Pink kit to beat cancer Spring Hills Football players will be kitted out in pink to highlight their support for women affected by cancer. The Caroline Springs-based club is hosting its Think Pink soccer day on July 30 to raise money and awareness for the Think Pink Foundation which provides free services to women and men affected by breast cancer. Club spokeswoman Vicky Papamihail said the charity event is for everyone in the soccer community to support breast cancer patients. “There will be plenty of children’s activities, a sausage sizzle, raffles and displays, and we are urging people to wear something pink to be part of the day,” Papamihail said. Club president Tom Bendistinto said the event helped create a public awareness. “We raised $5500 in last year’s event and this year our target is to double [that]. The … day is also a demonstration of the wider role the club plays within the community through involvement in such an important issue.” The community soccer day will be held at Springside Recreational Reserve on July 30 from 9am to 5pm. Game-on for Melton man By Esther Lauaki Forget the Rubik’s cube and yo-yos, a Melton man is at the helm of a new game that he hopes will sweep the world. Leigh Trevethan and wife Melissa are part of a team of creators who have spent much of the past three years developing the game Gossimo, which turns traditional table tennis into a battle of two cities. Mr Trevethan said that Gossimo was trialled at recent table tennis tournaments in China and he hopes that it will catch on worldwide. The game is now in production and is set to be in selected sports stores later this year. A simplified version has also been developed for young children.

“We’ve found that kids really enjoy it and clubs can use it as a training tool … it can help educate young [table tennis] players to be better by aiming for pieces that are placed on the table.” Gossimo is the brainchild of Mr Trevethan and a friend who “suggested a novel concept to create a game using table tennis as the base”. “We both played as kids and he still plays … we realised that table tennis was created in the 1880s and nothing has really come out of it. “A lot of other sports have a spin-off from their original game and we felt we wanted to Leigh Trevethan with Gossimo. around,” he said. “Each player represents a particular state and they win the war over three battles.” A miniature Great Wall of China divides the table into two “territories”, with game pieces representing an army of soldiers, a prince and king strategically placed on either side of the wall. The aim of the game is to knock over opponent’s soldiers to get to the king – the best of three battles wins the war. “It can get quite competitive between the two players,” Mr Trevethan said. Future versions of the game will be themed around other historic battles from around the world. Information: www.ktgames.com.au
