Melton’s utility bill pain ‘‘
It can also be very distressing for the customer
’’
- Cynthia Gebert
“As the credit case studies in the report show, investigation of these types of complaints is very challenging and time-consuming – for us and for the company. It can also be very distressing for the customer.’’ Ms Gebert attributed the 11 per cent overall fall in complaints to better complaint handling by energy and water companies. Despite the overall fall in cases, the report shows increases in the past year in complaints about the provision of an energy or water connection (up 23 per cent); how company activities or network assets affect land or property (up 15 per cent); and the supply of energy or water (up 11 per cent). Debt collection in Melton over utility bills is among the highest in the state, according to a new report from the energy and water ombudsman. The report, released this week, outlined the number of utility bill cases lodged with the ombudsman’s office for the past year to June. The figures show there were 770 Melton utility bill cases referred to the ombudsman in 2016-17, of which 120 cases involved debt collection. In Wyndham, there were 120 debt collection cases from 895 cases reported. In Brimbank, there were 101 debt collection issues out of a total 853 cases. Moorabool had eight debt collections from 101 cases reported. In 2016-17, the number of utility bill cases lodged by customers across the state fell from 36,152 to 32,002. Disconnection or restriction of services topped the list of customer concerns for the fourth year, closely followed by complaints about high bills. Customers also complained about credit default listings and billing errors. Ombudsman Cynthia Gebert said she was concerned about the capacity of many customers to stay on supply. “Affordability continues to loom large,” Ms Gebert said. “The ombudsman’s office is dealing with a high proportion of complex
complaints, many of them from customers in vulnerable situations. Often, this type of complaint involves very high arrears, which the customer cannot afford to pay. When direct negotiation between customers and companies about payment options isn’t able to deliver an outcome that works for both parties, the complaint ends up at the ombudsman.

Green light for more pokies By Esther Lauaki More than 150 additional poker machines could be allowed in Melton if proposed state government gambling reforms are approved by Parliament. The government recently announced a raft of reforms to its Gaming Machine Arrangements Bill such as limiting cash withdrawals at venues to $500 and banning the practice of cashing cheques at gaming venues. The reforms also allow for a percentage increase in the number of machines in the suburbs not covered by a regional cap on poker
machines. Municipal limits were introduced in 2009 and cover nearly all local government areas in Victoria, including Melton, at a ratio of 10 electronic gaming machines per 1000 adults. If population rises, the limit may increase. Melton council community services general manager Maurie Heaney said the number of poker machines currently in Melton is 503. Under the changes, up to 659 machines could be permitted. Mr Heaney said the council was due to review and update its responsible gambling policy, which was adopted in 2014, before April next year.
“Melton council assesses each application and proposal for additional gaming machines or new venues on its merits, on a case-by-case basis,” he said. In 2016-17, gamblers lost more than $60 million at Melton’s poker machines across seven gaming venues in the area. The Alliance for Gambling Reform is calling for the government to reduce the number of poker machines statewide and delay the reforms to allow for more community consultation. Campaigner Kelvin Thomson said the group strongly opposed more machines in Melton. He said that population growth did not
excuse the government’s decision. “This is a recipe for great damage. Pokies take a terrible toll on families and the community,” Mr Thomson said. “The increase is putting these areas at greater risk of poker machine-related harm.” Gaming and Liquor Regulation Minister Marlene Kairouz said the reforms were about “protecting people and helping those who choose to gamble stick to their limits.” “We are capping pokies numbers across the state, limiting daily cash withdrawals in venues and restricting betting advertising in our public spaces,” Ms Kairouz said.

Services on the Ballarat line have exceeded the 96 per cent reliability target each month for the past year. Latest performance figures show 96.8 per cent of Ballarat line services were delivered in September and 86.2 per cent of services arrived at their destination on time. V/Line operations chief Carol-Anne Nelson said on-time performance on the Ballarat line was consistent with August. “We recognise there is still room for improvement and we have a performance plan in place to make that happen,” Ms Nelson said. She said the main reasons for delays on the Ballarat line last month were dwell times at stations and a higher-than-normal number of ill passengers, causing service interruptions. “We acknowledge delays to services are frustrating for people but the safety and welfare of our passengers is the main priority,” Ms Nelson said. “This is something our staff take very seriously and will not compromise on. Network-wide punctuality increased to 87.1 per cent – the highest result since October last year. “We are working hard behind the scenes and are pleased to see things heading in the right direction as a result,” she said. As part of the new timetable introduced on August 27, an extra 151 services were added to the V/Line network. This included 18 extra weekly services on the Ballarat line to meet demand and give passengers more choice. Details: www.ptv.vic.gov.au

Some of the world’s best riders battled it out for round two of the Australian Supercross Championships at Bacchus Marsh Motorcross Club at the weekend. Held over six rounds throughout four states, the national championships attracted high-profile riders from Australia and overseas. The competition was fierce last Saturday as Australia took on riders from the US in SX1 and SX2 classes. Local riders in the intermediate, clubman
and junior divisions also took to the track. Homegrown contenders Gavin Faith came second in the SX2 class, while recently crowned Australian motocross champion Dean Ferris came second in the SX1 standings, behind US defending champion Justin Brayton. Brayton, one of many visiting US riders, leads the championship after a convincing performance in round one. Esther Lauaki

Sam’s bricks really rock By Esther Lauaki Sam Galea is made of some tough stuff – the Melton resident has spent the past 25 years building his brick recycling business from the ground up. The Level Crossing Removal Authority is now sourcing fill from Mr Galea’s Plumpton Road Recycling Centre to use for retaining walls on the new road bridge at Melton Highway. “Using crushed and recycled bricks, as opposed to gravel, is much better for the environment, as a product that has already been manufactured is used instead, meaning that huge holes in the ground don’t need to be dug,” Mr Galea said.
‘‘
Using crushed and recycled bricks … is much - Sam Galea better
’’
The brick recycling and construction business is a labour of love for Mr Galea, who at 80 years of age still heads to the factory every day of the working week. He says coming in each day “keeps him young”. Arriving in Melbourne from Malta at the age of 16, he began his working life with a demolition company that operated in Melbourne. He recalled many occasions when he was called in to “blast” old foundations at demolished buildings next to neighbouring city buildings at 2am, which was commonplace all those years ago. “You’d never do noisy works like that in the middle of the night nowadays,” he said. “People would be up in arms.”

