Funding boost for Melton By Stella Tzobanakis Melton is receiving a multimillion dollar boost to help keep up with its booming population. Eight projects in Melton will receive a total of $8.1 million from the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. Projects to be funded for 2017-2018 are: • $2 million towards the $9 million MacPherson Park redevelopment; • $2 million toward the $4 million Melton Central Community Centre redevelopment; • $1.6 million toward the $6.6 million Fraser Rise community hub;

• $1 million toward the $6.7 million Aintree community hub; • $600,000 for the Hannah Watts Park upgrade; and • $300,000 each for the Allenby Road Reserve upgrade, Arnolds Creek playspace and Bill Cahill Reserve. Local Government Minster Marlene Kairouz made the announcement at the completion ceremony of stage three of a $13.1 million Pride of Melton project. Ms Kairoutz said Melton needed the new investment because it is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Victoria.

‘‘

We are elated by this significant funding - Bob Turner announcement

’’

She said a “substantial contribution” was for the redevelopment of MacPherson Park. “We will be working in partnership with the City of Melton council to transform this sporting precinct into a multi-purpose community hub with a new pavilion and significant amenity upgrades,” Ms Kairoutz said.

She said the overall investment would help create community connections, improve opportunities for people to participate in sport and recreation and boost quality of life. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the grants meant major projects in the municipality would soon become a reality. “We are elated by this significant funding announcement, which will help us provide the kind of infrastructure that our rapidly growing community urgently needs,” Cr Turner said. “This funding means that vital community infrastructure projects … will get off the ground sooner.”

Network takes west in a new direction A new group has formed to connect community groups, leaders and volunteers across Melbourne’s west. Established by the HealthWest Partnership, connectwest is a membership-based network which aims to strengthen groups by offering region-wide networking and sharing information. It will support groups and leaders across Melton, Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay and Wyndham.

HealthWest executive officer Gail O’Donnell said connecting the groups will have benefits for the wider community. “Community empowerment and leadership are known to be a driving force in strengthening community health and wellbeing,” Ms O’Donnell said. The group will be officially launched at a public breakfast event at VU MetroWest in Footscray on November 30. The event will include a panel of speakers

including representatives from Melton council, Western Young People’s Independent Network, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and LeadWest. Connectwest was formed as a result of the Community Leadership in the West project, which has been looking into how to support and link community groups, leadership program graduates, health champions and volunteers across the western suburbs. Last stand honoured By Stella Tzobanakis A man who saved a friend’s family from a fire in Scotsburn has been awarded one of Australia’s highest honours. Brendan Walker, 52, of Ballarat, has been awarded a national Bravery Award for his courage while off-duty as a paramedic and volunteer firefighter. Mr Walker had worked a 14-hour shift when he received a pager message on December 19, 2015 about a bushfire in Scotsburn. After checking the CFA website, he noted the fire was several kilometres away from his friend Bruce Rae’s property. Bruce is a fellow Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance Paramedic. The two worked together on the Ballarat MICA Unit for almost 17 years. “I thought Bruce and his family were reasonably safe as the fire was burning away from his property,” Mr Walker said. The day was hot and windy. The temperature was 35 degrees and a strong northerly wind was making fire conditions very high to extreme. “My initial thought was I would take my fire unit out to Bruce’s property and leave it there overnight for protection, just in case something happened,” Mr Walker said. “I have a 600-litre water tank and firefighting pump mounted on a purpose-built trailer.” But an intended social visit turned into a fight for survival. “Within minutes of arriving at the property a thunder cell [storm] had formed close to the fire,” Mr Walker said. “The cold air from the thunder cell and the super-hot air from the fire hit each other causing a ‘micro-burst’ which causes hot air that is rising to suddenly descend. “The direction of the fire changed, blowing it straight toward our location. The gale force wind suddenly hit the property. “Then we could hear the deafening roar of the fire approaching. “I knew at that time there was no escape. We would have to stay and defend. Bruce and his family went into the house and took refuge under wet blankets.” Conditions continued to deteriorate and Mr Walker had to make life and death decisions.

“I could feel pain on the side of my face. I thought it was hot embers burning my cheek. “However, as I began to pull it away I realised I was peeling burnt skin away from the entire side of my face.” Mr Walker instinctively changed his tactics. “At that time I had 50 litres of water left and I planned on hosing myself down so at least my body could be identified. “I didn’t do it.

“I used the last 50 litres to protect the door of the house that would be their escape route.” Bruce and his family emerged from the house when it was reasonably safe. “Bruce noticed I had been burnt and led me over to a water drum and dunked my head in it. “As he did steam began to rise like putting a hot Fir under a water tap. “We both laughed and realised we had survived.”

A $13.1 million Melton town centre refurbishment is a big step closer to being completed. Stage three of the Pride of Melton project – a revamped McKenzie Street – was unveiled last week. The McKenzie Street improvements include a new civic lawn space in front of the Melton Library and Learning Hub created for activities such as picnics and public events. Other refurbishments include consolidated carparking, pedestrian priority footpaths, upgraded and additional lighting, more street trees and garden beds. At the unveiling, Melton mayor Bob Turner said the town centre was becoming unrecognisable. “It has been reinvigorated as a beautiful, safe and modern hub now the whole community can enjoy,” Cr Turner said. Federal Victorian Senator Jane Hume said the project had many economic and social benefits. “I know this space will provide residents and visitors alike with a bustling, dynamic and safe town centre,” Senator Hume said. “The town centre is the focal point for social interaction within the community and these upgrades will attract visitors from the Melton region but also well beyond the region … the construction part of stage three has created 29 new jobs and there are a further 30 ongoing jobs to see the completion of the project.” The McKenzie Street upgrades follow stages one and two, in which a taxi shelter was constructed and the Palmerston Street precinct redeveloped. The Bakery Square and Wallace Square precincts will be the next and final areas to be rejuvenated under the town centre redevelopment. Plans for these precincts are being finalised following a community consultation process. The Pride of Melton project started in May, 2016, and is due to be completed by February, 2019. It has been funded by the federal and state governments and the council. Stella Tzobanakis

