Hope for homeless By Esther Lauaki More crisis response services will be made available to Melton’s homeless youth thanks to a $1.8 million boost. Homelessness service provider Hope Street was last week approved funding, to be distributed over the next five years, from the Ian Potter Foundation grants program. Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said the money would be used to establish its youth mobile outreach service based at Taylors Hill and Melton, and help towards building a youth refuge centre in Melton. The state government has already committed $5.4 million over the next four years to fund the centre. “The funding from the Ian Potter Foundation will help us to deliver an emergency mobile outreach service to young people aged between 16 and 25 from this area who are homeless or at risk of homelessness,” Ms Bennett said. “There is no specialist homelessness crisis response service in Melton so young people have to travel at least 27 kilometres to Sunshine which is the nearest homelessness service. “They normally have to travel by V/Line train which means it’s not very accessible for them. “This outreach service will provide young people with an immediate response. “Our workers will go out to wherever the people are, whether that be in school, at a police station, at the hospital, a friends house or in a park … we’ll be available seven days a week.” Ms Bennett said Hope Street’s long-running partnership with a raft of youth service providers, the Ian Potter Foundation and Melton council was crucial to its existence. “We want to be able to showcase Melton as a leading municipality in responding to homelessness,” she said. “This new service will provide significant interventions enabling young people to move out of homelessness. “This will send messages to other people in the community about these innovative models that can be transferred in other local government areas.” Melton mayor Bob Turner said he was delighted about the new outreach service. “This … will go a long way to helping young people experiencing homelessness in our community,” Cr Turner said. “I commend Hope Street for their dedication in bringing this project to life, and Melton City Council is proud to support such a worthy, and much-needed initiative.”

Mayor Bob Turner, Serap Ozdemir from Hope Street, and chief executive Donna Bennett are thrilled with the funding announcemnt. (Joe Mastroianni)

Hume Drive upgrade works begin By Tate Papworth Work on the $4.46 million project to duplicate Hume Drive between Delahey and Taylors Hill has begun. The upgrades will see the stretch of road between Calder Park Drive, Taylors Hill, and Copperfield Drive, Delahey, extended from two lanes to four. The improvements will also include traffic lights at the intersection of Hume Drive and Overton Lea Boulevard. Existing roundabouts will also be upgraded and landscaping works will be completed.

Upgrades will significantly improve road safety

- Bob Turner

The improvements are being jointly funded by Melton and Brimbank councils because the stretch of road falls within both municipalities. Melton City Council will shoulder the lion’s share of the project, contributing $3.54 million.

At its meeting last December the council awarded the contract to ACE Infrastructure. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the duplication works would mean an easier commute for residents. “The upgrades will significantly improve road safety and cater for increased traffic associated with our growing population,” Cr Turner said. The duplication is one of dozens of Melton infrastructure works budgeted for the next financial year as part of the council’s $52 million capital works program. The Brimbank council is putting up a total of

$915,000 for the Hume Drive work. Brimbank deputy mayor Daniel Allan said the upgrades will help get traffic moving along the busy stretch of road. “Brimbank council is pleased to support this exciting project which will expand Hume Drive. “These works will improve traffic flow for neighbouring residents in Brimbank and Melton,” Cr Allan said. Construction is expected to be completed by mid to late 2018. Hume Drive will remain open throughout the duration of construction works.

Kryal knight aims for a bullseye ride Kryal Castle resident knight Phillip Leitch and his steed, Valiant, have been sharpening their skills for this weekend’s horse archery tournament. About 15 archers from around the state will join them for the Medieval Horse Sports Australia event at the castle. Horse archery instructor Katrina Kruse, a pioneer of the sport in Australia, said the event

would be an opportunity for spectators to learn about the modern version of this medieval sport. “Accuracy and being able to load the arrow while riding are the greatest challenges,” Kruse said. “The sport in Australia generally attracts women because majority of the equestrian industry is flooded with women, but there will be men in the mix this weekend.

“Kryal Castle is a smaller arena than others we hold competitions at but there will still be plenty of challenges.” The horse archery event will start at 9am in the main arena on Saturday and continue on Sunday. Details: horsearcheryaustralia.com.au

Extreme heat is being blamed for a dip in performance on the Ballarat line in the past two months. V/Line data for January shows that 83.5 per cent of services arrived at their destinations on time, compared with 86.3 in November. Hot weather is also being blamed for December’s lower than usual punctuality of 83.9 per cent. But the Ballarat line performed better than the state average. Across the V/Line network, 80.2 per cent of services arrived at their destinations on time in January. Reliability on the Ballarat line was 95.1 per cent in January – slightly up on the previous month. Across the network, 94.3 per cent of services were delivered for the month. V/Line chief executive James Pinder said that when the temperature reached 36 degrees, trains were slowed to 90km/h and some services were replaced by coaches. “Safety is our number one priority, so heat-speed restrictions are enforced on really hot days because the steel tracks expand in the heat,” Mr Pinder said. “We’re working to do everything we can to minimise disruptions to passengers during the summer months and continue to remind passengers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.” Works on the Ballarat line upgrade ramped up over the Australia Day weekend, with site preparation complete and safety fencing installed so that the 18-kilometre track duplication between Deer Park West and Melton can begin. Vaccination rates at record level By Esther Lauaki Immunisation rates in Melton are at the highest in history, according to latest figures. Data released last week from the Australian Immunisation Register showed most children are now protected against vaccine-preventable diseases with the local area hitting the ‘herd immunity’ target of 95 per cent. It also revealed that 96.1 per cent of five-year-olds in the municipality are now fully immunised.

Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said that since the introduction of the state government’s stringent No Jab No Play laws, there has been a consistent increase in immunisation rates for children. From last week, only history statements from the Australian immunisation register will be accepted as evidence of immunisation or medical exemption to vaccination when enrolling a child in childcare or kindergarten. The laws aim to reduce the risk of potentially false vaccination exemptions being written up

and simplify enrolment for early childhood centres. The statewide immunisation rate of 95.3 per cent is the third highest rate in Australia behind Tasmania and the ACT and is up two per cent since 2016. The 95 per cent ‘herd immunity’ target is necessary to halt the spread of dangerous and virulent diseases such as measles. Health minister Jill Hennessy said vaccination ensured the whole community was protected.

“We know the more people who are vaccinated – the greater the protection for everyone,” Ms Hennessy said. “There is no debate. Immunisation is safe, effective and saves lives. “Victorian parents are listening to science. And that’s great news. “High rates of vaccination provide important protection for those who cannot receive vaccines, such as babies who are too young or people who cannot receive vaccines for medical reasons.”

These pint-sized chefs loved learning some life lessons over pancakes. The youngsters at Eclipse Early Education in Eynesbury celebrated Pancake Day, inspired by Shrove Tuesday, last week. Centre manager Rachel Downing said the day was an opportunity to learn about the pancake tradition and gain some skills. “We celebrate all sorts of different days,” Ms Downing said. “We also marked Valentine’s Day last week and we will be celebrating Chinese New Year, as well. “Shrove Tuesday’s not just about eating pancakes – we also take the opportunity to teach them about the meaning behind it … there’s also a science behind it and a life skill to be learned in cooking. “They had a lot of fun doing so.” Esther Lauaki

Relay ready to kick off This weekend will be all about family for many of the teams participating in Melton’s Relay for Life. Ohana, meaning family in Hawaiian, is one of 14 teams already registered for the relay which starts on Saturday at Tabcorp Park. Teams from the area have banked more than $28,000 ahead of the event – nearly halfway to a goal of $60,000. Ohana is leading the fundraising efforts in Melton, raising more than $7000 through a Hawaiian night and the generosity of its supporters. The relay, one of the Cancer Council’s major annual fundraisers that is now in its eighth year in Melton, brings thousands of families, friends, work and community groups

together from around the state to celebrate and remember loved ones affected by cancer. Melton chair Mary Carroll said the Relay for Life community is strong in the area. “A lot of the teams have been here before and are returning because they love it so much,” Ms Carroll said. Teams that raise more than $5000 can allocate the money towards a preferred area of research. The Relay will run from 4pm on Saturday and end at 10am on Sunday. A Candlelight Ceremony is also held at 8pm on Saturday. Teams can register on the day. Donate: bit.ly/2BZzHW9 Esther Lauaki

Police are searching for two men in relation to two armed robberies. The first was at a milk bar on Dumfries Street in Deer Park on February 1 where police allege two men, one armed with a baseball bat and one with an axe, entered the store just before 9pm and grabbed cash and cigarettes. The second was at a grocery store on Tenterfield Drive, Burnside Heights on February 2. The offenders are described as Caucasian in appearance.

Clarification

A story that appeared in Star Weekly on February 13, “A new chapter for Lerderderg”, stated Moorabool council was looking at the possibility of a name change for the library. Teen pleads guilty to fatal crash Baking as easy as cupcakes Bakers will be delighted with the classes on offer at the Melton South Community Centre. Chef Sallie Davies will be teaching home cooks the tricks of her trade in cupcake and two-tier cake decorating in coming weeks as part of the centre’s raft of short courses. Participants will learn the intricacies of fondant icing, chocolate ganache and buttercream, as well as piping techniques in this Thursday’s cupcake decorating class. There’s more to learn at the beginners cake decorating class on March 1 which will focus on the latest baking trend – semi-naked drizzle cakes. Centre manager Pam Madej said the courses cater to the interests of the community. “It seems that people look for something different to do,” Ms Madej said. “These are skills that people can use at home in their everyday lives. It can be very expensive to purchase cakes for birthdays and special occasions. Having the skills to bake your own is wonderful.” Students will need to bring an apron, container to take their baked goods home in and three coloured gels (any colour). The cupcake decorating class this Thursday runs from 10am to noon. Details: meltonsouth.org.au

A teenage boy has pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death over a horror crash during a police chase that killed Ballarat teenager Jacqueline Vodden. The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty by video link at a children’s court on Thursday last week to 10 charges after police withdrew seven other charges. Eight of the remaining charges relate to the day of the collision at Ballan on September 19, 2017. Ms Vodden, 16, died after the van she was travelling in collided with a stationary VicRoads truck on the Western Freeway after police activated lights and sirens before attempting an intercept. In a packed court room, the magistrate read each charge to the teenager during the committal mention hearing. He replied “guilty” to the seven indictable and three summary offences. The charges include culpable driving causing death, reckless conduct engaging serious injury, failing to render assistance after a collision, driving dangerously or negligently while being pursued by police and unlicensed driving. The teenager admitted to stealing a black Hyundai Elantra at Ballan on the day of the collision, stealing a 2015 Toyota Hiace van valued at $38,000 at Ballarat on an unknown date and stealing number plates at Geelong the day before the fatal collision. The teenager’s lawyer told the court counsel would prefer to have the plea hearing held as soon as possible, given his client’s young age. The magistrate set a hearing down to be held at a county court on February 26.

