100 reasons to celebrate A long line of family members is getting ready to party with Maria Gebing. The soon-to-be centenarian’s four children, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren will help her celebrate her milestone in Melton later this month. Mrs Gebing arrived in Australia in 1958 from Holland with her husband and they settled in Sunshine for many years. She spread herself between raising children and working at a chocolate factory before retiring to Willowbrae Nursing Home in Kurunjang. “I ate a lot of chocolate,” she said. “There’s no secret to a long life. I never smoked or drank. I stayed healthy. I was always very busy.” Esther Lauaki

An additional 40 four-wheel drive vans, fitted with winches and bull bars, will be deployed to regional areas from mid-2018 to provide off-road driving capability. Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt last year said that more police were “urgently required” in the Melton area. “Our members in the Melton police service area have been desperately under-resourced for a significant period of time and they’re facing … challenges in a growth corridor,” Sergeant Gatt said. At the time of the announcement of more frontline police, Sergeant Gatt said that while the allocation of extra uniform police officers would be beneficial, the additional support to the sexual offences and child abuse investigation team and criminal investigation unit would assist in reducing crime through investigative means.

More front-line police officers will take to Melton streets this month. Almost 240 additional police will be deployed across the North-West Metro region which takes in Melton, Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Whittlesea, as part of the first wave of 300 new police funded in last year’s state budget. Melton and Caroline Springs will get an extra 16 front-line police as part of the deployment. The crime investigation unit and the sexual offences and child abuse investigation team based in the Brimbank and Melton police services area will get an extra nine and five detectives respectively. The extra police will be deployed to some of the state’s fastest-growing suburbs with the highest needs, based on a staffing allocation model developed by Victoria Police and the Police Association. The roll-out will be supported by a fleet of 290 new vehicles launched last week by Police Minister Lisa Neville. Ms Neville said new divisional vans, to hit the road in Melbourne’s west from this month, would support the biggest ever investment in front-line police members. “The new divisional vans will ensure our police officers are kept safe on the road while they’re patrolling and protecting the Victorian community,” Ms Neville said. “Expect to see bigger and more secure divisional vans hit the streets – set to support the hundreds of new police being rolled out across the state.”
She said it was hoped the new fleet would provide front-line police officers with better vantage points when they were patrolling the streets. Existing security and safety features would be included in the new vehicles, including video monitoring and recording of detainees and two-way communication with detainees in the rear pod.

Cancer mum reeling from burglary A terminally ill mother has chased a group of teenage thieves who allegedly tried to steal her car out of the driveway of her north-west home. Kellie McElligott, 48, woke to find three teenagers raiding her Ascot Vale home for her car keys in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The mother of three, who has ovarian cancer, said her dream had always been to own a Mercedes Benz. Three months ago, her husband bought one for her. “I’m suffering from cancer – he decided to buy me one because I wanted it all my life,”
Kellie McElligott. (Channel Nine)
Ms McElligott told Nine News. After discovering the thieves, Ms McElligott woke her husband, Gerard, and the couple chased the alleged offenders, who fled the house empty-handed. “I yelled at them, ‘What are you doing, get out’ and then I called out for my husband to come,” she said. “It’s just amazing when adrenalin kicks in what you can do.” Mr McElligott said the couple was still reeling from the attempted robbery. “We’ve gone through enough – we don’t need this,” he said. Police believe the same teenagers were
involved in another aggravated burglary at an Essendon house an hour later. In that incident, it is alleged two teenagers broke into the Lorraine Street house about 5.30am. Various items are alleged to have been stolen including phones, purses and the owner’s car. A 17-year-old male from Burnside Heights and a 15-year-old male from Kurunjang have been charged with home invasion and theft of motor vehicle. Both have been remanded to appear in a children’s court at a later date. The Age