Michelle O’Brien is celebrating 30 years at TRY Melton West Preschool. (Mark Wilson)

Cheers to 30 years TRY Melton West Preschool will celebrate 30 years of outstanding service by one of its staff. Michelle O’Brien is described by her colleagues as a “kind and giving person” who is well respected in the Melton community. Mrs O’Brien, 62, told Star Weekly she has loved her time working at the preschool. Fellow teacher Robyn Dickinson said: “I have worked with Michelle for 17 years. She is not only an outstanding teacher but she is really committed to being a friend to the children and their families.” Michelle is known to have a lovely singing

voice and often sings with the children. “It’s an outstanding effort to be at one place for 30 years. Her commitment to this preschool is one to celebrate,” Ms Dickinson said. The preschool will hold a celebration on Tuesday, December 12 from 2.30pm – 5pm with a small presentation planned for 4pm. Children and families who have previously attended the centre, and those who have attended during the past 30 years, are invited to help celebrate the milestone. Dewi Sherry

Rural growth in the pipeline The rural communities of Bungaree and Wallace could soon be the Moorabool Shire’s newest growth zones if a push to have sewerage connected to the two towns is completed. The project was listed among the council’s four priority projects for the coming year at a recent meeting. By 2031 the municipality’s population is expected to swell to 46,124, up from the 32,126 counted at the 2016 census. West Moorabool councillor Tom Sullivan, whose ward takes in both Bungaree and Wallace, said the project would allow the

municipality to more evenly manage growth in the coming decades. Almost half of the shire’s population currently resides in Bacchus Marsh. “What we’re experiencing in Bacchus Marsh is a microcosm of what’s happening in Ballarat so the opportunity to have a dispersed growth model across the shire is a really positive one,” Cr Sullivan said. “There’s a significant opportunity to capitalise on the existing infrastructure such as the highway.” A 2015 report commissioned by the council

found Bungaree and Wallace, which as of 2016 had populations of just 269 and 187 respectively, could house up to 8000 residents if sewerage was installed. Both the council and Central Highlands Water are chipping in up to $50,000 to see a full investigation completed with costings by 2023. CHW infrastructure planning and operations general manager Jeff Haydon said sewerage delivery timeframe was undetermined. “This study is proposed to be completed in conjunction with the necessary community consultation and land use planning

investigations by council to inform the extent of township development and growth areas along with the timing and logical staging of infrastructure works,” he said. While a train line runs through the two townships it is expected to be decommissioned by 2019 as the state government replaces the Bungaree Loop with a smaller alternative track as part of its $518 upgrade to the Ballarat line. Moorabool Shire Council has unsuccessfully lobbied state government to keep the loop open. – The Age

Melton bands push on Melton will play host to a FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands event on Saturday, December 2. The Western Metropolitan Regional Final heat will be held at Melton Community Hall, 238 High Street from 6-10.15pm. Hollow December is one band which will “battle it out” on Saturday. Bassist Dylan Jepsen, 18, said the alternative rock band was excited about being selected to compete in the Melton heat. A win in the heat would mean the band scores a spot in the grand final at Australia’s largest free festival, St Kilda Festival which attracts more than 400,000 visitors every year. “To get to play in St Kilda would be really cool, Dylan said. “We’d get a fair bit more exposure, which would be great.” The band is made up of five 18-year-old Williamstown High School students who have just completed year 12 exams.

Now that school’s out, Dylan and his bandmates Johnsen Cummings (vocals, guitar), Luca Martin (drums), Oliver Voogd (synthesiser/keyboard) and Amos Gibson (violin) – all self-proclaimed “music nerds” – are busy rehearsing. With hundreds of acts competing for a place in regionals, only nine can make it to the grand final on The Push Stage at St Kilda Fesival on Sunday, February 11. Entry is $8 online, or $10 at the door. The Melton event is fully supervised and for all ages. It is also a drug, smoke and alcohol free event. No pass outs available. Vinnies shop a blessing A traditional blessing ceremony heralded in the opening of a new Vinnies store in Bacchus Marsh. St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria state president Michael Liddy said the store, at 8 Grant Street, would help those in the Melton region and beyond in need of material and financial support. “Our charity is first and foremost focused on giving a hand up to people in need, which is such an important part of the culture of our Vinnies shops,” Mr Liddy said. “And there will be a great selection of high-quality clothes and goods at reasonable prices and premium products, too, sales of which will help to fund our local community welfare activities. Every dollar spent in our

