Melton’s crime in a dive Police operations targeting offenders after dark are showing results as Melton’s crime rate falls. Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency last week revealed an 8.8 per cent fall in offences recorded in the year to June – to 11,153, down from 12,223. A main driver behind the drop was a 24.5 per cent decrease in public order and security offences, including decreases in weapons and explosives offences from 488 to 343, public nuisance from 60 to 48 and disorderly and offensive conduct from 162 to 146. Melton tasking co-ordination Inspector Warren Green said the figures showed that recent police operations in the area were bearing fruit. “We’re quite pleased to say the least,” Inspector Green said. “I knew that crime in Melton was down, but it’s pleasing to see that the Crime Statistics Agency figures have come out and we can put to rest some of the myths about what is happening on the ground.” Inspector Green said that “significant gains” had been made in property crime. “There has been a significant downturn in thefts (7.4 per cent), burglaries (8.4 per cent) and property damages (9.4 per cent),” he said. “Across that whole area of property crime, we’ve made a huge impact – primarily around our operations that we’ve been running. “We’ve had night-time saturations in this police service area targeting offenders that are out after dark. “We’ve also had use of the air wing with support from state resources to

tackle the offending and, by flooding the streets with marked and unmarked cars, we’ve had a marked effect on our crime rates.” Contrary to the overall fall in crime, robbery spiked to 82 offences, the highest in five years, and abduction and related offences were up to 22 from 15 a year ago. Sexual offences detected in Melton climbed 15.7 per cent.

There has been a significant downturn in thefts - Warren Green

’’

A wave of home invasions in Melton earlier this year were reflected in the latest robbery figures, which revealed a 57.1 per cent rise in aggravated robbery, Inspector Green said. “We’ve seen a change in offending patterns with some of our offenders,” he said. “They’re becoming more opportunistic … we have operations running at the moment to target those. “We’d encourage people to be out with others when they’re going out at vulnerable times. “If something is not quite right, call the police so we can get someone down there.” Meanwhile, Moorabool crime has risen by 8.2 per cent, driven by justice procedures (up 66.1 per cent), dangerous and negligent acts endangering people (up 42.6 per cent) and stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour (up 29.2 per cent).

Lucky dog finds her way home By Esther Lauaki The emotional reunion between a dog owner and his pup Summer has served as a reminder to microchip pets. Summer, the eight-year-old bull Arab, went missing from her home last month. Moorabool council community safety officer Shannon Walsh said he received a call on September 21 to collect an “emaciated dog which had been found staggering out of the bush” near Blackwood. Moorabool Pet-Adoption said Summer’s

rescuers, nearby residents who were out for a walk, took the pup home and provided a warm bed until help arrived. “Upon arrival, Shannon found this sweet girl to be emaciated … and a depressed demeanour. She was also found to have a microchip,” it said. “She was immediately transported to the Bacchus Marsh Veterinary Centre and examined.” Her owner, who asked not to be named, said he was “emotional and heartbroken” to see his companion in such a state. “We came home from work a few of weeks

ago and she was gone,” her owner said. “It was tough, we drove hundreds of kilometers looking for her … but we live in the forest. “It was devastating to see the state he was in when Shannon bought her back.” He said Summer had lost nearly 20 kilograms. “She was without food or water for at least two weeks and she’s very lucky to still be alive. “She wouldn’t hurt a fly, she’s one of the best pets I’ve ever had in my life.” Summer is on the road to recovery and is gradually getting her appetite back.

A really top knight In a castle not so far away, there lives a world jousting champion. Phillip Leitch, who lives at Kryal Castle in Leigh Creek and works as a full-time knight, is a two-time winner of the St Ives Medieval Faire and snapped up his third world title at the weekend. Riding black friesian stallion Valiant, Leitch knocked fellow Kryal Castle teammate, Cliff Marisma, off the top spot to claim the win at the St Ives showground in Sydney on September 24. Australia’s best jousters, went head-to-head with their international counterparts to replicate the combat conditions that featured in 15th century Europe. The knights wore historically accurate armour weighing about 40 kilograms. “I’m still in a bit of disbelief at the win,” he said. “I was beaten last year by a worthy opponent who was competing again this year

and I was able to win against him. The field of jousters that gathered was of such high quality and it was no easy feat.” He has earned international jousting success in Europe and the US, where he appeared as an assistant coach on the Full Metal Jousting television series. “To really get and understand it, you have to actually try the sport,” he said. “It’s taken me 10 years to get where I am. It’s a journey of your horsemanship, equipment and a lot of training. It takes a fair bit of commitment.” As a treat during the school holidays, Lady Caroline from Sweden, a world-class jouster, will be jousting at Kryal Castle. Kryal Castle opens daily during the school holidays from 10am-4pm and every weekend. Details: www.kryalcastle.com.au Esther Lauaki

