Chainsaw massacre By Esther Lauaki Parks Victoria and Moorabool police are calling for witnesses after vandals felled five trees – some more than 100 years old. A chainsaw was used to fell the trees, which were left at Lerderderg Campground around the Upper Chadwick Track between December 3 and 4. Parks Victoria district manager Tony English said no wood was taken from the stringybarks and grey gums. A large steel fire-pit, engraved with the name of Parks Victoria, was pulled from the ground and removed from the site. “We see a lot of things going on in our parks, but this is a senseless act we are struggling to understand,” Mr English said. “We’re stunned by the scale of this vandalism, which has killed trees that have been growing for more than a century. “They simply went around the park chopping the largest trees they could see. “They were trees in a beautiful location we were hoping the public could continue to enjoy.”

Mr English said it was thought four to six people would have been involved. “They are very fortunate that they didn’t drop these trees on themselves,” he said. “It was a very amateurish job, but they’ve managed to drop these trees all the same. “Felling such large trees would have been dangerous, noisy and time-consuming, so we’re asking anyone who might have heard or seen suspicious activity to contact Parks Victoria or Victoria Police. “In the meantime, our staff will be hard at work to clear the campsite ready for visitors to enjoy the state park during the Christmas holidays.” Penalties for cutting, felling, removing, damaging or destroying vegetation in national and state parks can include initial fines under the National Parks Act 1975, additional fines under the Wildlife Regulations 2013 and court judgments in which further penalties may be applied. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Council prides itself on being proactive in its approach to shaping our community, and addressing the opportunities that years of sustained residential growth present.
It gives me great pleasure to confirm that upgrades to Westwood Drive are set to begin in early 2018, after the State Government approved plans for the $9.1 million project last month.

This is why we were thrilled to learn that Council received $8.1 million in funding for critical community infrastructure projects, under the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF). The eight funded projects include the redevelopment of the Melton Central Community Centre ($2 million towards a $4 million project), and stage one of the redevelopment of MacPherson Park ($2 million towards a $9 million project); two very exciting projects. Melton courts a new stadium By Dewi Sherry A new stadium with five indoor basketball courts has been earmarked for Toolern, while Caroline Springs Stadium will be expanded from three courts to six under plans unveiled by Melton council. Melton council has been working on plans to increase the number of indoor – or “high ball” – courts that can accommodate basketball, netball, volleyball and badminton. Melton recreation and youth manager Troy Scoble said council was planning for the
future, with the current joint use agreement providing access to the existing Melton Indoor Recreation Centre, owned by the state government, expiring in December, 2019. “While council will still seek to provide the community access to this facility post-2019, council has been busy planning for the future of indoor ball sports in the Melton township and surrounds for beyond that period,” he said. “Council has now resolved that the Toolern precinct is to be the site of a new five-court high ball indoor court stadium.
“Council will consider funding to commence the planning and design work for a new stadium as part of decisions to be made regarding the 2018-19 capital projects budget.” Plans are already in place to expand Caroline Springs Stadium from three courts to six, with the state government recently committing $2.5 million to the project. The Toolern plans come after Basketball Victoria last week released its Victoria Facility Master Plan, which highlights facility development and expansion required
for the future of basketball across Victoria. Basketball Victoria chief executive Nick Honey said Victorian basketball was booming, putting pressure on indoor facilities. “Without further intervention, basketball associations across the state will struggle to meet the increasing demand,” he said. Melton residents currently have access to nine courts across four stadiums, including Caroline Springs Stadium, Heathdale College Melton, Melton Indoor Recreation Centre and Melton Victoria University.

Emergency service volunteers in the City of Melton will benefit from two state government grants. Bacchus Marsh SES will receive $8328 towards buying a new motorcycle, while Eynesbury CFA will receive $46,667 for a field command vehicle. The grants are part of the state government’s 2017-18 Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program, which will distribute $13 million to about 300 emergency volunteer organisations across Victoria. Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, said: “Volunteers in the city of Melton do an incredible job keeping the local community safe and they deserve nothing but the best equipment.” Hume CFA will also receive money to buy a projector and photocopier. “This funding boost for the Bacchus Marsh SES, Eynesbury CFA and Hume CFA will help volunteers across the district continue their important and life saving work,” she said. The program will fund equipment, including vehicles, trucks, tankers, watercraft, trailers and facility upgrades.