shops helps to support people experiencing poverty and hardship.” Mr Liddy said the new shop takes over the iconic The Shed, an auxiliary Vinnies shop that used the outbuildings on the grounds of St Bernard’s Church and which was run for more than 30 years by “an irreplaceable local with a very big heart, Dawn Lewin”. While Ms Lewin said it was sad to see the end of an era, she welcomed a new, bigger Vinnies shop to town. “It’s wonderful to see Vinnies opening a new shop that will be able to better respond to the growing needs in the community,” Ms Lewin said. Zombie movie a monster hit By Goya Dmytryshchak An independent feature film featuring zombie extras from Melbourne’s west premiered last week with three sell-out shows. The Last Hope opened at Lido Cinemas as part of Monster Fest, which is dubbed Australia’s foremost celebration of international cult and horror cinema. The plot revolves around a post-apocalyptic world, with zombies descending on Australia which has so far been unscathed through a brutal border protection policy and internment camps. The film was shot at locations across the west including Seaworks at Williamstown, the Newport Railway Workshops, the former Sunbury asylum, and industrial landscapes around Spotswood and Yarraville. Director Leigh Ormsby said a call-out for zombie extras, which featured in Star Weekly last year, went viral. “We had about 13,000 end up joining the group … and about 3500 applicants,” he said. “For a lot of people, it’s fun to do something that’s quite different – so dressing up and having professional make-up artists work on you. It’s also something that takes you out of your normal comfort zone. “To go into base human instinct as a monster is really appealing to a lot of people, it seems.” He said one of the biggest scenes in Melbourne’s independent film history was shot at Newport and involved more than 500 cast and crew. “On the big-shoot day, there was basically just a nice big horde that runs around the corner and overwhelms a group of soldiers,” Ormsby said. “We had a lot of soldier extras as well, utilising actual members of the Defence Force.

Above: Director Leigh Ormsby with zombie extras Tony Kotsopoulos and David Black. Above right: David Black has his make-up applied by Belinda Tanswell, and below, the finished result. (Pictures: Luke Hemer) Right: Soldiers get ready for their big scene. (Supplied)

“We actually held a rehearsal for all our extras in a park so they could learn how to do some basic falls … because having 250-300 people run around a corner, the potential for incident is massive.” For more information on the film, visit the film’s Facebook page.

All aboard station consultation By Stella Tzobanakis Residents are invited to have their say on the proposed new train station in the future town centre of Toolern. The new Toolern train station – between Rockbank and Melton, near the intersection of Ferris Road in Melton South and the Ballarat-Melbourne rail line – will be part of the state government’s $518 million Ballarat line upgrade. Locals can have their say on the station layout and project planning by completing a short survey at ballaratlineupgrade.vic.gov.au by 5pm, Friday, December 1. Project director Mark Havryluk said community feedback would be included in the final look of the station. “We want locals to have their say on design of the new station at Toolern,” Mr Havryluk said. “Toolern’s population is set to grow and we’re building a station as part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade so people moving to the area can get where they need to go.” The new station will include: • Two platforms connected by an accessible pedestrian link; • Sealed carparking; • Drop-off zones, taxi spaces and secure bicycle facilities; • Bus interchange and shelters; • Security (CCTV) and lighting; and • Station facilities. The Ballarat line upgrade will duplicate 18 kilometres of track between Deer Park West and Melton, paving the way for future electrification to Melton. Construction on the project started in October, and is expected to be completed by late 2019.

Coles Burnside has introduced a ‘Quiet Hour’ to support customers who are, or have family members, on the autism spectrum. Every Tuesday from 10.30-11.30am has been designated ‘Quiet Hour’. Staff will aim to provide a low-sensory shopping experience by making changes within the store, such as reducing noise and distractions to help make a difference to customers who find it challenging to shop in a heightened sensory environment. Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) community engagement and operations manager, Linzi Coyle, said: “People on the autism spectrum often have difficulty processing sensory information and can find sounds, light, smell, touch and taste overwhelming. For many individuals and families, a simple trip to the shops can be difficult.” Coles accessibility sponsor, Peter Sheean, said: “We were really pleased to receive a positive response from our customers and team members, who welcomed Quiet Hour and provided feedback on social media. It’s fantastic to hear that the changes we made in-store during the trial had helped to make a real difference to our customers’ shopping experience.” A total of 68 stores across Australia have been chosen to offer a ‘Quiet Hour’. New grant for old weed issue A Moorabool environmental group has received $26,000 to develop “innovative” and land-sensitive weed control technology. Moorabool Landcare Network has been awarded the federal government grant to create a new tool for weed management – specifically serrated tussock – without the need to use chemicals. Network president Anthony Dufty described the project as “innovative”. “It’ll remove the weed burden but it won’t adversely disturb our cultural heritage,” Mr Dufty said. The group will work with Melbourne University and Dr Graham Brodie to implement the project across Rowsley and Coimadai within the next six months. The network is a collective of 12 landcare groups and five Friends groups across the Shire of Moorabool. It was one of 15 community organisations to receive a share of the $250,000 National Landcare Program funding for environmental projects in the Port Phillip and Western Port region. The funding was provided through Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority’s 2017-18 community grants program. Westernport CMA chief executive David Buntine said the grants supported groups to be part of “the bigger picture” by identifying how their project contributes to regional and national environmental priorities. One of the cornerstones of the Melton community is set to celebrate 150 years of worship and friendship. Melton Uniting Church will mark the occasion with a week-long celebration from December 3-10. Reverend Paul Blacker said: “We’re celebrating 150 years of a significant ministry within the community. We’ve been able to have some significant impact within the community over time, especially with young people and families.” The celebratory week will contain Sunday worships, a celebration dinner, a number of guest speakers and different activities.

“We are a community of faith who loves God and sees a significant future for the church as we reach into this growing community,” he said. The church operates a kindergarten and an opportunity shop. Weekly Sunday services, fellowship opportunity and men’s and women’s groups are among the activities available. “In celebrating the past, the church also has its eyes firmly fixed on the future,” Rev Blacker said. “We believe that the foundations that have been laid by previous generations are a great gift and legacy for the church.” Dewi Sherry

Together, we all achieve By Goya Dmytryshchak

One of the researchers, Isabella Orrells said exclusion was usually unintentional based on what was unfamiliar or misunderstood about a person’s abilities, needs and preferences. “Working with the community showed us all that we are defined by more than one identity or ability and therefore our approach to inclusion shouldn’t just focus on one characteristic.”