Snake victim airlifted to hospital By Esther Lauaki A warning to hikers to keep an eye out for snakes comes after a woman was flown to hospital with a bite to her lower leg last week. The woman, believed to be in her 50s, was bitten at about 2pm while on an 86-kilometre trek through Lerderderg State Park. Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said a paramedic was lowered from a helicopter to treat the woman near Blackwood, as the area was inaccessible by road.

“The woman received a snake bite to her lower leg and was transported via air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition,” he said. CFA and SES crews were also involved. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning issued a notice last month that recent warmer weather has brought some snakes out of their winter hibernation. Nick Clemann, of the Arthur Rylah Institute, encouraged people to stay vigilant. “Be aware that snakes may be around, and

be informed on how to react to them,” Mr Clemann said. “People often assume that snakes won’t be around at this time of year, but depending on where people live they could encounter a snake while walking the dog, cycling, bush-walking, gardening or visiting parks. “Snakes are more common around the urban fringe or in rural parts of Victoria, but they can also be found close to cities and towns, particularly around watercourses and parkland.”

He warned anyone who encounters a snake to keep calm and move away and call DELWP for assistance. “Tiger snakes and lowland copperheads are the most frequently encountered snakes near the coast, while eastern brown snakes are more common in drier areas,” Mr Clemann said. “It is rare for these snakes to bite people, however they are all dangerously venomous.” Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to capture, kill or harm them.

Night of stay-in power Melton women are being encouraged to round up the girls and host a Girls Night In this month. The Girls’ Night In campaign runs throughout October and November is one of the Cancer Council’s major fundraisers to help support women diagnosed with a breast or gynaecological cancer. Melton resident Bronwyn Mills and her friends will join more than 2000 women who will be hosting sleep-overs, dinner and movie nights, pamper parties and a heap of other creative gatherings. “We think that cancer is something that strikes a chord with so many people and we wanted to be involved by hosting a Girls Night In,” Ms Mills said. In Melton each year, 195 local women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 76 women are diagnosed with a form of gynaecological cancer. Bernadette Kennedy, of Cancer Council

Victoria, said this fundraiser was a simple and fun way to get the girls together to socialise while raising funds for a good cause. “Since 2005, Girls’ Night In hosts have helped raise over $12 million in Victoria,” Ms Kennedy said. “It can also be ideal opportunity to highlight the need for regular screening for breast and gynaecological cancers among your group of friends. “You can make your event as big or as small as you like – a casual dinner party, a dress-up movie night, a pampering session. “The possibilities are endless and any event you host will help support women affected by breast or gynaecological cancer.” Information: www.girlsnightin.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85. The collection of images will be on display at Melton Library and Learning Hub during National Bird Week.

Laughing kookaburras and whistling kites will be among Melton’s feathered wildlife to feature in an upcoming photography exhibition. Photographer Nora Peters’ latest exhibition coincides with National Bird Week, from October 23, and will focus on wild birds around Melton, as well as other native wildlife. Peters took up photography at just three years of age after she was given a black-and-white Ilford camera and a few rolls of film by her father. The photgrapher recalls her early analogue photography. “It didn’t allow a second chance at getting a shot,” Peters said. “I had to wait for the processing and printing to see the images, whereas with digital I can

Firefighters from Melton and Caroline Springs are now able to provide life-saving medical assistance. The brigades are among 22 Country Fire Authority outfits to complete training for the emergency medical response program. The co-responder program between CFA and Ambulance Victoria is designed to help protect more Victorian lives. CFA district 14 acting operations manager David Harris said that under the program,

firefighters and paramedics would be dispatched at the same time. “Firefighters take on many and varied roles,” he said. “If a firefighter arrives at your door in the event of a life-threatening medical emergency, do not turn them away. Every second counts in emergencies. “Firefighters will respond with the nearest ambulance to help unconscious patients and patients who are not breathing by providing access to life-saving emergency care. “And the message to residents is: Don’t be surprised if you see a fire truck and an

