorian Electoral Commission has sent 11,308 infringement notices to Melton residents and 2187 to Moorabool residents for not casting their votes by the due date. The VEC sent “apparent failure to vote” notices earlier this year asking why residents hadn’t voted in the October council elections. A commission spokesman said $78 infringement notices were subsequently mailed out to those who didn’t respond to the initial notice or who provided invalid responses. “There are a number of options for responding to the infringement notice,” the spokesman said. “You can pay the attached fine; request an internal review if you believe it was wrongly issued or if you have exceptional circumstances; or have the matter heard in court. “It is important to take action in relation to the infringement notice or the matter will become more serious.” More than 15,400 Brimbank residents, 6000 Hobsons Bay residents and 15,300 Wyndham residents received infringement notices. Residents wanting to request a review of their fines should visit vec.vic.gov.au/ voting/fines/internalreviews. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Each time John Garang Kon scrolls through Facebook or turns on the TV, he feels like he’s bombarded with anti-South Sudanese sentiment. When reports of youth crime and racist posts escalated, Mr Kon decided he needed to take action and he set up the Melton South Sudanese Community. Since the group’s inception, Mr Kon has engaged with local youth, set up homework and sports clubs and hosted barbecues at local parks. The group’s newest initiative is Harmony Walk – a group of 11 volunteers visit the Woodgrove Shopping Centre three days a week to engage with South Sudanese youth and
encourage them to attend clubs and barbecues. “We are all Australian and we need to exist together,” Mr Kon said of the group’s purpose. “We must work altogether … to create peace.” Mr Kon said when the group started patrolling the shopping centre, they were met with indifference but there’s been a big shift in young people’s attitudes towards the volunteers. “Sometimes with the young ones, if they’re disengaged or not knowing what to do, we try to give them hope and direction in terms of identifying their skills and trying to motivate them,” Mr Kon says. NEWS
Tip growth opponents dig in By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton council and Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz have ramped up their opposition to the expansion of the Ravenhall landfill. The Environment Protection Authority last month announced it had granted waste management giant Cleanaway a works approval to expand the landfill, albeit on a much smaller scale than requested. The company and residents are awaiting a decision by Planning Minister Richard Wynne on whether to grant a planning permit.
Melton and Brimbank residents last month expressed outrage at the EPA, saying the environment watchdog had “let the west down”. In a letter to the Stop the Tip committee, Ms Kairouz said she was “extremely disappointed” with EPA’s decision and had been making “strong representations” to Premier Daniel Andrews, Mr Wynne and Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio. “I have made it clear … that the EPA has ignored its own guidelines,” Ms Kairouz said. “By allowing the expansion of the tip
and externalised buffers, we risk Cleanaway polluting our community. “It also ignores the Ombudsman’s recommendation, which clearly state the buffers must be internalised on the polluter’s land.” At last week’s council meeting, councillors voted in favour of writing to the state government and the state opposition “reiterating” its objection to the landfill expansion. Council officers said the council had opposed the initial application on a “range of amenity
grounds and the inconsistencies of long-term landfilling resources”. The EPA’s works approval for the landfill expansion limits the number of landfill cells to seven on the southern end (Cleanaway had applied for 16 new cells in the north and south); grants landfill area of 96 hectares, with 23 million cubic metres of airspace (the original application requested a landfill area of 210 hectares, with 53 million cubic metres of airspace); and has limited the tip’s lifespan to 13 years (Cleanaway had requested 30).
Police target rural roads Extra police will be out on some of Melton’s highest risk rural roads as the highway patrol increases its efforts to target speeding drivers and lower the road toll. As part of the TAC-funded Operation Hare, police will target Hopkins Road in Truganina, Melton Highway in Plumpton, Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road in Toolern Vale, Gisborne-Melton Road in Toolern Vale and Vineyard Road in Diggers Rest. Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier said there had been high levels of road trauma along those roads. While speed hasn’t been the only factor, Sergeant Stuhldreier said rural roads continued to be over represented in crash statistics. “People tend to get easily distracted on rural roads, they run off the roads, there are intersecting roads [that they don’t stop at] … there are animals, the weather and that combined with speed, the results aren’t good.”
TAC road safety director Samantha Cockfield said although those roads had been identified as high risk, they’re not the only roads police will be targeting. “No one deserves to die or be seriously hurt on the roads, so we’re urging everyone to think about the choices they make every time they get behind the wheel,” Ms Cockfield said. Speed accounts for about a third of all road deaths and about one-in-five drivers killed have an illegal blood alcohol level, according to the TAC. In the five years to April 5, 2017, 27 people have been killed on Melton roads, with three deaths since the start of this year. “Plan your trip, make sure you’re not fatigued or affected by any substance, drive within your capabilities, but also within the speed zones,” Sergeant Stuhldreier said. Policing Enforcement Campaign Operation Nexus is a state-wide Police Road Policing Operation that forms part of the Easter campaign over the Easter holiday period. It aims to increase driver awareness and journey planning, while reducing road trauma during this high risk time. This 5 day Road Policing Enforcement Campaign will run from Thursday 13th April to Monday 17th April, 2017 Westgate Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Jason Templar said this operation will be conducted throughout all operational Police Regions and Police Service Areas during the five days, using all available personnel from local road policing units, general duties and other regional resources. Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to Road Policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma being Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Driver Distraction, Fatigue and Seatbelts. Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt and make sure you are well rested. Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired.
have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Easter Holiday weekend RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face.

DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS!
Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Nexus during the 2017 Easter Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000
Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways throughout the State.
Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road.
Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who
If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users.
Don’t make a Grave Mistake
Speed is the largest single factor in fatal road crashes on our roads. RoadSafe Westgate and your local council support reporting speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers.

Melton growth outstrips state Melton is booming, with new figures showing the municipality’s population climbed by more than 4.5 per cent in a year – double the state growth rate. More than 138,000 people called Melton home at the end of the past financial year, up from 132,000 the year before. Outer growth suburbs had the largest growth, with South Morang, Cranbourne East, Craigieburn and Point Cook among the fastest growing suburbs in the country, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics latest Regional Population Growth report. The state opposition has accused the government of not being able to manage the “tsunami of people” calling Victoria home, spruiking its Population Policy Taskforce which is expected to release its interim findings in the coming months. The opposition’s population policy spokesman Tim Smith said managing the booming population was “critically important” for outer growth suburbs, including Melton. “It is vital that Victoria decentralises its population to ensure that we become a state of cities, not a city-state, to take the pressure off Melbourne and grow regional Victoria,” Mr Smith said. “That is why [the Coalition] is working hard to plan for our growing population with a comprehensive strategy of more roads, public transport, schools, police and hospitals, especially in growth areas like the western suburbs.”
But government spokesman Jordy Jeffrey-Bailey said the government had invested millions of dollars on vital infrastructure projects in the Melton municipality, including $600,000 on road resurfacing and maintenance works across Melton. Mr Jeffrey-Bailey said last year’s budget included $12 million to build stage one of the Taylors Hill West Secondary College, $5.4 million to upgrade the Melton Specialist School, and money to buy a site for a primary school in Burnside.

“Whether it’s building a brand new community health hub, expanding and refurbishing the surgical and maternity services at Djerriwarrh Health Services, or building new ambulance stations in Melton and Bacchus Marsh – we’re investing to ensure we can continue to meet the health care needs of the Melton community, now and into the future,” he said. “We’re duplicating the Ballarat railway line to Melton, which will provide space for more trains, more often and the Metro Tunnel will also pave the way for electrification and the creation of a dedicated Melton metro line through Melbourne’s west.” The National Growth Areas Alliance was contacted for comment.

MY PLACE Ian Ireland is a familiar face around Ballan. He’s been running the newsagency for the past three decades and volunteers with the Country Fire Authority. He speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey. What’s your connection to Moorabool? I’ve been a Ballan resident for about 34 years and a business owner for the last 29 years. What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool? The community, the lifestyle … all the positive points of a small community that rally behind each other when something goes wrong. The biggest thing that has hit Ballan was the closure of the Fiskville [CFA training centre] and it devastated the community … but everyone’s banded together to pull through. A lot are still struggling, but we hope the government will come to their aid and build a new complex if they can’t remediate what’s there at the moment.
Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool? I like the peace and quiet of the bush. I’m open to all the parks we have – I like just being able to look at the horizon without any infrastructure.
starweekly.com.au
Why did you decide to volunteer with the CFA? It’s part of the community. To get to know people, to be involved and to help protect our own community.
(Shawn Smits)
What would you change about the area if you could? We have so much open space, why do we persist on building dual dwellings on a single block of land? I don’t mind small units, but what I’m talking about is splitting a block of land and putting a house behind another house.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Just being able to help people – especially in times of a crisis – and being able to reassure people. When I was volunteering with the ambulance services, I helped deliver a baby – it was great. [Six years ago] we were also involved in the rescue of a 15-year-old boy … who came off his bike in floodwaters and got stuck in a drain.
How has the closure of the Fiskville training facility impacted the community? The centre was providing work for not only people who are employed by the CFA, but also the tradespeople, the shops in Ballan. Economically, I don’t believe Ballan will ever recover – we’re not attracting any new large businesses.

