Pigeon price flies high Pigeon enthusiasts across Melbourne have been turning their eyes west, with Pigeon Radio Australia holding its annual auction for the Good Friday Appeal. The auction has been held for the past three years to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital, and kicked off this year with a donated pigeon from Belgium that sold for $6000. Ivan Forti helped care for the bird in Melton, and is now busy preparing more pigeons to auction. “We’ve had that Belgian bird sold, and now we have the Australian birds being listed,” Mr Forti said. “We’ll have three up for auction every two weeks. The first auction of the Belgian bird was a great result for the cause. Six thousand is quite a lot by Australian standards, but internationally you see some birds go for more than $1 million.” In previous years the auctions have raised up to $12,000, but Mr Forti said this year the hope was to increase that to $20,000. It’s a cause close to the heart of the Melton pigeon racing community. “One of the guys on the radio show with me, his grandson was born with heart problems so he’s been going to the Children’s Hospital for years,” Mr Forti said. Capital works splurge By Ewen McRae More than $60 million in capital works is at the forefront of Melton council’s draft budget. The budget projects a surplus of $8.5 million and includes significant investment in roads, leisure facilities and community buildings. Mayor Bob Turner said the council had listened to residents when drafting the budget – and the investment in community facilities reflected that. “This is a strong and responsible draft budget

with an exciting and diverse mix of projects that cater to residents across the city,” Cr Turner said. “I’m particularly proud that we have put forward such a significant capital works program that is set to help improve everything from local roads for motorists to leisure facilities for young families. “A number of residents and community groups provided a valuable extra insight into local priorities and the potential impact of a range of budget allocations.”

Significant projects across the next 12 months include completion of the Aintree Children’s and Community Centre ($1.35 million), design of the Eynesbury Station Early Learning Centre ($1.2 million), intersection works at Taylors Road/Westwood Drive ($2.5 million), Macpherson Park redevelopment stages 1-3 ($4.25 million) and Cobblebank Indoor Stadium construction stage 1 ($3 million). The Cobblebank stadium will have capacity for up to six basketball courts. The proposed budget also includes significant

investment in new and renewed roads ($19.2 million), buildings ($18.78 million), footpaths and cycle-ways ($1.09 million), as well as improvements to library book stock, street trees and lighting and public art. An overall 2.5 per cent rate rise is proposed in line with state government rate capping. Residents are invited to have their say on the draft budget by making a written submission before 5pm on May 1. Information about submissions can be found at melton.vic.gov.au/budget1920.

Council bins hard rubbish plan By Ewen McRae Moorabool council will not provide residents with vouchers for hard rubbish disposal at its transfer stations. The council last week rejected an officer recommendation that it provide a voucher for use at one of the council’s transfer stations with each rates notice. The cost of the vouchers, $25, would be passed on to ratepayers as part of their annual rates. Councillor Tonia Dudzik argued that the

vouchers would lead to less dumped rubbish around the municipality. “Tip vouchers are commonplace in most councils around the place, and the community expects them,” Cr Dudzik said. “It will help reduce the amount of dumped rubbish that we do have in the community. “All you have to do is drive down some of our beautiful countryside and see all the rubbish on the side of the road. “If every resident was provided with a tip voucher, chances are that dumped rubbish would be less.”

‘‘

This puts a compulsion on everyone to pay for this - Tom Sullivan

’’

However the council rejected the proposal because of concerns about uptake and imposing a cost on all residents. Councillor Tom Sullivan said asking everyone in Moorabool to foot the bill for the vouchers was irresponsible. “It encourages more waste generation.

“We could actually see a situation where we try to reduce waste going to landfill but create more,” Cr Sullivan said. He claimed only about 22-25 per cent of residents use the transfer stations, which left 75 per cent of ratepayers that don’t use them. “This puts a compulsion on everyone to pay for this. “It’s not forward thinking and I don’t think we should do it,” Cr Sullivan said. The council was split on the issue, with mayor Paul Tatchell’s vote resulting in the recommendation being defeated.

Status quo for meeting records

Ready, set, go for the red carpet Shev Kelly has worked with celebrities here and internationally, and now she’s settled in Melton and hoping to spread her knowledge. Ms Kelly has worked as a makeup artist for years, slowly building her business to the point where she has attended fashion shows in New York, London and Paris. Along the way she has plied her trade with Australian actress Margot Robbie and Sting, Usher and Chris Brown. “I’m a freelance makeup artist, and that means I can go to people’s houses or they can come to mine, but I’ve also got the freedom to

pursue interesting things overseas as well,” Ms Kelly said. “I’ve done work for magazines, photoshoots, music videos, Youtube things, so I’ve got my hand in all the cookie jars. “I’ve got this mentality of dreaming for the stars and just going for it, so a lot of hard work is needed and it’s still hard to maintain all that. “I’ve done work with Chris Brown and Sting for their concerts, I’ve done a lot of work with [Melbourne Cup winning jockey] Michelle Payne, and Margot Robbie before some of her media commitments.”

