Honouring their memory
(Shawn Smits)
When Australian troops landed on the Gallipoli peninsula 102 years ago they couldn’t have imagined how costly the war would be. More than 141,000 Allied troops were wounded and more than 44,000 died by the time the site was evacuated in 1916. And that’s why it’s important to remember, reflect and commemorate, Bacchus Marsh RSL president Cherrison Lawton says. “Their lives need to count. If we don’t remember the things of the past, we can easily be repeating them. We are such a privileged country but it has come at a great cost.” Hundreds and thousands of Australians will attend the dawn services and marches today, including Rockbank Primary School captains Jack and Kendra and World War II veteran Allan Godfrey (pictured). New tribute for hero By Sumeyya Ilanbey Rupert “Mick” Moon was once described as being “too difficult for command”. But it was this tenacity that defined his success in the military during World War I. Affectionately known as “the son of Bacchus Marsh”, Moon lead the 58th infantry battalion to an enemy strongpoint (Hindenburg Line) in Bullecourt, France, on May 12, 1917, where they captured 184 Germans, two officers, several machine guns and the enemy trench. During the attack, Moon was wounded four times but each time continued to lead his men and refused medical attention until he was sure the job was done. “We would have followed him anywhere,” one of his men later said. “He was that game.” It was for this act of bravery that Moon was
awarded the highest accolade for gallantry, the Victoria Cross. “His bravery was magnificent,” the award citation stated. “And was largely instrumental in the successful issue against superior numbers, the safeguarding of the flank of the attack, and the capture of many prisoners and machine guns.” One hundred years since the Hindenburg Line success, the Bacchus Marsh RSL and Bacchus Marsh Great War Centenary Committee will unveil a commemorative paving stone and new sign to honour Moon at the Rupert Vance Moon Reserve. Committee secretary Geoff Threlfall said the current sign looked “shabby” and doesn’t mention Moon’s Victoria Cross. “He is Bacchus Marsh’s only VC awardee so we want to honour him correctly and make sure
his memory still lives on,” Mr Threlfall said. “He is the famous son of Bacchus Marsh.” In March 1918, Moon was sent back to Australia to recover from the wounds he sustained in the May 12 attack. Less than six months later, he rejoined the 58th Battalion and served in the Western Front at Mont St Quentin. He returned to Australia in October 1919. Moon, who was a bank clerk by trade, had many jobs before settling in Geelong and marrying Susan Alison May Vincent in 1931. He died at his Barwon Heads home in 1986 and is survived by his two children, who will be at the unveiling of the stones and commemorative sign at the Rupert Moon Reserve, Saturday, May 6, 10.30am. A dedication ceremony will follow at the Bacchus Marsh RSL. For more information, visit bmgwcc.com

Roads, rail, schools top wish list By Sumeyya Ilanbey A railway station, roads upgrades and land for new schools top the list of projects Melton council wants funded in next week’s state budget. Melton council has been strongly advocating to the state government to set aside funding for the Toolern railway station that was first promised six years ago when the Toolern Park precinct structure plan was approved. The station, which is proposed for adjacent to 201 Ferris Road, is expected to cost $20 million.
The federal government had committed $125,000 for a feasibility study to help plan for the station in the 2012-13 budget. The study has since been used to set out design works for the duplication of the Ballarat railway line instead. Another project that’s been in the pipeline since the approval of the Toolern Park PSP is the Ferris Road grade separations, expected to cost $44 million. Melton council engagement and advocacy manager Dan Hogan said the grade separation was essential for the Toolern activity centre,
which will one day have 7000 square metres of retail floor space. Mr Hogan said the council had also been strongly advocating for the state government to purchase land and build new schools at Eynesbury, Burnside and Bridge Road, Melton South. “As the City of Melton continues to grow at a rapid rate, it is vital that investments are made in delivery of critical infrastructure,” Mr Hogan said. “The current state of the public transport system acts as a disincentive for CBD-bound commuters, who instead are
forced to opt for long, congested car commutes. The funding of the Toolern train station will significantly help in alleviating this issue.” Moorabool council is advocating for a number of projects to help alleviate traffic congestion in Bacchus Marsh, including western and eastern links and an “integrated transport solution” for the town. It has also identified the Parwan Employment Precinct, an indoor aquatic centre and the re-opening of the Gordon railway station as priorities. The state government will hand down its 2017-18 budget next Tuesday (May 2).
Safe delivery for maternity renovations
(Dennis Manktelow)
Renovation works at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital’s maternity department started last week. As part of the $2.5 million refurbishment the number of post-delivery beds will increase from 11 to 15, the nurse workstation and delivery suites will be upgraded and a three-bay nursery will be built. John Ballard, administrator of Djerriwarrh Health Services that oversees the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, said it was an important milestone for the hospital and they expected to eventually accommodate up to 1200 births a year. “At Djerriwarrh, we are continuing to get on with the job of compassionately and professionally caring for the community we serve,” Dr Ballard said. “The upgrade of the maternity department at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital is another vote of confidence in Djerriwarrh Health Services and its future. “It will better equip and support the hospital to meet the immediate and future care needs of the Bacchus Marsh and Melton communities.” The renovation is part of the state government’s $10.6 million funding commitment to the hospital announced last October. There will be a new and temporary entrance to the maternity department, and patient and visitor access to the front of the hospital will not change. The maternity department will still operate during the renovations.