A 46-year-old Caroline Springs man has had to pay almost $1000 after performing a reckless driving act in front of police. Transit West officers patrolling Ballarat Road in Deer Park witnessed a red and black Ford Mustang fish-tail in front of them just before 3.30pm on September 20. Melton Secondary College girls have outplayed the competition to snatch up their fourth state secondary squash championship title in a row. The intermediate year 10 girls’ team of Abby, Ebony and Alannah won five matches to take the title with only one point scored against them throughout the recent tournament. College sports co-ordinator and coach Gerard Darcy said the winning streak had been years in the making. “Starting about four years ago, we knew that we had a state champion junior player in grade 6 that was about to move up,” he said. “With that in mind, we trained up a couple of girls in year 7, who were tennis players, to

play squash so that there would be a team ready to go for when that third player arrived. They haven’t stopped winning since.” He said that the team, sponsored by Squash Logic in Melton, took mentorship from former international squash player Karen Cagliarni, who is a teacher at the school. “It’s a sport that’s dying a little bit and we are trying to promote it,” Mr Darcy said. “We’re aiming for six straight championships titles with this group of girls.” The Melton Secondary College senior girls as well as the intermediate and junior boys’ teams also made the state finals. I was very pleased that local resident and Eynesbury Environment Group co-founder Chris Lunardi won a Keep Victoria Beautiful award last month.

I am a firm believer in education and know, first hand, that it provides an essential bridge to employment.

Chris was nominated by Council staff and awarded the prestigious Dame Phyllis Frost award for his outstanding environmental leadership. This came on top of two other awards won by Council: the Cultural Heritage - Council projects award for our efforts to preserve dry stone walls in this City, and the Protection of the Environment - Council Projects award for helping to save endangered species. Winning these awards acknowledges the strong commitment of our community and Council to protecting the environment as we continue to grow. Work being done includes two more internal basketball, netball and futsal courts, 12 tennis courts, four new change rooms, a large community room and many other special purpose spaces. Work on this project is due to be completed by the end of 2018. As we continue to provide for our growing population, we recently commemorated the many locals whose lives were lost during World War One with the unveiling of a new monument at Melton Country Club. and it is days like these events that can raise awareness and show true support to those suffering through a life of cancer, that they are not alone. When diagnosed with cancer, your day, your world and your life, will never be the same, so on October 29 I will stand with those battling cancer and thousands of others who are taking “one day to conquer cancer”.

MY PLACE Melton resident Jackie is getting ready to walk 25 kilometres for her loved ones. She talks to Esther Lauaki.

How has your preparation been so far? In preparation for the event I have been walking regularly with my family and friends who assist in cheering me on and giving me the strength and support with the cause I stand for. What would people be surprised to know about you? People would be surprised to know that I was an elite gymnast for the Melton Gymnastic Academy for a number of years. I was state champion in 2001 all around first place at the age of 12, among many other gymnastics achievements during my history as a gymnast.

(Shawn Smits)

What is the best thing about living in Melton?

What is your connection to Melton? I live here and have for most of my 28 years. Tell me about why you decided to do the One Day to Conquer Cancer event. I believe that it is a part of a great cause benefiting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. I have had several friends and family

members suffer through cancer, some of which their lives were taken due to it, others lucky to have lived through it. However, watching them suffer on a daily basis, while still trying to maintain a smile for the benefit of their loved ones, is a horrible thing to witness. If I can take a day out of my busy life to show support and keep that smile strong on those suffering with cancer or those we have lost, I will stand with them and remember them and contribute the

best way I know how. What will you be doing for the event? I will be walking for 25 kilometres through the streets of Melbourne to raise crucial funds in the aid of treatment and research for cancer sufferers and I really believe that walking saves lives. Walking itself is not a strenuous activity, it is not hard on your body, anyone can do it

The people. We are a multicultural community where everyone is welcome and no two people are the same. The learning and understanding that goes along with that is what I truly love. I love meeting new people from all walks of life and learning about them and their ways of life, which, a lot of the time differ from my own and present new and exciting opportunities. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? The thing that I would change in Melton is the public transport system. It is slow, irregular and out-dated. Donate to Jackie’s fundraising campaign: bit. ly/2xvjxi1

