Special day for a mum

(Damjan Janevski)

Sarah Scorrar is looking forward to celebrating her first Mother’s Day with husband Paul and four-month-old son Finn. To celebrate the special day, Ms Scorrar and her family will be walking to support breast cancer research. “Paul and I are doing the Mother’s Day Classic in Eynesbury and then we might go out for lunch,” she said. “I did it [the classic] last year when I was pregnant with Finn – and now he’ll be on the outside.” The new mum said motherhood presented many challenges, but she wouldn’t change any of it for the world. “Everything is really new,” she said. “We’ve learnt a lot, but it’s super rewarding watching him smiling and change all the time. “It’s been very challenging and rewarding at the same time.” The couple happily welcomed baby Finn into the world on New Year’s Day this year. West has growing appeal By Ewen McRae The Rockbank-Mt Cottrell area is the fastest growing region in Australia, according to new figures. Rockbank-Mt Cottrell topped the Housing Industry Association’s national growth list with a growth rate of 59.4 per cent in the 2017-18 financial year. That growth came on the back of more than 8000 homes being added to the area in that time. Rockbank-Mt Cottrell took the top spot from the Mickleham region, which slipped to second

place. Victoria claimed 12 of the top 20 housing growth hot spots in Australia. Other western suburbs areas to make the top 20 were Point Cook (12), Truganina (15), Tarneit (17) and Werribee West (20). HIA chief economist Tim Reardon said growth pockets on the fringes of capital cities continued to perform strongly and predicted Rockbank could be on top for a while. “The majority of the growth is in the fringe of Melbourne as the city expands,” Mr Reardon said. “This is not surprising, given the significant investment in infrastructure

and the region’s growing professional services sector. Major infrastructure projects, including upgrades to the train station and train lines as well as a new six-lane arterial road … are expected to maintain the momentum.” Melton council chief executive Kelvin Tori said the growth of Rockbank re-enforced the need for more investment from state and federal governments. “This report clearly highlights the need we have been advocating for on behalf of our growing communities,” Mr Tori said. “Rockbank residents need safe, efficient

commutes, education choices and healthcare access – and this need is felt across the City of Melton. “Our growing communities, like those in Rockbank and Mt Cottrell, are the reason we have been advocating the state and federal governments to fund vital infrastructure like the Western Highway upgrade, additional schools, a new hospital. “We are calling on the state government to maintain its Growing Suburbs Fund so we can continue to provide parks, leisure centres and more in a timely manner.”

Land secured for new school By Ewen McRae A new primary school in Melton South is a step closer to reality after the state government finalised a land acquisition on Bridge Road last week. The new school, which was part of an election commitment at last year’s election, was one of four schools promised for the Melton area. Melton MP Steve McGhie said the school will provide a boost for the growing region. “It’s fantastic news for the community,” Mr McGhie said.

“Having the land ticked off means that the progress can be made on getting the school started in the near future, and delivering a new school for that community. “There is massive growth within the Melton electorate, and we know that more schools need to be built. This is the second location confirmed after the Eynesbury school, which will be built as I understand it by 2021, and this one not long after in hopefully 2022. “It is absolutely essential that schools are being built in this electorate just to keep up with the pace of growth.”

New schools at Rockbank North and Grasslands were also part of the election pledge. Education Minister James Merlino said these schools were the start of an eight-year plan for new schools across the state. “We’ll open 100 new schools over the next eight years – creating thousands of jobs and ensuring every child has a great education at their local public school,” Mr Merlino said. While the exact components of the new Melton South school are not yet known, Mr McGhie said students can look forward to top-notch facilities.

“The designs of the new schools these days are really modern and open planned,” he said. “The facilities will be state-of-the-art, and the consultation with the teachers, principals, parents and kids will be thorough, so students can look forward to that. “I would think the school will initially cater for several hundred students, with obviously the potential for future growth. “There’s no question we will need more schools in this electorate in the future, and that is something I’ll be continuing to take up with the government and the minister directly.”

Athletes test their limits than Mt Everest, so it’s a big sense of adventure. It’s not like running on roads or groomed trails – you do a lot of off-trail stuff, and it does push people to their limits. “Sometimes it does break them, but most do want to come back.” Event entries have almost doubled in its short history, with 17 competitors (five finishers) in the first year and the cap of 40 expected to be reached in the coming years. “It has been touted as one of the toughest ultra-running races on the planet,” Mr Chircop said. “Some guys don’t sleep, some guys have a crew and others go solo … it’s about how much you want to push yourself to complete it in the time allowed.” Details: downunder135.com Ewen McRae

Described as one of the “gnarliest” foot races in the southern hemisphere, the Down Under 135 bared its teeth at the weekend to athletes brave enough to have a crack. The ultra running event was held along the Lerderderg and Wombat tracks near Bacchus Marsh from May 3 to 5, and comprised of a single stage 217-kilometre race along uneven and treacherous terrain. Entrants were required to complete the course inside 54 hours to officially finish. Of the 32 competitors who took to the course on Friday morning, nine completed the challenge in time. The event was started in 2017 by four local friends who wanted to create a physical test in their own backyard. One of the organisers, Dale Chircop, said such events were about testing your limits. “It’s about the challenge,” he said. “The race itself is over 9500 metres gained, which is more

