Top tips baa none The Diggers Rest pet show will be a celebration of all things four-legged, feathered, furry and fun. Animal lovers and their pets can learn about pet care services in the area and enjoy the festivities of the annual event. Awards and prizes will be presented to winners for best dressed, best trick and best behaved, as well as a competition for owners who resemble their pets. For those who are on the hunt for a fur baby, Melton Pound staff will be telling residents about how to adopt a pet. Among other highlights, Vision Australia and the Lions Club will give talks on seeing eye dogs and hearing dogs. Flu death shocks town Tributes continue to flow for a young Bacchus Marsh father who died of influenza last week – a victim of the most widespread epidemic in 15 years. Ben Ihlow, 30, was a healthy and devoted dad when he was struck down by the flu on what should have been his first Father’s Day with his baby son. Family and friends farewelled the devoted father last Thursday at his funeral in Bacchus Marsh. The family is well loved in the Moorabool community where Mr Ihlow worked at the local

supermarket and his wife, Samantha, works as a teacher. The couple welcomed their first child, Andrew, just 10 months ago. A Myrniong Primary School community group has launched an online crowdfunding appeal that has raised more than $29,000. “He was a warm and generous man with a loving wife and young son who is yet to turn one,” the online campaign said. “His death has come as a great shock to all and as a community we want to help support Samantha and the couple’s baby for their future.” Mr Ihlow’s uncle, Neil Adams, said the family was devastated by the loss of the “bubbly and bright man” who was in the prime of life.

“Everyone’s in shock, because it was so sudden,” he said. “He got sick on the Monday, just had a bit of a bug.” By Friday, Mr Ihlow’s condition had deteriorated and he was taken to hospital, where he died on Sunday. The state health department has declared this flu season the worst in years, with the number of confirmed cases up 81 per cent from 2016. Mr Ihlow’s death comes as an eighth person died after a flu outbreak at an aged-care facility in Victoria. More than 11,800 cases of influenza have been reported in Victoria this year. VicRoads spells it out for plates By Esther Lauaki Bacchus Marsh has topped the list of the most rejected customised registration plate applications in Victoria. In the past year to June, VicRoads has knocked back about 175 registration plate applications from residents on the grounds they were violent or offensive. Applications were also rejected if they sent the wrong message about public safety. Bacchus Marsh recorded the most objections

followed by Sydenham, Hillside, Taylors Hill and Delahey, and Berwick. VicRoads’ custom plates manager Brendon Wilson said about 25,000 new sets of customised number plates are sold each year. “While there are countless combinations to choose from, it is occasionally necessary to reject applications or withdraw certain combinations from use if they are deemed inappropriate for public display.” VicRoads’ screening process picks up inappropriate plate combinations which

stops the majority of unsuitable plates being processed. Among the combinations that did not pass the vetting process were MURDAR, DETN8R, PSYKOH and DRUNKN.

Mr Wilson said that applications were rejected if they contain inappropriate language, make inappropriate racial, religious or sexual references, contain physical or mental health references, a poor road safety message or misrepresent an authoritative body or agency. Drivers can return their plates to the nearest VicRoads office and be refunded if they have already been issued with a plate which is later deemed unacceptable. A pet groomer has been convicted over the fatal beating of a dog with a hairdryer at a Maribyrnong salon. Paul Rogers faced the Sunshine Magistrate’s Court recently on multiple animal cruelty charges over an incident at the Petbarn salon at Highpoint in April last year. The court heard that the dog died soon after the incident from the injuries. Rogers, who entered a guilty plea, was sentenced to three months imprisonment and ordered to perform 200 hours community work. He appealed the severity of the sentence and has been bailed pending the hearing of the appeal in November. The court disqualified Roberts from being in charge of an animal for the maximum 10 years. The RSPCA can monitor Roberts if there is cause to believe he may not be complying with the disqualification. The operators of the Petbarn grooming salon where Rogers worked immediately reported the incident to the RSPCA and Victoria Police. RSPCA prosecutor Daniel Bode said the RSPCA was able to put a strong case before the courts because of the full co-operation of the Petbarn business during the investigation, including the provision of CCTV footage. “We are appalled at the cruelty inflicted on this dog, and the betrayal of trust experienced by the dog’s owner who had left the dog in the groomer’s care in good faith,” Mr Bode said.