Teen hurt in gas blast A teenage boy suffered burns to his body after a gas pipe explosion in Melbourne’s north-west. Properties were evacuated in the wake of the blast that happened in the suburb of Maddingley, near Bacchus Marsh, last Thursday afternoon. Police believe a gas pipe ruptured at a worksite, causing two explosions. Police spokeswoman Natalie Butler said the incident led to another explosion, in nearby Griffith Street. “The circumstances are yet to be established,

but at this stage it is believed a gas pipe may have been ruptured about 1.30pm, causing a small explosion, she said. At least two people were hurt during the explosions. It is understood the teenager went to Bacchus Marsh Hospital and from there was taken by ambulance to The Alfred just before 2pm. Ms Butler said another man was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Bacchus Marsh Secondary College and Bacchus Marsh Grammar were evacuated and

residents at the nearby Providence Catholic nursing home were also evacuated. Witness Michelle Smith said she heard several loud explosions. “We all ran out, there was plumes of dust and I thought it may have been a car accident, she told ABC radio. “I looked down the street and all of the stormwater drain covers were off – they had been blown. WorkSafe is investigating the incident. – The Age

All ready to ride for Freddy Borg Freddie Borg was a man who loved cars, bikes and a cold beverage. His sons, Troy Borg and Chris Buckley-Foster, will host the sixth Freddie Borg memorial run at Bacchus Marsh this Sunday in honour of the mechanic who died of cancer in 2012. “He was pretty well known in the Harley and trucking scene here in Bacchus Marsh, Troy said. “It was what he loved and so we bring everyone together each year to share stories and have a laugh while raising money for pancreatic cancer research. Last year’s event raised $3000 for the cause. The event starts at Flanagans Border Inn on Main Street at 10am. Riders can give a gold coin donation and all proceeds will go to the Pancare Foundation. Details: bit.ly/2stlyfO Esther Lauaki

Car crew drives hospital help Bacchus Marsh Hospital has benefitted to the tune of $50,000, thanks to the town’s annual hot car showcase. More than 4000 motor enthusiasts enjoyed the spectacle of 650 classic cars, motorbikes and trucks at Maddingley Park when the 13th annual David Calleja Memorial Car Show took place earlier this month. This year’s event raised $50,000, which will go towards the purchase of medical equipment to fit-out the hospital’s operating theatre renovation. Besides the automotive highlights, the show also included amusement rides, market stalls, barbecues and live music performances. Djerriwarrh Health Services interim chief executive Amanda Edwards said the level of support received from the community was amazing. “It was great to see the local community come out in such numbers, Ms Edwards said. “It was a fabulous family day out and I would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers and service clubs who made the day such a success, as well as everyone who attended the event and kindly contributed to Djerriwarrh Health Services. “The funds raised mean we can continue to invest in the future of our health service. Esther Lauaki

MY PLACE What is your connection to Melton? My grandparents owned 400 acres from Bulmans Road to Harkness Road. I came out each weekend from Camberwell and drove tractors when I was about 14. How long have you lived in the area? Besides living on the farm during school holidays, I built my first home in Melton in 1974 when I got married. I’ve lived in the area for 44 years. What are the most memorable changes you’ve seen in Melton. When the traffic was diverted away from High Street from Anthony’s Cutting and on to the freeway made a massive difference to local traffic.

Peter Earl, a Melton resident since 1974, is an avid Panthers football supporter. He chats with Esther Lauaki about his love for the community.

What other hats do you wear in the community? I have been involved with Melton South Football Club since 1977, holding the president’s position for 10 years during that time. Also secretary-treasurer of Melton Harness Racing Club for about 15 years. What are you passionate about? Obviously, passionate about the Panthers football club and harness racing … many great memories and friends. What is the best thing about living/working in Melton? I worked in Melbourne and suburbs for 24 years, then following a redundancy started working at Melton Produce before buying the business only 1.2 kilometres from home. (Joe Mastroianni)

If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? I think eventually a railway line flyover at Station Road would be fantastic for both morning and evening peak time traffic.

If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of fire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a fire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are. Grassfires are unlikely to spread into built up areas. Stay alert and monitor conditions. Don’t drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

Get it right the first time with

Store manager Shannon Hill with an RSPCA Victoria adoption kitten. (Damjan Janevski)

Time to adopt a pet A three-day adoption blitz will begin this Friday as RSPCA Victoria seeks to house about 1000 pets in desperate need of a home. The RSPCA ‘Clear the Shelter’ promotion will offer $29 adoptions of dogs, cats, guinea pigs and rabbits. The drastically cut price will be on offer from Friday to Sunday at all seven RSPCA Victoria animal care centres and participating Petbarn stores. RSPCA Victoria chief executive Dr Liz Walker said the promotion aims to find forever homes for animals currently in RSPCA care. “We monitor adoption promotions carefully and have found that the price someone pays to acquire an animal has no impact on return rates and no negative impact on the animal’s welfare,” she said.

