Help for kids in crisis By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton’s homeless young people have been given hope with the state government committing $5.4 million over the next four years to fund a crisis response centre in the area. The facility, to be run by homelessness service Hope Street, will accommodate more than 100 young people across each year. But the organisation expects the effects to be even farther-reaching – the money will also be used to fund a mobile outreach service for young people at risk of homelessness. Once the funding is released, Hope Street expects the mobile outreach service to be up and running within a month. Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said she was delighted. Ms Bennett said the organisation would not have been able to fund the cost of a crisis centre without the state government support.

Hillside teen on track for pageant Zara Keca is used to out-performing her competitors on the athletics track, but the record-breaking hurdler and long jumper admits she was shocked when she was one of 15 young women chosen as finalists in the preliminary showdown for Miss World Victoria. “I certainly didn’t expect it,” she said. The Hillside teenager and former Lakeview Secondary College student hopes to be crowned Miss Victoria at the final on June 2. The 18-year-old said the competition was a great way to raise money for Variety Australia, a charity that helps sick kids or children with special needs that has provided invaluable support for her 22-year-old sister, Natalie. “We see there is a need for this in the City of Melton,” Ms Bennett said. “The need is high and the community is very keen and very anxious to see this up and running soon.” Ms Bennett said the crisis response centre and mobile outreach service were desperately needed in Melton, with the closest existing facility more than 30 kilometres away. At present, the organisation offers only transitional housing – up to two years – for young people in a centre with 16 beds. “We’ll be able to provide young people with, not just a bed, but high-quality, one-to-one tailored support and assistance,” Ms Bennett said. “This will increase their chances of remaining engaged in school, remaining connected to their local community, remaining connected to their extended family and remaining connected to employment and training. “When we’re able to provide that type of support … they have a much better chance of successfully being diverted from [long-term] homelessness.” A government spokeswoman said the Hope Street First Response Youth Service will be a crucial support for young people experiencing homelessness in the Melton area. “It will provide both the immediate accommodation but also the wrap around help to get young people out, and stay out, of crisis.”

Budget plan angers councillors By Sumeyya Ilanbey Several Moorabool councillors have slammed the council’s 2017-18 draft budget, arguing their communities have been short-changed. The council has allocated $15 million in the draft budget for its capital works program, including $5 million on improving roads across the municipality. Rates will rise an average of two per cent, in line with the state government cap. The budget includes $50,000 for the Ballan Recreation Reserve masterplan, $50,000 for a Moorabool aquatic and splash park strategy and $25,000 for a traffic management study
of Bacchus Marsh. But Woodlands ward’s Pat Toohey told last week’s council meeting the draft budget failed to recognise some of the significant issues facing small towns. “The Greendale community, for example, is one of our largest small town communities, yet they have no community facilities,” Cr Toohey said. “A lot of people are using [the Greendale reserve] and the little block of toilets … does not cater to the needs of that community. We have to make priority decisions – what are the important things? “We can no longer continue to ignore that community down there.”
He said better toilet facilities at one of the municipality’s major reserves should be “paramount”. During a fiery debate, Central Moorabool ward’s Paul Tatchell criticised the draft budget, saying he would not approve it in its current form. “Every time I want to do something for my community, it has to come out of my ward fund,” Cr Tatchell said. “I’ve been bloody generous in this council for the past five years … my people don’t get a two per cent rate rise. I’ve got people who have 25 per cent, 20 per cent rate increases … I’ve got people in the township who get 11 and 12 per
cent because they’re in some growth boundary. Being nice in here doesn’t work. Come to a council meeting … because they [council officers] don’t listen to me.” Cr John Keogh argued an additional $50,000 should be allocated for planting trees across the municipality, while Cr Jarrod Bingham raised concerns that councillors weren’t given enough time to scrutinise the draft budget’s proposals. Councillors Tom Sullivan, Pat Toohey and David Edwards voted in favour of the budget, with the mayor using his casting vote. Cr Tonia Dudzik was absent. The draft budget, as well as the draft council plan, is available for comment until June 6.
Carpark fix on the way in Melton West Potential solutions to stop illegal parking in a Melton West street will be put up for public consultation. Melton council will consult Stirling Terrace residents and the communities of nearby Catholic Regional College and St Catherine’s Primary School to find a solution to the increasing number of drivers illegally parking on the street. Local residents claim the illegal parkers have blocked access to their driveways and the street. At last week’s council meeting, an officer’s report stated parents were dropping off and picking up children at Stirling Terrace, away from “congested” Bulmans Road, where the school’s main entrances are located. But this was causing problems with cars parking too close to the road bend or having cars parking on both sides of the road. Officers recommended that the council allocate $30,000 in this year’s budget to construct 13 indented parking bays in Stirling Terrace. “This project will allow vehicles to park off the street and not block the roadway, providing extra carparking for parents, and take congestion away from Bulmans Road,” the report stated. Councillors agreed to set aside the funds but said residents and the school community should first be consulted about what solutions they would prefer. Cr Michelle Mendes said community consultation was paramount.

