Family rebuilds hope By Esther Lauaki An Eynesbury family has learned the hard way to “do their homework” before hiring a tradesman. Phil and Samantha Trenerry have been left out of pocket more than $10,000 after a year-long dispute with a contractor that wound up at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The Trenerrys told Star Weekly they wanted others to learn from their experience. In 2015, the couple enlisted a contractor to build a backyard deck to improve accessibility for their nine-year-old son, Cadel who has a disability and is wheelchair-bound. “The deck was important because it allowed us to take Cadel outside,” Mr Trenerry said. “He’s in a wheelchair and there’s no other way for us to utilise the backyard with Cadel. We’ve planted a native garden because he loves sitting outside and looking at the local birds that come in.” Cadel was born premature and has spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus and chronic epilepsy and is intellectually disabled. When the Trenerrys discovered that the contractor was unregistered, they pulled the plug on the project and asked for a refund – but it never came. VCAT ordered the contractor to repay the money by November last year, but he filed for bankruptcy in December, leaving the family with no way to recoup their costs. “It’s caused a lot of stress for our family and we’re much less trusting of people now,” Mr Trenerry said. “I want other residents to do your research and check with the Victorian Building Authority to ensure that their builder is registered to perform the work that they are quoting for.” Mr Trenerry said the deck had now been built with money that had been set aside for much-needed bathroom renovations. “My wife stays at home as a full-time carer for Cadel and we’re not flush with money,” he said. “It’s to the point where my wife can’t bathe Cadel in our current bathroom because of his size.” The contractor did not respond to Star Weekly’s messages prior to going to print.

Collector ‘crushed’ by doll theft By Esther Lauaki Vera Wang, Lucille Ball and Kimora Lee Simmons dolls were among a collection of rare Barbies valued at up to $20,000 stolen from a Rockbank property. Collector Aimee Orr said she was devastated to discover her treasures – nearly 150 dolls that she had gathered over 30 years – missing last week. Police estimate that the dolls were stolen about June 3 but the theft went unnoticed until last weekend because the dolls were stored in a garage.

Ms Orr said she believed thieves might have targeted her collection. “We’re not sure if thieves had been to our property before and had a look around and then come back for the dolls,” she said. Last Wednesday, police informed Ms Orr that the number plates of her husband’s old car which is parked at their property were found on a vehicle that was used in a robbery near Maryborough. “When Maryborough police contacted us about the stolen plates we were told that the perpetrator could also have the dolls,” she said.

“I’ve got this sinking feeling, which makes me feel sick, that someone has stolen them [the dolls] to make a quick buck and they’ve sold them for a fraction of what they’re worth.” The collection of dolls included a one-of-a-kind Ferrari Barbie with genuine diamond prancing horse, a Grease and Twilight gold-label collection and an entire set of Holiday Barbies from between 1988 to 2016. Ms Orr said that a limited-edition Kimora Lee Simmons doll, which she won, is the only one of its kind in Australia. “The theft of the dolls has crushed me,” Ms Orr said.

“I’m very upset about the dolls. When I heard about them going missing I was in tears. “I want them back. “I started when I was eight … I’ve been collecting them for nearly 30 years and it’s something that my daughter and I would do together. “She’s also getting to an age where she’s growing up and … she is a lot more interested in her friends so the dolls were something that we still loved together.” Ms Orr encouraged anyone who spots rare dolls for sale online to save the listing and contact police.

Last-gasp funds keep centre going A Melton foodbank and welfare centre that was at risk of closure has been extended a lifeline. Resurgence opened in August and provides food and budget services to local families who are struggling, as well as job placements for up to 30 Work for the Dole program participants each week. But the community foodbank has been feeling the pinch of high running costs and a funding shortfall. A reprieve came last week when 10 more Work for the Dole participants signed on at Resurgence – meaning another round of

organisations like Melton Rotary.” Roma Pedersen, of Djerriwarrh employment and education services, said a number of projects, including weaving mats for the homeless, wouldn’t happen without Resurgence. “Having such a supportive work for the dole host … makes a real difference in their lives. “So many participants have come through, done their required hours and then come back just to volunteer because they provide that welcoming space.”

federal government funding. Melton Rotary also extended a helping hand with a $1000 grant. Director Christina Mataia said the funding was vital for the small community organisation. “Funding and donations pays for establishment costs, it pays for rent, power, utilities … some also goes towards wages and materials for the programs that we run,” Ms Mataia said. “It’s extremely important that we continue getting support and funding and it’s even more important that we have the support of

Train punctuality on V/Line’s Ballarat line has nosedived, with May’s figures one of the worst on record. Just 79.8 per cent of services arrived on time during the month, well below the V/Line target of 92 per cent and continuing the trend downwards since December’s 91.2 per cent. V/Line chief executive James Pinder said increased patronage on the line –which includes Sunshine, Ardeer, Deer Park and Caroline Springs stations – was to blame for the poor results as trains had to linger at stations longer. There was an additional 86,112 trips compared with May 2016. “There were more than 338,000 trips in May last year so there is huge growth along the Ballarat corridor,” Mr Pinder said. “V/Line will continue to do everything we can to improve on-time running including encouraging passengers to spread out along the platform and use all available doors.” Reliability on the line dropped from 98.7 per cent to 97.6 across May, which is still above the stated goal of 96 per cent. Mr Pinder said carriages would be added to Ballarat services to increase punctuality, while more services would be added to the timetable from July. An extra 18 new weekday and weekend services will be added from August 27.