A parent with a child with Asperger’s recalling the moment his son scored a basketball goal is among the stories told in a new guide to inclusion in sport. “One of the most amazing moments was when a young kid on the team said to my son, ‘You are going to get a goal this game’,” Adrian recounts. “No one cared about the score, they were all just out there to help him get a goal.” Sports for Everyone: A guide to 360o Inclusion for Young People in Sport has been developed by the Hobsons Bay Community Fund with the University of Melbourne. Six postgraduate social work students from the faculty of medicine, dentistry and health sciences set up a temporary base at the Footscray office of Compton Green Real Estate. Professor Lou Harms said the students worked with Hobsons Bay and Wyndham councils, local parents and representatives from more than 20 clubs to develop the guide aimed at empowering people aged 12 to 18 years. “We discovered that just over half of primary school-aged children are involved in sport and recreation clubs, but in high school and later teen years, this rate falls,” he said. “Some young people face more barriers to participation than others – social, financial and physical – but when these are overcome, everyone benefits.”

Fund chairman Hayden Raysmith said the guide was a living document. “It will be constantly updated and we’re inviting sporting groups to add and contribute case studies and examples of ways in which people with disabilities could be included.” The guide was launched at the Fund’s inaugural Awards for Youth Inclusion in Sport and Recreation where seven local clubs and teams were honoured: Williamstown Seagulls, Glen Orden Sports Club, Barnstoneworth United Football Club, Rainbow Club of Point Cook, Williamstown Cannons Basketball Club, BBs Pool Team/ Altona Sports Club and Williamstown Swimming and Lifesaving Club. a well-worn table before Wednesday night tournaments at Altona Sports Club. Some of the guys joke that playing pool gives them an opportunity to sink a beer. Alsabbagh, who has Down syndrome, is also a talented actor known for roles such as Toby in the ABC TV series Summer Heights High.

Nasser only recently joined. “When I started, I didn’t know how to hit the ball but each week I got better and better,” he said. “I enjoy this team because we have a laugh and play jokes and we’re here to have fun and be social.” Gjomakaj, who plays with one arm and is very competitive, said he also liked to help out in the demanding role of referee. Captain Nick said there was initially resistance from some in the league because “they take their pool very seriously and they felt that it might compromise the seriousness of the competition”. But they agreed to give the BBs a go. “Obviously, 10 years later, it’s been a great success,” Captain Nick said. “A lot of the people I speak to, and I’m witness to it too, have found that the participation of the BBs in the pool league has actually strengthened and increased the importance of the pool league to all the players. “There’s a sense that the BBs bring a certain humanity, if you like, to the league. “It’s been a great benefit to the league generally, not just to the BBs. “Inclusion isn’t just for the BBs and the people who support them – it’s for the community.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Tips for inclusion • Ask if assistance is needed. • Do your best to establish open communication about individual needs. Ensure an equitable and inclusive environment from policies to practices. • Create clear boundaries against discriminatory behaviour. • Establish a buddy system for new members. • Talk about mental health openly and non-judgementally. Seek the help of a professional in supporting club members’ mental health. • Have one entrance that is accessible for all rather than a special entry for people with mobility aids. • Speak clearly and adjust the rate

and volume of speech appropriately to assist with hearing impairment. Ensure signage is clear and concise. • Make sure space is well lit and use colour contrast to assist with vision impairment. • Speak in simple, short sentences to a person with an intellectual impairment/disorder. Break instructions down into simple and direct steps. • Be considerate of other peoples’ cultures and differences. Start culturally-specific programs addressing specific needs. • Be aware not everyone can afford new equipment or clothing. Allow payment to be made in instalments. Take the stress out of the packing process When a couple makes the decision to move into a retirement village, they’re faced with the daunting prospect of packing up their lives and making stuff fit into a new, usually much smaller, environment. The packing process needs to be tackled with a clear plan in mind to avoid a stressful nightmare. Here’s some handy questions – and answers. Who will get items that just won’t fit in the next home? Make a list as you go through your house, then make piles of items for different destinations – to a friend, relative, charity or even as part of a garage sale. Will existing furniture fit in the new place? Get a blueprint of the layout of the new home to find out the exact room dimensions. Knowing what will fit helps make the decision-making process more straightforward. Which rooms in your house should you pack up first? If you have attic storage, start there. Items stored in the roof space are likely to be the least used in normal life and most discardable. Or it could be the spare room or laundry cupboards that hide the most clutter. Ask yourself questions about each item, such as: • When was the last time I used this? • Does it serve a purpose in my new life? • Does it have irreplaceable sentimental value? • Will it last long or is repairing worth it? • Can I get by without it? • How often do I use it and for what purpose? • Do I know someone else who will benefit from it more than me? Am I being kind to myself during the process? Moving house is a significant change, one that can be physically exhausting and emotionally overwhelming. Factor in that moving from a beloved home to a retirement place can trigger deeper emotions, such as fear, grief or even resentment. Remind yourself that you don’t have to get rid of everything you treasure – that a cull will, in fact, simplify your life. If you can’t make up your mind about particular items, buy time and place them in storage until you better understand how you feel. Belongings are repositories of memories, so take time to reflect. It’s an important step in ultimately letting go.

Packing up and moving on can be both stressful and liberating.