Garden’s bounty unearthed Finding out about indigenous plants, caring for a mini-eucalyptus tree or tapping into your inner botanist – there’s much to discover at one of Melton’s hidden gems. The Melton Botanic Garden will be part of this year’s national botanic garden open day later this month, with the community getting a chance to go on free guided tours of the garden, have their faces painted or “simply appreciate the plants”.
Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden president John Bentley said that with dwindling residential garden sizes, the open day would include tips on plants that people could grow in small spaces. “Plants are essential to life,” Mr Bentley said. “Without plants we wouldn’t exist because our whole food chain is based on them. “With small garden spaces and big concreted areas, people are losing their connection to

Council fury at budget snub Melton and Moorabool councils have slammed last week’s state government budget for its “glaring omissions” of vital infrastructure funding for the neighbouring municipalities. The Andrews government unveiled its 2017-18 budget last Tuesday, announcing a spending splurge in health, education, public transport and domestic violence services. But Melton and Moorabool all but missed out on the cash splash, with the government ignoring many items on the councils’ wish lists. Moorabool mayor David Edwards said he couldn’t understand why the shire didn’t receive any recognition in a “record spending budget”. The state government did not fund any new projects in Moorabool in the budget. “We have trawled through the budget, to no avail, hoping that the strong advocacy we had undertaken would result in funding for a corridor study for an eastern bypass of Bacchus Marsh and also provide for stage one works to alleviate the serious traffic congestion on Gisborne/Grant Street,” Cr Edwards said. “Other key projects such as the Parwan employment precinct, upgrade of sporting facilities and the Racecourse Reserve, and sewerage for Bungaree and Wallace, have also not made the grade.” Melton fared slightly better, with the state government announcing it would set aside funding for the long-awaited primary school in the booming suburb Burnside and to acquire land for a new school in Eynesbury.
Other new Melton projects being funded in this year’s budget include an SES unit for Caroline Springs, three parks at Kororoit Creek and land for a new ambulance station at Melton. But the state government announced it would slash in half the Growing Suburbs Fund, which helped outer suburban councils build infrastructure.
‘‘
We have trawled through the budget, to no avail

- David Edwards
There was also no commitments for the Ferris Road grade separations or the Toolern train station, which Melton council identified as being top-priority projects. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said that while she was pleased with the education announcements, she was disappointed with the government’s decision to halve the Growing Suburbs Fund and not fund any transport projects. She said the council’s needs had not diminished. “In fact, the gap only continues to grow,” she said. “The reduction in funding available means it will take much longer to bridge that gap.” State treasurer Tim Pallas said the government was getting “a bit concerned about the quality of the offerings” from councils wanting funding through the Growing Suburbs Fund.
KATHRYN LONG WITH KOBY AND BLAKE
Take time for mothers If there’s one thing Kathryn Long has learnt from her own mum, it’s to spend as much time with her children as she can. “Spend time and not money,” Ms Long says. She’ll be celebrating Mother’s Day with her three beautiful children – Nessa, 5, Koby, 3, and Blake, 1 – this weekend. But she’ll start the morning at the Alexandra Gardens in Melbourne’s CBD to raise money for breast cancer research.

