Auto jobs set to go By Esther Lauaki and Goya Dmytryshchak
Big week for little humans
(Shawn Smits)
Up to 20 jobs are believed to be at risk at a Melton plastics manufacturer as the effects of Toyota Australia’s Altona plant closure are felt further west. MHG Plastic Industries, which manufactures automotive body mouldings, announced last week that job losses were on the cards for workers across the company. Toyota Australia stopped making cars at its Altona plant last week, signalling the end of auto manufacturing in Victoria. Australian Manufacturing Workers Union divisional secretary Dave Smith said more than 2600 direct employees and at least 3000 supply-chain workers would lose their jobs. The factory closure signals the end of $1 billion in annual exports for cars and parts. Union representative Leon White told Star Weekly the closure of one of MHG Plastic Industries’ largest clients could mean a change of direction for the company. Mr White said the feeling among its members was “doom and gloom”. “They’ve [MHG Plastic] announced 20 redundancies and the workers won’t know who’s going until next month,” Mr White said. “When that happens, those who are made redundant will be on site for another week working with careers advisors and budget specialists before they leave.” He said management has also called for voluntary redundancies. Star Weekly contacted MHG Plastics for comment but they had not replied by deadline. At Laverton North, Toyota car-seat manufacturer Toyota Boshoku is understood to have started shedding close to 400 workers. Components importer and manufacturer Toyota Tsusho confirmed some of its western suburbs companies would be downsized while others would close. The last Toyota Camry went down the Altona production line about noon last Tuesday. Melton South’s Matthew Kinson, an employee for nearly 19 years, said he had a feeling of pride whenever a Toyota drove by. “Something that I always reflect back on when a Camry passes me is, ‘I could have made that car’,” he said. “It’s a bloody good car to drive – made in Australia.” Toyota Australia president Dave Buttner said 1300 workers Australia-wide would be retained and the Altona site would be developed into a centre of excellence.
All children are welcome to check out what’s happening throughout Melton for Children’s Week. The week celebrates the talents, skills, achievements and rights of young people and highlights the importance of educational services. Children’s Week, which runs between October 21 and 29, includes a host of free events for families. Melton council will have two free family fun days – one at Melton Community Hall on Tuesday, October 24 and another at the Taylors Hill Youth and Community Centre on Thursday, October 26 from 10am-1pm. BYO picnic lunch. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey encouraged children and their families to come along and join in the fun. “There will be lots of free, fun activities including arts and crafts, an animal petting farm, music, roving performers, and a jumping castle,” Cr Ramsey said. Free child restraint fittings and anti-theft number plate screw fittings are being offered at both events. Information: www.melton.vic.gov.au SIENNA, 7

Parking works remain on track VicTrack and Melton council are calling for commuters to be patient for a while longer as parking upgrades wrap up at the train station. Station parking has been tight since works to install 270 more car spaces, being carried out by VicTrack, started in June forcing the closure of part of the carpark. One frustrated commuter copped a $95 fine for parking illegally last month but contested it, saying the temporary carpark did not fulfill the needs of those who catch the train.
“I encourage those who were fined at the Melton train station [on September 14] to contest the fine,” the commuter posted on a Melton/Bacchus Marsh residents’ Facebook page. “I had 50 of the applications for infringement review [forms] printed and placed them on cars with fines … At 4pm that only covered about half that were there at that time and considering the incident occurred around midday, imagine the revenue!” Melton council compliance manager Ian Stewart said that “less than a handful” of fines
were issued by officers at Melton train station in the 2016-17 financial year, and even fewer were contested. “Melton council understands commuters may be feeling frustrated about parking near Melton train station while VicTrack upgrades the carpark with 270 new spaces,” Mr Stewart told Star Weekly. “However, the safety of residents remains council’s first priority. “Parking illegally across footpaths and access points creates a hazard for pedestrians, including wheelchair users, and older people.”
