Courts hit and miss By Ewen McRae Basketball facilities across the region are being stretched to breaking point. While a new six-court stadium at Cobblebank is slated to be built shortly, registrations across Melton are growing at such a rate the local association says it will soon outgrow the new stadium. Melton Basketball Association president Daniel Brady said the new stadium would be welcome, but an upgrade could be needed soon after it is finished. “We desperately need these six courts, but basically by the time you build six we’ll need eight, by the time you build eight we’ll need 10,” Mr Brady said. “We’re very thankful to the council for getting us this stadium, but we’ve got a new club coming in with more teams so the need is always growing. “Quality courts are what we need. When we use the rec centre and there’s a downpour the roof leaks, so that’s a bit of a drama, and we’re renting at a couple of schools, so we go

Thousands of people are expected to flock to Lake Caroline this weekend for an egg-cellent day of family fun. The annual Caroline Springs Easter Family Fun Day on Saturday will offer an afternoon of fun for everyone. Organised by INChurch Melbourne, the event is in its fifth year. INChurch Melbourne pastor Craig Maher said he and wife Melissa started the event after moving to Caroline Springs. “One of the things we noticed straight away was there weren’t any community events offering low-cost, family-friendly entertainment,” he said. About 5000 people attended last year’s event. Saturday’s fun will feature inflatable games for the kids, a petting zoo, face-painting and live music. There will also be a free show bag with an Easter egg for each child. Entry is free. Wrist bands for unlimited inflatable games can be purchased for children aged three to 15. The event will run at the Lake Caroline Foreshore Park from 11am-3pm. Details: bit.ly/2GepCFB Joshua, 6

wherever we can to get kids on courts. “This new stadium will help bring us into the 21st century, but we will still have to use the rec centre and other courts in order to meet demand.” The next stage of the Cobblebank stadium has been funded in the recent draft council budget. Councillor Sophie Ramsey raised the courts issue at the recent council meeting and was told by council officers the Cobblebank site could not accommodate more than six courts. The Melton Basketball Association currently has 1500 registrations, with most of those from junior players. Mr Brady said they have had to restrict certain programs due to a facility strain. “We’re already capped at what we can do growth-wise,” he said. “Our Aussie Hoops program, which is the same as Auskick, is booked through the roof, we’ve already added an extra night for that. There’s exponential growth in basketball across Melton. “If this is a two-year build for a new facility, we could be petitioning governments straight away to get more upgrades to help us out.”

Market fall bigger than expected By Ewen McRae House prices across the west could be set to plummet according to new predictions from national ratings agency Moody’s. Revising downwards its predictions for the nation’s property market, the agency on Tuesday last week said it believed house prices would drop 7.7 per cent through 2019. In January, when it released its first forecasts for the year, it predicted a three per cent fall. Melbourne’s drop-off is tipped to be even more acute, with the agency now predicting an
11.4 per cent fall in the city’s house prices. In January, it was tipping a six per cent decline. The west of Melbourne is not expected to drop as sharply, but Moody’s is still predicting an 8.5 per cent fall. Moody’s said house prices were being driven down in part by soft household consumption, which was being compounded by low wages growth. “The underlying trend in consumption has been weak, as consumers have dipped into savings absent decent wage growth over the past few years,” it said.

Melton went up $150,000 in 12 months

- Shane Spiteri
“The downside risk is that the housing market declines sharply, more than expected, and the negative wealth effect becomes concerning across households, causing consumption to drop and the overall unemployment rate to rise.” Moody’s said there was a risk of further falls,
partly due to tightening credit conditions. But YPA Melton sales director Shane Spiteri said it was simply a matter of the market correcting and some perspective was needed. “What it has done is made it more affordable for first-home buyers and those downsizing to buy back into the market, because 12 months ago it was impossible,” Mr Spiteri said. “Melton went up $150,000 in 12 months, so while the market might be down eight per cent, it did go up 15 per cent before that.” – with The Age

