Staughton College students had time to shine at their annual arts and technology showcase last week. The school’s exhibition included artwork, media, visual communication and design, music, theatre, food technology, woodwork and construction projects from years 7 to 12 students. Year 11 student Monique Buttigieg (pictured) was among those who showed off their creations at the October 24 event. Media teacher Shelley Eckel said it was a time to highlight the students’ work. “We were celebrating the amazing work our talented students have done throughout the year,” Ms Eckel said. “Students, parents, staff and the community were invited to the official opening which was on Tuesday night where people were greeted with live music, delicious food and an array of artwork and films. “Visitors were wowed by the effort and creativity of our junior, middle years and senior students. We can’t wait to see the amazing work they produce in the next few years.” Esther Lauaki
Heat is on pool policy By Esther Lauaki Moorabool council’s temperature-based policy that dictates the opening hours of its two outdoor pools has re-ignited calls for an indoor aquatic centre for the region. Residents expressed their frustrations online at the sporadic timetable for the Bacchus Marsh and Ballan pools, which was released by the council last week. Some described the opening hours as a “waste of a pool” while others said they were happy to travel out of town if it meant more time to swim. “It really sucks that my kids can’t enjoy the Bacchus Marsh pool like I did as a kid,”
one person commented on a Bacchus Marsh residents Facebook page. “Going there every day of the school holidays, getting hot chips from Grant St fish ‘n’ chips and staying there from the time they opened until the time they closed. Unfortunately, this [the policy] just sends business out of Bacchus Marsh.” “What a waste of a pool and [it’s] never open,” another resident posted. “We need an indoor pool.” Funding an indoor swimming pool in Bacchus Marsh has been a long-running issue for residents. Plans for a multi-million dollar facility hit a wall when state funding was announced and then scrapped in 2013.
Now residents are again floating the idea. Balliang resident Rosa told Star Weekly she drove to Geelong to use an indoor pool there because the hours were more suitable. “We need an indoor pool to open for longer for people who want to swim and maintain their fitness,” she said. “It’s something that our community has wanted for a long time, but [it] has never happened.” Council’s temperature-based policy, introduced in 2015, dictates the opening hours of the two pools throughout summer, which open on December 2. According to the policy, they will open when the temperature reaches 23°C. Throughout
December and February, they will be open for three hours only, from 3-6pm on weekdays and 1-4pm on weekends – if the temperature is between 23°C and 25°C. On days of more than 26°C, they will be open for eight hours, from 11am to 7pm. In January, opening hours of 11am to 7pm will apply on days above 23°C. Belgravia Leisure managed and operated the council-owned Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre and the Bacchus Marsh and Ballan outdoor pools for the past decade until June, when councillors agreed to take over operations. Moorabool council was contacted for comment, but did not reply before deadline.

Affordability the ‘greatest asset’ By Esther Lauaki Melton remains one of Melbourne’s most affordable pockets to buy into, with median house prices just tipping $400,000. Latest Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) data showed the median house price in Melton West was $425,000 for the year to September 30 – topping the 10 most affordable suburbs in the state. Jason Ryder, of Ryder Professional in Melton, said the performance of the housing market across the municipality in recent months was still “rising”.
But he said that home buyers could still pick up a three or four bedroom home for under $400,000, which was a rarity in other parts of the state. “Affordability is still our greatest asset in Melton,” Mr Ryder said. “We had an auction at a property in Melton West and about 30 people showed up, there were four bidders and the property sold for $375,000. “There are definitely still houses that can be purchased out here that are below $400,000.” Mr Ryder said the area’s long-held reputation for affordable housing was primarily because
of its location – about 23 kilometres from Melbourne’s city business district. “We’re seeing that houses that were $300,000 are selling for close to $400,000 and houses that were $400,000 are selling for a lot more,” he said. He said vendors still had the upper hand in the Melton housing market. “Sellers are definitely achieving good prices for their properties,” Mr Ryder said. “There is a lot of competition out there and in this market, if you’re trying to penny pinch, you might miss out. As more property becomes available we’re hoping that this might change.”
REIV acting president Richard Simpson said that despite Melton West’s 14.1 per cent growth at the beginning of this year, property in the area was still priced well below the metropolitan median of $817,000 (up 0.7 per cent this quarter). Mr Simpson said the growth in Melton West’s property market was the result of population increases, record low interest rates and strong buyer demand. “It’s certainly a sellers’ market at present with strong competition for homes … particularly in Melbourne’s more affordable areas,” he said.