39 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 11, 2017
SPORT Burras swoop in for early feast, leaving Bombers trailing Diggers Rest put on a strong first-up performance against a new-look Riddell team to start the Riddell District Netball League A-grade season. Facing last year’s premiers, the Burras didn’t know what the Bombers line-up was like, but anticipated a tough match. The Burras got the jump early to lead the Bombers by six goals at quarter-time. That lead was extended to 10 goals at the main break, pushed to 12 goals at three-quarter time, and was 14 goals at the final whistle, with the Burras winning 47-33. Burras’ playing coach Amy Carroll said she knew the Bombers had made some major changes in the off season, but said she had focused on her own side. Carroll was the best of the goalers on court, shooting 27. “Riddell is a very different team, but still a good team,” she said.
“It was good to have a good match-up against them. We were focused on doing what we needed to do to get the win. “We had a few practice matches and we got better in each of the those games, and improved again on Saturday.” The Burras have a similar line-up to last season, but have added three players for further depth. Carroll said she is confident in every line-up they put on the court and is hoping to improve on their sixth place of last season. Every player got court time on Saturday. Former Australian Diamond Natasha Chokjlat heads the inclusions, while former Romsey midcourter Toni Lind returns to the competition. “We’re so much further ahead than last season,” Carroll said. “We needed to add a couple more players, and we’re happy to have expectations on us this season, with the team really coming together.
“Alicija [Marko Rawlings] did really well last year in B-grade, so we brought her up. Tash is happy to play every week and really enjoying it. “We were lucky Toni had a few friends in the team … I played with her [at City West Falcons]; she’s a great player to add in. “We’ve got 10 really good players who can take the court.” Carroll said she was also confident in the Burras’ other three sides, which get stronger every year. For the Bombers, Jessica Lallo and Chloe Meulenmeesters shot 12 goals each. In other matches, Romsey was too strong for Rupertswood, Lancefield had a big win against Woodend-Hesket, while Macedon won in wet conditions against Sunbury Kangaroos. Melton Centrals was awarded the win against Rockbank, with the game called off just after half-time due to lightning. Tara Murray
Burras tight and right By Tara Murray The Riddell District Football League grand final rematch was no thriller, with Diggers Rest again proving too strong for Riddell. Both sides fielded very different line-ups from those of last season’s decider, won by Diggers Rest in extra time. On Saturday the Burras led by 21 points at quarter-time. Both sides scored 1.1 in a more even second quarter, but four goals to none in the third, opened up the Burras’ lead to 44 points. Heavy rain and strong winds wreaked havoc in the final quarter. Neither side could do much with the ball in poor visibility and the lights needed to be turned on. The Burras held strong in the terrible conditions, kicking 4.8 while keeping the Bombers scoreless for a 14.13 (97)-3.3 (21) win. Burras coach Shaun Sims was full of praise for his side’s defenders in holding the Bombers to just three goals. “It’s always best to start the year with a win,” he said. “After the five-minute mark of the second quarter, we kept them goalless – to keep an expected top side to that score at our ground was a really good effort.” Jamie Lobb kicked three goals for the Burras with Chris Lawton, Mark Freeth and Matthew Krul kicking two each. Sims said Lobb, Cale Morton and Krul were the three standouts with not many players playing well for all four quarters. He said Krul was exceptional playing up forward and in the midfield instead of his usual defensive role. For the Bombers, the Treweeks, Stephen and Michael, along with Scott Walsh, were the side’s best. Sims said his side still had a lot of room for improvement and would benefit from another two weeks on the track before its next game. For their next match, the Burras will travel to take on Woodend-Hesket on April 22. Sims said the Burras had a new look about them this year. “There was seven or eight guys who were not part of the grand final side,” he said of the side that beat Riddell. “We brought in three or four from under-18s and a couple of other guys who have been performing strongly. “It’s the youngest team we’ve had in about five years. Those who got their opportunities were exceptional.” Sims said he expected four or five players would return to the side in the next couple of rounds. In other matches, Macedon had a big win 40 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 11, 2017

Melton Swimming Club again showed why it’s the number one club in the Western Metropolitan District. Competing at the 2017 Metro All Junior Competition, Melton came home with eight medals. Karlos Nuestro won a gold and silver medal, Alisha Walters took home a gold and bronze medal, Thomas Sutherland won two bronze medals, while Noah O’Donnell won a silver medal and Haryanna San Miguel a bronze. Overall, 35 athletes competed, with 15 swimmers making finals.