Warming thoughts Wanted – avid knitters. Donations of 500 knitted items are being sought from across Melton to help keep people warm this winter. Knitters are being asked to attach “a message of kindness” to their woolly goodies and drop them at the Taylors Hill Neighbourhood House or Melton and Caroline Springs libraries by June 10. The items will be distributed, via local charities, to people doing it rough this winter. “Not only is [this] a practical gesture in keeping people warm when it’s cold, but … receiving something new, and just knowing there are people in the local community who care enough about them to make something that takes time and effort, is good for people’s overall wellbeing,” a Melton council spokeswoman said. Kind heart helps Africa Ruth isn’t the type to sit idly by while millions of people struggle with dire food shortages in Africa. The 11-year-old Melton South girl (pictured) has started a project to “see a family smile and put a meal on their table”. “Living in Australia is something special,” she said. “We can’t take that for granted because other people around the world would be wishing for a life we have. I just wanted to help them.” The United Nations has declared a state of famine in South Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen, with more than a million children suffering from severe malnutrition and at risk of dying this year.
With the help of her family, Ruth has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for donation to various non-government organisations working in South Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen. Her mum, Deruka Dekuek, says Ruth’s compassion and empathy, at such a young age, has inspired her. “In this world, we need helping hands and kind hearts,” Ms Dekuek said. “I would really encourage people to support her because she came up with this idea all by herself.” To donate, visit gofundme.com/5zf2k-walkfor-them. A team effort for April By Sumeyya Ilanbey When eight-year-old April was diagnosed with non-hodgkin’s lymphoma last year, her friend Oscar thought: “Why? Why do bad things happen to good people?” The 11-year-old Taylors Hill boy says that before April’s diagnosis he didn’t realise how prevalent cancer was or what people who are battling the disease go through. Oscar and his family have set up a team for this year’s Caroline Springs Relay for Life in honour of their young friend. “I wanted to show people how upsetting it can be for anyone, especially a kind person, to have this thing happen to them,” Oscar said.
‘‘
We feel like it’s unfair … she’s so resilient

- Olivia Hodgetts
“And it’s sad knowing they didn’t do anything bad to [be diagnosed with cancer]. “April used to do calisthenics and [since the diagnosis] she’s always tried to keep a good mind and has always tried to lead a normal life.” April is undergoing a second round of chemotherapy and hopes it will be her last. Oscar’s mum, Olivia Hodgetts, said this was the second time the family will have taken part in Relay for Life, but this time they were fundraising for someone they knew who had been diagnosed with cancer. She says the family wanted to raise money for the Cancer Council and raise awareness about the disease. “We feel like it’s unfair that little kids have to deal with such a serious illness and that’s

why we decided to call the team Inspired by April,” she said. “We’re inspired by the fact that an eight-year-old girl can tolerate the pain, have forgiveness and not blame anyone for the cancer. She’s so resilient.” Ms Hodgetts says her goal for Lent this year was to sign up 40 people to the team. She’s since surpassed that goal, with 47 people signing
up. She’s urging anyone who can spare a few minutes, or a few dollars, to donate for the good cause. The Caroline Springs Relay for Life will run overnight September 16-17 at the Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve. To donate to Ms Hodgetts team, or set up a team of your own, visit relayforlife.org.au.

