Mini train out of steam New Gisborne’s miniature trains come off the rails next month, hit by high insurance premiums and the demands of volunteer life on busy families. Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society vice-president Tim Reid has run the trains as part of a children’s party business from the society’s Calder Freeway grounds for the past six years. Mr Reid said the past six years have been a great adventure, but high costs and time pressures have forced him out. “When I joined the Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society, I set out to restore the train line, and enable children and families to enjoy the miniature train park,” Mr Reid said. “It’s been a wonderful ride, with lots of birthday cakes, parties and kids having fun. “Many families have enjoyed their celebrations at the park but sadly, due to time pressures, having a young family myself, we’ve had to make the hard decision to close. “Our hand was also forced by very high insurance rates, making it prohibitive,” he said. Locals have one last chance to bid the trains bon route on May 21 at the 2017 steam rally.

Council, EPA clash on tip By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton residents deserve better than a “stinky dumping ground” in the municipality, according to councillors. And they’re prepared to take on the environment watchdog in their fight against Ravenhall landfill’s bid to expand. At a special council meeting last Tuesday, councillors disregarded an officer’s recommendation and unanimously voted to appeal the Environment Protection Authority’s works approval for Cleanaway to expand the tip. It’s estimated an appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal would cost
between $15,000-$30,000, plus costs of expert witnesses, based on a four-five day hearing. Costs thereafter could be $15,000 per week. Officers warned, if the council was unsuccessful in its appeal, costs in the vicinity of $100,000 could be awarded against it. “There are also potentially reputational risks in challenging the decision of a public body, in circumstances where the decision has been taken after a lengthy and technical hearing of the matter,” the officers’ report stated. But councillors said they had been elected by residents to stand up for them and support them “in their greatest time of need”. Cambridge ward councillor Kathy Majdlik From $

said while appealing the decision might seem costly, “in the grand scheme of things” it wasn’t a significant expense, given the many years before the permit would expire. “Melton … deserves better than to have a stinky, dumping ground within our parameters,” Cr Majdlik said. “In our current council plan, it states Melton council will manage our growth, have a clear vision to connect and develop a sustainable city, as well as strategically plan for a well-designed city – this does not include being a dumping ground for the whole of metropolitan Melbourne.” Stop The Tip president Marion Martin has called on Premier Daniel Andrews and
Planning Minister Richard Wynne to heed residents’ concerns and support them in their fight against the tip’s expansion. “[Tonight’s decision] means councillors do care about the residents and the community,” Ms Martin said. “Now it’s the state government that need to have a good, hard look at themselves.” Council lawyers have provided written legal advice about appealing the EPA decision. But this advice will not be made public to ensure legal professional privilege is maintained, officers said. Brimbank council is expected to discuss also appealing the EPA’s decision on the landfill at it’s meeting tonight. From $

Opposition in new push on Nardella over taxes The State Revenue Office has been asked to investigate whether Melton MP Don Nardella has paid appropriate taxes on his properties. State opposition treasury spokesman Michael O’Brien has written to the State Revenue Commissioner Paul Broderick asking him to investigate the former deputy speaker. The opposition says it wants the office to investigate whether Mr Nardella had been paying land tax on properties in Melton West, Melton, Kurunjang and St Kilda while telling Parliament he had a different primary residence.
Mr Nardella has been under intense scrutiny for claiming $175,000 in second residence allowances designed for regional MPs. He was ousted from his deputy speaker role and forced to resign from the parliamentary Labor Party for refusing to pay back the money. A probe by parliamentary auditors PricewaterhouseCoopers found Mr Nardella was paying $200 a fortnight to a family member to live in an Ocean Grove caravan park. The auditors described Mr Nardella’s living arrangements as “non-prudent, non-arm’s length, potentially non-commercial (low
“rent”), and arguably opportunistic, designed to ensure continued enjoyment of the second residence allowance”. “The member already had a second residence in Melbourne so that, at the time, a simpler option might have been to relocate to the second residence in Melbourne or his Melton constituency,” the auditor’s report stated. In his letter to the State Revenue Commissioner, Mr O’Brien said it was important “for the integrity of Victoria’s taxation system” that only “properly founded exemptions” for land tax were claimed.