A new childcare centre in Rockbank is proving popular with locals. Woodlea Early Education opened in the Woodlea estate recently, offering 104 childcare places for children age from six weeks to five years. Woodlea Early Education spokesperson Maddison Elis said creating a welcoming community in the centre was a major goal. “Woodlea is such a close-knit community who respect and care for each other and we wanted to become part of such a positive community who shares our values of compassion and respect,” she said. “We want to allow all of the different age groups to come together, allowing siblings, cousins, neighbours

Lakeview leads the way

Melton plots soccer tactics

By Ewen McRae Lakeview Senior College has known for some time it had a special teacher in Melanie Brooks, and now the whole state knows. Ms Brooks was last week named the Teacher of the Year at the VCAL Teacher Achievement Awards, while the VCAL program that she runs at the Caroline Springs school was also named as the best in the state. The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a ‘hands-on’ option for students in Years 11 and 12. Ms Brooks said it was a shock to win, but nice to get the recognition from her peers. “It was very exciting, and nice to be recognised for all the hard work that goes on here,” Ms Brooks said. “I’ve been involved with VCAL for 16 years, so it’s probably recognition for the work over a long period and lovely to get that and share it with my friends and family. “It’s also great for the kids to know that our program is state level kind of stuff, and that what we’re doing here at the college is seen to be worthy and a best practice model.” For Ms Brooks, her work prior to arriving at Lakeview is what gave her the passion to create such a well respected VCAL program. “Before I worked in teaching I worked a lot in student wellbeing, and some drug and alcohol work, and I felt like I was working with young people after the fact,” she said. “A lot of them had disengaged with education because there wasn’t an alternative for them. And VCAL is such a great option for kids who don’t see themselves as university candidates. “It’s such a great way to stay involved with education for kids, because they build networks, get hands-on working experience, but also get a qualification they can use once

they finish school.” The VCAL program at Lakeview has undergone a number of changes since Ms Brooks arrived in 2017 and immediately saw some opportunities to revamp the way things were done. Last year saw students build and

operate a coffee cart at the school, which they still run, giving students first-hand experience with running a business. “When I got here we shook everything out of the box and made some improvements which have really helped liven up the program,” Ms Brooks said.

Melton council will develop a draft strategy to guide the future of soccer in the municipality. The proposed strategy, introduced as a notice of motion by Cr Steve Abboushi at last week’s meeting, will seek to engage clubs across the region to help discover what is needed to ensure the future success of the sport. “It’s about properly, and in a strategic way, planning for the future of the world game in a fast growing municipality,” Cr Abboushi said. “The demands for football or soccer are growing at such a fast rate, that in order to respond to that we need to have a strategic plan about what that means for our community. “Clubs want to see council being pro-active in planning for the future of the game. “We want to make sure we’re providing the relevant infrastructure to meet the demand, otherwise it makes it difficult for grass-roots clubs to form and to thrive.” Among the proposed scope for the strategy will be opportunities for facility development and upgrades, participation and membership trends, access to programs (particularly female access) and identifying the opportunity to develop a multi-pitch regional facility. It is hoped the strategy will guide decisions about the sport for the next 10 years. Ewen McRae

Labor promises jobs for Gorton By Ewen McRae There will be post-election boost of health and human services in the Gorton electorate if the Labor party is successful in this month’s poll. Local MP Brendan O’Connor was in Melton last week to announce that 40 new full-time Department of Human Services jobs would be created in Gorton if Bill Shorten’s team forms government. The jobs will include service delivery as well as call centre roles, and will reduce waiting and processing times for Medicare and Centrelink.

‘‘

This commitment of 40 new jobs is great for the economy - Brendan O’Connor

’’

Mr O’Connor said it was important the growing community in Melbourne’s west did not fall behind the rest of the city when it comes to services. “The local families, carers, students and pensioners of Gorton deserve better Medicare and Centrelink service delivery,” he said.

Artistic eye for the bush Swapping tradie tools for an artist’s paint brush may not be a conventional career path, but Adam Kirwin is making it work. The former landscaper has turned his attention to his lifelong passion for art, bringing to life the Australian bush and outback that he remembers from his childhood. Kirwin now calls Diggers Rest home, but he grew up in the New South Wales town of Yass and other rural parts of the state. “I think my upbringing has definitely given me the opportunity to see parts of this wonderful country that many do not get to see,” Kirwin said. “You get to see the rawest parts of Australia in regional areas. It’s not until you get older that you realise how different regional Australia is to city areas. “The land goes for miles and its rich colours and textures are mesmerising.” Making the switch from landscaping to painting has not been without its challenges,

6 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 7, 2019

but bringing his visions to life was a passion Kirwin said he could not ignore. “I’ve always been creative and loved designing things,” he said. “I love landscaping, drawing plans and researching horticultural solutions. “I created one of my first creative plans when I was eight years old, designing my grandparents’ garden … [I] enjoyed seeing the whole process of plans come to life. “I’m probably not your typical artist and my works are very different to anything else. “Whether deliberately or not, I’ve managed to capture the essence of Australia in quite an intriguing way.” Details: adamkirwanart.com Ewen McRae Former landscaper turned artist, Adam Kirwin. (Shawn Smits)