Fundraiser a step in the right direction Matt Chesher and Kirsten Walker are taking each day a step at a time after the loss of their daughter Scarlett Belle. They’re hoping their participation in national fundraiser Walk for Prems this month will help to support the families of premature babies. The Hillside couple will walk at the October 29 event as part of a team named in baby Scarlett’s honour. Walk for Prems 2017 is the largest annual fundraiser by Life’s Little Treasures Foundation – a charity dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or before 37 weeks gestation. Scarlett was born at 24 weeks on January 5 this year and lived for just 22 days. “It was a roller coaster in hospital,” Matt said. “We were expecting our first child and everything was going fine … we were on holiday when all of a sudden she arrived early. “All that support has been incredible. We have been making sure that we have time for each other because times like these can be really hard on couples.” Scarlett is never far from her parents’ thoughts. Matt said they “give her a kiss” every day. He said the walk will be an opportunity for the couple to share support with others like themselves and raise awareness. “You don’t know much about premmie babies and how common it is until you find yourself in that situation,” Matt said. “We just don’t want people to go through what we went through and we want to raise some funds for the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation to find out more about premature births.” The Melbourne Walk for Prems event is on Sunday, October 29 at Palms Lawn, Albert Park Lake, Albert Park. Online registrations close on October 26. Another walk will be held on the same day at Wendouree Parade, Lake Wendouree, Ballarat. Details: www.walkforprems.org.au. Esther Lauaki
A statement from VicTrack asked commuters for their patience until the upgrades are completed at the end of November. “During the works, we encourage people to use the temporary carpark provided and comply with council parking restrictions on local streets.” The works are part of the state government’s $20 million station carpark upgrades program being rolled out across metropolitan and regional train stations which aims to improve accessibility and enhance safety through new lighting, CCTV and signage.
Motorists score blitz attention Speedsters on Melton and Moorabool roads were caught out during a four-day road safety blitz during grand final weekend. More than 7000 Victorians were spoken to by police in relation to traffic offences in the statewide police operation called Scoreboard. Among those flouting the law were 72 drivers on Melton and Moorabool roads who copped fines for speeding; 16 were in unregistered vehicles; four were not wearing seatbelts; two were disqualified; and three were driving while over the legal alcohol limit. Police said a Melton driver was nabbed while drug affected and another three drivers were unlicensed. One car was impounded. Road policing command assistant commissioner Doug Fryer said it was disheartening that many motorists still don’t adhere to some basic road rules. “Year in year out, we still see very similar results whereby a core group of motorists think they can flout the law,” he said. “I know that motorists still try to get away with using their mobiles, but the very basics of not wearing your seatbelt, I just don’t understand it. “I find it unacceptable also that over 2200 motorists were caught speeding – when you break it down, that is about 563 motorists a day caught risking not only their lives but the lives of others. “We know speed not only kills but increases your risk of serious injury.” Operation Scoreboard ran statewide from midnight on Thursday, September 28, to midnight on Sunday, October 1. $1m to help solve murder case By Esther Lauaki Police are offering $1 million for information about the death of a Melton South mother in her home about a decade ago. Mother of three Cindy Crossthwaite was killed in her Andrew Street house on June 20, 2007. The 41-year-old was found by her father Philip who went to Ms Crossthwaite’s house to check on her after she failed to collect her two oldest children, 10-year-old Jesmine and eight-year-old Nicholas, from school. Her youngest child, 15-month-old Jonas, was
in the house at the time of his mother’s murder. Ms Crossthwaite was last seen dropping Jesmine and Nicholas off at school about 9am in Melton South earlier the same day. An autopsy later revealed she died of head injuries. Homicide squad investigators received new information about the case from members of the public following media coverage of the 10-year anniversary of Cindy’s death in June this year. Detective Inspector Michael Hughes said one person provided specific information to police about the case, including a claim that