First aid for Fido, Felix By Esther Lauaki Would you know how to save an animal’s life in an emergency? A Bacchus Marsh pet store owner has started organising pet first-aid courses to teach locals lifesaving skills. Snoozeez co-owner Traci Tucker, who recently completed the course herself, says learning to care for pets is as vital as caring for humans when they are sick or injured. “It’s extremely worthwhile to take a pet first-aid course,” Ms Tucker said. “Everyone is forced to learn first-aid on humans through school or work – why not on pets as well? People don’t realise that it’s vitally important. “It gives you the confidence to say, ‘I can help here’ in an emergency. “For many people, pets are their children.” The next course, on Saturday, July 15, will cover CPR, snake bites, natural remedies in rural areas and covers a broad range of skills. “The course is very hands-on and covers topics like how to stabilise a dog if it’s in an aggressive state and the skills to be able to help an animal so you can get it to a vet,” Ms Tucker says. The course is being run by A Dogs Life Pet First Aid Care and Nutrition which provides group and private CPR and internationally recognised first-aid courses. For details or to register: 5367 1768

Ballan land plan revealed Ballan residents are being invited to put forward their ideas on land use in their town. The draft Ballan Strategic Directions document, now out for public feedback, proposes changes to land use and zoning to support growth and the needs of residents, business owners and farmers. Moorabool mayor David Edwards said the proposals will better support a mix of housing types. “Ballan is a critical growth centre for Moorabool shire and it is imperative that we have the right land use settings to support sustainable growth and protect the character of the town,” Cr Edwards said. “By 2041, Ballan will be home to at least double the current population. “We’re planning now for the land use requirements of a population of almost 6000 residents, so it is extremely important that the community shares their thoughts on the proposed changes.” Cr Edwards said the document will make a priority of keeping Ballan’s character and would be used to guide decisions on permit applications. He said it will build on and, in many cases, supersede elements of the Ballan Structure plan. The draft Ballan Strategic Directions document is available at the council offices and submission are open until July 17. St Catherine of Siena Primary School pupils are sharing the secrets behind some of their favourite family meals for a new cookbook. Year 6 pupils compiled the recipes as part of their school project on diversity and culture. Teacher Kirsty Moore says the project allowed the kids to explore their heritages and learn more about their peers. The cookbook includes Sudanese, Filipino, Indonesian, Zimbabwean, Maltese and Italian recipes. “The students have been busily working on a cookbook that demonstrates their diverse cultural backgrounds and the significance that the sharing of meals has to them and their families,” Ms Moore said.

“What they had to do was share stories about something that brings them together with their families. Part of our cookbook was also to share how the dishes are made, as well as who makes them in their families.” The Melton West school’s community shared finger food prepared by the pupils at the cookbook launch last week. “It was a perfect opportunity to showcase the great learning that goes on in our school and also strengthen the ties that we have to the local community,” Ms Moore says. “It was true culmination of what we learn here at school.”

Cash to help unite community By Esther Lauaki A new community hub will be built next to Kurunjang Primary School thanks to a $2.35 million state government grant. The money will be used to design and build the Kurunjang community hub to include a new neighbourhood house, community programs, public and school meeting places and a communal garden. State education secretary Judith Graley joined Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey for last week’s funding announcement. Cr Ramsey said the hub would give all in the the community a place to make friends, learn and share ideas. “Melton is a young, fast-growing area and we know that our community needs opportunities to come together,” she said. “This new hub, right in the heart of Kurunjang, will give everyone in the area the chance to gather … and feel they belong. “Council is very pleased that our application to the Victorian government for this funding was successful – it’s partnerships like this that make the world of difference to our community.” Kurunjang Primary School principal Jenny Robinson said she was excited that the hub would bring the school and the wider community closer together. “It’s very positive news for the school,” she said. “The intention is that the hub will have large use by the school and would include office space, a kitchen garden and teaching kitchen. “We would be able to use the garden for a program to promote healthy living and it would also be open for vocational education training students to use. “It also has the potential for parents and other adults to access for training programs.”

A sharp eye on local talent Bacchus Marsh’s creative community is being encouraged to showcase their work at the Photography Winter Salon exhibition. The exhibition, from July 28 at the B-MAC Gallery, provides an opportunity for local artists and photographers to display their work. Landscape photographer Katy Filonenko says this is the first group

photography exhibition of its kind for the town. “The Winter Salon is another way we can support art in the community,” Filonenko says. “It’s a great opportunity for people to showcase their work. We’ve had some good interest with about 10 entries so far but we want as many as possible.”