“This commitment of 40 new jobs for Gorton is great for the local economy. “If Labor is elected, it will inject around $3 million into our local community. “Centrelink provides essential services to the people of Melbourne’s west, and this commitment will significantly increase its capacity to help locals.” There are nearly 14,000 age pension recipients in the Gorton electorate, while there are nearly 6000 disability support pension recipients, 18,000 family tax benefit recipients and more than 7500 carer allowance

recipients who the new jobs should support. Opposition human services spokesman Ed Husic was also on hand for the announcement, which also included 40 jobs for the nearby Lalor electorate as part of 160 jobs statewide in the sector. “This is an investment by Labor in better jobs and better services for Victoria,” Mr Husic said. “Apart from the fact these 160 jobs will provide a welcome economic boost, these full-time, well-trained, permanent staff will be there to help Victorians when they need it most.”

Labor promises field upgrades By Ewen McRae Upgrades to the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Grounds are a step closer to reality, with a pledge of federal funds should the Labor Party win this month’s election. Ballarat MP Catherine King visited the site last week to announce a funding commitment of $1.4 million to go towards stage two of the re-development, which will include new soccer and cricket fields. A recent council application for federal funding on the project was knocked back, but

‘‘

Labor’s investment is about improving the region’s liveability - Catherine King

’’

Ms King said the upgrades were long overdue for the region. “There are no dedicated, purpose-built football pitches in Moorabool shire, despite rapid population growth in the area, so Labor’s investment is about improving the region’s liveability and opportunities” Ms King said.

“Our investment will deliver two football pitches and a cricket pitch with coaches boxes and the associated drainage, irrigation and fencing works. “About one in three of all sports participants in the shire are based in the Bacchus Marsh area but only about half of the sporting facilities, so these facilities are needed now but will also help build capacity in the community to cope with a population forecast to increase to 25,000 by 2021 and more than 35,000 by 2041.” Shadow minister for sport, Senator Don Farrell, was also on hand for the announcement,

and said it was about providing the best opportunities for local clubs to grow. “Whether they dream of playing for Australia, or just want to enjoy the health and social benefits that come with being part of a community sporting club, we want to give all Australians the chance to enjoy sport,” Senator Farrell said. “Our investments in local sporting facilities like these help clubs and communities build capacity to meet the welcome growth in female participation in club sport and support more Australians to live active, healthy lifestyles.”

A candid look at world Southern Cross Grammar students are preparing to taking audiences on a journey of side-splitting misadventures in their latest production, Candide. Twenty students from the Caroline Springs school have spent the past term rehearsing the show, which opens on May 10. The production will feature puppet-like clowns, a chorus of singing air hostess and musical kitsch, as the main character, Candide embarks on a journey to be reunited with his childhood love which causes him to question his optimistic outlook on life. Drama teacher and director Lincoln Busby said the adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide will feature an outlandish and satirical look at the world. “I would like the audience to see the show as a satire on our no-worries culture, as much as a piece of entertaining theatrical escapism,” he said.

“The cast and crew have tirelessly volunteered their time to bring this classic story to life.” Candide will be performed at the school on May 10, 17 and 18 at 7.30pm and May 11 at 2pm. All proceeds will go towards future performances. Details: bit.ly/2PD4LiF Laura Michell

Harvey Norman backs health and hockey Their sponsorship of PEGS Hockey Club is part of their commitment to the area and its people, says Watergardens Electrical manager Ben Wills. “Hockey’s a great way to stay fit and PEGS is a great, family-oriented club,” he says. “The majority of the kids and adults that play for them have a direct connection to the area that we service, all the way through to Sunbury. “They’ve got one of the biggest junior development programs in the state, ranging from six upwards. Stick 2 Hockey and Hook in 2 Hockey are a great way to get kids involved from the get-go as well. These teams are an opportunity for kids to meet life-long friends.” Ben says the team at Watergardens usually donate items to raffles and other fundraising events, but recently a different approach was taken.

“This time we’ve donated some money, which may be used to help fund the club and make it bigger and more successful,” he says. “This money could go towards a new hockey pitch or simple items like new hockey balls and new cones or goals. The bigger picture for them is that they want to get the women and men promoted to premier league, which is the top league in Victoria for hockey.” This initiative is the kind Ben sees as part of an ongoing Harvey Norman tradition. “We helped out the Royal Children’s Hospital appeal this year and recently donated some goods to the local fire brigade,” he says. “We tend to help wherever we can.”