more than one person was involved and that Ms Crossthwaite might have been stalked in the weeks leading up to her death. Inspector Hughes said 10 years was a tragically long time for a family to go without answers. “For the Crossthwaite family to spend a decade not really knowing why Cindy died or who was responsible is absolutely heart-breaking,” he said. “Cindy’s death has remained an open Homicide Squad investigation since that day in June 2007 and the fact that members of the public have come forward to police this year
with information shows there are still people out there who know what happened and that are capable of helping us solve this crime.” Inspector Hughes hoped the announcement of a $1 million reward would encourage people to help solve the case. The reward will be paid at the discretion of the police chief commissioner for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au
Leisure centre revamp Work has begun on the expansion of the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre. Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz and Melton mayor Sophie Ramsay were on hand for the official start of the $5.8 million project last week. It will mean the addition of two indoor multi-purpose courts, unisex change rooms, spectator seating, landscaping and accessible amenities. Ms Kairouz said the expansion was necessary to ensure the growing population in Caroline Springs and surrounding suburbs had easy access to a wide range of recreation facilities. “This will mean better sport and recreation facilities for Caroline Springs families, close to home,” she said. “Through our Growing Suburbs Fund we’re building the new facilities that our rapidly
growing outer suburbs need.” Cr Ramsey echoed the minister’s sentiments. “It’s fantastic to see quality sporting facilities being built in our city, encouraging people to get fit and active,” she said. The leisure centre expansion work is expected to be completed by December next year. Ewen McRae

Bookworms rejoice – Little Library is back at the Melton train station permanently to keep literature lovers entertained. Readers are encouraged to “take a book and leave a book” and foster a love of reading while strengthening neighbourhood ties. The libraries were launched by Linking Melton South, a community-based movement facilitated by Djerriwarrh Health Services, earlier this year. Chief executive Andrew Freeman said the Little Libraries project promotes literacy and
reading and also helps to minimise waste by encouraging books to be re-used and donated. “After hosting a ‘pop up’ Little Library at the Melton train station as part of a broader community project … Linking Melton South has now reinstated the library due to popular demand,” Mr Freeman said. The Melton station Little Library is in a bookcase inside the station, and is accessible when the building is open, Monday to Saturday. Esther Lauaki

PETstock stores in Melton and Bacchus Marsh will hold their annual microchip blitz on the weekend of October 21 and 22, with a fee of just $10 being charged. Lake Caroline has become a dumping ground for shopping trolleys and litter. In the past six months, Melton council has fished more than 30 cubic metres of debris from the lake, including 18 shopping trolleys, styrene foam packing material and other forms of litter. Melton operations manager Leslie Stokes said lake litter was an ongoing problem, despite the strategies in place to help deal with it. “Melton City council conducts regular scheduled cleans of Lake Caroline one to two times a week,” he said. “However, an abundance of litter from surrounding areas means rubbish is frequently being blown into the lake. “On some occasions, council officers have fished up to three cubic metres of debris from the lake in a single day. “In addition to regular litter cleans of the lake’s edge, council aims to use a boat for on-lake litter removal three times a year, usually after a storm event. The most recent boat clean was completed last week.” Despite the cleaning endeavours, the lake has become a hotspot for abandoned shopping trolleys. The issue first became one of concern in May of this year when eight trolleys were fished out of the lake, along with 8.9 cubic metres of debris. The following months did little to improve the situation, with two trolleys and 4.6 cubic metres of debris removed from the lake in June, followed by 12.1 cubic metres of debris and three trolleys in July and 5.7 cubic metres and five trolleys in August. While the upkeep of the lake falls to council, discarded shopping trolleys remain

Sick cat scam warning By Goya Dmytryshchak A western suburbs animal rescue group is warning the community to be wary of scammers selling domestic kittens as special breeds, with many of the cats infected with parvovirus. RSPCA Victoria major investigations team leader Lisa Calleja confirmed her organisation was investigating reports regarding the sale of sick kittens in Victoria’s west. Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue founder Nathan Miles said the suspected ringleader was selling kittens from a premises in Newport believed to be infected with parvovirus.