Hillside couldn’t have asked for a better start to its Essendon District Football League division 1 season. Facing Hadfield, the Sharks dominated from the opening bounce, a move that was reflected on the scoreboard. The Sharks kicked 10 first-quarter goals to lead by 51 points at the first break. The goals continued in the next three quarters, with the Sharks winning 31.24 (210)-7.5 (47). Victor Micallef kicked six goals, while Jackson Volpato and Brandon Coletta kicked four each. Meanwhile, Burnside Heights went down 22.15 (147)-10.6 (66) to Roxburgh Park.
Basketball
Melton Thoroughbreds remain without a win after four rounds of the Big V men’s division 1 season. On Saturday night against Shepparton Gators, the Thoroughbreds were left to rue a poor second quarter. They won the other three, but couldn’t overcome the 29-8 second quarter result in their 81-73 loss. Captain Jason Todorov top-scored for the Thoroughbreds with 24 points.
Soccer
Melton Phoenix suffered a 3-0 loss to Point Cook in FFV state league 4 west on Saturday. It was a scoreless first half, with Point Cook left to rue some missed opportunities. But this wasn’t the case in the second half, when they scored three goals to get the win. In state league 5 west, Spring Hills had a 1-1 draw with Deakin Ducks. Diggers Rest’s Cale Morton tries to break free of Riddell’s Scott Walsh and Ollie Messaoudi. (Shawn Smits)

Melton South’s veteran cracks 400
Matthew Collins became the first player to play 400 games for Melton South. (Shawn Smits)
Matthew Collins may have become the first player to play 400 games for the Melton South Football Club on Saturday but he, like everyone else, was more excited to see the new-look senior side. Collins, who is already the club’s games record holder, stepped out for the Panthers in their reserves win against Melton and then watched on as the Panthers seniors, led by star recruit Brendan Fevola, won their first match since 2015. “I don’t know how I feel about playing 400 games,” Collins, known as ‘Zippy’, said before the game. “I’m more excited for the upcoming season for the club. “There was a lot of excitement when the club won the 1994 senior premiership, which was my first year out of under-18s. It was exciting around the finals as we knew something special
could happen, but I’ve never seen a build-up to a season like this before.” The first of Collins’ 400 games came in 1994, but he wasn’t able to break into the premiership side. He said most of his games had come in the reserves, including the 2002 and 2005 premierships. He also led the league reserves goalkicking and won several club reserves best and fairest awards. His involvement at the Panthers started well before 1994. “It feels like I’ve been here forever,” he said. “I’ve played at the club since I was five. I’m not sure how many games I’ve played overall, but it would be a big number.” Collins said this year will be his last season pulling on the jumper – but he also said that when he broke the club’s games record of 370, held by Tommy Weaver, in 2015.
“We were battling for numbers a bit the last couple of years so I kept playing,” Collins said. “I never really thought about playing 400 games and I wasn’t going to play on this year.” Collins finished last season with 399 games under his belt. “Everyone said you can’t give it away just one game from 400. I decided if I was going to play one game I needed to do a pre season as I would have struggled to get a kick. “[But] I wasn’t going to do a pre season for just one match.” He has one main wish for the reserves this season. “I would like to finish up at the club on a winning note. The last four seasons we haven’t had a good win-loss record. “I’d like to win some more games this year.” Tara Murray
Panthers break drought By Tara Murray There was a sense of relief for the much-hyped Melton South team which returned to the winners ‘ list for the first time since July 2015. However, the Panthers didn’t have it all their own way in the Ballarat Football League opener, with cross-town rival Melton pushing them all the way. The first quarter was the Brendan Fevola show. The new co-coach didn’t disappoint in his first game, kicking all four of the Panthers goals for the quarter. Besides a goal to Mitch Banner, the second quarter belonged to the Bloods. Making the most of the wind, the Bloods kicked 5.2 to 1.2 to turn a nine-point deficit into a 15-point lead. If the second quarter left the Panthers coaches disappointed, at the last change the feeling had turned to frustration. With the wind picking up and rain falling, the Panthers wasted their third quarter dominance kicking with the wind. They kicked three goals for the term to take a three-point lead into the final break, but with another seven scoring shots they could have been further ahead. Melton’s Angus Grigg kicked the first goal of the last quarter, levelling the scores, before Joseph Callus put the Panthers back in front. Ben Sortino kicked the sealer with the Panthers winning 10.19 (79)-10.5 (65). With all the pressure and media hyple throughout the off season Fevola was relieved to get the win. “Heading into the first round we didn’t know how it was all going to work with all the new players in,” he said. “At half-time I thought we were in a bit of trouble. We gave the boys a bit of a cook at half-time and they really responded. “I pretty much said to them if we’re first to the ball we’ll get rewarded and in the last quarter the way the players threw their bodies at it was brilliant.” Fevola said the most disappointing aspect in the first half was the lack of run and spread, with the onballers only running one way. Co-coach Sean Triplett said the hype and expectation for the game had played a role in what the coaches thought was a disappointing performance. “Without a doubt the players played the game in their heads all week and they felt it,” he said. “They haven’t won [the last couple of years] and when they don’t win it’s like a disease going through you. “The monkey is off the back.” While happy to get the first-up win, Triplett said there was a lot of room for improvement. “We had 29 scoring shots at goal. Our process was terrible and I thought our skill was terrible … but we still found a way to win. “That tells me we’re a pretty good side but it was very frustrating.” Fevola finished the game with five goals. Triplett said they didn’t make the most of his