Man charged after fatal stabbing By Goya Dmytryshchak, Joe Hinchliffe Police have charged a 29-year-old Caroline Springs man following the stabbing death of a man at a restaurant on Saturday. It is alleged a brawl took place at a restaurant in Gourlay Road, Caroline Springs, about 2.15am where the victim, 31 year-old Burnside Heights man Deni Dimovski, was stabbed and died from his injuries. The 29-year-old has been charged with murder, affray and aggravated burglary. He was due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

The man who was killed has been remembered as a “beautiful man”. The fatal stabbing happened inside Korzo Grill House after an uninvited group allegedly tried to enter a private function. Detective Senior Sergeant Pixie Fuhrmeister said a brawl broke out about 2am after the venue owners tried to lock a group out of the Macedonian restaurant. The homicide squad detective said the group fled the scene on foot after the victim was stabbed multiple times, but they were believed to have several cars nearby. The restaurant’s owners, Jim and Jasmina

Ribarovski, said Mr Dimovski had been more than a loyal customer. “He was also a very close personal friend who unfortunately lost his life in the most tragic circumstances,” Mr Ribarovski said. “He will be sorely missed and never forgotten.” A worker named Coby said Mr Dimovski had become like family. “He was a beautiful man,” she said. “Deni was a very respectful guy, he always looked after us girls at the Korzo Grill House. Deni was always full of light, he was a fun man and loved to party.

“He’s a long way from home in such a tragic time, but we will always remember Deni and he will forever be in all of our hearts.” Emergency services were called to the Gourlay Road restaurant about 2.15am Saturday. Paramedics attempted to treat Mr Dimovski at the scene but he died shortly afterwards. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is being urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Fire closes creek centre Police are investigating a fire that destroyed part of the Arnolds Creek Community Centre building in Melton last week. Firefighters called to the centre on September 3 were able to contain the blaze to the storeroom and one of the community rooms. Maternal and child health services and kinder programs at Arnolds Creek Community Centre were cancelled the following day. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said she was disappointed the facility would not be available for community members to use until the damage was repaired. “We are incredibly disappointed this has occurred at one of our community facilities,” Cr Ramsey said. “We are urging anyone who may have seen anything to contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers.” Community groups who use the rooms were

assisted with alternative arrangements. Cr Ramsey said Melton council was still determining the extent of the damage, but she anticipated the community room and storeroom would not be accessible before eight to 12 weeks at the earliest. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au Esther Lauaki

Guilty plea on airport hoax calls A hoaxer who used a $300 hand-held radio to abort a plane landing at Melbourne Airport revelled in his ill-gotten fame on YouTube before he was arrested by police, a court has heard. Former baggage handler Paul Sant, 20, admitted making five hoax transmissions to Virgin, Jetstar and Qantas planes in October last year, as well as one mayday call to the airport’s air traffic control centre. All of the calls were ignored by pilots and officials, except for a transmission on October 27 in which Sant asked Virgin flight 740 to “go

around” as it was preparing to land. The plane aborted the landing before touching down without incident 15 minutes later. The Australian Federal Police said the radio calls, on three separate frequencies, had the potential to cause a major aviation incident with a threat to human safety. Sant was later captured on a police listening device speaking with his friends about the hoax transmissions, which had been reported in the media. Sant pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court last Tuesday to one charge of endangering the safety of an aircraft in flight

and another charge of making a fake mayday call that could endanger the safety of another person. He was arrested at his Rockbank home on November 21 last year. Phone taps leading up to his arrest were detailed in a prosecution summary tendered in court. In a police interview, one of Sant’s friends said that Sant had admitted making the calls from a lookout point at Sunbury. Friends also told police that Sant said he had thrown the $300 radio into a lake at Caroline Springs. Photos of hand-held radio transmitters linked

to eBay and Gumtree were also found on Sant’s phone. The court previously heard that Sant has autism. He has also undergone psychological testing and had been linked with a disability support worker. Sant’s bail was extended and he will appear before the County Court for a plea hearing in February. His bail conditions include not using a radio device and not being allowed to come within 2000 metres of an airport.

Honouring their memory A new World War I memorial in Melton pays tribute to the soldiers and medical staff who served in the great war. The memorial, outside the Melton Country Club, will be dedicated on September 24. Melton Returned and Services League secretary Kevin Murray said the statue, which depicts the silhouette of a soldier and a female nurse, was a poignant reminder of the role that local men and women played in the war. “It’s symbolic of all of those who served in World War I,” Mr Murray said. “It’s a reminder that we did have ladies that put their lives in danger to nurse those soldiers back to health. “Many of the casualties during the war were because of sickness … they were standing in mud and water and there were all kinds of illnesses spread around … the medical staff, a lot of whom were women, played a significant role in saving their lives.”