Car fires spark hunt for arsonists
Sweet taste of success A Bacchus Marsh woman had her 10 minutes of fame last week at a national theatre festival. Leanne Sampson-Bowden made her directorial debut at the Short and Sweet little theatre festival in Sydney which started last Thursday. The 10-minute play, Psych Nick, is about a man who walks into a psychologist’s office on Christmas Eve claiming to be Jesus suffering depression. Sampson-Bowden said she was excited that
Psych Nick had been selected as a wildcard entry into the festival – which showcases short theatre, dance, cabaret and comedy works. “This is my first play direction but I have just completed writing, producing and directing three short films in the last 18 months,” she said. “I originally came from a theatre background, doing many amateur performances back in the ’80s. Since then I have been working on my writing and acting.”
Sampson-Bowden said she hoped to put a spotlight on an issue close to her heart. “I suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome and depression, so on top of all that and being quite senior now, I feel it is a real feat I am achieving and still pursuing my creative goals,” she said. “Psych Psych Nick has a very international feel and it’s about breaking down barriers … I hope it will work well and be entertaining.”
Police are on the hunt for two people in relation to four car fires in Melton in the past two months. Melton Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the suspicious fires, the first of which took place in Kurunjang about 10.15pm on December 3 when a Holden Commodore was set alight in a driveway on Roderick Drive. A Honda Civic was set alight in the driveway of a Perry Street house on December 17, about 2.05am. On January 18, a Holden Commodore was set alight in the driveway of a Henry Street house about 9am. Security footage shows a flash of light coming from a Fay Street house before two people are seen running from the scene where a Holden Commodore was set alight in a driveway on January 24 about 2.28am. No one was injured in any of the fires. Investigators have released the CCTV of the two people they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries. Anyone who has further information about the fires is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at crimestoppersvic.com.au Esther Lauaki

Busy weekend for police blitz
Eynesbury local Lyndall West at the reserve. (Marco De Luca)
Dry argument for suburb By Esther Lauaki Eynesbury residents fear Melton council has forgotten about their neighbourhood as they watch lush greenery wither away. A number of residents are rallying the council to maintain the reserve at Benalla Avenue and Bendigo Drive as well as other community parks around the suburb. Dean Hosking said to leave the public spaces in their current condition was “unacceptable”. “When I moved to Eynesbury two years ago, the estate was just beautiful,” Mr Hosking said. “The gardens were well maintained, the grass
was watered, green and lush … over the last two years I have slowly watched Melton council forget about us and let this once beautiful suburb, turn to a disgusting, dry sink hole. “In almost two years, sprinklers in the main areas of Eynesbury have not been switched on.” Danny Psaila, an Eynesbury resident of six years, said the reserve “has never been this bad”. “It was only a few months ago the council invested in adding top soil to this reserve only not to follow it up and left it to die,” Mr Psaila said. “This community is only a shell of what it used to be and to know the infrastructure to
make it green again is sitting there not being used, it’s very disappointing.” Council’s parks co-ordinator Wayne Kratsis assured residents that the area had not been forgotten and that recent high temperatures has taken a toll on the plants. “The irrigation continues to run in this reserve at present, we will increase this to assist in greening up the park,” Mr Kratsis wrote to residents. “The hot summer this season has taken a toll on some of our reserves, we expect this to improve over the coming days with some natural rainfall forecast.”
Speedsters, unregistered vehicles and drivers using their mobile phones were the target of a recent police blitz during the Australia Day long weekend. Highway patrol members detected more than 70 speeding offences, 61 unregistered vehicles and 51 mobile phone offences in the Brimbank police service area, which includes Melton, during the four days of Operation Amity last month. In Moorabool, speeding was the most detected offence with 64 drivers caught. Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said the results were incredibly disappointing for police. “Sadly, three families are now mourning the loss of a loved one due to fatalities on our roads,” Assistant Commissioner Weir said. “These tragic deaths, coupled with the results from Operation Amity, are very concerning to police.” A 44-year-old woman died after the car she was driving crashed into a tree in Toolern Vale on January 28. Assistant Commissioner Weir said there were also “far too many people making dangerous and illegal choices” by driving when they were either drug or alcohol affected. There were 37 drivers detected either drunk or drug affected in the Brimbank service area during the Australia Day long weekend. Esther Lauaki