End for age of ‘entitlement’ State politicians could be forced to pay back wrongly claimed entitlements and second residence allowances could be capped in a bid to stamp out a “culture of entitlement”. An audit, by PricewaterhouseCoopers, has called for tougher laws and regulations to oversee MP salaries and allowances. As part of the recommendations MPs could be forced to “certify” that the information they provide in claiming entitlements is correct. The lower house speaker and upper house president could also be given the power to “enforce regulations and compel” MPs to refund overpayments. The audit followed revelations that Melton MP Don Nardella and Tarneit MP Telmo Languiller wrongly claimed a second residence allowance designed for regional MPs. Another 32 MPs who claimed the second residence allowance were investigated as part of the audit. Of those, one was “unwilling to provide relevant documentation citing privacy reasons”. Liberal’s Benambra MP Bill Tilley told Fairfax Media he had provided redacted documents to the auditors due to privacy concerns but has since provided 74 pages of additional information, including utility bills. The auditor’s report will be tabled in Parliament next week. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Brimbank raises ‘stink’ over tip By Ewen McRae Brimbank council will fight the proposed expansion of the Ravenhall landfill, saying the west “has been dumped on enough”. The Environment Protection Authority last month granted works approval for a 96-hectare expansion to the southern portion of the landfill site. Brimbank mayor John Hedditch last week said the council had lodged an application with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to review the decision.
“Our community is being dumped on and the underlying attitude simply stinks,” he said. “We’re calling on the state government to do the right thing and reject any plan to extend a rubbish tip that already has a heap of existing problems. “We are appalled that EPA Victoria recently granted a works approval for this huge expansion. “Council has serious concerns regarding the proposed expansion … because of the potential risks this poses to the health and wellbeing of the people of Brimbank and Melton.”
Council said it received numerous complaints about dust, odour, vermin and birds associated with the landfill, which is about 1.5 kilometres from residential properties in Derrimut and Deer Park. The council is urging the state government to consider more modern ways of waste disposal rather than expanding the landfill. “It is hard to believe that the Victorian government would enable old-fashioned waste disposal, which hasn’t altered since the 1950s, and is inconsistent with contemporary international standards,” Mr Hedditch said.
“We believe Victoria needs to look to the future and find innovative sustainable alternatives.” Council’s decision to appeal to VCAT received applause from the public gallery at last week’s council meeting, where several councillors spoke passionately in support of the motion. Melton council has lodged its own appeal against the proposed expansion with VCAT. While the EPA has granted works approval, planning approval for the landfill expansion is still before Planning Minister Richard Wynne.

Hinch hits the road for upgrades By Sumeyya Ilanbey On a 17-kilometre stretch of the Western Highway, where the road conditions are “clearly substandard”, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were driving through country Victoria. Except it’s only 30 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, carries more than 50,000 vehicles a day, and is the nation’s second busiest highway for freight movement. On this section of the Western Highway, between Melton and Caroline Springs, there’s direct access from dirt roads, no flyovers,
interchanges or service roads, and until recently there were bus stops and places to do u-turns. With the population of the City of Melton set to exceed 450,000, the need to upgrade this section of road to freeway status has never been more pressing, mayor Sophie Ramsey told a press conference on Sunday. She was joined by Victorian Senator Derryn Hinch who has promised to lobby the federal government, on behalf of Melton council, for $78 million to upgrade the road. “This is a nationally significant highway, less
than 30 kilometre from the Melbourne CBD, yet it is clearly substandard,” Cr Ramsey said. “If no action is taken, it will not only impact our residents but will have a detrimental effect on freight movements across the state. “Upgrading this major contributor to the local, state and national economy will also boost by improving freight efficiency.” Senator Hinch told reporters while he hated the word infrastructure as a journalist, he was soon coming to grip with its potency. “When you’re standing here, and people are telling you the population could increase in the
next few years to 450,000, then you know not only is infrastructure the buzz word, it’s the most important word,” Senator Hinch said. The upgrades will require a half-diamond interchange at Mt Cottrell Road, an overpass at Paynes Road, and an additional interchange at Melton West. Melton chief executive Kel Tori said this would significantly improve traffic flow. “This is one of the busiest highways in Australia and motorists are having to slow down to 90 km/h [from 110 km/h] on what should be a freeway,” Mr Tori says.
Dealing for dementia Rosemary Hare has been playing card games for as long as she can remember. She not only loves being mentally stimulated, but also meeting like-minded people to play with along the way. About 10 years ago, a group of Melton residents, including Ms Hare, started meeting to play bridge. Three years ago, they decided to become part of the Australian Bridge Federation and formed the Melton Bridge Club. The group has 14 members who meet Tuesday nights at the Arnolds Creek Community Centre. Ms Hare said bridge “took card-playing to the next level”. “It’s a friendly game,” she says. “You move around so you’re not sitting with the same people all the time, and certainly for older people it gets your brain going.” The club will be raising money for research institute NeuRA at its meeting next Tuesday,
with the funds going towards dementia research. Ms Hare says the fundraiser was close to her heart as her sister, who has dementia, was recently placed in permanent care. “Hopefully they can find a way of diagnosing dementia sooner,” Ms Hare said. The fundraiser will run from 7-10pm on Tuesday, May 2 at the Arnolds Creek Community Centre, 19 Claret Ash Boulevard, Melton West. Entry is $6 per person, with all proceeds going to NeuRA. Ms Hare said there would be plenty of opportunity to donate on the night, and bridge players will be given extra bridge master points. RSVP by Sunday, April 30 to 0407 894 817. Towering effort on Ballarat line By Sumeyya Ilanbey Ballarat railway line commuters will enjoy better mobile phone coverage by the end of this year, with the state government signalling the start of an $18 million project to eliminate mobile phone blackspots. Mobile coverage will be improved along the state’s five busiest regional rail corridors as part of the Regional Rail Connectivity project, which is being funded by the state government in conjunction with Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. Mobile reception repeaters, which are designed to boost in-train coverage, are already being installed in VLocity trains. The three telcos will build five new mobile towers along the Ballarat railway corridor in the next two years. The state government says mobile phone coverage will be significantly boosted, particularly between Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. Once the reception repeaters are installed, mobile phone coverage will be boosted to 95 per cent for Telstra customers, with the mobile phone towers expected to further boost coverage to almost 100 per cent. Public Transport Users Association Ballarat spokesman Ben Lever welcomed the “long-overdue” announcement, with commuters having campaigned for several years for improved mobile phone coverage. Mr Lever said connectivity between Melton and Warrenheip was currently “really unreliable” and he hoped the new towers and repeaters would alleviate the problem.
“Good mobile connectivity is really important for allowing people to make productive use of their commutes, like working or studying,” Mr Lever said. “This will be a big benefit to existing commuters, but hopefully it will also encourage more people to get out of their cars and reduce traffic congestion.”
‘‘
This will be a big benefit to existing commuters
’’
- Ben Lever
Small Business, Innovation and Trade Minister Philip Dalidakis said the project would be a massive win for Ballarat line commuters. “Regular commuters spend up to 20 hours per week on regional trains and we need to keep them connected so they can keep in touch with their loved ones and use their travel time productively,” Mr Dalidakis said. The state government announced the project in November, 2015, intending for construction of the mobile phone towers to start in mid-2016. Telstra area general manager Steve Tinker said the organisation was proud to be working with the state government to “bring this project to life”. “We know that increased coverage is a priority for our customers and for businesses in regional Australia – and that is exactly what this project delivers,” Mr Tinker said.