And when the job’s finally done, celebrate the occasion with someone – you deserve it.

Fight power bills with some simple money-saving home improvements While rising energy costs are getting everyone down, it is possible to tackle extremes of cold or heat at low cost. Sustainability Victoria’s Business and Built Environment director Warren Overton says a little time and a few dollars spent making energy saving improvements can save up to $1000 a year. Homes built before 2005 with a 1.8-star energy rating, he says, are pushing hard against comfort. But Sustainability Victoria provides very helpful tips to remain comfortable and save some money. Here are four of the best: 1. Set your thermostat to between 18-20°. Every extra degree of heating adds 10 per cent to your heating bill. 2. Trap the air – close doors between areas that are being heated and cooled if you don’t have central heating. 3. Draught-proof your home. A lot of energy leaks out through gaps around windows, under doors and skirting boards, gaps/holes in exposed floor boards, vents and open manholes. Your local hardware shop can provide sealant, weather stripping and door snakes, which are inexpensive, easily used and help you to save up to $150 a year. 4. When buying new gas and electric appliances use the star rating system to find the most efficient models. The price difference between a three and five-star fridge, for example, is not necessarily great and can save nearly $200 a year. Some retailers’ websites let you search for appliances by their star-ratings, and the Smarter Choice Retail Program can help you get a better price for a range of products.

SPORT High-flying Kight sets sights on national championships A big off season for Jordan Kight has paid off, with the Footscray cricketer selected for the Victoria Metro under-19 team for the National Championships. Kight, who has been playing for the Bulldogs second XI, decided that it was either now or never to take his cricket to the next level. A talented batsman, he knew that there was a lot more that he could show. With that in mind, he set two targets for the 2017-18 cricket season. The first was to make the Victoria Metro team this year. The hard work paid off with the Melton resident named for the championships which starts next week. “I’ve done a few extra little sessions by myself and I’ve worked hard at training,” he said. “I’ve done a bit of extra work and it’s pretty overwhelming. “It’s good to see all the hard work pay off.” It’s the first time the 19-year-old has earned

selection in a Victoria under-age representative team. He said he would sit down and set a goal for the national championships. “I want to come out with a decent average,” he said. “I’ll set a goal soon of how many runs I want to make.” Kight is the second member of his family to play for Victoria at the national championships. Older brother Dylan, who is Footscray’s wicketkeeper, also played at under-19 level and Victoria’s future XI team. Jordan got into the sport because of his older brothers. “When I was five I started playing under-12s,” he said. “Both my brothers were playing and they needed fill-ins.” Having achieved one of his pre-season goals, Kight is now focused on achieving his second, a Victoria Premier Cricket first IX debut. Heading into last weekend’s matches, Kight

was averaging just over 31 with the bat in the one-dayers and T20s. “I want to play first XI cricket in the two-dayers,” he said. “Speaking with the Footscray coach, he’s been saying that I’ve been going well. “I want to cement a spot in the firsts in the near future and then hopefully move onto cricket at a higher level.” Kight’s Footscray teammate Thomas Ewing has been selected in the Victoria Country side for the same championships. Former Bacchus Marsh star Jack Lalor is also part of the Victoria Country team for the second straight year. Tara Murray Jordan Kight will represent Victoria Metro at the national championships. Woodend strikes a blow over Sunbury

It was a tough day for Melton Centrals, including captain-coach Adam Hulett. (Mark Wilson)

Centrals retain hope By Tara Murray

Melton Centrals is hoping its first win of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association season is just around the corner. Normally among the contenders in whichever competition they are in, a win-less start to the season is uncommon for the side. Centrals captain-coach Adam Hulett said losing the first four games of the west A1 competition season wasn’t ideal. “A couple of games have been close and they haven’t gone our way,” he said. “If they go our way, our season looks very different. Those games have got away from us late and sometimes that’s life.” Hulett said it was just moments in games that were hurting them and leaving them unable to put the pressure back on the opposition. “It’s not that we’re not working hard, things

are just not working at the moment,” he said. “We lose two or three wickets at a time and you can’t afford to do that against some of the better bowling attacks. “It’s something every team works on at training, trying to stop that happening.” On Saturday, Centrals were left to rue a poor start to day two against Williamstown Congs. The Congs resumed at 5-166 after rain ended play on day one early. They quickly piled on the runs and finished 7-235. It was a few too many runs for Centrals’ liking. Centrals were bowled out for 168 with nearly six overs to spare. Despite Centrals being win-less and sitting second bottom, Hulett said finals isn’t out of the question. “Once we get that first win and get the ball rolling, we’ll be right,” he said. Centrals faces Williamstown Colts on

Saturday on day one of their two-dayer. While all other sides have to play a rescheduled one-dayer on Sunday, Centrals has a bye. In other games, Melton South Royals lost to Grand United. In a one-day match due to day one being washed out, the Royals made 8-177 from their overs with Skipper Paul Hetherington leading the way. He fell just short of a century, with time beating him as he finished 94 not out. United needed every one of its 40 overs, making 7-178, with the winning runs hit in the final over. In north A1, Sydenham-Hillside got an outright win against Barkley Street United. Restricting struggling United to 92, the Sharks made 5-236 with the bat. They bowled United out for 82 in their second innings. Caroline Springs got its second win of the season, defeating Aberfeldie Park.

The big hitters were out in force in the opening round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s T20 shield. Four sides in the premier division passed 180, with Woodend taking it further passing 200. Marcus Stewart was the star for Woodend, making 83 in his side’s total of 5-209 against Sunbury United. United also didn’t hold back with the bat, but fell 22 runs short of victory, making 8-188. Steven Fogarty made 51. Riddell skipper Mick Allen did what he does best, making plenty of runs. Having averaged 77.50 with the bat in the Bombers T20 premiership win last season, Allen was on fire against Gisborne on Tuesday night. Opening the batting, Allen made 94 which included nine fours and five sixes in the Bombers 8-188. He was then the pick of the bowlers for the Bombers, taking 2-11 as the Dragons were bowled out for 78. Romsey got its first win of the GDCA season, knocking off Lancefield. Romsey made a massive 5-182, with the Tigers managing 5-109 in reply. Bacchus Marsh had another comprehensive win, defeating Sunbury. The Roar made 8-73, which the Bulls made with eight wickets and more than 10 overs to spare. Diggers Rest Bulla defeated Rupertswood in the other premier division match. In the district division, last season’s winner Wallan proved too strong for Ashfield. The Magpies made 8-148, with Ashfield bowled out for 125. Nathan Anderson was the standout for Ashfield with three wickets and making 31. Macedon claimed the win against East Sunbury. The Thunder made 8-199 with Liam Sherlock the star at the top of the order. An unbeaten 55 to Pat Trotta guided Macedon to 4-122. Eynesbury defeated St Anthonys in the other game. Kyneton had a bye. The second round of the pool matches will be played on Tuesday, November 28. Tara Murray 53 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 28, 2017

Burras bats crumble

Hillside and Taylors Lakes will kick off the Essendon District Football League season on Good Friday. The match between the division one local rivals is one of two matches on Good Friday. The rest of division 1 kicks off on April 13. In division 2, Burnside Heights starts its season on April 7, away to Keilor Park. The Bears play their first home match against East Sunbury the following round in a twilight match. The league is also on the hunt for a new chief executive after Marc Turri decided to step down from the role.

By Tara Murray Diggers Rest Bulla has been left to rue a middle-order collapse against Sunbury in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. The Burras were cruising at 3-125, yet that hard work was wasted when they went on to lose 7-44 to be all out for 169. Burras playing coach Rasika Batepola said the collapse was all of their own doing and the players were bitterly disappointed after the day’s play. “It was our bad batting,” he said. “They didn’t look like getting us out. We got ourselves out, which we can’t be doing at this level. “We spoke after play and took the blame for our batting. Hopefully, it doesn’t happen again.” Batepola top-scored for the Burras with 40, while Sumanjan Fernando made 36. Six other players reached double figures, but no one was able to go on with it. Brad Hunter was the best bowler for Sunbury, taking seven wickets. With bowling the Burras’ strength, Batepola said they were still confident of getting the win. “On our ground 170 is about 210 to 220, as it’s not a fast ground,” he said. “Early wickets are the key. We need to get their captain [Dylan Wright] out as he is the man making the runs at the moment.” A win is vital for the Burras in their bid to remain in finals contention. The coach is hoping a win against Sunbury and then getting the points against Romsey in the final round before Christmas will improve the Burras’ record to 3-3 heading into the break. He said they were hoping to have close to a full side for the rest of the season after struggles with player availability. “Until this week, we’ve had about 60 per cent of our side available each week,” Batepola said. “This week we had 90 per cent available, which has made it a bit better.” Bacchus Marsh conceded its biggest score of the season against Gisborne. The Dragons made 230 on the back of an unbeaten 143 from Darren Ward. Madushanka Ekanayaka, Rhys Watson and Ian Spiteri took three wickets each for the Bulls. Riddell has a slight advantage against Lancefield after day one. The Bombers made 154 before Matthew Livingstone took four wickets to have the Tigers in trouble at 4-18. Rupertswood produced its best batting performance of the season, making 244 against Woodend. Romsey made 7-266 against Sunbury United in the other game. In B grade, St Anthonys and Eynesbury had contrasting days. The Saints made their fourth straight score of more than 295, this time against Kyneton. Led by a century to Paul Scott, the Saints made 9-366. The Eagles conceded a second straight 300 plus score, with Wallan making 375.

Bowls

Bacchus Marsh Gold has upset Gisborne in a thriller in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top grade. The two teams won two rinks apiece, in Gold’s 92 (14)-88 (4) win. Kyneton lost to Romsey 91 (12)-85 (6) despite winning three of the four rinks. Meanwhile, Kyneton Golf smashed Trentham 113 (18)-58 (0) and Lancefield smashed Bacchus Marsh Blue 153 (18)-57 (0).

Bowls

Melton’s good form continued in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1. After a week’s break for the Victorian Open, Melton continued where it left off, beating Brunswick 95 (16)-67 (2). Despite the win, Melton remains fifth, but is now just one point outside the top four.

Ballarat CA

Rain played havoc on the opening day of the Ballarat Cricket Association’s round six clashes, which will set up an interesting day two. Ballarat-Redan and Wendouree, and Napoleons-Sebastopol and Golden Point will have their matches continue as two-dayers as more than 20 overs were bowled on day one. Darley and North Ballarat, along with East Ballarat and Mt Clear, will have their scores from Saturday wiped and play in one-dayers due to a lack of overs bowled.