Collectors and motor enthusiasts are gearing up for next weekend’s Ballan Great Vintage Rally and Tractor Pull. The rally has been running for more 15 years and is one of the major events for the Ballan District Vintage Machinery and Vehicle Club. Club treasurer Ray Meadows said vintage car clubs from around Victoria flock to the annual event where there will be sheep shearing, stationary engine exhibits, model trains, handcrafts and entertainment. “I grew up on the farm and I’ve loved tractors and machinery since I was young,” he said. “I started collecting from there and have 12 tractors now.”
Event co-ordinator Jason Palmer said the event was expected to attract up to 2000 visitors from around the region. “There’s plenty of action happening on the day and various activities for everyone to enjoy,” Mr Palmer said. “Our features this year are Holden products and two-stroke machinery, along with various other exhibits as well.” The event is on next Saturday (February 18) from 9.30am to 4pm at Ballan racecourse. Adults $10, family $20 and children under 14 years are admitted free. Esther Lauaki

Melton college is on the rise By Esther Lauaki Melton Secondary College students and teachers aim to build on recent achievements as they head into the new school year. The school’s most recent year 12 results showed a significant turnaround in VCE scores, with its median study score jumping four points, from about 23 to 27, in the past four years. While the score was not the highest in the state, Melton Secondary College principal
David Reynolds said he was thrilled with the school’s progress. “There has been a steady growth in our VCE scores,” Mr Reynolds said. “They’ve risen from 23.5 to 27.5 – and that’s a significant increase, one that we are very proud of. The state mean is 28 … so we are very much on the right track.” Mr Reynolds said that the percentage of students with subject scores of 40 or more went up to eight per cent of students in the past four years. Three students received ATAR scores of more than 90 per cent last year.
He said the school would continue to build on the achievements of the past few years. “Certainly, our results are getting stronger,” Mr Reynolds said. “We have a focus on academic growth for our students and we have a strong VCE and VCAL program and we expect to continue that success into this year.” Information: bit.ly/2EDZ5PE Melton Secondary College ATAR high achievers Betty Mazengia, Kaitlyn Bibby and Brianna Argall. Bridge halfway there The latest stage of the Melton Highway level crossing removal in Sydenham has been unveiled, with traffic running along the southern side of the new bridge, after work started almost a year ago. As part of level crossing removal works across Melbourne, a new six-lane bridge is being built across the train line at Melton Highway in Sydenham. Traffic has run exclusively on the northern side of the highway since May, 2017, while the southern side was constructed. The southern side of the new bridge is now complete and was opened on February 1, with traffic gradually shifting to the new section. Pedestrians and cyclists have switched to the new shared path on the bridge to cross the rail lines safely. There are now two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane open on the southern section of the new bridge.
Work will now begin on the northern side of the bridge, removing the level crossing completely. The project is expected to be completed late this year. The Level Crossing Removal Authority is urging motorists to be patient in the transition stages of the new bridge as users get used to the new conditions. There will be three lanes of traffic in each direction when the project is completed. The level crossing is considered one of the state’s most dangerous and a major cause of peak hour traffic chaos for the road’s 38,000 daily users, with boom gates previously down for about a quarter of the morning peak. Ewen McRae The latest stage of the Melton Highway level crossing removal is open to traffic. (Dennis Manktelow)

MY PLACE Lanre Adebayo wants to help shape Melton’s future by sharing his experiences. The Melton West resident talks to Esther Lauaki. What is your connection to Melton? My wife is from Australia … we moved here from the UK to be closer to her family. Melton is where my wife, Merryn, is from. How long have you lived in the area? We arrived in November last year. You have a background in defence. What was your role? I was a program manager for the Ministry of Defence in the UK for about nine years. What are you passionate about? I’ve very passionate about cultural inclusion. In the UK, I was the chair of a minority, ethnic, multi-cultural community group. I would go out into the communities, into schools and secondary schools, and advise or guide them on various issues from a minority’s perspective. How does Melton strike you? I like the environment, the community. The people are nice. The perception from the outside of the area is that Melton is not a good place because of crime and gangs. I’ve written to police talking about what I want to do to help “African crime” in the area. I can’t change that on my own, but I want to try and change that perception of Melton. I am someone who asks questions of our community leaders: “What more can be done in terms of education of our young kids?” (Dennis Manktelow)
If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? More youth engagement programs for all, regardless of race. I’d like to see more people who go into schools and educate our young on how to engage in society.