NEW COMMUNITY COMING SOON A GREAT PLACE TO PUT DOWN ROOTS Set to be a thriving destination with a charming community vibe, the 63-hectare Westwood development on Beattys Road, Fraser Rise (formerly Plumpton), will be home to 888 families when complete. Westwood is planted in rich, red soil deposits, a lasting reminder of an ancient volcano, the contents of which nourished early settlers’ crops, yielded precious metals to prospectors and fed graziers’ herds. Much of this land’s prosperity can be traced back to the soil, in which the Westwood pear still flourishes. Today that land offers fresh opportunities for families as they take up residence in Westwood, a place of thriving nature and great foundations for growth, prosperity and belonging. Residents, who will have a diverse choice of block sizes, will enjoy proximity to the established centres at Caroline Springs and Watergardens, connecting them with more than 200 specialty stores, supermarkets and dining experiences – and much more. Existing rail links and access to the Calder and Western freeways will make it easy for residents to commute to work and local attractions at their leisure. On Westwood’s doorstep, a proposed P-12 school, a community centre and local parks will provide plenty of meeting places for neighbours to connect. Just minutes away, a proposed aquatic centre will help keep residents cool during summer. More information on this exciting new community will be unveiled exclusively to the VIP Westwood database over coming weeks. Register your interest now to be kept up to date as the first sales release approaches.

Registrations of interest are open for the first sales release at Westwood. Visit www.westwoodland.com.au for more information.

MELTON SOUTH 3/33 Staughton Street, 3338 Raine & Horne: 9743 6866

Price: Contact agent

This is a cracking unit for city commuting young couples, downsizers, first-home buyers and investors alike. The reasons are many, not least its location – directly opposite bus stop and station and with Coles-anchored Station Square Shopping Centre just down the road. Several schools are about 10 minutes away by foot. At the back of a block of just three units, No.3 is a well-maintained place, with the feel of a small house – something that

Auction: October 14 at 12.30pm

is equally true for outdoor spaces. This considerably amps up the appeal factor. Inside, the pearl-grey wall paint is matched with grey vertical blinds on all windows, while the living-dining room and both bedrooms have laminate floorboards. Everything is fresh and streamlined, pointing to low upkeep. A tiled entry foyer has an archway to usher in the living space, which has a ceiling fan and split-system. The kitchen has ample cupboards in a cream shade,

timber-trimmed brekkie and other benches in cream laminate, and a stainless-steel gas cooker under a canopy rangehood. The bedrooms, with built-in robes, share a hallway with a good-sized, gleaming bathroom with white-laminate vanity unit and a heat lamp. The nearby toilet and laundry are separate. The dining area opens via a glass slider to a pergola that perches above sealed aggregate and has cafe blinds all around – a significant bonus for a unit.

1

2

The sealed aggregate, forming a pathway past pretty garden beds planted with varying succulents and yuccas, culminates as a large, garden-rimmed patio and utility area. The property also has a carport, behind which is roller door entry to a garage – the latter has an alarm, as does the home. There’s more: external sunblinds all around and 12 solar panels equalling savings on bills. Carole Levy 17 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 3, 2017

Building your own home, what to do before the first sod is turned Building a home will likely be the single biggest investment you ever make. To protect yourself from rogue building or plumbing practitioners, here are a few important steps the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) recommends you take before and during construction.

Top seven warning signs of an unregistered builder: • Your builder is not a member of an industry body. • They do not ask you to enter into a contract before the project starts. • They ask for too much money up front or at each set payment stage. By law in

(iStock)

Before your project starts: • Confirm your building practitioners are registered and that plumbing work is carried out by, or under the supervision of, a licensed plumber. Ask to see their VBA ID card – which all practitioners should carry. • Ask to see physical examples of their work and to speak with previous clients. • It is essential to select a building surveyor who is independent of your builder. • Appoint either your council’s building surveyor or a private building surveyor of your choice. If you ask for quotes from multiple private building surveyors, ensure they know this so they don’t wrongly assume you have engaged them. • Read the information on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website before signing a contract to ensure it meets legal requirements. • Ensure your builder gives you a domestic building insurance policy or a certificate of currency covering your property before construction starts. The builder’s name on the contract should match the name on the insurance policy.