Now settled in Melton, Ms Kelly is hoping to run workshops to help locals make better use of their makeup and also pass on some of the tips she’s picked up from 20 years in the business. “I like to enhance natural features,” she said. “I like to see people naturally enhanced, so the workshops I’m kind of targeting the everyday woman and teaching her some backstage tips and tricks and red carpet secrets.” Contact Shevrolet@yahoo.com for more information on upcoming workshops. Moorabool council will not video stream council meetings after a proposal to explore the idea was voted down at last week’s meeting. The council received a report detailing a number of options for video streaming, including internal and external recording teams, Facebook or YouTube live streaming or continuing with the current arrangements of just audio recording meetings. In favour of introducing video streaming, Cr Jarrod Bingham said it would help make the council more open to the public. “Due to the rising cost of living, we are seeing a number of residents working longer hours, which may hinder them from attending council meetings,” he said. “In this day and age of busy lifestyles, I see this as a great way forward for accessibility.” But concerns voiced by Cr Tom Sullivan and others over what could be broadcast ultimately led to the motion being defeated. “I think the downside ultimately outweighs the positives in my view,” Cr Sullivan said. “We have guests and residents come and present. And we’ve had it happen in the past where people may say inappropriate things in the council chamber, and if that were picked up by a video camera it could have a severe adverse effect. “We have a broader role with providing good governance, not just good theatre.” Ewen McRae

Protesters blockaded Westside Meats in Bacchus Marsh on Monday as part of a nationwide protest. About 5am on April 8, up to six protesters parked a van across the entrance to the business and chained themselves to the van. Workers were forced to park down the street and walk in. The protesters displayed a banner for an animal cruelty documentary, which was released last year. Similar protests occurred in Laverton and Geelong, while a larger group blocked the intersection of Flinders and Swanston streets in the CBD, creating peak hour havoc.

To further heighten the sensory experience, the Woodgrove centre will supply a large-scale bubble dome.

Week two of the holidays will feature kids-in-the-kitchen action. Centre manager Kylie Robertson said the food fare would be a great chance for families to have fun. “We are thrilled to be able to give our inquisitive little mini-shoppers a chance to explore and learn new things about themselves and their favourite foods through our two new school holiday programs,” she said Week one activities will take place outside Big W and the week two events will be held outside Coles. A Darley man will face court in June on three counts of rape and one each of unlawful imprisonment, intentionally and recklessly causing injury, and theft. Robert Wilson, 32, faced the Magistrates Court on April 5 in relation to allegations he imprisoned a 39-year-old woman in his home between March 25 and 29. It is alleged he repeatedly raped and assaulted her and asked if she wanted to die while he held a crossbow to her head. The woman told police she met Wilson on a dating app two months ago. Wilson did not apply for bail and will remain in custody until his next court date on June 28.

City wants progress on highway By Ewen McRae A push to upgrade the Western Highway is gathering steam. Melton council’s Upgrade Western Highway campaign calls on the state and federal governments to upgrade the highway to urban freeway standard within the city of Melton. Melton’s Transport Community Reference Group has joined the cause. Reference group member Madeleine Connor said the community recognised the need for major improvements to the highway. “Rapid population growth is placing huge demands on existing roads,” Ms Connor said. “Urgent upgrades are needed to improve commuter safety, reduce congestion, and prevent the Western Highway from becoming gridlocked.” The campaign calls for upgrades including interchanges at Bulmans and Mount Cottrell roads and a pedestrian overpass at Arnolds Creek. It includes road improvement works and the removal of at-grade infrastructure, such as bus stops and driveways, between Deer Park and Melton West; as well as planning for additional lanes, an interchange at Harkness Road and an overpass at Paynes Road. Melton mayor Bob Turner said growth in the region needed some forward thinking and asked residents to join the fight by signing an official petition. “The number of vehicles on the Western Highway will rise from 60,000 today, to 113,000 over the next 20 years,” Cr Turner said. “The more signatures we collect, the louder our voice will be. The louder our voice, the harder we will be to ignore.” View the petition at catchup.org.au/melton

Everyone’s ready to relay More than 200 people will descend on Melton’s Tabcorp Park this weekend for the annual Relay For Life, and they’re hoping for a record breaking tally. The event, which raises funds for the Cancer Council, will feature about 10 teams walking around the track from 4pm on April 13 until 10am April 14. Entertainment and activities throughout the event will help keep spirits and enthusiasm high. Organising committee chairperson Ian Hancock said it was an important cause for the community to rally around. “We’ve got more than 200 people taking part this year so it’s just as big as ever,” Mr Hancock said. “We’ll have events, music, stalls, lots to keep people interested. Our theme this year is ‘Relay Around the World’, so each team will pick a country and dress up as that for the relay and add something different to the event. “We get more people every year taking part, because more and more people are touched by cancer in some way.” The main entertainment on the night will be Kiss tribute band Kiss Thiss, which will perform a full set of rock classics from the iconic band in full makeup and costume. Mr Hancock said the aim was to raise up to $60,000 from the event. Ewen McRae