Government warns against snake killing

Festival fun bears fruit The Strawberries and Cherries Weekend at Bacchus Marsh is all set to produce a bumper crop of fun next month. The three-day festival will start on November 17, and organisers are confident attendance will mirror the 17,000 visitors who turned out last year. Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association secretary Glenda Jones said the “first fruits of spring” weekend was hugely important for tourism in the region.
“It’s not just for the weekend,” she said. “People who visit for the festival enjoy it so much that they come back and some even stay for much longer. “We’re so lucky to live in such a beautiful place – just far enough out of the city but with access to everything.” She said the festival was for tourists – and residents, too. “The fruit’s looking good and there’s plenty of sunshine around for this time of year, so
we welcome everyone to come and enjoy the festival,” she said. The weekend celebrates the arrival of the first spring crops, with fresh produce available for purchase along with “pick your own” options. Other highlights will include a local produce trail, market stalls, a makers market and the Creswick Light Horse Brigade. Details: bit. ly/2zJR33Y Esther Lauaki
The state government has warned that residents who intentionally kill snakes will be investigated. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has received a number of reports this spring of people killing snakes that posed no threat to their safety. Department resource protection manager Emily Davies said snakes played an important role in the ecosystem and it was illegal to capture, harm or kill them. “Reports of people wilfully destroying protected wildlife will be investigated accordingly,” she said. “Most snake bites are received by people who try to capture or kill a snake. “Snakes usually prefer to retreat when encountered, but can become defensive if threatened. “Being aware that snakes may be around and being informed about how to react to them are the most important aspects of managing snakes.” Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. Ms Davies said residents should understand that snakes presented little or no danger to people when left alone. She recommended that house owners maintain lawns and clean up properties, as snakes were attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal and building materials. Esther Lauaki

Jobs tactic to fight crime By Esther Lauaki Victoria Police is throwing its support behind young people in the west as part of its campaign to steer them away from crime and into employment. The Youth Umbrella Project, based in Brimbank, is being held up as one of the local success stories in helping police reach young people. Run by Youth Junction, the umbrella project supports vulnerable and disadvantaged young people aged between 12 and 24 who have had contact with the justice system or are at high risk of doing so. Youth Junction chief executive Karen Hart said the project works with young people to create pathways away from crime. Youth Umbrella participants are offered assistance with legal counselling, education, living skills, narrative therapy, music production, cooking, barista and hospitality training, respectful relationships, indoor football and after-school homework programs. The project, funded by the state government’s Community Crime Prevention Program, will be discussed at the Police Chief Commissioner’s Youth Summit in Melbourne tomorrow (November 1). Chief commissioner Graham Ashton said protecting young people from criminal involvement was not something police could do alone. “In last year’s summit, we heard loud and clear the challenges that some young people face when trying to access the job market,” he said. He said a shortage of jobs with good prospects and lack of access to training and education meant some young people considered street

life more appealing than the regular working world. This year’s summit will bring together about 200 leaders from industry, community organisations, government and non-government agencies, as well as young people. “We want to invest in our youth, support them in finding jobs they are passionate about and give them the opportunity to get experience
early, in turn reducing the risk of them entering the justice system,” Mr Ashton said. “The more we can keep youth people engaged in education or employment and connected to community, the better their life outcomes will be.” The Chief Commissioner’s Youth Summit will be held at the MCG between 9am and 1.10pm on Wednesday, November 1.

Extra comfort for commuters Bacchus Marsh train passengers will have more room thanks to three new V/Locity carriages for a weekday service. The 5.35pm train from Southern Cross Station to Bacchus Marsh will have the additional carriages. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said that capacity had been doubled on the busy service to reduce crowding and get more passengers home from work, school or a day out. “We’re doubling the number of seats on the train to reduce crowding and carry more passengers on this busy evening service,” Ms Kairouz said. “The extra carriages will make the journey home more comfortable for local passengers. “Passengers getting on these trains in Deer Park and Caroline Springs can look forward to having more room on the way to Bacchus Marsh.” Last week’s announcement comes as 27 new V/Locity carriages have been added to the network in the past year. The carriages have been added to services on the busiest lines across the network, including the major commuter corridors of the Bendigo, Traralgon, Geelong and Ballarat lines. The 2017-18 Victorian budget included $311.1 million for 39 new V/Locity carriages, on top of the 48 already ordered that continue to roll off the production line. Esther Lauaki