The exhibition is open theme, meaning photographers can submit their best three to five images of any style. Submissions close July 10. Details: www.bmaci.org.au/exhibitor wintersalon2017 Esther Lauaki

So much fun it’s scary A call for creative “little monsters” has gone out to help drum up support for the annual Marsh Monster Mash fundraiser. Organisers of the Bacchus Marsh community event, which raises money for a different Moorabool charity each year, are leaving the design of its new posters and billboards up to the public. Committee member Kristy Clark said the festival was an opportunity for the community, affectionately known as “Marshians”, to get together and have fun for a good cause. “It’s an opportunity to have a good time and

do some good in the community,” Ms Clark said. Marsh Monster Mash, on October 28, is in its fourth year and has rides and food stalls and a parade through the town. The event attracts more than 300 people every year. Entries for the poster competition close on July 31. Completed designs should be dropped at Lerderderg library, Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. Residents in frost-prone areas are being encouraged to cover their water meter to prevent it from freezing. Western Water general manager Graham Holt advises customers to cover meters with a large bucket, cardboard or plastic box, half a tyre, a hessian bag or an old blanket. To stop pipes from freezing, also first ensure they are clean and not leaking, then wrap in insulation material available from hardware shops.

While it’s always great to be part of our vibrant and diverse community, it’s been particularly fantastic of late, with the announcement of two much needed projects...

As a Councillor, the wellbeing of our community is of utmost importance to me. Like many residents, I’ve seen recent news and social media reports about robberies...

...set to give health and community services a real boost in the City of Melton.

...and break-ins taking place in homes across Melbourne, including the City of Melton. Unfortunately, our community is not immune to acts of violence, but rest assured, Council continues to advocate to the State Government for increased police numbers, and a 24 hour police station in Caroline Springs. We are also calling for the establishment of a permanent Task Force in the ¡ ¢£¤ ¥ ¦§¥ ¨ © ª ¤ our residents.

Firstly, services for young people facing mental health issues have received a big boost with the announcement of a new Headspace youth mental health service for Melton. Headspace offers early intervention for 12 to 25 year olds in mental health and related physical health issues, social and vocational support, and alcohol and other drug use. Having a local Headspace will make a real difference to young people in our community who face mental health risks, and it’s wonderful to see that Council’s persistent advocacy to get this effective and highly respected service established in our City has paid off. We are extremely grateful to the Federal Government for ¡ ¢£ ¤ ¢ ¥ ¥ ¦ Council also received very pleasing news that a new community hub is set to be built in Kurunjang, as the result of $2.35 million in State Government funding. Funded through the Shared Facilities Fund, the Kurunjang Community Hub will be a community and school shared space, with a Neighbourhood House featuring meeting rooms, a kitchen garden and teaching kitchen. This exciting new facility will give residents a vibrant place to gather, learn new skills and feel like they belong.

In good news, I’m thrilled to be able to report on the progress of the construction of Westwood Drive bridge. Daughters get with the program By Esther Lauaki A state government health grant will help to kick new goals for women’s health in the west. Health Minister Jill Hennessy announced a $600,000 grant this month to expand the successful Sons of the West health program, driven by the Western Bulldogs Football Club in partnership with a range of service providers, to include women under the banner of Daughters of the West.

The Daughters of the West program will bring women from Ballarat, Melton, Maribyrnong and Wyndham together to support each other and lead healthier lifestyles. “I’m delighted we’re getting behind the club in their important work to help families in the west lead healthier lives,” Ms Hennessy said. “The Daughters of the West will give local women the support and tools they need to live better, eat better and get back into the game of life.”

‘‘

I’m delighted we’re getting behind the club and - Jill Hennessy their work

’’

The program will be designed by women and will include activities across Melbourne’s western suburbs and match day experiences with the premiership winning Doggies.

Sons of the West supports men to lead healthier lives through local activities that encourage them to be more active, eat healthily, reduce smoking and alcohol consumption, and strengthen social connections. The program has been so successful it was expanded into Sunbury, Maryborough and Smythesdale earlier this year. Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon said the launch of the sister program was an exciting development.

100 years of nurturing Moorabool families have shared their photos and memorabilia to celebrate 100 years of maternal and child health in Victoria. The milestone was marked with the unveiling of a commemorative display at Lerderderg library in Bacchus Marsh last week. Moorabool chief executive Robert Croxford said the service began in Bacchus Marsh in 1939 with the support of the Country Women’s Association and expanded to other townships over time. A purpose-built infant welfare centre was officially opened in Bacchus Marsh in 1957, with Sister Smith the sole staff member. Mr Croxford said that the types of services provided in 2017 reflected the current needs of the community. “Some information provided over the last 100 years has definitely changed … but what hasn’t changed is the importance of this service,” he said. “Our maternal and child health service [today] provides key ages and stages health

checks from birth to three years and new parents groups. “Families in Moorabool are fortunate to also have access to a breastfeeding support service, emotional wellbeing group, imagination magic performing arts program and literacy programs as part of the maternal and child health service.” Victoria’s first baby health centre opened in Richmond in June, 1917. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE Brendan Richards has served the Melton community through Rotary for the past 34 years. The dedicated banker, father, grandfather and long-time Melton resident spoke to Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection with Melton? I moved to Melton from Warragul in 1966 as my father Frank Richards had been appointed principal at Melton Primary School and I worked at Commonwealth Bank in Footscray.

in community work I saw it as an opportunity to join such a great club as Melton. I have been involved now for 34 years having carried out most board positions, but my highlight was as president in 2000.