Caroline Springs hot on solar By Ewen McRae Caroline Springs has one of the highest uptakes of solar power in the state, according to new figures. According to the Clean Energy Regulator, there have been 4308 installations of solar panels in Caroline Springs since 2010 – the sixth most in Victoria suburbs. Fellow western suburbs Hoppers Crossing (8170) and Werribee (6899) were also among

the top 10 installers of solar panels, while Cranbourne (8245) topped the state. Other top performing suburbs included Craigieburn (5185), Narre Warren (4363), Pakenham (3632) and Berwick (3410), while rural areas such as Waurn Ponds (3839) and Epsom (3406) rounded out the top 10. Nic Frances Gilley, chief executive of solar-focused electricity provider DC Power Co, said growth in the western suburbs was a key driver in pushing up solar installations.

“There’s a perception that it’s an inner-city thing to do, but it’s actually the outer suburban areas like Caroline Springs and surrounds that are the biggest supporters,” he said. “If you look at boom areas where there are a lot of new builds, to get the star rating that you need on your building, it makes sense to get solar. “Our research says about 70 per cent of people get solar panels to help the environment, but 80 per cent also say it’s to save money.”

According to Mr Frances Gilley, about 20 per cent of Australians now have solar power, with that number expected to climb to nearly 50 per cent by 2050. “We don’t really know how long it will take to get to that 50 per cent mark – it depends a lot on what governments do and how pricings change, but we do expect to get there eventually,” Mr Frances Gilley said. “That’s more than double what we’ve got now so that’s a fantastic outcome.”

On the Hunt for honour team to their fourth state title in five years. “I enjoy teaching the girls at school some of the things I’ve learned in state teams so hopefully some of that rubs off,” Arleah said. “The sport is getting bigger in Victoria, and the growth of women’s rugby league in the past 10 years has been huge. “I’d definitely like to play in the NRL Women’s competition one day, it would be great to see the women’s comp looked at in the same way that people look at the men’s. Hopefully I can get to that stage.” Ewen McRae

Arleah Hunt may be one the brightest rugby league talents in the state, but she’s keeping her feet firmly planted. The Melton Secondary College student was recognised recently at the Victorian School Sports Awards, being presented with a Sporting Blue, the highest accolade in school sports. Despite a long list of achievements in the past 12 months, the 16-year-old said she was shocked when she heard she had won. “It was a bit of a surprise,” she said. “I know quite a lot of rugby players, so to win this ahead of them was a real shock. “I’m pretty proud, because it’s not an award that is just given out for nothing.” In 2018, Arleah was selected to captain the Victorian under-16 rugby league team, represented Victoria at under-19 level, organised multiple rugby clinics for primary school students, and coached the schools junior girls’ rugby team to win the Robbie Kearns Shield as state champions. Square’s fresh food makeover By Tate Papworth The new and improved CS Square Shopping Centre has officially opened its doors. The $45 million upgrade boasts a host of new stores with an additional 6500 square metres of retail space. Among the fresh new stores are Woolworths, Priceline, The Reject Shop and Pacific Smile. The new Woolworths store will also offer a significant boost to employment for the local community, with 120 team members required. Woolworths says the store has been specifically designed to meet the needs of Caroline Springs residents and will include artisan breads, a marketplace feel to fruit and vegetables, an extensive selection of deli products, an array of fresh seafood, an in-store sushi counter and made-to-order cakes. Woolworths Supermarkets Victoria general manager Andrew Hall said it was one of the first Woolworths stores to trial the neighbourhood food store concept. “Woolworths Caroline Springs marks an evolution in our journey to create a neighbourhood food store, with the needs of the local customers at the forefront of its design,” he said. “This store is only the third of its kind in Victoria and will not only provide a great shopping experience for local customers, but also good prices on products they want, a great fresh offer and the convenience they are looking for in their busy lives.” Parking at the centre has also been improved. An additional 240 carparks have been added, bringing the total number of parking spaces to 1175. The works are stage three of the centre’s

Mayor’s Message

Easter and Anzac Day opening hours

Cr Bob Turner It’s budget season, with the details of both Council’s 2019/20 draft budget and the Federal Budget 2019 being released last week. Locally, I’m proud of our significant investment of $62.4 million in capital works projects, delivering new and renewed roads, buildings, recreation, leisure and community facilities, footpath and bike lanes, library resources, street tree-planting and lighting, and public art.

Across the Easter long weekend, Council civic centre and library opening hours and waste collection days will be altered. Residents can call Council’s 24 hour phone service on 9747 7200 and a Council officer will contact you during business hours. If the matter is urgent, the operator will connect you to Council’s emergency after hours paging service.