No change on cop station hours By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton’s top cop has categorically ruled out extending the opening hours of the Caroline Springs police station, even though the area will receive an extra 16 police officers in the next 12 months. Inspector Kathy Rudkins said any extension to the hours of the police station would come at a cost to frontline policing, which she described as being “far better” for community safety. Inspector Rudkins’ comments follow calls from the state opposition to have the doors of
the Caroline Springs police station open 24 hours. Opposition police spokesman Edward O’Donohue told Star Weekly many concerned locals continued to contact him about the station’s opening hours. With the extra police being deployed to the Melton police service area, Mr O’Donohue said there would be room to extend the opening hours of the Caroline Springs station without compromising frontline policing. “Just going back to the history of Caroline Springs, there’s been quite a lot of citizen
patrols gaining traction and calls for extended hours of the police station,” he said. “There’s no doubt police stations serve an important function as a sanctuary [for victims of crime]. “I think the community wants to see the police station open [for longer hours], as well as more foot patrols and a more visible police presence.” Inspector Rudkins said victims of crime were never encouraged to attend a police station if they were in danger. Instead, she said, they should call triple-0 and wait for the nearest police car to be dispatched.
“If we have more cars out on the roads, instead of having police manning stations, we’ll have a better chance of responding in a timely manner,” she said. “Even with the addition of the 16 police officers, the hours of the Caroline Springs station will not be extended.” Inspector Rudkins said she was in the process of organising a community safety forum for later this month, at which people will be invited to raise their concerns and speak with local police officers about the hours of the Caroline Springs police station.
On a mission to smile When June Adamson’s husband died six years ago, life became very lonely for the Brookfield woman. She was withdrawn, socially isolated and just “a bit depressed”. “I didn’t like it at all,” the 77-year-old said. Three years ago, Ms Adamson joined Wesley Mission’s social support programs, which connect older people with volunteers so they can maintain their passions and communities. Life’s been on the mend ever since – Ms Adamson has made new friends, visited new places and reached new highs. “It’s made my life a whole lot better,” she said. “I was so lonely, but when [the Wesley Mission volunteers] come, they always have a smile on their face and they’ll do anything for you.” Ms Adamson’s story is featured in the organisation’s new short film, which is aimed at shining a light on older Victorians who experience social isolation.
Wesley Mission chief operating officer Raelene Thompson said its social support programs enabled older people to remain independent. “As our ageing population continues to grow, we can expect more people to remain in their own home into their later years, which is wonderful – as long as people are able to stay connected and involved in their communities and activities they love doing,” she said. “As people get older, loneliness can become more and more familiar as friends are lost and other factors – like poor health, families moving and restricted mobility – can impact on people’s ability to get out and about and spend time with others.” To volunteer with the organisation, or find out more about the social support programs, call 13 93 75. When Natalie Bui took over Quest Caroline Springs five years ago, she set herself some ambitious goals. By year three, she felt ready to showcase her achievements, and hopefully win an accolade, at Melton council’s Business Excellence Awards. That year, Quest Caroline Springs won awards in the hospitality and tourism, sustainability and business of the year categories. A year later, Ms Bui entered the awards again and won in hospitality and tourism, mayoral achievement and business. “It definitely boosted our confidence,” Ms Bui said. “But it also just re-affirmed that we can put something back into the community and get recognised for it.” Ms Bui said that this year she wanted to challenge herself a bit more, and had decided
to sponsor the awards and act as a mentor for other local businesses. “My main goal in having my own business was not just to tick off the goals of what I want to achieve, but what can I do to help others along the way,” she said. A Melton council spokeswoman encouraged all small business owners to nominate themselves for an award, or for community members to nominate worthy businesses. She said going through the nomination process was a valuable opportunity. “Simply by filling out the application questions, business owners become more aware of their strength and gaps,” she said. Nod for five-storey complex By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton councillors have given the green light to a five-storey development – which will include a medical centre, childcare centre, offices, restaurants and 74 housing units – in the heart of Caroline Springs. Once construction is completed, applicant Egg Architects expects the medical centre to have 15 general practitioners, the childcare centre to accommodate up to 120 children, and there will be 13 office spaces on the ground floor.
The application states there will be 63 two-bedroom apartments and 11 three-bedroom apartments, on floors one-four. The fourth floor will also have a restaurant, with the basement reserved for 198 car parking spaces. Council received only one objection to the application, citing traffic congestion and inadequate car parking spaces. But council officers dismissed this concern, saying traffic congestion could be mitigated by restricting the hours of the restaurant and noting the roundabout at The Crossing and
Caroline Springs Boulevard intersection was slated for an upgrade. While preliminary design works have been started, council officers said they weren’t sure when construction would begin. “The purpose of restricting hours is to ensure that reduction in car parking does not impact on the amenity of the immediate surrounding area [i.e. the hours of operation for the rooftop restaurant would be generally outside of the peak drop-off and pick-up times of the childcare centre],” a report presented at last week’s council meeting stated.
The hours of the childcare centre have also been restricted to between 6am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. Officers said the application was consistent with what council was trying to achieve in the Caroline Springs town centre, and the state planning department’s policy to encourage housing diversity and affordability, and an increased number of houses in and around activity centres. The applicant will also need to apply to the education department for a permit for the childcare centre.

