Ayhan with his sister Ayla and mum Meryem. (Marco De Luca)
Shine a light on a cure By Esther Lauaki Ayhan’s mother calls him her “little star” and he’s getting ready to Light the Night in Melton for people with blood cancer. The Brookfield five-year-old was diagnosed with leukaemia just days after his third birthday and is facing another year of treatment. Ayhan and his family will take part in their first Light the Night charity walk at Arthur Westlake Memorial Reserve. The event is the Leukaemia Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser and raises money for
the more than 12,000 Australians diagnosed with blood cancer. Mum Meryem Senyuvali said she was thankful that Ayhan’s condition was now stable enough for him to participate in the walk. “I’ve been wanting to get involved in Light the Night for a number of years,” Ms Senyuvali said. She said they wanted to show support for all those families who were affected by blood cancer because she understood their struggle. “No one deserves to go through what we have,” Ms Senyuvali said. “We were lucky in the sense that we didn’t have to quit our jobs,
but Ayhan has still had his childhood taken away from him.” On two occasions Ayhan lost his hair, he’s lost mobility and had to learn how to walk again. He still faces daily chemo tablets, monthly intensive treatments, countless hospital visits, needles and blood transfusions. “He should be able to enjoy the things that kids his age should be doing, such as riding skateboards and playing outdoor soccer,” Ms Senyuvali said. “Ayhan always has a smile on his face, and keeps charging forward no matter what.”
The family’s online fundraising campaign has topped $1000 in the past week and friends, family and colleagues continue to donate. Ms Senyuvali said she has been distributing Light the Night wristbands in the hope of spreading awareness and encourages others to get involved. Melton Light the Night at Arthur Westlake Memorial Reserve will be held on Friday, October 6 starting at 6pm and will include a lantern raising ceremony, children’s activities, live entertainment and food. First step for tradies in waiting By Esther Lauaki A jobs initiative in Melton South aims to give budding tradies and apprentices some guidance into training courses. The Exchange, a program run by the developers of the new Atherstone estate, will help jobseekers into training and skills development courses at Victoria University and Builders Academy Australia. Lendlease Communities’ managing director Matthew Wallace said the program will link residents to employment opportunities and offer information about businesses, social
enterprises, community groups and services in the area. “The Exchange will initially play an important role in connecting the community with construction job opportunities, which may expand to different industry types as the community and local economy grows,” Mr Wallace said. He said this was the second Exchange program the developers have established to promote growth and generate economic prosperity in its communities. The development of the Atherstone estate community to date is estimated to have created more than 240 jobs with the objective of

creating more than 2400 jobs by the end of the project, Mr Wallace said. “Many of these jobs enhance not only the economic development of the community but its social fabric as approximately one in 12 homes in Atherstone will contain a home-based business.” Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey, who will
launch the program in coming weeks, said the benefits to the community would be widespread. “It’s such an important program for our community,” Cr Ramsey said. “When you’ve got 83 per cent of our community having to leave the municipality to go to work, it’s great to have programs like this to offer training for the jobs that are needed here at the moment.” The Exchange program, to be run out of Western BACE, will offer a certificate 3 and 4 and diploma in building and construction from Builders Academy Australia. A Victoria University IT transition course will also be available through the program.

Caroline Springs public transport passengers now have extra bus services to use. Upgraded bus services will link the town centre with Albion and Sunshine stations via the new route 426 bus service and changes to the route 215, 420, 456, 461 and 462 services. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said that from November 26, residents would be offered more frequent connections to Sunbury line trains including 10 extra peak services per week. “We’re boosting bus and train services in Caroline Springs to get locals to work, school or wherever they want to go,” she said. “We’re delivering more trains, more often to get local passengers in and out of the city, and more buses to get you to and from the station.” Route 426 connects the Caroline Springs town centre with Albion and Sunshine stations and improves public transport access for Burnside residents by using the new Westwood Drive Bridge across Kororoit Creek. Monster trucks on a roll There will be monster truck madness in Melton these school holidays. Buster the rides truck will be visiting Woodgrove Shopping Centre as part of four truck displays and special activities between October 2 and 8. Kids will get to ride in a truck of eye-popping proportions and check out the mini monster truck, dominator stunt car and dirt bike as well as a monster truck jumping castle and the monster patrol truck display. Woodgrove centre manager Kylie Robertson said that taking a ride in a monster truck will be a rare opportunity. “To date the public have only been able to watch these giant trucks from arms-length in
action at shows and competitions, now they can actually climb aboard,” Ms Robertson said. “It is our mission to bring rare and exceptional experiences such as this to our community. We love witnessing our visitors going home at the end of the day with new memories that have brought their family closer together and smiles to their children’s faces.” Visitors are advised to come early outside the Bank of Melbourne and Jetts Fitness entrance of Woodgrove Shopping Centre to beat the queues. Viewing will be between 11am and 4pm. Entry is $5 per ride per person. Esther Lauaki