The business is now largely operated by his two sons, Norm and Paul, and daughters Nancy and Joan. Mr Galea is proud of the fact that he has worked for himself for the past 50 years. Level Crossing Removal Authority project director Tony Hedley said using recycled bricks
reduced the need for ground to be disturbed. He said sourcing products from local suppliers in the west was an added bonus. “This project will vastly improve travel for the people in the west and our association with local companies like Sam’s means that the benefits are two-fold,” Mr Hedley said.

Inmates soon for new prison A six-metre high, 1.7-kilometre wall surrounds Victoria’s newest prison at Ravenhall. The Ravenhall Correctional Centre will start receiving prisoners in coming weeks following its official opening last Thursday. More than 1000 cameras will keep a close watch over 1000 prisoners, including about 450 inmates on remand. The medium-security facility will be managed by GEO Group Australia under contract to the Victorian government. Corrections Minister Gayle Tierney said that the opening of the prison was an important milestone in keeping Victorians safe. “The prison will place a strong emphasis on rehabilitation to help offenders break the cycle of crime,” she said. The prison includes a specialised unit to provide dedicated forensic mental health treatment for up to 75 prisoners at a time – more than doubling the current capacity across the prison system. The Kangan Institute, YMCA and Melbourne City Mission will offer a range of rehabilitation and reintegration programs to help prepare prisoners for life after release. Forensic mental health services will be provided by Forensicare, supporting a further 100 prisoners through the mental health support they need through outpatient services. Esther Lauaki

Shot in the arm for flu fight
Filmaker Giovanna Mercuri with Cr Sophie Ramsey. (Supplied)
Light shed on dark subject By Esther Lauaki A Caroline Springs woman combined her experience in mental health work with her passion for performing arts to create a movie which speaks out against family violence. Locked In premiered in Melton in August and has since been the talk of the town with screenings all around the municipality. Novice filmmaker Giovanna Mercuri said she started her own film production company because she wanted to make movies about social issues. “I had never made a movie before and there
was a lot of growth and learning that came with this,” Mercuri said. “In my work as a social worker/counsellor, it saddened me at how common family violence is. “What is even more horrific to me, is when the person being abused does not identify the behaviour as violent and abusive. “Unfortunately, many families become so used to the abusive behaviour, that it becomes their norm. “I felt like I needed to do more … I wanted to do something that promotes early intervention.”
Locked In tells the story of a woman in a coma who feels locked in her own body but it is later discovered she is also in an abusive relationship. “The aim of this movie is to teach people how family violence affects every single person who comes across the victim and the violence, including the intern doctors who help treat her,” Mercuri said. Mercuri is working on her next project, The Target, a movie raising awareness about bullying. Locked In will screen at Taylors Hill Community Centre at 7pm on November 23. Tickets are $5.
Djerriwarrh Health Service will receive almost $1 million in state funding to relieve the pressure on the region’s hospitals following one of the worst flu seasons on record. The cash injection is part of a $115 million special flu funding support package to help hospitals cope with the surge in demand. Djerriwarrh Health Service will receive $939,601. Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said this year’s flu season had resulted in sustained pressure on Victoria’s health system with more than 14,000 flu cases reported across Victoria so far. In August, more than 3900 people visited emergency departments each day – the largest ever for August on record. Ms Pulford said the funding package will support Djerriwarrh Health to ensure patients get the care they need. “Hospitals across Western Victoria have been feeling the pressure this flu season and this extra funding will support them to keep delivering the quality care our patients need,” Ms Pulford said. “I know that local hospitals across Western Victoria have been working overtime to ensure people suffering the flu get the treatment they need.” The funding comes on top of the record $1.67 billion provided in the 2017-18 state budget to support hospitals to meet demand. Road deaths, injuries add up By Charlene Macaulay A motorcyclist who lost his life after he was flung off his bike in a road collision in Truganina was one of 15 people killed on the west’s roads in the past financial year. RoadSafe Westgate’s annual report shows that 895 people were injured – including 214 seriously injured – in 910 road collisions across the Westgate division in 2016-17. Despite a 17 per cent drop in Wyndham collisions in the 12-month period, higher numbers in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay
mean the area’s road toll remained on par with the figures of 2015-16, when 16 people were killed and 913 injured. Among the fatalities from the past financial year were a driver who failed to give way at a Braybrook intersection and drove into the path of an oncoming truck and a student heading to school on his skateboard who was struck and run over by a car in Brookfield. Hooning remains a big problem for Wyndham, accounting for just over half (178) of the 351 cars impounded between January 1 and July 31 this year, compared to 98 in Melton,
44 in Hobsons Bay and 31 in Maribyrnong. Maribyrnong recorded the highest ratio of positive breath tests, with one in every 508 drivers tested returning a positive result. Jim Giddings from RoadSafe Westgate, a road safety advocacy group with programs across Wyndham, Melton, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, said there was still a long way to go to reduce the over-representation of young drivers involved in road crashes. Sergeant Marty Wallace, from Westgate Highway Patrol, said police efforts were driven by statistical data on collisions, with a
particular focus on the times and places where fatal and serious injury collisions occurred regularly. “Our key focus areas are speeding, drink and drug driving, fatigue, distraction, mobile phone use and seat belts,” he said. Sergeant Wallace said police were currently targeting serious injury collisions along major arterials in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay through Operation Aerodyne, and would be out in force during the upcoming Melbourne Cup long weekend as part of Operation Furlong.
Blooming marvellous Melton Botanic Gardens is no longer one of the area’s best kept secrets. After nearly a decade of development and expansion the gardens were officially opened last week by Victorian Governor Linda Dessau. Friends of the Melton Botanic Gardens president John Bentley said he has looked forward to the opening since 2011 when the gardens were named. “This has been a long time coming,” Mr Bentley said. “The governor loved the gardens. “It was a great opportunity to show her around and get some recognition for all the hard work that has been done. “Currently, it’s one of the best times to come and explore the gardens because the eucalypts are in flower, the West Australian garden is looking superb, the Southern African garden is flowering and the newly painted Mediterranean garden is very impressive.
“If you want to get a sense of community and ownership of the area we welcome any volunteer who would like to be involved to come and give us a hand.” Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said it was an honour to have the governor mark the occasion. “The indigenous and bush gardens are regional highlights that form part of the outstanding transformation that has taken place here over the past 10 years,” Cr Ramsey said. “While council provided funding for the landscape design, and the installation of public toilets, reserve fencing and the car park, this much treasured space could never have come to fruition without the staggering number of hours our local volunteers put into making it a reality.” Esther Lauaki