Team Diana digs deep
“In the event that the Member for Melton claimed any of the properties that he owned as his principal place of residence to the SRO for the purpose of claiming a land tax exemption, this would appear to contradict the findings of the PwC report, which found that Mr Nardella’s [principal place of residence] were not owned by him,” Mr O’Brien said in his letter. There have been calls for Mr Nardella to be investigated by Victoria Police, the Australian Electoral Commission and the Victorian Electoral Commission. Sumeyya Ilanbey
Appeal denied in fatal case
By Ewen McRae
A man who argued that three-and-a-half years’ jail for his role in a fatal crash at Melton was manifestly excessive has had his application to appeal refused. David Smith was killed when his car collided with a car driven by James Carroll at the intersection of Coburns and Barries roads in October, 2014. During a sentencing hearing in December, the court heard Carroll was travelling 27 km/h above the speed limit at the time of the collision in an attempt to get away from another driver he had been seen arguing with moments prior. In sentencing Carroll, Judge Christopher Ryan said while he accepted Carroll’s fear was “based in fact”, the actual threat he had received “was not the kind he perceived”. Carroll applied to the Supreme Court to appeal his sentence, arguing it was “manifestly excessive” given the mitigating circumstances. In his application, Carroll said Judge Ryan “erred in his assessment of the objective gravity … failed to give sufficient weight to [Carroll’s] reduced moral culpability … erred in his assessment of his prospects of rehabilitation, and placed too much weight on his history of drug abuse and criminal record”. Supreme Court Judge Joseph Santamaria dismissed the application, saying describing a sentence as manifestly excessive was a “stringent ground which is difficult to make good”. He said the sentencing judge took into account Carroll’s fear, the circumstances of the offending, and merely gave a “straightforward” account of Carroll’s drug and alcohol use. Carroll will be eligible for parole in two years.
Diana Karupovic is a fighter – but right now she needs all the help she can get. The 15-year-old Kings Park Copperfield College student has been diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma multiform brain cancer and her friends and family are raising money for a life-saving operation. From age 11, Diana had regular visits to hospital in a bid to explain a series of fainting episodes, but doctors could not find a clear diagnosis. Fifteen months ago, they discovered a 4.5-centimetre tumour on her brain. “I was a pretty normal kid before, pretty chilled, played XBox,” Diana said. “It came as a bit of a shock.” Diana had an operation to remove about 80 per cent of the tumour, followed by six weeks of radiotherapy. She progressed well for more than a year, until recently. “She had an MRI every three months since the operation, and they were all fine, but just before the last one in March she started to feel unwell again,” her mum, Beba said. “She couldn’t walk properly, she had low blood pressure and double vision … that scan in March showed that it [the cancer] had come back and spread.” The scan showed the tumour had grown and spread to Diana’s spine. The family has turned to Sydney surgeon, Dr Charlie Teo, for specialist care. But surgery will cost up to $100,000. Friends and family have set up a Go Fund Me page and are asking the public for donations. “The support has been amazing,” Beba said. “All our friends and family are spreading the word – they’re doing everything they possibly can, which has been incredible.” So far a quarter of the target money has been raised. Donations can be made at www.gofundme. com/29hvhxp8.

Wall plan to stop noise pollution By Sumeyya Ilanbey Planning for the long-awaited Westwood Drive extension and bridge is well under way, but Melton council still needs feedback on the design of a kilometre-long noise wall. Acoustic engineers have recommended noise barriers along the new section of the road to ensure the area complies with VicRoads’ noise limits. Designs for the walls have been drafted, and Melton council’s engineering services manager Charles Cornish said residents who live nearby
have been asked for input and their opinions on four separate proposals: • A 310-metre long, 2.4-metre high continuous wall along the eastern side of the Kororoit Creek; • A 300-metre long, 2.8-metre high non-continuous wall (for pedestrian access) along the western side of the Kororoit Creek; • A 180-metre long, 1.8-metre high continuous wall near Arbour Boulevard; and • A 90-metre long, 2.1-metre high continuous wall on the southern end of Kororoit Creek. Mr Cornish said there was no need to acquire
land for the walls as they would be located within the existing road reserve. The Westwood Drive extension and bridge over Kororoit Creek are an integral part of the Palmers Road corridor project, which will eventually be developed as a 16-kilometre, six-lane road connecting the Calder and Western freeways. The project is expected to significantly ease pressure on Caroline Springs Boulevard and Gourlay Road. Melton council has also allocated $2 million to build a bridge at Westwood Drive over
Kororoit creek in its 2017-18 draft budget. Mr Cornish said the council is awaiting approval from the planning minister before advertising the project for tender in July. “If council can go to tender in July, the selected contractor will have site possession to start construction in September 2017,” Mr Cornish said. “Construction is expected to take 12 months.” Residents are invited to information sessions on the design of the noise walls on Thursday, April 20, 2-4pm and 6-8pm, at the Caroline Springs library. Details: 9747 7200.