Ballarat line is leading the way By Esther Lauaki Train services on the Ballarat line are among the most reliable in the state with performance levels at their highest since April. Latest V/Line figures show 98.5 per cent of Ballarat line services were delivered in August, up on the previous month. Chief executive James Pinder said it was always pleasing to see an increase but there was still some work to be done to tighten up arrival times.
“It’s really good to see reliability on the Ballarat line has exceeded the 96 per cent target each month for the past year,” Mr Pinder said. “On-time performance has dropped slightly to 86.7 per cent compared with July so that is something we need to take a closer look at. “Of the 975 trains that operated for the month on the Ballarat line, 858 arrived at their destination on time.” Mr Pinder said one of the main reasons for delays to Ballarat line services last month was some trains stopping at stations longer than

scheduled to allow passengers time to board and depart their service. “There’s a lot of work going on to improve dwell times at stations,” he said. “This includes
station announcements from staff to encourage passengers to spread out along the platform and use all available doors when boarding to help ensure a train departs on time.” Work is under way on the $518 million Ballarat Line upgrade, which will deliver more frequent and reliable services to Ballarat passengers by duplicating the track from Deer Park to Melton. An extra 18 trains on the Ballarat line have been introduced since the end of August. Information: www.ptv.vic.gov.au
A quest for stardom The quest to find Melton’s hottest musicians is on again. These talented singers and songwriters were among 18 entrants selected to perform at last Saturday’s heats for the Melton Star Search, which is open to residents seven years and up. Event organiser Jasmine Lynch said there were many new entries in this year’s quest and some who had returned for a second shot at stardom. “The performers have been asked to do two contrasting pieces so that they can showcase their skills,” she said. “They are also judged on their stage performance and costume, as well as their voice, so that the judges can gauge whether they really deserve to make it through to the finals. We had 32 people apply and narrowed it down to a field of 18. “It’s going to be a very tough job as a judge because it’s such a tight competition.” Eight singers have made it through the
heats and are headed to the finals to be held next Thursday (September 28) at Melton Community Hall. Prizes up for grabs include gift certificates, free music and dance lessons, plus the opportunity to record a song and have it played on local radio station 97.9 FM. “Even just getting into the competition, the exposure and performance opportunities that come afterwards are priceless,” Ms Lynch said. “The audience is going to hear people in their community showing off their talents. It should be a lot of fun.” Esther Lauaki

Bacchus Marsh Men’s Shed is to get new digs aimed at helping more men build friendships, skills and community connections. The group, based in a workshop at The Laurels adult education centre, has been given a state government grant of almost $25,000 towards a bigger shed. Bacchus Marsh Men’s Shed president Alec McQuie said the grant was vital to the expansion of the group. “We’ve got a shed at the moment, but it’s small,” Mr McQuie said. “We’ve got about 20 members – and if they all turn up, it’s standing room only. “The grant means we can renovate the stables that are out the back of The Laurels and turn
them into a workshop and that will enable us to have a bigger membership. Our aim is to get more members in and give them somewhere nice to go.” Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said the men’s shed program improved the health and wellbeing of participants. “I’m delighted the government is investing in a new men’s shed for the Bacchus Marsh community,” Ms Pulford said. “Men from Bacchus Marsh and district will be able to get together, work on valuable projects and forge strong ties with others in their community.” Esther Lauaki

Doggie dynamo’s TV win By Esther Lauaki A Kurunjang master dog groomer recently faced a panel of “sharks” and came away best in show. Melanie Newman impressed investors on the television show Shark Tank enough for them to pour $150,000 into her pooch-primping business, Melanie Newman Salon Essentials. The entrepreneurial television series features five Australian business moguls out to find the next great idea to invest in. Ms Newman walked away with an investment of 15 per cent from Boost Juice founder Janine Allis and 35 per cent investment from Dr Glen Richards, founder of Greencross, one of Australia’s largest pet care companys. “I am very passionate about the pet industry,” Ms Newman told the panel. “Pets are part of the family now and they deserve better products. “My hands were constantly irritated from the chemicals in the grooming products, so we created our own professional-grade products.” Ms Newman, who launched her product line in 2015, said the money and mentorship from the investors would help her expand the business. “We are very excited with the outcome and opportunities Shark Tank has presented,” she said. “The whole experience has expanded our knowledge of our own business and how to deal business-to-business. “Our long-term goal is to help build the bond between owners and pets, and help pet owners really understand the importance of home maintenance between professional grooms, as well as expand on our brand internationally.”

Help at hand for substance addiction Anyone struggling with alcohol and drug use will be able to get help closer to home thanks to a new free service in Ballan. The Ballarat Goldfields brief intervention program, run by UnitingCare at Ballan District Health and Care, is available for residents facing emerging or existing substance use problems. The service offers up to five brief intervention counselling sessions to each client. Ballan District Health and Care chief executive Wayne Weaire said the sessions provide psychological and information-based support and referrals could be made to other services for further treatment. “We are very pleased to be able to offer this specialised service to the community as part of our holistic approach to health and wellbeing,” Mr Weaire said. “It can be difficult to find help when you are facing problems with alcohol and other drug use or when someone else’s substance use is having a negative impact on your life. “This new service is an excellent opportunity to start exploring change and it is available here in Ballan.” Community members interested in the program can ask their doctor and other healthcare workers about a referral. Extra bathrooms tap into value By Esther Lauaki Second bathrooms could be adding six-figures to the sale prices of some Melton properties, according to new data. Real Estate Institute of Victoria figures for the year to June 30, show that two-bedroom apartments in Melton had a median price of $400,000 – $160,500 more than homes with one bathroom. Two-bedroom units with a second bathroom also fetched considerably more in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Brimbank.
REIV president Joseph Walton said second bathrooms were very popular with buyers, particularly in premium bayside and inner-city areas. “The number – and quality – of bathrooms is a key consideration for buyers, especially those with families,” Mr Walton said. “Buyers are often willing to pay a premium for the convenience of two bathrooms, rather than purchase with the intent to renovate. “Investors are also realising the value of having a second bathroom when listing