Regan Tamanui with his stencil at the Taylors Hill Youth and Community Centre. (Marco De Luca)
Street art springs to life Street and stencil artist HAHA is bringing his art and ideas to Melton. Those keen to unleash their inner creativity joined HAHA – aka Regan Tamanui – at Raglans Cottage last week for workshops. The Melbourne-based artist will launch his 700 CUTS exhibition on November 10 at CS Gallery in Caroline Springs. The works highlight HAHA’s investigations of fame, culture and experiments in “colliding identities”. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey is excited about the artist exhibiting his work in Caroline Springs. “Art comes in all shapes, sizes and colours, and HAHA’s work exemplifies a modern art
form popular with young people,” Cr Ramsey said. “Having one of Australia’s top street artists showing their work in the city will hopefully inspire other young people to give stencil art a go. “This exhibition forms part of a whole season of street art events aimed at developing positive connections between local community, young people, art and urban spaces.” The 700 CUTS art exhibition will open on Friday, November 10, from 3.30pm at 193-201 Caroline Springs Boulevard, Caroline Springs. Time to work on fire prevention By Charlene Macaulay Summer is almost here, and with it comes the threat of grass fire and bushfires. Parks Victoria is doing its utmost to reduce the risk of fire with its annual fire prevention program, which includes works across Brimbank Park, Lower Maribyrnong Valley Parklands, Organ Pipes National Park, Point Cook Coastal Park, Woodlands Historic Park, and grasslands and nature conservation reserves in Derrimut, Craigieburn, Laverton,
and Ravenhall. Staff will be cutting grass, reducing vegetation growth along park boundaries, and maintaining access roads for firefighting vehicles to reduce the likelihood of fires starting and spreading in parkland. They will also maintain nearly 870 kilometres of fire breaks – gaps in vegetation that help stop or control the spread of fire. The work is carried out each year in the lead-up to the summer fire season and complements planned burns carried out as part of the Forest Fire Management Victoria program.

Greg Hitch from Parks Victoria said residents living next to parks can do their bit by maintaining their properties and keeping grass cut, clearing gutters, pruning shrubs and trees, and removing rubbish and weeds from around the home.
“Our work is essential in helping to protect communities who live close to our parks,” Mr Hitch said. “Reducing grass and vegetation growth will not on its own stop fires from starting, but will allow us to better manage a fire. “Our work is becoming more important with new housing estates constructed in former paddocks and grasslands each year in Melbourne’s west.” For a full list of the fire prevention works sites, go to bit.ly/2g9syVc
House fire under investigation A fire that gutted an abandoned Melton West house last week is being treated as suspicious. Firefighters were called to the Harkness Road property at 11.55pm last Monday and found the house engulfed in flames. At least 15 Country Fire Authority vehicles turned out to the blaze which was contained and under control just after midnight. The abandoned house was on about 20 hectares of grassland. Records show that the property was last sold in 2011. Melton police told Star Weekly that the cause of the fire is still unknown. They would not speculate on whether it was an arson attack. They could not confirm whether the property had been occupied by squatters before the fire. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Esther Lauaki

A cricketer with drive This big hitter is looking to make his mark on the Victorian cricket scene. Eynesbury cricketer Cayden, 12, has been selected for the Victorian under-12 School Sports squad to play in a national carnival at Cobram in January. He trialled for the squad in June and was excited to have made the cut, proud dad Jim Herlihy told Star Weekly. Mr Herlihy, who is president of Eynesbury Cricket Club, said Cayden’s passion for the sport shone through from his early years. “His first year of cricket was 2014,” Mr Herlihy said. “People have asked me if I’m worried that Cayden will get burnt out, but I know that he loves it. If it’s daylight outside, he’s out in the
backyard with the cricket nets practising every single school morning.” Cayden trains six days a week with the club’s under-14, under-15 and senior teams. His dad said that he hoped Cayden’s success would pave the way for other Melton cricketers. “It’s tough for Melton clubs to play at that level for various reasons,” Mr Herlihy said. “Hopefully, Cricket Victoria will start looking out here more for talent because there are some fantastic players. “Part of me thinks Cayden deserves to be in the state team because of how hard he works, and part of me is sad for other great players out here.” Esther Lauaki