Police are hoping dashcam footage or CCTV cameras can help with their investigation into the death of a Sydenham woman earlier this month. Vicki Ramadan, 77, was found dead in her Sydenham home on April 6. Police believe she had not been seen since some time in March. Homicide Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper urged anyone with information to come forward. “There’s still a lot of unanswered questions,” Detective Inspector Stamper said. “It was a brutal attack. There’s no other way to put it. A vulnerable, 77-year-old woman living by herself. It really was a horrific attack. “What we are also interested in, is if anyone can provide details of any suspicious activity in and or around Vicki’s Marlborough Way home.” Police reiterated Ms Ramadan was often seen walking near her home and was known to use public transport, in particular buses and taxis. It was also not uncommon for her to frequent the Watergardens shopping centre and it is believed she was well known by local traders. Police are also investigating if her house was broken into or if she let someone she knew into her home. Detective Inspector Stamper said though Ms Ramadan was distant from her family, they were “very co-operative” with the investigation. “Obviously, they’re devastated and want some answers,” he said. Anyone with information can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.

Simon Lush in the new garden. (Dennis Manktelow)
Garden’s health focus A new garden at Western Psychological Services in Melton South is having huge benefits for staff and clients alike. The garden was designed by staff clinical psychologist Simon Lush, who has also studied horticulture at university. It was designed as a ‘therapeutic landscape’ to create an environment that was healing, and also provide a sense of refuge and protection. “The basic idea was to create a welcoming and homely place for our clients and therapists,” Mr Lush said. “A lot of the people coming into the clinic are pretty highly stressed and often suffering pretty severe anxiety and depression, so giving them a space to soothe the senses is very important.
“There’s a lot of research about green spaces and how that can aid physical and mental recovery, so we’ve tried to apply that here.” As well as providing a soothing space for clients, the centre will also be starting a number of workshops in the garden to focus on mindfulness. “There’s a lot of things in mindfulness that deal with management of stress, so it’s quite a good fit for the garden,” Mr Lush said. “The feedback to the garden has been overwhelmingly positive, and as more things have started to grow it’s facilitated a lot of conversations around the practice and the nearby community, which has been great.” Ewen McRae

Lions in record appeal
Teen charged in Rebels raids
By Ewen McRae Fundraising for the annual Good Friday Appeal is in full swing, and the Bacchus Marsh Lions Club is hoping for another record-breaking year. While the club raises money year-round, the biggest influx of donations is expected this Friday as locals dig deep to contribute to the work of the Royal Children’s Hospital. Bacchus Marsh Lions Club appeal area manager David Atterbury said the club has high hopes for this year’s efforts.

A Kurunjang teenager and an Aintree man were among seven people arrested across Melbourne’s north-west last week in connection with an ongoing investigation involving the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang. Taskforce Echo police, along with the National Anti-Gangs squad, executed eight warrants at residential properties in Brookfield, Kurunjang, Aintree, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Essendon and Sunshine on April 9. A 28-year-old Aintree man was one of six men arrested and charged with a range of offences, including blackmail, extortion, aggravated carjacking (firearm used), theft of a motor vehicle, false imprisonment, making threats to kill, obtaining property by deception, committing an indictable offence on bail, prohibited person in possession of a firearm and possessing prohibited weapons. A 15-year-old Kurunjang boy was arrested and charged with offences including extortion, making threats to kill, aggravated carjacking and blackmail. A number of items were seized during the raids including a shotgun, ammunition, three motorcycles believed to be stolen, prohibited weapons and cannabis. Detective Superintendent Peter Brigham said the activities of Rebels and other gang members remain an ongoing focus of Victoria Police.
We’re probably a bit low for can shakers at the moment - David Atterbury

“Last year was a record for us, and we’re probably just ahead of where we were at this time last year,” Mr Atterbury said. “I think last year we raised $30,740, so we’re aiming for above $31,000 for this year, which would be terrific. “The day itself obviously has our biggest donations, and the community has always been terrific. You wouldn’t have many people who walk or drive past without throwing some coins in the can.” The Good Friday Appeal raised more than $18 million nationally in 2018, a new record. Mr Atterbury said the only issue this year was finding more people to help collect donations on Friday. He put a call out for more volunteers to get involved. “We’re probably a bit low for can shakers at the moment, so we’d love to have some more get in touch,” he said. “We get some from the CFA, local