RACV identifies at-risk suburbs By Esther Lauaki Rockbank and Plumpton residents have a one in 25 chance of having their homes burgled, according to the RACV’s annual analysis of burglary hot spots. The suburbs ranked third in the Greater Melbourne area’s top-10 hotspots for burglaries. Nearby Diggers Rest ranked seventh, with one in 32 houses being burgled in the past financial year. Figures showed that about half of the top-10 postcodes, including Rockbank, Plumpton and
Diggers Rest, contain new housing estates and that aggravated incidents were on the rise. RACV public policy and corporate affairs manager Bryce Prosser said several factors made new housing estates across the state more attractive for burglars. “We believe this could be because new homes include new appliances and often adjoin vacant blocks, which aid quick entry and exit,” Mr Prosser said. “With many people at work during the day these newer suburbs are much easier targets.” But with one Victorian household burgled
every 15 minutes, Mr Prosser said there were actions residents could take to reduce their risk. “Our analysis tells us one in six (17 per cent) of all break-ins occur through an unlocked or open door or window,” he said. “Victorians can easily prevent these occurrences by locking up when leaving the home and being mindful of locking doors while at home. “With 42 per cent of burglaries through a forced entry, it is important to ensure locks on all entries are secure.” He said that installing good-quality locks
on doors and windows and installing curtains and blinds to remove valuable items from plain sight is a good place to start. The statistics also showed that aggravated burglary rates were on the rise, jumping 11 per cent in the 12 months to June. Most aggravated burglaries – 74 per cent – happened between 7pm and 6am, with the highest volumes between 11pm and midnight. Cardinia, Clyde and Clyde North topped the state’s metropolitan burglary hot spots for the second year in a row. Find out how your postcode ranks at www.racv.com.au/burgstats
Getting into the spirit There will be plenty of free family fun to be had around Melton as Christmas draws closer. The RCCG LifeWay Chapel is hosting a Carols in the Park event at Atherstone Regional Play Space this Sunday (December 17) – the first of two twilight community music events happening in the coming week. Melton council is also hosting its Twilight Christmas @ the Horse event on December 19 along High and McKenzie streets. Carols in the Park will include performances by bands and Melton musicians and evening tea served later in the night. Santa will also make an appearance from 7pm. The Twilight Christmas @ the Horse event also promises fun for the whole family with stories, live music and craft activities in various locations. Festivities will start at 4pm and will include a Christmas art trail with an interactive children’s quiz challenge, photo booth, giant
outdoor games and roving performers. Melton mayor Bob Turner said he was pleased to be able to share some Christmas cheer with residents. “We know how much Carols by Candlelight meant to the community, which is why cancelling the event last weekend was so difficult for us,” Cr Turner said. “We are very excited to present Twilight Christmas @ the Horse in its place, with countless activities to bring joy to families in our wonderful city.” Esther Lauaki

Students at Arnold’s Creek Primary School found a creative way to spread the word about cyber safety. Year 3 and 4 pupils teamed up with author Emma Bowd to learn how to be “real” authors as part of a writers in residence program run by youth literacy agency Ardoch. The pupils helped to write and produce Freddie the Famous Ferret, a story about a social media superstar and a horse named Petey Pan who face cyber safety issues and are able to resolve them together to become the best of friends. Teacher Karen Calleja said that writing had been a major focus of Arnolds Creek Primary School this year. “We wanted to develop an experience where children could be authors,” Ms Calleja said. “Students investigated the importance of being cyber safe and the role we all play in being cyberwise.

significant to not only Christians, but for all mankind. “We have found tremendous unity across the local churches of Melton and we want to encourage it with numerous combined events, Christmas Under the Stars being our major event each year. “Our annual Christmas carols event is aimed at celebrating the common heart we have in this wonderful Christmas season.” Christmas Under the Stars will be held at the Melton Town Centre outdoor amphitheatre. New film targets bullying By Esther Lauaki A Caroline Springs filmmaker is pulling no punches as she addresses bullying in her latest work. Director Giovanna Mercuri is halfway through the filming of her latest movie, The Target, which examines the effect that bullying has on individuals, families and communities. Mercuri said the full feature drama is about different types of bullying. “It’s based on true stories,” she said. “We’re using local places and local stories from around Melton and Brimbank. “The The Target demonstrates the negative and positive ways people deal with bullying. “It’s aimed at everyone. It’s about how some people handle bullying … and the detrimental effects that bullying has on people.” Mercuri said she hoped the film would educate people. “In my work as a counsellor, I come across a lot of people experiencing bullying and the biggest thing for them was the lack of action from managers or teachers who tried to sweep bullying under the carpet,” she said. “Some people choose to fight back, other people might choose to self harm, some stay quiet and others fall into various states of mental illness. “I hope that viewers walk away more educated on how they can get help. If they are the bully, I hope that they can get help and find other ways to deal with whatever they are going through.” Mercuri started her own film production company because she wanted to make movies about social issues. “I felt like I needed to do more … I wanted to do something that promotes early intervention in these types of situations.” The Target will be released in 2018.