Their motivation is purely deception, money and - Nathan Miles greed

“He’s procuring kittens fraudulently from the general community, organisations and shelters using fake ID and he is then selling these animals as special breeds,” Mr Miles said. “When he scams a cat from a group, he then impersonates to the public that he works for that shelter or group, as the paperwork has all the organisation’s details on it. “He then illegally alters the documentation to change the kitten to a breed. “One woman bought a kitten for $490 believing it was a ragdoll cross Burmese – and in reality it was a domestic medium-hair moggy.” Mr Miles became aware of the scam after a carer spotted a cat his group had adopted out being listed for sale online. After issuing a scam alert on Facebook, Mr Miles was inundated

with victims coming forward, many of whom had bought cats that subsequently required veterinary treatment or had to be euthanised. “The problem is, every animal [the scammer] is taking into that house is coming into a parvo environment … and that’s how they’re coming out, sick,” he said. “Sadly, they don’t care about the kitten or kittens whatsoever and their motivation is purely deception, money
and greed. This scam is cruel and vile and they appear to not care whatsoever about the welfare or wellbeing of the cat.” Anyone with information or who has concerns for the welfare of an animal can make a report to the RSPCA via rspcavic.org or 9224 2222. The RSPCA also advises prospective cat owners to read its Smart Kitten and Cat Buyer’s Guide at kb.rspca.org.au/afile/335/118/
A group that has dedicated the past two years to the recovery of Scotsburn after it was ravaged by fires has won a state award for its commitment to the community. Scotsburn Recovery Committee last week won the Victorian Resilient Australia Community Award for its work since the 2015 fires. Moorabool mayor David Edwards said the committee tailored events and programs ensuring projects were planned by the community, for the community. “We’re very proud of council staff … and all the local members of the committee, who have done such an amazing job at organising fundraisers, community events, information sessions and re-building,” Cr Edwards said. The Blackwood CEMP Committee was also named a finalist at the awards. The win means the recovery committee will represent Victoria at the National awards in Canberra later this year. Esther Lauaki

Bridge crash a costly accident days in intensive care. Twelve people in all, including the driver, were taken to hospital. At the time, Metropolitan Fire Brigade commander Andrew O’Connell said the ordeal would have been “absolutely terrifying” for the people on board. “Luckily … they all ducked their heads and closed their eyes to keep themselves out of trouble. And I think that’s actually helped them remarkably keep uninjured,” he said. Tape was used to cover the branding on the side of the bus after the incident as the scene was cleared.
The company that operates the bus that slammed into the notorious Montague Street bridge last year could be fined as much as $1.5 million after it was charged by Transport Safety Victoria. A dozen people were injured when the Gold Bus operated by Bacchus Marsh Coaches hit the three-metre-high South Melbourne bridge on February 22. The bus was 3.8 metres high. It took firefighters nearly an hour to free four people trapped inside the vehicle. Four passengers suffered serious injuries, one with broken bones and another spent three
Gold Bus director Matthew Baird defended the decision. “We are out to protect our brand,” Mr Baird said at the time. The passengers had been travelling to see Melbourne landmarks as part of an international tourism conference. Transport Safety Victoria, which has charged the bus company and two of its officers, alleges that “those accused knew, or ought reasonably to have known, about the risk posed by low-clearance bridges and available means to eliminate or reduce this risk.”
According to the Bus Safety Act 2009, bus service operators must ensure the safety of their service by eliminating or reducing “risks to safety so far as reasonably possible”. Since the incident, the company had made efforts to mitigate the risk posed by low clearance bridges. A filing hearing for the case will be held in the Magistrates’ Court on October 17, with the maximum penalty for individuals set at $285,426 and for the company $1,427,130. – The Age

Kites ready for flight Spirits are set to soar once again at the Brimbank Kite Festival. For the seventh straight year the CALDERS Community group will run the family festival, with organiser Anni Ang saying it was shaping up to be another massive event. “We normally get at least 500 people along, weather permitting, so it is a big day,” she said. “We’ve partnered with Watergardens shopping centre to promote it in the lead up, and we’ll have our usual kite demonstrations … we’re hopeful local MP Natalie Hutchins will be down to open the event once again.” The kite festival started as a project for a group of Brimbank residents undergoing leadership training provided by Brimbank council in 2011. They identified flying kites as a fun outdoor
activity that had no barriers for participation, so colourful kites flying over Delahey Recreation Reserve have become a popular attraction. “People can see the kites from far away, and if they come up, they see kids, parents and grandparents all having fun,” Ms Ang said. “I’ve had people in past years come up and tell me they used to make and fly kites as a kid, and they love showing their own children how to get them flying. It’s a great day out for the family.” The Sydenham Kite Festival will run on Sunday, November 12, from 11am-4pm at Delahey Recreation Reserve. MY PLACE Rosa McCarroll has been collecting odds and bobs for three decades, she’ll open her Balliang garden to the public this weekend. She spoke to Esther Lauaki. What is your connection to Moorabool? I grew up in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs but spent most of my adult life in Victoria’s north. I always loved to visit “the country” in Bacchus Marsh as a child. How long have you lived in the area? I finally moved to Balliang East 11 years ago after my children had all left home. I found a small property near to extended family members where I could build a garden and enjoy uninterrupted sunrises and sunsets. What are you passionate about? I am a passionate gardener, but the possibilities are limited by low rainfall (I rely on tank water), heavy clay soil and rocky ground. How long have you been a collector and what things do you keep?