Mr Murray said the memorial to remember those who served, and to honour those still serving, has been five years in the making. The $20,000 project was funded thanks to an Anzac centenary grant from the veterans’ affairs department in 2015. “There is a quote on the memorial which says, ‘All gave some, Some gave all, Some are still giving’ – I think it’s a fantastic tribute to our servicemen and women,” Mr Murray said. Gun amnesty hits bullseye By Serena Seyfort More than 260 firearms have been surrendered in Melbourne’s north-west in the first two months of a firearms amnesty. Since the National Firearms Amnesty started on July 1, Victorians have turned in 2150 rifles, shotguns and handguns, on top of a number of bladed weapons, imitation firearms and ammunition. Melbourne’s north-west, stretching from the CBD out to Whittlesea, accounts for 269 of those firearms. Sunbury Firearm Supplies licensee holder

Grant Coppinger said the shop had collected “probably a dozen [firearms] a week since the amnesty started”. Mr Coppinger said he wasn’t surprised by the number of guns being turned in, with most being “old farm guns” that had likely been inherited. Victoria Police licensing and regulation division superintendent Paul Millett said that so far, Victoria’s amnesty results were the most pleasing in a decade. “These results are very encouraging,” he said. “This is more than 2000 firearms that would otherwise be at great risk of ending up

in the wrong hands.” Superintendent Millett is encouraging people to continue to surrender unregistered firearms in the last month of the amnesty. Firearms, weapons and ammunition can be surrendered to a licensed firearms dealer without fear of prosecution until September 30. Mr Coppinger said handing in firearms was a simple process, with no questions asked. “It’s a complete amnesty,” he said. “So it’s pretty much just walk in, place a gun on the counter and walk out.” To find a nearby licensed firearms dealer, visit www.firearmsamnesty.ag.gov.au

Better health for refugees

Let’s help Melton and Caroline Springs Police. If you have any information in relation to these people, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or your local police station.

Newly arrived refugees will get a better understanding of Australia’s health system and the services they can access thanks to a new program starting soon in the western and northern suburbs. The Bedaya Sehaya Refugee Healthy Living program, run by the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) and cohealth, will train staff from Syrian and Iraqi backgrounds to provide refugees with information about the health system in culturally appropriate ways. The program will target newly arrived refugees living in Brimbank, Melton and Hume. NWMPHN acting chief executive Julie Borninkhof said the three municipalities were chosen because of the high number of refugees living in them. The program will use Arabic and Assyrian-speaking health workers to help new arrivals understand the health services and which services can be of assistance to them. Ms Borninkhof said refugees were affected by distinct health issues related to their experiences, both before and after arriving in Australia, and might need additional support to access the health system. “That’s why we are engaging bicultural workers in both the design and delivery of this program, so it has the best chance of overcoming the language, cultural and experiential barriers,” she said.

Socially, it was always going to change from what was a dormitory town to what is now going to be a vibrant small township. With that comes some problems, the main ones being traffic. The other concern is the provision of services.

Both of us have been executive members of Northwest FM (based in Glenroy). I am also the president. We love travelling, as well.

Tell me about your how you became involved with the Diggers Rest Residents Association (DRRA)? I became involved very early when there was a residents’ protest about a proposed caravan park. I’ve always been a person very close to residents’ concerns, having been in local government for 31 years. I became a member of the DRRA after the objection to the caravan park, and later became the president for the first time in 2006 and have been ever since. Where did you serve in local government? I spent three and a half years in local government at Swan Hill and another 27 and a half years in what was then the City of Broadmeadows, later to become City of Hume. What are residents’ main concerns in Diggers Rest? We’ve got a lot of issues in Diggers Rest. When we first moved into the area, there

What would people be surprised to know about you? A lot of people don’t know that I had military service. I spent six years in the Royal Australian Survey Corps. I was working on air photographs, preparing map models and preparing maps of Vietnam prior to the formal introduction of troops into the country in 1962. What is the best thing about Diggers Rest? It is a town removed from the larger centres, but accessible enough to them. It is quiet and convenient to the freeway.