properties for lease, with these homes delivering solid rental returns. “Second bathrooms are popular with a wide range of prospective tenants, whether they be families or those moving into a shared situation. “Given homes with added amenities are
highly desirable, many new properties are now being built to cater to the growing demand for two bathrooms.” For three-bedroom houses, Port Phillip properties with two bathrooms commanded median prices of $1,830,000 – $252,500 more than three-bedroom houses in the municipality with one bathroom. Other Melbourne metropolitan areas where houses with two-bathrooms sold for about $170,000 more than the median prices included Bayside, Mornington Peninsula and Moonee Valley.
Mates fight poverty Two Exford Primary school pupils will spend a night under the stars to raise awareness about the plight of children who live in extreme poverty. Grade 6 mates Lucas and Aiden have decided to leave their customary comfort zone for 24 hours during the upcoming school holidays as part of a school project. Teacher Ross Gundry said the curriculum unit on “How can we improve the lives of children who are suffering?” struck a chord with the two boys. “I’m amazed at the idea that they came up with,” Mr Gundry said. “I’m very proud at the way that the boys have taken the initiative and engaged with their community to raise money for a global cause.” The pair have been raising money through an online crowdfunding page that has gone past $250.
“We are going to sleep outdoors with nothing but clothes on our backs, barley sugar for food and water to drink,” Aiden said. “During this time, we will have to build our own shelter with nothing but natural materials … so we can raise as much money as possible for children in Africa who are living in extreme poverty.” All of the donations will go to Caritas Australia, which specialises in supporting people in poverty. There is no room for family violence in our community, so I was thrilled when my fellow Councillors supported my motion to establish a Family Violence Committee to develop strategies aimed at eradicating family violence, and controlling recidivism, in our City. Do I have to go there? • Majority of people do not read their product disclosure statements (PDS) which states a customers rights including choice of repairer. • Insurance companies often breach their own PDS by forcing customers into going to their designated repairers. • Customers dissatisfied with their insurance companies can lodge an internal dispute or take the matter to the Financial Ombudsman. • If choice is important to you take action… many companies do offer choice of repairer (but remember to always review the PDS)

The Sunshine Short Film Festival is back for its sixth year, and with more entries than ever before. Organiser Steve Pereira said this year’s festival, with the theme of “Brilliant Sunshine”, was shaping up as a huge success. “We’ve seen increases across the board, with more international entries than ever before a bit of a highlight,” Mr Pereira said. “There’s also been a big rise in entries from secondary school students, which is fantastic as we’re a big supporter of local filmmakers.” The film festival, which is run entirely by the Sunshine Business Association, has received 57 entries in total, including some from as far afield as India, Morocco and Germany. The festival will kick off this Friday with a red carpet event at the Sunshine Cinemas.

By Adam Carey and Benjamin Preiss/ The Age Natalie Hutchins has been sworn in as Victoria’s Minister for Women and the Prevention of Family Violence, in a step she believes she has spent much of her career preparing for. One of the Sydenham member’s first acts upon becoming a Victorian MP seven years ago was to commission a report into family violence in Melbourne’s north-western suburbs. In her research she sat for two days in the Sunshine Magistrates Court and observed
scores of domestic violence cases. “It made me realise that it is a jigsaw puzzle of reasons as to why we have such high levels of family violence in various pockets across Victoria,” Ms Hutchins said last week. “That comes down to respect issues in our community … and the unequal circumstances that many women face, who have not had the economic security to be able to flee a situation.” Ms Hutchins nominated the state government’s promised rollout of 17 safety hubs for women and children, at a cost of $448 million, as one of her most urgent tasks.
She replaces Fiona Richardson, who was Australia’s first minister for the prevention of family violence, after Ms Richardson’s death from cancer last month. The two women sat side by side on the government’s front bench. “Fiona and I had many long late-night conversations in the Parliament about these issues,” she said. “One thing I’ve learnt from Fiona is to always stand up for what you believe in.” Marlene Kairouz replaces Ms Hutchins as Minister for Local Government and was also sworn in last week.