(Shawn Smits)
I have always liked “old stuff” rather than new, and began collecting things that reminded me of my childhood – such as handmade clothes, embroidery, coloured glass and Johnson ware crockery – about 30 years ago, when op-shops sold them relatively cheaply.
what’s on
Tell me about your upcoming open garden. Why did you decide to host an event? The collection has been expanded by inveterate
garage-saling and gifts from family and friends over many years, and has now started taking up too much space. It is time to try to pass things on. I decided to host an open garden and trash and treasure sale to recoup some expenses and have fun with friends. What is the best thing about living in Moorabool? The best thing about Moorabool is the weather – not too hot or too cold – and the friendly people. I think its greatest asset is its library, and helpful staff, where I can indulge another love for reading. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? The only thing I would change is to have a heated indoor pool in Bacchus Marsh where I could swim year round to have fun and maintain fitness. The garden and old shearing shed at 3304 Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road, Balliang East will be open on October 14 and 15 between 10am and 4pm. Gold coin entry to buy water and fertiliser, with sausage sizzle, and tea or coffee and home-made biscuits, for sale. A local author will be selling her latest book, and another gardening enthusiast will have succulents for sale too.

Many senior moments Plenty of laughter and learning are in store this month as the Victorian Seniors Festival gets under way. University of the Third Age (U3A) Melton will be among hundreds of groups hosting activities and promoting seniors programs throughout the festival, which will include scrabble nights, art exhibitions, movie screenings and other entertainment. More than 1500 events and activities will be held around the state as part of the festival, now in its 35th year, which celebrates the contribution that Victorians more than 60 years old make to their communities.
The Minister for Ageing, Martin Foley, launched the festival last Sunday. “The festival is part of our work to create an inclusive Victoria for all those aged 60 years and above, and provide a range of activities to keep our seniors healthy and active,” he said. The festival also helps acknowledge the high rate of volunteering among Victorian seniors. FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir enjoys a return trip to the Vault Consider The Sauce’s senior partner spent much of last year’s AFL grand final day in and around the Vault. You’ll be unsurprised to learn I was way more concerned about where the next beer and the next goal were coming from rather than about chowing down. But I did notice that there were many happy customers enjoying a range of food – mostly, IIRC, burgers and the like. Maybe, I thought, the latest outfit to inhabit the old bank on the corner of Ballarat and Canterbury streets has shaken of the bad location karma that had seen a couple of previous businesses come and go. It took us a while, but we’re back to find out. We’re doing so early on a week night on which a couple of special offers are going around. But even without them – a burger deal with drink for $18, parmigiana for $15 – we reckon the Vault is a good thing. There’s nothing ambitious or innovative going on here. It’s a cosy (and warm) room, the staff are on the ball and we eat well for very little outlay. We’re not sure how anyone would go here with some of the more exotic fare, but for your more straightforward offerings, the Vault is reliably feeding people and making them happy. Think of it as a pub-not-pub. I check to make sure the parmas on offer – there are four – are made with real-deal

chicken. They are – and how. My traditional outing is as thick as any I’ve had – yet is still superbly juicy throughout. This is top-shelf parmigiana – big, even a little crisp around the extremities, the flavour of the ham and tomato sauce coming through in turns. The chips are fine but could’ve been hotter. And with such a magnificent star of the plate, all that was needed salad-wise was some simple leaves, tomato and cucumber. Those three are all present, but so are plenty of things – including sweet potato and eggplant – that put this salad in the try-too-hard bag. Still, at $15 this is a red-hot bargain. Bennie reckons – from an ultra-hardcore, fussy, expert perspective – his southern fried chicken burger ($16.50, $18 Monday-Thursday with a pot of beer or cider) doesn’t reach any ecstatic heights. But he is well pleased anyway. There’s a nice slab of chook in there, along with sriracha mayo slaw, plenty of pickles and cheese. He allows me a sample – and its tastes good.