MY PLACE Robyn McKean was born with familial spastic paraparesis, which adversely affects her mobility. But she says having a disability should not stop anyone from achieving their dreams. She speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey. I live in Ballan, I’m involved with the Greendale fire brigade as a non-active member and I’m a member of the Greendale Support Group. We’ve been in this house for two years. What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool? It’s quiet and the people are nice. We keep moving back to Ballan because it’s closer to the doctors and more convenient. What would you change about the area if you could? It’s becoming a lot busier – I know every town is getting busy. But there are a lot of units being built on small blocks of land. I just think that having large blocks of land with one house is much better for the [neighbourhood characteristics]. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool? I like to go to Zest Cafe. I suppose I also just like to spend time at the Greendale fire brigade – that’s where I spend most of my time. Because of my physical disability, I sometimes find it hard to go to places that aren’t disabilityfriendly.
Why did you decide to join the Greendale fire brigade? We were living in Greendale. It was a way for me to get to know the people and the community. The members there are really great; they’re a lovely bunch of people. My disability has never been an issue there and they’ve always encouraged me to fulfill my roles. You were recently awarded a CFA Inspire award, which celebrates the exceptional achievement of CFA volunteers with a disability. How do you feel about receiving this award? It was just wonderful. It was really great that people, with whatever degree of disability, were acknowledged. It was a real encouragement to continue doing what I enjoy in life. It gives you confidence … and after the awards, it made me think that even if you can’t do everything, have a jolly good go. What would your advice be to others who might view disability as stopping them from doing what they want to? Get up every day and do the best you can. And, hopefully, with the help of others, you can join a group you’re interested in – you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve.

Youth award caps an inspiring journey When Poppe-Simone Sakr joined Special Olympics Victoria 18 months ago, she didn’t realise how much she could achieve in such a short amount of time. She was one of 120 Australian athletes – and the youngest on the team – competing in the Special Olympics Trans-Tasman tournament last year. She competed in the 50m freestyle, breasktstroke, backstroke and relay events, winning gold in breaststroke and relay. And last month, the Melton West teen received the top gong at Melton council’s youth awards night for “continually showing determination in pursuit of her goals, including competing in the Special Olympics”. Poppe-Simone said she was “really surprised” at receiving the Youth Advisory Council Honours award. “It makes me very proud, and I feel so honoured,” she said. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey congratulated the 34 award winners and 28 grant recipients. She said they were “inspiring examples” of the great work young people in the municipality are doing. “Council is committed to working to enhance leadership in our local community and these awards and grants are vital to our investment in the future,” Cr Ramsey said. “Young people make up a large proportion of our community and the … awards and grants are a great way to encourage them.” Sumeyya Ilanbey Poppe-Simone with her award. Icy pole boost for Tilly By Ewen McRae Lindsay Barber has braved freezing cold, treacherous winds and deadly ravines, but would do it all again to help a Taylors Lakes girl. Mr Barber recently returned from a trek to the North Pole he undertook to raise money for six-year-old Tilly Wilkes and the EB Research Foundation. Tilly was born with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic condition in which the body is missing the functioning protein that binds skin together, causing it to blister at the slightest touch. It has been likened to living with third degree burns. Mr Barber said he wanted to raise money for a charity on his trek and was immediately touched when he heard about Tilly and the EB Foundation. “I wanted to give the trip a purpose outside of being self-fulfilling for me,” he said. “As soon as I saw what those kids go through and how terrible the disease is, I knew it was the charity to link in with. “So we got Tilly to write a letter to Santa and I delivered that. There’s an actual letterbox up there so we were able to personalise the trip for Tilly.” Mr Barber, who has thrown himself into challenges ranging from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to swimming on the Cinque Terre coast in Italy, raised $48,000 for the foundation, making the nine months of training and preparation for the trek all worthwhile. The 110-kilometre trek took his crew six days to complete, with plenty of obstacles to overcome on the way. “It’s totally different from what you would expect because you’re on the ice, not terra firma,” he said. “There’s one to two metres of pack ice, and then the snow coverage can be