Students in power play A student-led dance workshop, a self-defence class, a bake sale and a footy game were part of a Melton school’s efforts to empower women and girls. Catholic Regional College year 9 students rose to the challenge issued by their teacher to raise awareness about family violence. Year 9 leaders Agnes and Alyssa ran some of the activities in the past week. “We didn’t really know anything about the issue,” Agnes said. “When it was brought up in our class and we learned more about family violence, we found out it was a problem and we wanted to do something about it. “Throughout the week, I’ve learned that women can do what they want to do. “We need women and girls to be comfortable and be strong.” Alyssa said she learned how important the issue of family violence was to the community.
Teacher Jules De Cinque said the theme for the week was “violence against women – let’s stop it at the start”. “The initiative has inspired the young women to show strength and purpose through physical activities and sharing their skills with other girls and young women,” Ms De Cinque said. “The students decided to address the issue by organising events for girls and young women at lunchtime for a week, including netball, basketball, dance, self-defence and an AFL game. “All the activities have been run by the young women who organised, publicised, umpired, choreographed, instructed, baked and provided technical support.” Donations from the activities and bake sale were used to raise funds for McAuley Community Services for Women. Dylan Azzopardi is your average nine-year-old boy. The Caroline Springs kid loves his footy and has a cheeky smile that lights up the room. The only difference is that Dylan is living with a rare muscle disorder, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), which will rob him of the ability to walk, talk, swallow, and eventually breathe. The disorder is fatal and there is no cure, but the family is remaining strong in the face of adversity. Parents Damien and Deana say it’s been a bumpy road since they first received the news. “We found out when Dylan was two years and seven months old, and I was 35 weeks pregnant with Jake [their second son] so it was a real shock,” Deana said. “They say mothers instinct is always right, and I knew for a long time there was something wrong. He was very floppy as an infant, wasn’t keeping up with other kids as a two year-old and he was complaining about back pain. “We took him to numerous doctors who couldn’t figure it out, and then finally one good pediatrician figured it out on the spot. That was two days before Christmas 2009.” DMD is caused by an absence of dystrophin, a protein in the muscles that helps to repair and strengthen muscles. It is likely Dylan will lose the ability to walk within the next three years, and he is only expected to live to his mid to late 20s. Despite the grim prognosis, the family has been coping admirably. “It’s basically been about giving him the best possible life we can now, while we can,” Deana said. “How do you tell a nine-year-old that he is going to die, or may not walk again? You can’t do it, so he knows he has weak muscles but that’s all we’ve told him. He wants to be the

MY PLACE Jock Taylor rolls up her sleeves to help out where she can in Bacchus Marsh. The avid gardener and long-time resident tells Esther Lauaki about her love for the community. What is your connection with Bacchus Marsh?
Why did you become involved in organising the Bacchus Marsh Flower and Garden show?
I was born in the United Kingdom and lived there until I was 10, when I moved to New Zealand with my parents. I met and eventually married an Australian … and that’s how we ended up in Bacchus Marsh. My husband needed a job and there was an assistant accountant’s job going at a local hardboards factory (the main employer in the town in those days) and, fortunately, a house was offered to us as well.
I developed an interest in gardening. My parents weren’t gardeners, but once my husband and I bought our house in 1971 I had to develop an interest in gardening because we had quite a big block and it was completely without a garden and overgrown. I had to learn by making a lot of mistakes.
How long have you lived in the area?
The best thing is the convenience. It’s fantastic. You are never far from Melbourne, Ballarat or Geelong. It makes life easy for us. But the downside is that the town is getting very big and the infrastructure is not keeping up. The roads are very congested and we haven’t got the best services – an aquatic centre, art gallery, leisure centre – in spite of all our fundraising efforts. But we will keep pushing.
What’s the best and the worst things about Bacchus Marsh?
I’ve lived here since 1972 … a lot of years. How has Bacchus Marsh changed since you’ve lived here? In those days, it was a very small town. The board at the entrance of the town said there were 7200 people. It was very much smaller than it is now.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I trained as a teacher and taught for many years. I was the librarian at the local high school for five years and then transferred to Bacchus Marsh Primary School and was there for over 16 years. I’m a member of the Bacchus Marsh Rotary Club. I’ve been involved in fundraising for various projects. What are you very passionate about? Through Rotary, we have been raising money
(Marco De Luca)
What hats do you wear in the community?
for the promotion of an aquatic centre so that we can get some support for building one in the town. As a teacher, I had to teach swimming and I really believe that swimming is the best exercise for all ages and an important safety
measure. We need something that’s available all year round for everyone in the community. I’m also very keen to support young children in the town, to give them the best start at school through literacy programs.
David (my husband) and I were arrested in Yugoslavia in 1969. We were driving along a narrow road and there was a young guy in the car behind us, trying to impress his girlfriend, and he couldn’t get past us. Eventually we pulled over and the other driver came over to have a fight with David. I got in on the action, but the police arrived from the little town down the hill and bundled us all away to the station. We managed to explain ourselves and we were all let go later.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir steps back in time for some warming fish and chips We love new-school fish and chips. We like the crisp, shiny places; we like the effort that is made with salads and the like; we love that often there is a variety of fish and other seafood available, matched by different methods of having it cooked. And we absolutely love that such places tend to operate as restaurants proper – and that means tables, chairs, and crockery and cutlery of the non-plastic variety. We have no interest in revisiting the “good old days” of fish and chips. But for some people, that does hold appeal. And a sub-set of such people involves those for whom old-school fish and chips ideally have a particularly British bent. The Little Chippy could’ve been created for them. It’s old-school from the ground up. Mind you, half the menu is dedicated to burgers and the like. But the other half of the food list tells the story. No potato cakes or dimmies here. But there is curry sauce and mushy peas and battered sausages. The place is done out in minimalist takeaway style, with in-house eating restricted to pozzies available at the window bench and its tall stools. I’m definitely up for giving the food a go! And if that’s the case, I may as well go the whole hog. So I order the North Atlantic cod with chips ($16), with a tub of Little Chippy’s coleslaw ($3) on the side. It’s been a long time since I settled in for a fish-and-chip feed wrapped in paper.
THE LITTLE CHIPPY Address: Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre, Point Cook Phone: 7379 7065 I like the chips – there’s plenty of them and they’re defiantly old-fashioned and a long ways from shoestring fries and beer-battered chips. The fish? Well, it’s a mixed bag. As soon as I try to pick it up, it falls apart into several different pieces, with some of them losing their batter in the process. I’m unsure if this is a characteristic of this particular fish species, or if it’s something to do with the fact that as an import, it’s presumably been frozen. Whatever its cause, it’s not something I want to see in my fried fish. However, it is very nice indeed – mild of flavour, well cooked and with just the right amount of al dente meatiness. The surprise of my meal is the coleslaw. What looks like a regulation version of the gloopy and over-dressed takeaway joint salads found the length and breadth of the land turns out to be superb – fresh, crunchy, nicely on the salty side and a bargain at $3.