Call for more rail upgrades Moorabool council is calling on the state government to fund a business case for more upgrades to the Ballarat rail line. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell and chief executive Rob Croxford, both members of the Ballarat Rail Action Committee (BRAC), are among those advocating for improvements. “The group [BRAC] has a good idea of the needs and challenges along the line, and we have identified the need for a business case for proposed future upgrades,” Cr Tatchell said. “We would be looking at things such as the electrification to Melton and potentially Bacchus Marsh, quadruple tracks for V/Line and metro trains, and park and ride options at Warrenheip or Wallace.” A submission is being made to the 2018-19 state budget for a business case on electrification to Melton, Cr Tatchell said. “This will not only look at the possibility of electrification to Bacchus Marsh/Rowsley but implications for the whole line. “The metro tunnel needs to be completed in 2024 before electrification will be effective, but planning for this does need to start now. “What we need is a commitment from the state government for this business case so the future of the line can be developed appropriately and with the best outcomes for our growing communities.” Esther Lauaki

Police urge drivers to slow down By Dewi Sherry Police have targeted speeding drivers in a bid to lower the road toll on some of Melton’s highest risk rural roads. Hopkins Road in Truganina, Melton Highway in Plumpton, Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road in Toolern Vale, Gisborne-Melton Road in Toolern Vale and Vineyard Road in Diggers Rest were in the spotlight during the three-month TAC-funded Operation Cast. There were no serious injury or fatal
collisions on the roads during the operation, which ran from September to November. But Melton Highway Patrol officer in charge Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier said a “disturbing 262 drivers were detected doing the wrong thing. “Whilst it was pleasing that we were able to secure the additional funding from TAC to provide additional patrols and presence on our five high-risk roads, it is disturbing that 262 drivers were detected committing road-related offences for a total of 355 offences, he said.
‘‘
When driving these roads ensure you drive at safe - Chris Stuhldreier speeds
’’
According to police, there were 215 speeding offences detected where the driver was 10-25km/h over the speed limit. A further 18 offences were for more than 25km/h over the limit. “The correlation between speed and
road trauma cannot be ignored, Sergeant Stuhldreier said. During the operation there were two drug offences, eight unlicensed drivers were nabbed and 13 were driving unregistered vehicles. “Twenty-two mobile phone offences were detected which is also concerning as science tells us that distraction is another leading contributor towards road trauma, Sergeant Stuhldreier said. “When driving these roads, ensure you drive at safe speeds, remain alert, and avoid distractions.
Pet care a hot topic Pet owners are being urged to keep their dogs, cats and other animal friends safe and sheltered during summer. Wyndham environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said it was important to consider the wellbeing of pets during the warmer weather. “Summer is a great time of year that many of us look forward to, but it can also be a dangerous time for our beloved pets, Cr Marcus said. “It’s important that we all remember to leave lots of bowls of fresh water out for our pets, and make sure they can find a shady place to get away from the heat on hot days. Cr Marcus, a cat owner, said it was cruel to leave animals in hot cars, even for a little while. “Even if you are just ducking out to a shop quickly, your pets can quickly suffer from exhaustion and dehydration, so make sure you don’t leave them behind, she said. Cr Marcus stressed the importance of leaving out extra buckets or bowls of water for
animals on hot days, in case they accidentally spilt or knocked over their usual water sources. She said pets needed access to shady places and that rabbits, guinea pigs and birds should be kept inside on hot days, with their cages well away from windows and sunny spots. Family holiday support School holiday support is available for families in and around Melton with a number of free programs scheduled for January. The Children and Parenting Support Service (CaPSS) is running two free creative programs to assist families in financial hardship. The first program will be held on January 17 and 19 in conjunction with Bunnings Warehouse in Melton West. The other, an arts and crafts-based program, will be run at the Melton South Community Centre on Monday, January 22. Parenting support practitioner with the Salvation Army, Mollie Roberts, said: “We are passionate about extending our program to the wider community, with a goal to ensure that every parent who needs our assistance is
aware of how to access it and is confident in doing so. We find school holiday programs are a great way to network and get a feel for the community needs. “Our aim is to strengthen family relationships through supporting parents and carers in their role, through creative and interesting programs in group and individual settings.” The two programs aim to help parents and children have fun while bonding and connecting through creativity in a relaxed environment. The CaPSS is running a Young Parents Playgroup every Tuesday at the Melton Youth Centre. Details: www.capss.org.au Dewi Sherry