With five separate living areas, this house is big on family living. On a large block within Arnolds Creek estate, its location is also standout – close to Woodgrove Shopping Centre and within safe walking distance of schools. Open the front door and be instantly welcomed by a stately sense of space. Bulkhead detail in the downlit entryway ceiling is a nice touch. A sitting room, theatre room and kids’ retreat, plus two living rooms flanking the kitchen, mean there’s plenty of room for everyone. The kitchen is high-spec with walk-in pantry, stainless-steel appliances, dishwasher and stone benchtops. Step outside to an undercover decked entertaining area looking out to a massive backyard, with scope to create the entertainer’s area of your dreams. With solar panels, ducted heating, evaporative cooling, study and a double garage with rear access, this has it all.

On a big block, this well-maintained property is in a pocket of suburbia revered for its proximity to Toolern Creek Reserve – and this residence backs onto it. The house is large, providing room for everyone and quiet spaces for downtime. Enter to the sitting room, currently used as a library-cum-sitting room with a fan and carpeting. The pot-belly stove adds warmth and ambience. There are three fitted bedrooms, the main with en suite and access to a spa room. The kitchen has been updated and is adjacent to the generous meals area. An open-plan family entertaining area follows with a bar and another wood heater. French doors lead to the deep undercover entertaining area. Paving and an established garden creates a relaxing atmosphere and there is also a shed out here. Ducted heating and split-systems are included.

When this owner-designed house was built in the mid-1980s, it was with an extraordinary attention to detail, a European sensibility and unstinting use of “the best of the best” materials. It’s a place that will probably remain solid for the next 100 years and beyond. As a creation of its era, there’s plenty of slate and exposed brickwork, as well as Italian tiling and beautiful wood in the form of jarrah, mahogany, cedar and New Guinea rosewood. Axminster carpet puts in an appearance,

as do ornate cornicing, ceiling roses and glass chandeliers. Preceding the “true” front door, there’s a big, slate-floored room with fly-wired arched windows – an ideal summer room to link with the velvet lawn and gardens out front. Double doors to the right of a large foyer open to a big lounge room, with a second set of double doors to a dining room. This connects with the kitchen, which has a long, deep jarrah bench serving the massive adjoining family/games room (with wood heater), while rosewood cabinetry and

walk-in pantry deliver plenty of storage, and all mod-cons are accounted for. Ranged around a study/sitting room are three fitted bedrooms, including the main which has a large walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with spa. The gleaming main bathroom is also along here. Another privately zoned bedroom, ideal for guests, has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Off the games room, there’s a giant alfresco area under gabled roof and shade sails, closed at one end by a high stone wall. Tropical plants put on a dazzling show

amid baby tears ground cover, and water cascades down into a pond. The block of about 6070 square metres has an olive grove, fig orchard and every kind of citrus fruit – watered from a gravity fed reticulated system and delivering a harvest valued at a minimum of $8000 p.a. Other attractions include electric shutters, alarm, ducted heating, workshop and shed, 90,000 litres of tank water, solar system, a seasonal dam and double garage. 43 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 12, 2017

SPORT Giant killers Melton Centrals miss that extra step It was a bitter sweet ending to Melton Centrals season in the Riddell District Netball League on Saturday. Disappointed that they couldn’t go one step further and make a grand final, Centrals coach Randy Pereira knows that most people didn’t expect them to get as far as they did. “I kept saying to the girls that if they played their best netball they could match it with anyone,” he said. “No one expected us to beat Rupertswood in double overtime and no one thought we would beat Macedon, who lost one game for the regular season. “We’ve got further than most people thought. The last two weeks have been a blast.” The good times ended with a 55-46 loss to Lancefield in the preliminary final on Saturday. Like so many times this season, Centrals were punished for one poor quarter. Take out the second quarter, and Centrals outscored the Tigers by one goal. Pereira said the most frustrating thing

was that they didn’t make the most of their chances. “When you are in the game and had opportunities but don’t make the most of them that leaves you a bit flat,” he said. “We played some really good netball. We started off well but couldn’t maintain it. “They scored 18-8 in the second quarter and that was the difference. It was an even game in the second half. “Every game, even against the lower teams, we’d have a quarter or two of quite poor netball and even against Macedon last week we had a poor third quarter.” Not helping the cause of Centrals was star shooter Rebecca Morabito pulling out of the game after half-time due to illness. Morabito won her third Ryan Medal for the league’s best player during the week. Pereira said they did think about putting her back in the last quarter in goal shooter, but decided not to. Vanessa Seddon who came on and replaced