from 20 to 500 millimetres. No vegetation, 24-hour daylight, some days only 200 metres visability and temperatures down to minus 28. “We had a bear come into our campsite. Our guide – who’s been guiding since 2005 – said he’d never encountered a bear, but we got one. “And we were just a couple of miles from the pole when we got a call saying there was a crack in the ice on the runway back at the base and they’d be coming to get us, so we had to push on
quickly just to make sure we made it. It’s hard to explain what it’s like. It’s not like climbing a mountain when you get to the summit and you know you’ve done it. “The North Pole is exactly the same terrain we’d seen for the past five days, so it’s a very different feeling.” Donations to the Mr Barber’s EB Foundation effort can be made at donate.grassrootz.com/ ebresearch/my-north-pole-challenge.

Boulevard plan gets big tick A “derelict” site at Caroline Springs will soon be demolished to make way for two multi-storey developments in a bid to “bring glory” to the suburb. The site at 1-7 Caroline Springs Boulevard currently has a building, clocktower and carparking, but Melton councillors have described the site, which is a gateway to Caroline Springs, as an eyesore. They unanimously voted to approve two multi-storey developments that will have a range of retail, food and drink premises, despite council officers describing the application as an “over-development of the site”. Cr Kathy Majdlik said this would be a “great” development for the community. “At the moment, it’s a derelict site – quite an eyesore – at the entrance of Caroline Springs,” she said. “ I think this will … be a success for our community.” Cr Lara Carli described the development as “spectacular”, saying it would open employment opportunities for residents. The application received one objection, with three signatories citing “excessive scale” of the building, littering in carparking, noise, increased traffic and odour from commercial bins. In their report presented at last week’s council meeting, officers raised concerns about the development’s potential to becoming a neighbourhood shopping centre. Sumeyya Ilanbey

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir revisits hot jam doughnuts – a street food tradition Like everyone else, I loved Nick and his Olympic Doughnuts. Or rather, in this case, I really loved the idea of Nick and his doughnuts – that he was and is such a legend, and that Olympic Doughnuts was such a Footscray institution, even surviving the revamp of Footscray station. I thought the doughnuts were OK, but found the jam they were stuffed with amounting to not much more than, well, syrup. This, as a pal has pointed out to me, is a ridiculous attitude to hold. She’s right – this was not your hipster cafe selling vanilla cream-stuffed doughnuts for $5. These were your street-food doughnuts – cheap, fresh and hot. Well now, Nick has retired – and much to the community’s widespread delight, a new doughnut operation has taken up the space at the station. So I take it for a spin. The doughnuts are … cheap, fresh and hot – although the jam is, well, syrup. Or perhaps it is the rather high cooking heat that transforms any jam into … sticky lava. It matters not. I do good through a deal that provides me two doughnuts and a pretty good coffee for $5. And on a sunny Indian summer’s afternoon, the station plaza has become a fine place to linger a while, watching the ebb and flow. There’s a bench seat directly opposite the doughnut shop – the convenience store next door even had a couple of tables and chairs out.
FOOTSCRAY DOUGHTNUTS & COFFEE Footscray Station
Much commentary, some of it fuelled by recent vandalism, has surrounded speculation that Footscray is well on its way – through gentrification and hipsterisation – of becoming a Fitzroy clone. Accompanied by my doughnuts and coffee at spotty, gritty Footscray central, such a scenario seems preposterous. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