Rams relish a facelift “The fact that we don’t have heating or cooling is an issue. “This upgrade will create a safe and clean environment for everyone.” The club is planning to undertake the upgrades in several stages, with hopes to start the first stage by the end of next month. To make a tax-deductible donation, visit asf. org.au/projects/rockbank-football-sportingclub. Local businesses are being requested to help the Rams by chipping in with equipment.
The clubrooms at Rockbank Football Sporting Club haven’t a facelift for more than a decade. The kitchen and flooring are old and there’s no heating or cooling. Club deputy vice-president Simon Vannuccini succinctly describes the condition of the Rams’ rooms at Ian Cowie Reserve: “old and dated”. Mr Vannuccini said the club was hoping to raise $30,000 to give the clubrooms a “fresh and clean” makeover. “We’ve got 150 members … so we’re going to have a lot of families using the clubrooms,” he said.

An Albion father of two who was struck by a car in a hit-run collision near his home faces a long recovery. Jimmy Kalia’s wife, Bindu, said her husband was expected to remain in Royal Melbourne hospital’s intensive care unit for about a month before being transferred to a rehabilitation clinic to begin learning how to walk again. “It’s a long recovery,” she said. “He’s not able to walk … he’s on medication, he’s in a lot of pain.” About 11pm on Saturday, April 8, Mr Kalia was hit and left for dead on Anderson Road, near Ridley Street, by a car headed for Ballarat Road. The 37-year-old was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition and underwent surgery for major injuries to his kidney, stomach and back. Last week, his condition was upgraded from critical to stable. Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said police remained hopeful the driver would hand themselves in despite more than two weeks having passed since the incident. He said detectives were trying to locate a silvery-blue 2011-15 model Toyota Camry. He appealed for the driver to contact the police and anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to assist Mr Kalia’s wife and children. To donate, go to www.gofundme.com/ help-mel-hit-run-victim-jimmy.

NEWS
MY PLACE Cherrison Lawton was a member of the Royal Australian Air Force in the late ’60s and has recently been appointed as the first female president of the Bacchus Marsh RSL. She speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool? I feel so at home. There are so many names that are familiar – names of people but also street names. It’s very similar to where I grew up in Rockhampton. I grew up in the foothills of Mt Archer in Rockhampton. I’m looking out of my lounge to Mt Blackwood and Lerderderg Gorge now – so I feel very much at home. What would you change about the area if you could? I don’t want to be critical because Bacchus Marsh is fantastic, but I’d like to see, especially at the RSL, a lot more facilities for our servicemen and women. Our servicemen have to go to Melton and I know it’s not that far, but they’ve got to go out of our little town for some of the services.
Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool? Would I be very cheeky if I said my deck because it overlooks the village of Bacchus Marsh? I’m generally at the RSL and we do occasionally enjoy visiting the Providence [retirement village] where we see some of our friends. How do you feel about being the first female president of the Bacchus Marsh RSL? I am so privileged and honoured, and for the club to have the confidence in me is just quite amazing. When a 90-year-old couple come up to you and say, “I think we need a change”, there must be something in the wind. [Laughs.] To me, I don’t think there’s any difference between a male and a female … I suppose I’ve grown up in an environment where I was encouraged to always be equal, so this doesn’t feel any different. What veterans issues are you most passionate about and why? One of the things I’d like to see happen is that as well as senior veterans being looked after, the younger veterans are being helped to transition into their new lives. We are putting names to certain things, like post-traumatic stress disorder … but my desire is to ensure the younger veterans will keep reaching out so help can come to them. What direction would you like to take the Bacchus Marsh RSL in? What I’d really like to see is for it to become more accessible to younger and working veterans. Our RSL is quite geared to people who are not working at the moment.
(Dennis Manktelow)
What’s your connection to Moorabool? We moved here only in 2011 [from St Albans], but we had already fallen in love with Bacchus Marsh because we would bring our children up here for picnics, for the rivers, and fresh fruit. Our daughter went to Ballarat for university, so we would be quite often travelling backwards and forwards through Bacchus Marsh. When our daughter bought a house here, my husband Bruce and I came up to look at her house and we were having lunch together – I was just sitting and looking at the gum trees and the river and thinking, “I could live here”. And Bruce said: “I could live here”. We had just renovated our home in St Albans thinking we were going to retire there and then we put it on the market and moved here.