How long have you lived in the area? I have actually lived in Melton for 41 years, having spent some time at Morwell and Ballarat while I was in the bank.

What other hats do you wear in the community? Apart from many Rotary activities (currently treasurer) I am involved with Melton Catholic Parish and of course our four wonderful children and 11 grandchildren. What’s your favourite place to spend your time in the area? I do a lot of walking and Melton has given me plenty of opportunity to walk the many and varied tracks that they have. What would people be surprised to know about you? I am legally blind, having a hereditary eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa. Very little peripheral vision and about 10 per cent overall.

What are you passionate about? I believe in social justice and assisting the Melton community wherever possible.

What is the best thing about Melton? The city is well laid out and there are plenty of parks, gardens and trees. The community is pleasant and friendly and a great place to live.

How did you become involved with Rotary? I was invited to join the Melton Rotary Club in 1983 and because I have always been interested

If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? That people live in peace and harmony.

(Supplied)

Tell me about your background. I was born in Donald, Victoria and because of my father’s occupation we moved around quite a bit. I attended three primary schools and three technical colleges before joining the bank at Dandenong in 1963 at the ripe old age of 16. I married Margaret Coburn in 1969 and we have four children and 11 grandchildren. Before we built our new home the bank informed me I should consider moving closer to the city as Melton was quite some distance from suburbia. Various moves and promotions (14 in all) within the bank saw me finish my career as executive area manager in Melton in 1998.

Maurice Gleeson and Miriam Bilander take a stroll at Caroline Springs. (Dennis Manktelow)

Take the next step Volunteers are needed for a health initiative in Melton and Caroline Springs. The Walk with Willpower project, run by Blind Sports Victoria, matches adults with low or no vision with volunteers who meet up for a weekly walk. North west co-ordinator Miriam Bilander said most participants are over 50, have vision loss and live in the area. “It’s about getting people who are vision impaired out in their local area,” she said. “It’s not just guiding, it also involves describing the local environment. People with vision loss may know their house and the local shopping centre but they might not know the colours of the buildings and what types of trees are around.” Blind Sports Victoria president Maurice Gleeson said walking with a buddy was the first

step towards pursuing other interests in sports and recreation. “A lot of people who acquire vision loss, lose their confidence and often need a lot of coaxing or are relearning how to do things,” Mr Gleeson said. “That’s part of our role, to encourage people with vision loss to continue doing things in a modified way with some support.” He said isolation was a big issue among the vision impaired. “Sometimes people don’t always participate in activities … or if they do it’s not in a meaningful way,” Mr Gleeson said. “It’s about empowering people to get involved. The great thing about the project is that they call them volunteers but often they become friends.” Esther Lauaki

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds the most social spot in town . . . SUNSHINE SOCIAL Address: 64 Glengala Road, Sunshine West Phone: 9312 0223 of gravy as per charcoal shop tradition. The chips are very fine and the slaw a crunchy, lightly-dressed delight. The meat served with Nat’s order of “lamb shoulder with Mediterranean herbs” ($22.50 with one side) is tasty. But we are both surprised the sheep meat is sliced and more like your regular lamb roast than the fall-apart epic the phrase “lamb shoulder” automatically suggests to us. The no-hesitation thumbs-up of the night goes to Bennie’s fried chicken burger ($13.50). He loves the big, succulent, crisp chunk of fried chicken and gives his burger – abetted by slaw, cheese and jalapenos – an eight out of 10. He gets chips with his sandwich and an extra order of slaw on the side that is plenty big enough for both himself and Nat. On the basis of community reaction and our experience just a few days into its life, the place will endure and then some. And next time, we may expand our ordering horizons to the likes of pork ribs, grilled calamari, a range of meat on sticks or Moroccan lamb snags. CHARGRILLED VEGETABLES AND OLIVES