MY PLACE Dennis Wright is passionate about the Melton community and its future. The Kurunjang resident of nearly 40 years talks to Esther Lauaki.
How long have you lived in the area? Moved into our new home in Melton South in March, 1977 – dirt roads and septic tank – fantastic! In October, 1988, we moved north of Centenary Avenue into Kurunjang Drive and we are still here. What are you passionate about? March this year we have been in Melton 40 years – I say to people, “I’m nearly a local!” I get annoyed when I hear other “Meltonians” bagging the city and complaining about living here. Move out if you don’t like it! Yes, there are things that need improving and fixing, but, hey, every community has its share of problems. One of the best things was when the bypass opened and the town became a real community – up until then that No 8 Ballarat Highway divided the town. What I really would like to see some action on is poker machines – some $60 million in losses in this city last year. Melton can’t afford that sort of drainage of hard-earned wages out of the city and they want to increase the number of machines – because our population has increased. We need to stop this madness. Tell me about your involvement in the community? I opened my own accounting practice, Dennis K Wright & Associates, in June, 1985. I would believe that I have, since then and up to now, provided an economical audit/accounting
service to the many clubs, associations, and other voluntary organisations that are here in Melton. Over the years, I have seen first-hand the hundreds, probably thousands of ordinary Melton residents who willingly give of their time and talents so that the footy, cricket, basketball, netball can go ahead, so that the SES and CFA are properly manned, so those with disabilities are provided for and our children can attend pre-schools and kindergartens. My main community involvement has been with firstly the Uniting Church from 1981 until 1992 and the Presbyterian Church from then on to now. Why do you feel like it’s important to be part of this community? As I said before, don’t complain about your community, get out there and become a part of it – be part of the solution, not a problem. What would people be surprised to know about you? They might be surprised to know that, in 1968, at the age of 17, I had my left lung removed and there was no such luck as having a transplant then, so I’ve been running on half capacity for nearly 50 years. What is the best thing about living in Melton? I’ve seen a lot of changes in 40 years, but now we have pretty well all that we need here in Melton. (We could add a hospital – there was one here when we first arrived) and the Melbourne CBD is only 35 minutes away by train and that’s getting better too. Also, our children live here and in Gisborne, so the grandchildren are close.
(Supplied)
What is your connection to Melton? My wife Glenys and I built our first home here in Melton and we’ve raised our three children here.

Second are the multiple covered and blind-sheltered pergolas (one covering a large spa) that could easily host four footy teams – then throw in a gazebo sheltering a mains gas barbecue. Market pace keeps property buyers on a frantic timetable Results of recent research reveal that three-quarters of Australian property buyers believe those in the market today need to make quicker decisions than they did five years ago. Conducted by data and insights company Pureprofile and canvassing 1000 Australians, the survey asked respondents about property purchasing experiences in the past three years of themselves or family and friends.
‘‘
Australians need faster home loans to keep up with - Anthony Baum the market
’’
The answers revealed buyers believe the current hot market doesn’t give them the luxury of time to do the usual inspections and research or to make carefully considered decisions. In fact, 44 per cent of respondents reported that they, or people they know well, made an offer on a property the same day as a first inspection. Nearly a third made an offer prior to auction date. Nearly half revealed they didn’t obtain building inspections, strata reports or pest reports before making offers on properties. Anthony Baum, founder and chief executive of an Australian lending platform, says that regardless of whether the market slows down further than present (and signs are already here), the past few years have changed vendor and agent expectations – and, in turn, changed buyer experiences. “I can’t see the accelerated pace between choosing a property, making an offer, having it accepted and exchanging contracts slowing down any time soon,” he says.
Buyers believe the current hot market doesn’t give them the luxury of time to do the usual inspections. (iStock) “Australians need faster home loans to keep up with the market. Now more than ever, buyers can’t afford to wait 22 days to have their home loan approved; they are expected to act immediately to avoid missing out to the next person in line.”
Mr Baum believes that in this digitised age, automated home loan processes can significantly speed up what is normally a lengthy human process. He says 22-minute (not 22-day) loan approvals are now available in the lending marketplace,
bringing the industry into the 21st century. Home buyers can find information about these processes on line. Do solid research to ensure what’s right for you, though. Carole Levy

