Libs vow to open cop shop By Ewen McRae Caroline Springs police station will be open 24 hours a day if the state Coalition wins the next election. The opposition made the pledge last week, saying the community has been crying out for extended hours at the station which currently closes for eight hours each night. Opposition police spokesman Edward O’Donohue said the area needed a round the clock police presence. “You can’t fight crime if the local police station is closed,” Mr O’Donohue said.
“People have a right to feel safe in their own homes.” The opposition said crime in the Melton Police Area has increased 17.8 per cent since the 2014 election, however the most recent crime statistics showed a 3 per cent improvement in the past 12 months. State police minister Lisa Neville said 16 extra officers were being added to the Caroline Springs force, and having police on patrol was more important than manning a station overnight. “Part of the decision of Victoria Police, and rightly it sits with them, is they want police out
on patrols,” Ms Neville said. “At the moment Caroline Springs gets a 24-hour service directly from the station, with a divvy van out on patrol all night … if Matthew Guy was to convince the chief commissioner that this was the way to go, that would mean that overnight patrol would be reduced. “I know in my meetings with residents that they want to see police out on patrol. Sitting behind a counter does not do that.” The Police Association said police numbers have failed to keep up with population growth. Secretary Wayne Gatt backed the opposition’s moves to extend the station’s hours.
“We know that a 24-hour police station that is open to the public provides a place of refuge for people in need of police support,” Mr Gatt said. “It’s common sense that a better resourced 24-hour station would be in a better position to serve the needs of the large and growing community at Caroline Springs. This is not a small country town, rather a busy metropolitan community. “The public want police when they call them and they draw comfort and security in knowing they can walk into their local police station and speak face to face with a police officer.”

Extended flu season hits hard Sunshine Hospital said anecdotally there were more cases of influenza this year compared with recent years, but could not provide specific numbers as testing is not conducted in all cases. The Department of Health and Human Services said there had also been a spike in flu outbreaks, particularly in aged care facilities, with 208 respiratory outbreaks notified this year compared to 104 for the same period last year. Victoria’s chief health officer Professor Charles Guest said with at least two months to

This year’s flu season could go down as one of the worst on record, with the state currently at the peak of a long season. More than 11,300 cases of influenza have been confirmed across the state, and Brimbank homes and business’s have not been immune. Medical One Taylors Lakes practice manager Kim Robinson said the flu season was getting longer every year and did not peak until August. “We haven’t been much busier, but flu season starts in March now so there are more cases
coming through,” Ms Robinson said. “I think people are more aware of it, and the strains of flu are more extreme so more people come through the doors. The season doesn’t peak until August so that is a long season.” Ms Robinson said it was pleasing to see vaccination levels increasing in line with the extended flu season. “We’ve had very high levels of vaccination, most of our patients come in and get a vaccine,” she said. “Vaccines are still the best preventative measure, along with good hand washing and hygiene.”
Parkwood Green Primary School pupils have been busy little munchkins making poppies and a set of the Emerald city for their upcoming school production. The whole school extravaganza, Journey Through Oz, hits the stage on November 1 and 2. Pupils have been preparing costumes and sets since June. Director Jacqueline Hermina said the junior school students had been supported by a dance troupe of their older peers. “The children are very excited for the show,” Ms Hermina said. She said there are two casts and all the students play a role in the show. The middle and senior school students have lead roles. “This is a wonderful celebration of how the school community comes together to tell a story and celebrate our children’s achievements,” Ms Hermina said. The production will be at the Quin Auditorium, Braybrook on November 1 and 2. Details: bit.ly/2wwI3Rl

Tributes flow for crash victim A young man killed when his monkey bike crashed into a fence, has been remembered as a “beautiful soul”, as his family pleads for others to ride safely on the roads. Ash Baker’s family pleaded with other bike riders to wear helmets after the 20-year-old was killed on Kurunjang Drive in Melton, not far from his home, about 4.30am on Saturday. Devastated family and friends, including Mr Baker’s sister, Jayd Martin-Cook, visited the crash site at the weekend to share their grief. “Nobody’s family deserves to feel the way we feel today … please wear a helmet,” she told Channel Nine. Shayden Baker paid tribute to his older brother on Facebook. “This has got to be the worst morning and day of my life, waking up to hear that my older brother has passed away early hours of this morning,” he wrote. “I’m lost don’t know what to do or say! I’d do anything to have you back here in my life bro, rest in peace.” Others remembered Mr Baker as a caring and protective young man. “With a heavy heart it’s sad to say that a beautiful soul was taken from us today,” a Facebook page set up in his memory says. Victoria Police spokeswoman Creina O’Grady said the crash happened when the rider left the road and struck a fence on Kurunjang Drive. “Police are investigating the circumstances,” Ms O’Grady said. The accident brings the total number of lives lost on Victorian roads this year to 172, which is 30 fewer than at the corresponding time last year.

go in the flu season it was important to remain vigilant. “The most common symptoms of the flu are sudden high fever, a dry cough, body aches, and feeling very tired and weak,” Professor Guest said. “Anyone sick with the flu should avoid visiting loved ones in aged care or in hospital, as it can spread quickly and be very serious. “Vaccination is also vital in stopping the spread of influenza. With about two months of the flu season to go, it is still not too late to get your flu shot.”