Dr Walker said RSPCA Victoria does not have a limit on how long an animal can remain in its care, but believes that pets belong in homes not shelters. “The $29 fee is nowhere near what it costs to prepare an animal for adoption, but if we can get hundreds of pets into permanent homes then that’s a really worthwhile investment,” she said. All adoption animals are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, health and behaviour checked and adoption procedures will ensure each animal is matched to the right family. Visit Petbarn Maribyrnong, 16/179 Rosamond Road, between Friday and Sunday. Further details: rspcavic.org/adoption

Take a bite of the best of the south By Ewen McRae Blues, barbecue, and bars. No trip to America (in my view) would be complete without a stop or two in the south to experience all of these things, and the variety on offer as you cross each state line or shift from each city is an experience worth adding to your bucket list. As a part of the country with so much to offer I’m surprised more Australians don’t visit there, the South is perfectly suited to a road trip through some major cities and immersing yourself in the food and music. A good idea would be to start in Nashville, Tennessee, hire a car and make your way westwards. Nashville itself has a huge amount to offer, and not just that they play both kinds of music; country and western. I would recommend finding accommodation within walking distance of Broadway (the main restaurant and bar area in town), and from there you’re well placed to get out and explore. Near the top of the list for any trip to Nashville has to be the famous Ryman Auditorium, better known as the home of the Grand Ole Opry, and worth a tour even if you can’t see a show there. Near the Ryman is the Country Music Hall of Fame, which I enjoyed even though I’m far from a connoisseur, and if you still need a country music fix head to the Johnny Cash Museum for a closer look at the man in black. A night out in Nashville is best down along Broadway, where live music is king and the whole city comes for a good time every night. Every bar will have its own spin on live music, but for a more authentic country experience I’d recommend Robert’s Western World for a genuine honky tonk hoe down. For food, there’s any number of good

barbecue joints where you can get your fill of succulent ribs or mouth-watering brisket. I loved Peg Leg Porker, but follow your nose and you’re sure to find something to salivate over. And if you want some of Tennessee’s famous

whiskey go to Corsair Artisan Distillery for a tour and tasting session with a difference. Moving on from Nashville, a three-hour drive west will find you in Memphis; the home of blues and the birthplace of rock and roll.

A good starting point to get an overview of the town’s music legacy is to go straight to Sun Studio and do the tour there. Music luminaries such as Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King and Johnny Cash all recorded some of their breakthrough

You can’t visit Texas and not sample the barbecue on offer, and if you have the chance to go to Franklin Barbecue you will not be disappointed. Be warned, people camp out from 5am daily to sample this place, so be

prepared for a bit of a wait in line, but trust me it’s worth it. This is just a taste of the south, and there’s so much more to explore, but you have to save something for the return journey.

hits here, and it is also where Elvis Presley got his start and shot to worldwide fame. Once you’ve had a musical grounding you’re ready to head out to Graceland itself, for a very thorough look at the home of Elvis, as well as thousands of historical artifacts, gold records, cars, jumpsuits and guitars used by the king of rock and roll. Continuing the music theme, no trip to Memphis would be complete without a visit to iconic Beale Street to sample the blues. Much like Nashville, every bar will have live music on all night, and whether you’re looking for some chilled out blues, up tempo rock or dancing rockabilly you’ll have plenty of options. Pro tip: The Blues Hall has the most authentic blues band experience. Don’t forget to have some cash on hand to tip the bands, they play for free and rely on tips from the audience. While Memphis is a musical mecca, it’s also a significant city in the civil rights movement in America, and the National Civil Rights Museum is well worth checking out. The museum is next to the motel where Dr Martin Luther King jnr was assassinated in 1968, and covers 300 years of struggle for African Americans from slavery until today. It’s a no holds barred look at a bleak part of American history. If music and food are as big a part of your travel experience as they are for me, I’d recommend adding Austin to your itinerary. Known as the music capital of the world, and with the famous South By Southwest festival lighting up the town every year, it’s a diverse and thriving city with a wide gamut of options. Much like Nashville and Memphis, there is a concentration of music venues and bars on 6th Street, and for more of a local flavour head along Red River Street and catch a gig there.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a lot to be happy about at the Commercial Tootling down Watton Street looking for a carpark, I am bemused. But not nearly as bemused as Bennie and Deb, his mum. At issue is the nature of our destination – seemingly the sort of pub that would normally struggle, and fail, to gain the attention of CTS. A confession: I have been seduced by the nice Facebook pictures of the Commercial Hotel’s food, these featuring occasionally in my feed because of the joint’s links with the Werribee Bears rugby league outfit. I’m not a diehard fan of the club, but did venture down there for a couple of games last season. Even if the pub at hand would normally fall outside CTS parameters, we are – as ever – upbeat and hopeful. Truth is, had I twigged the Commercial is a pokies venue, this adventure almost certainly would have been stillborn. Happily, the pokies are well away from the dining room – out of sight, out of earshot and out of mind. That leaves us to happily enjoy the old-school ambiance. The Commercial’s dining room feels – from the carpet up – just like a country pub. As we expect, the menu is studded with the sorts of dishes routinely found in such places. But there’s a few nice wrinkles in there, too. Deb goes the roast pork dinner ($13). It’s a beauty, with a heap of good vegetables and more than enough highly porky and nicely