Ballan turned on the charm when hosting the Emirates Melbourne Cup as part of its 15th annual trans-Tasman tour. The $200,000, 18-carat gold cup was the main attraction last week at a champagne breakfast at St Brigid’s Primary, a colourful street parade, an 1880s-themed lunch and a cocktail party at the Ballan Mechanics Institute to raise money for the town’s hospital. Horses, jockeys, children as well as 1968 and 1969 Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Mick Robins were among those who enjoyed the events. The famous trophy will visit 31 destinations across Australia and New Zealand before returning to Flemington for the race that stops a nation. Esther Lauaki

Last week we had the pleasure of having the Governor of Victoria, the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, visit to officially open Melton Botanic Garden.
The start of construction of Westwood Drive bridge is getting ever closer. After a long process, Council is close to finalising government approvals.

While Melton City Council has provided funding for the landscape design and installation of infrastructure, the Garden could not be what it is today without a huge number of hours of community involvement. At last count, in fact, the community had contributed more than 75,000 hours of labour towards the planning and development of the Garden.
Work on one of our City’s biggest projects has begun. The $11.8 million expansion of Caroline Springs Leisure Centre, as well as construction of a new sub-regional tennis facility, will create a wonderful space for young people in Caroline Springs. It will give them the chance to play tennis, join a club, be physically active and get away from their computer screens for a while. The tennis facility will include 12 new courts with night lighting while other features of the project include new basketball, netball and futsal courts, a competition sized outdoor netball court and new change rooms. This upgrade has been long awaiting and once complete will make this a state-of-the-art sporting precinct.
This amazing effort over the past 10 years has helped transform Melton Botanic Garden into a learning environment and a sought-after destination. And it’s easy to see why. It was great news that the State Government announced it will allocate 16 extra frontline police in the City of Melton over the next 12 months as part of a boost to police numbers in the western suburbs. It is so important that we have an appropriate police presence, so that when we need help, we can get it. For that to happen, though, it is necessary to have a 24-hour police station in Caroline Springs. Council supports having more police and regularly advocates with Victoria Police to further increase the police force in our City.  ’    ’ €

MY PLACE Ballan Community Health doctor David Llewellyn planned on working in the town for five years – but he’s decided to stay a while longer. He talks to Esther Lauaki. What is your connection to Moorabool? I live in Ballarat but have worked here full-time for the past five years in Ballan and was part-time for a little over a year before that. I’ve signed on to continue working at Ballan Community Health for another five years.
I’ve been a doctor for 30 years. I’m a GP, but I’m one of the old-school ones. I was doing procedural obstetrics and general practice in New South Wales, and was there for about 11 years. The people were very nice to work with. What brought you to Ballan for work? I came to Ballan Community Health because of the facilities. I was aware through contacts and friends that it was one of the public Superclinics that seemed to work well. I wanted to know what it was like to be part of that. Tell me about what keeps you in Ballan. The community is why you stay in an area as a doctor. I’ve worked in a number of places and

and medicine is just one of them. I tend to keep my work and my interests very separate.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
What is the best thing about Moorabool?
Plenty! I have too many interests for one lifetime
I don’t fancy myself working in a city – I just don’t like the ethos. The people are different in
regional towns – the people are more attractive to deal with. I was familiar with this area from travelling here over many years, but working here has allowed me to get to know the people better. I’ve met some really interesting people, which makes working here great. That’s the best thing about this community.

