Melton’s war on litter Melton council is cracking down on the municipality’s rubbish problem with the number of illegal dumping and litter notices issued in the past year up 66 per cent on the previous year. In 2017, council officers issued 748 litter notices, up from 451 the previous year, with 105 litter infringements (up from 84) handed out. Council officers have issued 45 notices since July to those suspected of being involved in serious cases of dumping or littering. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the council had no tolerance for litter bugs. “It’s disgusting to think that some people believe they can use our beautiful city as a personal dumping ground,” Cr Turner said. “You can be fined more than $9000 for dumping rubbish. “If you are illegally dumping, you will be caught and you will be fined – it’s as simple as that. “There is absolutely no excuse for illegal dumping.” Close to 800 tonnes of illegally dumped litter is collected in Melton every year. Council officers are investigating 30 individuals and companies after eight litter blitzes in December. Melton residents, including home owners and tenants, receive two free tip passes a year to drop off unwanted hard waste at the Melton Transfer Station. Council also offers hard waste collection from homes. Melton Environmental Group president Daryl Akers said that dumping threatened the environment. “It’s disappointing that rubbish dumping is such a problem in Melton,” Mr Akers said. “You see great big trailer loads of rubbish being dumped, especially around the back roads and on embankments near waterways. “If there are exotic weeds among some of the green waste that is discarded in these places, they grow and can be harmful to our environment.” Melton Recycling Facility, on Ferris Road, charges $20 for a car or station wagon load of rubbish or up to $80 for a large, heaped trailer. It costs $120 to dispose of mattresses, $30 for bulk rubbish and $90 for rock and rubble. Report illegal dumping at: melton.vic.gov. au/dumped-rubbish

Council cash cap on tea talkers By Esther Lauaki Melton council has agreed to cap the amount it will spend on guest speakers for its International Women’s Day high tea at $5000 – in addition to the $10,000 it plans to spend hosting the annual event. The council stirred controversy last year when it spent more than $16,000 – which had not been budgeted for – on an invitation-only high tea. Watts ward councillor Lara Carli raised concerns that while council had decided last

April to restrict the budget for future high teas to $10,000, there had been no explicit restriction placed on the amount that could be spent on guest speakers. Councillors voted last Monday to approve an allowance of $5000 to cover speaker costs. The theme for this year’s IWD mayoral event, on March 8, will be “Melton Women – Past, Present and Future”. Council legal and governance manager Christine Denyer said proposed speakers for this year’s high tea would reflect the theme by including two Melton historians, Melton

Woman of the Year Jane Sultana and an “inspiring” young sportswoman. “None of these speakers are professional speakers and therefore would not demand a high fee,” Ms Denyer said. “The fee for the historians is estimated at $2000. In relation to the Melton Woman of

the Year and the young sportswoman, it is envisaged that there would be a small fee or donation to that person’s preferred charity.” Cr Sophie Ramsey, who came under fire over the 2017 high tea when she was mayor, said that she still “wholeheartedly” supported the event. “I copped a beating over the event costing ‘more than $20,000’, but it actually came in at just over $16,000, as it was later found,” Cr Ramsey told the council meeting. “But I think this is a wonderful day … International Women’s Day will hopefully live on in the City of Melton for a long time.”

Melton’s free snake removal program could be here to stay. A report outlining the results of a two-year trial snake removal program in the area was tabled at last Monday’s council meeting, with councillors voting to continue the program for now and eventually make it a permanent service – if next year’s budget allows. The snake removal program has cost council $28,000 to date. More than 200 call-outs were recorded in 2017, mainly in Caroline Springs, Melton, Brookfield and Eynesbury, with nearly half of those resulting in the relocation of snakes. In that period, 46 tiger and 47 brown snakes were found and relocated, while 32 calls turned out to be for lizards. Cr Lara Carli, who initiated the trial in 2016, said she was keen to see the program “locked in” as a permanent service. “I believe our residents deserve this program,” Cr Carli said. “It’s been a successful program. “We pay high rates here and the service has been so supported by our residents.” But Cr Sophie Ramsey pushed for the initiative to be considered under the next budget. “I agree that it’s been a huge success,” Cr Ramsey said. “It’s attracted a lot of attention … but, like all good initiatives, I believe it should be referred to next year’s budget meetings to allow the budget to determine council’s priorities.”