It has potential to create a dual-occupancy development with separate driveways and individual street frontages thanks to the wide street frontage (STCA), and other options include demolishing and building a dream home or remodelling this solid residence that is neat, well-maintained and ready to live in. The house has three bedrooms, a lounge room and a kitchen and meals area. New carpets and curtains have been installed. Gas heating, evaporative cooling and air-conditioning keep you comfortable year-round. New fencing is another big job already taken care of. Close to primary and secondary schools, and a quick drive to Woodgrove shopping centre, it’s rented at $290 per week until November 10 this year.
Benefitting from its location, this low-maintenance property is set within this smart townhouse development, within easy walking distance of Melton South shopping centre and the station. All three bedrooms have built-in robes, the main bedroom with dual access to the bathroom which is tiled and has a shower and separate bath. There is a powder room downstairs. The open-plan living area and floating floorboards open up the space. The kitchen has granite benchtops and stainless-steel appliances. Outside there is a larger-than-expected rear courtyard. Ducted heating and a single garage are further inclusions to this great entry to the property market.

There are two bathrooms, one of which has been updated. There’s an in-ground pool in the large backyard and an enclosed spa and deck area. A single garage seals the deal. Whether you are looking for a project, or an opportunity to invest, this property’s location cannot be disputed.

Property of the week
KURUNJANG 7 Buckle Road, 3337 Pavilion Property: 5255 4444
Price: $830,000 – $880,000
This is a property that embodies “a gift wrapped up in love”. The vendors, in every aspect, have invested it with pride of ownership, a European sensibility of nature’s provision and an eye for creating spaces with the welcome mat out. The 6044-square-metre block is entirely rimmed with mature cypresses, providing shelter and privacy, while a horseshoe-shaped sealed driveway curves around densely planted beds and a goldfish-stocked pond. Beyond double-door entry, there’s a

beige-carpeted step-down lounge room with fireplace; this abuts a step-up dining room that links, in turn, with the kitchen. Multi-paned windows (one a bay) are dressed in burgundy and lace. Next to a tiled family-meals area, the smart kitchen has white 2pac soft-close cabinetry, mottled-grey laminate benches, soft-green glass splashback, an Electrolux dishwasher and Blanco underbench oven and 900mm gas cooktop. A large, carpeted rumpus room next door could serve as a fourth bedroom; it has a
glass sliding door to the back verandah, making it well positioned to connect with the great paved patio, under a shade sail and beautified with gardens. A carpeted hallway from the foyer leads to the three fitted bedrooms, gleaming main bathroom and good-sized laundry with closet. The main bedroom, with bay window, has a walk-in robe and a fully tiled en suite with 2pac vanity. In the huge backyard, there’s a rabbit-proof vegie garden, big enough to supply the entire neighbourhood. There’s a

shed with attached potting shed, as well as a chook enclosure and a spot to park boat or caravan. Fruit and nut trees, plus berry patches, promise abundant harvest with persimmon, cherry, walnut, pear, apple, fig, apricot, plum, pomegranate, nectarine and citrus trees, and there may be more. The property, five minutes’ drive from town centre, also has ducted heating and cooling and an extended double garage. Carole Levy 21 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 19, 2017

Consider your options before taking the leap into property investment Rob Westwood, principal of First National Westwood in Werribee, says there are plenty of ways to reach property goals this financial year. “Whether you want to buy your first home or take advantage of new government incentives to downsize, there are steps you can take to make that a reality,” Rob says. Retirees holding onto their family homes have been given a $300,000 incentive under a federal budget plan to encourage older property owners to sell.
‘‘
You don’t … need to be a property owner to become - Rob Westwood an investor
(Supplied)
’’
Home owners aged 65 and over selling a home they have lived in for 10 or more years will be able to make a non-concessional contribution of up to $300,000 into their superannuation from the proceeds of the sale. Both members of a couple are allowed to take advantage of this measure for the same home. Rob says that, for existing home owners, buying an investment property can mean they enjoy the benefits of: • Reasonably secure returns • Owning an asset with potential to grow in value • Leveraging existing property equity to facilitate an investment load • A reliable income from rent payments “You don’t necessarily need to be a property owner to become an investor,” Rob continues. “Rentvesting, an emerging trend, may be the answer.” Put simply, rentvesting means you buy an
investment property, rather than buying a house to live in yourself. It eliminates the worry about moving into outer suburbs and having a long commute to work. You can continue to rent in suburbs closer to the city, or any location you like,
while investing in a property in a more affordable area. Rentvesting isn’t a new strategy but has increased in popularity as property prices in Melbourne have rocketed – it can be the ideal way to get started in the property market. Some of the benefits include:
• You don’t have to give up the perks of living close to the city • You can make some great savings at tax time thanks to your investment property • Renting offers more flexibility in personal budgets • Tapping into greater profit potential.

SPORT Old rivals all revved up and ready to go for grand final
Scott Sherlock didn’t look like he had missed a beat in his return from injury. (Shawn Smits)
The Bacchus Marsh and Darley rivalry is one of the biggest in local football and it will step up another level on Ballarat Football League’s grand final day. The two teams and towns, which are less than five kilometres from each other, will fight it out in not one, but two, grand finals on Saturday. The Devils reserves set up the first of those grand final clashes when they defeated East Point on Saturday, 7.11 (53)-6.8 (44) in the preliminary final. Bacchus Marsh then followed in the seniors game, easily accounting for Lake Wendouree, to set up a second match against the Devils in two weeks. Cobras coach Travis Hodgson said it did not get any bigger than this for the club. “It’s as strong a rivalry as most in country and suburban football,” he said. “Both the reserves and seniors are in the grand final, it’s a huge day for the club. “It highlights that the club is in a strong position with a fair bit of depth.” On Saturday, the Cobras produced one of their best performances of the season to defeat Lake Wendouree for the second time in
the finals series. The Cobras got the jump early and were never headed, winning 14.15 (99)-9.9 (63). It was the type of performance Hodgson was after, following their worst day of the year the previous week against the Devils. “We get another chance,” he said. “We started well and the intensity we didn’t play with last week was there. “It was evident early we brought a different level from last week. “We put the scoreboard pressure on early and the Lakers struggled to get back into it.” Hodgson said the performance, which he said was their best of the season, would help boost the players’ confidence. Scott Sherlock, who played his first game since August 5, was best on ground in his return from a hamstring injury. His leadership in the midfield was vital. “Credit to the work he puts in with his rehab and recovery, it was really professional coming back when right,” Hodgson said. “It’s great to have him back on the field.” He said in a big bonus for the side, they finished the game without injuries. Injuries and suspension has played a big
part in the Cobras finals’ campaign. While they didn’t receive any fresh injuries, they will have to play the grand final without Jarrah Maksymow who was suspended for two weeks last week. Hodgson said they were better equipped to deal with the loss of their leading goalkicker, now than earlier in the season. “Jarrah is obviously a talented player, but he makes us more predictable,” he said. “Jarrah missed four or five matches and I think we won all of them convincingly. “We had a good spread of goalkickers.” The Cobras and Devils will both be looking for a second senior premiership from the past few years. Darley broke a 20-year premiership drought when they won the 2015 premiership and the Cobras followed 12 months later, winning their first premiership since Maddingley and Bacchus Marsh merged in 1979. The Devils lead the head-to-head match-ups i 2-1 n the 2017 season, with all three matches being one-sided. Tara Murray
Burras bubbly despite defeats By Tara Murray Diggers Rest’s premiership dreams were dashed by Rupertswood in the Riddell District Netball League on Sunday. Playing in netball grand finals for the first time since 2009, the Burras were confident they could take it to Rupertswood, in both the B-grade and C-grade grand finals. It wasn’t to be, with the Burras falling short against the teams that have been the benchmark of their divisions the past few years. Sarah Carroll, who coached both the B-grade and C-grade Burras sides, said the club was massively proud of the development of both teams and the netball program in general. “We were determined to put on a good show and I think we did that for three quarters,” she said. “In the end, Rupo are a class act and they got away with the goods. “We are super excited. If we can play like this, on such a big occasion after not being in the ‘granny’ for nearly 10 years, it’s really exiting for the club – definitely heading in the right direction in the netball department. “We have the list, the passion and the drive and we will get there.” The C-grade team took to the court first, but was unable to overcome a slow start. After a low-scoring first quarter, the Sharks led 6-2. They stretched the margin out to eight goals at three-quarter time before the Burras pinned it back to four at the end, the final margin being 23-19. Carroll said nerves got the better of the Burras early in the game. “Despite that, we stayed in the game for most of it – but the first quarter cost us,” she said. “We weren’t able to peg it back come the final minutes of the game. “I’m super proud of the girls – they have improved out of sight. No doubt they will be up there next year contesting with the best.” Toni Fogarty, who won the league’s C-grade best and fairest award, was the Burras’ best in the loss. Emma Brooking shot 11 goals. The B-grade grand final was a thriller that wasn’t decided until the dying minutes. The Burras took confidence into the match thanks to a semi-final win over the Sharks, who had won the previous three premierships. Scores were level at the first two breaks and the Sharks led by two goals at the final change. The Sharks found an extra gear to claim the win 32-24 and their fourth straight premiership.

Carroll said the Burras ran out of legs – and that it was something they would look at fixing during the off season. “We’ll have a big pre-season, work on our fitness and come back a fitter outfit,” she said. “Next year we’ll be a little bit fitter, a little bit wiser, a little bit more experienced – and I’m sure we will be there again.” Jorgia Leonard and Erin Surkitt were named the Burras’ best in the loss, while Eliza Wright shot 11 goals. In the other netball grand finals, Romsey took home the A-grade premiership with a start-to-finish performance against Lancefield. The Redbacks got the jump early, eventually winning 56-40, with Cayley Armstrong named best on court. Rupertswood’s third premiership for the day came from its under-19 side, which beat Macedon. The Sharks had to come from behind, eventually winning 27-25. 45 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 19, 2017

Rupertswood’s best not good enough in gallant final
Dylan Featon takes a strong mark. (Shawn Smits)
Rupertswood’s first senior Riddell District Football League grand final ended in heartache, after the team fell short against Macedon. Having built as the finals series progressed, the Sharks entered the match confident they could at least mix it with the Cats, who went into Sunday’s match as favourites. The Sharks pushed them all day and every time the Cats looked like getting away, they reeled them in to keep the contest close. Unfortunately, the Sharks couldn’t find the late goals they needed, losing 11.14 (80)-10.7 (67). Sharks coach Kevin Fitzgerald said sometimes playing good football wasn’t enough at the end of the day. “I was really proud of our boys and I thought they worked exceptionally hard,” he said. “I thought they deserved it and there has to be a winner and loser in every contest, unfortunately we were the loser today. I thought Macedon were good but I thought we were good too. “I can’t fault our boys, they’ve come a long way since I’ve been at Rupo. Hopefully we’ve
earnt a little bit of respect and can build on that the next few years.” The Sharks started the day with a big win, as ruckman Dean Putt was declared fit to play after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in the qualifying final. Once on the field, the Sharks started slowly before their best period of the game in the second quarter when they kicked five goals in a row. Fitzgerald said the half-time siren came at the wrong time for them. “You have periods when you’re on top, periods when you’re not,” he said. “Half-time came at a bad time for us as I thought we had them under control and started to score. “It would have been nice to go another five minutes.” The Cats took control of the game in the second half and despite some hard contested football from the Sharks they couldn’t find the goals they required. In the end the Cats had too many players that could stand up when needed. Fitzgerald said despite the loss they would
take a lot out of this season and would be better for it the next couple of years. “You’re looking at a list of local boys. If you took Chambo [Brett Chambers] out of it, the average age would be 21. “We had 10 debutantes and 42 players throughout the year. “I’m proud of our boys.” The game was Fitzgerald’s last as coach of the side after two years in charge. Assistant coach Nick Ash has been appointed coach. “They came to me 10 weeks ago, asking what are your intentions for next year,” Fitzgerald said. “I said if we win the flag I’m walking away, if we don’t win the flag I would like the opportunity to coach next year. “They decided not to take that option. I’ve sat on it for 10 weeks and I’m filthy on the decision. “I’ve had the toughest 10 weeks of my coaching career.” It was a tough day all round for the Sharks as their under-18.5s lost to Wallan. Tara Murray
Cats relish a tough flag victory By Tara Murray Macedon Football Club is the toast of the Riddell District Football League after winning its first premiership in more than 40 years. It’s been a tough journey for the Cats since their last premiership in 1976, including going into recess for three seasons in the 2000s. The Cats and the local community that fought to get their football club back up and kicking goals got to see the rewards on Sunday afternoon. The Cats had been the best side all season, but that mattered little when they faced Rupertswood, which was looking for its first senior premiership since crossing to the RDFL. It was a hard-fought contest, with neither side able to break away. But the Cats hit the lead in the third quarter and stayed there, holding off the Sharks for an 11.14 (80)-10.7 (67) win. For Cats coach Jeff Andrews, there was a sense of relief when that final siren went. “It’s what you want in a grand final,” he said. “You can win them easy, but to be challenged couldn’t be more pleasing. It’s not all about ability, but a fair bit of character. “People are crying and people are hugging me … quite a few people here today are from the stint [as coach] I had nearly 20 years ago. “All those boys came today. They hadn’t been able to do it and had seen the club go into recess, but were be able to taste success today.” This year’s grand final was one in which both teams had periods of dominance. Andrews thought his players didn’t make the most of their share of the lead early. “I think it’s been the story of our year, that we haven’t capitalised,” he said. “Not making the most of our opportunities or kicking points – we thought we should have been further ahead. “The boys remarked at half-time that we got happy with ourselves when we got out to about four goals … to their [Rupertswood’s] credit, they turned it on for 15 to 20 minutes of the second quarter.” After kicking just one of the first five goals, the Sharks hit back late in the second quarter kicking five goals in a row to lead by 10 points at half-time. The Cats made the most of a slight breeze in the third quarter, scoring the first five goals of the second half. That meant the Sharks were left to do the chasing. They reduced the margin to 20 points at the last break. The Cats kicked the first goal of the last quarter, which was a relief for Andrews and the Cats. “The second half was a bit different,” Andrews said. “We were able to get our game 46 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 19, 2017

going and get it into our forwards and lock it in there. “Casey [Summerfield] and Erroll [McConnell] were good in the midfield with enormous pressure on, and we had some pretty good targets today. “Chris Kilmartin did an enormous job … we got the game on our terms, but we had to earn it.” Errol McConnell was awarded the Doug McIntyre Medal for best-on-ground as voted by the umpires. He was one of four players the Cats signed in the pre-season. Those four proved to be the finishing touches to a side already poised for success. Andrews had high praise for McConnell. “I reckon we had the toughest player in the competition in Casey Summerfield – and then Errol comes along,” he said. “In the very first quarter of the first game of the year, against Wallan, one of their star recruits went to do a fend off and he brought him down like a lion bringing down a gazelle. “Pound for pound, he’s the toughest player I’ve seen in the comp.” Summerfield took home the AFL Victoria Country Medal. Aaron Christensen and Daniel Markworth were other standouts for the Cats. Andrews, who has coached the club for five years in his second stint as coach, said he was weighing up his coaching future. “I love the club,” he said. “I’ve had two coaching stints here and I love it. Whatever is best for the club, I’ll do.”