Models get air time Model planes with three-metre wingspans, mini-gliders and helicopters will take to the skies later this month to perform a series of aerial acrobatics to rival the Avalon Air Show. On April 23, the Keilor and Districts Model Aircraft Society will throw open its doors to the public for its annual open day. Society president Shane Talbot says the not-so-pint-sized model aircraft are capable of performing more complex aerial tricks than their manned counterparts because there are no worries about passenger safety. “So they’re able to pull all sorts of stunts,” he says. About 40 members will fly their aircraft in front of about 100 spectators. The open day venue is opposite Keilor Public Golf Course, Sunday April 23, 10am until 3pm. Entry: $2. Alexandra Laskie

Briefs Feedback on road priorities
A Rockbank site that once housed a post-second world war communications depot has been transformed to commemorate Australian troops. Developers Woodlea last month unveiled the first stage of a 500-metre Walk of Honour that will mirror the famous Avenues of Honour in Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat, once its completed by Remembrance Day next year. There will be educational plaques – and an associated smartphone app – defining the walk, with the first stage zoned for Boer and World War I memorials. Woodlea project director Matthew Dean said the site would eventually commemorate all significant military conflicts in which Australia has been involved, including WWII, Vietnam and Afghanistan, with vacant space left at the end of the walk for future war efforts. “Through the involvement of the various Melton and Caroline Springs community groups, the Walk of Honour has been created to commemorate not only each conflict, but specific local stories of sacrifice,” Mr Dean said. “In collaboration with Melton council, we are aiming to connect with new generations of residents, to tell the stories of Australian heroes throughout history, and we are proud to be working with local schools to incorporate areas of the walk into school curriculums.” Local community groups – Melton Family History Group, Melton Historical Association, Caroline Springs RSL, Melton RSL and the Partners of Veterans Associations – have been involved in the creation of the Walk of Honour at Fields Street.
Moorabool council wants feedback on its draft road management plan. The plan sets out how the council intends to maintain its 1440 kilometres of sealed and unsealed roads. Repairing and replacing all damaged roads is estimated to cost more than $320 million. The plan is out for public comment until May 7. Details at: moorabool.vic.gov.au.
SES to the rescue
Victoria’s State Emergency Service responded to more than 40 calls for help in Melton and Moorabool after wild weather lashed the area on April 8-9. Most requests involved minor building damage, such as water leaking through ceilings, and trees fallen on roads. A house in Kurunjang was damaged when hit by lightning. No one was harmed.
Early years hub a winner
Moorabool council has been recognised for its stellar Darley early years hub and multi-purpose pavilion, winning an Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia award. The hub won the “best public works” category last month. Mayor David Edwards said he was delighted council had been recognised for its design of a facility that would also meet future needs.

‘High risk’ offender released By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Kurunjang man who stabbed a teenager at Woodgrove Shopping Centre two years ago, in what was described as an “excessive” act of self-defence, has been released on a community corrections order despite being assessed as a “high risk” of re-offending. Athel Athel, 21, was found guilty last November of one count of theft and one count of affray following an incident on July 30, 2015. At sentencing last month, County Court Judge Rachelle Lewitan said that at the time of the offence, Athel was on four sets of bail for
offences he committed while on a 12-month good behaviour bond. She described Athel’s prospects of rehabilitation as “somewhat guarded”. “Community Correctional Services has assessed you as being at a high-risk of re-offending. Nevertheless, you are considered a suitable candidate for a community correction order,” she said. She sentenced Athel to a 12-month community corrections order, a $100 fine (for the theft charge) and 188 days detention he had already served. The County Court was told Athel was
walking along Coburns Road towards the shopping centre when he noticed a group of teenagers, with whom he was previously friends, in a white BMW. One of the teenagers, armed with a baseball bat, got out of the car and chased Athel for a “short distance” towards the shopping centre, but stopped when Athel crossed to the other side of the road. As the car drove past, Athel picked up a small rock and threw it towards the BMW. The court heard Athel had told police he stole a knife so he would have something to keep the teenagers at bay.
The judge said Athel and the three teenagers started fighting in the shopping centre carpark “in the middle of the afternoon with several civilian witnesses, including young children” nearby. Two of the teenagers swung baseball bats towards Athel, with one of the bats breaking on one of Athel’s arms. “You were fighting back,” Judge Lewitan said. “You used the knife to penetrate the back of the [victim’s] right thigh, causing [him] to fall to the ground.” The victim was taken to a nearby medical centre, where he was treated by paramedics and later transported to hospital.
Emmanuel Kubwange started his schooling in Rwanda, but because of the ongoing conflicts, was forced to relocate to a refugee camp in Tanzania. Then it was Malawi, then Mozambique, then Zimbabwe, before he finally settled in Australia seven years ago. One of the constants in Mr Kubwange’s life – and his most positive experience during time in refugee camps – was school. “One of the consistent, positive experiences was learning, experiencing success, being appreciated and being empowered by knowing that I am learning and improving,” Mr Kubwange says. Despite his education being profoundly disrupted, when Mr Kubwange arrived in Australia at 19, he graduated from year 12 with an ATAR of 97, then studied a bachelor of commerce and science before completing a
masters of education two years ago. The Melton Secondary College teacher says he wants to inspire and motivate young people. “I’m a product of every disadvantage you can imagine – I’ve been a refugee, a migrant, in every [low] socio-economic situation you can imagine … when my family came to Australia, we had to start from zero – from nothing, to going to school, going to university. “Just because you’re identifying as someone from a lower socio-economic background, doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance.” Mr Kubwange’s story will be aired in a three-part SBS documentary on Wednesday nights. Testing Teachers follows six first-time teachers over 12 months at some of the country’s most disadvantaged schools. The first episode will be aired 8.30pm, April 19. Sumeyya Ilanbey

MY PLACE Rebecca Mizzi wants a world that’s “full of kindness and love” for her one-year-old son, Isaac. The Plumpton mum speaks to Sumeyya Ilanbey. I live in the area, I work in the area, and I’ve been a part of quite a few of the community groups – I do yoga, I’ve done a lot of children’s groups since having a baby, and I dance. What’s the best thing about living in Melton? I really like the great programs that the council runs. I think we’re really lucky that we get support from the council – they’re always trying to match the different needs of people living in the area … and just the diversity of the people, and how lovely everyone is … I’ve always come across nice people here.