Another is the family-meals area, that has lovely floorboards complementing the white wall paint (seen throughout) and the timber-framed bifolds to a gabled pergola sitting above pavers. The kitchen is a cracker. It has a stack of customised white cabinetry, charcoal stone benches, glass splashback, 900mm induction cooktop, an underbench electric oven and concealed dishwasher. A glass-roof window above the sink is a
feature. The big laundry also has stone benchtops. The four good-sized bedrooms have built-in robes and share two bathrooms, the en suite with a tub. Ducted heating and cooling take care of indoor climate control. Out back, beyond the pergola, there’s an in-ground salt pool rimmed with pavers extending to the encircling safety fence. Bears break the drought By Tara Murray It was a moment to saviour on Saturday as Burnside Heights returned to the Essendon District Football League division 2 winners’ list for the first time since 2015. Wins have been few and far between for the Bears, who before Saturday had won just three matches since fielding a senior team in 2014. Bears president Justin Peagram was a relieved man on Sunday. “It’s reward for all the hard work and effort that has been put in, especially by Aidan Stott and the rest of the coaching group. “The players have put in a lot of hard work too. Hopefully they believe they can do it now.” Peagram said they had been building towards Saturday’s win. They lost after the siren to East Sunbury in round one, and besides one quarter in the rest of their matches they had been competitive. On Saturday against Keilor Park it was the battle of the win-less sides. The Bears started the better of the two and they maintained the momentum all day. In the end the Bears won easily, 11.9 (75)-8.9 (57). Peagram said they had focused on self-belief heading into the game. “We controlled the game for four quarters,” he said. “Credit to Keilor Park, they fought it out to the end, kicking a couple of late goals. “The work put in by the boys just clicked and they believed they could do it. “I was really happy they knew the words to the song after the game.”
Josh Covelli kicked four goals for the Bears, while Anthony Fawcus and Stephen Kenrick kicked three goals apiece. Brett Thomas was named the best for the Devils. Peagram said it was a team effort across the ground and he was pleased with the performances of some of the younger players such as Ashley Neal, Jack Agius and Jordan Defilippis. “Opposition sides have actually said we can match it with them. Hopefully we get confidence out of Saturday that we can do it.” In premier division, Keilor let slip a win against Maribyrnong Park. The Blues led for most of the day, but gave up the lead late, losing 14.16 (100)-13.9 (87). In division 1, Hillside lost its first game of the season, going down to Westmeadows. The Sharks started well but were overrun by the Tigers, who won 16.10 (106)-13.10 (88). Taylors Lakes won its third game of the season, with a 39-point win against East Keilor.
Burnside Heights’ Anthony Fawcus takes a mark up forward. (Damian Visentini)