Rockbank Primary School pupils will be walking, running, scooting or riding their way to school as the weather warms up. Walk to School Month this October aims to encourage students to boost their physical activity, while helping children and their families establish active routines for life. Melton council is urging schools and families to get involved, sign up and run their own fun activities to promote walking, riding and scooting to and from school. Mayor Sophie Ramsey said the council would work with local primary schools to deliver a range of activities encouraging more families to get involved this October. “We’d love to see more families walking,
scooting or riding in the City of Melton to help local kids get active and build healthy habits, confidence and friendships,” Cr Ramsey said. “Walking to and from school is a great way for children to get active, while achieving the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity, every day. Students that walk, ride or scoot to school arrive more alert and ready to learn. “Walking also helps take cars off the road, which reduces congestion around schools and helps the environment.” Walk to School participants receive certificates and can win prizes. An article in Star Weekly last week “New hospital wins backing’, stated the Melton council announced a partnership with investment firm Freeman Group to deliver a public-private hospital for Melton. No such partnership exists. The council has not formally considered, nor entered into, any proposal for the establishment of public/private hospital with any third party. The council’s formal position is to seek the provision of a 24 hour general public hospital through the state government. Pups on patrol for vets By Esther Lauaki Melton pound pups could get their second chance at life working as therapy dogs for veterans in the west thanks to the Young Diggers program. The Young Diggers dog squad trains canine companions and assistance dogs to support serving and ex-serving Australian defence force members dealing with post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). At Melton council’s August meeting councillor Melissa De Santis asked officers to look into the possibility of allowing the Young Diggers program access to dogs in the pound.

The dog squad helps defence families to better - Carole Doyle cope
’’
The dogs would be assessed and retrained if they are suitable for the program. Young Diggers Victorian co-ordinator Carole Doyle said that dogs for the program are being brought from interstate at the moment. “This program helps more than just the individuals,” Ms Doyle said. “The dog squad helps defence families to better cope with the effects of PTSD and saves the lives of many rescued dogs. “Some of the guys on the program go shopping late at night because they don’t do well with crowds and having their companion with them gives them that extra support. “Dogs are having to be trucked down from Tamworth or Brisbane for training. “Otherwise, if veterans want to have their own puppy, they would purchase one and bring it to training twice a week.”
First Victorian recipient and liaison officer for Youth Diggers Ron Fenton with Yogi. (Shawn Smits)
Ms Doyle said the dog squad does not discriminate breeds but the dog must have the right temperament. “They can’t be aggressive,” she said. “Preferably, they should be desexed already but we ensure that they are desexed before they are trained up.”
She said more than 30 dogs have been trained in Victoria for the dog squad and more than 200 dogs are trained nationally. “Dogs are our number one priority and they need to be looked after well by their owners,” Ms Doyle said. Information: www.youngdiggers.com.au

Swooping birds let fly Swooping season for birds is upon us and walkers and cyclists are being reminded to beware. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is reminding locals that some bird species, including Australian magpies, have started to swoop people as part of their normal breeding behaviour. Senior wildlife officer Gary Dash said magpie swoopings at locations across Victoria have been reported over the past few weeks. “Being swooped by a territorial bird is no fun, but this is just normal bird behaviour and, if possible, the best response is to keep away from the area,” Mr Dash said. “As the weather starts to warm up, birds start breeding and we want people to be aware of swooping birds.” Native birds are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and it is illegal to harm them. “If you do end up in an area where there is a swooping bird, try to protect your head and eyes and move quickly through the area,” Mr Dash said. “Some of the places where people are most likely to be swooped are public spaces such as parks particularly where there are tall eucalypts.” DELWP encourages people to notify others in their area about swooping birds. Firewood collectors have been warned to stay within load limits and stick with properly designated areas. The spring firewood collection season on public land opened across Victoria on Friday (September 1). Acting regional forest management and roading co-ordinator Dave Pasztaleniec reminded residents that they must collect firewood only from designated collection areas and stay within collection limits. “This includes taking a maximum of two cubic metres per person per day and a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year,” Mr Pasztaleniec said. Updates about firewood collection, including the location of firewood coupes, are available online, he said. Mr Pasztaleniec said the environmental, land, water and planning department and Parks Victoria staff would patrol parks, forests and reserves to ensure people were doing the right thing. “Firewood collection is only permitted on public land during designated times of the year and from designated firewood collection areas,” he said. “The felling of any trees for firewood is strictly prohibited. “It is also illegal to sell firewood collected on public land without an appropriate permit or licence.” He said that people flouting the law faced fines of $634, or a maximum penalty of one year imprisonment or a fine of up to $7928 or both if the matter proceeded to court. Information the community may have about illegal removal of firewood for sale can be reported to 136 186. Information: bit.ly/2mk4pkJ
A young Melton netballer has set herself some big goals for the future and she’s on her way to achieving them after landing a spot on the state secondary schools squad. Grace Valele, 14, from Melton Secondary College, was selected for the School Sports Victoria under-15s team that will play in the Adelaide championships in December. “I’m really excited about being selected,” Grace said. “The training has been good so far, the coaches focus on what we need to improve on and let us know what we’re doing well.” Grace plays for the Melton South Panthers, Westside Saints and the Altona-based Bayside Netball Club to supplement her training with the state squad. Her mum Timu said netball is “in her blood”. “She’s the eldest of five children and she started playing netball when she was very small,” Mrs Valele said. The Samoan-born teen moved to Australia with her family five years ago from New Zealand and said her loyalties are torn between the three netball powerhouses. “I hope to go all the way with my netball and play professionally some day,” Grace said. “I think I might want to play for New Zealand in the future.” Esther Lauaki