Palm Lake lifestyle puts people first Residents of Palm Lake Resort Truganina may ordinarily luxuriate in a carefree lifestyle, but they are also happy to get their hands dirty as contributors to their community. A few weeks ago, sales manager Zoe Ilich-Paul reports, a 23-strong Palm Lake crew volunteered for Clean Up Australia Day.
“For people who like a bit of action, we have an undercover bowling green, an indoor heated pool and spa for aquarobics … plus a fully equipped gymnasium. We even have a personal trainer on board – free to residents – who can organise personalised training schedules.”
“A wonderful effort was put in by the team, including our caretakers Jo and Troy, and we’re proud of and grateful for their splendid contribution to improving grounds surrounding the village. They wound up collecting more than 50 bags of rubbish, with the morning culminating in a yummy barbecue lunch.”
Other fun activities include arts and craft sessions, virtual golf and games of darts, pool or snooker.
Most of the time at Palm Lake Resort is about the luxury of living affordably in world-class facilities, expressly designed for active, mature-age adults. Zoe says there are many activities to keep residents as active or as kicked-back as they may want.
If quiet time is sought, there’s a library with a big selection of books, CDs and videos to browse, and free access to computers, the internet and a printer. And the luxurious 49-seat cinema serves as social hub and place to take visiting grandkids and other family. The hub of the resort is the Paradise Palms Clubhouse, where one free weekly meal per household is provided. It’s also a place to rekindle romances at candlelit tables, or on the dance floor.
Buying into Palm Lake Resort brings financial peace of mind, too, says Zoe. “Residents pay no entry fees and no stamp duty when they move in. “The low fortnightly site fee covers all council rates, garbage disposal and unlimited use of all facilities. And rental assistance may be available for those who qualify through Centrelink.” The final release is now selling, with some great two and threebedroom designs to choose from. Call anytime to organise a tour. Palm Lake Resort, 7 Taronga Road, Truganina. Inquiries: 1800 686 096 or www.palmlakeresort.com.au