CHICKEN, CHIPS AND SLAW

1201234-PB41-15 10031640-01

Sunshine Social is a hit and hoot, and we love it to bits. This is the biggest thing to hit Sunshine West for years – the adjacent Glengala Road shops barely seem to have changed for the best part of a decade. The old servo has been done up a treat, the swish fit-out preserving the old-time feel of the building and, best of all, the wonderful roof that once sheltered filling-up motorists from the elements. Loosely based on the concept of old-school charcoal chicken shops, Sunshine Social goes from there to offer a menu that broadens out to take in some multicultural ideas, all the while offering a cohesive game plan. Marinated olives and chargrilled vegetables ($7.50) are a delightful way to get our meal under way. It’s a deceptively big serving of beaut olives of various colours and dimensions and long strips of gorgeous red capsicum, zucchini and eggplant. Given the charcoal chook inspiration going on here, I was only ever going to order one thing – the very same thing that I ALWAYS order in chicken shops: Half a chicken with slaw and chips ($28.50). The price here is higher, of course, but no more than expected. The chicken near the various bones is excellent, moist and delicious. The breast meat is dry – as it so often is, no matter the price. But it’s not terminally so, and certainly all this could easily be fixed up with a small pot

SPORT Inconsistent Devils claw their way to victory It’s been a while coming, but Darley has finally got its second win of the Ballarat Netball League season. The Devils have had moments of brilliance this season, but haven’t been able to sustain it for a full four quarters. Even on Saturday, as the Devils put the four points in the pocket against Ballarat, they had moments they would rather forget. Devils coach Renee Hulls was relieved to get the 49-42 win, which was only sealed in the final quarter.

“We were overdue for a win,” she said. “Half way through the second quarter we had a six to seven goal lead and we needed to put the foot down. Ballarat instead got back into the game. “Credit to our girls who regrouped. Amanda Wilson in defence was great and got a few intercepts and we rewarded her at the other end. “She’d come off a couple of weeks off with an achilles injury and she shut Kelly [Moran] down.” Sixteen year-old Melanie Freeman was best on court, shooting 26 goals.

Hulls, who shot 23 goals herself, said she was thrilled with the development of Freeman who didn’t start the season in the A-grade team. “She jumped at the chance,” she said. “It was a chance to get her to experience what A-grade netball is like and I’m proud of her. It’s been a big jump and she’s learning every week.” Hulls said the key for the side now was to play consistent netball for longer periods of time. “We’ve played some great netball, but one quarter has been letting us down. We have the talent, we’ve just got to put it together.”

Sharks right in the hunt By Tara Murray Hillside is putting itself in the perfect position to claim its first Essendon District Football League division 1 finals berth. In a finals race likely to go down to the final round for a third straight year, all wins are vital. After a disappointing result against Tullamarine three rounds ago, Hillside has rebounded with two wins against other finals hopefuls. The first was a one-point win against Airport West. On Saturday, they defeated local rival Taylors Lakes by 33 points. Sharks football manager Cole Harvey said both matches were eight-point games. “The win against Airport West was massive for us,” he said. “We had a couple of guys out, which made it even bigger. “Even though it was just one point, in the context of the season it was massive. “With the closeness of the competition, the game against Taylors Lakes was just as important. A win would give us a minor break on fifth spot. “We’re just trying to realise our goal of playing finals.” The Sharks had a mixed start against the Lions. They dominated the first quarter to open up a 20-point lead before the Lions fought back to reduce the margin to two points at the main break. Similar to the first half, the Sharks made the most of a slight breeze in the third quarter to increase the lead to 25 points. This time they didn’t let the Lions back into the game, out-scoring them in the final quarter for the 16.15 (111)-12.6 (78) victory. Harvey said it was rammed home to the players at half-time how important the third quarter would be. “The boys stuck to their structures and game plan,” he said. “They got the job done. It was also past players day at the club and important for all three sides with ladder position. It was a really good day.” Jackson Volpato was named best on ground, with Harvey saying it was one of his best performances of the season. Anthony Aloi, on a wing, and Matthew Patane, up forward, were also among the best for the Sharks. The win leaves the Sharks sitting third on the ladder ahead of clashes with the two bottom sides. Harvey knows getting wins against both Hadfield and East Keilor could set up their season. “We need to get the job done against Hadfield,” he said. “We also find playing East Keilor hard and it’s a real danger game for us. If we get the job done against Hadfield and East Keilor, it’ll set us up, particularly with a tough run home where we play all the top sides.” In division 2, Burnside Heights proved no match for ladder leader Coburg Districts.

The win keeps the Devils finals hopes alive and with a favourable draw in the run home, Hulls hasn’t given up hope of a top six finish. The Devils, sitting ninth, sit three games outside the top six. On Saturday Bacchus Marsh had their biggest win in years, knocking off last year’s premiers East Point. The Cobras led at every break but couldn’t break away from the Kangaroos until late in the game, winning 47-41. Tara Murray

Sports shorts Hockey

Caroline Springs’ women’s pennant F-grade team remains on top of the ladder in the Hockey Victoria’s winter competition after a 6-0 win against Melbourne University on Saturday. Brittney Webster scored a hat trick, while Megan Shadbolt, Laura Brown and Holly Azzopardi found the back of the net. Their women’s metro B west team, which is also on top of the ladder, had a bye. In men’s pennant G grade, Caroline Springs suffered an 8-0 loss to Frankston. The under-10 teams had mixed results, with the black team winning 4-1 and the blue team losing 3-0, both against Footscray teams.