Shared path gets green light By Serena Seyfort
Hector Bugeja is thrilled about the new shared path for Sunbury. (Shawn Smits)
A three-year campaign for a safer cycling and pedestrian crossing between Sunbury and Diggers Rest has been realised. The state government will fund a $1.1 million 500-metre shared path on the western side of Vineyard Road and the Calder Freeway overpass. Sunbury and Diggers Rest Bicycle Users Group member Hector Bugeja said the group had been calling for this “key bit of infrastructure” to be fixed for three years. “There’s huge development going on all
around there but you can’t cross the freeway,” Mr Bugeja said. “Why build a pathway that then stops before the bridge?” The VicRoads-managed path currently ends at Moore Road, about 200 metres short of the Calder Freeway overpass, forcing cyclists and pedestrians heading for Diggers Rest to cross onto the road. Mr Bugeja said the first time he crossed the overpass he didn’t feel comfortable taking the same route home. “I was appalled, the trucks were so close to us,” he said. Mr Bugeja said the death of a cyclist on
Vineyard Road the next day had reinforced the need for better cycling safety and “shocked [him] into action”. The group spokesperson and Sunbury resident said the new connecting path would be “a great start” to improving Sunbury’s cycling infrastructure. “I reckon this is the start of the start,” Mr Bugeja said. “There is a need for council to get serious about provision of bike markings on roads, and filling the various gaps in our current bike network.” Work on the path is expected to begin early next year.
Leading a dry argument Melton students are tackling the big issues for an upcoming kids conference about the environment. Kurunjang Secondary College students have been selected to present at the Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Conference in Melbourne next month and have chosen to focus on the world’s diminishing water supply. Supervising teacher Meli Panagiotidis said the two-day event aims to inspire future environmental leaders from local schools to discuss environmental issues and pledge their commitment to make a difference. “We’ve got a moral and ethical responsibility to instill a sense of social awareness in our kids,” Ms Panagiotidis said. “We want our kids to be able to think about the world around them and the water crisis suffered by millions of people around the world.
“We also want the children to think about how they can make a difference.” The eight year 9 students will raise awareness about the state of the world’s water supply and the 663 million people in the world who don’t have access to clean drinking water. This week they started fundraising for the Global Aid Network Australia’s Water for Life initiative with a goal to raise $5000 towards building a well in a rural village in Benin, West Africa. Main target achieved Three kilometres of 40-year-old pipeline has been replaced in Darley meaning fewer water disruptions for residents. The $950,000 project involved replacing the large water main on Gisborne Road between Lerderderg Gorge and Bences roads. It was part of Western Water’s capital investment program. Western Water general manager customer and community relations Graham Holt said the works involved a combination of open-cut trenches and boring underground to minimise impact on native vegetation.
“The new water main will mean fewer water main bursts for our customers,” Mr Holt said. “This means less likelihood of people’s water supply being disrupted, and less work for us in repairing damage caused by bursts.” Mr Holt said the project was completed ahead of time and with minimal disruption to traffic and residents. Work to restore the road verge to its original condition is due to start this month. Esther Lauaki

Doctor loses suspension appeal By Esther Lauaki
The eyes have it for this artist A Caroline Springs artist says she wanted to show people the world through her eyes in her latest exhibition. Audrey Buttigieg Cardona has 17 pieces on show at the Stepping Stone Cafe in Newport as part of the Hobsons Bay Art in Public Places tour which runs throughout September. The series of drawings mostly feature different eyes – a symbol she said reveals the emotion she felt at the time of their creation. “I’m obsessed with eyes,” she said. “I find that eyes are the window to emotion and it was my own emotion that I would depict in my work. “A lot of the pieces in the exhibit were created when I wasn’t able to conceive a child and I wanted to reach out to people and hope that they can relate to that.” In Malta, where Buttigieg Cardona is from, the eye is symbolic for warding off evil, she said. Buttigieg Cardona, an art teacher at Westbourne Grammar, said she became involved in the arts from a young age. Her exhibition also includes paintings and mixed media works. Art in Public Places is a month-long, multi venue celebration of art and ideas, in all their forms. Details: www.artinpublicplaces.com.au
(Dennis Manktelow)
A Caroline Springs doctor whose home clinic is under investigation has had her bid to lift suspension of her registration quashed by the Victorian Supreme Court. General practitioner Eiman Al Raheb last month appealed her suspension at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, saying she was the sole earner for her household and an ongoing investigation into her home clinic could take up to 18 months to complete. Dr Al Raheb’s registration was suspended by the Medical Board of Australia in December last year. In court, she argued that the tribunal misapplied the law when it upheld her suspension in January this year. But the Supreme Court on August 24 dismissed her appeal to have her registration lifted and modified so she could work in orthodox medical clinics again. A court document said Dr Al Raheb started consulting patients from an after-hours medical practice that she ran from home in 2015. A complaint was laid the following year with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) after a patient of Dr Al Raheb was hospitalised after receiving botox injections. AHPRA investigators later identified concerns relating to hygiene and infection control procedures, the storage of medication and patient notes, and the presence of multiple script pads at the home clinic. In dismissing the appeal, Judge Mary-Jane Ierodiaconou said for there to be an error of law, Dr Al Raheb had to establish that VCAT was bound to reach the opposite conclusion from upholding her suspension.