Of these projects, the highlights include the Aintree Children’s and Community Centre, intersection works at Taylors Road and Westwood Drive, the design of the Eynesbury Station Early Learning Centre and the redevelopment of Macpherson Park. It’s a diverse and exciting mix of projects that will help meet the needs of our growing community. For more information on the budget and to have your say visit: melton.vic.gov.au/budget1920

On a national level, the Federal Government’s budget has failed to support our City and its critical infrastructure demands. Despite recent positive discussions and the presentation of our case to the Federal Government about the Western Highway Upgrade, our concerns about the safety and capacity of this important arterial road have not been addressed. The fact is we are one of the nation’s fastest growing municipalities and this road is of national significance. Funding this project would not only create local jobs, but also improve the safety and congestion problems local and other drivers experience on a daily basis. Please sign the petition at catchup.org.au/melton to keep it on the federal funding agenda. To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au

Waste collection There will be NO GARBAGE, RECYCLING OR GREEN WASTE COLLECTIONS on Good Friday, 19 April. Collections will take place on the following day, Saturday 20 April. All other collection days over the Easter long weekend and on ANZAC Day are as normal.

Melton Recycling Facility The Melton Recycling Facility will be CLOSED on Good Friday and Anzac Day.

Civic Centre and libaries The Melton Library and Learning Hub (McKenzie Street, Melton); Caroline Springs Library and Learning Hub (Caroline Springs Boulevard) and the Melton Civic Centre (High Street, Melton) will all be closed from Good Friday, 19 March, to Easter Monday, 22 April. They will also be closed on Anzac Day, Thursday 25 April.

Animal management The Melton Pound will be closed on the Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday public holidays, but will be open between 9.30am-10.30am Saturday 20 April.

Cr Michelle Mendes The draft budget was passed at last week’s Council meeting and is now open for public comment. I am proud of what the budget proposes and the consultation work that has been completed in partnership with the community, but we still need your input to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our City, now and into the future. Watts Ward residents will be pleased to hear that the construction of playgrounds at the Bloomsbury Drive Reserve and Morton Homestead, and the construction of stages 1 and 3 of the Macpherson Park redevelopment are included in the budget, as well as soon-to-commence work on the much-needed extension to the Diggers Rest Preschool. With State Government funding of $350,000 in addition to Council’s budget of $979,000, the work on the

Diggers Rest Preschool will create a larger learning space and an additional 33 kindergarten places for three and four-year old children. It’s a great win for the rapidly growing Diggers Rest community and one I am very pleased about. Finally, thank you and congratulations to everyone who attended or was involved in this year’s Harmony Day celebrations at Morton Homestead. As always, the event was rich in colour, joy and smiling faces and it was an honour to attend on behalf of the people of Watts Ward. I am so proud of our diverse but inclusive community; events like this really extend a warm welcome to residents, both new and old. MY PLACE Helen Lyne is the leader of the Melton Parkinson’s Support Group. She spoke with Ewen McRae. What is your connection to the region? After renting in Bacchus Marsh for two years my family bought a home in 1978 in Darley. My two children attended Darley Primary School. What do you like best about the area? Our neighbours and friends, and here in Bacchus Marsh clinging on to that friendly country town atmosphere. What could make the area better?

Budget doesn’t add up By Ewen McRae The Melton and Moorabool regions have been left behind in last week’s federal budget, according to council and local MPs. Melton mayor Bob Turner said it was disappointing to see infrastructure projects such as the Western Highway upgrade overlooked. “We recently presented our case for the Western Highway Upgrade to the federal government and I’m extremely disappointed that our concerns haven’t been heard,” Cr Turner said. “The Western Highway Upgrade is urgently needed to improve safety, serve Melton’s

rapidly-growing population, and create jobs in the west. “I’m concerned that Melton residents and all users of the Western Highway have been forgotten in this budget.” Cr Turner said without federal input, there were limits on what the council could do. “The city of Melton needs the federal government to invest in vital infrastructure, education, employment opportunities and sports and recreation facilities now,” Cr Turner said. Meanwhile, Federal Member for Ballarat, Catherine King, said vital projects in the Moorabool region, such as the Bacchus Marsh sports hub, deserved federal attention.

“None of these important projects have been considered worthy of funding by the Morrison Liberal government,” Ms King said. “Indeed, the only mention of Ballarat in the budget papers is $10 million for the Ballarat to Ouyen corridor. “This hardly meets the needs of our growing region. “In contrast, Liberal-held and marginal seats around us received far more attention with billions going to the Geelong region and the hundreds of millions to the electorate of Wannon. “Residents of the electorate of Ballarat are right to expect that they are given their fair share of national funding.” Street artist George Rose works on the mural. A giant mural that will feature elements of Melton’s natural environment is set to be unveiled in Ravenhall. As part of the Summer of Street Art program, renowned street artist George Rose has been busy creating the 20-metre wide mural on the rear façade of a building on a freeway entrance in Ravenhall. Incorporating floral emblems from other nations, as well as Australian native plants and animals, the mural is a true representation of the Melton area and its people, says Rose “A large number of Melton residents were born overseas, so I’ve decided to focus on the flora of this area intermingled with the national emblems representing some of those countries,” Rose said. “In the mural you’ll see lotus from India, Arabian Jasmine from the Philippines, the silver fern of New Zealand, Maltese centaury for Malta and the chrysanthemum for Vietnam. “Beyond these, I wanted to celebrate native biodiversity and focus on how vulnerable and in need of our protection it is.” The mural is expected to be completed by mid-April. Ewen McRae