Anna and Alex McKenzie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last Wednesday. (Mark Wilson) Inset: The happy couple on their wedding day. (Supplied)
Love’s an adventure Music and candlelight brought Anna and Alexander McKenzie together years ago and there has rarely been a dull moment since. The Kurunjang residents, who celebrated their 60th anniversary last Wednesday, met in 1955 at a church carols by candlelight event in Dandenong, where they later married. “For me, it was love at first sight,” Mrs McKenzie said. “We were both young – I was 20 and my husband was a bit younger when we met. I had not been in Australia that long, coming from Holland, and my language capabilities were not that crash hot. “We became good friends … and that’s where it started.” The McKenzies set out on a caravanning honeymoon and eventually settled in Lorne
before moving to Melton 32 years ago. Their marriage has been full of adventure. “We can look back and we’ve had really tremendous days,” Mrs McKenzie said. “My husband was a commercial pilot and we’ve done all sorts of things together like water skiing, boating, fishing and flying. “I’m a great believer in, ‘If you want to do something in your life, do it’. That’s what we did – we had a go at anything at all. “I can’t believe where the years have gone. It’s absolutely astonishing.” The Mckenzies celebrated their diamond anniversary with their two children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A glass roof on entry floods the front of this house with light. Every space in the large family residence has been touched with an extra flourish to create a distinctly warm and refined feel throughout. The six bedrooms have built-in robes, the main bedroom with en suite and walk-in robe. Other features include bespoke drapes, two large bathrooms, big spaces, built-in cabinetry and beautifully tended gardens. The centrepiece of the open-plan meals and lounge area is the kitchen with walk-in pantry, stainless-steel appliances, ceramic cooktop and stone benches. The builder took advantage of the wide block to create large rooms and thoroughfares. Timeless kerb appeal, three living zones, a double garage and a paved outdoor entertaining area are all set in a quiet court location close to schools.
A brick veneer facade with good-sized windows and a security door, together with a neat front garden ready for you to personalise, creates a good first impression. This great unit, set within a development of similar properties, is in the heart of Melton and close to shops, schools, the doctor’s clinic, banks and public transport. The split-system in the lounge easily cools the whole unit. The kitchen has granite benchtops and timber cabinetry. Tiling continues from the kitchen into the open-plan spaces beyond including a meals area and lounge where doors open to an unexpectedly large outdoor area with a food garden, lawn and dining space. Two bedrooms are both carpeted and have built-in robes, one with two-way access to the bathroom. Rented for $1086 a month with the lease expiring in May 2018, it’s a great investment or perfect opportunity for those wanting to downsize.

Hard-wearing and practical with room for everyone, this four bedroom house has been well-maintained. Set on about 797 square metres the property includes a bungalow with a kitchenette in the generous garden. The main house offers a large kitchen with good storage overlooking the meals area and lounge room. Three of the four bedrooms have built-in robes. There is a separate formal-style living zone which would be great for entertaining. A third living space/rumpus is great for children. There’s evaporative cooling, gas heating, solar panelling and the house is NBN ready. The double carport with roller door, a garden shed plus tool shed all add to the appeal.
On a large allotment of roughly 728 square metres, this property has a good-looking facade and big undercover concreted pergola area. This one can be anything you want it to be. Renovate and transform, or even develop the large backyard (STCA). The floor-plan includes three bedrooms, the main with en suite and walk-in robe. There is a good-sized L-shaped living room and kitchen. The easy walks to Woodgrove Shopping Centre and both primary and secondary schools are a handy bonus. Other features include a split-system, gas heating and a lock-up carport. Here’s a great opportunity for those who are handy and or perhaps want to flip a property in a great location.

Owner built and with considerable thought given to practical liveability and broadly appealing aesthetics, this is a property destined to have families and entertainers among its admirers. It comes loaded with those telling extras that elevate it above the ordinary – soft-close 2pac cabinetry all through, two sets of timber-framed stacker doors, Crimsafe security doors, TV points in all rooms, extra insulation and extra-deep strip footings, beautifully designed alfresco areas and a six-square garage chockfull of sliding-door closets.