Today, the band Queen is rock royalty but at the 1974 Sunbury rock festival, they were unknowns who were treated with contempt. Their glam outfits stood out among the jeans and T-shirts, and they were seen as foreign interlopers amid the wave of Aussie pub rock. A roadie for local band Madder Lake mooned Queen, and the crowd threw beer cans and shouted “go home you Pommie wankers”. The band belted out a powerhouse set, but it ended in tears with frontman Freddie Mercury throwing a tambourine at another jeering roadie, and announcing that Queen would be the world’s biggest band. Colourful yarns abound in a new book about the four Sunbury festivals, held from 1972 to 1975. In 1975, an irate AC/DC cancelled their set after the preceding act, British headliners Deep Purple, insisted they wait 30 minutes before taking the stage. And a teenage Jimmy Barnes ran away from his Adelaide home to camp at the festival. Sunbury was dubbed Australia’s Woodstock, but by 1972, rock was trumping the peace and love vibes. Up to 40,000 fans who camped on the natural amphitheatre on a farm at Diggers Rest (it wasn’t actually in Sunbury), each Australia Day long weekend, enjoyed 18 hours of music a day, including Skyhooks, Sherbet, Daddy Cool, and Chain. The book’s author, historian Peter Evans, who was lighting director at three of the festivals, and a spectator at the fourth, played a
part in founding it. In 1971 the then 21-year-old TV technician raved to his boss, Channel Nine lighting director John Fowler, about the Wallacia music festival, west of Sydney. When Fowler asked why you’d run such an event, Evans replied: “Fifteen thousand kids times five dollars”. Fowler saw the light and assembled a crack team to stage Sunbury, including soldier and solicitor Graeme Rees-Jones and film director John Dixon as site manager. Premier Henry Bolte and the Country Fire Authority were dead against it, but farmers George and Beryl Duncan offered their land. The 1975 festival was dubbed ‘Mudbury’ after it rained. Fowler claimed radio 3XY over-stated the rain and crowd numbers slumped to 15,000, compared to up to 40,000 in 1972. The organising company, Odessa Promotions, went bust, and the dream was over. But the book, called Sunbury: Australia’s Greatest Rock Festival, is an upbeat and affectionate account of a seminal event in our history. Evans says reports of nudity were exaggerated, and while there was marijuana and mandrax tablets, beer was more popular. For Evans, who went on to work for TV programs including Hey Hey It’s Saturday and The Sullivans, it was “a huge adventure”. “I was not just sitting in the audience. I had a part in it, and that made it really special”. The Age

FIRE ACTION WEEK THE RIGHT TIME TO PREPARE It’s your responsibility to be ready this summer. Prepare your property, fire plan and emergency kit now. The reasons are black and white.
1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and under branches of mature trees. 5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

Terence Kuipers, who manages the gym with wife Robin, is happy to explain. “Recently, enthusiastic powerlifters from our group, who attend one of the many free classes we run daily, competed in a novice powerlifting competition run by CAPO Powerlifting Australia,” says Terence, a record-holding powerlifter himself. “We were more than happy with the results.
Age is just a number ... we can help any member reach success in achieving goals “From the six lifters who competed, three received medals. Pauline Magri, at 67 years young, won first place in the masters, while William Penno won a first in the junior competition. And Alex Brown, who is only 12 years old, won an inspiration medal.” Terence asserts that the level of professionalism displayed by these athletes is second to none. “The athletes were well prepared for their first competition, all performing personal bests on the day,” he said. “Each is now in preparation for their first national comp in December. “Last week, we had the pleasure of seeing an extraordinary lady from our gym, Karen Ciantar, who, at 48 years of age, stood on the stage for the first time in an

A happy haven for mums-to-be P
regnancy is an exciting journey that can also be a daunting experience, particularly for first-time mothers. There are many questions that need answering and, sometimes, worries that need quelling. Djerriwarrh Health Services is pleased to announce the formation of its new Bacchus Marsh pregnancy support group, The Expectant Tribe. Devised and established by local mother of two Katherine Geurts, The Expectant Tribe provides a safe and welcoming space where expectant mothers are offered support, advice and friendship.
Ms Geurts – who sits on the Djerriwarrh Health Services’ Diversity and Consumer Advisory Committee and other maternity committees – suggested forming the group to offer local mothers increased support and friendship. “When I moved to the Bacchus Marsh area nine years ago, I saw a genuine need for a social pregnancy support group in the community,” she says. “It can be hard to make friends as an adult, and being pregnant adds another layer of challenge. “While there were established postnatal support groups in operation in the Bacchus Marsh and Melton area, I noticed there was

a distinct lack of structured support for pregnant women throughout the period of their pregnancy. “I hope the formation of The Expectant Tribe group will help fill this gap in local support services. I encourage all local mothers to come along and be part of our group.” A midwife from the Djerriwarrh Health Services Maternity team is in attendance at every meeting to offer advice and address topics that arise. The midwife’s presence
has helped create an extremely supportive environment for the women in attendance and has led to the formation of a powerful group dynamic and sense of togetherness. Guest speakers are regularly invited to share their experiences or areas of expertise with the group. In recent weeks, group meetings have focused on post-date or prolonged pregnancy, vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC), breastfeeding tips and parenting skills.
The Expectant Tribe meets weekly on Tuesday mornings from 10am-12.30pm at Lerderderg Library in Bacchus Marsh. No booking is needed – everyone is welcome. A family fun day in late October will coincide with meet-and-greet sessions with management and educators to show families who are considering the home-based day care option what sets VIP apart from conventional day care providers.
Food trucks, a jumping castle, a petting zoo and refreshments will be part of the festivities on Sunday, October 29, from 11am-2pm. Group owner Angela Buttigieg says she is proud of the business she has built, the most successful family day care outfit in Victoria. “We have experienced staff, experienced management and ensure we have enough staff to monitor and maintain the homes,” she says. “At the end of the day, we make sure our educators are really caring, organised and focused individuals, with a passion for children’s welfare and education.” Angela says she set up the open day so families can see how VIP manages the administrative and management side of the business and so families can meet the