SPORT Darley’s women’s program a kick in the right direction It’s exciting times for Darley Football Club, with the Devils to field a women’s side for the first time next season. Senior women’s football operations manager Mel O’Rourke said it was an exciting time for the club. “We initially had a youth girls side four years ago,” she said. “We extended it to junior girls and the natural progression is having a side for players graduating from the youth girls. “We’ve had about 12 girls who have gone elsewhere in the last four years as we haven’t had somewhere for them to go. “I believe a handful will come back as they bleed black and white.” The club didn’t waste any time in appointing experienced Jack Hanneysee as the side’s first coach.
Hanneysee has coached both youth girls and women’s at Bacchus Marsh and this year he was an assistant coach at the Sunbury Kangaroos. He was also a development coach with the AFL Goldfields women’s interleague side this year. O’Rourke said they were lucky to have him. “He’s a huge asset for the club,” she said. “He’s hit the ground running and has a really good skill-set. “He’s got a tactical game plan and is great with the girls.” The Devils have more than 20 players who have expressed interest in joining the women’s side. O’Rourke said they are keen to have good numbers and are still looking for more players of all abilities. They are also after volunteers to help out in a number of roles and sponsors.
O’Rourke said there had already been a lot of community support for the side. The side will play in the AFL Goldfields competition, most likely starting in division 2. “We’ve been building partnerships with the community and schools,” O’Rourke said. The Devils had their first training session on Friday. Their next training session is on Wednesday at Darley Park between 6-7.30pm. More information on the Devils women’s side can be found on the club’s Facebook page. Tara Murray