Walking into a new beginning By Benjamin Millar A group of western suburbs teens are in training for a gruelling test of mud, sweat and overcoming fears when they tackle Papua New Guinea’s famed Kokoda Track. The 19 young people will tackle the 96-kilometre challenge across rugged terrain next month alongside police from Melton, Brimbank, Wyndham and Maribyrnong. Sunshine Police Inspector Dave Byrt said the majority of the youth have faced significant challenges in their life. “A lot of them may distrust authority so the first part of this is building that trust,” he said. “If you can grab hold of a youth at the right moment when they are heading in the wrong direction, you can make a big difference.” Inspector Byrt said the program aimed to build social cohesion by re-engaging the youth with school, employment and community. The trips first began about a decade ago with police in Moonee Valley. “They were doing a leadership style program, we are focusing more on at-risk youth who may have had minor brushes with the law,” he said. “Hopefully it will give them a sense of meaning and build confidence.” Inspector Byrt said feedback from returned trekkers showed the true value of such an adventure. “They all have stated to a person that the program has had a significant impact in their lives,” he said. To help build the necessary trust and pave the way for the teamwork that will be required on the trek, Victoria Police formed a partnership with the Les Twentyman Foundation. Inspector Byrt said the foundation was already connected with the kind of youth they were looking to include in the program.
Teens in training to walk the Kokoda track next month. (Supplied)
“We brought them all in with their parents and explained what it was we are trying to achieve,” he said. “I would say 85 per cent of them are really keen and there are a few others that lack the confidence yet but they are coming around.” Training is already well under way, with weekend walks in places such as Brimbank Park already under their belt. “We are going to the MCG in a few weeks and will be marching up and down every step
there,” Inspector Byrt said. But nothing can quite prepare them for the heat, humidity, rain and cultural challenges that await. Inspector Byrt said these hurdles will all be part of what will cement the experience for those taking part. “We’ve got them out of their comfort zone, they are over there connecting with the Papua New Guinea villages, giving them a perception and understanding of how lucky they are in their lives in comparison,” he said.
As well as directly helping the 19 youths taking the journey, the idea is that the positive outcomes will flow on through families and into the community. Inspector Byrt said the police members taking part also relish the challenge. “Our members love the experience, what they love most is watching and seeing the change that can occur in the youth over there.” The team will be leaving for Kokoda at the end of next month.

MY PLACE John Bentley has lived in Melton for more than 40 years. He tells Esther Lauaki about his love for the community.
More trains at peak times on the Sunbury Line.
What is your connection to Melton? My wife and I moved to Melton in October, 1976, to escape living in a flat, to have a house and land for the same price as the rent in West Brunswick. We did not have any connection to Melton, but for a $40 loan repayment a week, we said, why not? We chose a block of land five minutes from the Melton railway station. Luckily for me, my family emigrated from England in 1966 when I was 12 years old to a land of wonderful opportunity.
Our plan was to move to Melton for three years and then move closer to the city. However, after 41 years we are still here in the same house. When we looked to move to the inner city, house prices increased and prices in Melton declined. We made what we now see as a very sensible decision to extend our house and stay in Melton where we have raised three successful children.
From 27 August, we’re updating train timetables and adding 10 new peak services each week on the Sunbury Line.
Tell me about your involvement with the Friends of Melton Botanic Gardens? I saw an ad in the community notices section of the local paper in 2004, saying there was a meeting of the Friends of the Melton Botanic that night. I thought, that sounds like a really great idea – to have a botanic garden in Melton. So I went along to the meeting. In August,

2005, I became group president and have been ever since. There is a wonderful team of people with a diverse range of skills and experience. It is marvellous to see the establishment and development of the Melton Botanic Garden. A visitor to the garden said to me that Melton Botanic Garden has put Melton on the map. What are you passionate about? Gardening, the environment and education. I

Currently I am on the Western Water community engagement group, but now tend to extend my involvement and promote Melton to a wider reach as I am on the Australian Association of Friends of Botanic Gardens committee and the Plant Trust committee, both being national associations. Where’s your favourite place to spend your time in the area? Funnily enough, it is at home where I can do gardening, woodwork and there is always something to repair around the house. After that, at the Melton Botanic Garden. What would people be surprised to know about you? That I have run eight marathons, including the London Marathon, though to look at me now you would not think it. Believe me, I was once really fit. What is the best thing about Melton?
have spent most of life working in the education sector, in secondary education including Melton Technical School (now Staughton College), RMIT TAFE and at Victoria University. At the Melton Botanic Garden, we continue to promote education through activities giving or enhancing people’s skills, supervision of TAFE students on work experience programs and working with schools and TAFE colleges to provide practical opportunities for teachers and students.
The people. I am constantly amazed by the people and groups I meet in the community and what others are doing and how passionately they are trying to make Melton a wonderful place to live. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? Better public transport, improve the access to more extensive healthcare and more bike tracks that would safely link us to Deer Park, Werribee and Bacchus Marsh.