Rugby Union

Melton maintained its spot in the top four of the Victorian Rugby League second division competition. The Warriors were made to fight for the win on Saturday, defeating bottom side Maroondah 26-21. Melton is fourth on the ladder with five wins and four losses.

Women’s Football

Melton Centrals’ had their best performance of the AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League division 1 season but it wasn’t enough for victory on Sunday. Centrals led at quarter-time against Redan, but couldn’t sustain the momentum losing 12.9 (81)-3.1 (19). Alanna Porter kicked two goals in the loss. In division 2, Bacchus Marsh lost to Drysdale Hawks 5.7 (37)-3.5 (23).

WRFL

Caroline Springs remains without a win in Western Region Football League division 1, but if Saturday’s results are to go by it isn’t far away. The Lakers trailed all day against Albion, but the Cats couldn’t break the Lakers and run away with the game. After quarter-time, the Lakers outscored the Cats nine goals to seven, but it wasn’t enough losing 13.13 (91)-11.9 (75). Brian Lake kicked three goals for the Lakers, while Keenan O’Shea was named their best.

Melton Phoenix produced one of its better performances of the FFV state league 4 west season, to come away with a 1-1 draw against Balmoral. Despite the draw the Phoenix remain on the bottom of the ladder. Hillside’s Rocky Ferraro takes a strong mark out in front. (Damian Visentini)

The Lions never let the Bears into the game, kicking eight first-quarter goals to open up a 41-point lead.

The Lions extended their lead at every break, eventually running out the winners by 23.20 (158)-5.7 (37).

Back to back wins a big boost for Thoroughbreds Melton Thoroughbreds tripled their wins for the Big V men’s division 1 season in the space of 24 hours. Before the weekend’s matches, the Thoroughbreds had won just one match for the year with several close misses. Come 5pm on Sunday, the Thoroughbreds had three wins. They didn’t come easy though. First up they travelled to Shepparton to take on the Shepparton Gators on Saturday night. At the end of regular time, scores were locked at 75 apiece. In other matches this season the Thoroughbreds would have panicked; this time it was different, said coach John Allison. “Our boys stayed tough and played our

defence and were able to get the win,” he said. “When we went to overtime I told the boys to relax a little bit and concentrate on what they were doing well.” The Thoroughbreds outscored the Gators 9-6 in overtime to win, 87-84. Billy Feben scored seven of those points. Allison put his trust in Feben to be the leader out there. “We made sure we put the ball in his hand,” he said. “I was really on him to control the game and not be rushed and be smart with it, which he was.” Ivan Harris, who played all 45 minutes, top-scored with 30 points. The Thoroughbreds had to back up on

Sunday against Melbourne University Black Angels. The Angels were coming off a win on Saturday night against Keilor Thunder, which had lost just two matches for the season before that game. Allison said the key was to stick with them early and be in the game after the first quarter, and they did just that. “It was an even first quarter and the second quarter we outscored them 27-12 and got a nice buffer. The third and fourth quarters were pretty even and they came hard and shot well late in the game. We hung tough again.” The Thoroughbreds won 82-57. Harris and Feben again came up big, playing significant minutes. Feben had 26 points, while

Harris, who again played the whole game, scored 25 points. Allison hopes the confidence gained from the two wins will continue to boost the side for the rest of the season. “We have been in games and should have won more,” he said. “We think we should have had six or seven wins. “We’ve been working hard on our defence and finding that composure. Hopefully we can get another two, three or even four wins in the rest of the season.” The Thoroughbreds youth league side came from behind to defeat Wallan 89-87. They won the final quarter 30-15. Burras attack pays off By Tara Murray Diggers Rest passed stage one of its next phase of the Riddell District Football League season with flying colours. Having played the bottom four teams in the past four rounds heading into the weekend, the Burras knew they had a much tougher month ahead. The first of those matches – all against sides in the top six – was against Wallan on Saturday. After a slow first quarter, the Burras stepped it up after quarter-time to win 18.13 (121)-9.11(65). The Burras had a different face at the helm for the day, with coach Shaun Sims passing the reigns to assistant coach Shane Bishop. Bishop said it was a good opportunity for him and the playing group.

“We did it for one game last season and we circled a couple of games this year that we thought would be good for my development from a coaching perspective,” he said. “It gives the boys a different voice. It’s the same message but someone else giving it. “Footy can become a bit repetitive and it’s good to change things up.” While it was a different coach in charge, it was still the same Burras on the field as they put in a commanding performance. The Wallan Mapgies had stages when they dominated play, but the Burras limited it and worked themselves back on top. Bishop said one of the main aims of the game was to continue working on what they had put in place before the bye a few weeks ago. “We’ve gone with a more attacking mindset,” he said. “We thought we did that well against the lower sides, but the challenge was to maintain it against more pressure. “We were still brave with our decision making. When we pulled it off we played well; when we didn’t we allowed them to play to their potential.” Jordan Aitken, a mid-season recruit, kicked four goals. Bishop said Aitken had been a handy pick-up who always presents a target to kick to. Bishop said other standouts in the win were Sean Egan in the ruck, Patrick Jackson down back and Chris Lawton. “We had 22 solid contributors and I couldn’t find anyone who didn’t perform.” The second-placed Burras face third-placed Rupertswood this week, followed by a clash with ladder leaders the following week. Bishop said they weren’t looking too far ahead. “We’re focusing on Rupertswood and not worrying about Macedon yet. Rupertswood have been doing the right things. “We’re taking the opportunities to build on the foundations we’ve set and focusing on us.” Meanwhile, Rockbank won its second 50 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 27, 2017

game of the season, defeating Broadford. An inaccurate Rams couldn’t break the Kangaroos, but did enough to win 12.17 (89)-11.6 (72). Ricky Cameron kicked four goals in the win.

The Rams move to ninth on the ladder. Melton Centrals suffered a 24.18 (162)-2.6 (18) loss to Macedon. Allan Hill was named best player for Centrals.

Western Jets were obliterated by the Dandenong Stingrays in the second half of their TAC Cup clash at Burbank Oval on Sunday. The sides went into half-time inseparable on 27 apiece, but the Stingrays turned it on in the second half with a 13-goal-to-one blitz, running out winners 16.16 (112) - 5.6 (36). Stefan Radovanovic continued his stellar form for the Jets with a second best-on-ground for his side in three weeks. Radovanovic, a bottom-age player out of Keilor, has been in the Jets best in six of his eight games and managed to do so on limited preparation, having missed the pre-season with injury. Others to impress for the Jets included co-captain Nick Stuhldreier, Josh Mould, Xavier O’Halloran, Riley Ham and Tristan Xerri. The Jets have fallen to the bottom of the TAC Cup ladder. They will not get a chance to rectify their situation until July 9 when they host the Murray Bushrangers at Burbank Oval. Meanwhile, Western Jets stars Cameron Rayner and Lachlan Fogarty featured in Vic Metro’s 22-point win over Vic Country in the latest round of the NAB AFL under-18 national championships on Saturday. Rayner caught the eye with three goals, prompting the draft experts to ponder his validity as a potential high first round draft pick at this year’s national draft. Fogarty hit the scoreboard with two goals, while getting plenty of touches in the midfield and applying good defensive pressure. Vic Metro takes on South Australia at Etihad Stadium on Friday at 4.40pm. Lance Jenkinson

Mustangs on the move By Tara Murray The Melton Hockey men’s sides have experienced their best weekend of the season thanks to comprehensive wins in the Hockey Victoria Vic League. The Mustangs have endured a tough season across the board, so Saturday’s results are a bright spark for the playing group. The Vic League 3 team had a 7-0 win against Swinburne, with Lachie Vallance scoring a hat-trick. Stephen Lawrence scored twice and Tom McMurrie scored the other goal. The Melton reserves had a 4-1 win, also against Swinburne. Scott McLaren scored twice, with Ben Hanley-Woodbridge and Hayden Lawrence the other goal-scorers. Mustangs men’s coach Ryan Self was thrilled with the results. It was just the second win of the season for both sides. “We hadn’t played at home for a while and hadn’t had a full side, either,” he said. “Getting a couple of wins on the board makes things sweeter at the club.” Self, who is also a senior player, took over the coaching role a couple of weeks ago when McLaren had to step down due to other commitments. Senior captain Anthony Arnold is also helping out with the coaching. “There was a bit of a change of coaches, which isn’t ideal,” Self said. “Scott had to walk away from the role. “I’ve played a lot of sport and coached a few junior sides. I haven’t taken on a senior coaching role before, but it’s not something I can’t handle. I was a captain for a while and I’ve had to run training sessions before.” Self said that with the change of coaching arrangements, the players had stepped up and started to take more responsibility. The win moves the Mustangs’ senior side to fourth on the ladder. The reserves side is fifth, a game outside the top four. Self is hoping confidence from Saturday’s wins will be the launching pad for the second half of the season and the chase for finals berths. “The players have been good and we haven’t taken a step back,” he said. “Hopefully, we can finish fourth and do what we did last year when we finished fourth and won a preliminary final and made the grand final.” While it was a good day for the men’s senior and reserves teams, that wasn’t the case for the other senior sides. The women’s Vic League 2 side lost to PEGS 7-0, while the reserves lost 4-0, also to PEGS. Both women’s sides remain without a win. The men’s Metro B north-west team lost to United Khalsa 2-1. McLaren was the Mustangs goal-scorer. In the juniors, the under-12s, under-14s and under-16s all had wins. The under-10 girls and under-10 mixed teams had draws.