Private sale On about 620 square metres, the house has entry to a feature-tiled hallway, to the right of which is the main bedroom. This has natural-timber plantation shutters, a large walk-in fitted robe and a smart en suite with walk-in shower. A carpeted open study, farther along the hall, has an expansive work station and glass-fronted display cabinets – another example of those “extras”. Remaining fitted bedrooms, with taupe carpet and timber blinds, share a rear hallway with the main bathroom featuring walk-in shower and extra storage; a
separate toilet; and a great laundry with a stack of storage including pull-out hampers. The kitchen, in the midst of a large living hub, has a very generous and well-designed walk-in pantry – plumbed for a sink if wanted – plus plenty of white 2pac cupboards topped with stone-look laminate, a white glass splashback, a dishwasher and Westinghouse 900mm cooker. Stacker doors in both family and meals zones sweep back to reveal, firstly, a huge pergola above sealed aggregate edged with tropical gardens; and, secondly, a covered deck housing a five-person spa beautified

Out back, a garden shed sits near a brick-paved patio rimmed with vegie boxes, while a veritable orchard promises abundant harvests – find apple, cherry, fig, olive, peach, pear and citrus trees, plus passionfruit and kiwifruit vines. Other treats include double glazing on bedroom windows, ducted heating, evaporative cooling, 12 solar panels and water tank. The remote-controlled garage is drive-through and has internal access. 37 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 6, 2018
SPORT Lions’ field of dreams By Tara Murray Melton made the most of making the field in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s north-west competition. The Lions are yet to play a full match this year due to rain and wet pitches and the top order was keen to get out on the park against Altona. The Lions made 8-232 from their overs, with plenty of contributions. Coach Nathan Geisler said it was a good day. “The outfield was a bit slow, but we’ve still got 230 on the board,” he said. “We were disappointed we couldn’t get on last week and have a bat. “We batted well and Kirky [David Kirk] had a good day making 84. “Most of the top order got starts. We’re right in the game and Altona would be thinking the same thing.” While Kirk top-scored, Ash Sweet finished 52 not out and skipper Ben MacRae made 30. Sweet will miss week two of the match, selected to represent a Victorian indigenous side so Geisler will step in to play week two. A win is vital for both teams. The Lions are looking to stay on top of the ladder after their lead was reduced last week when the side was awarded three points for a draw in it’s game against Ivanhoe. A win for Altona will help its finals hopes. “They will come hard and have a few key batters,” Geisler said. “If we can win our next three games we can’t be moved from top spot.” Geisler said they plan to settle their line-up in the next couple of weeks with a couple of spots still up for grabs. “The number three spot is up for grabs,” he said. “We’ve got options that can go through there, but we’ve got four or five guys who would rather bat at four, five or six.” Meanwhile, the club is awaiting the outcome of its appeal of the result against Ivanhoe. The second day of play was cancelled because of a wet pitch. Lions vice-president Anthony Gale said they wanted answers as to why they didn’t play despite the perfect weather on the day. Under VSDCA rules, the covering of all pitches is compulsory for all first and second XI games and all final games, unless otherwise notified. “The wicket was wet and despite it being warm we couldn’t get a start,” Gale said. “We’re checking with the executive and if they feel like the processes haven’t been followed, then there might be a penalty,” he said. “It could be just getting an explanation.” For the verdict of Monday’s night appeal, go to www.starweekly.com.au/sports
Burras keen to atone A high degree of motivation is driving Diggers Rest during the Riddell District Football League pre-season. After a disappointing end to last season, with the senior and reserves sides knocked out in the preliminary finals and under-18.5s in the elimination final, the club is looking to atone. New senior coach Jamie Lobb said their pre-season had been strong. The Burras resumed training two weeks ago and had a training camp at the weekend. “I think the whole club was disappointed with how we finished last year and wants to make amends,” he said. “It’s been a good pre-season with everyone putting in. We’ve definitely had good consistent numbers – around the 35 mark at training. It makes things easier.” Changes have been few, with most of the senior side returning. Youngster Chris Lawton has moved on, signing with Essendon District Football League club Airport West, while Beejay Kilty is another out. The Burras have welcomed back a couple of players while looking to add more midfield depth. Col Laurie, who played in the Northern Territory last season, and Tom Evans, who was playing with Rockbank, have returned. Joining them at the Burras is Mathew Medcraft and Jesse Flannery. Medcraft spent last season playing with Port Douglas alongside Laurie. Before that he played with the Sunbury Lions, winning their best and fairest in 2015. Lobb said Medcraft was a good get for the club. “At this stage, we’ve lost two players and picked up four,” he said. “The core group is the same and we looked to fill areas we lacked in. “It was pretty easy to get him [Medcraft] to come across to the club. He’s got a lot of good mates at the club and we’ve all seen what he can do.” Lobb said younger players such as Kyle Owens and James McMahon would be pushing for more senior opportunities. The Burras will kick off their season on April 14 under lights against Romsey. They will have practice matches against North Heidelberg, Hillside and Sunbury Lions.