Lions’ batsmen crack on to redeem disappointing loss Melton enjoyed a day out with the bat on Saturday in Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association’s north-west competition. Coming off their first loss of the season, the Lions hit back in a big way against Preston on day one of their clash. The Lions had little trouble on their way to 3-329. Lions’ coach Nathan Geisler said his side had batted well and with a lot of patience as the rain clouds circled around the ground. “We got off to a slowish start making seven runs off the first 10 overs,” he said. “The guys … made the most of the conditions with a fast outfield. “Ben MacRae batted all day and [David] Kirky batted really well too. Butch [Anthony Gale] batted for a while and made 30 at the top of the order. 54 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 28, 2017

“It was one of the those days we wanted the rain to stay away.” MacRae finished 155 not out, while Kirk made 123 in the highest score this season for both players. Geisler said they had focused on their batting and making sure they were able to not only make runs, but bat time when needed. “Our top-five batsmen have all made contributions at some point,” he said. “Ben had been out a couple of times off really good catches. It’s been about trying to make the most of the opportunities.” Geisler knows they will need to bowl well on day two if they are to get their fourth win of the season. It will help keep the Lions in a strong position and in the top six as they get closer to the Christmas break. Geisler said the previous round loss to

undefeated Brunswick gave them an indication of where they sit this season. “Looking back at day one we dropped seven catches and ended up getting done by 50 runs,” he said. “It tells us if we had held our catches they wouldn’t have made 250. Nathan Taylor made a century, but if one of our top order made a 30 or 40 it would have been the difference in the game.” The Lions seconds kept Preston to 7-215. Meanwhile, the Lions’ lost the opening round of the Women’s Victorian Premier Cricket seconds T20 competition. The Lions made 5-86 from their overs against Essendon Maribyrnong Park. The Bombers made the runs with 16 balls and seven wickets in hand. Tara Murray

Fogarty thrilled to be off to the Cattery Western Jets draftee Lachlan Fogarty will get to call AFL superstars Patrick Dangerfield, Gary Ablett jnr and Joel Selwood his teammates next season. Suffice to say, the star young midfielder is still pinching himself after landing at the Geelong Cats with pick 22 in the AFL National Draft on Friday night. “To be honest, I still can’t believe it, it hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Fogarty told Star Weekly. “It’s crazy to think I’ll be learning off those guys and playing with them. “Probably the first few weeks, I’ll just be staring at them at training. “It’s not just those guys, it’s the whole team, they’ve been so successful over such a long period of time, so I’m really excited to be a part of that.” Fogarty was considered a draft night steal for Geelong. The Spotswood product was talked up as a mid-to-late first round fancy, but he slipped to the Cats early in the second round. ‘Fogs’, as he is known, could not have enjoyed

a more complete junior career, making every post a winner, be it with the Jets, Vic Metro, NAB AFL Academy or St Kevin’s College. There was still a bit of draft night tension for Fogarty though, when he saw some clubs that were linked to him overlook him in the back end of the first round. “I was getting a bit worried, but with pick 22, Geelong said my name and I’m just really excited for the next chapter,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to do this for so long, it’s been my dream, so I guess it’s just a bonus that I get to stay close to home.” Fogarty said his ability to work in tight confines on a football field might have been strengthened with his basketball background. The 18-year-old was a star player for Altona Gators in the juniors, winning four most valuable player awards, a state championship and representing Vic Metro at the nationals. “I was heavily into my basketball,” Fogarty said. “The basketball has helped my footy in a

number of ways, just the awareness [in the contested ball] and the ability to use both sides of my body has been really helpful.” Fogarty settled on a football career and it’s a good thing too with the talent at his disposal. He comes from a football-loving family, including brothers Michael, who played in Footscray’s VFL premiership, and Matthew, who played in a Spotswood WRFL flag winner. Fogarty is proud to call Spotswood his home club. He is a third generation Woodsman player, as his grandfather Don Smith and dad Terry also played for the club. Fogarty made his name for the Jets as an inside midfielder, but his fastest route to senior football could be in a small forward role. He does, however, envisage a future in the midfield at the top level. “Down the track, I see myself becoming a full-time midfielder, so to get to that I’ll need to improve my endurance and strength as well.” Lance Jenkinson

Cameron Rayner shows off his new colours in the Harbour City on Saturday. (lions.com.au)

Teen Jet makes history By Lance Jenkinson Cameron Rayner has become the first Western Jets player to be taken No.1 overall in an AFL National Draft. Rayner became hot property after a stellar top-age season with the Jets in the TAC Cup and with Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships, with the Brisbane Lions using their first selection in the draft to secure his services. The Hillside Sharks/Essendon Doutta Stars product was the centre of much speculation in the lead-up to the draft, with cameras capturing his every move on draft day. But when the moment arrived, even Rayner was none the wiser about where he would land until a text message came through from his manager. “My manager sent me a little lion emoji on my phone and that’s when I knew,” he told Star Weekly Weekly. Rayner rose to the top of recruiter wish lists in a remarkable 2017 season, with his play for Vic Metro at the nationals sealing his place at the top of a talented pile of star young players.

The 18-year-old turned heads with his bull-at-a-gate style of play and his ability to rise in the big moments of matches. Rayner has admitted his endurance running needs to improve for him to become a full-time midfielder at the next level, but from the moment his name was called out, he was keen to get into the elite training environment at the Lions and waste no time in his bid to become the best player he can. “I switched straight into game mode,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to getting up there, really excited to start training.” Rayner, a cornerstone of Vic Metro’s run to the under-18 national title, did allow himself the chance to reflect on a successful junior career and enjoy the draft outcome with his family. He particularly enjoyed sharing the moment with his grandparents, who made the trip to Sydney for the draft with the rest of his family. “I think it’s important that we enjoyed the moment that we’ve had and I got to spend it with my family and friends, so I just loved it,” he said. “Everyone was pretty calm, but I think my sister cried a little bit.”