hen David Lloyd arrived in Australia more than 38 years ago, he brought with him experience in the building and shed construction industries. He and his wife, Yvonne, didn’t take long to set up in business, manufacturing sheds. “We started making them in a rented section of a factory,” David says. “We had no space to display our different shed designs in those early days, so we took the sheds on the road. Every day we assembled and disassembled – hard work, early days and late nights. “But it paid off. Our customers loved our product and its quality, and word began to spread. We had the setbacks and challenges many small family businesses face, but we kept going – and now we’re about to open our fourth store.” Company Manager Owen, David’s son, takes up the story. “From the start, dad was passionate about quality and knew he could offer a superior product,” Owen says. “He fought to get his products out into the marketplace – possibly with the same determination he showed as a child with polio. “He’s the same today. We all are. Our whole team works hard to deliver on what we promise – a top-quality, well-designed product, and an honest, reliable and timely service. “We keep costs down because we cut out the middleman. American barns, garages and carports are available, as are timber and industrial sheds, aviaries, chook houses and cubbies. “Our Stores and Head Office are vibrant places,” Owen says.
“We’re close-knit and celebrate wins and find solutions to problems together.” “We all value seeing happy customers and everyone’s willing to lend them a hand – the same as we do for each other. “We also keep a focus on evolving, staying on track with the latest technology and keeping our reputation for customer satisfaction strong.”

Safety the hot tip for Cup weekend O
ver the Melbourne Cup long weekend, Victoria Police will be out in force for Operation Furlong, which will run from Friday, November 3, to Tuesday, November 7. Road policing advisor Michael Baulch says Operation Furlong will be conducted throughout Victoria by all operational police in all police areas during the five days, using all available personnel from local highway patrol units, general duties police members and other police units. Acting Senior Sergeant Baulch says it is anticipated large numbers of people will use Victorian roads during the holiday weekend. “People will often be driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions,” he says. “The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home.” Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes, which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug) Motorists are being requested to stay within speed limits, not to drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave mobile phones out of reach, wear seatbelt/child restraints and make sure they are well rested. Speed cameras will be used in known high-collision locations. “Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads,” Acting Senior Sergeant
Baulch says. “Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure they take at least a 15-minute break at least every two hours and not to drive if tired. “Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones.
All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma “All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.” RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings says it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face,” he says. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. “Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.” He is asking the community to report speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Waves of fun a big hit for Melton W
hen locals head down to Melton Waves Leisure Centre for a swim or fitness session this summer, they will find the community facility changed for the better. Melton Waves Centre Manager Daniel McShane says that Melton City Council’s Capital Works Program included the considerable and wide-ranging improvement works for the benefits of the community. “The main change rooms have spanking-new shower cubicles, with change-space seat and clothes hooks for each,” he says. “New floor and wall tiles, in fresh colours, also do their bit to enhance the user experience. “And the men’s change rooms, previously an open shared facility, have three new enclosed shower cubicles.” Work in the pool area has also been undertaken, including rust rectification; improvements to gardens surrounding the pool areas; plant and equipment upgrades; and refurbishment of showers and change rooms adjacent to the warm-water pool. Melton may be a hike from the beach, but Melton Waves brings the beach experience to town. “Our wave pool is designed for splashing in the shallows or riding the waves,” Daniel says. “It’s much safer than the real beach and there’s no sand! “We have seven swimming pools all up, including for toddlers and lap swimming, as well as a warm-water pool, which is
great for buoyancy and pain relief while exercising.” Swimming lessons for kids and adults are a major offering at the centre, as are the aqua aerobics held most days. The health gym and fitness club at Melton Waves is a state-of-the-art facility, with all the latest equipment. Group classes include high intensity and mind and body sessions and, with 35 fitness classes held each week, there’s plenty of fun and motivation to be had.
Our wave pool … is much safer than the real beach and there’s no sand Group fitness time tables are available on the website. Birthday parties are fuss-free and the ideal solution for busy parents. And there’s a creche for littlies to allow mum and/or dad to have their own gym or pool time. When families sign up for swimming and water safety lessons, the first one is free. Fitness memberships incur no joining fees or lock-in contracts and the first fortnight is free. Both offers end on October 31, 2017. Melton Waves Leisure Centre, 206 Coburns Road, Melton. Where cool cars are the main game W
hen your vehicle is your pride and joy, maintaining its good looks can assume extra importance. The owners of Auto Passion in Bacchus Marsh, Vince Bartolo and Julie Shedden, understand this, so they’ve become Opti-coat providers. Vince explains what this high-tech product can do. “Opti-coat, applied once to a vehicle’s duco, doesn’t degrade over time with UV and chemical exposure, like waxes and other sealants do,” he says.
It’s all part of our evolution into a one-stop panel shop. There’s not much we don’t do “It will save hours spent waxing and polishing, and also give the car owner peace of mind that their valuable asset is protected from the environment.” Forward-thinking Auto Passion now has yet another string to its bow – attending breakdowns and taking along Marshall batteries when called for. “It’s all part of our evolution into a one-stop panel shop,” Julie says. “There’s not much we don’t do – from car detailing to supplying, fitting and balancing tyres. We stock new tyres, with labels such as Austone, Minerva and Kenda, as well as a range of used tyres for the budget-conscious.” Vince and Julie share their passion for

We all do. Roof chops,
custom and candy painting, customising wheel hubs, building a chassis or a hot rod – all great, and done with flair and specialist knowledge and skills.” Julie says they give considerable time to keeping skills and knowledge updated, as well as keeping an eye on giving back to their community. “We sponsor our local football and lawn