The attention-to-detail in this beautifully presented family property begins with gorgeous front landscaping with slate-style stucco elevated garden beds and made-to-measure cast-iron window security, creating a sense of quality and craftsmanship. There are three separate living zones, a main bedroom with a big walk-in robe, three further generously sized and carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes, and a high-spec kitchen with walk-through pantry facing a large, tiled meals area. Every room is spectacular. This property has it all and has been master-planned for family comfort and space. It’s near the local forest and surrounded by other houses of equal standing. The large and well-optioned undercover back deck with fan leads to an in-ground pool with glass surround. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling and a powder room are inclusions.
All the hard work has been done with this partially-renovated property on a large block (about 500 squares) with main road frontage. Three good-sized bedrooms all have built-in robes. The main bedroom has a renovated en suite and walk-in robe. Pine floorboards in both bathrooms look fantastic. A huge back deck catches the afternoon sun in its elevated position. Cathedral ceilings, study, separate second living space and a separate kitchen and meals area are highlights of this spacious floor plan. New carpets have been installed as well as gas appliances, three split-systems and an alarm system. Complete the renovation by updating the double carport and finishing the landscaping to create a great family property.

that’s so big that it almost doubles the size of year-round living space. Another perk – among many – at this place is a cute outbuilding, close to the house, which would be great as a teen retreat, guest quarters or hobby studio; a storage area is attached. Others? How about the large garage/ workshop, other shedding, dog enclosures, a chook run and a fenced paddock? Now for the comfy, inviting house. It has entry to an expansive living area which has
polished hardwood flooring (also laid in the bedrooms), dado rails bisecting two-tone paintwork, and timber blinds on large, multi-paned windows. The flooring changes to classic slate in the kitchen and casual meals spot. A load of timber cupboards, granite benches and glossy splashback tiles snazz up the kitchen, which also has a stainless-steel 900mm cooker and dishwasher. Along with a study (or fourth bedroom),

38 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 5, 2017
SPORT Jets lay the foundations for a strong start to next year Western Jets have ended the TAC Cup season on a high note, winning three of their past four games. The Jets will particularly savour their 21-point victory over Calder Cannons in the final round at Rams Arena on Saturday, which saw them complete the double over their main rivals this campaign. “It’s a healthy rivalry that we’ve got,” Jets coach Torin Baker said. “There’s plenty of good off-field relationships that exist between the two groups and a lot of boys play footy against one another or go to school with one another. “We were really pleased with the way the boys competed in both games against them.” The most pleasing aspect for the Western Jets was the youth who drove the side to victory. Of the 22 players who sung the song, 15 were still eligible to play for the Jets next season. It was important for the Jets to send off their
departing top-age players in style, but Baker made no secret that he put a line-up out with a view to next season. The team included promising 16-year-olds Darcy Cassar, Ethan Bentley and Lachlan Rzanovski, the latter pair on debut. “That was exciting for the club,” Baker said. “We’ve had an eye to the future in the second half of the year.” It was Lachlan Fogarty who had the biggest impact for the Western Jets in his farewell game. Fogarty, a Vic Metro representative this year and a hot tip to be selected at this year’s AFL national draft, kicked three goals in a dominant display. “I thought it was a great way for Lachie to finish off his TAC Cup career,” Baker said. Tristan Xerri, a draft smokey, produced arguably his best performance of the season with two goals in a ruck-forward role.
Xerri has played some standout football for Vic Metro at the nationals and for Werribee Tigers as the 23rd man in the Victorian Football League, but he saved his best till last for the Jets. “I thought this was his best TAC Cup game for the year,” Baker said. “With some of the talls, they just get better and better with more footy, and his second half of the year has been very good.” In other news, Western Jets key forward Emerson Jeka was last week named in the elite NAB AFL Academy for 2017-18. Two Jets made the TAC Cup team of the year – Fogarty on the wing and Cameron Rayner at full-forward. Oakleigh Chargers star Jack Higgins took out the 2017 Morrish Medal for league best-and-fairest with 22 votes, two votes ahead of Brad Bernacki.
Sharks hunted down By Tara Murray Hillside has fallen two heartbreaking points short of an Essendon District Football League division 1 grand final appearance. Playing division 1 finals for the first time, the Sharks were looking to bounce back after being smashed by Glenroy in their semi-final. On Sunday, they faced Airport West, which defeated them in the final round of the season. Nothing separated the two teams until the final quarter, when the Sharks found themselves three goals ahead and appearing to have all the momentum. Airport West had other ideas, kicking three quick goals to regain the lead and keep it until the end. Matt Patane kicked a goal after the siren for the Sharks, but it wasn’t enough as they lost 13.9 (87)-13.8 (86). Airport West, which has come from fourth, will play Glenroy in the grand final this coming Sunday. Sharks director of football Cole Harvey said the manner of the loss was shattering. “We got ourselves into a really good position,” he said. “Credit to Airport West – they kept chipping away. They got three goals really quickly and the ball fell their way in the end. They stuck to their guns and came away with it.” Harvey said Jordan Sinclair was best on ground for the Sharks, while another youngster, Lachlan Rayner, fought hard in the ruck. Co-captain Victor Micallef was damaging in the middle of the ground. Brandon Coletta kicked four goals for the Sharks and was again a highlight reel with some good marks. Harvey said that despite the disappointment, he believed the Sharks would look back at the season as a success. “We were facing relegation from division 1 three years ago,” he said. “Now we find ourselves two points from a grand final. The goal was to play finals this year and to get the boys two finals. We did that.” Harvey said the club had re-signed the entire playing group, with the exception of Troy Stone, who is retiring. As well, the Sharks have re-signed 14 under-17 boys who will play under-19s next season and are starting to look at re-signing their under-19 players. Harvey said the club was in a good position. “We had three teams make preliminary finals and one team through to the grand final,” he said. “It’s been a pretty successful year.” The Sharks’ reserves team will face Taylors Lakes in the grand final on Sunday, with the Lions looking to win a fourth straight premiership.