Resurrected Thoroughbreds ready to take to the court Melton Thoroughbreds’ return to the Big V women’s competition ramped up on Sunday, as the side took to the court in its first practice match. The Thoroughbreds haven’t fielded a women’s side in the Big V since 2010 and have been working hard in anticipation of their return in division 2. Thoroughbreds coach Lauren Olcorn said there had been a lot of hard work put in over the past couple of months. “We’ve got practice matches lined up for every weekend in February,” she said. “It’s all been going really well with a team of girls working hard. “There’s been the extra efforts to get us where we need to be. There’s been extra fitness sessions and we can’t wait to get on the court.” Olcorn said they would use the practice 38 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 6, 2018
matches to get an idea of line-ups and positions they could use throughout the season. The coach, who captained the Thoroughbreds 2008 division 2 championship, said they had established a talented young list with plenty of experience. Gabby Eaton, Channy Paris-Webb, Natalee Eaton and Carissa Lock, who all previously played for the Thoroughbreds, were among the early signings. They were joined by Emily Attard and Caitlyn Spence, who will make their Big V debuts. Olcorn said they had more than 25 players attend trials. “We had good numbers,” she said. “We were able to secure some experienced girls who had played elsewhere. We’re still quite a young team. “We’ve got a three to five-year plan put

together and we’re on track with that plan.” Molly Young, who was part of Keilor Thunder’s women’s division 1 grand final side, has joined the team. Jenna and Lauren Conroy will return to Melton after spending the past
two seasons with Coburg Giants. Rebecca Marshall, who was part of Sunbury Jets’ state championship set-up and youth league 2 women’s championship side, has also come across. Olcorn said she was excited by the background those four girls provided. “They’re all 25 and under,” she said. “I’m excited by the experiences and knowledge that they bring and the rookies can learn a lot from them. “We’re only going to get stronger from there.” The Thoroughbreds’ next practice match is on Saturday night at Melton Recreation Centre. Entry is free. The Big V season starts the weekend of March 17. Tara Murray

Wagga will remember the Titans There were plenty of laughs and a lot of fun when North Western Titans hosted Wagga in a friendly baseball weekend. With the Titans having the weekend off from Baseball Victoria Summer League commitments, they played Wagga twice on Saturday in a return bout of their visit to Wagga in September as part of its pre-season. Titans Danny Haymes said it was a good opportunity to build a relationship between the two clubs, with a tournament a possibility for later this year. With no points on the line, Haymes took the opportunity to experiment. “It was a fun weekend,” he said. “We mixed up our teams and we didn’t put our strongest side out there for the first game. “We wanted to give some of the other players a chance to get playing experience. “They brought their best side down and it was a good experience.”
The Titans, with most of their second side playing, lost the first game 3-0. In the second game, the Titans started with a stronger side and got out to a 4-0 lead, before again giving other players opportunities. The final score was 4-4. Haymes said the Titans were quite happy with how things went, despite not winning either game. “For us, we weren’t worried about the results,” he said. “Some of the guys who played had never played before, so it was like a recruiting weekend for next season as well. “We could have easily won both games, but we wanted to work on some things and we were comfortable with how it finished.” The fun didn’t stop on Saturday, with the club hosting a “masters and toddlers” game on Sunday. All players over 31 were in the masters’ side and all players under 31 were part of the toddlers’ side.
Haymes said that game was also a lot of fun and the players enjoyed not having to worry about results for a weekend. “We play 18 games in a year and it can be pretty hard,” he said. “We can see the improvement and we know where we are at. We saw a potential squad for next year and it looks pretty promising.” The Titans have three rounds left in the season. The club’s juniors will play finals, which start in two weeks. Haymes said the club already had one eye on next season and was seeking players for the men’s side and looking at having a women’s side for the first time. Tara Murray North Western Titans pitcher Michael McMurrie and Wagga batter Ben Hickey converge during one of the weekend’s friendlies. (Mark Wilson)