Rebates ready for water works Local MP Steve McGhie is urging more people to take up a rebate program to help reduce their water bills. Since 2015, Victorian urban water corporations have delivered the government-funded Community Rebate Program to assist vulnerable customers and those experiencing hardship. Through the program, water corporations will send someone out to a customer’s house to replace a showerhead, change to a dual or low flush toilet, install flow control devices or repair or fix inefficient water fittings. All costs are covered up-front by the grants program. More than 290 Western Water customers have already taken up the program. Mr McGhie said many customers report having water leaks or inefficient appliances but are unable to afford the cost of repair or replacement. “While changes like altering a showerhead may seem minor, over time these changes can make a huge difference to residential water usage and water bills,” he said. “I encourage all residents of Melton to think about how they can use water more effectively and contact Western Water to find out if you are eligible for the rebate program.” Ewen McRae

Melton Council on Monday night decided to go ahead with a proposal to buy land west of Ferris Road for use as a future tip. But the council wants to buy only 50 acres of 184 acres offered for sale by Norton Court Pty Ltd.

Melton’s FM radio station 3-RIM will soon be heard all over Melbourne following the installation of a new radio tower and a unique transmitter. The $60,000 project, which was recently completed, means better radio reception for Melton residents and a quality rivaling that of a compact disc player.

Melton council has rejected an independent panel’s recommendation that it abandon plans for a proposed factory outlet centre in Ferris Road, Melton. The council voted to adopt amendments to the Melton planning scheme at a special meeting last Wednesday, which will allow Federation Outlets to build the factory.

The residents of Gloaming Ride and Thrice Lane have said no – twice – but face further uncertainty as other residents of Kurunjang have a say on the future of their streets.

Sitting in a quiet court, this orderly house – compact front yard, cosmopolitan veneer, two-car garage – is designed for trouble-free living. A carpeted lounge room just off the entry hall, its windows pulling in light, is partially screened from the street by flourishing yuccas. From here, tiled floors lead to a large living area arranged around a kitchen, where coffee-toned splashback and cabinetry warm the clean lines of stainless-steel appliances and the breakfast island. Just outside the living zone, the backyard has hassle-free artificial lawn, pebbled beds and shrubs, while on the south of the building, a paved, covered pergola is perfect for entertaining and play. With the kitchen and two bedrooms facing this area, family, guests and pets using it, are always within sight. Back inside, the main bedroom is carpeted and faces north, as does its retreat-like en suite. Here, an above-counter basin graces the vanity while pebble-stripped tiles embellish the shower. A second bathroom near the living area echoes these features but has a large tub, as well. Ducted heating, cooling and an alarm system are also included. The family can stroll to the local primary school and childcare centre or take a short car ride to Woodgrove shopping complex – it’s that simple.

Surrounded by an established garden with landscaped lawns, rocks and meandering pathways, this elegant period house has been updated with both style and comfort in mind. Ash timber floors pair with white-washed walls and high ceilings, classic cornices and coal-coloured accents throughout most of the house. These touches are reflected in the formal lounge room’s fireplace and in the chandelier over the dining table. The kitchen has white cabinetry, modern appliances and a honey-comb patterned splashback. Large windows in the family living zone frame the extensive backyard and face a decked pergola. All four bedrooms have uninterrupted views of the outdoors, while the main also has an en suite and walk-in robe. The house also has an airy family bathroom, double garage, ducted heating and cooling. A primary school and childcare centre are a stroll away.

Just four years old, this four-bedroom house is just the canvas for a growing family who’d like to create a haven. Dove grey pillars, chocolate brickwork and white trim frame the front facade, and this palette is repeated inside. To the right of the entrance hall there is a bright lounge room with soft carpeting while slimline windows, hung with sheer and blockout roller blinds, usher in abundant sunlight and overlook the front yard.

Pale floor tiles lead from here to an expansive meals and family living area surrounding a kitchen. Sleek cabinets finished in shiny white, stone benchtops, stainless-steel oven and dishwasher, as well as a walk-in pantry, make concocting favourite meals in this zone, a cinch. Just beyond a bank of windows and through a glass slider there’s a paved, entertainment area and a comfortable backyard enclosed with Colourbond fences.