Upgrade Western Highway

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner Residents will be aware that Council has embarked on an advocacy campaign to Upgrade Western Highway, in the lead up to the Federal election. While the campaign has garnered considerable community support, having already collected almost 4000 petition signatures, it would appear Melton is not on the radar of any major party, who have yet to commit to upgrading this critical piece of transport infrastructure. The Western Highway functions as an important economic driver at the national, state and metropolitan level, and is part of a national freight route, yet it is barely up to rural freeway standard in sections, let alone urban freeway standard. With our population set to grow to more than 400,000 over the next 20 years, traffic modelling indicates the

Sign the petition today! In the lead up to the Federal election, Council is encouraging members of the community to sign our petition calling on all political parties to commit to upgrading the Western Highway within the City of Melton. Around 60,000 vehicles use the highway every day, with this figure set to increase to 113,000 by 2031. In its current condition, the highway won’t cope with this increase, and needs urgent upgrades to meet the demands of this projected growth. Upgrades would include interchanges at Bulmans and Mount Cottrell Roads, and a pedestrian overpass at Arnolds Creek, along with road improvement works and the removal of at-grade infrastructure - like bus stops and driveways - between Deer Park and Melton West. Future planning will include additional lanes, an interchange at Harkness Road and an overpass at Paynes Road. These works will improve safety, reduce congestion, and prevent the highway becoming gridlocked; as well as positively impacting the lives of tens of thousands of residents who will spend less time stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and more quality time with their families and friends. So, if you haven’t already, sign the petition at catchup.org.au/melton and let our politicians know this is important to you.

Western Highway will be gridlocked as early as 2021. While we appreciate commitments made to local sporting organisations in Rockbank and Caroline Springs, we also need major commitments for critically-needed projects like upgrades to Western Highway, Calder Freeway and support for a new Melton Hospital. The major parties need to look beyond just winning the upcoming election and make commitments where the funding is desperately needed. Our City shouldn’t need to be a marginal seat to get the government to notice us. Help us tell the candidates this is important to you. If you haven’t already done so, sign the petition at catchup.org.au/melton To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au

Watts Ward

Cr Lara Carli It’s an exciting time for Watts ward residents, with a number of key infrastructure projects being delivered in the coming months. Works on the Hillside Pavilion extension in Royal Crescent, are just about finished, with improvements guaranteed to impress both residents and visitors alike. The new pavilion looks fantastic, and features unisex change rooms and bathrooms for both home and away teams. The $400,000 extension was funded entirely by Council, and will be completed by mid-June. I, for one, am very excited about this project and encourage Hillside residents to come along and check-out the new facility for themselves. Design work for the new Morton Playspace is well underway, with construction works scheduled to commence in September. This exciting project will see playground equipment,

outdoor exercise equipment, shelter and picnic seating, nature play areas, footpath connections and landscaping and tree planting installed on the reserve adjacent to Morton Homestead and the Taylors Hill Men’s Shed. This $530,000 project was made possible as the result of a partnership between Melton City Council and the State Government, who provided funding of $265,000 under their Growing Suburbs Fund program. The park is expected to be finished in March 2020. Finally, on Tuesday 28 May at 11am, I’ll be hosting a morning tea for residents of Watts ward interested in meeting to discuss local issues. Please call me on 0409 951 020 or email lara.carli@melton.vic.gov.au for further information. I also invite residents to follow my Facebook page at: facebook.com/Cr.LaraCarli

MY PLACE Xavier McGettigan and Jayson Fry are making waves on the dance scene. The Caroline Springs duo have choreographed, directed and managed a stage production which is set to tour three cities across Victoria. They spoke with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank? Xavier: I’m the director of the Geelong-based, independent dance theatre company Attitude Dance Company, but we’re both residents of Caroline Springs – we’ve lived here a while now. What do you make of the performing arts scene in Brimbank? Xavier: It’s certainly developing out here. I’m hoping to get my finger on the pulse a little more than I currently do, but there are lots of fantastic dance schools with wonderful teachers here. I really hope to work with them in the future. Tell us about your latest production. Jayson: The production is called Ours. It’s our second major work by our newly created Impact Ensemble. We really wanted to explore a new and more intimate way of presenting. Ours explores themes of ownership, belonging and community through eight original dance works. So each artist has had full ownership of their piece? Jayson: They have. This is an opportunity for them to tell their stories through dance. They own their stories and you really see it come through on the floor.

And where can people buy tickets? Jayson: www.attitudedancecompany.com.au/tickets

(Supplied)

What can audiences expect? Xavier: The structure and approach to this production is something I hope provides a new and intimate experience for audiences in addition to the high quality dance we have become known for. JAYSON FRY ANd XAviER McGETTiGAN

Open house celebration It has been 10 years since The House of Light spiritualist church opened its doors in Melton, and it celebrated the special milestone at the weekend. Ministers Gordon McKenzie and Jennifer Valls say the church’s longevity is testament to their welcoming and positive ways. “We are part of the One Light Federation, which means no boundaries, no walls, and we are open to everybody,” Mr McKenzie said. “Our belief is that is the way it should be, everybody welcome and then bringing forth the message and the inspiration to help people be better people. “It is essentially about encouraging people to shine their own light and be the best they can be.” Ms Valls said the church – which is run out

of The Bluestone in Palmerston Street, Melton – was meant to be. “I live in Eltham, but my spirit guides came to me and started drawing the picture of where the church will be,” she said. “I started drawing what I was shown, and Gordon said he had seen that in Melton, and I kept seeing bluestone and that’s what was here. “Our first service had 41 people, so it struck a cord straight away.” On top of the regular services, the church also runs meditation sessions, mediumship classes, and confidence circles. “Our motto has always been about igniting the light, and sharing that light with everybody else,” Ms Valls said. CAN’T MAKE IT ON ELECTION DAY? Josie Mifsud from Responsible Pet Ownership with Max and prep pupil Harper. (Joe Mastroianni)

Staying safe with pets Prep pupils at Melton South Primary School had a special treat last week when they had a visit from a number of furry friends. As part of the Responsible Pet Ownership program, pupils took part in a session on how to live safely with dogs and other animals, as well as some hands-on tips. The program – which visits more than 2000 kindergartens and 800 primary schools across Victoria annually – includes pet educators delivering their important message through animated presentations, song and role play. The program also introduced and developed concepts on choosing an appropriate pet, the importance of identification and registration, and housing, exercise and training for pets. Ewen McRae

If you know you can’t vote on Saturday 18 May, you can vote early. It’s amazing how powerful a piece of paper can be on election day. If you are an Australian citizen aged 18 years or over, you are required by law to vote. So, if you’re unable to make it to a polling place on election day, you can vote early at an early voting centre or apply for a postal vote. You can vote early if you are at work on Saturday 18 May, or will be outside the electorate where you are enrolled. There are other reasons you can vote early – visit www.aec.gov.au/early to find out more.

Heath to help for mental health Melton will host former AFL star Heath Black and comedian Em Rusciano at this week’s youth mental health forum. The ‘Minds Matter’ forum will be held on May 9 from 6-8.30pm, and aims to help adults, parents, carers and the school community better understand the mental health of young people aged 12 to 25. An expo of services will also be held before the forum, from 5-6pm. Both events will be held at Brookside College in Caroline Springs. Experts from headspace and Victoria Police will talk about identifying mental health issues, supporting young people and connecting them to relevant services, while Black and Rusciano will speak about their own battles with mental health. Veterinarian Dr Ken Coghill had a landslide victory of more than 4000 votes in the Werribee Electorate in Saturday’s State election. Dr Coghill, 34, polled 16,605 votes compared to company director Mr Stuart Southwick, 46, who polled 10,872 votes.

Kurunjang residents want to stop a proposed subdivision by a company known as Residential Development Pty Ltd. By the time the proposed subdivision comes before Melton Council, it is expected that almost 200 objections will be lodged by the residents.

Three State Labor MPs who on Monday night ran a public meeting have been given a fortnight to show they are genuine about restoring safety measures to the Melton Highway crib crossing or risk seeing the road and railway blocked by angry residents.

More than 200 Melton residents lost their job in the past year, Federal Government figures show, and employment agencies say young people are particularly vulnerable to job losses. The latest figures from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) show a 21 per cent increase in the number of job seekers receiving Newstart and youth allowances from Melton Centrelink.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir reconsiders a local favourite A regular sight that bemuses us when we’re seeking a feed in Flemington is people queuing up for a table at Laksa King. Good luck to them, but the CTS ethos usually leads us to going where the crowds aren’t. In Flemington and for Malaysian, that invariably means M Yong Tufu, but we are happy and keen to check out the new Laksa King family establishment – Laksa King Kitchen on Racecourse Road. The new Laksa King Kitchen boasts a chic-but-small dining area, though there is more seating upstairs. The staff are keen, happy and all a-bustle. The menu is a solid gathering of Malaysian staples divided into small/big bites, noodles, rice dishes, laksas and vegetarian. There is a nifty twist – laksas are offered in two sizes. This makes good sense, as regular laksas are always a big meal. Not that we can envisage a day when we would order the smaller size! Selections can be ascertained using the printed menu or on the laptop at each table, but the actual ordering is done via the latter. Bennie and I share a starter and have a bigger dish each. Lobak ($8.60) is less on flavour and crinkly beancurd than we would like, but it’s a fine beginning that delivers us three porky chunks. In a fine break with boring CTS practice, it is Bennie who orders a laksa – in this case, the bigger version of the angus beef outing ($13.50). It’s a big and handsome bowl-full but he is

Laksa king kitchen address: 328 Racecourse Road, Flemington so-so about the laksa as a whole – perhaps a higher spice level may have won him over? He does give, however, an enthusiastic 10/10 for the many tender beef chunks. And I get to try one of the eggplant pieces – it is wonderfully luscious and memorable. But still … That leaves me ordering the Hainan chicken rice ($13.50). The photos of the dish didn’t really inspire and that unease increases when I realise my rice meal will be eaten without the usual bowl of chicken soup on the side. But all is forgiven from the first mouthful of perfectly ginger-perfumed rice and onwards. This is a triumph and one of the best of this personal favourite I’ve had for a long time. There’s a lot of chook and it’s tender and expertly boned. The ginger mash, chilli sauce and soy accompaniments are excellent and in generous quantities and the wilted bean sprout/veg offering is likewise top notch. My mouth is doing a high-stepping boogie as we depart. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