Victoria, a deposit can be no more than 5 per cent of the total project cost (projects over $20,000). • They aren’t prepared to show you what homes they have recently built or to provide

you with the opportunity to talk to some of their previous clients. • They cannot or will not show you their VBA ID card. • You cannot find the builder’s or plumber’s

name in the VBA’s Find a Practitioner tool. • You are not given a copy of your builder’s domestic building insurance policy or a certificate of currency covering your property before construction.

SPORT Burras primed and ready for finals tilt After a solid preseason, Diggers Rest Bulla is primed for a strong Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup season. Under new coach Rasika Batepola, the Burras have managed to keep most of their side together, while adding a bit more depth. In his first season at the club after moving to the Diggers Rest township, Batepola had been encouraged by what he had seen so far. “It’s been a really good preseason and we had our first practice match and we won easy without our whole team due to injuries and unavailabilities,” he said. “Everything is shaping up nicely.” Batepola comes to the Burras after six seasons as player and coach with PEGS in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association and adds to both the Burras’ batting and bowling. He’s joined at the club by Sumanjan Fernando, who also played first class cricket in Sri Lanka before moving out to Australia. The

batsman and leg spinner most recently played with Glenroy in the VTCA. Batepola said one area they had to look to address was the lack of variation in their bowling attack. He said with the arrival of Fernando and 16-year-old Nathan Crosland who has crossed from Ashfield, he would help fill that void. Overall, the new coach thinks the side will be stronger than last year. He said making finals were on the radar after missing out last season. “We didn’t have any quality spinners and now we have two,” he said. “We’ve also got Darren [Quarrell], Rhys [Berry], Lindon [Dowsett] and myself as well.” It hasn’t been all positives, with the side losing last year’s leading run scorer Steven Fogarty, who has retuned to his old club Sunbury United which has been promoted to the top grade. Batepola said having kept most of the side together, the players know each other’s game,

making things easier. Rhys Berry will again captain the side. “It’s my first year at the club and I don’t know a lot of people,” he said. “Rhys is a really good captain. The group knows what do to with the batting and bowling partnerships.” The Burras kick off their season on Saturday in a one-day match against reigning premiers Gisborne. In other McIntyre Cup matches, Bacchus Marsh plays Woodend, Romsey hosts Riddell, Sunbury plays Sunbury United in a local derby and Rupertswood plays Lancefield. In the B-grade competition, Bacchus Marsh host newcomers Eynesbury and St Anthonys plays last season’s C-grade premiers Gisborne. Tara Murray Rhys Berry will again skipper Diggers Rest Bulla. Lions’ pride on the line By Tara Murray Melton is ready for the pre-season to be over and the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association season to be under way. The Lions will have a similar line-up as they look to improve on last season, which was a tale of two halves. Lions’ coach Nathan Geisler said after a long pre-season they were ready to start playing. “It has been a good pre-season,” he said. “It’s a similar group to last season. The numbers have been good with 20 to 30 players at each session. “There’s been an increase of numbers across the board in the twos, threes and fours. We’ll be a lot stronger than last season.” Extra depth was something the Lions were keen to address with their lower grades struggling last season. The seconds and fourths finished 13th, while the third XI finished bottom without a win. 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 3, 2017

Geisler said they had added some much needed experience to those sides, while a couple of 15-year-olds would start the season in the seconds in a good sign for the future. The first XI team will be similar to last season’s side. Aaron Clarke, who made his first XI debut last season, is set to get first crack at the spot left vacant by the departure of the experienced Michael Alexander, who is this season coaching Darley. “Michael’s departure opens a spot at the top of the order,” Geisler said. “Aaron and some other players will have to step up. “Aaron will get first crack and we hope he takes that next step.” Nathan Dantonio, who played both first and second XI cricket last season, has moved to St Anthonys. One inclusion is Nathan Taylor, who was playing cricket in Sydney and has moved to the area. Geisler said they hadn’t picked up any big names in the off season, with the focus on promoting from within.

He said this season they were hoping for a more consistent performance across the board, with most of the group having been together last year. The Lions won five matches before Christmas and were in the top two at the break, before winning just one match after the break and finishing eighth. “We were good before Christmas, but we couldn’t get the wins after that,” Geisler said. “We weren’t blown out of the water, we just missed that killer strike. We’ve worked hard with the bat and ball and hopefully we will be more consistent. We know people’s roles and are more familiar with them.” This season the Lions are playing in the north-west division. They start their season on Saturday, with a two-day clash against Kew. The Lions women’s side will have to wait a week to get their season under way in Victorian Premier seconds, with a bye in the opening round.