Price: $279,000 – $299,000
On a block that has plenty of room to garden and play (about 610 square metres), this property draws the eye, from its manicured outdoor spaces to the tastefully styled interiors. Past a security door, entry is via a carpeted living room at the front of the house, with the first of four bedrooms – the main – to the left. This gets plenty of light, and has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Oak-style floating floors lead to a contemporary kitchen, with dark laminate cabinetry, next to the family-meals zone. Three carpeted and fitted bedrooms are set off from this main hub of the house, as is the main bathroom. Glass sliding doors open from the living zone to a pergola and a gorgeous backyard. Extras are air-conditioning and security shutters, and there is also a double garage with rear access. Everything has been thought of, and everything’s been done.
Multi-paned windows with white shutters on brick, together with exposed timber hardwood cabinetry in the kitchen, create a country-style atmosphere at this great family property in Melton South. The house has three bedrooms, two of which have built-in wardrobes. Hardwood floors lead into an open-plan living area, the kitchen opening out to the family-meals zone. The house is set at an angle on its block, which creates a large yard that has been well kept. There is a garden shed and a carport with drive-through access down one side and an undercover pergola over concrete adjoining. Extras include a split-system, ceiling fans in living areas, and internal glass doors. Close to shops, schools and public transport, this is a great option for families and first home buyers alike.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds the truth really is in the eating ... We’re in Mr Griffiths for the poutine (French fries and cheese curds topped with gravy) – a dish we’ve never before eaten. But we’ve had plenty of loaded fries – and so far as I can tell, the Quebec-derived poutine could be the very first loaded fries. We order the regular poutine – called The Drummondville (small $7). I am perplexed and underwhelmed – the gravy and the curd lumps seem to add nothing to the fries. And the fries themselves seem lacklustre. Bennie loves them – cleaning the basket empty after I’ve grabbed a handful of fries untainted by the toppings. That figures – his eyes invariably light up when he sees the phrase “loaded fries” on a menu. Mine tend to glaze over. My argument is simple: Why ruin fries with toppings that make them soggy? So in fairness to Mr Griffiths, I’d say that even a serve a poutine fan deems of the very highest order would do nothing for me. Mr Griffiths is a newish and welcome addition to Macaulay Road. It’s a cool room, already with a relaxed neighbourhood vibe about it. Beer is big here and the place is done out in Melbourne black. It appears to be a hit – a previous mid-week attempt to try the food came to nothing as the place was packed. If poutine is your thing, there are variations to be had that include the likes of fried chicken, hot sauce, pickles, onion, bacon, maple syrup and more.
MR GRIFFITHS ALIBIS & LIBATIONS A ATIONS Address: 524 Macaulay Road, Kensington Phone: 9372 3978 It stands to reason poutine (not offered by many places in Melbourne) is a stronger selling point here than the burgers (sold by every man and his dog). But as it turns out, our burgers are the highlight of our Saturday lunch – a judgment with which even my poutine-loving son agrees. He loves the crisp ‘n’ crunch of the beautifully cooked chook in his Buffalo chicken burger ($12.50) with its Frank’s red hot, lettuce and ranch sauce. My Bacon G’s burger deluxe ($12.50) is equally impressive with its beef, bacon, tomato, lettuce, pickles, onion and G sauce. And unadvertised cheese. Big statement: This is the best bacon I can recall ever enjoying in a burger – it’s both chewy and crunchy, it’s thick-cut and its flavour imbues almost every mouthful. As Bennie points out, there is nothing extravagant or sophisticated about our burgers. Indeed, at first blush they appeared to be on the plain and modest side. But the truth is in the eating – they win because good ingredients have been done well. SPORT Darley Devils on a heavenly start to the season Darley kept reigning premiers Bacchus Marsh to just three second-half goals to take home the points in their Ballarat Football League clash on Sunday. Both teams entered the match keen for a winning start after watching other sides start their seasons over the past two weekends. Darley Devils lead by a goal at the first break after an even first quarter. The Cobras turned the tables to lead by 11 at the main break with star forward Jarrah Maksymow kicking five first half goals. At half-time it looked like the game would produce a thrilling second half but the Devils had other ideas. They kicked 6.3 to the Cobras six points, to lead by 22 points at the last change. The lead
was a match-winning one, with the Devils winning 13.15 (93)-10.14 (74). Leigh Spiteri kicked five goals for the Devils and was among the best. Brian Graham was best on ground in his first game for the club, and fellow recruit Kyle Docherty provided a handy target up forward. New Devils coach Heath Scotland made a surprise appearance having recovered from knee surgery and proved a handful in the middle in the second half. For the Cobras, Maksymow was the only multiple goalscorer, but he could not add to his five first half goals. Scott Sherlock was the Cobras’ best, along with the usual suspects in Maksymow, Alec
Del Papa and Matt Denham. The Cobras will unveil their premiership flag on Saturday before the grand final rematch against Sunbury Lions. The Devils will face Melton, which is coming off two disappointing losses including Saturday’s game against Sunbury Lions. In dewy conditions, the Bloods kicked just three goals, only one in the second half, in the 8.12 (60)-3.4 (22) loss. Braedan Kight kicked two goals while Tom Button kicked the other. Lachlan Walker was named best in a game the Bloods would like to forget. Melton South will play North Ballarat City on Anzac Day. In more big news for the Panthers, they
announced last week they’d signed another former AFL player. Former Richmond and Sydney ruckman Tom Derickx is expected to play between six to eight games for the Panthers this season, including Anzac Day. He joins Brendan Fevola, Nick Kommer, Mitch Banner and Tayte Pears as former AFL players who have joined the club this year. Co-coach Sean Triplett said it was Derickx’s friendship with Kommer that helped get him to the club. He said the combination of having Derickx and fellow ruckman Ben Sortino would make them hard to match up against. Tara Murray
Rebuilt Rams aim high By Tara Murray Rockbank’s return to Riddell District Netball League A grade competition has been rocky, but the Rams are confident they aren’t far from finding their feet. After failing to get the numbers for an A-grade team last season, the Rams set about revamping their netball program. With new players across all grades and a new coaching group led by Lizzy Masterson, there was plenty of excitement entering the season. The Rams’ first A-grade game ended abruptly when lightning forced the game against Melton Centrals to be called off midway through the third quarter. The Centrals were awarded the win as they were leading 24-10 at the time. On Saturday, the Rams suffered a 52-30 loss to a strong Lancefield line-up. The Tigers led by eight goals at quarter-time and extended the lead at every break. Rockbank A-grade captain Rianne Vining said players had faced a steep learning curve to start the season. “It’s been really good,” she said. “Most of us have come from Anakie. “We’ve fitted in really nicely at Rockbank and it’s a good club. “The aim is to rebuild the club and hopefully in the future we can make finals and possibly premierships.” Vining said they had found the league’s standard so far to be similar to that of the Geelong and District Football League in which much of the side played last season. “I think at the moment we’re very unsettled and the scoreboard hasn’t shown what we can do,” she said. “We’re not playing how I know we can play. Once we sort out a few positions, I think we can hopefully gel. It’s about finding the right combinations.” It wasn’t all bad news on Saturday, with the Rams’ under-19 team getting the club’s first netball win of the season. The C-grade side suffered a one goal loss. In other results, Diggers Rest had a solid win against Woodend-Hesket in a high-scoring game. Missing several players, the Burras still did it with ease for a 70-49 victory. Alicija Marko Rawlings shot 37 goals, while Amy Carroll, who shot 33, was best on court. Riddell was too strong for Sunbury Kangaroos with a 71-37 win. Romsey and Melton Centrals had the week off, with the two sides playing last week, the Redbacks winning 54-40. Macedon and Rupertswood are due to play on Anzac Day. Lancefield’s Paula Broadstock and Rockbank’s Ashlee Bertocci vie for possession. (Shawn Smits) 46 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 25, 2017