SPORT Collective effort reels in the runs Melton has started its season in fine form with a strong first-up performance against Kew in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west division. After no play in week one of the game, due to play being called off with not enough pitches ready, both sides were looking to get their seasons under way on a winning note. After winning the toss, Melton chose to bowl and took two early wickets to have Kew at 2-46. The third wicket partnership of David Wildsmith and Christopher Weeks was the key for Kew. They put on 140 runs to take back control of the game. Once that stand was broken, the Lions picked up wickets to restrict Kew to 6-231. Brad Jones and Ash Sweet took two wickets
apiece, while Lions coach Nathan Geisler was impressed with the efforts of Dylan Clarke, who took one wicket. The Lions started well with the bat and all but one batsman scored double figures as the Lions easily chased down the runs. They finished on 7-232 with two overs to spare. Geisler, who didn’t play, said it was a good start to the season against a strong Kew outfit. “We chased it down pretty comfortably,” he said. “The top four all got starts and the guys who came through the middle backed them up. “The run rate was five all day and we stuck with it. “We were confident that if we got to bat the overs, we would chase down the total.” David Kirk top scored with 63, while Ben
MacRae, Anthony Gale and Nathan Taylor all scored 26 or above. The Lions will play their first home match this weekend when they take on Werribee. Werribee suffered a first-up loss at the hands of Preston. The Melton women’s side suffered a first-round loss in Victorian Premier Cricket seconds on Sunday. Chasing Ringwood’s 8-260, the Lions could make only 132. Meanwhile, the Lions are still looking for players for their all-abilities side. The team will play its first game on Sunday against St Johns at MacPherson Park. Anyone interested in playing should contact Kevin on 0408 356 850. Tara Murray
Lobb gets coaching job By Tara Murray Jamie Lobb will step into the coaching hot seat at Diggers Rest. Lobb, who has played at the Riddell District Football League club the past three years, was named the Burras senior coach on Wednesday last week. Lobb replaces Shaun Sims, who decided to stand down from the role after four seasons. “It all happened pretty quickly,” Lobb said. “I got a call from the club on the weekend and we sat down and had a chat. “Shaun was always up in the air [about continuing]. He felt it was time to take a year off and freshen up a bit.” Sims, who coached the side to four grand finals including last year’s premiership, will remain involved at the club. “He’ll still be around the club and he’ll play twos,” Lobb said. “The work he has done for his club has been massive. He knows the league inside out.” One of the Burras’ key players, Lobb will combine his on-field role and coaching. He said he always saw himself moving into coaching. He was a playing assistant coach at the Burras for the past three years. “It’s always been on the cards,” he said. “Diggers Rest is a good place to start.” Shane Bishop, who has also been assistant coach the past couple of years, will remain on board and provide Lobb with assistance. The Burras find themselves in an unusual position this off season – this year they didn’t make the grand final – the first time since 2012. The Burras were knocked out in the preliminary final by Rupertswood. Lobb said there was fire in the belly of the side after a season that didn’t live up to expectations. “Everyone felt disappointed with the way we finished things off,” he said. “We couldn’t string enough games together and we didn’t play well at the end of the year. “We battled away and lost a few games we shouldn’t have.” Lobb said he had started talking to the playing group about next season and signs were positive that the club would retain most, if not all, its list. “I’ve spoken to every senior player and 95 per cent are on board,” he said. “You always like to bring in a couple of players … we’ll sit down next week and work out who we want to get. “We’ve got a pretty tight playing group and it’s a good place to be.”

Girls ready for new season The Gisborne and District Cricket Association is expanding its Renegades Girls Cricket League competition this season. After running a program the past two seasons, with all players in the one competition and location, this season the association will run the program like its other competitions. Clubs will field their own teams, instead of players being put into teams, and will have home and away matches. Junior girls co-ordinator Angela Dempsey said the association was hoping to have three age groups, 11 and under, under-15s and under-18s, to give the girls the chance to develop against players their own age. They’ve only had interest to field teams in the lower two age groups. She said at this stage, they were planning four teams in each competition, but said ideally they would have six. Riddell, Woodend, Kyneton, Hanging Rock, Wallan and Bacchus Marsh are considering entering teams. Dempsey said having all the games in the one location had affected participating with some people from Bacchus Marsh, Wallan and other outer areas not prepared to travel every week. “This [new program] allows teams to develop a member base and makes it easier to campaign to get girls playing.” The competition will run for five weeks starting in November, before finishing the season next year. The under-15s will play finals. Games are all on Friday nights and this year the clubs will also hold training sessions for the girls. All clubs are still looking for players for this season. Struggle time for Darley bats Darley is in trouble against NapoleonsSebastopol in the Ballarat Cricket Association. After a delayed start to the day due to water on the pitch, the Lions had a nightmare time with the bat. Only Bradley Barnes looked comfortable as the Lions finished the day at 8-92. Barnes made 39, with Hayden Jamieson and Ben Longhurst the only other players to score double figures. The Lions still have gun allrounder Matt Cape in the sheds, after he missed the day’s play.

Melton plans a welcome return to Big V basketball Melton Thoroughbreds will have a women’s Big V team take to the court next season. After a lot of hard work behind the scenes, the side will return to the competition for the first time since 2010, due to lack of numbers. Lauren Olcorn, who captained the Thoroughbreds 2008 division 3 championship side, said she was excited to get a team back up and running. Olcorn has been a driving force in re establishing the team. She was appointed coach last week. “We’ve done everything possible to get the team up and going again,” she said. “There’s been so much support from the Melton Basketball Association and especially
from the committee. They think it’s the right time to have a team again. “The most pleasing thing is our junior girls, who aren’t ready for Big V just yet, will have something for them to enter when they are old enough. “We want to provide a pathway for them.” Olcorn said the club had spoken to prospective players to get their thoughts on whether they wanted to be involved. Many of those players are from Melton and have either stopped playing Big V or are playing elsewhere. “There’s been talk for a number of years about wanting to reform and we think now is a good time,” Olcorn said. “We’ve had at least 20
people expressing interest in being in the team. Behind the scenes we were talking to a lot of players. Seeing who wanted to return and who would want to come over to Melton. “There’s a core group of players who want to return. There’s a good group and a few juniors who will also be involved.” Among the players planning to return are 2008 championship players Gabby Eaton and Channy Paris-Webb. Natelee Eaton has signalled she will be back and Carissa Lock will be playing assistant coach. Younger players Emily Attard and Caitlyn Spence will have the chance to secure spots in the team. The side, which will play in division 2, will
also hold try-outs to attract other players. Olcorn, who has coached juniors at Melton and was an assistant coach with Big V club Collingwood All Stars this year, said the hard work was just beginning. “So far has been the ground level work. I’m very proud they’ve put faith in me to do the job,” Olcorn said. “We’ve returned to get the program back up and running and hopefully challenging in the next few years.” The Thoroughbreds are expected to announce their men’s and youth league men’s coaches in the coming weeks. Centrals miss their mark By Tara Murray There was no perfect start for Melton Centrals in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s west A1 competition with a first-up loss to Grand United. Hoping to start the season on a high against Grand United – last season’s minor premiers – Centrals couldn’t put the required runs on the board. Electing to bat, Centrals made 6-159 from its 40 overs. In response, Grand United hit the winning runs with four wickets in hand and continued to bat out its overs, finishing 6-189. David McDonald and Kieran Bensley took two wickets each for Centrals. Speaking before the match, Centrals captain-coach Adam Hulett said the club would field a similar side to last season. “Most of the playing group has returned and we’ve picked up a couple of players,” he said. “We’ve got a good group of mates who want to play together. “Aside from that, we’ll be looking to our under-17s, which is a good side. “We are looking to add players from that team to both our turf sides. Two or three of them played in the first and second XIs last season and we are looking to blood a few more.” Opening bowler Andrew Zenonos, who had been playing at Melton in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, has returned to the club having played his junior cricket there. Hulett said they were working towards being in the mix for a top-four spot again. Last season Centrals finished second, before being knocked out in the semi-finals. “Sometimes that is life and there wasn’t much more we could do,” he said. “We’ve always been consistent with the ball and in the field. At times our batting let us down, but that’s just cricket.” Centrals lower grades have had a change of competitions in the off season, moving from the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Hulett said the decision to move was based on making the teams more competitive. “Last season those teams were playing against some clubs’ first and second XI sides,” he said. “Being in the GDCA allows them to be more competitive. It’s a credit to these guys for sticking around.” Melton South started its season with a loss to Seabrook. The Royals made 9-156 from their overs and Graeme Bennett top scored with 49. Seabrook made the runs in the 36th over, with five wickets in hand. Matthew Kozole and James Robertson took two wickets apiece for the Royals. In north A1, Sydenham-Hillside claimed the points against Caroline Springs. Caroline Springs was bowled out for 147, with Declan Highgate taking four wickets for the Sharks. The Sharks finished 6-155, with all but one batsman getting starts.

Coach thrives on hard work Melton Football Club has looked within for it’s next senior coach by appointing Aaron Tymms. Tymms, who was an assistant coach with the club this year, replaces Brad Murphy. Murphy decided that after four years in the role that both the club and he needed a change. He has since signed with St Albans as its senior coach. Tymms was previously at the helm of Western Region Football League side Albion, standing down at the end of 2016. He coached that side for three years after taking on the role to help the club at which he played more than 400 games. Tymms said he was looking forward to putting his mark on the Melton side. “It’s going to take a lot of hard work to achieve our goals,” he said. “We can have all the talent in the world, but hard work defeats talent when talent fails to work hard.” Bloods football manager Brad Jamison said that Tymms brought a lot to the table throughout the interview process. “ Tymmsy already has a strong knowledge of our playing list, which will be beneficial as we ramp up our recruiting and contracting over the next few weeks,” Jamison said. “Throughout the interview process his passion and enthusiasm for our coaching role stood out and he presented some very strong ideas and plans for 2018 and beyond.” Bloods president Greg Davis said he thought Tymms was the best person to take the club to the next level. The Bloods finished ninth this season, one game outside the top six. It’s been more than 10 years since the Bloods have made finals. The club will announce assistant, reserves and under-18.5 coaches in coming weeks. Melton Centrals captain-coach Adam Hulett in action on Saturday. (Mark Wilson)

Wolves dream unravels By Tara Murray Melton Wolves hopes of a first premiership in Gridiron Victoria division 2 competition were dashed by the Northern Raiders on Saturday. In just their second season, the Wolves made it through to the division 2 grand final after finishing bottom last season. Playing in front of their home crowd, the Wolves took confidence into the game having knocked off the Raiders the last time the two teams met. In what turned out to be a low-scoring match, scores were locked at 0-0 at quarter-time. The Raiders were the first team to hit the scoreboard and had a 7-0 lead at half-time. The Wolves were desperate to score in the third quarter, but couldn’t find the openings they needed. The Raiders increased the lead to 10-0 and held it to the end. While the Wolves didn’t take out the grand final, they did secure some individual player and coaching honours. Wolves quarterback Matthew Krul was named the division 2 most valuable player. He was also named the offensive player of the year and named at quarterback in the team of the year. Krul juggles playing gridiron and football with Diggers Rest on weekends throughout most of the season. Trevor Tutaka was named defensive tackle in the division 2 team of the year. Wolves coach Tiff Lykee was named joint coach of the year, along with Monash Barbarians’ Daniel Sanderson. Western Raiders claimed the division 1 title with a 30-9 win against Melbourne Uni Royals.
Bulls batsmen steady to grab the points Bacchus Marsh has claimed first-innings points against Diggers Rest Bulla in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Coming off a strong win in the opening round, the Bulls continued their good form on day one of the two-day clash. The Bulls started well with the ball, having the Burras in trouble at 3-9 and then 6-38. The going was tough for the Burras, who were all out for 76. Just two players reached double figures, Blake Robinson top scoring with 31. Madushanka Ekanayaka took four wickets for the Bulls. The Bulls got off to a reasonable start with the bat and were 26 for no loss, but two quick wickets slowed them down. They steadied and were 2-81 at stumps. Skipper Ben Robertson was 36 not out along with James Lidgett on 12 not out. In B grade, St Anthonys will need to be on with the bat against Riddell on day two of their match. The Saints need 224 to claim the points. Eynesbury had a day out with the bat, making 7-394 against Ashfield in its match. Eagles skipper Hayden Castle scored 186. Wallan recorded the highest score of the round, making 8-483 against Bacchus Marsh. Tara Murray

Subaru puts in the X Factor By Vani Naidoo, Marque Motoring The Subaru XV has been a surprising charmer for the Japanese manufacturer, its distinctive looks and inherent sense of fun creating interest in a whole new demographic. The latest version of the compact Subaru SUV aligns closely under the skin to the Subaru Impreza hatch and is looking to further improve Subaru’s growing market share in this segment. Offered in four variants with price-drops across the range, the XV starts at $27,990, and boasts a handy list of standard features. It challenges the Mazda CX-3, Nissan Qashqai, Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR and we feel has the firepower to stay the course. It’s the only model in this class with permanent all-wheel-drive. Sunshine orange stitching, brushed metal highlights and a sleek, sculpted dash sets the tone for the interior of the new Subaru XV. It feels spacious and light and an easy, comfortable place to be in. An 8.0-inch colour infotainment screen and second smaller display grab the eye in a console that shows clear thought has been given to both layout and integrated design. Maybe not as funky as you would envisage for a car with the millennials in its focus, but with enough spirit to interest. Subaru has upped it standard features across the XV range while dropping the price. The top shelf 2.0i-S ($300 cheaper at $35,240) comes with all manner of goodies including leather trim, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, steering-responsive LED headlights, 18-inch alloys, electric sunroof, sat-nav, reverse camera and an enviable safety package. On the outside the Subaru XV remains striking and not easily forgotten. It is a mix of

The 8.0-inch colour touchscreen in the 2.0i-S we tested is uncomplicated and easy to use with crisp picture and good graphics. There is sat-nav via TomTom with three years of map updates. Bluetooth connectivity is a cinch, although voice recognition can be iffy, and the system also pairs easily with Apple CarPlay and

All four variants in the range are powered by the same 2.0-litre horizontally-opposed naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT automatic. The combination is good for a restrained 115kW of power and 196Nm of torque. Only the entry-level XV misses out on

Subaru’s impressive EyeSight system. For the uninitiated, it is a camera-based safety system that uses brake light recognition as the basis for a long list of driver-aid features. This includes things like autonomous emergency braking, brake assist, rear cross traffic alert, reverse automatic braking as well adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist. Vision Assist switches from high to low beam when it detects oncoming headlights. The XV also has six airbags, front seat-belt pre-tensioners with load limiters and the usual stability and traction control for a five star ANCAP rating. For the driver and the front passenger there is room that belies the nature of a compact SUV. The back seat copes well with two tallish adults, the higher middle perch and transmission tunnel making it harder to turn that two into three. The Subaru XV has the technical savvy to entice a younger generation and the space and ease of use to satisfy older drivers while its off-road ability adds another string to a well-weighted bow.

Car essentials to keep you safely on the move No matter how many bells and whistles your car has – or doesn’t have – there are four key maintenance jobs that, according to the experts, shouldn’t be ignored if you want the vehicle to stay in good nick and keep you safe on the road. 1. Brake pads Many factors determine how quickly brake pads wear out, from driving style and traffic conditions faced regularly (eg, stop-start-stop) to a vehicle’s weight. There’s no specific timespan for brake pad wear, but if you hear a slight screech or scraping sound, pay serious attention. Once it turns into a rough grinding sound, it’s time to replace brake pads – immediately. Your safety, let alone your wallet, will be in danger otherwise. 2. Oil change Most modern vehicles require an oil change every 8000 to 16,000 kilometres. Check your manual for specific requirements for your particular car. Over time, oil can become contaminated, reducing effectiveness. Engine heat breaks down oil, so lubrication is lessened and parts wear out faster. 3. Air filter This needs a change about every 12,000 kilometres, perhaps more often if you often drive on dusty roads. A clogged air filter can reduce mileage and horsepower and even cause engines to “run rough” and stall. 4. Tyres Life expectancy of tyres is variable, but most are rated for between 65,000 to 80,000 kilometres. Check monthly between the treads for the ridges in between, which should – legally and for safety – be 1.5mm high. Once the tread is equal with these 1.5mm ridges, it’s definitely time for new tyres. Professionals say that while there are plenty of car parts that will need maintenance at some point, if you keep on top of these four things, it will keep your car on the road and safe for much longer than you might expect.