Morabito was the best of the Centrals shooters with 20 goals. Rita White-Kay, who had to move from her usual goal shooter role to goal attack in the second half, was named Centrals’ best. The season is also over for Centrals’ C-grade side which lost its preliminary final 24-18 against Diggers Rest. Pereira, who looks set to coach in the league for a 10th year, has already started looking ahead to next year. “We’ll look to have trials earlier than we normally do as we were one of the later ones and all the players had gone,” he said. “We’ll be looking to add a couple more players and we’ve got some players from B-grade that can come up as well.” Tara Murray Rita White-Kay on her way to being named of Melton Centrals’ best. Cobras feel the pain By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh has experienced grand final heartbreak in the AFL Goldfields’ Women’s Football League. Having played their best football in the past month, the Cobras thought they were a good chance against Carisbrook on Sunday in the division 2 grand final. It wasn’t to be for the Cobras, who were easily beaten 8.16 (64)-3.3 (21) and held goalless in both the first and last quarters. Cobras coach Hayley Gossow said the club was shattered by the loss. The Cobras had beaten Carisbrook in the semi-finals two weeks before. “We finished the season so well,” she said. “We beat them twice and thought we would be a really good chance. It hurts and it should hurt.” Gossow said the Lions proved to be too strong in the midfield and were able to control the game. 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 12, 2017

She said the Lions’ bigger bodies played a part in their midfield dominance. “Their running was outstanding and we couldn’t go with them,” she said. “They played fantastic today. They won the ball on the turnover, their transition was brilliant and they helped out their teammates. “We couldn’t get our hands on the ball – and when we did, we didn’t use it well.” Emily Crawford kicked two goals for the Cobras, with Madalyn Clarke scoring the other goal. Crawford, who has been a standout all season, was named the Cobras’ best along with Elise Korteman. Gossow said that despite the disappointing end to the season, they would take a lot out of the year. “Regardless of what we’re feeling now, it’s been a success,” she said. “We started so slowly and had a few bad losses early on. We had a couple of first-year players and some girls

couldn’t kick a footy. To play in a grand final shows the work that everyone has done.” Gossow said it wasn’t just the playing group that deserved the recognition, but also the rest of her coaching team. “Success is due to a whole team,” she said. Gossow said this year, the first they’ve won a final, would be the beginning of something exciting. “Next year we’ll be greater than ever,” she said. “We don’t want to feel like this again.” North Geelong claimed the division 1 title, going through the season undefeated. The day was a tough one all round for the Cobras, with their under-13 side losing the Riddell junior girls grand final. In a low-scoring match, Centrals held on to win 2.3 (15)-1.5 (11) despite not scoring in the second half. Tamara Henry kicked the only goal for the Cobras, while Matilda Woods was named the side’s best.

There was joy for the Spring Hills men’s side and disappointment for the women’s team in the final round of the FFV state league soccer season. The men’s side secured promotion with a 2-0 win against Keilor Wolves on Saturday in state league 5 west. Jarrod Febbraio and Halil Hussein scored for the Stallions. The win, the Stallions’ 16th of the season, sealed second place and the second promotion spot. They finished two points behind Laverton Park. This season has been a big improvement on last season, when the Stallions were relegated from state league 4 west – the competition they will return to next season. Meanwhile, the Spring Hills women’s side had to settle for third place in state league 3 west. To finish second, the Stallions needed a win in the final round and for Point Cook to win in the top-of-the-table battle with Hoppers Crossing. Second place would have given the Stallions the chance to play off in at least one, and possibly two, promotion play-off games. The Stallions did their part by defeating FC Strathmore 1-0. Yasemin Berkant was the goal-scorer. Hoppers Crossing upset Point Cook 2-1 to claim second spot. The Reds finished one point ahead of the Stallions. The result didn’t matter for Point Cook, which was already assured of the title and promotion. Meanwhile, Melton Phoenix finished a tough season on a high in state league 4 west. In a battle between the bottom two sides, both of which will be relegated, the Phoenix took home the points against Newmarket Phoenix by winning 5-0. Despite the win, the Phoenix finished the season last with just two wins for the year. Tara Murray

Cooke crowns return to footy with a best and fairest A refound love of football for Macedon’s Jason Cooke has helped him take out the Riddell District Football League’s top honour. A talented junior with the Sunbury Lions, Cooke was part of the Calder Cannons before injuries took a toll. He played one season at Pascoe Vale before giving up the sport. He even spent six months playing soccer. A few mates and a persistent Macedon president Terry Kernan persuaded Cooke to play for the Cats at the start of the 2015 season. As the Cats have built, they are in the grand final this year, Cooke’s game has also continued to go to new levels. On Wednesday night he claimed the RDFL’s Bowen Medal for the league’s best and fairest. It was a low scoring count that had the crowd captivated, with several players in the mix heading into the final rounds. Cooke won the medal on 16 votes, one clear of Sunbury Kangaroos’ Tierone Cuffe.