Stallions brace for dual promotion bids Promotion is on the line for Spring Hills’ two senior sides heading into the final round of the FFV state league season. A win for the Stallions against Keilor Wolves in men’s state league 5 west would guarantee second spot and promotion. A draw or a loss would mean the Stallions would have to rely on third-placed Melbourne University losing or drawing with division winner Laverton Park. Stallions coaching director Tom Markovski said promotion this season would be a bonus after being relegated last season. “We started from scratch and got a lot of young boys in,” he said. “We changed the structure and put our coach in for the last half a dozen games last season. All but three of our players are 21 or under. “If we get promoted to state league 4, it’s an opportunity to keep developing. If we don’t get promoted this year, we’ll be disappointed and come back next year and win the league.” Markovski said Ben Klapsas, Yonas Sisay, Jake Greenhorn and Zac Hancock had thrived on the challenges thrown at them this season. The Stallions’ women need results to go their way to seal second spot in state league 3 west. Second place would earn Spring Hills a spot in a promotion play-off game. The third-placed Stallions need to win their final-round match against Strathmore and hope ladder-leader Point Cook can defeat or draw with second-placed Hoppers Crossing. Markovski said the club’s women’s program continued to be a focus. “Our women are the main aim and we are pushing to play in the NPL,” he said. “From our under-16s, 14 girls have played in our two senior teams. Six under-14 players have played in the under-16s. Our under-14 girls are undefeated. We have the facilities and a juniors set-up going which is better than some NPL clubs.” In other results, Melton Phoenix men’s side suffered a 1-0 loss to Golden Plains in state league 4 west. The loss ensures the Phoenix will finish last this season.

Centrals’ grand ambition By Tara Murray Melton Centrals have caused an upset for a second straight week and are now one win away from a Riddell District Netball League grand final. Centrals knocked off Rupertswood in wet conditions in double overtime a week ago, and early on Sunday it looked like they would have similar conditions against Macedon. The rain cleared and the court dried, but both sides had to handle a tricky wind at Romsey Park. It was the Centrals who handled the conditions the best and controlled three of the four quarters, going on to win 33-29. Centrals’ coach Randy Pereira said his side was starting to put its whole game together at the right time. “That’s sensational,” he said. “Last time we played them they scored 22-4 goals in one quarter and that was the difference in the game. “I said to the girls, there’s a lot of pressure on them today as they finished on top of the ladder and lost one game for the year. “I said just play our best netball and we’re a chance. The five new girls we got in this season are starting to hit their straps playing as a team. “Anything is possible.” Centrals were boosted pre-game with the news that star Cats’ goaler Chloe Wilson would miss a second game with illness. It meant that usual wing attack and Cats’ coach Ciara Stewart had to move into goals. Pereira said shutting down Stewart was the key to closing down the Cats. “The main thing is to stop Ciara as she’s the driving force behind them. The thing about having a coach on court, she can direct and encourage on there.” With the Cats other shooter Tara Burnip struggling with the wind, it meant the Cats had to play a line up in the second half they hadn’t used all year. In the end it didn’t work, with Centrals’ experience at goal showing through and it proved to be a key difference. The Centrals goalers shot at 77 per cent and had seven less shots than the Cats, who shot at 58 per cent. It was only a small period of time in the third quarter that Centrals struggled with their shooting and it was then that the Cats got back into the game. When they scored the first goal of the last quarter, scores were level and Pereira was nervous. “We had gone backwards,” he said. “I didn’t think they’d picked up. We turned the ball over, turned the ball over and turned the ball over. If we had continued that for the next centre pass it could have been diabolical, but we steadied and got the job done.” Defenders Catherine Hocking and Rachel Dovaston were named Centrals best, while Pereira said Jade Fisher had stepped up the past two weeks. Centrals now face Lancefield on Saturday for a spot in the grand final against Romsey. Centrals C-grade team faces Diggers Rest in a preliminary final.