Back inside, a study alcove sits close to the main bedroom, which is fitted with cream carpets, a walk-in robe and an impressive en suite. This has twin vanity sinks, a double shower and, for those who prefer being extra discreet, a toilet tucked away behind a closed door. Clustered near a bright family bathroom that has similar finishes, the other three bedrooms are also carpeted and have built-in robes. Other inclusions are a lock-up double

By Tara Murray It was a tough day on the scoreboard for Rockbank on Saturday, but there was still plenty to celebrate as Tom Mainey pulled on the boots for game 350. Mainey, who has played at the club since his junior days, became just the second Rams player to reach the milestone. “It’s getting a little bit harder to get up every year, but I can’t wait for round one,â€? he said before the game. “I’ve played juniors and seniors at the club, I’ve been here since I was 10 or 11. A lot of it’s about loyalty to the volunteers at the club. “Players come and go every year, that’s the way footy is now. It’s about the committee and the members who do the hard work. It’s about guys like Gav [Sporle] and Smithy [Mark Smith] ‌ Volunteers are few and far between.â€? Mainey had a little bit of success in his junior days, but it’s been a tough slog for him and the Rams at a senior level. He said playing finals in 2014 had been one of the major highlights in his time at the club. “We haven’t had the best of luck and always seemed to struggle,â€? he said. Mainey joins rare company at Rockbank, with current teammate Saxon Woodroffe the only other player to reach the 350 game milestone. “I didn’t play juniors with him, but I’ve played about 13 years of seniors with him,â€? Mainey said. “Hopefully I can stick around for a few more years and beat his record.â€? Mainey said Rockbank was hoping to make some improvements this year. “We will come up against sides able to spend a lot more than we can,â€? he said. “We’re more looking at effort and making sure we’re not blown away in games.â€?

Riddell Umpires are in need of help. The association is short on umpires this season and is looking for people to get involved to help cover the growing number of matches. The association’s Harley Darmanin said they have 110 umpires for this season, well down on the 160 they finished last season with. The association provides umpires for senior and junior matches in the Riddell District Football League, along with club 18 games and AFL Goldfields women’s and girls matches that fall in the playing region. “We’re looking short, especially for juniors and women’s matches, Darmanin said. “There’s been a lot of Sunday match growth with female football and juniors and we need more umpires. Darmanin said they had lost some of their senior umpires to the VFL, while others hadn’t returned due to work and family commitments. He said they were short mostly of boundary and field umpires. All umpires are paid. Darmanin said an umpire could earn $1 a minute for officiating at a junior match on a Sunday. If more umpires aren’t found it could be left to clubs to find umpires or the association would have to get umpires across from the Ballarat Umpires Association. SPORT Phoenix players rise to the challenge of a tough game Melton Phoenix has got reward for effort with its second win of the FFV state league 5 west season. After dropping a match it could have won the previous round, the Phoenix hit back with a 1-0 win against Balmoral on Saturday. Phoenix coach Mark Parnis said his players delivered when they needed to. “It was a tough game,” he said. “We stood up to every challenge and could have easily scored another one or two goals. We got the result we wanted and we are travelling OK.” Sergio Tapia was the goalscorer for the Phoenix. Parnis said the early rounds were always challenging as he and the players got a read on the competition. Melton Phoenix is one of five teams that have two victories from the opening three rounds. “We’ve done pretty well … we’ve been competitive against all the sides we’ve played,”

Parnis said. “We were a bit unfortunate to have had a loss – we could have had a win in that game.” Melton’s start to the season looks even better when the number of injuries it’s dealing with is taken into account. Parnis said the club had 13 players injured heading into round one, including eight from the senior team. “We’re not trying to make it an issue,” he said. “We’ve put some young guys on the park and they have stood up quite well. “Looking at the list, we might be three or four away from being full strength. Some will be out longer than others.” Parnis said the key to the side’s success so far and ability to adjust to changes each week, had been the strong bond between the players. He said everyone involved was on the same page, which made coaching a lot easier. “Just to see how the young ones and the new

ones have fitted in is really good,” he said. “The culture is good and there’s a good leadership group. The communication is really good between all the players.” The Phoenix will this week face Barwon, before playing Deakin Ducks and Maidstone in the following weeks. Parnis said all three matches would be tough. In state league 4 west, Spring Hills suffered its first loss of the season, 3-1 to Bell Park. Blake D’Antino was the goalscorer for the Stallions. Westside Strikers suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of North Melbourne Athletic. The loss is the Strikers’ first of the season. They drew their first two matches. Caroline Springs George Cross remains winless in state league 1 north-west. On Saturday, the Georgies lost 3-2 to FC Clifton Hill. Tara Murray

Burras on right track By Tara Murray A new-look Diggers Rest side has had a tough start to the Riddell District Netball League season with a big loss to Rupertswood. With three new players and one player returning after not playing last season, the Burras were always going to take time to settle. A red-hot Sharks side proved too strong for the Burras in the second half on Saturday, winning 54-27. Burras’ coach Pam Strong said that while it wasn’t the start they were after, her players had been competitive. “You could tell with some of our combinations we were still settling,” she said. “We lost our wing attack three weeks ago and we’re trying to fill that void. “They [Rupo] had a few players who came up from within the club, so they all play the same style. “We’ve got a new goalkeeper, a new goal attack and a new centre. They all play different styles. It’s about bringing those styles together. “I think we will be right next week.” Kathy Dicker was the pick of the shooters for the Burras, with 16 goals, but all three goalers struggled with accuracy. Last year, the Burras had a tough season that was ruined by injuries. Strong said they had a lot more depth this year. Monika Dimovski, who has played in the Victorian Netball League, gives the side another shooting option. Strong has previously coached Dimovski, who has played with Burras captain Shelby Strong. Nicole Isles has come across from the Sunbury Lions, where she was part of their B-grade side. Young defender Heidi Cole will add to the defensive end, having moved from Geelong to Melbourne to study. Strong was pleased with how Cole performed when introduced in the second half. Tayla Behan has returned to the Burras after having her first child last season. Strong said that despite the first-up loss, a key for the Burras remained getting early wins on the board. This week they will face Riddell, which is coming off a big loss. “Hopefully, we are injury free this year, that is a big thing,” Strong said. “The second half [of the season] we lose a lot of players, so we have to work hard to get wins early.” In other matches, Woodend-Hesket had a big win against Lancefield. After an even first half, the Hawks took their game to another

Bacchus Marsh’s Madushanka Ekanayaka and Romsey’s Taylor Stevenson have shared the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s top individual honour, the Sullivan Medal. The two finished equal on 15 votes. Bacchus Marsh’s Alex Porter finished third, a further two votes back. Gisborne pair Jakson Knight and Recordo Gordon rounded out the top five. Ekanayaka claimed the McIntyre Cup bowling award, while Porter took out the batting award. In a big night for the Bulls, premiership-winning captain James Lidgett was named captain of the team of the year.

Caroline Springs has made a smooth transition into men’s Vic League 3. Stepping up to the higher grade for the first time, the Lakers had an 11-1 win against Old Melburnians. A second-half comeback by the Western Jets fell short against the Calder Cannons on Saturday. After trailing by 15 points at half-time, the Jets reduced the margin to three points at the last break. Rampaging Bears dish up a season-starter thumping

Josh Covelli kicked eight goals on Friday night. (Mark Wilson)

Burnside Heights sent an early statement to other sides in the Essendon District Football League division 2 competition. Starting the season under lights on Friday night against a bit of an unknown Jacana side, the Bears came away with a mammoth win that no one saw coming. Bears’ president Justin Peagram said that while they were confident of getting the win, the 23.9 (147)-12.11 (83) scoreline was thrilling. “The boys were confident, but not that confident,” he said. “We surprised a few people. “We were against the wind in the first quarter and we said the key for us was to kick goals against the wind. “We got the first couple of goals … I think we scored nine goals against the wind and they only scored three.” Peagram said it was an even performance across the board, with no real individual four-quarter efforts. He said a lot of players

ran out of legs in the second half, as sometimes happened in round one. Spearhead Joshua Covelli won the battle of the key forwards, kicking eight goals to the four of Jacana’s Cameron Cloke. Adam Sullivan, playing in the midfield, kicked four goals, while Jordan Hughes, Corey Patmore, Kristian Rocci and Nick Morda were all solid contributors. Eight new faces made their debuts for the Bears on Friday night. They included Danny Grantham, Rocci, Matthew Brown, Matthew Peterlechner and Matthew Busuttil. Peagram said the addition of those players had given the club extra depth. He said the Bears were aiming to make finals for the first time this year after last year delivering their best season ever. He said they had put together a list in the past few years they thought could take them to

finals and that coach Aidan Stott had worked hard to develop the squad. “We’ve built a team based on guys that can play a role week in, week out. “We’ve built the list – now we have to put up or shut up. This is our chance.” In other division 2 matches, Sunbury Kangaroos made a winning start to their time in the EDFL by beating Northern Saints 17.7 (109)-12.10 (82), Coburg Districts defeated East Sunbury 14.10 (94)-10.13 (73) and Hadfield was too good for Keilor Park 29.17 (191)-3.2 (20). In division 1, Hillside overcame a slow start against Oak Park to win 20.12 (132)-9.8 (62). Brandon Coletta kicked six goals for the Sharks and Jordan Sinclair kicked five. West Coburg was too good for Roxburgh Park, East Keilor smashed Taylors Lakes and Tullamarine got home against Westmeadows. Tara Murray

Burras break drought By Tara Murray Diggers Rest ended a losing streak against Rupertswood on Saturday in the Riddell District Football League. The Burras were quite aware that they hadn’t beaten the Sharks since round five in 2016 and were keen to make sure the streak didn’t continue. At three-quarter time, the Sharks looked the better team after a good third quarter, but the Burras had other ideas. A six goal to nil final quarter ended the drought, with the Burras winning 12.12 (84)-8.8 (56). Burras’ coach Jamie Lobb said it was good to tick off one of their aims for the season early on. “We hadn’t beat them since round 5 2016 before today, it’s something we spoke about before the game,” he said. “We know they are a quality side and it would be an arm wrestle all day, we just had to make sure we controlled it when they got on top. “We did that sometimes and other times didn’t get on top of it quick enough. “We had them for most of the last quarter.” Lobb said the benefits of having a really good pre-season on the track had shown through in the last quarter when it was needed. “A few of their guys may have told us we were old and slow at three-quarter time, it wasn’t the case coming in the last quarter.” Deven Costigan kicked five goals for the Burras. Lobb said Stuart Clarke was best on ground in his 200th match. Clarke kicked two goals, including the one to put them in front in the last quarter. “You can’t question Stu,” Lobb said. “I gave him best on ground. His impact around the contest was massive. “He is probably the hardest worker at the club and has been around for a long time. We put a bit of an emphasise on milestone games, so we didn’t want to lose it.” Lobb said Alec Del Papa and Lukey Delahey in their first games for the club were good, as was Sean Egan in the ruck. The win is a vital one for the reigning premiers, who have a tough start to the season. They face Riddell in the grand final rematch this weekend, before facing Wallan the following week. David Morrice, who missed the game against his old side through suspension, is expected to return to face the Bombers. In other results, Melton Centrals had a day out against Rockbank, winning 35-10 (220)-0.2 (2). Dylan Weir kicked 12 goals in a best on ground performance for the winners, as half the team hit the scoreboard. Macedon won the Puka Up Cup for a second straight year, beating Riddell 11.9 (75)-8.13 (61). Woodend-Hesket outplayed Lancefield, winning 18.17 (125)-4.1 (25), while there was no surprises as Wallan beat Broadford, 25.21 (171)-8.11 (59). 28 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 9, 2019

Melton secures top team tag Melton Thoroughbreds cemented their spot among the top teams with a hard-fought win against Melbourne University Black Angels in Big V women’s division 2. The Thoroughbreds took an early lead in the first quarter, before the Black Angels turned the tables in the second quarter, to lead by six points at half-time. The Thoroughbreds ate into the lead in the third quarter, before a 20-10 final term sealed the 69-61 win. There were no standouts on the scoring end for the Thoroughbreds, with Jenna Conroy top scoring with 12 points. The Thoroughbreds sit third after four rounds with a 3-1 record, one of five teams with a similar win-loss count. It was a tough weekend for the men’s side, which was thumped by Craigieburn Eagles on Saturday night. Just two points separated the sides after an even first half, before the Eagles upped the anti in the second half. They more than doubled the Thoroughbreds score in both the third and fourth quarters, going on to win 109-70. Paul Nikoloff-King top scored with 12 points. The side sits sixth, with a 3-2 record. It was a better night for the Thoroughbreds youth league men’s division 2 side, which had a 92-70 win against the Wallan Panthers. Centre Max Beaumont and Jake Cameron top scored for the Thoroughbreds with 18 points apiece. Tara Murray Diggers Rest’s Stuart Clarke takes a strong mark in game 200. (Shawn Smits)

MX-5 rediscovers excitement By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Almost a year ago, I accused the MX-5 of “going soft” when I wrote: “The latest (iteration) to appear is the MX-5 RF, a sleek fastback with a smooth line joining the roof to the rear of the car – a far cry from the pared-back proportions of the original MX-5.” Maybe someone back at Mazda HQ was listening, because the latest version of the best-selling roadster has been given a makeover to hark back to those early days of new-found driving excitement – without reproducing its privations. The latest Mazda MX-5 has been imbued with more power, torque and technology in all its three variants, from the entry-level Roadster through the mid-range RF to the top-dog RF GT. The 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder units have boosts, to 97 kW and 152 Nm and 135 kW and 205 Nm respectively. The 2.0 has its redline lifted to 7500rpm. The driver is pampered with telescopic steering wheel movement to find the most suitable driving position; safety is boosted with a rear camera and new standard safety technologies across all models. Prices have taken a nudge north, with the RF GT 2.0 manual (the test vehicle) putting on $1070 to get to $45,960, plus on road costs.

Styling

With the metal roof up or down, the Mazda MX-5 RF (for retractable fastback) GT is true to the tradition of the Triumph, Austin-Healey, MG and Lotus of old. With the roof up, the appealing fastback styling comes into its own with a beautiful smooth line joining the roof to the rear end. The RF GT has its own 17-inch bright finish wheels.

It was clear that to match the extra engine power, the manual transmission had been revised, delivering a sharper response and more direct driving feel than in the previous model. Fuel economy was sparing, with use kept under eight litres per 100 kilometres around town and a miserly 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres on motorways and easy paced country roads.

The MX-5 RF GT is for those who want the joys of small sports car motoring with the comfort and convenience of modern living. A gem.