Young gun aims for AFL selection
Cameron Rayner in action for the NAB AFL Academy earlier this year. (Michael Willson/AFL Media)
School work and specialised training is keeping highly touted Western Jets young gun Cameron Rayner firmly grounded ahead of November’s AFL national draft. The explosive half-forward/midfielder has ticked all the boxes in a stellar junior career, with some of the draft forecasters predicting he will be selected with the first pick, or not long after. Rayner is aware of the hype, but he knows it is all just background noise until draft night rolls around. “The real people that are going to make the decisions are the recruiters and they keep their cards pretty close to their chest,” Rayner said. “I’ve said from day one, I don’t care if I’m pick one or pick 100, I just want to make sure I’m on an AFL list. “It’s good to see [the positive stories], but you just put your head back down and start working.” Rayner has been successful from the moment he set foot on a football ground in the
under-10s. He kick-started his junior career with the Hillside Sharks – the club he identifies as home because of his family connection – winning “four or five” premierships at division 2 level, before crossing to Essendon Doutta Stars to play division 1, where he incredibly won two flags in a week. “One was in the under-16s one week and then in the under-18s the week after,” Rayner said. “To win two in a couple of weeks was awesome.” The 17-year-old got his first major break as a half-back flanker in the Victorian schoolboys team and has made every post a winner since. He has starred for the Jets in the TAC Cup, dominated in the Big V for Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships and represented the NAB AFL Academy with aplomb on interstate and overseas tours. Honoured by the Vic Metro call-up, Rayner did not let the chance go to waste, being one of the side’s most influential players in a title-winning team, earning rave reviews and All Australian honours.
“The feeling of pulling on the Big V jumper before the game is unbelievable, you can’t really describe it,” Rayner said. Rayner split his time with the Western Jets and Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School this season. The Sydenham resident regrets not playing more games for the Jets because the side finally realised its potential late in the season. Rayner is the September nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises youth athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Rayner will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. He will also receive other prizes to assist him in achieving his sporting goals in what promises to be a great career.

Two titles for debutantes By Tara Murray Caroline Springs capped off a remarkable debut season, with not one but two premierships on Saturday in Hockey Victoria’s winter competition. The club’s women’s F-grade pennant and metro B north-west teams claimed premierships on Saturday, straight after each other at Footscray. Women’s coach Ron Shadbolt said it was quite amazing the instant success they had achieved. “They’ve all taken on the challenge,” he said. “They love their hockey and most have been coaching the juniors as well. It’s a very proactive group of ladies. “Our president and our captain Laura Brown said in her speech, it had been a hard year with all the work we’ve done behind the scenes, but a rewarding year.” The club’s top women’s side F-grade pennant, had a fight on its hands in its grand final against
Gippsland Bulls. Caroline Springs entered the match hoping to go through the season undefeated. Shadbolt said early on, they looked anything but the team which had been dominant all season. “We started in the worst manner possible and after 10 minutes we were 2-0 down,” he said. “The Bulls went through us with ease and scored easily. “The defence was in chaos. We were missing a player who couldn’t play and they exploited that.” Caroline Springs got one goal before half-time, to enter the break 2-1. Shadbolt said they had a real honest conversation at half-time. The talk worked, with Caroline Springs responding, to win 5-2. “It took 15 minutes to get the game under control and play the way we wanted. To win 5-2 was spectacular.” Brittany Webster scored twice for Caroline Springs, with Narelle Shadbolt, Aimee Jungfer
and Laura Brown all scoring one goal. Narelle Shadbolt and Melissa Lake were Caroline Springs’ best, standing strong especially when the side struggled early on. Aimee Jungfer showed glimpses of her talent, with a spectacular 15-minute period. The B north-west side also had to battle to get the win, in a low scoring match. Caroline Springs got the lead early on and managed to hold on 1-0. “It was an exceptionally tight game,” Shadbolt said. “We scored 10 minutes into the first half from a really good team set-up. “We then lost one of our better players with a knee injury. It brought us back to the pack.” Jessica Spence scored Caroline Springs’ goal. Shadbolt said Mel Cashen was clearly best on the field, while Randeep Reetu and Kathy Jungfer both had good games. Shadbolt said both sides would be regraded and promoted next season, with the possibility of going up several grades.
It was an excited Melton Centrals junior girls football team last Sunday. In its first season, the team came away with the inaugural AFL Goldfields Riddell junior girls’ premiership. Centrals, who finished second, caused an upset when they knocked off minor premier Bacchus Marsh. The Cobras had won the semi-final between the two teams, 35-5. Centrals’ girls football manager Janelle Lampi said the grand final was one of the best games the girls had played all season. It was a low scoring affair, with Centrals winning 2.3 (15)-1.5 (11). “The girls came together and played together as a team,” she said. “One of our girls touched a shot for goal [in the third quarter] on the line which would have been a goal for them. That could have gone either way.” Lampi said the girls were pleased by the win, but some didn’t realise they had won the premiership. Once they did there was plenty of celebrations. “It was really surreal,” she said. “They were stunned. They were asking who we played the next week. We had to explain that was the last game for the season.” Ella Tyson was named best on ground by the umpires. Lampi said the club had been thrilled with performances of not only the junior girls’ side, but also the youth girls’ side. The youth girls’ side was knocked out in the preliminary final by Sunbury Kangaroos. “We had a really good bunch of girls that worked hard together,” she said. “Our youth girls put up a fight. They’ve been getting further each year.” The club already has plans for a third side next season. They would like to field an under-15 girls team.