Anthea Stathakis may not be able to take to the football field due to injury, but it isn’t going to stop her being involved with the Caroline Springs Women’s football side. Stathakis, who played in the Lakers first season, has been named the side’s coach for next season, taking over from Terry Azzopardi. Stathakis said she had a passion for football and wanted to stay involved in anyway she could. “I’m a parent at the club and my son has been playing the past three seasons,” she said. “I decided to join the women’s side and see how it goes and I started to enjoy myself. “I need to have a knee reconstruction and Terry asked me what my plans were for my football. I said I want to eventually coach the side and it went from there.” Azzopardi will still be involved with the side, becoming a mentor for Stathakis. Stathakis, who played top level basketball, said she wished football had been around when she was growing up. “I’ve always loved football and if women’s football was around when I was younger I would have headed down that path.” Stathakis said after a first season which saw the side finish fourth and play finals, she’s hoping they can build on that next year. This year the Lakers played in a combined Western Region and Essendon District football league competition, but all indications are the leagues will have separate competitions next year. “Looking at the bigger picture, I can see great things happening with this team. We want to win premierships.” The new coach said they were looking for new players to join the side next season. Preseason training will start later this month. Meanwhile it was a big night for the Lakers’ women’s side at the Western Region Football League best and fairest night. Krystyn Raymundo took out the league best and fairest in the inaugural Senior Women’s competition, while teammate Abby Gilmore finished equal second one vote behind. Tara Murray

New green and new hope has Melton ready to fire There is a buzz at Melton Bowls Club ahead the Bowls Victoria Pennant season opener on Saturday. After an average season last year, the club has been boosted by the installation of a new green. While it’s expected to help with a better standard of bowls, it’s also attracted new members to the club. Secretary John Adams said the laying of a brand new green had everyone excited. “The green is carpet and a lot better than what we were playing on,” he said. “We’re getting the other green done and with the new greens, we’ve picked up some better players.

“A lot didn’t like playing on our synthetic green as it was uneven. It was holding us back a bit. “Now we need to learn how to play on the new green.” The second green is expected to be completed by Christmas. Adams said the new green had attracted some new players to the club, many of them younger players. Samantha Shannahan, who has represented Australia, is the biggest name to join the club. “We’re a fairly old side and while we need to have some experience, but we need to get some youth into the team,” Adams said. From last season’s top side, Adams said

they had lost a couple of players. One of their skippers, Ray Morrissey has moved to Deer Park which has been promoted to the premier division. Adams said overall they had lost 10-12 players across the five teams, but believed they had enough players to fill those spots. Melton missed finals in section 1, division 1 last season, after a poor second half to the season when they slipped out of the top four. Adams said they were keen to atone for that this year. Melton starts its season on Saturday, hosting Fitzroy Victoria. “Last year we had our chances until the end, but if we had made it I don’t think we could have gone any further,” Adams said.

“This year we could give it a real run. “We’ll be looking for top four with the top two sides and surviving relegation with the other three teams. “We’ll be disappointed if we don’t make finals in the top division. Hopefully we came out full guns blazing.” Melton’s other teams are playing in division 2, division 4, division 6 and division 7. All four sides are playing in section one. Meanwhile the Central Highlands Bowls Division still has a couple of weeks before play gets underway. Round one of that competition is one October 21. Tara Murray

there. “It helps get my name out in Australia and people get to know who I am,” he said. “Most selections are based on results, but who you know might get you a few more opportunities.” The gold medal adds to the one he won at the World DTL Championships in Ireland last year. Competing for Australia, he won a team

Sports shorts Swimming

It’s been a busy month for Melton Swimming Club. Swimmers represented the club at a number of Victorian titles, with three winning medals. At the Victorian Age Short Course Championships for 13 to 18 years, the club had 21 swimmers compete. Karlos Nuestro won the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke events in his age group. Vince Cartina, Joanna Denoual, Kayla Jones, Manar Mahfouz and Grace McGoldrick all made finals across the competition, with swimmers recording 57 personal best times from 111 swims. At the 11-12 years Victorian Short Course Championships, Alisha Walters and Layla Mahofouz both medalled, winning silver and bronze respectively in the 200 metre butterfly in their age groups. Melton placed 13th on combined points from

the two age group championships. At the open age short course Championships, the club had 11 swimmers compete.