Celtic kids clinic a tonic for Spartans Satellite City United had some very special guests earlier this month, with the Melton-based club hosting a clinic run by Scottish soccer powerhouse, Celtic. When Celtic got in touch with the Spartans about hosting the clinic, they weren’t going to say no. Spartans’ secretary Stephanie Moskaluk said the club, which was formed in 2000, was a small one that focused on giving everyone the opportunity to play soccer. She said opportunities such as the Celtic clinic were priceless for the club members. Some Melbourne Victory players also visited the club early this year. Children from across the region participated in the clinic. “We are a small club with approximately 200 juniors, with junior boys and girls teams, a men’s team, a women’s team,” Moskaluk said. “We’re also starting a team for children with special needs. “We are a multicultural club that embraces families in the area. “We have a lot of low-income families and single parents. We’re not just a soccer club – we’re a family. “We teach children how to integrate into the community, life skills and a sense of belonging.” Moskaluk said the club was in talks with Celtics officials and hoped to make the soccer clinics a regular thing. Caroline Springs hits the hockey pitch After a summer of hard work, Caroline Springs hockey teams took to the field for the first time at the weekend. The club, which formed late last year, had significant interest and has been able to field two women’s and one men’s team, along with its junior sides. One of the women’s teams is playing in Hockey Victoria’s Pennant F division, while the other is in Metro B north-west. Both won their first matches at the weekend. The men’s side, playing in pennant G division, lost. Laura Brown is part of a five-woman leadership group across the two women’s sides. Joining her is Melissa Lake, Kathy Jungfer, Holly Azzopardi and Lexi Grant-Taylor. Brown said the club went with a leadership group as opposed to a captain, to give a number of players a voice. “With so many new players it was hard to pick a captain,” she said. “We wanted to share
the responsibility around. “It provides learning opportunities for some people who may not have wanted to captain on their own, but do it with the support of others.” Brown said there had been an influx of players who had decided to return to the sport, which was a massive boost for the club. She said being a new club they didn’t have many expectations heading into the season. “If it ends up in a premiership that would be amazing,” she said. “[But] It’s about getting to know everyone and see how we go. “We’ve got some very talented players in our teams. There’s a few who are a bit rusty having not played the last couple of seasons.” Coach David Gorton asked Brent McMillan to take on the captaincy role. “I’ve played hockey for about 20-odd years. My wife and kids moved across to play with Caroline Springs this season and for me it was more about playing with the family so I made the move too,” McMillan said.
“I was captain of Melton’s second team last season. “They were looking for someone who had a reasonable hockey background to take on the role here.” McMillan said this season was about ensuring they got it right to start with and to help build the foundations of the club for the next 15 to 20 years. “I think we’ll be competitive this year, whether or not we make finals will depend on how we gel together. “I’d like to see us competitive each week.” Tara Murray