Sebastien Wattelet has raised $10,276 after taking part in the MS Melbourne half marathon. Mr Wattelet, who grew up in Hoppers Crossing and now lives in the Melton municipality, ran the half-marathon last month. He ran in drag for the event, and was accompanied by a group of friends, under the team name of Not MSing Around. Members of the Royale Fitness gym in Bacchus Marsh also accompanied him during the event. Mr Wattelet said he wore a dress and blonde wig while running after a friend dared him to do so if he managed to raise $3000 or more.. “A lot of friends and family thought it was a great idea, obviously a little embarrassing but everyone sees the fun side of it,” Mr Wattelet said. In an unexpected bonus, Mr Wattelet said the half-marathon’s organiser’s also awarded him “best dressed” on the day. Mr Wattelet’s wife Audrey was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2014. He said that the MS Foundation “have been great with support” ever since. “We have also had a huge amount of help from friends and family from Wyndham and Bacchus Marsh,” he said. “Friends have helped with cooking meals, cleaning our house and picking up and dropping off our kids occasionally, it’s been overwhelming.” Mr Wattelet said that his children, a teenage daughter and two young boys, were also very supportive of their mother. Between July, 2017, and June last year, Casey recorded the highest number of family violence incidents in the state with 4733
offences, followed by Greater Geelong with 3319, Whittlesea with 3057, Hume with 3040 and Frankston with 2718. Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Lawrence, from the Westgate Family Violence Investigation Unit, said: “The rapidly growing population in the area of Wyndham certainly contributes significantly to the high recording of family violence incidents in the area. “Local police have progressively specialised our response to family violence in recognition of the risk and complexity that these incidents pose.”
He said that across the state, reports of family violence had gradually increased over time. “Sadly, though, we continue to see unacceptable numbers of women and children who are not safe in their own homes,” he said. “We know that family violence takes many forms – it’s not just about physical violence. If you feel at risk of family violence or believe that someone you know is, seek help from police or a support service such as Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre (1800 015 188).
In the market for local A new market starring the best local makers and growers is coming to the Melton area. Kicking off on Easter Monday, the Cornwall Park Makers & Growers Market will feature more than 30 stalls showcasing the best of the local region, from crafts and clothes to food and drink. Organiser Dotty Hazel said the location was a perfect fit for the area. “All the Melton markets are either central or south, there’s nothing really up that end of town – so it’s the perfect location,” Ms Hazel said. “The idea is to feature the makers and growers of all the regions around us, so generally speaking it will all be handmade or homegrown stuff there, which is fantastic. “The aim is to not flood it with lots of the same stall, or have 150 stalls, but to have one or at most two stalls for each product and give them the opportunity to grow with us.”
As well as the stalls, the market hopes to feature different workshops each month, starting with kids pasta making from the Knife N Fork cooking school. “I’m not sure there’s any other markets that do things like that – I haven’t heard of that,” Ms Hazel said. “They will be paid workshops that people will have to book into, but they’ll get to take something home, so that’s something a bit different for us.” Following Easter, the market will run on the third Sunday of each month from 11am-4pm at 2389-2485 Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, Toolern Vale. Ewen McRae Dotty Hazel is excited about the potential of the new market. (Shawn Smits)

Keith Harrison, of Harrison Toyota, has taken out a Supreme Court writ against Melton Council and Shire Secretary, Mr Max Watson, over the council’s failure to buy his land on the corner of High and Smith Streets. The writ claims that the council was “inaccurate and/or misleading” in saying that it would buy the land.
One of the largest developers of broadacre land in Melton, Westmelton Vic Pty Ltd, might have its local interests taken over by a Sydney-based company which is financed by a Japanese business group.
Melton council is seeking to reduce the speed limit along the unsealed section of Taylors Road, Rockbank, following recommendations from a coroners inquest into a fatal accident on the road last year.
The stoush over Melton’s first strip club is far from over after it was revealed the applicant has lodged an appeal with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Melton Council unanimously rejected the application for “Stiletto Heaven” at its March 2 meeting.