45 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 9, 2017
SPORT Centrals new game plan is getting results Melton Centrals’ early claims for the most improved team in the Riddell District Football League have been bolstered with a win against Broadford on Saturday. The win was Centrals’ third in the first four rounds and they were more than competitive in their only loss against Romsey. Centrals secured its third win of the season, with a comfortable 21.9 (135)-11.7 (73). Last season Centrals won just two matches, both against Rockbank, which failed to win a game. For first-year Centrals coach Mathew Sproule the results are invigorating the playing group. “We are playing some pretty good footy and improving every week,” he said. “We’ve been
doing things well and getting the results we deserve. The effort is fantastic and it helps with the buy-in with what we’ve been trying to do. “We’re keeping things pretty simple and we’re playing how we want to play.” Despite entering the game full of confidence and as favourites at the weekend, Centrals focused on continuing their game plan. “It was another opportunity to keep improving and win another game,” Sproule said. “Ten minutes into the second quarter we kicked six goals in a row and took control of the game. “The third quarter we had a 10-minute break with an injured player, but the boys responded well and finished off the game well.”
Sproule said Linton Hogan was taken to hospital with a neck injury in the incident which halted play in the third quarter, but was not seriously injured. He said the club would ask the league to investigate the incident. Stuart Lowe, one of three ruckmen the Centrals are playing, kicked four goals and spent most of the game up forward. Jared Scott also kicked four goals. Samuel Apineru and Trent Kreeck were best on ground. Sproule said Centrals are aware the competition will get harder in the coming weeks with games against some of the top sides. “We’re not getting ahead of ourselves,” Sproule said.
“We still have a long way to go and this is a chance to test ourselves. Romsey was in front of the Sunbury Kangaroos for three quarters and they defeated Diggers Rest. We stuck with Romsey for most of our game. “As long as we play well we’ll be competitive. It’s a tough month ahead.” In other RDFL games, Diggers Rest suffered its first loss of the season in a upset result against Romsey. In a low-scoring affair, the Redbacks defeated the Burras 6.11 (47)-6.5 (41). Rockbank was competitive against Wallan for most of its match, but still suffered a 17.12 (114)-8.6 (54) loss. Melton not losing heart By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds are without a win in Big V men’s division 1 basketball, but the players reckon they’re getting close. Having been at the top end of the ladder in the past couple of years, the Thoroughbreds have lost their first six games in a dramatic turnaround of form. First-year Thoroughbreds coach John Allison said the season’s start had been frustrating. “It has been very tough,” he said. “Some of the losses have been the ball not falling our way late in games. “It’s been really frustrating as we believe we’ve been in most of the games. “I don’t feel we are that far away. We need to get that one win and hopefully it’ll turn into two or three quickly.

Mustangs build on youth
We’ve got kids that are capable, but they lack the experience

- John Allison
“Everyone still believes we can do it.” It was a familiar story again on Sunday for the Thoroughbreds, who lost to Keilor Thunder, 82-75. Returning to the court after having a bye the previous weekend, the Thoroughbreds were within four points with a minute remaining, but couldn’t get the all important baskets to take the lead. Ten points was the biggest margin for either side, in what was a close match. Ivan Harris top-scored for the Thoroughbreds with 21, Billy Feben chipping in with 17. The loss was a big improvement on the side’s first-round match with the Thunder, which it lost by 35 points. Allison said before the game the Thoroughbreds were looking to redeem themselves after that performance. He said the players knew they had the talent to get wins and that it was just a matter of putting it all together. Allison refuses to blame missing players for the results. “We need to get everyone back on the same page,” he said. “We had a good pre-season game and went to a tournament in Ballarat and gelled really well. “We’ve got kids that are capable, but they lack the experience to get it done. The game craft isn’t there – they’ve got to get experience and learn.” One of the younger players getting opportunities is Billy Feben, who is averaging nearly 15 points a game, “Billy has always been good,” Allison said. “He was playing behind Jeff Crowe who has 46 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 9, 2017

left. We knew that he had the skills … now he’s getting the opportunities.” The Thoroughbreds youth league men’s side also suffered a close loss on Sunday. The Thoroughbrds fought back after a tough start to the game, outscoring the Casey
Cavaliers 57-43 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough in the 100-96 loss. Broden Collins, Fernando Rios-Rodriguez and Koby Skenderis all scored at least 20 points. The Thoroughbreds are sitting in ninth on the youth league division 2 ladder.
Melton Hockey Club is working on this season as a base for the future. With several off season departures and a change of coaches, the club is looking at a fresh start. Jason Knight and Scott McLaren have taken charge of the women’s program this season. They have previously played together for the men’s side. Knight steps up to the role having been involved with coaching juniors. McLaren coached the men’s side for six years. Knight said he was loving the challenge of the older age groups. “I was coaching under-14s last year,” he said. “It’s a bit of a change having helped the juniors the last five years. I had some success there. “I want to bring through what I learnt with the juniors into the seniors. I want to bring cohesion and a culture of team-orientated success.” Knight said there was a focus on youth this season, and several players would be given the opportunity to move up. “The core group of players are still here,” he said. “There’s lots of juniors who are being exposed to a high level of competition. The next two to three years it’s a renewed focus on developing players and pushing every player to their potential.” It’s been a tough start to the season for the Mustangs in Vic Premier League 2. Facing the undefeated Werribee on Saturday, the Mustangs were on the wrong end of a one-sided match, losing 16-0. The Mustangs have conceded 32 goals in their first three matches. Tara Murray

Devils make a point By Tara Murray A sign of a good team is when they win when not playing well – and Darley did exactly that on Saturday in the Ballarat Football League. The Devils faced a fired-up Sunbury Lions, who weren’t going to let the them walk away with an easy win. The Lions led for much of the game while the Devils hung in there and hit the front at just the right time to win 10.13 (73)-11.6 (72). Devils coach Heath Scotland said he had seen signs in the lead-up to the game that his players weren’t completely “on”. “I thought we looked sluggish at training and it came across into the game,” he said. “[All] credit to Sunbury. “Their stoppage work and contested ball had them on top. Kova [David Kovacevic] was giving them first use of the ball.” Despite not playing well, there were plenty of good signs for the Devils to come out of the match – they still managed to get the win and they continued to fight when undermanned. Chris Graham missed the match through suspension, while Matt Inglis was a late withdrawal. “We just got out of jail,” Scotland said. “It’s definitely a positive out of yesterday when a lot of players were down and we got the win. “It didn’t help when we had a player [Kyle Docherty] sent from the ground – at that stage Sunbury were 20 points up. “It’s the second time in as many rounds. We had two players get sent off against Melton. “We’ve been pretty lucky to get away with wins being a man down. It can’t happen every week.” Docherty kicked three goals for the Devils with Scotland and Harley Inglis kicking two each. Dan Roy was the best for the Devils. Leigh Spiteri and Scotland were also prominent. The Devils enter the interleague break sitting 3-0 after wins against Bacchus Marsh, Melton and the Lions. Scotland said the good start to the season was just the beginning. “There’s still a lot of improvement to come if we’re to keep winning,” he said. “We’ll freshen up and reset for the challenge against Sebastopol.” In other matches, Melton recorded its first win of the season by defeating Ballarat. The Bloods came from behind at half-time to win 15.9 (99)-12.6 (78). Dyson Stevens kicked three goals in a best-on-ground performance for the Bloods. Melton South returned to the winners’ list by beating Sebastopol under lights. Mitchell Banner kicked seven goals in a best-on-ground performance for the Panthers in the 16.15 (111)-6.8 (44) win. Brendan Fevola kicked four goals.

Recruits helping Cobras make the grade
Donna Yeatman has made an immediate impact for Bacchus Marsh. (Shawn Smits)
The Bacchus Marsh women’s football side appears to be putting a slow off season behind it. A team that was struggling for players early on has brought in several recruits in recent weeks and they appear to be making their mark. The Cobras started the season with a loss to Sunbury Kangaroos, but were competitive. On Saturday, in the second round of the grading games, they beat Redan 9.5 (59)-2.1 (13). Madalyn Clarke kicked six goals to be best on ground, along with Melissa Halliday and Donna Yeatman. A decision on which division teams will contest is expected this week. The Cobras are expected to play in division two of the AFL Goldfields women’s competition.
Team manager Rod Bertram said the Cobras were aiming for a competitive season. “We lost a few players last year and we’ve now gained a few new players,” he said. “The numbers are improving after they looked shaky at the start.” This is the third year the Cobras have had a women’s side. The team is coached by Hayley Gossow, who spent time with Collingwood’s AFLW side as an assistant coach. Bertram said while the Cobras would like to make the finals, as they have in the past two years, it wasn’t the main aim of the senior side. “We’re still relatively new and have players still learning the game,” he said. He said two of the new players, Elise Korteman and Yeatman, had impressed in the first two games.
The Cobras have two players in Geelong’s VFL women’s side, Emily Crawford and Abbey Bertram. Bertram said they had made a focus of trying to get the girls’ side involved with the women’s team, including scheduling junior games before the women’s matches. In other senior women’s action, Melton Centrals had a tough day against early division 1 premiership favourites North Geelong Magpies. Centrals failed to score in the 20.20 (150)-0.0 (0) loss. In youth girls, Melton Centrals defeated Bacchus Marsh 11.16 (82)-1.2 (8). Western Jets representative Emmerson Hitch kicked four goals for Centrals in a best-on-ground performance.