New voice for violence victims By Tate Papworth After sharing her experience as a victim of violence, Brimbank deputy mayor Georgina Papafotiou was flooded with calls of support. That support was so strong that it’s acted as a catalyst to form a local group devoted to helping victims. Cr Papafotiou said while the group is still in its formative stages, it will have an open-door policy for all victims of violence. “As a victim of violence I’ve had a lot of doors shut for me because I didn’t fit under
the umbrella of domestic violence,” she said. “It didn’t matter what I said or did, all service providers closed the door on me. We want to be a group that opens those doors for all victims.” The group will also make it a high priority to bring about a change to the laws surrounding intervention orders and call for tougher penalties for repeat offenders. “We’ll be demanding legislative change in three particular areas,” Cr Papafotiou said. “A change in intervention orders, the way in which repeat offenders are dealt with and harsher penalties on these IVOs.”
Cr Papafotiou and two fellow councillors met with a small group of people last week to discuss the future direction of the group. It will be a community group not officially affiliated with the council. However, Cr Bruce Lancashire said it would be able to work in-hand with the council to lobby for change. “We [the council] have very good relationships with all of the politicians and government departments within our area, so our ability to advocate for changes to legislation is one of the key things we can do.”
Cr Papafotiou hopes the group will be up and running by year’s end but said it will need some help. “We’re starting with basics, so we need some people with a legal or IT background to do some pro bono work for a couple of hours a week during the first few months,” she said. “We need assistance naming the group, getting it registered, creating a website, establishing an online presence and emails – all the basics.” For all inquiries contact Cr Papafotiou on 0429 727 192.
A rock star at work The resurrection of a dying art is happening in Moorabool through a series of workshops at Spargo Creek. Stonemason and sculptor Josh Bowes will be running dry stone wall, stone lettering and relief carving classes at the Oak and Monkey Puzzle from November 18. Bowes, whose artist name is Drystone Jackson, is self taught in the art of dry stone, which developed out of necessity when farmers had to clear their land of dry stone. Throughout his career, Bowes has merged his love of, and skill, working with stone and his diverse art practice. Oak and Monkey Puzzle owner Natasha Morgan said Bowes’ experience and artistry brought a fresh perspective to the rare craft. “We’ve been running the workshops for a year and a half and they’re hugely popular,” she said.
“These are dying trades. Lettering now is done by stencils and sandblasters, whereas with Josh the pieces that are created at the workshop are all done by hand. “Josh grew up in this area and we work with reclaimed stone from the gold rush era in the 1800s. He provides a unique perspective to his multi-disciplinary craft, to which he is passionately fixated and generously shares with workshop participants.” Details: www.natashamorgan.com.au/ workshops-and-events Esther Lauaki

What is the best thing about living in Melton? I have great neighbours. Living in Melton gives you the benefits of city living as it is in such close proximity to Melbourne CBD – but you’re still far enough to not get caught in the traffic! Melton also has exceptional facilities. Melton library is a fantastic, free facility with great resources and services for all ages. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? Melton should have its own hospital and, ideally, its own court.

Home safety a call away Police and community volunteers are encouraging Melton residents to list their details on safety registers. All residents can place their information on the Community Safety Register, which is suited to older people or people with disabilities who are isolated, live alone or live away from friends and family. The free service has no age requirements. Melton Senior-Sergeant Simon Payne said the register was designed to make people feel safer knowing that police and volunteers were available if needed. “It’s for peace of mind,” he said. “In the past few years we’ve seen numbers drop off on the community safety register and we’d like people to know that they can register their details and • Tents

someone can give them a weekly call to check up on them, or even pay them a visit if they need help.” The service also helps to connect people with community groups, services and activities. The Melton Home Safely program is a separate register for seniors in which volunteers regularly visit residents in their homes. For both registers, personal information is treated with respect and is kept on a secure database at Melton police station. Only designated police and register co-ordinators can access the database and all volunteers are subject to police probity checks. To join the registers, phone 9747 7909.