Melton Centrals had their second win of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1 season, defeating Williamstown Colts on Sunday. Centrals made 4-163, before restricting the Colts to 7-142. Melton South Royals also won, defeating Williamstown Congs. Royals made 8-135, before bowling the Congs out for 122. Both teams lost their two-day matches on Saturday. In north A1, Caroline Springs picked up two wins for the weekend, while Sydendham-Hillside split its matches.

ARCHIE, JACK AND DANIEL LALOR
Bulls’ band of brothers By Tara Murray Getting the three Lalor brothers in the one place can be difficult. Along with all the normal teenage distractions, the three Bacchus Marsh boys have been travelling the state, and the country, playing cricket. Jack, Daniel and Archie have been selected in Victorian cricket teams and by the end of this month, all three would have represented the state in the past six months. Jack, the oldest of the three, played for Vic Country in the under-19 national championships for a second time last year. “To be honest I felt that there was a bit more added pressure to make more runs,” he said. “When you get to this level it’s more about focusing on your strengths and not worrying about other people or players.” Jack, who plays for Northcote in Victorian Premier Cricket, hopes to finish the season on a high. “It’s been an interrupted season with school and year 12,” he said. “I’d been playing ones all through the season, but was dropped to the twos. “There’s still three more games left, so hopefully I can make some runs and contribute.”
He said it was good to see his younger brothers stepping up and playing at state level. Daniel was selected for the under-15 school sports national championships and named in the Victorian country team which will compete in Queensland, starting this week. He was previously part of the under-12 school sports team. “The carnival is coming up and I can’t wait to get back to school and then go away to Brisbane,” Daniel said. Over summer Daniel represented the Gisborne and District Cricket Association (GDCA) at country week where he led the batting average in his division. He also represented Central Highlands in the state championships, while playing both junior and senior cricket at Bacchus Marsh. After making his first XI debut last season, he’s played the past four games in the top side for Bacchus Marsh. “It’s been really good and heaps of fun,” he said. “ There’s a good group of guys and it makes it easier when you’re surrounded with talent. “Hopefully I’ll get a few more runs and do the best for the team.” Daniel, 15, said he would like to make the move to premier cricket in the next couple of
years and push to be part of more state teams. “I’ll just try and do my best and play the highest standard I can play and am capable of.” Twelve-year-old Archie made it three from three for the boys in state representation when he made the under-12 team. The team competed in January. “It has been good and a great opportunity for myself,” Archie said. “We played in Cobram and finished fifth out of all the states. I did alright, but could have done better.” The all-rounder was also part of the GDCA’s country week under-12 team, which finished third despite being a bottom-age team. As well as his representative cricket, Archie has been juggling playing both junior and senior cricket at Bacchus Marsh. The boys have followed in the footsteps of their father Peter, who still plays for the Bulls. And while two of the boys have lined up beside Peter on the field, Jack has another family cricketing goal in his sights. “The ultimate dream is for the three boys to be one, two and three at Northcote,” he said. And there could still be another Lalor sibling joining the state ranks. Younger sister Ava is a keen cricketer and wants to follow in her brothers footsteps and represent Victoria.
Bacchus Marsh remains on top of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup ladder after defeating Sunbury on Sunday in a one-day clash. It was a big win for the Bulls, who made 8-180 before restricting Sunbury to 115. The Bulls are also in control of their two-day match against the Roar after day one. The Bulls need just eight runs with six wickets in hand.

Two Gisborne and District Cricket Association teams will be stripped of points for playing unregistered players in their round eight McIntyre Cup matches. Gisborne and Diggers Rest Bulla’s sides were served infringement notices for not having lodged registration forms for new players in the correct timeframe. Full story at www. starweekly.com.au/sports
Harness racing
Lazarus broke the track record at Melton’s TabCorp Park on Saturday night. Competing in the Hunter Cup, Lazarus took a second off the track record mile rate for 2760 metres set last season, on his way to the win. His winning time was 3:15.7. The win adds to an impressive resume, with Lazarus now Australasian harness racing’s third richest earner.
Bowls
Melton had a much-needed win in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. The match with Darebin City at the Darebin Rinks went down to the wire, with Melton winning 81 (14)-80 (4). Melton is sixth, 20 points outside the top four. Armstrong’s feat of clay By Lance Jenkinson Shooting sensation Thomas Armstrong has put the icing on the cake of a stellar sporting year, being adjudged the 2017 Don Deeble Rising Star winner. Armstrong was taken aback when his name was read out as the recipient of the prestigious award, named in honour of the late Don Deeble, one of Australia’s greatest baseballers, a pioneer of his sport and a product of Sunshine. The award recognises sporting talent under the age of 21 from Melbourne’s west, including five council areas, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham. Armstrong, from Plumpton, described it as a huge honour to join a list of recipients that includes internationally renowned sports people such as athlete Morgan Mitchell and basketballers Dante Exum and Rachel Jarry, along with recent winners Maddison Rocci, Amelia Mazza-Downie and Dejan Vasiljevic. Armstrong was quick to realise the sporting talent in his company when he arrived at the Allegra Function Venue in St Albans on Wednesday night. “There was such a big range of athletes and sports represented,” Armstrong said. “There was AFL top draft picks, girls that have represented high levels at a number of disciplines, so it was a real honour just to be amongst those kind of people.” Armstrong had success on both the national and international stage last year. The 17-year-old was part of a Victorian team that won at the Australian National Trap Championships with a perfect score of 250 out of 250. Individually, Armstrong won his first national title in the points score competition, beating 500 other competitors with a combined score of 298 of 300 targets hit.

Shooter Thomas Armstrong is the Deeble Rising Star winner for 2017. (Shawn Smits)
Armstrong, a Werribee Victorian Clay Target Shooting Club member, took his talents to Europe later in the year, where he triumphed in the Italian Cup trap competition – an Olympic discipline – then took out a junior world title at the World Universal Trench shooting championships in France by a narrow two targets. “Every shot counts,” Armstrong said. “It all comes down to the practice we put in, we
work on specific targets. It’s also a real credit to mum and dad for taking me everywhere and giving me the opportunity to train on all these different grounds and in different scenarios.” Armstrong is already hard at work in anticipation of a huge 2018 season, starting with a world championship tilt in March. He is keen to raise awareness of the sport in Australia while on his march towards an Olympic Games dream.

Around town in this latest on-road test it typically sat in the nine to 10 litre range, on
the motorway getting it below nine litres per hundred kilometres was simple. It was good to experience a genuine four-wheel drive vehicle doing what it is meant to do – tackle tough going without fuss or high cost.v The addition of the bespoke Alpine premium satellite navigation-cuminfotainment system makes the Mazda BT-50 pickup an even better sound investment than before.

For ages, tradies have been out of tune with modern living, being stuck with tinny entertainment systems in their utes, while navigation invariably gave up the ghost where the bitumen ended. Thanks to the increasing popularity of pickup trucks by non-tradies, owners of new Mazda BT-50s can switch on to the latest in in-car entertainment with the pickup truck climbing to new heights through the addition of a premium satellite navigation-cuminfotainment system. Mazda Australia has got together with the Australian arm of Alpine Electronics to develop the new system, which is standard equipment on XTR and GT grades. My first experience with the new infotainment set-up was in a BT-50 GT Dual Cab automatic 4x4, which comes to market for $52,490, plus on-road costs. Styling dates back to 2012 in keeping with Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom philosophy, when both front and back of the BT-50 came under the stylists’ pen with a straighter radiator grille, redesign of the front and rear lights and new 17-inch alloy wheels on the XTR and GT. XTR models also came with tubular side steps, auto dimming mirrors, rain sensing wipers and auto on/off headlamps, while GT added power mirrors, with heating and folding function, plus turn indicator and privacy glass. The cabin has a passenger car-like look and feel. GT seats are trimmed in black leather, while the driver’s seat has eight-way power adjustment. This is the biggest feature of the Mazda BT-50 we’ve just tested. A larger 8-inch high-resolution colour touchscreen includes a fully integrated reversing camera and an improved satellite navigation system that