Amy Carroll was again Diggers Rest’s best goaler. (Shawn Smits)

Tough victory puts Burras back on track Diggers Rest returned to the winners’ list in the Riddell District Netball League with a hard-fought win against Rockbank. After three losses against sides in the top six, the Burras were looking to get their season back on track against the Rams, who were coming off their first win of the season. The Rams led at quarter-time before the Burras found their groove to lead by eight goals at half-time. They extended the lead to 11 goals at the last break, before an even last quarter. The Burras went on to win 42-29. Burras playing coach Amy Carroll scored 27 goals. Rianne Vining scored 16 goals to be the Rams’ best shooter. In positive signs for the Rams, the margin was significantly less than the 34-goal loss they endured the last time the two teams met, just over a month ago. The Burras move to fifth on the ladder, ahead of Melton Centrals on percentage. They have a tough couple of weeks ahead, with matches against Rupertswood and Macedon. Centrals were no match for ladder leader Macedon, losing 64-41. The Cats did most of the damage in the 21-4 second quarter against the Centrals, who were missing two of their key mid-courters. Rebecca Morabito shot 19 goals from 20 attempts in the loss. Centrals now face Riddell, which is a game and percentage outside the top six. Tara Murray

Lachie Vallance scored a hat-trick on Saturday for Melton. (Shawn Smits)

Win delivers points and lessons to be learnt for Darley Darley came home with the four points, but it wasn’t a performance coach Heath Scotland will remember fondly. At half-time in their Ballarat Football League match against Ballarat, the Devils looked headed for another big win. Up by 39 points, they had been by far the better team. But the Devils didn’t put their foot down and storm away. Instead, the Swans reduced the margin to 35 points at three-quarter time and then kicked the first three goals of the last quarter. The Devils steadied with two of their own, but the Swans continued to press, kicking the last four goals of the game but falling short in a 15.11 (101)-14.10 (94) loss.

For Scotland, it was a disappointing second half in which his side struggled with the mental aspects of the game. He said he thought his side had done enough to hold on for the win. “Take nothing away from Ballarat,” he said. “They exposed some of our flaws and we’re certainly not happy from our end. “Mentally, the players shut down at half-time. We had the game in our hands.” Harley Inglis and Kyle Docherty kicked three goals apiece for the Devils. Despite the disappointing second half and a loss in their previous game, against Lake Wendouree, Scotland is not greatly concerned. The Devils sit atop of the ladder, percentage ahead of Lake Wendouree.

‘‘

Mentally, the players shut down at half-time

’’

- Heath Scotland

“Our style has dropped off the last couple of weeks,” he said. “We had been really good early in the season. We’ll refocus on the areas that got us off to a great start.” He said they still had four senior players to come back into the side, including three of their starting midfielders. Matt Inglis, Dan Roy, Rhys Ellis and Scotland all missed Saturday’s game. Scotland said they were hoping to settle their side in the next few weeks.

The Devils weren’t the only top side to suffer a scare, with Bacchus Marsh having to settle for a draw against East Point. The Cobras blew a 40-point quarter-time lead to trail by four points at half-time. They were up by 16 points at the last break, but it wasn’t enough, the Kangaroos drawing even to force a 14.10 (94)-13.16 (94) draw. Jarrah Maksymow kicked five goals for the Cobras with Scott Sherlock named their best. The Cobras have slipped two points behind ladder leaders Darley and Lake Wendouree. Melton and Melton South both had byes because they played their round nine match as a standalone match before the first round. Tara Murray 51 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 27, 2017

What is it? Something of a cult classic. Enthusiasts have cottoned on to Skoda’s mid-sized performance car, the Octavia RS sedan and wagon, that shares key elements with Volkswagen’s Golf GTI. This one is a limited-edition model with more grunt, improved dynamics and sharper looks.

What’s it like inside? A little demure, with swathes of black, charcoal and grey material broken up by red highlights. The gauge cluster is clear and concise and

What’s the cost and what do you get? That depends on whether you want a sedan ($41,490) or the more popular wagon ($43,190). Either way, you get a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels through a clever electronically controlled, mechanically locking differential. Naturally, as a top-of-the-range model, it is also loaded with gear, including active cruise control, dual-zone climate control, sat nav and smartphone apps such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A five-year warranty with capped price servicing helps seal the deal. Skoda’s place as a member of the Volkswagen Group allows it to use technology from its big brother. Intriguingly, this limited-run model is available only with a manual transmission and it features Volkswagen’s VAQ active differential as standard. What’s it like to drive? Spunky, but not quite as agile as a Golf GTI. The Octavia hits a middle ground more fitting of its practical character, with more stability than Volkswagen’s benchmark hatch.

the infotainment display works seamlessly. Prod the “vRS Modeâ€? button on the centre console and you get a variety of driving modes, including a customisable setting that allows you to tailor the car’s steering, suspension or driveline responses.

Is it safe? Decently so, with a five-star safety suite that stems from a full complement of airbags along with some other standard features. Would I buy it?

Yes indeed, the limited-edition 230 presses the right buttons with its clever diff and manual transmission. It also looks much better than the next-generation model, which has an odd-looking quad-headlamp design.