Here is a special property that was built to be grand – and still is. Set across two blocks in the heart of Melton, and on a sprawling 1176 squares (approximately), this is a forever home waiting for new owners to make it their own. The main bedroom is carpeted and has feature wall detail, high ceilings, a walk-in robe and en suite. Five further carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes illustrate how big this single level house really is. A carpeted sitting room and large open-plan family room are all big on space and a sense of luxury. The kitchen has a walk-in pantry, oven, separate grill and loads of storage. Outside attractions include a louvred roof atop the outdoor entertaining zone, a gazebo and beautifully landscaped gardens. Other features include ducted heating, ducted vacuum, ceiling fans, sprinkler systems and a 4500-litre water tank.
Located in a quiet part of Brookfield, this large family residence enjoys a wide street frontage and sits on a block of about 648 squares. The front sitting room, currently being used as a dining room, is carpeted and has a feature bay window. Four carpeted and fitted bedrooms include the main with an en suite and walk-in robe. The main kitchen, meals and lounge area is of a great size. The kitchen has a wall oven, gas cook top, dishwasher and ample cupboard space. Entertain outside with a user-friendly alfresco area with pergola. Relax and look out to established gardens, including a vegie patch. With ducted heating, evaporative cooling and a double garage with rear access, this house has everything a family needs – and a few of those extras that can help make a house a home.

Looking for a large family property on a big block close to everything? Put this one on your list. On about 880 square metres and with wide frontage, the house’s layout is generous and relaxing. Updates include carpeting in the bedrooms, floorboards, fan lights and a modernised kitchen with double oven and two-drawer dishwasher. Both bathrooms (en suite and main) have also been revamped. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe; the other two bedrooms have built-in robes. Ducted heating, contemporary window dressings and a contemporary colour palette all help to further enhance the house’s appeal. A deep undercover back deck, bungalow with power, secure backyard and three-phase power to the double carport all point to this property being an excellent opportunity.
Perfect for a family, this modern build is low on maintenance and has great outdoor spaces. The carpeted main bedroom has two-way access to the main bathroom and a walk-in robe. Two further carpeted and well-lit bedrooms have walk-in robes. Open-plan living includes a comfortable lounge room and separate meals area. Ducted gas heating and a split-system are great inclusions. Outside will be a popular spot throughout the summer, with an inviting decked pergola and a lawn area for the kids to run on. This terrific package includes a single garage with internal access.

This high and handsome place, opposite a leafy creek reserve, is designed for maximum punch in the design stakes. It has strong architectural lines, with soaring double-height ceilings delivering a striking contemporary feel, and an airiness underscored by a palette of greys and white. It’s all anchored by oversized pale floating floorboards, grey carpets, and designer roller blinds patterned in charcoal and white dressing windows. The floorboards begin in the entry hall, to the left of which is a carpeted bedroom (or another living room) with a nook of storage

shelves. A large powder room is next door, and then comes a fab carpeted lounge room with grey-green highlight wall and others rising spectacularly to double height. The same towering ceiling in the neighbouring kitchen and meals area creates an extraordinary sense of light and space, while a carpeted theatre room (with split-system) through double doors is a more intimate space for family movie nights. A massive island bench in grey stone is the kitchen focal point, while the amount of seamless storage in white cabinetry is exemplary. Splashbacks in pearl-grey glass,
an Ariston dishwasher and Westinghouse 900mm cooker are other notable features. Tasmanian oak stairs ascend to a mezzanine landing with study area and walk-in closet. Around this are four large fitted bedrooms, each with ceiling fan as well as a glossy main bathroom. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe and a grey and white en suite with raised bowl-basin. The meals area has a glass sliding door to a slightly elevated deck under a large shade sail, around which are expanses of grey-coloured concrete. There’s a good stretch of lawn for kids’