Lions’ lower order rallies By Tara Murray Melton scored an important win against Yarraville in the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association north west competition at the weekend. With two tough matches to come before the Christmas break, a win against the Eagles was vital in the Lions’ plans to stay in the top six. It wasn’t the perfect performance, but the Lions found a way with both the bat and ball to get the job done. Batting first, the Lions found themselves in trouble at 6-60. Not for the first time this season one of the Lions’ middle and lower order got the job done. The Lions managed 201. Coach Nathan Geisler was thrilled with how the players responded. “We know we bat deep and it’s not ideal to rely on them a lot of the time,” he said. “But it’s good we know they can make the runs when we need them to. “Jake Thornton-Gielen batted really well and Matt Stead, who hasn’t had a lot of opportunities, played well and Jonesy [Brad Jones] made a 50. “In the end we scrambled to 200.” Thornton-Gielen made 69 and Stead chipped in with 27. The Eagles survived unscathed on Saturday night to finish 0-18 at stumps. Things didn’t look good early for the Lions on Sunday, with the Eagles cruising at 1-92 and then 2-144. From there it was a change of fortunes – the Lions took 8-40 to bowl the Eagles out for 184. Geisler said they thought they were in trouble early on. Stead was the star with the ball taking 4-9 off six overs, including the wicket of David Morgan, who made 72. “We thought we had to get early wickets to have a chance as their top-order batsmen do a lot of the work,” Geisler said. “It didn’t happen that way. “Steady got six wickets against them last time, so he wishes he could play against them every week. He had a really good game.” Brad Jones also got four wickets. Jones has the equal most wickets this season so far in the north west top grade. Geisler said the win was even more satisfying after their match the previous weekend had the second day washed out. The Lions had made 3-329 on day one. The third-placed Lions have a tough ask ahead in the two one-dayers before Christmas. They face an undefeated Williamstown side on Saturday, followed by a match up with second-placed Plenty Valley the week after. Good results in both these games could set up the Lions’ season.
Jake Thornton-Gielen steadied Melton’s middle order. (Shawn Smits)
“If we can pick up a win in both matches, if not at least one, that will set us up heading into the new year,” Geisler said. “Williamstown has a lot of depth and Plenty Valley knocked off Brunswick quite convincingly, and we all thought they were the
team to beat. It’ll give us another chance to test where we are at.” The Lions’ Women’s Victoria Premier Cricket seconds side defeated Brighton District 58-57 in their T20 match at MacPherson Park. Briony Polkinghorne top-scored on 28.
Positive sharks circle finals Hillside isn’t content to rest on an Essendon District Football League division 1 appearance, with the Sharks keen to make further inroads. The Sharks finished second before being knocked out of the finals in straight sets, but it was huge inroads for the side which made division 1 finals for the first time. New director of football Darren Mantynen said the playing group was keen to build on what they did this year. “The expectations are right up there,” he said. “We want to win at least one final. We’re in good shape and we’ve maintained most of the core group of players. “There’s been really good buy-in since Steve Burns took over as coach. The guys really want to have a crack.” The Sharks re-signed their core group of players before the season ended, with only one or two players not returning. With the playing group locked away, the Sharks targeted a few gaps they thought they had. One area was at centre half-forward. Mitch Church will fill that void coming across from EDFL division 1 rival Westmeadows. Mantynen said Church had been someone that had given them trouble when they played against him. “He will take the heat off Brandon Coletta,” he said. “That was one area we felt like we fell down was across half-forward. Mitch has been good since he turned up. “He lives around the corner and knows a lot of the guys.” Raafat Rachrache joins the club from the Northern Football League. Mantynen said Rachrache wanted to repay the faith of the club, after initially looking to play for them 12 months ago. Sam Stephens is the other key signing. He’ll add another big body in the midfield. Mantynen said while there was room for more signings they were likely to stick with the guys they already have. “It would have to depend on whose name comes across,” he said. “We want to stick with the core group of players we have. There’s a lot of kids at the club who deserve a crack.” The Sharks will start their 2018 season against arch rival Taylors Lakes in the two side’s traditional Good Friday clash. SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
Review recommends no major changes to leagues The Riddell District and Ballarat football netball leagues will remain in their current format following a review by the region’s governing body, AFL Goldfields. AFL Goldfields looked at four leagues in the region and decided that all four would remain as is, despite general acceptance by clubs across the region that it will be extremely difficult for all current clubs to remain viable. In August, draft findings of the review had recommended splitting Central Highlands and forming a new league consisting of teams from the CHFL and Maryborough Castlemaine District League. AFL Goldfields decided against that plan in the face of difficulties establishing an alternative competition. AFL Goldfields will review the RDFNL
competition again in 2020, with several clubs expressing a strong desire to see the competition split into two divisions. A two-tier competition would likely include some BFNL eastern clubs and possibly Gisborne. The report named Gisborne, Melton, Melton South and Sunbury Lions as clubs which might consider rejoining a reformed division 1 competition in the medium to long term. The report also stated that AFL Goldfields believes that through natural growth, junior clubs Eynesbury and Gisborne Giants would eventually evolve into senior clubs – another reason to have a two-tier competition. The BFNL will stay at 11 teams, with AFL Goldfields not pursuing a move by Sebastopol to the Central Highlands league.
The long term future of the Burras in the BFNL is dependent on them meeting onand off-field achievement targets set by AFL Goldfields next year. The competition still has an uneven number of teams and the report expressed AFL Goldfields’ desire to have another team join the competition. Rupertswood and Buninyong were named as best possibilities. Despite Rupertswood expressing a clear desire to stay in the RDFNL and not switch competitions when the draft was released, AFL Goldfields will still pursue them. If Rupertswood doesn’t make the move, AFL Goldfields will consider another RDFNL team to make the switch to give the BFNL a split of six eastern and six Ballarat-based teams.
Other recommendations in the report include: • AFL Goldfields looking to form a netball umpires association. • Working with local councils to build additional netball courts. • Establishing a player points system for A-grade netball. • Football salary caps to remain at current levels. • Working with the 14 clubs interested in having women’s football teams. • Increasing the number of divisions in the Ballarat competition. • AFL Goldfields to investigate ways to reduce the workload of club volunteers. Bacchus Marsh Gold came away with a two-shot win against Kyneton in the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top grade on Saturday. The two teams split the four rinks, with Gold claiming the win 92 (14)-90 (4). Bacchus Marsh’s second side, the Blue team, almost pulled off an upset against ladder leaders Kyneton Golf. Golf eventually winning 89 (14)-86 (4). Gisborne and Lancefield were the other winners. In division 2, Kyneton, Kyneton Golf and Macedon won their matches, while Diggers Rest and Woodend finished 65 shots a piece. Diggers Rest got the win.