COMMERCIAL HOTEL Address: 111 Watton Street, Werribee Phone: 9741 2322 cooked meat. She loves it; the plate is clean when she’s done. For Bennie, it’s the pulled pork burger ($20), which tastes a lot better than it photographs. Oddly (perhaps even weirdly), the pulled meat appears to have been formed into a pattie. It tastes good to me and he enjoys it. But it’s fair to say Bennie has just about had it with pulled meat of any kind in burgers. The stars of our collective choosing are my barbecue baby back ribs ($33). There’s two good-size rack pieces in there. The meat is tasty and tender, and comes from the bones with ease. I know there’s people out there for whom gnaw is the desired norm and who will think that no recommendation at all. Still, for me this is a fine barbecue meal, the pricing of which can put some of the specialist barbecue joints in the shade. The ribs are handily abetted by a fine slaw. The only disappointment of our Commercial outing is the chips Bennie and I are provided. They’re OK – but also under-done and under-salted. EYNESBURY 21 Kevington Drive, 3338 Professionals Ryder: 9743 6400

Price: $729,000 – $769,000

In arguably the best enclave of peaceful Eynesbury – where neighbourliness extends to street parties, the golf course is metres away and The Homestead community hub is within a stroll – this is a property for those who value great design and aesthetics. There’s not a skerrick of this place – inside or out – that isn’t beautifully executed for luxe liveability and entertainment/relaxation through the seasons. On point decor in a palette of greys, tasteful fittings, stylish window treatments and generosity of space are hallmarks here.

No less than three gorgeous alfresco zones with lovely landscaping rockets 21 Kevington into the ranks of the highly covetable. Entry is to a wide hallway, laid with matte concrete-look porcelain tiles – the tiling throughout is stunning. Through double doors on the left is a carpeted theatre room (or fifth bedroom), while the hallway ducks right to two fitted bedrooms and a very chic bathroom with oval tub, dual-basin Caesarstone vanity and giant walk-in shower. On each side of the walk-through lounge room is an alfresco area. One is a tropical

haven, with dense fernery plantings, bamboo fence screens and water feature. The other is under a timber pergola, with “broken glass” light bulbs studding ornate ceiling work while laser-cut screens and planter boxes add sophistication. Then the enormous hub opens up, again anchored with those wonderful “concrete” tiles. The big, sleek kitchen in here has a matte-black sink in a Caesarstone bench, a walk-in pantry, Smeg mod-cons and servery windows to the last-mentioned alfresco. A compact study and a laundry with scads of storage are in another hallway leading to the main bedroom, which has

a box bay window dressed in plantation shutters, a walk-in robe and a swish fully tiled en suite. A glass slider in the spacious bedroom opens to the third (covered) alfresco area with a trio of matte-black ceiling fans. This looks out to verdant lawn rimmed with pretty garden beds and centred with a wishing-well water feature. Automatic sprinkler systems keep all gardens thriving. This unmissable property also has a garden shed and a double garage accessed from a rear laneway. Carole Levy 17 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 20, 2018

Brookfield 107 Black Dog Drive Agent Angel I was shopping around for agents to sell my house and out of the 8 other agents I interviewed Rachel shined above the rest. She has extensive knowledge, Totally straight with me and showed me the facts and there was no telling me just what I wanted to hear. She was always there to answer my every question and text message. It was a very big emotional roller coaster for me but I’m glad Rachel was there every step of the way.

SPORT Desperate Darley’s finals hopes rest on winning ways Darley needs everything to go its way if it is to sneak into the Ballarat Cricket Association finals. After a less than ideal start, the Lions have had to treat every match in the back half of the season as though it were a mini-final – win and the side’s finals hopes remain alive, lose and the season will be seen as one that hasn’t lived up to expectations. On Saturday, the Lions defeated Ballarat-Redan to remain in the finals hunt. Resuming at 0-15 chasing Ballarat-Redan’s 149, the Lions got the runs five wickets down to finish 9-201. Coach Michael Alexander said his side played reasonably well.

“A couple of boys put on a partnership to get the runs, but it was more difficult than we would have liked,” Alexander said. “It turned out to be a tricky chase. We would have liked to get the runs for a couple less wickets. “This season, our batters haven’t been fantastic and we’re still not where we want to be, but we’re getting better.” Bradley Barnes top-scored with 63 for the Lions. Alexander said the Lions could have continued to bat on, but with a finals spot potentially coming down to percentage, they sent Ballarat-Redan back in, looking for quick wickets. Ballarat-Redan finished on 2-26. The Lions are six points and percentage

outside the top four heading into the final round. They need to beat bottom side Brown Hill if they are any chance to make the top four and sneak past either Mt Clear or North Ballarat, who are equal on points. Alexander and his side knows that an outright victory could be the only way. “We can only control what we can do,” he said. “We’ll look at trying to get the six points and then play around with other scenarios.” He said not making finals would be a failure. “We would be bitterly disappointed. It would be a failure with the side we have and what we were able to do last year.” The Lions know better than most teams that

anything can happen in the final round of the season. Two years ago, they entered the final round on top, only to miss out on the finals when results didn’t go their way. The Lions’ seconds sealed a finals spot on Saturday. The Lions’ third and fourth sides won’t play finals, but Alexander said that overall the club continued to improve. “It would be nice to have all four teams finish in the top six, which is still a possibility,” he said. “Depth-wise we’ve been bringing a few kids along.” Tara Murray

Phoenix on the rampage By Tara Murray The new year started on a high for Melton Phoenix with a dominant display in their FFA Cup qualifying match. In its first official match of the year, the FFV state league 5 side was never in trouble against lower-ranked Glen Iris, romping home to a 7-0 win. Jason Hill got the scores going with the only two goals of the first half. Jake Etherton added one after the break, before Michael Kapiris and Connor Krizmanic added doubles. Speaking before the match, new coach Mark Parnis said the players had been hanging out for the real stuff to begin. “It has been long overdue,” he said. “We want to go out there and test where we are at. It was our fifth week of training and we had played four practice matches. We’ve had some mixed results, but we’re starting to gel a bit better.”