Rams turn the style on By Tara Murray After more than 18 months, Rockbank is finally back on the winners’ list in the Riddell District Football League. The Rams hadn’t won a game since July, 2015, so there was plenty of celebrations on Saturday afternoon after they defeated Lancefield. The Rams didn’t just sneak home for the win – they put together a dominant four-quarter performance. They led by 14 points at half-time, but it could have been a lot more if not for poor kicking in front of goal. The third quarter proved to be the match-winner, with the Rams kicking 7.3 to open up a 50-point lead heading into the last quarter. Neither side scored a goal in the final quarter, but the Rams had already done enough to secure a 10.17 (77)-3.8 (26) victory. Co-coach Leigh Sporle said the feeling in the rooms after the game was one of elation. “They played four quarters of good football,” he said. “There wasn’t a lot of goals kicked in the last quarter, but the pressure from the forward line and the way the guys worked across the game was what we were after. “A lot of goals we missed, in hindsight, I think we should have got, but the way the boys played was pleasing. “It shows things we have implemented are working.” Jake Warwick and Sporle kicked two goals each. Sporle arrived at the ground Saturday not expecting to play. “It wasn’t an ideal situation,” he said. “Harley Cameron pulled out just before the game. Credit to him to make that decision. “We thought about having a twos player double-up. Hopefully, Harley returns next week and can be part of a win very soon.” Tom Evans, along with brothers Jordan and Mitchell Baumgartner, were among the standouts for the Rams. Sporle said it would be tough at selection this week with everyone having played a role in the victory. He said the win was reward for the players, coaches, committee members and supporters who had stuck by the club in tough times. “The most pleasing thing is the boys kept returning when they could have gone elsewhere,” he said. The Rams are 1-1 after the first two rounds. They could have been 2-0, having had chances against Melton Centrals in round one. “We didn’t take a lot out of the first game with the wet conditions,” he said. “We’ve got such a great bunch of blokes. We know where we sit. We’ve still got a long way to go.” The Rams will face Rupertswood on Saturday. Sporle said the club would have a

Riddell’s Mick Allen and Bacchus Marsh’s Madushanka Ekanayaka have been named in the Central Highlands Region team of the year. Allen, in his first season with Riddell, was named captain of the rep team and one of the opening batsmen while Ekanayaka was one of four bowlers named.

Melton Thoroughbreds remain without a win in Big V men’s division 1 after a big loss to Keysborough on Sunday. The Thoroughbreds trailed early and fell further behind in every quarter to lose 95-76. Ivan Harris top scored with 20 points for the Thoroughbreds.
TAC Cup
Western Jets’ took home the points after a thrilling TAC Cup match against Gippsland Power. Both sides struggled in front of goal, with the Jets having a massive 13 scoring shots in the first quarter but converting just three. The Jets came from 21 points down at three-quarter time to win 9.20 (74)-9.16 (70). Judah Dundon was best on ground.
Netball
Bacchus Marsh came from behind to win its season opener against Darley in the Ballarat Netball League on Sunday. After trailing at every break, the Cobras shot 11 goals to six in the final quarter to win 36-34. Madeline Hodgson shot 24 goals from 28 attempts in a best-on-court performance. In a disappointing round two outcome for Melton, it lost 79-15 to Sunbury Lions on Saturday.
EDFL
Hillside remains undefeated after a hard-fought win against East Keilor in Essendon District Football League division 1. Scores were level at half-time before the Sharks took the lead in the third quarter, eventually winning 8.16 (64)-7.11 (53). In division 2, Burnside Heights suffered a 105-point loss to Coburg Districts. The Lions were too strong from the outset winning, 25.15 (165)-9.6 (60).

orth of the Tropic of Capricorn you’ll note how many four-wheel-drives carry two spare wheels. They do this out of bitter experience. So it amazes me how many 4WDs are supplied with no spare at all. This one gets a tyre repair kit. Good luck with that when you limp into the Rabbit Flat roadhouse to find that it closed years ago. Otherwise, the Q7 is a good thing. It feels much smaller than it is, but you’re always aware that it’s heavy, especially with mild body roll through tight corners. Despite this it clings like a limpet and always feels secure. The steering is beautifully weighted and the controls are comprehensive. You can adjust the suspension through several settings, but for long trips through the bush the comfort setting is terrific giving a superb ride. You can have the same turbo diesel motor tuned to 200 kilowatts for an extra $8000, or $200 a kilowatt. I don’t think it’s worth it because, off the mark or overtaking, this one delivers in spades and is beautifully matched to the eight-speed auto.
his is a very comfortable, well-appointed SUV with excellent fit and finish, but the dash, instruments and interior are overly masculine. There’s toughness here, an attitude that you don’t find in the calmer, more welcoming lines of a Mercedes or a BMW. I guess I’d get used to it but I’d always be aware of it. What I most liked was the third row of seats that unfold and retract with the touch of a button. They’re definitely kid-sized but for kids they’re comfortable and access is pretty good. When folded away they make for a fairly high cargo floor but it’s a generous space and the cargo door is electronically operated. The navigation is by Google and operates with imagery from Google Earth, so if you like looking at rooftops as you drive by it’s a treat. I guess there’s a setting for normal mapping but I couldn’t find it. The reversing camera and surround view parking cameras (optional at $1300) are among the best I’ve used and make reverse parking far easier despite the size of the car.