Book in some fun Melton libraries are being celebrated. The statewide Libraries Change Lives campaign is aimed at raising awareness of events, collections and programs at Victorian libraries, and Melton council is joining in. Melton mayor Bob Turner said more people than ever were making use of libraries. “Here in the City of Melton, the number of library visits hit an all-time high of over 668,000 people in the last financial year,” Cr Turner said. “More than 22,000 free wi-fi sessions were accessed and over 580,000 items from physical collections and 21,000 digital resources, such as e-books, were borrowed.” He said the council would promote library programs as part of the campaign.
“Local residents have used our public libraries to learn how to code, to improve their English or even start up a small business,” Cr Turner said. “They support early childhood learning, culture and creativity, and provide inclusive public spaces for everyone in our city. “Our public libraries at Melton and Caroline Springs help build a literate, productive and engaged community and I encourage everyone to visit the one nearest them to learn more about how they can help you.” The campaign is being led by Public Libraries Victoria and the State Library of Victoria. Police plan major road blitz during Easter Operation Nexus is a statewide police road operation during Easter. It aims to increase driver awareness and journey planning, while reducing road trauma during this high-risk time. This five-day campaign will run from Thursday, April 18 to Monday, April 22. Road Policing Advisor Sergeant Marty Wallace says this operation will be conducted throughout all operational police regions and police service areas during the five days, using all available personnel from local road policing units, general duties and other regional resources. Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to road policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma: speed, alcohol and drug impairment, driver distraction, fatigue and seatbelts. “Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they take at least a 15-minute break every two hours and not to drive if tired,” says Sergeant Wallace. “Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles on our major freeways and highways throughout the state. “Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, and the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. “All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.” RoadSafe Westgate community road safety council chair Jim Giddings says it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen,” Mr Giddings states.
Sergeant Marty Wallace is ready for the statewide Easter operation.

“If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive. Taking a big risk like drinking and driving is just not worth endangering your life or the lives of other road users.
should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road.
“Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers
“The onus is always on the driver to suit the
conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road.” Mr Giddings asks the community to report speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

SPORT Centrals in huge win, but still in search of consistency Melton Centrals’ perfect start to the season continued with a big win against Lancefield in the Riddell District Football League. On paper, Centrals had the easiest fixture in the opening two rounds, and it has played out that way with the side sitting on top with a big percentage. On Saturday, they had a good first half against Lancefield, before getting a bit sloppy in the second. It didn’t matter, with Centrals winning 29.23 (197)-1.2 (8). Centrals’ coach Matt Sproule said despite the big win, it was a mixed performance. “In the first half we were really good,” he said. “In the second half, it was a bit average. We played like a team that knew they were playing a team that would struggle. “We naturally switched off in the third. We kicked eight points in a row. ” Dylan Weir continued his love affair of playing against Lancefield, kicking 12 goals.
He had 10 goals at half-time, before the Tigers double and triple-teamed him. He has 24 goals for the season. Sproule said it made them find other avenues to goal, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “Jimmy Aquilina kicked five goals and the midfielders were also kicking goals.” David and Mick Callus were among Centrals’ best, along with Daniel Foley. Having played Rockbank and the Tigers – two teams not expected to feature in the finals – in the opening two rounds, Sproule admits they’ve used the matches to try things ahead of a tougher period. Centrals have two weeks off, one for Easter and one for the bye, before they face Woodend-Hesket. It’s a game Sproule said they need to win if they are to challenge to play finals. “Last year it was 1-1 between the teams,” he said. “We’ve got a tough period in the middle of the year.”
Overall, Sproule said they were in a good place as a club, with plenty of numbers across the board. In other matches, Diggers Rest won the grand final rematch against Riddell. After an even first half, the Burras kicked away to win 15.9 (94)-7.9 (51). Matthew Krul was named the Burras’ best. It was another tough day for Rockbank, on the end of a 49.31 (325)-1.6 (12) loss to Wallan. Stephen Newton was the sole goalkicker for the Rams, with Mitchell Baumgartner named their best. Matthew Perri kicked 13 goals for the Magpies in the win. Rupertswood and Macedon were the other winners. Tara Murray

Panthers sneak home By Tara Murray Melton South came from behind at three-quarter time to take victory in the Melton derby in the opening round of the Ballarat Netball League. In a match which ebbed and flowed, it was the Panthers that came out on top against Melton, winning 40-37. Early on, the Panthers looked the better team before the Bloods settled in the middle two quarters. With a slightly more experienced side, the Bloods looked set to go on with it. The Panthers, though, had other ideas, dominating the last quarter to create a seven-goal turnaround to take the win. Panthers’ coach Anna Edmonds said it was good to get the win to start the season. “It’s interesting to see what we are going to look forward to for the season,” she said. “It was a tough game out there today, we had lots of different combinations we had to throw out there. “We had to do something different and put it together and get the ‘w’.” Despite being the younger side, the Panthers were able to hold their composure late in the game. The defence led the way, with a number of key turnovers. Grace Valele created a large number of those turnovers. Edmonds said the key was making sure they all backed each other up. “It’s knowing that you always have each other there and there’s options for you to look for. “It was not only the defence to get the turnovers, but keeping the ball and keeping position and turning it into goals.” Savannah Forbes shot 18 goals for the Panthers, with Bonnie Cottam and Valele named the best. For the Bloods, Keely Boudrie shot 29 goals. Jess Bartlett was awarded the overall best on court award. Edmonds knows despite getting a first-up win, they still have a lot to work on. They wasted a lot of opportunities with plenty of turnovers. “That’s what we spoke about. A lot of it was our undoing,” Edmonds said. “We’ll have a lot to do in practice.” It doesn’t get easier for the Panthers, who face the Sunbury Lions in their next match. Edmonds said it would be good to test themselves against one of the top sides. “I guess the Melton South and Melton

match there is a rivalry that comes with added pressure.” In other results, Darley lost to the Sunbury Lions. A 20-6 first quarter set up the win for the Lions.
Melanie Freeman scored 28 goals for the Devils. It was a tough start for a new look Bacchus Marsh side, which was convincingly beaten by North Ballarat City, 63-38. Marie Bolitho was named the Cobras’ best.
Young Mustangs learn the ropes Melton is banking on youth this season in the Hockey Victoria Vic League competition. The Mustangs, who have a Vic League 2 women’s side and a Vic League 3 men’s side, will field some young teams this year. Mustangs’ Tom McMurrie said the women’s program had a lot of new and young players. “We have a really young first side with a couple of older girls down back,” he said. “There’s a lot of 15-16 year-olds who are really good players. “Our women’s side has a lot of new players, who have improved a lot and have gone quite well. “Hopefully they’ll start to get some wins together.” He highlighted the likes of Chloe Schwarze, Jemma Rigby, Kayla and Kiara Ive as four of the young players to watch. The Vic League 2 side had a tough challenge on Saturday against Casey, which dropped down from Vic League 1 in the off season. Casey won 6-0. Lisa Williams was the best for the Mustangs, who were missing a couple of players. The Mustangs’ second women’s side lost 5-0 to Sunshine. The men’s Vic League 3 side faced a team which dropped down from a higher grade. The Mustangs lost to ECHO, 3-0. McMurrie said while the side is a young one, they were hopeful they could build on last season. “They’re a very young side coming through with a few older guys. “They played a really good side and showed glimpses, we were on top for parts of the match. “Development is important for that side, I would like to see the side play finals. We weren’t far off last season and if you turn a couple of those losses into wins, we can definitely play finals.” The men’s Pennant G side lost to ECHO, 3-1, while the Masters side had a first-up 7-0 win against Yarra Valley. Meanwhile, Caroline Springs men’s and women’s Vic League sides both had byes this week. Tara Murray 21 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 16, 2019

Young Georgies begin to mature with solid win
Nelson Salvatore was both a Caroline Springs George Cross goalscorer and a step ladder for Yarraville Glory high-flyer Louis Paraskevas. (Mark Wilson)
What a stark difference a week made for Caroline Springs George Cross in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 soccer. The Georgies began the round in last place on the ladder after a draw and two losses in the first three rounds, but a breakthrough 3-1 win over Yarraville Glory at McIvor Reserve on Saturday has catapulted them up five places into seventh. This is a young and developing Georgies team, so its performances have been predictably inconsistent. But coach Corey Smith was encouraged enough by the first 270 minutes of the season to go into the Glory game with confidence. “Obviously, we haven’t had a great start results-wise and it was good to get the first win out of the way,” Smith said. “I honestly believe that win has been coming. Our performances have been deserving of more points, but today was a performance for 90 minutes.”
The Georgies have a lot of talent, but the squad’s average age is 22. “Slowly each week we’re working on something different and things that may have come up,” Smith said. “Really, it’s about giving the players confidence in what we’re trying to do. “When they’re challenged, can they make decisions on the pitch to overcome those challenges?” The most pleasing aspect of the win was that the Georgies were challenged by Yarraville in the second half and had all the answers. After Caroline Springs went 2-0 up and was seemingly in control, the Glory scored after half-time and had all the momentum for about 15 minutes. “That goal gave them a bit of a boost and for a period there they had the ascendancy,” Smith said. “What we were able to do today is kill off their momentum and go back at them.
Bloods get the points By Tara Murray Melton came away with the win against arch-rival Melton South, but had to work a lot harder for the four points than they would have liked in the opening round of the Ballarat Football League. The Bloods dominated the game for the most part, but the scoreboard didn’t reflect that. The game could have been over at half-time, if not for the Bloods wasteful kicking at goal. While the Panthers continued to push hard, eventually weight of numbers saw the Bloods kick away in the last quarter. The Bloods winning, 12.27 (99)-6.11 (47). While Bloods’ coach Aaron Tymms was happy to get the win, he was frustrated with the poor goalkicking, having had 22 more shots on goal. “We were happy to get the win, but a little bit disappointed how we went about it,” he said. “One of our key focuses at the start of the year was to get better with goalkicking as we were pretty horrible with it last year, that sort of continued today. “It’s something we have to continue to work on.” Tymms said while they could have put the game away earlier, he paid tribute to the pressure that the Panthers were able to put on them early in the game. The Bloods saved their best quarter for the end to seal the game, kicking 5.8 in that term. “To our boys’ credit, after half-time they picked up the pace, got the choccies in the end,” Tymms said. “While 5.8 is still not great, at least we kicked a couple of snags. “To get a win in round one shows the boys have a bit of resilience from what happened in the last game [grand final] last year.” Tymms said a lot of their midfielders were the standouts across the whole day. Connor Griffiths and Jaycob Hickey, along with recruits Dyson Stevens, Shaun Campbell and Anthony Hibbert, were all named in the best. Tymms had special praise for the role Mitch Brockwell played on Dylan Conway, keeping him goalless. Daniel Leggett was named the Panthers’ best, with Will Thornton-Gielen kicking four goals. The win had one downside for the Bloods with Matt Denham hurting his hamstring. Tymms said they were unsure how bad it was. On the plus side for the Bloods, they have a number of players in the reserves that can step up into the senior side. “We retained everyone and added a bit of depth, hopefully we are a little stronger this 22 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 16, 2019
“That’s probably the area we’ve been lacking the last couple of weeks … an ability to believe in what you’re doing at any stage of the game.” The calming effect that midfielders Kobe Kemp, Liam Harding and Daniel Slovacek had on Caroline Springs was profound. Slovacek found the back of the net for the Georgies, along with the other goalscorers, Nelson Salvatore and Yuji Kin. A highlight for Smith was the debut of Alex Dimond. Having turned 17 four days earlier, Dimond got the perfect birthday present from Smith when he was called into the starting line-up. The right back impressed in his first outing. “He started the game a little bit shaky like any kid that age would, but then he grew into the game,” Smith said. Caroline Springs will play NPL 2 side Eastern Lions at Knox on Wednesday night in FFA Cup action. Lance Jenkinson

Riddell and Diggers Rest played the match of the round in Riddell District Netball League, playing a 38-all draw. Both teams were looking for their first win of the season, with the Burras coming from four goals down at the last break. In other games, Melton Centrals got its first win of the season, beating Lancefield 62-34. Rebecca Morabito was the pick of the shooters, with 35 goals for Centrals. Rockbank lost to Wallan, 36-28.
Big V
It was a tough weekend for Melton Thoroughbreds in the Big V division 2 competition. The men’s side lost to the Southern Peninsula Sharks on Saturday night, 94-73. The Thoroughbreds were in the game at half-time, before the Sharks went on a 32-11 run in the third quarter. On Sunday, they backed it up against the Mildura Heat, but fell to a 75-65 loss. The Thoroughbreds women lost to Blackburn Vikings 73-60. Allanna Procak top scored with 21.
FFV
Westside Strikers got their first win of the FFV state league 4 west season, beating Gisborne. The Strikers scored twice in the first half to set up the win, before Gisborne got one back in the second half. The Strikers winning 2-1. In other matches, Spring Hills had a 1-1 draw with North Melbourne Athletic. In state league 5 west, Melton Phoenix lost to Barwon 4-2, after being 2-0 down at half-time.