gold with two other shooters in the junior event. One of the most promising shooters in the country, Armstrong has already been selected in his second World Championship team, to be held in Wagga Wagga next year. He has been named junior team captain. Armstrong said the fact the competition

is in Wagga Wagga could work in his favour. He’s competed at that venue a number of times, including most recently on the weekend. “The pressure is already off being selected for that team,” he said. “I’ll be a bit more comfortable knowing the environment and having shot there. It’s a real honour to represent your country at home.”

Plumpton shooter Thomas Armstrong stunned himself and the world with victory at the World Universal Trench shooting championships in France recently. Representing Australia for just the second time, the 17-year-old held his nerve to win the junior event. It was only when he led the event heading into the final day of competition that he realised he was in with a chance of winning. “I’d been shooting well over here and was confident that I would go alright,” he said. “Coming into the last day I was leading which was a bit of a surprise. I came hoping to get more exposure in a big event. “The nerves were getting pretty bad. I didn’t want to be the person who stuffed it up.” Armstrong held his nerves during his final round, focusing on things other than the result. With either a gold or silver medal secured having shot 189 out of 200, Armstrong went and watched an Aussie teammate shoot, to keep his attention occupied while the final shooters shot in his competition. “Three or four people came running down and said I had won,” he said. “I had to go double check as I didn’t believe them.” That wasn’t the end of his trip to Europe, with Armstrong then travelling to Italy to compete in the Italian Cup ISSF trap competition - an Olympic discipline. He shot 119 out of 125 in qualification and an impressive 45 out of 50 in the single barrel final to claim the gold medal in the junior section. The qualification score was enough to make the senior final as well but he wasn’t allowed to compete in both. Armstrong said having previously represented Australia, it made things a lot easier the second time and he was more prepared for what to expect. He said while the win doesn’t get him entry into any events, it would help put his name out

Everest reaches a new peak By Alistair Kennedy Ford Everest is a big, rugged 4WD / SUV that’s been around in other countries since 2003 but didn’t arrive in Australia until the release of the third generation model in late 2015. Although it’s fully imported from Thailand it is an important model for Ford Australia as the company moves away from vehicle production while retaining local employment by providing technical input through its research and development investment. Although the arrival of Ford Everest almost dove-tailed with the departure of the popular Territory, the two vehicles are quite different. Everest is a serious off-roader that’s built on the same platform as the company’s Ranger ute, while the locally-produced Territory was a typical urban family wagon based on the Falcon. Everest, as the name suggests, is big. At just under five metres long and over two metres wide it takes up a fair bit of road space. It has a versatile and spacious cabin capable of carrying up to seven occupants and gear in relative comfort. Our Everest road test vehicle was the entry-level Ambiente AWD. It comes with 17-inch alloy wheels which tend to look a bit puny inside the large wheel arches designed to cater for the 20-inchers of the top-spec Titanium. The big and bold chromed trapezoidal radiator grille is flanked by the latest in integrated projector headlamp/daytime running light set-ups that improves visibility to approaching drivers in poor weather conditions. At the rear there are sculpted tail lamps with integrated LED lighting. The higher specced Trend and Titanium models also get running boards.

Everest is available in three variants, Ambiente, Trend and Titanium spanning a price range from $47,990 to $74,701. The entry-level Ambiente has five seats with a pair of third-row seats available for an additional $1000. Trend and Titanium models have seven seats. Ambiente and Trend come with either rearor four-wheel drive. All Everest models are powered by Ford’s 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel Duratorq engine as used in the Ranger. Towing capacity of up to 3000kg is offered if the trailer is braked. It’s not the quietest diesel engine we’ve

encountered but shouldn’t be an issue with a vehicle of this sort. The only gearbox is a six-speed automatic. All Everest models employ an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen for infotainment system display and control together with a 4.2-inch colour instrumentation screen for driving data. We split our fuel consumption readings between the on-road and off-road segments of our week-long road test. On the suburban motorway component we logged an impressive 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway. But the beast devoured anything up to 16 litres of diesel per 100 prowling around town.