43 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 10, 2017
SPORT Melton South happy with right royal mix Melton South Royals are hoping to build on last season’s Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1 results. The Royals finished sixth last season in their first season in the VTCA, at times showing they could match it with the top sides. President Paul Davies said the club thinks it has the right mix to challenge this season. “It’s going really well and we’ve recruited,” he said. “We’ve got guys wanting to come to our club. We hope these guys will help to take us to finals, if not the grand final.” Tom Button, a wicketkeeper batsman, has come across from Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association side Melton. Matthew Kozole joins the Royals from Laverton as an assistant coach and opening bowler and Graeme Bennett has crossed from Deer Park. Last year’s captain, Paul Hetherington, has taken over the coaching reigns from Blake
Ivory. Davies said Hetherington was ready to step up to the next level. “We had a few people interested in the role and when it came down to it, we thought Paul was the right person,” he said. The club is again fielding five senior sides, with two sides – the seconds and the one-day team – defending premierships. The club also has two junior sides this season, up from one last season. Two years ago the club didn’t have a single junior side. A big change for the club in the off season, has been a name change. The club was previously known as Melton South Primary School Cricket Club. Davies said the timing had been right to change the name. “We originally started as a junior club,” he said. “In recent seasons we’ve had no affiliation with the school. We moved location from
opposite the school to Melton Recreation Reserve a couple of seasons ago. That’s where Melton South Football Club is also based. It’s been something the players have been asking for a number of years.” The start of the Royals’ season was delayed a week. With a number of grounds not ready, VTCA officials decided to postpone the opening round. Round one matches will now be played on the reserve day, December 3. The Royals will be hoping to get out on the field this weekend against Seabrook in a one-day match. In other matches, Melton Centrals will play Grand United. In north A1, Sydenham Hillside will face Caroline Springs. Tara Murray
Eynesbury off to a flyer By Tara Murray Life in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association has got off to a perfect start for Eynesbury. After making the move across from Western Suburbs Churches & Community Cricket Association in the off season, the Eagles are aiming to be competitive in B grade. On Saturday, they opened their season with a strong win against Bacchus Marsh. Eagles playing coach Luke Castle was happy with the first-up win. He said that as he and his brother Hayden had played previously in the GDCA, the club had a rough idea what to expect. “With the team we had yesterday we wanted to be competitive,” he said. “It wasn’t a shock to get the win, but we’re happy about it.” Tristan Francis set the tone by making 59 and was well supported by the rest of the top order. The top four all made 29 or more in the total of 7-214. While Castle knew his side had a strong order, he was taken aback when told the par score for the Bacchus Marsh ground was only about 160. The Bulls got off to a good start in reply and were 0-44 and then looked in control at 2-102. But the Eagles slowed things down, eventually restricting the Bulls to 7-177. Castle said they felt confident they could get the job done after setting such a big target. “They needed five runs an over from the start,” he said. “They got off to a good start and their opening batsmen took to us a bit. “With 15 overs remaining, they needed eight an over … with 10 overs left, they still needed 10 an over, so we felt comfortable.” Castle took four wickets and was the pick of the bowlers. The coach praised the efforts of opening bowler Tyson Orr, who is just 17. Orr is one of a number of younger players who will get opportunities with the Eagles this season. Saturday’s side featured just four players from last season’s premiership win, including their three star batsmen, Francis and the two Castles. Castle said they had lost about 20 players through the off season. “We had a lot of guys from Werribee who haven’t returned,” he said. “A few guys retired and a few have dropped back to the lower grades. “We’re going to bring in some younger players. Saints restricted the Dragons to 9-138 off their 40 overs. Jason Orr was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-12 off seven overs. In reply, the Saints made the runs with ease. They produced 4-140 with 17 overs and six wickets to spare. John Jensen top scored with 49.