Caroline Springs opened its account in the Western Region Football League division 1 season. After an even first quarter against Point Cook, the Lakers opened up the game in the second quarter and led by 41 points at half-time. The margin increased to 64 at the last break, before the Bulldogs showed some fight in the final quarter. The Lakers won 15.15 (105)-8.7 (55). Keenan O’Shea was named best on ground. year.” The Bloods have this weekend off due to Easter, before a grand final rematch against East Point the following week. Tymms said it was one match they were looking forward to.

“The well-awaited one, the big one.” In other results, Darley beat the Sunbury Lions, 13.13 (91)-7.13 (55). Darren Leonard was named the Devils’ best. Bacchus Marsh lost to North Ballarat City, 9.23 (77)-9.9 (63).

MOTOR
Kudos for Renault’s Koleos By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring
AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE
Renault Koleos is a product of the alliance between the French automotive giant and its Japanese partner Nissan. A mid-sized SUV, it sits on the same platform and shares its engine and transmission with the popular Nissan X-Trail. Adding to its multinational identity Koleos is built at Renault’s Samsung factory in South Korea. Despite pricing of the two models being in the same ball park, X-Trail outsells Koleos by a ratio of around seven to one. Koleos comes in three specification levels: Life, Zen and Intens ranging in price from $30,990 for the FWD 2.5-litre petrol Life through to $47,490 for the AWD 2.0-litre diesel Intens.
Life 2.5-litre petrol 2WD: $30,990 (CVT automatic) Zen 2.5-litre petrol 2WD: $35,490 (CVT automatic) Zen 2.5-litre petrol AWD:| $37,990 (CVT automatic) Intens 2.5-litre petrol AWD: $45,990 (CVT automatic) Intens 2.0-litre diesel AWD: $47,490 (CVT automatic) Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Renault dealer for drive-away prices.
Driving
Styling
While the overall shape of the Koleos aligns with that of the X-Trail – and with many others in their bulging market segment – they are easily distinguished elsewhere. Koleos has a much bolder grille highlighted by a large version of the distinctive Renault badge in the centre.
Safety
There’s an excellent list of safety features across the range including Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) and Lane Departure Warning. There’s some cost-saving in the entry-level Life with an old-style ignition key and a foot operated parking brake. All higher spec variants have push button start/stop and an electronic parking brake.

naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol and a 2.0-litre turbo diesel. Koleos also comes with the choice of front or all-wheel drive. The latter gives three options: 2WD, Auto and Lock controlled by a switch on the centre console.
Interior
Unlike X-Trail which offers optional third-row seats, Koleos is only available as a five-seater. There’s plenty of space in all directions. The

rear seats can handle three adults with more than enough head and legroom. There are twin air vents in the rear. Boot space ranges from 458 litres to 1690 litres. There’s a full-size spare below the boot floor.
Infotainment
All models get Renault’s R-LINK 2 Multimedia system with voice control through Siri capable smartphones and customisable home screens as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Summing up
Koleos is an attractive, capable family-sized SUV with excellent interior space and a high level of safety equipment. It certainly doesn’t deserve to trail its market-leading competitors to the extent that it does and so is well worth a comparison test drive.

Entry and exit is easy and the driver’s seat is wide, supportive and comfortable. The steering wheel is both tilt and reach adjustable. Our test car was the relatively Spartan 2.5-litre petrol entry-level Life. Fuel consumption is listed at 8.1 litres per 100 km. We averaged 9.6 L/100 km during our usual blend of urban, motorway and rural conditions. Expect double figures in exclusively city driving. Suspension is a little harsh and relatively firm without making the ride uncomfortable. Steering is light and direct.