It’s the second time Cuffe, who missed three games with injury and played the final rounds with a broken foot, has finished second. The top 11 players were separated by six votes. Cooke said winning the medal was quite overwhelming. “Obviously I had a good year but didn’t expect to win the competition medal, I’m very humbled to win that. “I was a bit nervous, there was a couple of games I didn’t think I played well but I polled, it was quite nervy. “It does help when Matty Dick and Dan Markworth and those boys come back. “I felt like I wasn’t doing too much up in the forward line, just kicking all the goals. It was a great team effort and I couldn’t do it without the boys.” Cooke’s year corresponded with a move to the forward line. Cooke also claimed the leading goalkicker award after kicking 77 goals during the regular season.

He still spent about a quarter of game-time in the midfield. Cats coach Jeff Andrews said if Cooke had played forward permanently he would have kicked 100 goals for the year. Cooke said the decision to play with the Cats saved his football career. A premiership in a week’s time would be icing on the cake. “It’s been an unbelievable three years and I’ve enjoyed every single minute and I’ve got a passion for footy again. “It has been a long time between drinks for Macedon … I haven’t played in a grand final in six or seven years. “It’s great to be in the grand final and we have confidence in how we are going. It’s very special and I can’t wait for two weeks time.” Tara Murray Jason Cooke was a shocked winner of the Bowen Medal. (Shawn Smits)

Wise heads win the day By Tara Murray It was a couple of experienced campaigners who rose to the top in the Riddell District Netball League Ryan Medal on Wednesday night. Diggers Rest playing coach Amy Carroll and Melton Centrals’ gun shooter Bec Morabito were named joint winners after an exciting count. The two finished on 21 votes, three votes clear of last year’s winner Macedon’s Ciara Stewart. It’s the third straight year that the top award has been taken out by players aged 30 or above. This year’s top three placegetters are all mothers. Carroll and Morabito joked they played so well because they were enjoying the time away from kids. Both were shocked to win the medal. It’s the third time Morabito has won the medal. She previously won it in 2009 and 2011 and is the only player to win it more than once. “I think the wise heads win and it’s about the smarts which we both have,” she said.

“It’s a real honour and I put it completely down to my teammates, I can only do so much by myself and I’ve been lucky to be in really good teams. “This a complete surprise, I didn’t give myself a half a chance.” Morabito said making the award more special was that her family was involved at Centrals as well. Her dad, Randy Pereira is the A-grade coach while her sister Taylor-Jane Pereira is making her way through the ranks. Carroll said winning the medal, named after Diggers Rest legend Janine Ryan, was special. Carroll also took out the Western Water player of the year, as voted by the coaches. “It’s really exciting and I didn’t actually think I would be in the mix this year,” she said. “I thought last year I would have been and got runners-up. This year was a big surprise. “I’m thrilled to achieve this.” Both players said they were unsure what they’re netballing future held. “I was thinking of retiring,” Carroll laughed. “I’m not sure, I’ll just celebrate this and maybe

play for a couple more years if my body can hack it.” Morabito said, “We’ll see what happens. My daughter starts school next year and I’ll see how that schedule fits in. “Let’s just think about Lancefield this weekend and then think about next year.” Both Carroll and Morabito were named in the Western Water Team of the year. Carroll was at goal attack and Morabito on the bench. Romsey’s Sarah Szczykulski, Macedon’s Janelle Birch, Chloe Wilson and Katie Clarke, Lancefield’s Anica Scherer and Tahnysha Salanoa, Diggers Rest’s Natasha Chokljat and Rupertswood’s Prue Stanley were the other members of the team. Ciara Stewart was named coach of the year. Rupertswood’s Hayley Matthews won the rising star award. Woodend-Hesket’s Taylah Ranieri won the under-19 best and fairest award, Diggers Rest’s Toni Fogarty took out the C-grade award and Macedon’s Kym Grant and Romsey’s Katie Gould shared the B-grade award.

Diggers Rest won’t feature in the Riddell District Football League grand final for the first time since 2012. As the most consistent team over the past five years, the Burras were working towards a second straight premiership after breaking their drought last year. It wasn’t to be as they were knocked out in Saturday’s preliminary final against Rupertswood. Only one point separated the two teams at half-time, but the Burras were inaccurate in front of goal with four more scoring shots. The second half belonged to the Sharks, who led by nine points at three-quarter time and then kicked the first four goals of the last quarter to seal the win. The Burras kicked a late goal through Mark Freeth, but it was too little too late, with the Sharks winning 10.7 (67)-5.12 (42). Michael Evans was the only multiple goalkicker for the Burras with two goals. Evans was named their best, with Sean Egan and Stuart Clarke also providing contributions. The Sharks now face Macedon in the grand final on Sunday. The loss added to the Burras’ pain on Saturday, after their reserves lost their preliminary final to Sunbury Kangaroos. Like the seniors, the reserves were looking for back-to-back premierships, but won’t feature in the final game of the season. The Kangaroos led from start to finish and did most of the damage in the second half. They kicked seven goals to two in the second half, to win 14.12 (96)-6.3 (39). Robert Burns was named the Burras best, with no player kicking multiple goals. Tara Murray 45 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 12, 2017

Bacchus Marsh bows to pressure in epic loss For Bacchus Marsh, everything that could go wrong did go wrong in its preliminary final loss to Darley. The reigning Ballarat Football League premier produced its worst performance of the past two seasons, shown up by a flying Darley side. The Devils got the jump early and finished the game off with the last eight goals to win 18.18 (126)-3.10 (28). The Bacchus Marsh loss was compounded by injuries and a red card to star forward Jarrah Maksymow. Cobras coach Travis Hodgson said it was a bad day all round. “Credit to Darley – no excuses, they were the better side all day,” he said. “They started ferociously and we weren’t able to go with them. “Even when both sides had 22 fit players at the start of the game, their intensity was a lot higher. They took their game to another level from the home-and-away season.” The Cobras had to play the second half of the game with no bench.

Kane White hurt his knee in the third minute of the game, with doctors believing he’s torn his ACL. Trent Angwin, who was returning from a hamstring injury, re-injured the same hamstring in the eighth minute of the game. Matt Denham then hurt an ankle, leaving the Cobras with one player on the bench. That became none at all when Maksymow received his red card in the second quarter. The Cobras had to play short for a period and Maksymow couldn’t return to the field. He will face the tribunal this week. Hodgson said even without all the injuries, the result wouldn’t have been different. “Our bad luck had no bearing on the result,” he said. “It probably added to the margin as the game blew out late, as we were shot.” Hodgson said they had already discussed the game and were looking forward to this week’s preliminary final with Lake Wendouree. The Cobras lead the head-to-head match-up tally between the two sides this season at 3-0, with the most recent match being in the opening round of the finals.

Hodgson said they would take some confidence from that. “I think we are capable of bouncing back,” he said. “We’re focusing on the positives now. “We know each other really well – we’ve played more footy against them than anyone else the last couple of years. “Both teams understand each other. We know there’s a lot of question marks over us. It’s a good chance to show some character.” Hogdson said that while it looked like they would lose four players, they would have at least two players back from injury, with Scott Sherlock and Billy Griffiths looking set to return. The Devils’ reserves won straight through to the grand final. Tara Murray Alec Del Papa takes a strong mark on a disappointing day for Bacchus Marsh. (Shawn Smits)