Parnis is looking at the season ahead as one of rebuilding and getting confidence back into the squad after a disastrous 2017. Phoenix won just two games, finished bottom of state league 4 west and was relegated to state league 5 west. “We’re trying to rebuild and to consolidate our position,” he said. “With a bit of luck, we might be in consideration for promotion. “We’ve got a few new guys who have come in from various places, which is good. There’s no big names, just giving players a chance. “There’s a couple of boys coming back from injury as well. It’s a real mixed bag.” Parnis said that while there were a few new players, the club was focused on making sure it continued to bring younger players through and give them a chance to show what they can do. Among the players to watch for the Phoenix this season are Krizmanic, Gustavo Arbizu, Chris Vassallo and Tyson Ramon.

“Connor is a young defender who is coming up from the reserves,” Parnis said. “He’s embedded in the seniors at the moment. “Gustavo has played a mix of seniors and reserves before, but is becoming part of the senior set-up. “Chris Vassallo, who has come across from division 2 or 3, is the goalkeeper and had a great game at the weekend. “Tyson Ramon is the back-up keeper and is pushing for a spot, so there’s a bit of competition.” Phoenix will start its FFV state league season on March 24 against Gisborne. Meanwhile, Westside Strikers took the field for the first time, facing Myrtleford Savoy in their FFA Cup qualifying match. The Strikers, who will play in state league 5 west in their debut season, lost 3-0. The draw for round one of the FFA Cup was expected to be available on Monday.

Melton had a day to forget with the bat against Hoppers Crossing in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west competition. Looking to seal a top-two spot, the Lions were left to rue the decision to bat against a side looking to sneak into the top six. The Lions had a number of players reach double figures, but no one was able to go on with it and they were out for 135, with nearly 18 overs remaining. David Kirk top-scored with 22 as seven players scored between 10 and 22 in a disappointing innings. Looking for a few late wickets to get the game back on even terms, the Lions bowled tightly but couldn’t get the breakthroughs they were after. Hoppers Crossing will resume at 1-18, with Brad Jones the wicket-taker for the Lions. Meanwhile, the Lions became the first team confirmed through to the finals, after an appeal into the result of their round 10 match against Ivanhoe. The match ended in a draw after day two of the match was abandoned due to a wet pitch, despite perfect sunshine. The VSDCA found Ivanhoe guilty of not covering the pitch, and awarded Melton the full six points from that game. The decision means the Lions, who are on top and 21 points clear of seventh, can’t fall outside the top six with two rounds remaining. New-look Panthers are on the pre-season prowl Melton South’s new recruits are looking sharp on the track as the Panthers continue to build for the Ballarat Football League season. The Panthers have been busy during the off season, looking to add more depth to the side. Co-coach Ash Manning said there was plenty of good signs early on. “All the recruits are training and looking sharp,” he said. “We’ve probably had 45 to 50 guys on the track, it’s just a matter of getting them all training together. “Everyone’s looking good on the track, but everyone does look good in February.” Former AFL players Farren Ray and Mitch Golby headline the Panthers inclusions, which also include Dillon Sharp, Reece Miles, Matt Sullivan and Dale Houghton.

Manning said Ray and Golby had been good at passing on their knowledge to their teammates. As well as adding a number of key players, Manning said some of the younger players could continue to push for spots. David Callus, Brody Sullivan and Jesse Geddes are training well, while Billy Sullivan is expected to push for a spot as well. In a big boost for the Panthers, Mark Lynch will play on this season. Lynch, who led the Panthers’ midfield last season, has moved to Queensland but will make the commute to play. Manning said despite adding to the midfield depth, they couldn’t afford to lose Lynch. “We expect him to be a key player again,”

he said. “We’ve got a good midfield with him, Golby, Miles, Sullivan, Houghton and Ray. “We’d like another key defender but we think we’ve got most areas covered.” Manning said with so many clubs signing players during the off season, it was hard to gauge where they sat at this point. “It’s a bit of an unknown,” he said. “I’ve done some research and it looks like some of the clubs down the bottom end have improved. “Our first goal is to make finals and then we’ll reassess.” The Panthers will start the season with co-coach Brendan Fevola on the sidelines after he was suspended in the club’s final game last year. The off season hasn’t been without drama