Ballarat rail line out of the loop Cambodia bid a class act

(Dennis Manktelow)

Public transport users have criticised construction on the Ballarat line upgrade, with the planned train line duplication falling a kilometre short of a previously created loop. A three-kilometre stretch of track will be duplicated between Bacchus Marsh station and Kerrs Road, but the state government has confirmed there will be a gap to the Rowsley loop, built in 2016. The duplication allows for trains going in opposite directions to pass one another without causing delays. Earthworks on the upgrade began last month. Public Transport Users Association Ballarat convener Ben Lever said not connecting the loops was “illogical”. “The point of the project is to get rid of these bottlenecks, but having one kilometre of single track between loops makes it so much more complicated to timetable,” he said. “Timetabling will be hard, in particular, when one train is late and they need to be in specific spots at specific times. “It’s just really disappointing and seems illogical that you’d duplicate and get in sight of the Rowsley loop and not link them up. “If it’s a long stretch it’s understandable, but it’s only one kilometre.” Regional Rail Revival project director Mark Haryvluk said detailed assessments had been carried out to determine where track duplication would take place. Mr Haryvluk said the placement would allow trains to come out of nearby stabling facilities and would enable the delivery of extra peak services and trains every 40 minutes during off-peak periods. The full upgrade is expected to be completed next year.

A Melton teacher who left her heart in Cambodia hopes to make her dream of building a school there a reality. Coburns Primary School teacher Belinda Marshall said that on a recent trip to Cambodia she discovered that Cheasmorn village, outside of Siem Reap, needed a school. “I was volunteering over there in January and came across a man called Sok Chamroeun, who wanted to set up a school,” Ms Marshall said. “He was trying to educate about 350 kids out of two rundown rooms. “His dream was to raise money to be able to build a school for them because only about 100 kids could attend at a time because of the shortage of space.” Ms Marshall is making it her mission to raise $50,000 to bring the village school dream to fruition. “A little goes a long way over there,” Ms Marshall said. “I immediately fell in love with Cambodia … everyone should have the right to health and education.” The project will be driven by donations, with an online crowdfunding campaign having already raised nearly $2000. The call has sounded for a newer generation of returned servicemen and women to band together and support each other. Melton Returned and Services League launched its young veterans sub group last year for people who served in any part of the military from 1991 – and organisers want more members. Committee members Stephen Cook and Ben Arthur recognised a need for more support services for their peers and now run the RSL Active program to bring young veterans and their families together to help them transition into civilian life. “We want to change the image of the RSL to entice the younger servicemen and women out there, who might need support, Mr Cook said.

Mr Arthur, 37, served in Timor with the 4RAR Commando for six months in 2001. He said the program is for returned servicemen and women who might feel “alienated and disengaged from society. “A lot of people are lost when they return to civilian lifestyle, he said. “RSL Active gives us a chance to be with like-minded people. “Some people have mental health issues, physical disabilities and a lot of the guys and women are dealing with something that has not been diagnosed. Golf, surfing, archery and paintball are among the activities planned in coming months. Step up for busy kids A Melton dance program needs help to keep its weekend classes moving. BusyFeet – a dance, music and movement program for children with intellectual and physical disabilities – is looking for a qualified teacher to run its popular Saturday workshops in Hillside. About 25 children are enrolled in the volunteer-run initiative which caters to children aged between six and 16. Program chair Annette Butterworth said the program provided opportunities for the children to meet friends and let loose. “The kids love the program,” she said. “They come into the room and they socialise and

have so much fun. It’s also great for the parents and carers because they have the opportunity to network and have a break over a coffee and talk to other people who have similar situations.” BusyFeet classes are held in Melton on Thursday afternoons from 4.30-5.30pm and in Hillside on Saturdays from 11-11.45am during school terms. The program is supported by Melton council, Caroline Springs Rotary Club and Instyle Dance Company. Details: 0401 031 917

Lerderderg Library could be in for a prestigious name change. Moorabool council is thinking of renaming the Bacchus Marsh library, which also houses the council offices, after former resident Peter Carey – a two-time Man Booker Prize winner. East Moorabool councillor John Keogh requested at last Wednesday’s meeting for council officers to explore the possibility of renaming Lerderderg Library the Peter Carey Library. The proposed moniker would give a nod to Carey, who received the international accolade for writers in 1988 for his book Oscar and Lucinda and again in 2001 with True History of the Kelly Gang. He attended Bacchus Marsh State School from 1948 to 1953, then boarded at Geelong Grammar School between 1954 and 1960. Cr Keogh hoped the library could achieve worldwide acclaim by being renamed. “We are fortunate to have a former resident of Bacchus Marsh that has been the recipient of the prize on two occasions,” Cr Keogh said. “This is an opportunity to recognise a great writer and our highly regarded library facility.” The name change would require officers to research the naming of public places and building protocols and gain Carey’s approval.

Red brick veneer set against a perfect front lawn and a simple facade sets a tone that continues within. It’s not fussy, it has all the mod-cons, loads of space and is understated in style. Four bedrooms are all carpeted and have built-in robes including the main bedroom with en suite and walk-in robe. On just over 550 square metres, in Bella Gardens estate, this four-year-old house is in great condition and has an as-new feel. Enjoy open-plan, high-gloss tiled, living spaces that are kept light and bright by well-placed windows. The kitchen has a generous island bench, storage, stainless-steel appliances and a slate-grey glass splashback. Ducted heating, ducted cooling keep the climate under control. The backyard is quite large and L-shaped with a mature lawn. Add an entertaining zone and complete this story that has “happily ever after” written all over it.

This well-maintained three-bedroom property is a fantastic down-sizing or first-home option due to its price and low-maintenance gardens. One of two on a battle-axed block, it has a secure front garden (great for pets) and a common driveway to the side with secure garage access. All three bedrooms are carpeted and have built-in robes. Gloss slate tiling has been laid in the hall through to the kitchen which has great storage, stainless-steel appliances including an oven with separate grill feature. The potbelly fireplace is a lovely touch in the meals area, perfect for chilly mornings with a cup of coffee and the paper. This light-filled area has views of the undercover entertaining area and lawn. The L-shaped lounge room is generously proportioned, is carpeted and has views of the front yard.

New and stylishly appointed, this unit has great street presence and a decent backyard. In a great spot in Peppermint Grove estate, enjoy being a quick drive from local shopping yet still tucked away in a quiet residential pocket. The three bedrooms are carpeted and have built-in robes, the main with en suite and walk-in robe. Open-plan living includes a kitchen with timber-style panelling, a butler’s pantry, stone benchtops and stainless-steel appliances. Dining and living flows on from there, all light-filled. A slider opens to an undercover deck with lawned area. Split-systems and a single garage with internal access are inclusions. Currently rented for $300 per week, this is a great investment or an equally great first home.

Sweet with a charm that would be nice to come home to is this brick veneer property set near parkland and local amenities. The brick single garage adds to the welcoming kerb appeal as does secure Colourbond fencing. All three bedrooms are carpeted, have built-in robes and receive good light. The main bathroom is contemporary and hard-wearing and there is a powder room for guests. The open-plan living area at the rear has merbau-style floating floorboards which accentuate the sense of space. The contemporary kitchen has a stainless-steel oven, cooktop and rangehood. Security features such as internal garage access, screen doors, lockable windows and security shutters to the living room window provide peace of mind. Split-systems and ducted heating add to the amenity. Stroll to the Scott Street shops.

Look below the surface and discover a great family home in the making. Much of the important stuff – updated kitchen and bathrooms – is done and the rest is just a matter of putting your own stamp on it. The cul-de-sac location – within 25 metres of a large playground and cycling paths – is a beauty for young families, while no less than five schools (primary and secondary) and Melton Waves leisure centre are less than four-minute car trips away. On about 585 square metres, the house

– leased at $380 a week until May – has internal and external stairs heading up to a carpeted living room with gas heater, a modern bathroom and a bedroom (air-conditioner, laminated floorboards and built-in robe), with a glass slider leading to a large terrace. This makes the upper level perfect for parental or teenage retreat. Back on the ground, entry to the house is under an open pergola. A spacious lounge room has timber-laminate floorboards in grey shades, vertical blinds (as on most

windows), an air-conditioner and a gas heater set in a grey-painted tapestry brick surround. Grey is also the colour of the tiled kitchen’s ample laminate cabinetry. An island bench topped with glossy mottled-charcoal laminate, cream splashback tiles, stainless-steel dishwasher, gas cooktop and Lofra underbench electric oven are other kitchen features. The cupboard laundry is concealed in the adjoining meals zone.

Of three bedrooms running down the left, two have built-in robes and a split-system. The nearby modern bathroom, decked out in white with charcoal accents and grey floor tiles, is separate from the toilet. A coloured-concrete alfresco area – partially covered by the upper terrace – faces a good-sized backyard awaiting a green thumb. A side driveway leads to a tandem garage with concrete floor. SPORT Caroline Springs on the front foot Caroline Springs is in a prime position for a win against Barkley Street Uniting that will further strengthen its Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 finals hopes. Sitting fourth heading into the second last round, Caroline Springs’ clear focus against the bottom side is to get as many points as possible. After day one, Caroline Springs is well on top with an outright victory not out of the equation. But skipper Kane Sevior said his side wasn’t getting carried away. Just 11 points separate first-placed East Coburg and fifth-placed Moonee Valley, with all finals spots up for grabs. “Obviously, Barkley are struggling a bit,” Sevior said. “We said we need to secure the win here and then see what happens against [second-placed] Sunshine. “Every point is vital. “We’ll maximise points if we can get an

outright and I’d sign for that right here and now.” Sevior was a happy man after his side dominated day one. Its batsmen put on 3-229 off just 51 overs, with plenty of runs coming after tea. The instructions to the batsmen were to hit out, but even Sevior was surprised by how quickly that happened. “Nick Alexander made his first century and Gayashan Weerasekara made 85,” he said. “The two put on a 180-odd partnership. When I said to them at the tea break to lift the run rate so we could have a bowl, I thought we might get 15 to 20 overs at them. We ended up bowling 29 overs.” Without regular opening bowler Chris Vulic, who was out because of illness, two of Caroline Springs’ younger bowlers, Jermone Arandez, 18, and Lucas Blackman, 15, were the

keys as Uniting tumbled to 5-42. Arandez took three wickets and Blackman bowled well at good speeds, showing the club’s focus on youth continues to pay off. In other games, third-placed Sydenham-Hillside has a battle on its hands against Sunshine. Sunshine was 9-237 at stumps after day one. In west A1, Melton South Royals is on top after day one of the derby against Melton Centrals. Centrals was bowled out for 103, with the Royals 1-41 in reply. The Royals need a win to keep finals hopes alive. Tara Murray Nick Alexander hits out on his way to a century. (Damjan Janevski)

Bacchus Marsh claimed an outright win against Sunbury in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. The Bulls needed just eight runs on day two for first innings points and they did that with ease before declaring at 5-182 with a lead of 77. Peter Lalor finished 101 not out. Sunbury was all out for 115 in its innings, Heath Boffey top-scored with 35. The Bulls made the winning runs, one wicket down, finishing 1-40. Diggers Rest Bulla moved away from the relegation zone after defeating Sunbury United.

Melton could not reduce the gap to the top four in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1. Facing fourth-placed Werribee in a must-win game, there wasn’t much between the two sides but Werribee won 78 (14)-71 (4). Melton sits sixth, 30 points behind Werribee.

Squash star dreams big

Darley is in control after day one of its match against Ballarat-Redan in the Ballarat Cricket Association. The Lions bowled Ballarat-Redan out for 149, with Ben Longhurst taking 5-41. The sixth-placed Lions had to face 15 overs at the end of the day. It was slow going, but the Lions got through unscathed and will resume at 0-15.

By Lance Jenkinson

CHBD

Dylan Molinaro has secured a ticket to the big squash events at this year’s Commonwealth Games. In four years time, he wants to turn that spectator ticket into a player pass. “I’d like to make it to the Commonwealth Games as a player,” Molinaro said. Molinaro is a youngster on the up in the squash world. The immensely talented 15-year-old has taken his game to the international stage and shown that it stands up against the best. Molinaro went to the Oceania Junior Championship in Queensland as an unseeded outsider, but returned with a podium finish. The Williamstown resident knocked off the seventh and top seeds en route to a win in the under-17 boys third place play-off. “This tournament was a real step up in class,” Molinaro said. “It was an international tournament and I played against players from all over the Oceania region. I was a bit nervous when I played the higher seeds, but I was confident that I could win.” Molinaro, a member of the Kooyong squash 40 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 13, 2018

team, turned heads when he brought down top-seeded compatriot Remi Young. After easily accounting for Fiji’s Saneel Chhaganlal and taking out Australian seventh seed Joshua Penfold, Molinaro went into the clash against Young full of confidence. Having faced Young on the court previously, Molinaro knew his strengths and sought about ways to exploit his weaknesses. “I knew how he played and my coach, Terry White, sort of helped me out with it,” Molinaro said. “He knows how these guys play as well, so it was beneficial to my game.” Molinaro possesses a dangerous game of his own – and he works hard every day to keep bettering his strengths. So while the Westbourne Grammar School student is well coached and can read and react to opponents, he is also pro-active on court. “I like to play at the front of the court and use my drop shot and short game to bring them in,” he said. “You’ve got to be pretty quick, pretty fast … you’ve got to be that split second faster than them.” Molinaro’s quest for the Oceania title came to an end at the semi-final stage, losing to Malaysia’s Kerwin Teh in three games.

Molinaro admits that Teh outplayed him, but is eager for a re-match. “If I were to play him again, I’d try to control the pace, control the rallies and play my game,” he said. Molinaro, who was a runner-up at the Australian Junior Championships, is dreaming big. He is working hard in a bid for a scholarship at an ivy league school in the US and wants to turn professional. It will be another big year for Molinaro in 2018, with the goal being to win titles at the Victorian Open and the Australian Junior Championships. Of course, he will be cheering on the Australians at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, too. Molinaro is the February nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Molinaro will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club to assist him in achieving his sports goals.

Bacchus Marsh Gold slipped further from the Central Highlands Division top grade top two, with a big loss to Gisborne. Gisborne, the in-form team of the competition, won 105 (16)-94 (2). The loss leaves Gold fourth. Bacchus Marsh Blue lost 115 (17)-86 (1) against Lancefield.

GDCA

St Anthonys remains on top of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade ladder after a strong performance against Bacchus Marsh. The Bulls made 130, which the Saints chased down with ease, making 9-287. Skipper Cam Clayton made 130. Eynesbury kept the pressure on the top four by defeating Riddell. Melton adopts a youth policy after disappointing year It will be a different looking Melton Thoroughbreds side this year in Big V men’s division 2, with a massive focus on youth. There’s been a number of changes on and off the court after a disappointing 2017, when the side finished last in division 1 and was relegated to division 2. Joe Hooks has been appointed coach and most of the playing group has not returned for a number of different reasons. Hooks played basketball professionally in Europe and Asia before a car accident ended his playing career. He has turned his focus to coaching and hasn’t looked back. “I’ve been in and out of the country for the last 10 years,” he said. “I’ve coached in Africa, local high school kids, coached in Fiji and coached quite a few places around the world. “I also ran a club for 10 years which gave kids the chance to play basketball and get school work done.” Hooks said the challenge of helping to build a side from the bottom up was part of the attraction of coming to Melton. Most of the Thoroughbreds squad from last

Melton’s men’s side this season.

season hasn’t returned, with youth to be a big focus this year. “There’s the challenge of trying to help change the culture and bring a new look to the side,” he said. “It’s not necessarily about wins and losses, it’s the challenges of helping

the kids get better. There’s some talent on this side of town, but it seems to keep leaving to other places and hopefully we can turn that around and make kids want to stay here a little longer.” Hooks said most of the playing group are in

their late teens and early 20s, while they also have a couple of veterans. Jordan Kirk is one player who has returned and he should provide some vital leadership for the squad. Dexter Graham joins the side as an import. Graham played with Craigieburn Eagles last season, averaging more than 17 points a game. Hooks said he believed his side could surprise a lot of people, but knows they are a work in process. He said they are still looking for more players. “It’s going to take a while, building something from the ground up always takes a while,” he said. “I have the support of the Melton club and staff and members and I think we can be something pretty special. “We’ll try our best night in and night out and get some people out here to watch us … it’s going to be a team that plays hard every night and they will play together.” The Thoroughbreds kick off their season on March 17 in a triple header with their women’s and youth league men’s side. Melton eyes the finals By Tara Murray Melton all but sealed its finals spot in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west competition by defeating Altona on Saturday. The ladder-leading Lions sit 18 points clear of seventh, heading into the final two rounds. Only two outright defeats and results going against them will stop the Lions from a top-six finish. Lions coach Nathan Geisler said it was a welcome feeling knowing finals were looking likely. “We spoke about it after Christmas that we’re in a good position,” he said. “We wanted to learn from last year when we missed out. “Hopefully now we can win the next two games and get that home final.” The Lions had to work harder than they

would have liked to defeat Altona on Saturday. With 8-232 on the board after day one, the Lions had a good platform and started well with the ball to have Altona in trouble at 5-35. But poor fielding let the As back into the game and at 7-184, it was game on. Danger-man Brad Jones then struck three times to seal the win for the Lions and the As were bowled out for 188. Geisler said the fielding made the win a bit tougher than it should have been. He said it’s something they will have to work on in the coming weeks. “We dropped a few catches and let them back into the game,” he said. “It was like the Brunswick game all over again and it cost us then. It got to the stage where we couldn’t hold a catch. “It was a good win in the end.” Jones, who has the second most wickets in the competition, finished with five, while

Geisler was also full of praise for Jake Charge who bowled well into the wind in difficult conditions. The Lions face Hoppers Crossing and Coburg in the final two rounds. Ash Sweet, who missed Saturday due to representative commitments, will return to the side, strengthening the bowling. Despite the opposition sitting towards the bottom of the table, Geisler said they won’t be taking anyone lightly. While the Lions are all but assured their spot, just six points separates fifth-placed Plenty Valley and 11th placed Hoppers Crossing. “We’re expected to win both games, but no game is easy,” he said. “No one at the start of the season predicted that we would be on top and you look at the bottom six teams and no one expected some of them being there. “It’s a pretty much even competition.”

Caroline Springs Hockey Club is hosting its first-ever tournament – and it’s all for a good cause. The club, in its second year, will give back to the community by running the Beyondblue Cup on Saturday. The round-robin competition will feature three open-age mixed teams from 11.30am. Caroline Springs president Kathy Jungfer said the club wanted to get behind the Beyondblue cause and promote hockey as a sport of inclusiveness. “This idea was brought to our board by a member who lost a former teammate,” Jungfer said. “We also have club members who suffer from depression. “This initiative is our small way of helping our own members and all the hockey community through raising awareness and much-needed funds for the charity, Beyondblue. “We feel strongly about this as a club.” Jungfer said the club would look at making the tournament a regular event to promote the cause in the coming years. Hockey Victoria, which has done a lot of work to raise money for and awareness of Beyondblue, has also come on board in helping the Caroline Springs day come to fruition. “It’s a major thing for us to host something like this,” Jungfer said. “This is the first year we have joined with Hockey Victoria to run this initiative and hope to be able to grow this event over the next three to four years. “We’ve kept it to a limited number of teams to try and maximise game time with having only one pitch. “There will be a barbecue and a social day for anyone who wants to come down and watch.” The tournament will be held at Melton Hockey Fields, 132 Bridge Road, Atherston Estate, Melton South. By contrast, the switch from locally produced to imported Toyota Camrys is likely to be seamless given our feeling that a fair proportion of current owners aren’t even aware their cars were built at the company’s Altona plant. New Camry’s come from Nagoya in Japan. The 2018 Camry is the first sedan to be built on the new Toyota New Global Architecture, which allows the sharing of parts and components among many vehicles across the Toyota range. In the Camry, it allows the car to sit a little bit lower and wider and provide a lower centre of gravity. This, together with a more rigid chassis and enhancements to suspension and steering, combine for significant improvement in driving dynamics. New model names have been introduced. In ascending order of equipment they are Ascent, Ascent Sport, SX and SL. All but the SX come with the option of hybrid power while the SX and SL are available with V6 petrol engines. Prices have been reduced for six of the nine new Camry variants while increases on the other three are more than compensated for by extra features. Camry has long been seen as a conservative car, so it comes as a bit of a surprise to see a much sportier look to the new model.

The new Toyota Camry is sleeker and sportier. (Pictures: Supplied)

The petrol-only SL has a panoramic sunroof, while the SL Hybrid uses an electric tilt-and-slide moonroof. New Camry engines come with the same capacities as the superseded models, but have been revised. Outputs from the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit are marginally down to 133 kW of power and 231 Nm, but significantly up in both the 2.5-litre hybrid and V6 engines.

Fuel consumption is down by about 6.5 per cent for the V6 and between 13.5 per cent and 19 cent in the various hybrids. Each engine gets a different transmission, all automatics of course. The 2.5-litre petrol automatic is mated to a conventional six-speed; the hybrid to a CVT; with the V6 having an eight-speed. There are paddle shifters on the SX and SL models. Standard across the new Camry range

are seven airbags; enhanced ABS brakes; pre-collision safety system; autonomous emergency braking; lane departure alert with steering assist; active cruise control; automatic high beam; hill-start assist; trailer sway control; reversing camera; LED headlights and LED daytime running lights. The top spec SL adds blind-spot monitoring; rear cross-traffic alert; rain-sensing wipers: head-up display; and electro-chromatic interior rear-view

mirror while the three higher grades have front and rear parking sensors. The inclusion of autonomous emergency braking and lane departure alert across the range ensures it gets a five-star ANCAP safety rating. Significant improvements in Camry’s looks and performance are sure to appeal to the keen private buyer who wants a comfortable commuter that can be taken for some fun weekend driving.