I’ve become a mum in the last year, and we want to create as much of a positive space as possible … just surrounded by people who are positive, friendly and helpful. And people who are going to impact your life in a positive way. [I’d like a world] full of kindness and love for Isaac. What’s been some of the greatest challenges you’ve faced as a first-time mother? Lots of things … I had a lot of problems with breastfeeding, and I found the breastfeeding support from Melton council was fantastic – if it weren’t for them, I don’t know how I would’ve coped.
What would you change if you could?
And some of the best things?
Probably the police situation – the closest police station we’ve got is at Caroline Springs, but that’s not manned all the time. So the main thing would be a 24-hour police station, or maybe even another one – the area is so big for one station to cover.
Definitely watching your child grow up. The way they rely on you and the love that they give to you is indescribable.
Where’s your favourite place to hang out? We have a really nice park in our estate I like taking my little one to. Otherwise, the Caroline Springs lake is really nice, and the shopping complex. What are you passionate about? I guess just creating a nice environment.
You were involved in Melton council’s I Belong project recently – why was this something you were passionate about? When I was asked to take part, I thought it was another amazing thing Melton council is doing to introduce people to know others who are also living in the area. I want to leave a world that’s full of kindness and love, and a happy place for my child, and that’s why it’s important to embrace diversity … at the end of the day, it’s about treating people nicely.

cr sophie ramsey mayor’s message
Cr Bob Turner Coburn Ward
Each year, on 25 April, our nation comes together to commemorate Anzac Day, to remember the brave servicemen and women who served this country...
Anzac Day, 25 April, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.
...in the pursuit of our freedom, peace and democracy. We pause and remember their sacrifices, and pay respect to their courage.
The date itself marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers – the Anzacs – on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. Thousands lost their lives that day, including 8,500 Australians.
As Mayor, it will be my great privilege to attend the Dawn Service in Melton, and I invite residents to join me, to remember the Anzacs, and those who continue to serve in defence of freedom, on battlefields across the world. I’d also like to invite members of the public to place a white commemorative cross in the specially marked area on the Melton Civic Centre lawn. The crosses are available for a gold coin donation from the Melton Library and Learning Hub, Melton Civic Centre and the Melton Visitor Information Centre; and all proceeds go to the Partners of Veterans Association. I think many of you will agree that a vibrant and dynamic business community in a growing municipality like ours is extremely important. Local businesses provide vital local jobs as well as goods and services needed to help our local economy grow. This is why I encourage local businesses to nominate for the 2017 City of Melton Business Excellence Awards, proudly presented by Quest Apartments, Caroline Springs. The awards are an outstanding opportunity for business owners to showcase what makes their business stand out. For more information, visit Council’s website, melton.vic.gov.au/businessawards Residents are also invited to comment on Council’s Draft 2017/2018 Budget, which includes a $52.1 million capital works program, and the retention of the $70 pensioner rate rebate to eligible homeowners. Comments will be accepted until Wednesday 3 May. Visit Council’s website at melton.vic.gov.au for details. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any ideas or issues on 0412 584 067 or sophie.ramsey@melton.vic.gov.au
A Proud Community Growing Together 10 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 18, 2017
Each year, we pay our respects to the Anzacs; we honour those who were killed in battle, the servicemen and women who returned to their families with the memories of that day etched in their hearts; and all the military personnel who have since sacrificed so much to preserve our way of life. In the City of Melton, we are hosting two Dawn Services; one in Melton and one in Caroline Springs. It’s an opportunity to reflect and recognise service and sacrifice. I encourage residents, their families and friends, to attend one of these services, and remember the brave men and women who gave all they had on Anzac Cove 100 years ago. Lest we forget. I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind residents that they are invited to comment on Council’s Draft 2017/2018 Budget by making a written submission until 5pm on Wednesday 3 May. The Section 223 Committee meeting to consider submissions will be held on Tuesday 6 June, and the final budget will be adopted at the 26 June Ordinary Meeting. Small business operators will be honing their digital marketing skills thanks to an enterprise launched in Melton last week. Western BACE’s Digital BACE Marketing Makerspace will show start-ups how and when to use 3D printing, virtual reality software, computers and cameras for marketing. The aim is for Digital BACE to give small businesses in Melbourne’s growth corridor the inside running when it comes to digital marketing and using new technology. Western BACE was last year given $50,000 in LaunchVic funding to create Marketing Makerspace. Marketing Entourage and BlueChilli will be partners with Western BACE in delivering the sessions. Western BACE chief executive Mark Corrie is hoping local businesses and manufacturers will learn a lot from the initiative. “Western BACE is creating a community-driven business hub in Melbourne’s west where people matter,” Mr Corrie said. “Thanks to LaunchVic and the establishment of our Digital BACE … the community can have access to digital and design software and tools, video and photography services, social impact and innovation events, as well as expertise provided through our network and support partners.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Plumpton’s hot shot When winter rains rolled in, Thomas Armstrong would find himself unable to play the outdoor sports he enjoyed. So 18 months ago, the Plumpton teenager decided to try clay target shooting – and he’s been hooked ever since, winning several championships along the way. The 16-year-old came first, against men and women of all ages, at last month’s Australian National Trap Championships in the single-barrel discipline in Wagga Wagga. He’ll be heading back to Wagga Wagga to represent Australia in its junior team next year.
And over the weekend of April 8 and 9, he made the Australian juniors team for the universal trench championships and will be heading to France later this year. “I’m very proud,” Thomas said. “I look forward to representing Australia, not only in Australia, but also internationally.” Last year, Thomas, 16, made the Australian world team to go to Ireland for the down the line championships in Ireland, coming home with a team gold medal. FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir goes behind the wheel to discover Uber eats … After spending hours with my friend, the Uber Food Dude, cruising the inner west making deliveries and talking with a cross-section of restaurant folk, one thing is clear … they may not like giving Uber a hefty slice of the price of each meal dispatched but they were all, to one degree or another, enthusiastic about being involved. The reasons? Simple. No need to hire drivers … and keeping faith with regulars. A weekly deposit in their business bank account – my understanding is that, under current arrangements, Uber takes 35 per cent of each meal’s cover price – is guaranteed. And – importantly, going by the feedback I get – promotional value and the exposure via the Uber Eats app. Uber takes the photos that go with every eater entry on the app – and they are very good. Gorgeous, actually! My Uber Eats driver pal had previously regaled me with stories and explanations of how it all works, including the very slick technology that makes it possible. Disappointingly, for the tabloidish story-seeking journo that resides within in me, there has been little by way of outrageous yarns arising from his regular delivery routine. Just eateries preparing food for regular folks. I think everyone understands that such an operation runs on very tight margins – just like the restaurant game itself. But still, something doesn’t quite make sense for me in all this … how is it viable when Uber
takes a hefty slice and the drivers get something like $8 to $12 for each delivery? At Luxsmith in Seddon, we’re told it’s their first night doing Uber – and early in the evening, they’ve already seen more than a dozen orders go out the door. That seems pretty good going to me. The recipient of our Luxsmith delivery, for whom this is also an Uber debut, is happy to see us. There are idiosyncrasies in the ordering habits of inner-west Uber Eats users. One of our deliveries, for instance, finds us taking a burger meal from Mr Burger at Yarraville Gardens to Edgewater – and only a couple of blocks from St Burgs and its fine burgers. Later in the night, my pal makes the journey from Happy Four in Yarraville to a part of Footscray where there are a couple of perfectly fine and very similar Chinese establishments. Go figure! For my friend, doing Uber Eats makes all kinds of sense. The money may not be of the get-rich-quick variety, but a handful of deliveries a night for a couple of nights a week adds up to some handy income. Unlike the Uber passenger service, there are no members of the public with whom to deal – just happy, and hungry, customers. Deliveries are – thanks to the Uber driver app “ping” alerts to nearby drivers – almost always very local, rarely more than a few kilometres.
ISSAN THAI STREET FOOD
MR BURGER
He reports that some of the most frequently used inner-west restaurants for Uber deliveries are several that may appear to not be particularly popular – but they come alive when the hungry sofa corps get on their mobiles, especially later at night! In my eats journeys in recent months, I’ve become increasingly familiar with the sight of Uber deliveries lined up, and waiting to be
picked up, at many of the places we have been chowing down. It’s a whole ‘nuther world. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Cobras keen to keep heat on By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh may be the reigning premier, but the Ballarat Football League’s top side isn’t taking the foot off the pedal. While coach Travis Hodgson was happy to give the players a longer break after the club’s first senior premiership since the 1970s, the playing group had other ideas. “I gave them the choice to come back to pre-season later, having gone deeper in the season than the year before when we didn’t make finals,” Hodgson said. “But they were keen to start at the same date as last year.” Hodgson said the group had gone from strength to strength on the track, while performances in the three pre-season games were better than they were a year ago. Pleasingly for the Cobras, only three of their premiership players are not returning. The club knew early that former coach Cameron
Richardson and former AFL player Damian Cupido weren’t coming back, while Coby Miller has relocated to Melbourne. Coming in are former VFL player Scott Sherlock and Dean Heta from the Ovens and Murray Football League, while former Cobras’ junior Ryley Stuhldreier returns. Hodgson said they would have a stronger side than in the past season. “The changes are minimal, with three decent outs and three decent ins. “There’s still a lot of guys in the 20-23 bracket who are still improving.” Hodgson admits the loss of Richardson and Cupido will impact on the game style. “That’s about 95 goals from those two you lose,” he said. “Jarrah Maksymow will be a better player than last season, though. “He came in to the club at round five off the back of no preparation. He’ll get more ball directed through him. “Hamish Coulton, Alec Del Papa and a
couple of others all kicked between 20 and 30 goals each last season. We’ll hopefully get a few more goals from them,” he said. “Dean [Heta] can play either end as well. We’ll have a spread of goalkickers.” Hodgson said while several of the younger players had stepped up over the pre-season, Hamish Coulton had been the standout. “There’s the natural development, and he’s put the hard work in during the season. “We expect him to be better again this season.” The Cobras start their season against Darley on Sunday. Hodgson knows it’ll be a challenge for a side that’s not used to being the hunted. At this stage, they are looking to field a near full-strength side. “We couldn’t have handled the situation better so far … until they are out there, it’s an unknown,” he said. “Half a dozen games last season, teams didn’t expect much from us. Now, we are how
Devils all fired up Over the past two weekends, Darley has watched on as other Ballarat Football League teams started their seasons – and they’re raring to take to the field themselves this weekend. The Devils start their season with the biggest test of all, against local rival and reigning premiers Bacchus Marsh, on Sunday. After a busy off season, new Devils’ coach Heath Scotland is excited to get under way. Scotland, who has spent the past two years at Doncaster, returns to his junior club, replacing playing coach Jarrod Edwards who has retired. “I have a lot of friends at the club, and it was the right opportunity at the right time,” Scotland said. “I’d had enough over that side of the city, and couldn’t be happier to be home.” Scotland is just one of several former Devils to return this season including Lachlan Herring, Nicholas Thacker and Kyle Doyle. Some not returning include Henderson medal-winner Steve Kennedy, Anthony Chui and Mitch Banner. Scotland said the loss of Kennedy would be a big one, but he hopes they have recruited players to fill all vacancies. “Losing Steve is the biggest blow … he’s hard to replace,” he said. “We’ve brought in midfielders … Brian Graham is capable of playing at a higher level. I think he’s better than his brother, Nick, who’s on Carlton’s list. “Chris Graham is a class-out – they are two class additions. Dan Roy is my playing assistant coach, and is a premiership winner and captain of his former side. “We’ve picked up a key back in Kay Pearson while Kyle Docherty is a centre half-forward who gives huge value in the forward line.” Scotland, who played 268 AFL games for Carlton and Collingwood, will also pull on the boots. He’ll miss the first couple of runs due to knee surgery, but said he was feeling fit. The biggest ins for the Devils could come from within, though. Brad Inglis, who didn’t think he would play again after breaking his leg a couple of years ago, has returned and played in every practice match. Matt Inglis, who is also on Geelong’s VFL list, didn’t play any football last year because of a serious ankle injury. Then there are captain Shane Page and vice-captain Darren Leonard. “Shane is our captain – a quality player – missed most of last year – Darren missed a big chunk of the season,” Scotland said. “Shane hasn’t missed a beat during the pre-season, and
we saw Lake Wendouree last season – we’re the yardstick.” The positives aren’t just flowing for the senior football side, with Cobras’ president Adam Sutherland saying the club was thriving across the board. He said they aren’t satisfied with just one premiership win, and are aiming for under-18.5s, reserves and seniors to make finals. “The players are setting the agenda,” he said. As well as three new recruits, four former Cobras – Brenton Payne, Dillon Vojo-Rainbow, Jacob Wheelahan and Daniel Foley – who are playing VFL, have chosen to align with Cobras. “It’s fantastic to see these guys, who are at a higher level, want to be a part of it,” he said. “If or when they come and play, they know they’re coming into a good environment.” The club is one of four clubs to field a third open-age side in an AFL Goldfields competition. Sutherland said the women’s side has had an influx of new players, while netball sides look like attracting more talent also.
Darley sets sights on finals
Darley is hoping a fit Shane Page will help its rise up the ladder. (Damian Visentini)
Darren has played three of our four practice matches.” Scotland said there was a lot of motivation heading into 2017 after finishing a disappointing sixth last season. The Devils snuck into the finals last year, but were no match for the top sides. “Listening to the boys,
there is a disappointment,” he said. “Coming off a premiership they may have taken it for granted. Injuries had a big impact, too. “I’m expecting a strong season from Darley this year,” he said.
Darley head coach Renee Hulls has her sights set on Ballarat Netball League finals. In her first season at the Devils, Hulls said strong pre-season form from all five sides had her confident that they would be in the mix come September. The Devils made big strides in A grade last year, finishing with seven wins, up from four the year before, and showed that for long periods of games they could match it with the top sides. It has been a number of years since the top side has made finals. “With how the A-grade side has been travelling, if we don’t make finals I’ll be shattered,” Hulls said. “We had some really good hit-outs in practice matches against Romsey and Ballan. “All our sides are a bit stronger this year. If five out of five sides could make finals I would love that.” As well as being head coach and coaching the A-grade and B-grade teams, Hulls will play in the A-grade side. Last season Hulls was playing-coach at BNL rival Melton. She’s one of three inclusions for the side. Werribee Centrals duo Amanda Wilson and Amy Giaini have switched leagues, coming across from the Geelong and District Football League. Giaini was best on court in the Centrals A-grade premiership against Bannockburn last year. Both have been part of multiple A-grade premiership winning teams with Centrals, who have lost one game in the past three seasons. “Amy is a midcourter and Amanda is a defender,” Hulls said. “Amanda is tall and is a former Victorian Netball League player. With myself in goals we’ve been able to strength all three areas of the court.” Tara Parker has left the Devils to join Melton South. Hulls said they would look to have a core group and would call on players from lower grades when needed. Tara Murray

Young Thoroughbreds stand proud at championships
The winning Melton Thoroughbreds’ under-12 girls and coaches are all smiles with their medals. (Basketball Victoria)
Melton Thoroughbreds youngest stars exceeded expectations by winning two titles at the Basketball Victoria Country 2017 Country Championships in Bendigo recently. The Thoroughbreds entered teams in the under-12s division 2 girls competition and division 5 boys premiership competition – both teams held their nerve and won their grand final. Melton was the only club to win more than one title at the championships. The win in the girl’s competition was especially pleasing for the Thoroughbreds – it was the first time the club has entered a girls under-12 team. They defeated Colac 51-25 in the grand final. Coach Gabby Eaton said that while it had taken a while to build the team, the hard work
had been amply rewarded. “I really didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “The country sides seem to be stronger than a lot of the metro teams. “There was a lot of sides which were a lot faster and taller. A lot of the girls were a foot taller than our team.” She said the championship win was a big thing for the development of basketball for girls in Melton. “I think it topped off what was a very long weekend,” she said. “Each team pushed us on the way to making the grand final. They played 10 games across the weekend. “All the girls were very excited and got to take to the court in the grand final.” Eaton said that after their win, the girls watched the boys win a much closer grand
final against Horsham, 43-35. She said she hoped the success of the girls’ team would see more girls get involved in basketball. She once played for the Thoroughbreds’ women’s side, but the club hasn’t had a Big V women’s team for a few years. “Hopefully, these girls can continue on and into youth league and build up from there. “It would be fantastic to see it [women’s Big V] come back and give young girls local players to look up to. Hopefully these girls can be part of Big V for Melton.” Earlier this year, the Thoroughbreds’ under-18 boys team won the division 3 country championships with a comprehensive 75-56 win against Ararat Redbacks. Tara Murray
Son of a gun aims for the top By Lance Jenkinson Nick Stuhldreier, the son of a country football legend, is relishing the chance to skipper the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. Stuhldreier is working as a co-captain alongside teammate Luke Hitch as part of a four-player leadership group. “It’s a big honour being recognised as one of the best leaders in the region,” Stuhldreier said. “I was a bit shocked and it was pretty humbling being voted in by your peers. “It shows that you have the respect of your teammates.” Stuhldreier gives the Western Jets leadership set-up the thumbs up. The Jets opted to have representation in all three age groups that make up the side, giving a voice to the bottom-age 17-year-old players. “It’s good that we’ve got a spread across all the age groups because in the past it’s been left to the second-year players and the first year players have sometimes been scared to stand up,” he said. Stuhldreier believes sharing the captaincy is beneficial. The workload is not as much of a burden as it would be if an individual was named. “It’s not so much responsibility just left on one person and we both can bring things to the table.” Stuhldreier has mixed his leadership with good form on the field in the early rounds of the season. The 18-year-old has been in the Western Jets’ best players for his past two matches and was the stand-out for his side in the most recent game against Sandringham Dragons. “I started off slow first round, but the last two rounds I’ve started to built up some form,” he said. Stuhldreier has taken on a new playing role for the Jets.