play, lilly pillies screen the fence and a vegie box is down the side. A fenced concrete area houses a shed and there’s potential side gate access to this handy space for trailer/van parking. The property has ducted heating and cooling and a remote-controlled double garage with internal access. A shopping strip, anchored by Foodworks, is just down the road, as is Arnolds Creek Reserve. Moving house? Take the right mindset with you Anyone who has moved house will have no argument with its inclusion in the top-10 list of stressful life events. In fact, it sits just one peg lower than losing your job. Unless you’re a masochist or stress-lovin’ freak, no one – that’s no one – relishes the idea of all the hassle involved in packing up a life and moving out. But amid all that angst and effort, there are some benefits you might not have considered. Here are four to think upon: 1. Just like snakes, we sometimes need to shed dead skin to reveal a fresh way of gliding into our new address. It’s a time to get rid of dead weight, such as the hooley-dooley exercise bike we never use; the collection of frogs we treasured back in the day; the bread-maker we imagined producing loaves of sourdough goodness … you get the drift. Get practical and ruthless: it’s time for the Great Declutter we’ve always wanted. Keep only what still reflects who you really are.
3. Moving can sometimes mean leaving old acquaintances behind which, while sad, also gives you a chance to make new ones. People often complain about boredom with their ‘known world’, so moving into the unknown can galvanise you. Treat the move like a teenage crush, look anew for the good
(iStock)
2. One of the upsides to moving is that it takes you out of your comfort zone. Even moving away from your fave cafe and shops is a challenge, but a good one. It can force you to make new neighbourhood connections, negotiate new friendships at the school pick-up gate, discover new cultural mores. Evelyn Waugh once said: “Change is the only evidence of life.”
in people, view it as a new slate upon which to write a fresh future. 4. The chance for a mental reset is probably the greatest benefit of all. Clearing
out the old home’s detritus, stepping out of your comfort zone and connecting with new people and places all work to reset a complacent or tired mind. Actually moving is one huge pain in the backside – but what
you might not realise is that you’re giving your mind a chance to start over, expand and play with fresh thinking. Carole Levy

43 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 31, 2017
SPORT Wickets fall on slow field By Tara Murray It was wickets galore when Diggers Rest Bulla and Riddell went head-to-head in a Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup match on Saturday. Fourteen wickets fell on the opening day of play, leaving the match evenly poised. The Burras were in trouble early at 4-18, before a middle order fightback pushed them to 4-59. But wickets then fell frequently and the Burras were bowled out for 98. Playing coach Rasika Batepola top-scored for the Burras with 42. He said 98 was a better score than what it was looking like earlier in the match. “We lost the toss and the grass was long so we were slow getting going,” he said. “Our top order is yet to find form and have had low scores. We’ve had some players out … our top order will get stronger. “We need them to make sure they’re batting 10 to 15 overs to take the shine off the ball, but they haven’t done it yet. With a slow outfield the score of 98 is more like a 140-150 target.” Matthew Livingstone continued his hot form for Riddell taking 4-18. The Burras got off to the best possible start with the ball, having Riddell in trouble at 4-27. Darren Quarrell and Batepola have two wickets each for the Burras. Batepola said despite defending less than 100 he thought they were a good chance to win. Riddell danger man Mick Allen is still in the sheds for the Bombers. “In the opening round we played the premiers of the last two seasons and we made 106 and beat them,” Batepola said. “We need to take two or three early wickets and put the pressure back on them.” Batepola, who is new to the competition, said he was adjusting to playing with the Burras. There was plenty of other wickets in the other McIntyre Cup matches as well, with both sides batting on day one in four of the five matches. Rupertswood made 139 against Bacchus Marsh in their match. The Bulls will resume at 0-4. Sunbury United will resume at 3-33 against Lancefield, which made 189. Sunbury lost early wickets against Woodend and will resume at 4-50, chasing Woodend’s 169. Gisborne was the only side to bat out the day, making 5-306 against Romsey. Jakson Knight finished 150 not out. In B-grade, there was three standouts – Bacchus Marsh’s Chris Amphlett made 132; Eynesbury’s Luke Castle made 101; and St Anthonys Nathan Dantonio made a second straight century, this time 188 not out.
Watson takes on new role Melton South has appointed AFL Goldfields netball coach of the year Alan Watson as its A-grade coach for next season. Watson joins the Panthers, having coached Lancefield in the Riddell District Netball League for four years. He originally planned to continue with Lancefield, but a change in circumstances prompted him to change clubs. He took the Tigers to the RDNL grand final this year, which they lost to Romsey. Watson said he was excited by the new challenge ahead at the Panthers and in the Ballarat Netball League. The Panthers finished ninth with three wins this year. “I want to build a new culture, a winning culture,” he said. “I want to teach the young players at the club some new things and help build something. I met with the club and they were quite good and I felt comfortable with them.” Watson won’t be alone in joining the Panthers, with several Lancefield players also planning to make the move. Watson said he was expecting eight or nine players, including some A-grade players, to come across. Former Panthers star Andrea Tai is set to return as well. Tai was planning to head to Lancefield with Watson before he changed clubs. Watson said he was excited for Tai to join an exciting young shooting group, which includes Rhys Carter-Coleman and Tukapua and Tahnysha Salanoa. Watson said initial reaction to his appointment had been positive and he hoped several former players will return to the club. “It won’t happen overnight, but I want to build the club up and attract new players,” he said. “There’s a number of younger players coming through and, like I did at Lancefield, I want to give them a taste of senior netball and promote them through. “We’ll be playing in a different league and it will be a good challenge.” The Panthers are holding trials for all grades on Thursday between 6-8.30pm at Melton Recreation Reserve. For more information, contact Donna on 0412 303 766 or Mel on 0411 425 125. Tara Murray

Key signings bolster Darley’s chances Darley isn’t resting on its laurels, with the reigning Ballarat Football League premiers revealing three key signings early in the off season. Having claimed both the senior and reserves premierships this year, the Devils have quickly reinforced their playing group with some frontline players. Two BFL Henderson medalists and Devils premiership players headline the signings. Steven Kennedy, a dual best and fairest winner at the Devils, returns to the club from Altona this year and will strengthen the Devils midfield. Jake Edwards, who was part of the 2015 premiership, returns after playing VFL with Geelong. Coach Heath Scotland said it was fantastic to get Kennedy back to the club. Kennedy claimed the Western Region Football League division 1 best and fairest this year. 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 31, 2017
“He was a really big loss last year for us. He loves Darley and it was a tough call for him last season,” he said. “We’ve been speaking to him throughout the year and we were confident that we could get him back. “He came to a few of our games and he missed the atmosphere of Darley.” Kennedy will be a playing assistant coach and will look after the forward line. Scotland said Kennedy had so much to offer the playing group. Edwards announced his retirement from VFL level this year. Scotland said Edwards had plenty of clubs seeking his signature but he decided to return to the Devils. “He had some great offers,” Scotland said. “He wanted to come back and play with the club he loves. He’s excited about joining Darley again. Jake can play either end of the ground and can play midfield as well.”
Former VFL player Dylan Reid comes to the club from the Essendon District Football League. Scotland said Reid would add flexibility to the side, with the ability to play in the ruck or as a key forward. With those three key signings sealed, Scotland said the club would likely be a bit quieter for the rest of the off season. “We’re pretty much locked and loaded,” he said. “We might be able to fit in a couple more players if they come to us, but we targeted three areas and have filled those spots.” Scotland said they were expecting most of the playing group to remain. Drew Edwards has retired, joining Scotland who announced his playing days were over after the premiership win. Tara Murray

Titans prepared for challenging season ahead North Western Titans know the Baseball Victoria summer league men’s division 3 season will be full of challenges – and on Sunday, they faced their biggest yet. Promoted from division 4, the Titans started the season with two wins and a loss and were showing encouraging signs. But on Sunday, they proved no match for Pakenham, losing 16-2. Speaking before the game, coach Danny Haymes said the season was always going to be about getting the club up and going at this level, which is a big step up. “Results are great, but the main focus is get our name out there,” he said.
“The focus is on next year. This year is more to see what we can do and trying to be competitive. “Some players haven’t played for a while and face a learning curve on what we need to do. “From what I’ve seen, there’s not a lot different between us and the top sides. We just need to recruit a few players, as most sides have imports.” Haymes, who is in his first year of coaching the seniors, was behind the move from division 4 to division 3. Having come from a baseball background in Sydney that included coaching representative sides, he wanted to help the club go to the next level.
“I was coaching my son last season in the under-12 team and took them to the premiership,” he said. “They wanted me to coach the whole club … I said if they wanted me, we had to change a few things. “We had to go from playing fourth division to third division and be more professional.” Haymes, who is out injured with a broken hand, said numbers continue to grow and when everyone is available, the club would have enough players for three senior teams. Currently, they are fielding senior and reserves teams. “This season, we had eight new players who
Melton limps over line By Tara Murray After a bumpy start, Melton found its groove with the bat to seal its second win of the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association north-west season. With day one a day for the bowlers, the Lions batsmen had to get stuck in against Werribee to ensure a win at MacPherson Park. Resuming at 2-20, needing 114 for the win, the Lions got off to the worst start, losing the overnight batsmen Dylan Clarke and David Kirk cheaply to be in trouble at 4-32. The Lions regrouped and the middle and late order got them to the target eight wickets down. The Lions batted on, before being bowled out for 155. Lions coach Nathan Geisler said they can’t complain about the result, even if it wasn’t smooth sailing. “We limped there,” he said. “It’s always hard chasing small totals and you can sometimes over-think it. Nathan Taylor and Jake Thorton-Gielen batted soundly. “Nathan has been fantastic since coming to the club and led from the front and Jake batted responsibly. “They got us close to the target and Jonesy [Brad Jones] hit a few boundaries to get the job done.” Taylor top-scored with 37, while Thorton-Gielen made 32 and Ash Sweet scored 30. Happy to call the match off then and there with the win secured, the two teams had to continue playing as per competition rules. Werribee finished 1-44 off 20 overs. Jake Charge took the wicket for the Lions. The Lions used the opportunity to try some different things. “We were happy to call it off,” Geisler said. “A couple of other guys got to roll the arm over. Nathan Taylor bowled four or five overs. He had been bowling in the nets.” The win means a perfect start to the season for the Lions, who are one of five teams in their division to win both matches. Knowing they were playing two quality sides, the Lions are more than happy with their start. They now turn their attention to the T20 format for next round, taking on Taylors Lakes at Lionheart Reserve. Geisler said it would be a challenge. “We struggled in T20 matches the last season,” he said. “It’s an interesting one and we’ll look to our squad and put out our best T20 team. “Hopefully we can go 3-0. It’s a hard format and we’ve just got to pick the best team, I’m not sure the team will change too much.” In Women’s Victorian Premier Cricket seconds, Melton suffered a big loss to Carlton-Brunswick. The Lions managed just 118 before being bowled out in the 26th over. Carlton-Brunswick made the runs in the 33rd over, finishing 6-119. The Lions sit fourth with a 1-2 record. Jake Thornton-Gielen helped steady Melton’s middle order. (Shawn Smits)
hadn’t played before,” he said. “Most of the other guys have played at higher levels but haven’t played for a number of years. “Being in division 3 means both teams play at the same location, which is the best thing for the teams and the club itself.” He said they hoped to expand their program beyond two senior teams and a junior team in the coming years. “Part of my job is creating a junior program that feeds into the senior side, so that some of us older players can step away and let them thrive.” Tara Murray
Sports shorts Cricket
Darley’s bowlers again did the job in the Ballarat Cricket Association. Facing East Ballarat, the Lions bowled them out for 119. Besides two partnerships, the Lions were in control for the innings. Ben Longhurst and Ryan Ali took three wickets each. The Lions didn’t get off to the best start in their run chase and will resume at 2-27.
VTCA
Melton South Royals recorded a strong win against Gellibrand in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s west A1 division. With 216 on the board, the Royals restricted Gellibrand to 109. Matthew Kozole and Paul Hetherington took three wickets each. In Gellibrand’s second innings they finished 3-120. Melton Centrals remain without a win, after losing to Footscray ANA. Needing 200 for victory, Centrals were bowled out for 142. Footscray ANA finished 5-64 in its second innings.
Bowls
Melton suffered a third straight loss in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. Having struggled the past few weeks, Melton was again on the receiving end of a big loss, this time to Essendon (2). Melton won two rinks but it wasn’t enough, losing 92 (14)-67 (4). Melton sits sixth after four rounds.
CHBD
There was contrasting results for Bacchus Marsh’s two teams in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top grade. Bacchus Marsh Gold was dominant in the side’s 105 (16)-84 (2) win against Lancefield. The second side, Bacchus Marsh Blue, suffered a 129 (18)-67 (0) loss to Trentham. Gisborne and Kyneton Golf were the other winners. In division 2, Gisborne Yellow, Kyneton, Kyneton Golf and Gisborne Red had wins.
Cricket
St Anthonys got its second win of the CV Women’s Community Cricket’s north west competition on Sunday. Having won the previous round due to a forfeit, the Saints got the job done on the field against Gisborne. The Dragons made 3-144 with Saints making 4-146 in reply. Melton Centrals lost to Hoppers Crossing in their match.