Saints hit their straps By Tara Murray St Anthonys is just starting to hit its straps in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade competition. Sitting in the top three all season and having played some great cricket, Saints skipper Cam Clayton said the team is only just starting to put everything together. “We’ve batted well all year,” he said. “The last four games we’ve been hitting our straps with our bowling and fielding. “We need to keep doing what we’re doing.” The Saints look on track for another victory after day one of their match against Macedon. Clayton was happy with the position they find themselves in. “They won the toss and they elected to bowl,” he said. “They were 4-25 before a bit of a partnership got them to about 115. I thought maybe at that point they had made the right decision to bat. “We then ran through the tail.” Macedon was all out for 168, with the Saints sharing the wickets around. Jason Orr got three wickets, while three other players took two apiece. The Saints took total control of the game and will resume at 1-73 after scoring at more than a run a ball. Clayton said the aim was to ensure they didn’t lose multiple wickets. “The way we looked at it, we just had to keep doing the basics,” he said. “Keep batting the way we have been batting and look for the six points. We lost Justin Siedlecki in the first over and then had a good partnership between Nathan Dantonio and Simon Blanks.” A win against Macedon will help the Saints seal top spot. The Saints sit 1.30 points ahead of second-placed Wallan and Clayton is hoping they can extend that at the weekend with a big win against Macedon. He said the feeling around the club was really good – all top four sides are in the top four of their divisions, while the fifth side is fifth. In other B-grade matches, Eynesbury continues to keep the pressure on the top four. Bowled out for 163 against Gisborne, the Eagles bowlers fought back to have the Dragons 8-102 after day one. Hayden Castle had a good day for the Eagles, making 73 before taking 4-33. In the McIntyre Cup, the stunning form of Madushanka Ekanayaka continued. Coming off 11 and 10 wickets in the Bulls past two two-day matches, Ekanayaka claimed seven wickets on Saturday as Bacchus Marsh ran through Riddell in the top of the table clash. The Bulls bowled the Bombers out for 130. The Bulls were 0-32 at stumps. Diggers Rest Bulla is locked in an interesting match with Lancefield, with both sides trying to avoid relegation. The Tigers made 127, with the Burras 3-48 in reply. Cory Whiteoa in action for St Anthonys on Saturday. (Damjan Janevski) 48 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 20, 2018

for the Panthers with the club refusing to give clearances to contracted players Anthony Hibbert and Mitch Banner who have both put in to go elsewhere. The Panthers are looking for under-19 players after a change of age groups for their junior teams. The Riddell District Football League has increased its age group from under-16.5s to under-17s, meaning a group of players that would have gone up, will remain. Meanwhile the club is looking for a practice match opponent for April 7. Any club interested can contact Ash or the club. Tara Murray

Sports shorts Winter Olympics

The Olympic career of Lydia Lassila has come to a disappointing end, with the former Diggers Rest resident crashing out in the qualifying rounds of the aerials event in PyeongChang. Competing at a record fifth Olympics, Lassila was one of the favourites, having been on the podium in some of the lead-up events. But Lassila was unable to land either of her qualifying jumps and missed out on the final. Lassila ends her career as one of Australia’s most successful aerial skiers, having won Olympic gold and bronze at the previous two Olympics.

VTCA

Caroline Springs moved to the top of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 ladder with an outright victory against Barkly Street Uniting. Having made 3-229 on day one, Caroline Springs bowled Barkly Street Uniting for 69 twice on day two to get the full points and move from fourth to first. The news wasn’t as good for Sydenham-Hillside, which slipped to fifth after losing to Sunshine and now need to win their final match and have other results go their way to make finals.

VTCA

The finals hopes of Melton South Royals are over after being beaten by Melton Centrals by one run in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1 competition. On day two, Royals resumed at 1-41 in reply to 103 but struggled and were bowled out for 102 off just over 47 overs. The Royals sit sixth with one round remaining. The win is Centrals third of the season.

RDFNL

Western Rams are looking for football and netball players ahead of the Riddell District Football Netball League club. The club, which is the junior arm of Rockbank Football Netball Club, fielded one football side last season, the first time in a number of years for the Rams. This year they are looking for players for under-9s, 11s, 13s, 15s and 17s, and netball players from under-11s, 13s, 15s and 17s. For more information, contact Gavin Sporle (football) 0481 912 604 and Alex Smith (netball) 0412 834 480.

MOTOR

Mazda3 colours our world By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring

AT A GLANCE

Mazda, under its Kodo “soul of motion” philosophy in which colour is a prime element of form, has splashed out on a new exotic exterior colour for its popular Mazda3. It follows the success of Soul Red Crystal in the top-selling CX-5 SUV. Since its debut, the colour has proven a fast favourite with customers, involving about 22 per cent of CX-5s sold. Unfortunately, our test vehicle, a Mazda3 Maxx hatchback, was blue, so lacked some of the “soul” imparted by the new hue. Not to worry. The mid-range model at $24,890, plus on-road costs, has much to offer. The Mazda3 range covers six models, all in hatchback and sedan, with two petrol engines and six-speed manual or automatic transmission. In a congested market, it takes more than keen pricing to climb above the crowd. Nobody knows this better than Mazda, so the design of the latest Mazda3 is hardly soulless. A new front grille adds a touch of aggression. Mazda tells us the lower positioning of the Mazda badge and number plate holder hint at a lower centre of gravity. So there. Mazda3 Maxx incorporates MZD Connect, which puts cabin occupants in touch with the internet and provides access to social networking services. Control is via a seven-inch full-colour touchscreen on the central dashboard and multi-function command controller. It offers Bluetooth hands-free phone operation, reception of short text messages, and internet radio such as Aha with access to more than 100,000 broadcasts from around the world. Also featured are DAB+ digital radio, Radio Data System program information and satellite navigation.

MODEL RANGE (hatch and sedan) Mazda3 Neo: $20,490 (manual), $22,490 (automatic) Mazda3 Maxx: $22,890 (manual), $24,890 (automatic) Mazda3 Touring: $25,290 (manual), $27,290 (automatic) Mazda3 SP25: $25,690 (manual), $27,690 (automatic) Mazda3 SP25 GT: $29,990 (manual), $31,990 (automatic) Mazda3 SP25 Astina: $33,490 (manual), $35,490 (automatic) Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Mazda dealer for drive-away prices.