No doubting for Darley By Tara Murray Darley is through to its second Ballarat Football League grand final in three years, with an empathic preliminary final win over arch rival Bacchus Marsh. A match locals were looking forward to at Darley Park in front of a big crowd turned out to be a fizzer. The Devils dominated for the opening bounce and if not for poor kicking at goal, the game could have been all but over at quarter-time. It was all done at half-time, with the Devils leading by 43 points. In the second half, the Devils romped home, kicking the last eight goals of the game to win 18.18 (126)-3.10 (26). Devils’ coach Heath Scotland said his team took it up another level on Saturday. “Everything went to plan and the players executed it perfectly,” he said. “The result, more so than the margin, was the important thing. We were happy with how we played. “We played the way we wanted to play. We didn’t play well last time we played Bacchus Marsh, I think a few guys wanted to make a statement.” Scotland said they were happy with how they started the game, but were wary about how last year’s premiers would respond. However, he was thrilled his side kept the foot to the pedal and didn’t let the Cobras get into the game “When we’re in the right mindset we are a really good defensive side,” he said. “We were hungry yesterday. We were realistic though that Bacchus Marsh is a good side and they had a bad day.” Leigh Spiteri kicked four goals for the Devils, as half the side got on the scoreboard. Zak Butters, who returned from playing with the Western Jets, was named the Devils best. Dan Roy and skipper Shane Page, who were both late inclusions, having recovered from injuries, were also among the best. Bacchus Marsh coach Travis Hodgson said Scotland was clearly the best player on the ground, despite not being named in the best. Scotland said besides the natural sore bodies from playing football, they had again come away without any injuries. The Devils will have some selection dilemmas come grand final day with Chris Graham, Dane Grenfell and Tom Evans all late withdrawals from Saturday’s match. All three are expected to be in the mix for the final game of the year. The Devils now have the week off and await the winner of the preliminary final between Bacchus Marsh and Lake Wendouree. Scotland said the weekend off would give players a chance to freshen up. 46 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 12, 2017

Caroline Springs has appointed former AFL player Brodie Holland as coach for next season. Holland, who played for Fremantle and Collingwood, has previously coached at local level, leading Maribyrnong Park between 2009-14. He coached them to two premierships. Holland replaces Marc Raak. Raak, who will remain as football director, said the club was delighted with the appointment. “When it came across our table and we made inquiries, I rang him and thought we’d go through the process and have a bit of a chat and it sort of snowballed,” Raak said. CX-3 destined to remain a fave By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring If cars were creatures, the Mazda CX-3 would be a lady beetle, with distinct shape and standout colouring, buzzing around lush green meadows or summer gardens in full bloom. However, forget the bucolic backdrop – this pretty little sports utility vehicle is most at home in bustling urban centres. So much so it has become a market leader since it first came to Australia in March, 2015. Following in the tracks of the Mazda2 light car, addition of i-Activsense safety technology makes the latest CX-3 update the first vehicle in the small SUV segment to offer smart city brake support forward and reverse as standard equipment across the range of Neo, Maxx, sTouring and Akari models. Further safety inclusions are blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard on the Maxx, while sTouring and Akari variants also get driver attention alert and traffic sign recognition. Power comes courtesy of a 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol or a 1.5-litre Skyactiv-D diesel engine mated with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with a choice of front or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $20,490, plus on-road costs, for the petrol Neo. The test vehicle was a 2.0-litre petrol Maxx automatic AWD, which comes to market at $26,890. Based on Mazda2 hatchback underpinnings, the CX-3 holds firm to the maker’s Kodo Soul of Motion styling, with the body flowing from a sturdy front, through a sleek centre section to a robust rear end. Headlight layouts vary from model to model, with the test Maxx favouring a layout that puts the turn signals outside the main headlamp unit to create a narrow, sharp design.

Upgrades should help the Mazda CX-3 stay at the forefront of the small SUV segment. (Supplied)

Cosy but not cramped is the best way to describe the CX-3 cabin, an opinion enforced by the limited views outside from a short ration of glass all round. Boot space, at 264 litres, is also limited, although, with rear seat backs folded, expands

to a usable 1174 litres. The new steering wheel is a direct lift from big brother CX-9, with three levels of switches from the previous model being integrated into one level to match the way fingers move. The test CX-3 Maxx took advantage of

Mazda’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G petrol engine with stop/start. It was mated with a six-speed automatic transmission and had all-wheel drive. Sensors are always on the ball with road conditions, even when they switch suddenly,

such as when the car drives through a puddle of water on the highway. A new forward sensing camera is designed to automatically apply the brakes in response to someone suddenly appearing at an intersection or from behind parallel-parked vehicles while driving at speeds of approximately 10km/h or more, while rear bumper-mounted ultrasonic sensors help mitigate collision damage when reversing. Fuel consumption hovers about 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/ highway cycle, according to Mazda. The test all-wheel-drive vehicle came up with figures of eight litres per 100 kilometres in town and 5.3 on the motorway. The not-so-sophisticated suspension lets the driver know when the car hits a bump … every bump. Apart from that, everything went smoothly with the Maxx, including parking in tight spots.