Last year, the boy from Bacchus Marsh was used in a rebounding role off half-back, but this season he has graduated to the midfield. That versatility is probably what saw him earn a call-up to Vic Metro’s extended squad, in which he is hoping to survive the final cut. Stuhldreier and his brother, Ryley, a former Western Jet and once on Geelong’s VFL list, were born to play football. Their father, Chris, who has had a major influence on their football careers, was a country football legend for Kyabram in the Goulburn Valley Football League, which granted him hall of fame status last year, and for Lavington in the Ovens and Murray Football League. “Dad didn’t play at the highest level, but I think he kicked 100 goals for 10 years straight [including 171 in a single season in 1993] in the Goulburn Valley league and the Ovens and Murray league,” Nick said. “He got approached by a couple of [AFL] clubs, but he’s a police officer and at the time he was young, and it wasn’t really paying well to play, so he chose to stick with his career and played country footy and kicked close to 2000 goals.” Stuhldreier, though, would jump at the chance of an AFL career. The one-eyed Western Bulldogs fan said it was his dream to make it to the big league. The St Patrick’s College year 12 student was named the Jets’ best first-year player last season, but he wants to take his football up another level to be considered a draft chance. “It was good to be recognised last year, but I want to build on that this year,” he said. “I’m aiming to make it to the AFL.” Nick Stuhldreier was honoured to be named co-captain of the Western Jets this season. Melton South’s big start to the season continued with the club taking on Sunbury Lions on Good Friday in the Ballarat Football Netball League. All eight Panthers’ sides had first-up wins against Melton the previous weekend, and hoped to make it two from two. In the Essendon District Football League, Hillside and Taylors Lakes faced off in a division 1 Good Friday clash, while in Riddell District Football Netball League, Romsey and Melton Centrals faced off Thursday night. Senior footballers and A-grade netballers played stand-alone matches, with all other round two matches on April 22. All results at Star Weekly’s sports twitter account @starweeklysport

Caroline Springs Cricket Club needs a new senior coach after Kane Sevior didn’t reapply for the role. Sevior has coached the seniors for the past two seasons, including the recent one, the club’s first in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association. The senior side finished last in north A1. Smart thinking for off-road adventures A seven-year itch pushed Opposite Lock Melton to branch out from its starting blocks on the Melton Toyota parts counter – the business moved into new premises at 6 Norton Drive last July. Manager Brad Evans says the move means the original business aim of becoming a destination store for 4WD enthusiasts is fast coming to fruition. “For nearly eight years, we’ve continued to add to our range of 4WD, camping, caravanning and general vehicle accessories,” Brad says. “Anyone who comes in will be blown away with what we have to make a trip exploring Australia a successful, well-equipped venture. “We sell everything needed to go off-road and have fun – bull bars, towbars, driving lights, UHF radios, swags, roof racks … and we carry out in-house fittings for our whole range, from complete vehicle set-ups to suspension modification and serious mods like Elockers.
“Opposite Lock is no ordinary 4WD accessory retailer.......run by 4WD enthusiasts” “We also do additional work needed for caravans, such as electric brake controllers and 12-pin and Anderson-plug installations.” Opposite Lock is no ordinary 4WD accessory retailer. The store is run by 4WD enthusiasts who offer the best advice around. “We’re all 4WD nuts,” Brad says. “It’s not a job for us – it’s a passion. We all use and test any new product – if we’re not happy to have it on our own vehicles, we don’t sell it. “There’s more than 50 years’ knowledge and experience in our team and we work together to apply that know-how. It’s our team discussions and brainstorming that helps the business reach the next level. It’s a rewarding dynamic.” Opposite Lock Melton also has winches, recovery gear, dual battery systems, driving lights, UHF radios, canopies, camping gear storage and the full range of Darche outdoor gear. The Big Deals for Easter catalogue sale is on until the end of April, packed with great offers for those setting up a vehicle, through to more experienced off-roaders looking for new gear. Opposite Lock, 6 Norton Drive, Melton. Opens 8am-5pm Monday-Friday and 9am-noon Saturday. Inquiries: 8746 0340

ROD’S VERDICT A bit weird.
know who’d buy the 500X; anyone who wants to be different. In a sea of cookie-cutter blandness, this is the rugged individual. It won’t appeal to everyone but it’s not trying to. It’s the type of car that gets noticed and starts conversations. Given all the equipment, the 500X can comfortably justify its price; it even has blind-spot warning and there are hundreds of optional bits to personalise it. The ride is hard, the seats are thin and you can’t lose concentration, especially at speed. But the electronics are easy and intuitive, something of a first for Fiat. The fit and finish is also a step up from cheaper 500 models. Rear seat room is tight – only kids will fit on longer drives – but the boot is generous given the car’s compact dimensions. The front passenger’s seat folds forward for extra room up back, handy for installing a child seat. It took a while to acclimatise to the steering and accelerator and, being tall and slab-sided, the car can be knocked about by strong crosswinds.

guess Fiat 500s sell because they’re small, cheap and cute. So what to make of one that’s large, somewhat less than cute and costs more than a Commodore? Well, it has all the gear – selectable four-wheel drive, keyless entry and start, navigation, cruise, dual-zone air-conditioning, collision warning and none-too-subtle lane keeping. And rear doors. This one also gets a solid four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed auto. It’s not quick and can bog down before the turbo cuts in, but power is sufficient for wrangling traffic and well up on the standard 500. It’s nowhere near as economical though. Despite a little body roll, the handling is competent. The ride, however, is sharp, even around town and given pretty basic seating this makes it tiring over long distances. It’s intended for the city; behaviour at 110km/h is noisy and rather tentative. I guess there’s a place for this car. I just can’t imagine who’d buy it with Suzuki Vitaras priced where they are.