A new hue is the icing on the cake for the best-selling Mazda3. (Supplied)

The 2.0-litre petrol engine with 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque is available on Neo, Maxx and Touring grades. The more powerful 2.5-litre petrol engine, with 138 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque, comes standard on SP25, GT and Astina. Smart city brake support-forward is now standard across the range, while Mazda3 Maxx and all grades above get SCBS-Reverse blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Maximum power of 114 kW from the 2.0-litre motor turns up late in the rev range, at 6000rpm, so the Mazda3 Maxx is in no hurry to get off the mark. In fact, with the pedals symmetrically placed to the left and right of the driver’s centre line, and a hinged organ-type accelerator, driving is altogether an unhurried rather relaxed experience. The drive can be spiced up by the Skyactiv-Drive transmission, which enables the driver to move into Sport mode using the switch on the shift gate.

The new Mazda3 offers improved handling and ride comfort thanks to G-Vectoring Control that improves chassis balance by adjusting engine torque in response to steering inputs and optimising the vertical loading of each tyre. Fuel consumption of the 2.0-litre six-speed automatic hatchback on the combined urban/ highway cycle is a claimed 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres. The test car came up with 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres in town and 4.5 on the highway. The Maxx is well specced for the price, so it’s a matter of sitting down and working out the value for money. Alternatively, just pick the model you like the look of.

49 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 20, 2018

NEWS

Pirelli in pole position for tyre satisfaction Canstar Blue, one of Australia’s best-known rating agencies, has delivered the results of this year’s survey on tyre brands. Pirelli replaces Michelin, last year’s winner, as the highest-rated brand, suggesting there’s truth to the theory that the expensive tyre brands are the best. Not everyone can afford the very best, but there are many cheaper brands that also rated well. How does Canstar Blue arrive at their ratings? From a broad cross-section of 3000 Australians who have purchased tyres within a nominated time frame, the numbers are crunched to arrive at the highest number of five-star ratings across the categories – stopping ability, value for money, life of tyre and dry and wet-weather handling. Pirelli scored highest in overall satisfaction, with five stars in all categories, except life of tyre and value for money, in which it rated four stars. Hankook, Michelin and Toyo Tires rated highest for life of tyre – five stars. Bob Jane and Continental scored the least at three stars, both repeating that score across all categories. Kumho got a solid four stars across all categories, while Maxiis scored fours plus a five-star rating for value for money. Yokohama, Dunlop, Bridgestone and Goodyear received four stars in four categories, but only three in value for money. PRICE GUIDE: Pirelli – From $100 to more than $1500 Bridgestone – Under $80 to more than $800 Dunlop – $80 to $1400 Hankook – $75 to $200 Kumho – $80 to Maxxis – $70 to $400 Michelin – Under $100 to $700 Toyo – $70 to $700 Yokohama – $100 to $600 Bob Jane – $79 to $115 Continental – $90 to $700

MOTOR

Commodore stays true blue By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring We’ve just spent a fascinating two days testing the all-new ZB Commodore on public roads – from Melbourne Airport to San Remo in Victoria’s south. That was followed by a great day at Holden’s Lang Lang Proving Ground, where we could push the cars to their limits in safety. Though it’s slightly smaller than the VF, the ZB is almost as spacious inside, with good seating for four adults, five if the three in the back aren’t too big. Importantly, the ZB Commodore is built on all-new architecture and is about 200 kilograms lighter than the VF, making for more performance and lower fuel consumption. Throttle response in the 2.0-litre engine is pretty good and there’s not too much turbo lag. Nine ratios and quick-acting electronics add to the overall performance of the drivetrain. There’s even torque steer and a few moments of tyre squeal from the front wheels when you get stuck into the loud pedal off the line and get all of those 350 Newton metres pumping out. Great fun! The big-gun in the ZB Commodore powertrain is the 3.6-litre V6 all-wheel-drive high-performance unit. It has plenty of punch. Because you don’t have to spin up a turbocharger, it produces virtually instantaneous throttle response. Some may find it almost too sudden in its off-the-line characteristics. We love it! The V6 makes light work of overtaking and is superbly safe because you spend a minimum of time on the wrong side of the road. Ride comfort is good, though there are times some may find it firmer than they like on the models with the larger diameter wheels. Australian drivers have shown a liking

for good handling and are prepared to give up a little comfort to achieve it. Make sure to test drive the ZB on the sort of roads you will normally be using. Note that the feel does vary from model to model, so ensure that the salesperson gets you into the one you like. There is some tyre noise on coarse chip surfaces, particularly on roads that have recently been redone. Having said that, we have driven many European prestige cars

that produce more tyre noise than this new Commodore. Handling sees it able to corner at higher speeds than most owners are ever likely to attempt. There’s very good throttle control, something that’s offered even on the best front-wheel-drive cars these days. Holden engineers are pretty good at setting it up. All in all, the fifth-generation Holden

Commodore is an excellent road car that’s very much suited to Australian conditions, be they in the suburbs or out in the wide, empty outback. Some Holden lovers have already formed opinions on the new Commodore sight unseen and not always favourably. We’ll finish our review by adding the words of Holden chief Mark Bernhard: “May I suggest they drive the car – then form their opinion.”