On a block of about 830 square metres, in a well-regarded neighbourhood, this residence puts a Victorian-style face to the street, while indoors it’s streamlined-modern and beautifully presented. The kitchen, at one end of the floorboarded dining zone, is a standout space with its glossy mid-grey cabinetry, white stone benches and a glass splashback displaying a cityscape mural. Also on board are a stainless-steel dishwasher, underbench oven and cooktop, plus a corner pantry. Off the entry foyer and also linking with the dining zone, a spacious carpeted lounge room has both street and pergola-facing windows – dressed, as are most others, in grey roller blinds. There’s also a split-system, making it doubly perfect as a retreat when movie watching. Three fitted and carpeted bedrooms include one at the rear with a glass slider to the pergola, while the main has street views from a bay window. It also has a walk-in robe and sparkling en suite. The toilet and main bathroom are separate. As well as a large, east-facing covered pergola that’s nearly fully enclosed via lattice and blinds, there’s a second shadecloth-clad pergola running all along the northern side. The large backyard has oodles of lawn and a few mature trees. Also worth noting are the alarm system and CCTV, heating and cooling, roller shutters and CrimSafe security door and a drive-through double garage.

Mustangs come up short Melton Hockey put up a fight against PEGS but still fell short in Hockey Victoria Women’s Vic League 2. Looking for their first points of the season against the ladder-leading PEGS, the Mustangs were able to score twice, but it wasn’t enough, losing 4-2. Denique Dekelmans scored both goals for the Mustangs. Amy Schwarze was named the Mustangs best in the loss. The women’s metro B north west team though broke through for its first point of the season, drawing 4-4 with Altona. The Mustangs men’s Vic League 3 side pushed Craigieburn Falcons all the way in their match on Sunday. The Falcons though, got home, winning 3-2. Andrew Arnold and Steven Lawerence were the goalscorers for the Mustangs. The scores were reversed in the Mustangs and Falcons pennant G match, with the Mustangs winning 3-2. Riley Lawrence, who scored twice, and Ryan Self got the goals for the Mustangs. The Mustangs masters side lost 1-0 to KBH, while their metro B team lost 1-0 to RMIT. The weekend saw the junior competition kick off. The under-10 girls lost 2-1 to Footscray, under-10 Green lost to Altona 1-0 and under-10 Maroon lost to Footscray 5-3. The under-12 district north west team, won 5-0 in a walkover against Essendon, while the other under-12 team in pennant central north west lost to La Trobe University 3-1. The under-14s beat Footscray 5-1, while the under-16s beat Greensborough 3-1 and the under-16s lost 2-0 to Goulburn Valley.

Denique Dekelmans scored twice for Melton on Saturday. (Damjan Janevski)

Melton Thoroughbreds made it two wins in a row in Big V men’s division 2 on Saturday night. It was a fast start for the Thoroughbreds against the Altona Gators, jumping out to a 14-point lead at the first change. The Gators closed the gap over the next two quarters, with the Thoroughbreds lead cut to six points at the last break. But the Thoroughbreds steadied, winning 85-73. Wol Wol Ngong top scored with 18 points coming off the bench, with import Chris Johnson playing just 10 minutes after getting in foul trouble. The win keeps the Thoroughbreds in sixth spot. The Thoroughbreds women’s side had a tougher night, losing to the Sherbrooke Suns 75-60. A slow start proved costly for the Thoroughbreds, who were down by 13 points after the first break. Allanna Procak top scored with 13 points. The loss sees the Thoroughbreds slip to seventh spot with three wins for the year. It’s their third straight loss. The Thoroughbreds youth league men’s side also had a tough weekend, losing to the Craigieburn Eagles 101-85. The Eagles did all the damage early, leading by 31 points at half-time. Max Beaumont top scored with 23 for the Thoroughbreds, who slipped to fifth spot. Tara Murray

SPORT Westside Strikers step up with a golden victory Westside Strikers are starting to find their groove in FFV state league 4 west soccer. The Caroline Springs side is new to this level, so it was always going to take some time to make an impact. After a slow start, the Strikers have claimed points in their past three games, including their first two wins of the season. Strikers president Sam Raniolo said he was reasonably happy with how the season was going. This season is a different challenge for the Strikers, who dominated state league 5 last year. “We are starting to gel a bit more,” he said. “We have seven new players this season, so it does take a while for everyone to get to know each other.

“State 4 is a hard league and we’re only two years old with the senior side. “The last few weeks we’ve seen some good signs.” Raniolo said that in the first few weeks there had been too many draws, with the side unable to turn them into wins. He said that was something the players needed to work on. On Saturday, though, the Strikers turned in their best performance of the season by beating Golden Plains 5-0. Raniolo said it was a good match for the side. “We were 4-0 up at half-time, but in the second half took the foot off the pedal a little bit,” he said. “We did, though, make a few changes and gave everyone a run.”

The Strikers have moved up to fourth spot, with a 2-3-1 record. They will face their biggest test so far this week when they take on undefeated ladder leader Surf Coast. “Surf Coast up there will be a hard game,” Raniolo said. “It’s a good challenge and good indication of what we have to do and we will take on that challenge.” The Strikers’ junior sides took part in a gala day on Sunday in which they faced Williamstown junior teams. Williamstown won the first perpetual trophy, winning 13 matches to the Strikers’ 12. In other state league 4 games, Spring Hills had a tough day against Surf Coast, losing 4-0. Surf Coast scored twice in each half.

Rams remain positive By Tara Murray An improved performance by Rockbank still wasn’t enough to get a win in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. After a solid performance the previous week, the Rams put out their best performance against Lancefield on Saturday. The Rams stuck to the task for much of the game, but could not close an early lead. The Tigers won 19.15 (93)-6.12 (48). Rams coach Lachie Waterman said there was good signs for the side. “It was much improved and we’re chipping away,” he said. “We’re obviously under resourced, but again there were some positive signs.” The Tigers did much of the damage in the first half, leading by 35 points at the main break. After that, the Rams took to the task at hand and worked hard to get themselves back into the game, but they were unable to kick consecutive goals needed to get the momentum going their way. Waterman was impressed with how they finished. The teams kicked one goal apiece in the third quarter and the Tigers only outscored them by two points in the final quarter. “We took the game on in the last quarter and we kept running and persevering at playing the way I want them to,” he said. “We will take out a lot of positives. We are a little undermanned in terms of key forwards. “We would love a key forward.” Adam De Pasquale kicked two goals for the Rams. Waterman said Shane Bonney was the standout for their side. “Shane played on the wing and was fantastic for four quarters,” he said. “I think that is his spot. He has a good pair of hands and plays tall.” The Baumgartner brothers, Mitchell and Jordan, were also good players for the Rams. Already short on numbers, the Rams were dealt a blow with skipper Tom Mainey not playing the second half due to a hamstring injury. “We can’t afford to risk him,” Waterman said. “We erred on the side of caution.” Waterman said despite the tough nature of this season they were keeping positive. “We knew it would be a tough year and we have to dust ourselves off and go again,” he said. “The morale has been good all year, we just have to learn how to win, which takes time. “The morale, the spirit and the effort are still there.” Waterman said he hoped a few players would return in the next couple of weeks. In other results, Diggers Rest and Melton Centrals both remain undefeated. The Burras had an easy win against 26 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 7, 2019

The Stallions slip to fifth spot, one point behind Westside Strikers. In state league 5 west, Melton Phoenix suffered a 1-0 loss to Maidstone United. The Phoenix currently sit in eighth with seven points. In state league 1 north-west, Caroline Springs George Cross’ winning streak was halted at two wins. The Georgies were no match for Altona City, losing 3-1. Alex Dimond was the scorer for the Georgies, who are eighth on the ladder with two wins for the season. This week they will face Brimbank Stallions. Tara Murray

Last year’s runners-up Melton Football Club has had eight players named in the Ballarat Football League’s 2019 WorkSafe Community Championships squad. All 11 teams have players named in the squad, but the Bloods have the most. Bacchus Marsh has seven players in the squad, including Riley and Nick Stuhldreier, the sons of interleague coach Chris Stuhldreier. Four Darley and three Melton South players have also been selected in the representative team which will play the Hampden Football Netball League on May 18. For the full squad, go to www.starweekly.com. au/sports.

Hillside fell just short of ending East Keilor’s winning start to the Essendon District Football League division 1 season. While the Cougars led at each break, the Sharks were within striking distance throughout. The Cougars did enough in the last quarter, to ensure the 15.11 (101)-12.13 (85) win. Brandon Coletta kicked six goals in his return to the side to be named the Sharks’ best. In division 2, Burnside Heights remains undefeated after beating the Northern Saints. The Bears trailed by 20 points at the main break, before scoring eight goals to four in the second half to win, 13.9 (87)-12.9 (81).

Netball

Melton and Darley scored their first wins of the Ballarat Football Netball League season on Saturday. Melton managed to hold on to win comfortably against Bacchus Marsh with the final scores, 50-47. The Bloods led at every change. Paige Gilcrist scored 44 goals for the winners. Darley had to come from behind against Melton South in their win. The Devils trailed by nine goals at quarter-time and worked hard to reduce that margin over the next two quarters. A 14-4 final quarter sealed the 44-38 win for the Devils. Melanie Freeman scored 28 goals for the Devils. Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Melton and Melton South all have one win after three rounds. Rockbank’s Jordan Baumgartner takes a strong mark. (Shawn Smits)

Broadford, which could have been a lot more impressive if not for poor kicking. The Burras won 13.20 (98)-4.3 (27). Melton Centrals welcomed a key win against Woodend-Hesket.

Coming off the bye, the Centrals won 9.8 (62)-6.8 (44). Dylan Weir kicked four goals in the win. The Burras and Centrals face each other this week.

Panthers rattled by a powerhouse display from Darley Melton South saw first hand what Darley can do in this year’s Ballarat Football League season. After showing some encouraging signs in the first two rounds, the Panthers were well and truly beaten by the Devils on Saturday. The Devils put in their best performance of the season, winning 22.18 (150)-5.7 (37). Panthers coach Heath Pritchard said while they had their worst performance of the season, they were also beaten by a better team. He said on that form, the Devils should go deep into the season. “They are the best side that we’ve played and they took us away from the way we want to play,” he said. “We were very disappointed having played some really good footy in the first two rounds. “We had a bad day which is going to happen when you have a young side. “We need to get back to playing how we were in the first two weeks. “We’re not throwing the baby out with the bath water.” Brody Sullivan was the only multiple

goalkicker for the Panthers, while Brian Graham kicked five goals in his first game back for the Devils in a best-on-ground performance. Pritchard said Paul Bower was their best in the loss. He said Lachie Watkins and Dale Houghton were also good. A couple of the Panthers’ young guns showed some good signs. “Cody Chapman and Mitchell Fino both tried hard,” Pritchard said. “We’re playing a number of 18-19 year-olds which is great for the future. “It makes it hard sometimes when they come up against bigger bodies.” Pritchard said the young players getting games were earning their spots, not just playing for development. He said it was a juggling act to make sure they don’t burn out. “They have shown a fair bit of a presence so far,” he said. “It is a bit of a long burn with them.” Pritchard said the key for them this season was to replicate how they played in the first

couple of weeks when they took it up to the Sunbury Lions in round two. The Panthers have two weeks off with the bye and interleague and then face a tough game against reigning premiers East Point. The Panthers will have played the top-three sides from last season in their first four games. “We would have preferred to have played this week,” Pritchard said. “After a loss like that you want to get back at it.” Melton returned to the winners’ list, beating Bacchus Marsh 11.15 (81)-5.13 (43). Connor Griffiths was best on ground for the Bloods. The Bloods have two wins but the Cobras are still without a win. Tara Murray

Rockbank’s Ashlee Bertocci outreaches her Lancefield opponent. (Shawn Smits)

Rams win a tough fight By Tara Murray Rockbank had to fight for all 60 minutes to seal victory against Lancefield in the Riddell District Netball League. The Rams entered the game as favourites, but that meant little on the court as the Tigers took it up to them. The Tigers led for much of the match, with the Rams leaving it late to take control. That late spurt was enough for the Rams to get a 46-42 win. Rams coach Nathan Selvidge said it wasn’t their best game, but he was happy to come away with the win. “Those are the hard games that you are expecting to win, but can drop quite easily,” he said. “They put up a good fight and we’re just hoping we can build from this against the harder teams. “We made a lot of mistakes in that first half especially. We can build on that and work forward together as a team.” The Rams had to dig deep, with Selvidge going to his bench on several occasions.

Ashlee Bertocci came on early in the first quarter, while Ruiana Magatogia and Maddison Taylor-Stewart came on early in the second half. The Rams then made changes midway through the last quarter, including bringing on Rebecca McCubbin into goals. “We made a couple of changes at half-time, and they really made a difference,” Selvidge said. He said goal shooter Jess Christie hurt her knee during the week and he knew McCubbin could shoot. “I thought I would chuck it out there and see what happened,” he said. Selvidge said that even this early in the season, they were showing that they had plenty of options in both A-grade and B-grade sides. The Rams were missing three players from their normal team on Saturday. Selvidge, who was appointed coach just weeks before the season started, said things were going quite well despite the interrupted pre-season. “A lot of mates from social comps have

come and helped me out,” he said. “We’ve also picked up a fair few players in the last couple of weeks. “We had one girl play in B-grade today who is a really good shooter. Our keeper [Taylor-Stewart], who came on at half-time, we picked her up two weeks ago. We’re still building.” The win takes the Rams to a 3-1 record, having been competitive in their defeat at the hands of Wallan. Selvidge said they were looking forward to the challenge of facing top sides such as Romsey and Rupertswood in the next couple of weeks. “We’ll see how we go against them and continue to build.” In other results, Melton Centrals and Woodend-Hesket played out a 39-39 draw. The Hawks came from five goals down at three-quarter time to level the scores. Eliza Tiley was the Centrals’ best. Diggers Rest had a big win against Broadford, winning 54-32. Rupertswood and Macedon were the other winners.

A massively improved Hillside team is shining in the Essendon District Football League Women’s competition. After winning just three games last season, the Sharks have already won two games in the premier division this season. Sharks coach Justin Fairservice said the players were the driving force. “The girls have worked really hard,” he said. “They’re a lot stronger and fitter and it’s a credit to them. “Most have played 17 games now and they love football – it’s fantastic.” On paper, the Sharks had one of the tougher starts to the season, facing three of the past season’s top four in the first four rounds. They beat new-look reigning premier Pascoe Vale, copped a big loss to Westmeadows and took it up to the Sunbury Kangaroos in round three. On Sunday, the Sharks were too good for Craigieburn, winning 15.12 (102)-1.1 (7). Speaking before the weekend’s game, Fairservice said he was thrilled. “It’s been really good and to get that first-up win against Pascoe Vale, the premiers of last season, is really great,” he said. “Against the Sunbury Kangaroos we lost by 84 points last time, while it was 24 point this year. “That’s a 10-goal improvement. We were five points down at half-time and we were rapt.” Fairservice said the Sharks’ group was similar to that of last season, having lost about five players and added about 10. He said it was encouraging that they were attracting new players. The improvement means increased expectations. While last year was about learning the game and maybe getting some wins along the way, this year there is a strong focus on taking things to the next level. “We would like to stay in premier division,” Fairservice said. “We think we deserve to be there. We’re going in expecting to win a few games. “It’s a different feeling to last season … a good feeling.” In other results, Burnside Heights lost 9.15 (69)-1.2 (8) to Keilor.