Two local netball bodies have been named finalists in the Netball Victoria Community Awards. AFL Goldfields, which manages four competitions including the Riddell District and Ballarat netball leagues, and the St Albans Caroline Springs Netball Association, have both been named finalists for the outstanding large association/league of the year. Wolves rocket up rankings to secure tilt at flag Melton Wolves will play off for the Gridiron Victoria men’s division 2 championship in just their second season. After finishing bottom last season, the Wolves have surprised everyone, including themselves, with their improvement. The Wolves finished the regular season in second, earning themselves a finals berth. On Saturday, they easily accounted for Western Crusaders II to seal a grand final spot. The club’s president and men’s coach, Tiff Lykke, said the development of the side had been remarkable. Lykke, the first female coach of a men’s side in Australia, said that despite being a minority sport, the club had 50 players for its men’s side.
“We’ve been around two and half years,” she said. “After finishing bottom last season, our focus was on improving this year. “The hard work and sacrifices you make have paid off.” The Wolves entered their semi-final against the Crusaders as favourites, having won both the regular season games between the sides. The Wolves were able to control the game from start to finish for a 20-0 win. Making the grand final even more special for the Wolves, it will be played at their home ground in Melton. They will play Northern Raiders, who defeated Monash Barbarians 7-6 in the other semi-final.
Lykke said Gridiron Victoria chose the location weeks ago. “The chance to win the championship game at your home ground is pretty amazing,” she said. “I think our ground is the best ground. When they asked, we weren’t going to say no.” Lykke believes the grand final will be an even match, with the sides 1-1 in the head-to-head record this season. The Raiders finished on top of the ladder, one win ahead of the Wolves. “They won the first match and we won the second,” she said. “It is going to be a good match and I think evenly matched. Those who don’t look at the scores will think they are favourites, as they finished on top of the ladder.”
Whatever the result, the Wolves will keep on building momentum. Lykke said they would likely remain in division 2 next season, regardless of the grand final result. She said they would look to add a women’s side and would eventually like to have junior teams. The grand final will run from 11am at MacPherson Park Recreation Reserve, Melton, on Saturday. The division 1 grand final, Vic Bowl XXXIII, will follow, with the Western Raiders playing Melbourne Uni Royals. Tara Murray
Bulls keep calm and carry on
New Bacchus Marsh captain-coach Ben Robertson. (Damian Visentini)
By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh played a steady game to kick off its Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup season with a win. The Bulls, who played finals last season, had a composed innings with the bat, before some patience with the ball to seal the win against Woodend. New captain-coach Ben Robertson, who returned to the club after a season off, said it was a positive way to start the club’s campaign. “With the batting, we had a plan before we went out there,” he said. “It was about saving wickets in the first half of the innings, with the mindset to go harder in the second half. “We put the score on the board and something for our bowlers to bowl at. We thought maybe we were 10-20 runs short, but at the start of the day I would have been happy with 150.” The Bulls made 4-151. Dennis O’Loughlin top scored on 35 runs. Woodend started its innings well and looked in control at 1-63. The loss of three quick wickets turned things in favour of the Bulls. Robertson said they steadied and it worked in their favour. “We thought it was slipping away from us. We slowed things down and got it back on our terms,” he said. A second collapse was still to come for Woodend, which lost the last six wickets for 14 runs to be all out for 106. Jared Taylor and O’Loughlin took three wickets apiece for the Bulls, as they shared the wickets around. Robertson said it was a real team performance that got the job done. The new coach said the opportunity to be
captain-coach at the club he’s spent plenty of years at was what attracted him to return to cricket after stepping away last year. Robertson is one of two major recruiting coups for the Bulls, with James Lidgett the other. Lidgett played premier cricket with Essendon and previously captained Greenvale Kangaroos.
‘‘
It was about saving wickets in the first half of - Ben Robertson the innings
’’
Robertson said Lidgett, who lives in Bacchus Marsh, wanted a year off premier cricket. “It’s obviously a big coup for the club,” he said. “He’s slotted in nicely and having somebody of his calibre in the field was really good. He was a calm head and someone I can lean on.” Madushanka Ekanayake, who was the competition’s leading wicket taker last season, has also returned. Robertson, who said finals was the aim, said there would be improvement from some other players who have come through the ranks. Meanwhile in other matches, it was a tough start for reigning premiers Gisborne against Diggers Rest Bulla. The Burras made 106 in their innings, with Sumanjan Fernando the only player to really get going making 40. Adrian Barbour took three wickets for the Dragons. In reply the Dragons were bowled out for just 83. Nathan Crosland, in his debut for the Burras, took three wickets. Riddell, Rupertswood and Sunbury were the other winners.
MELTON JUNIOR FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB
It was a tough start for Melton Centrals and St Anthonys in the CV Women’s Community Cricket’s north west competition. With both sides fielding a women’s side for the first time, it was always going to be a challenge. Centrals were competitive against Tullamarine on Sunday at Leo Dineen Reserve, but in the end didn’t have enough runs on the board. Sent in by Tullamarine, Centrals were bowled out for 143 off 34 overs. Tullamarine made the runs four wickets down in the 28th over. They finished 4-148. Denise Lloyd proved the thorn in Centrals’ hopes, making 56 not out for Tullamarine. It was a struggle first up for St Anthonys
against Geelong, which finished runners-up last season. The Saints made just 17, with Jodie Brown making 10 of those runs. Only two other players scored. In reply, Geelong made the runs with ease and kept on batting making 3-308. Dianne Fleming, Tia Walker and Jacqueline Haffendon took the wickets for the Saints. This week Melton Centrals face Melbourne University, the third new team in the competition, Melbourne University suffered a first-up loss to Altona Roosters. St Anthonys take on EMP/Williamstown Congs. Congs were easily beaten by Craigieburn. Tara Murray

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
Rematch ends in a replay By Tara Murray Darley fell just short of an opening round win against Wendouree in the Ballarat Cricket Association. In a rematch of last season’s grand final, the game went down to the wire, but ended in the same result. This time it was a lot a closer, with Wendouree winning by six runs. Batting first, Wendouree made 8-203 off its 50 overs, with skipper Gavin Webb top scoring with 59. Matthew Cape was the pick of the bowlers for the Lions, who were without their three Sri Lankan imports. Cape took three wickets, while Ben Longhurst and Hayden Jamieson took two wickets each. The Lions got off to the worst start in their innings, losing Zac Ticehurst for two. They settled, before losing two quick wickets to put them behind the eight ball at 3-49. The wickets continued to fall regularly leaving the Lions at 7-121 with a lot of work ahead if they were to pull off an upset win, with only their bottom four batsmen left. The bottom order, led by youngster Mitchell Ward in his first XI debut, weren’t going to give up without a fight and pushed the Lions’ total towards the needed runs. Unfortunately they ran out of time, finishing 9-197 off the 50 overs. Ward finished 45 not out, while Cape completed a strong game making 45 to add to his three wickets. East Ballarat and North Ballarat were the other two winners in the first grade opening round. The Lions second XI got a first-up win, while the third side was beaten with two overs remaining.
Melton opens with a win Melton started the Bowls Victoria Pennant season in strong fashion on Saturday. Playing on its newly laid green, Melton opened up its account in division 1, section 1, with an 81 (16)-57 (2) win against Fitzroy Victoria. Melton secretary John Adams said everyone was rapt to open the season with a win. “They were last year’s runners-up,” he said. “It’s pretty hard to get winning rinks over them and we got three rinks up.” Ray Gnjidic, David George and Travis Kelly led the winning rinks for Melton, with Conrad Dawson’s rink losing by five shots. Adams said the winning team wasn’t even their strongest side with players still to come in. “Samantha Shannahan [who has played for Australia] didn’t play and we’ve got a couple more players in the wings. “I put a clearance through on Friday and I’ve got another three clearances to put through. We’ve got players wanting to come to the club.” While Melton’s top side took the win, it was a mixed day for the club’s other sides. The division 2 side gave up a 15 shot lead at afternoon tea, to lose by seven shots. The division 4 team lost by one shot, the division 6 and 7 teams also lost. Tara Murray