Rayner quickly realised the enormity of his achievement when he spoke to Western Jets coach Torin Baker, who informed him that he was the first Jets player taken with first pick. “It’s huge to think of some of the players that have come out of the Jets,” he said. “That’s just a huge honour as well.” Rayner was already getting to know his Brisbane Lions teammates at the weekend. His phone was buzzing with phone calls and text messages welcoming him to the club. One of three Jets taken in the draft – along with midfielder Lachlan Fogarty, who landed at Geelong with pick 22, and ruck-forward Tristan Xerri, who went to North Melbourne with pick 72 – Rayner is not daunted by being the only Jets player moving interstate. “I had a couple of FaceTime calls and they’re super excited to have me up there and I’m excited to be up there,” Rayner said. “I’m pretty much going on my own, but I’ve got Toby Wooller from the Oakleigh Chargers, who I’m pretty good mates with, we’re going up there. “I’m pretty happy – it’s a fresh start and I’ll try to earn my spot.”

Western Jets ruck-forward Tristan Xerri endured a long wait to hear his name called out on draft night, but the result could not have been any better. Xerri got called out with pick 72 by North Melbourne – the team he grew up supporting. “I’ve followed North all my life, along with dad,” he told Star Weekly. “Just waking up this morning and getting messages last night from Todd [Goldstein], Ben [Brown], Jack Ziebell and Shaun Higgins – it’s surreal, I can’t believe it. “I’m heading down to Arden Street on Monday and I can’t wait to meet all the boys and get stuck into some training.” Xerri bolted into draft contention after an impressive top-age season for the Jets in the TAC Cup. He will be a two-dimensional player for North Melbourne. He can play as a strong marking forward and an athletic ruckman, as demonstrated by his performances for Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships. Xerri was guaranteed a spot on the Werribee Tigers’ list for 2018 if he was not drafted, but it was Werribee that bolstered his prospects when he played three games as a 23rd man for the VFL club this season. “They’ve been great looking after me and giving me the opportunity last year,” he said. “It gave me confidence being able to perform at VFL level and showed the recruiters what I can do. “It’s maybe what got me over the line, so that was great.” Xerri’s already been fast-tracked by the coaching of Torin Baker at the Jets and Scott Korzcynski at Caroline Springs College. He played under Korzcynski for Caroline Springs Lakers in the club’s 2016 WRFL division 2 premiership. “Scott’s been huge for me,” Xerri said. “In year 10, there wasn’t much of me – just a relatively tall kid who couldn’t kick a footy, but had some height. “He stuck with me, taught me the fundamentals and I had a good year in year 10. “He had a connection with the Western Jets, so he spoke to me, spoke to the Jets as well, so he was probably the reason why I ended up getting my first game.” Xerri is the first Caroline Springs player to make it to the AFL. MOTOR Alltrack rides nicely in its niche By Vani Naidoo, Marque Motoring

When Volkswagen decided to give the Golf a mid-life spruce up, the Alltrack was also invited to the party and presented with a range of trendy updates that will keep its dance card filled. For starters, there are two more variants to accompany the 132TSI – the 132TSI Premium and a diesel, the 135TDI Premium – that will offer buyers greater options. And there are tweaks to design, infotainment and safety features to add more value to the proposition. The Alltrack is well-equipped with standard features with options packages for those who fancy a touch more. Our entry-level 132TSI boasted 17-inch alloys, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights, cruise control with speed-limiter, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, reverse camera, parking sensors and a comprehensive safety package that has been boosted further with this update. The Golf Alltrack has never hurt the eye and a slightly refined exterior with new LED lights and bumpers certainly reinforces that feeling. It is restrained but classy, a look replicated on the inside too, where quality materials and a streamlined design are complemented by restrained trim and sensible buttons and dials. A larger 8.0-inch colour touchscreen now fronts the infotainment system and it is easy to navigate with clear crisp modern-looking graphics. Pairing your phone is child’s play with smartphone connectivity through Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The unit itself, is nicely integrated into the dash.

Offer ends 23/12/2015. Exclusive to Alan Mance Dealerships in Bacchus Marsh only. Advert must be presented to redeem offer. Diesel & 4x4 may incur an extra cost. LMCT 9718

The revised Golf Alltrack is restrained yet classy inside and out. (Pictures: Supplied)

Under the bonnet is the same 1.8-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder that arrived with the Alltrack in 2015. It is punchy and reliable with 132kW of power and 280Nm of torque and drives through a smooth six-speed dual-clutch auto. There is also the choice of a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel which delivers 135kW and 380Nm and is paired with a seven-speed transmission. The Alltrack’s safety package now has additional active crash avoidance features like front assist with city emergency brake, front

and rear sensors, trailer assist and a driver fatigue detection system. The cabin feels comfortable and reasonably spacious, with passengers benefitting from more headroom than the Golf. However, there’s not much more room to stretch out, especially in the rear. The back seat is designed for three but the transmission tunnel suggests that two would be the preferable choice. The Alltrack glides along without fuss, with enough power when needed.

It performs well on winding roads and the open highway. It remains quite flat through the corners despite its increased height, with good grip and a fair bit of finesse. The ride is on the firmish side, but handling is comfortable and refinement is as you would expect from Volkswagen. The 4Motion all-wheel drive system offers extra assurance on most surfaces. While the Alltrack is no real off-roader, it does make light work of secondary roads and is

good in slippery conditions. Despite fuel-saving technologies, the Alltrack is not as light on the juice as you may like. We struggled to match the official 6.8L/100km efficiency figures. While wagons may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the Alltrack does offer that higher middle ground between sedan and SUV that may appeal. It is fun to drive, spacious and comfortable enough for families and brings that little touch of adventure.