Grand end to first season It was two from two for Caroline Springs Hockey Club, with both their women’s sides winning through to Hockey Victoria winter competition grand finals. After both women’s sides claimed the minor premiership in their first season, Caroline Springs wasn’t content with just making finals. They wanted grand final spots. The women’s top side, which competes in F-grade pennant, remains undefeated after a 7-0 win against Gippsland Bulls on Saturday. Holly Azzopardi and Laura Brown scored two goals each, while Aimee Jungfer, Fran Lennie, Megan Shadbolt and Lucy Steele also scored. Caroline Springs women’s coach Ron Shadbolt said the scoreboard didn’t reflect the game. “The scoreboard didn’t show that it was a tough contested game. “Some of the goals were high quality goals. I don’t think you would have stopped them in any league. “Narelle McMillan in the midfield had a huge work rate all day. Laura Brown scored two goals, but her defensive efforts stood out and Aimee Jungfer, one of our younger players, had a really good game. “Overall it was pretty good team effort.” It was a much closer affair for the metro B north-west against Powerhouse St Kilda. Jessica Spence scored the only goal of the game to seal a 1-0 win for Caroline Springs. Shadbolt said neither side had many chances to score. “It was a really even game and there was nothing between the two teams,” he said. “We got the lucky break and scored that goal, which I think we earnt. “The goal was at the 25-minute mark and no team looked liked scoring from then on. It was a team we hadn’t beaten all season. “I think we might see them in the grand final.” Both sides have the week off, before the grand finals the following weekend. Tara Murray

Diggers hopes rest on preliminary showdown Diggers Rest has quickly turned its attention to this weekend’s preliminary final against Rupertswood, after a semi-final loss to Macedon on Saturday. Not much separated Diggers Rest and Macedon in the Riddell District Football League second semi-final, but the Burras were made to pay for small mistakes. The Cats capitalised when needed, claiming the win 9.14 (68)-8.8 (56), to go through to their first grand final since 1975. Burras’ coach Shaun Sims said the match showed there was little between all the top sides. “We probably let ourselves down I reckon,” he said. “Some areas of the game, including the second 40 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 5, 2017
quarter, cost us, which was disappointing but the other three quarters were pretty good. “They defended extremely well again and are really organised around the ball … if you drop off your intensity and the things you have to look after, they will hurt you.” “We made some silly decisions with the ball and when to go to the ball and the man, and that hurt us a tiny bit too.” The Burras were left to rue a poor second quarter kicking with the wind, when the Cats outscored them. Most of that quarter they played with 17 men after Andrew Tyquin was yellow-carded. The Cats led by 13 points at the main break and extended it to 18 heading into the final quarter.
The Burras had plenty of the ball in the last quarter, but couldn’t find enough goals to hit the front. They reduced the margin back to 11 points and it could have quite easily been back under a goal when Matthew Krul marked right in front of goal. But Krul played on and was caught holding the ball and that ended the Burras’ chances. Mark Freeth kicked four goals for the Burras, while Krul and Stuart Clarke kicked two goals each, with no other player kicking a goal. Patrick Jackson and Freeth were the Burras’ best. Sims said the side would quickly regroup ahead of its preliminary final clash against Rupertswood on Saturday.
The Sharks held off Riddell in their semi-final. “For the majority of it, I think we played quite well but just let ourselves down,” Sims said. “The result will burn for some of the guys and hopefully they’ll respond this week. “You can see there’s not much in it, which is a positive thing.” Sims was hopeful that skipper Tom Gleeson would return to the side. They decided not to risk him on Saturday, with the side having the double chance. The Burras reserves will also play-off in a preliminary final after losing to Wallan. The Burras face the Sunbury Kangaroos in a rematch of last year’s grand final. Tara Murray

Devils close on grand final berth with disciplined win Darley had already been stunned by North Ballarat City in the Ballarat Football League this season, so it was determined to make sure it didn’t happen a second time in the sides’ elimination final on Saturday. The Devils dominated, never giving City a chance to get into the game. The Devils won every quarter in the 15.15 (105)-7.5 (47) win and are now one win away from a grand final appearance. Their coach, Heath Scotland, said they knew a good start was crucial. “It was a nice, even performance and everyone played their role or won their position,” he said. “The start was important and we wanted to capitalise on the slight breeze we had in the first quarter.
“We then had to restrict them in the second quarter, which we did.” The Devils led by 48 points at half-time and looked certain winners. But they weren’t taking any chances, with City having nothing to lose – for much of the season, City didn’t look like it would even make finals. A seven-to-six goal second half ensured the Devils got the win. Scotland said it was one of the most even performances his side had produced this season. “We knew North Ballarat would throw everything at us,” he said. “They have nothing to lose and we had to make sure we stuck to our structures. The backline held up strongly, the midfield was
good and the forwards put it on the scoreboard. It was a really even contribution.” Dane Grenfell was the best forward on the ground, kicking four goals. Luke Delahey kicked three goals and was named best-on-ground. Scotland said it was pleasing to come out of the match with no injuries. He said the side was starting to get the right team balance after plenty of changes due to injuries mid-year. Shane Page and Abraham Cameron are both chances to return for the side’s semi-final against Bacchus Marsh. The game will be held at Darley Park, instead of Ballarat where most games are held in the second week of finals.
Cobras’ flag bid on track By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh is in a prime position to make a second straight Ballarat Football League grand final after a convincing win against Lake Wendouree in its qualifying final. For a second straight year, the two teams faced off in the first week of the finals with the same result – a Cobras win. On Saturday, the Cobras did the damage early on before a third-quarter mini-comeback from the Lakers. The Cobras steadied in the last to secure a 14.14 (98) to 7.14 (56) win. Cobras coach Travis Hodgson was thrilled with the solid performance. “It was a really good win,” he said. “We had the running for most of the day. We were in a strong position at half-time … they came out hard in the third quarter and kicked three goals with the wind.

The Diggers Rest B-grade side created history on Saturday when it knocked off Rupertswood in its Riddell District Netball League second semi-final. No Burras netball team has beaten a Sharks side since they joined the competition in 2013. The Burras snuck home by the smallest of margins, winning 31-30 to seal a grand final spot. Defender Jorgia Leonard was named the Burras’ best. It was a good weekend for the Burras’ netballers, with their C-grade side defeating Macedon. That side will face Melton Centrals in a preliminary final.
Ballarat NL
Melton South and Bacchus Marsh have been knocked out of the Ballarat Netball League C and D-grade finals in the first week of finals action. In C grade, Melton South fell agonisingly short against Lake Wendouree in its elimination final, losing 29-28. There was also a thriller between Redan and Bacchus Marsh in C grade, with Redan winning 35-32. In D grade, Bacchus Marsh lost to Redan 27-22, while Melton South lost 35-24 to East Point. In under-19s, the Cobras defeated the Panthers 33-31 to win through to the semi-finals. Melton’s under-19 side, the club’s only team in finals, was knocked out 58-11 by North Ballarat City.
Both teams are in the same boat now

“We were still pretty confident, as we were three goals up at three-quarter time. We kicked four or five goals in the final quarter.” Jethro Calma-Holt made the most of his opportunities for the Cobras, kicking four goals from few possessions. Hodgson said Lachlan Phyland was best on ground for keeping in-form goalkicker Lucas Anderson to one goal. He said Dean Heta was the dominant big man on the ground, while Logan Blundell and Daniel Velden were also standouts. The win was soured by injuries to three key players. Simon Lafranchi’s season looks over after dislocating a knee. He left the ground in an ambulance. Jackson Bolton dislocated a shoulder and went to hospital, while Kane White injured a hamstring. Hodgson said the hamstring injury was on the minor side of things. The win sets up a semi-final match-up with arch-rival Darley, with the winner going through to the grand final. Hodgson said he’d been told it would be the first time the two rivals have played in a final. The game will be played at Darley Park, instead of in Ballarat, where second-week finals are normally held. Hodgson said he had no complaints with the game being played closer to home. “Hopefully, we play our best footy and get the job done,” he said. “Both teams are in the same boat now – fighting for a grand final spot. The four best sides are still alive.” Hodgson said the Cobras would have some selection headaches following Saturday’s injuries, with Western Jets duo Blake Graham and Nick Stuhldreier coming into contention.
A big crowd is expected to watch the two local rivals. Scotland said that who the Devils were playing was of little concern. “They’re no different to any other team,” he said. “We’ve put ourselves in the position to play off a for a grand final. “We cannot get ahead of ourselves. They beat us quite convincingly the last time we played them. “[But] If we play the footy we played yesterday, we are a good chance.” Meanwhile, the Devils’ reserves will play Melton South in an elimination semi-final, after losing to East Point 12.12 (84)-7.8 (50).
Ballarat FL
Melton South stunned the Sunbury Lions in their Ballarat Football League reserves elimination final on Saturday. The Lions led at half-time by 16 points, but couldn’t convert in front of goal in the second half, kicking 1.9. The Panthers made the most of it, coming from 21 points down at three-quarter time to win 10.10 (70)-6.18 (54). Jayden Vincent was named best-on-ground for the Panthers.
TAC Cup
Western Jets duo Cameron Rayner and Lachlan Fogarty were named in the TAC Cup team of the year on Sunday night. Rayner, who is tipped by many to go as the No.1 draft pick later this year, was named at full forward in the team, while Fogarty was named on the wing. Oakleigh Charger Jack Higgins was named the Morrish medallist for the competition’s best player, beating Calder Cannon Brad Bernacki by two votes. Dean Heta was the dominant big man on the ground. (Shawn Smits)
He said star midfielder Scott Sherlock was tracking along nicely and looked set to play again this season as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Hodgson said Sherlock would play on grand final day, if the Cobras make it, and more than likely be available for the preliminary final weekend, should they lose this weekend.
Meanwhile, the Cobras’ reserves are through to the semi-finals, defeating Lake Wendouree, 7.9 (51)-2.5 (17). With the Sunbury Lions losing, the Cobras will play East Point for a grand final spot. In the under-18.5s, the result went the other way, with the Cobras knocked out of the finals 8.6 (54)-4.7 (31) by Lake Wendouree.