dominance early in the game. Sortino was best on ground, while Nick Kommer was busy in the middle. The coaches singled out the courage of Ben Sullivan in the final quarter. For the Bloods, Ben Archard kicked three goals in his debut for the club, while Jack Walker was their best.
Triplett said they were still another two to three players away from their best side. Matt Notman, who has finally received a clearance for Melton, is one of those. As part of the clearance agreement, Notman wasn’t to play against his old side. It doesn’t get any easier for the Panthers who face Sunbury Lions on Good Friday.
It was smiles all round for Melton South netballers, with all five teams kick-starting the season with wins against local rivals Melton on Saturday. The A-grade girls fought out a thriller to return to the winners’ list – the first time since 2015. While much had been made about the losing streak of Panthers’ senior footballers, the A-grade netballers’ drought had been going a week longer. The Panthers’ last A-grade win came on July 18, 2015, when then Melbourne Vixens shooter Karyn Bailey helped them beat Melton. On Saturday, the Panthers had to do it the hard way, coming from behind in the second half to win 34-33. The Bloods led by as many as six goals in the third quarter, as both teams struggled in the windy conditions. The Panthers reduced the margin to one goal at the last break and managed to get the early ascendency in the final quarter to take the lead. Once in front, the Panthers stayed there. The Bloods cut the margin, but it was too little too late. Alexis Climas was named the Panthers best, shooting 16 goals in three quarters on court. The attacking end will get stronger, after star recruit Bec Colwell missed the game. Bloods’ playing coach Katie Kakoschke was named her side’s best for her work in defence. Jess Bartlett, playing in an unfamiliar position in goal, shot 17 goals. The Panthers face Sunbury Lions on Friday, while the Bloods face the Lions on April 22. ROD’S VERDICT
es, the Baleno is cheap but it’s certainly not nasty; the more you drive it, the more endearing it becomes. Use the gears and the performance is willing and eager, and using the gears is easy with a light, fast shift and an easy clutch, all making the car fun. I was impressed by the seating, comfortable and supportive in front and there’s surprising legroom in the rear given the compact external dimensions. However, the seating back there is a flat bench that I suspect will get tedious pretty fast. What most impressed me was the inclusion of navigation, making the Baleno a standout bargain in terms of equipment. The touch controls of the radio, though, are clumsy and the sound quality isn’t great. The interior reflects the bargain price but the fit and finish is good. You’ll notice the rise in cabin noise as you hit 80km/h and by 110 it’s enough to drown out the radio. But it’s built for the city and in this environment it’s quick, fun and dead easy to park, made easier by a generous back-up camera.
(iStock)
uzukis have one extremely endearing quality – they’re great value. Late last year there was a new Vitara that set the benchmark for small SUVs and now the new Baleno is doing the same for small cars. For $17k you get a bright, perky engine, an easy and fast manual gearbox and a lot of good stuff in the cabin, including Bluetooth, auto headlights, cruise and, yep, satellite navigation. It has a usable rear seat and a deep and practical boot. OK, it’s a bit noisy at cruising speed and driving at more than 110km/h requires concentration. It’s also susceptible to cross winds and, like most small, light cars it rides pretty hard. But the handling is acceptable and will improve with better tyres, the motor is willing and acceleration is more than adequate. And the fuel economy is terrific – by our figures you’ll get more than 500 kilometres from the 37-litre tank. As city runabouts go, it’s the best you’re likely to find. The nice bonus is it looks like it costs more than it does.