Melton was involved in the match of the round in Bowls Victorian pennant division 1, section 1 on Saturday against Altona 2. Looking to cement its spot in the top four, Melton had to settle for a draw with the two teams finishing 74 (9) apiece. Melton remains in fourth spot on 80. Melton plays Fitzroy Victoria in the final round before Christmas.

Roshan Anuruddha is quickly making an impact for Darley. (Shawn Smits)
Stunning ton lifts Lions By Tara Murray A spectacular individual performance from Roshan Anuruddha turned what was looking like a disastrous day for Darley into a good one in the Ballarat Cricket Association. Facing ladder leaders Golden Point, the Lions were in all sorts of trouble early on at 6-30 and with their experienced batsmen back in the shed. Anuruddha, in just his second first XI game and third game for the club, came in at No.8 with the task ahead of him. He and Ryan Ali pushed the score to 92 before the loss of another two wickets had the Lions in real trouble at 9-112. Anuruddha and David Hoey continued to fight on – the Lions were eventually dismissed for 200. Anuruddha was the last man out, making 114 from 214 balls in an innings that included nine fours. Hoey finished three not out. Lions coach Michael Alexander was thrilled 48 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 12, 2017
to have a score of 200 to defend after the position they had earlier found themselves in. “It was an outstanding finish in the end,” he said. “It’s quite a reasonable total to defend. Being 6-30, you’re scrounging to get a half-decent score. We got a good partnership and then lost a couple of wickets. “We put on 90-odd for the 10th wicket partnership to get us to 200.” Alexander said it was a stunning performance from Anuruddha. “It’s only his second time batting for us,” he said. “We’re still trying to work out the best batting line-up with him in it. He showed us yesterday that he can come in under pressure and put together a really good knock.” Alexander also praised Hoey, who came in at number 11 and did a job hanging around with Anuruddha. The Lions had three overs to bowl at Golden Point at the end of the day, and got off to the perfect start by taking the wicket of Andrew Falkner. Matt Cape was the bowler.
Golden Point will resume at 1-10. “That’s a bonus,”Alexander said. “We’ll now take the momentum into next week.” With the Lions sitting in sixth place, a win this weekend would be massive in their fight for a finals spot. Alexander said going into Christmas on a winning note would help set up their season. The Lions are 2-2, with both losses coming to Wendouree. “We’re playing the top, undefeated team,” he said. “A win is critical for us to be 3-2 heading into Christmas. “That would be really positive for us … we play [fourth-placed] Mt Clear after the break. It’s an interesting season at this stage.” Darley’s second side is in control against Ballan. The Lions made the low score of 146, but fought back with the ball to have Ballan in trouble at 4-8. The Lions will play a T20 match this week, facing Wendouree on Tuesday night. The Lions are 1-0 in that competition.
Bacchus Marsh has claimed first innings points against Sunbury United in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. The Bulls bowled United out for 66. Madushanka Ekanayake took 5-39. The Bulls finished on 9-163. Diggers Rest Bulla has already conceded first innings points against Romsey. The Burras were bowled out for 68, before Romsey made 1-81. Romsey sent the Burras back in and they will resume at 2-20. St Anthonys faces a big chase in the B-grade competition against Wallan. The Magpies made 374. Eynesbury is 1-26 in reply to East Sunbury’s 152.
VTCA
It was a day to forget for Melton South Royals in Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s west A1 competition. Looking to cement their spot in the top four, the Royals batsmen were left to rue their game against Seabrook. After restricting Seabrook to 129, the Royals were bowled out for 52. Melton Centrals remain winless after losing to Williamstown Colts. Centrals could only manage 9-124 in reply to Colts 8-142. In north A1, Sydenham-Hillside accounted for East Coburg. Caroline Springs’ match against Barkley Street Uniting was abandoned. FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Melton & Moorabool Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly
