A GoFundMe page was set up with a $5000 cap to provide short-term help for the family. The target was reached inside two days, with Andy saying the family had been “overwhelmed” by the response. “It’s been absolutely incredible,” he said. “We basically had the clothes on our back, so just being able to have some clean clothes, shoes, toiletries – all those essential that you need – has been fantastic. “We’re incredibly thankful to the whole Darley community and the council for the help that has been offered in the days since the fire. “The phone hasn’t stopped ringing with people wanting to help our family.” Andy said the family planned to eventually rebuild the house.

Andy Lutze was driving back to his Darley home on May 4 when he realised something was wrong. As he got closer he could see emergency services vehicles blocking his street. When his daughter Rachael’s fiance came running up to the car in tears, he feared the worst. Less than an hour earlier, an inferno had ripped through his home, destroying much of the house and a lifetime of memories. “My initial thought when I saw Jason was that my daughter had been killed in a car accident and my heart just sank to the floor,” Andy said. “So when Jason told me that everyone was OK
“It’s one of the worst things ever to come home to and find your house burned down. “But I take comfort that if that fire had started an hour later, my grandson would have been in that bed and the story would have been much different. That’s just incomprehensible.” The fire claimed much of the house, along with furniture, clothes, photo albums and memories. One of the family cats died of smoke inhalation, while another is still missing. On top of all that, Rachael and Jason were due to move into their new home in Bacchus Marsh this week, and had stored most of their furniture at the Darley house. They lost everything in the blaze, with their belongings not covered under the insurance of Andy and Sara.
and it was only the house it was almost a sigh of relief.” Earlier in the evening, Andy’s wife, Sara, was getting their six-year-old grandson, Chase, ready for bed, turning on the electric blanket and preparing his dinner. It wasn’t long before Sara and Rachael heard a noise from the bedroom. When they investigated they found the blanket had caught fire. The fire was soon out of control. “They called triple-0 immediately and tried to smother the fire, but once it reached the doona it all went up,” Andy said. “It’s a four-poster bed, so it crept up that quickly and into the ceiling, exploding the solar panels, and within about eight minutes about two thirds of the house had burned down.

Freeway ‘gridlock’ cops a serve By Ewen McRae Congestion on the Western Freeway is contributing to more collisions and dangerous driving, according to local police. Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier from Melton Highway Patrol said police had seen a number of “nose-to-tail” collisions during the morning and afternoon peaks in recent times. And he said the problem was getting worse. “It’s obviously building at a rapid rate,” he said. “Due to the growth in the area, the peak times in the morning and evening run for
about two-and-a-half hours at each end of the day, so the congestion is getting worse. “I suppose we’re not getting as many serious collisions because the speed is reduced … but certainly frustration levels are on the rise. “We’re getting dangerous driving, with people using emergency lanes, weaving in and out of traffic and road rage stuff – it is concerning. “With our roads becoming gridlocked due to the growth of the region, there’s no doubt we’d like to see more works done on our roads to help alleviate that congestion.”
Melton council has had a long-running campaign pushing both state and federal governments to provide upgrades to the Western Freeway, with an ongoing petition to local MPs and ministers collecting more than 3800 signatures. “It’s called a freeway so it should be at freeway standard,” Sergeant Stuhldreier said. “We shouldn’t have these issues … I understand these things takes time, but I’m not even sure this road is on the radar. All those collisions along the road just shut things down more and are a drain on police resources.”
Sergeant Stuhldreier raised concerns about pedestrians trying to cross the freeway near Woodgrove Shopping Centre “We’ve found that around the Melton Youth Centre at the junction of Barries Road and [the] freeway appears to be a common point where fences are cut down and people are crossing the freeway,” he said. “That’s certainly dangerous and risky behaviour that we want to stop. “VicRoads do repair the fences, but we’ve seen some close calls and we want to avoid any accidents before they happen.”

Melton students profit from practice profit, which is obviously important in the real world. “Students in the classroom, in many subjects, will often ask, ‘How is this useful in real life?’ – so this is a practical way of answering that.” Among the small businesses popping up are a carwash, cake stall, second-hand toys and T-shirts. Ms Justus said students were learning tools that would be useful in many aspects of their lives beyond their business studies work. “This is concerning business, but … it can
be adapted to a family and learning how to manage their money,” she said. “You still need the income to be greater than the expenses – this is true in many situations in life. “So far the students are doing very well. I’ve had my car washed by that particular group and they acted professionally and did a great job. “It’s all a learning process for all the students – and they’re all learning from their mistakes and getting better each day.”

Business studies students are spending May running a variety of small enterprises, learning about salesmanship and marketing, with half the profits going to a charity of their choice. Melton councillor Melissa De Santis has resigned from the council, effective immediately. Cr De Santis cited personal reasons for her decision. Melton mayor Bob Turner thanked Cr De Santis for her time on council and her contribution to the community. “On behalf of council, I would like to thank Melissa for the positive contribution she has made to the City of Melton community over the past two and a half years,” Cr Turner said. “While on council, she strongly advocated for improvement to public transport, access to education and support for the homeless, young people and family violence survivors.” The vacancy will be filled after a countback by the Victorian Electoral Commission of results from the last council election. A date for the countback is yet to be set. Cr De Santis was elected to the council’s Coburn ward in October, 2016, with the third highest percentage of votes.

As the Fire Danger Period finishes in the local area, the CFA has urged residents to exercise extreme caution when burning off. The Fire Danger period ended for this district on May 13. Melton health on centre stage By Ewen McRae The multi-million dollar Melton Health and Community Services centre has been unveiled, bringing together a variety of health services under the one roof. The $21 million centre will be home to services offered by Djerriwarrh Health Services, Melbourne Health-Mid West Area Mental Health Service, MacKillop Family Services, CoHealth and Odyssey House Victoria. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos, who opened the centre last week, said bringing together
connected services in the same building would deliver better health outcomes for Melton. “The Melton health hub is a one-stop shop to give the growing community better access to the health services that everybody needs – all under the one roof,” she said. “We know that time-poor families need convenience … that’s exactly what this hub offers.” The Barries Road facility features consulting rooms, group rooms, a gym, training and assessment rooms, and a kitchen, as well as staff areas and a mental health tribunal room.
The centre will provide access to health services for women, children and families, while indigenous health services, chronic disease intervention and prevention, and mental health, drug and alcohol support are also available. The centre currently has 500 patients a week using its services, with that number expected to grow. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott said the centre was an important addition for the growing community. “Having all these services sharing a facility means there are more opportunities for
collaboration and [it] removes some barriers,” Ms Scott said. “It’s really important because the centre is really designed around vulnerable families … they are more likely to fall through the cracks. “Having all the service partners under the one roof means that it’s less likely that will happen, so we have better outcomes for families in our community. “There is significant growth in our community and there is a significant need for the services on offer here across the west and in the Djerriwarrh catchment.”
Dream big for homeless A night sleeping under the stars at the mighty MCG has become an annual pilgrimage for Melton South’s Lauren Kelly. Ms Kelly will rug up for the Sleep at the ’G event for the sixth time on May 16, helping to raise much-needed funds for the Melbourne City Mission and its push to end youth homelessness. Ms Kelly has attended the event ever since she heard the story of Morgan ‘Mouse’ Perry, who was killed while sleeping under a bridge in Enterprize Park in 2014. “He didn’t deserve to live this way and he most certainly did not deserve to die this way,” Ms Kelly said. “I hadn’t realised we had so many people experiencing homelessness in Australia. After investigating this further, I found the Sleep at the ’G event and immediately registered to attend. “I want to continue supporting the great work MCM does … I also believe that attending
this event each year helps to keep the memory of Morgan ‘Mouse’ Perry alive. “Our team name has been Team Mouse’s Enterprize, in memory of Morgan and the place he lost his life.” Over the years, Team Mouse’s Enterprize has raised $11,000 for the work of MCM. “I have always had a great night at the event, spending the night with like-minded people who care about making a difference to youth homelessness brings a smile to my face,” Ms Kelly said. “I will be dusting off my unicorn onesie, my mermaid tail blankie, a few little snacks and, as always, a poster with Morgan’s pic to make sure he is remembered.” Details: www.sleepattheg.com.au Ewen McRae Lauren Kelly is taking part in the Sleep at the ’G. Wheelie going places By Ewen McRae It’s a long road from Bacchus Marsh to Europe – one Chandler Cooper has travelled on two wheels. Cooper, 18, has just returned from Europe where he competes in the Moto 2 classification after several years in the junior world championship circuit. It was in Bacchus Marsh and Melton that he first fell in love with motorcycles and competing on them.

The speed and adrenaline is what really grabbed me - Chandler Cooper

“I started racing as a kid on a peewee, racing at the Bacchus Marsh Motocross track,” he said. “My dad encouraged me, as he rode in his early days. The speed and adrenaline is what really grabbed me in the early days – and the jumps were exciting. “After the first year of competing in Moto 3, I began to realise that I had speed and perhaps I could make a career out of doing something that I enjoy so much.” Cooper was born in Bacchus Marsh and lived there for his early childhood before moving to Williamstown. He attended school in Melton and now lives in Strathtulloh with his family when he is not competing in Europe. He said competing against the best riders of his age group in the world had its challenges, but he was enjoying it. “It’s amazing,” he said. “Competition-wise, it is so flowing and fast … the friendships you develop with the team around you and fellow

riders has been great. This year I changed to Moto 2, which was a bit challenging to adjust to, especially the amount of focus and involvement towards the bike set-up, which is much more important than you would expect. “I’ve approached it quite well this year … while I am Australia I will be doing a lot of
training and practice days on local tracks to work on my form.” Cooper said former Australian champion Casey Stoner had been a big influence, while he hoped to join the likes of motorcycle legend Valentino Rossi on the world stage next year. “I’ve got my fingers crossed for the world championship next year,” he said.

Ballarat in with a flying chance Ballarat Airport will receive a major facelift if the Labor Party is able to form government at this weekend’s federal election. Local MP Catherine King and opposition infrastructure spokesman Anthony Albanese announced a $14 million investment to the airport, which would open it up to larger aircraft. The airport’s main north-south runway has been cut in half by an access road. This project will re-join the two parts of the runway and upgrade the surface to ensure year-round access. Ms King said the expansion would be a financial boon for the region. “The expansion of the runway at Ballarat Airport will allow larger aircraft to fly in and out of Ballarat, encouraging further economic development across our region,” Ms King said. “This expansion will be the first step towards developing Ballarat Airport into a facility appropriate for a growing regional city.” The two most common regional passenger aircraft used in Australia are the Dash 8 and SAAB-340, which require runway lengths of about 1600 metres. Ballarat Airport’s runways are only 1245 metres. This project will increase the main runway’s length to at least 1800 metres. Overall, the project will cost $22.5 million to complete. The City of Ballarat will fund the remainder of the project. Ewen McRae

MY PLACE Niki Risteski runs Zumba classes at the Taylors Hill Neighbourhood House. She spoke with Ewen McRae. What is your connection to Taylors Hill?
have a laugh . At the end of each term I organise a class with other Zumba instructors and we all teach together, giving the students a taste of different Zumba styles. We have barbecues, tea and coffee and get to know each other. We also have fun themed classes. For example, I will be having a glow theme for the Monday class for Mother’s Day and you get to bring your mum for free. Kids are always welcome to my classes for free with their parents as well so it also creates a place for parents to be active together with their children.
I lived in Taylors Hill when it was first established for a few years and then I moved to Sydney where I married my husband. After 14 years we decided it was a good time to move our family to a place we felt at home and safe and where all of my family live. What do you like best about the area? I love the community! The people in the area are friendly. There is everything we need here – shops, buses, supermarket, doctors – it’s convenient.
When do you run your classes? I teach Zumba for adults on Monday and Thursday at 6.30-7.30pm and now we have begun a Zumba kids class on Wednesday afternoons from 4.30-5.15pm
What could make the area better? Maybe a police station that is manned 24/7 in case of any emergencies and maybe upgrade some of the parks in the older estates. (Joe Mastroianni)
Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in the area? We enjoy going to Toscanini’s in CS Square, the food is delicious, and Slices in Caroline Springs.
I am one of the tutors at the Neighbourhood House and I teach Zumba and Zumba kids. I love giving back to the community so the Neighbourhood House is the best place for me. How did you become involved? I decided to look into places where I could
teach my Zumba classes and stumbled upon the Neighbourhood House. I had a look around and found that it was exactly the type of place where I would love to teach, close to home and a part of the community. This is where I began teaching my first ever Zumba class. I ran four weeks of free Zumba during Active April and it had such a great response we decided we would make it a permanent class. The class grew from once a week to now three classes a week.

I love watching the kids dance with their parents and even better when they come up to the front and teach with me, it makes my heart full of love.

Students Toko, Carson, Tameka and Caylee will be walking to school next week. (Luke Hemer)
Walk to better health The healthy lifestyle message will be heard loud and clear at Balliang East Primary School this week as they take part in National Walk Safely To School Day. The school’s 75-strong contingent will take part in the May 17 event, which encourages school children across the country to walk to school as an easy first step towards regular exercise. Principal Caryn Fox said it was something the school loved being involved in. “Where we are located makes it hard for the students to walk to school,” Ms Fox said. “The majority of the kids get driven to school, so we have a meeting place about a kilometre from the school, and the staff and students meet there in the morning and then walk down
to school. We do the same at the end of the day too. It’s good for the kids to get involved in learning about a healthy lifestyle.” Pedestrian Council of Australia chief executive Harold Scruby said the day was an important way of tackling childhood obesity. “The extremely disturbing childhood obesity epidemic continues to affect 1 in 4 children at critical levels across Australia,” he said. “The best exercise for all of us is regular walking. “Children require at least 60 minutes per day of physical activity. We should encourage them to include walking at the beginning, during and end of each day.” Ewen McRae

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a Balkan beauty in Ardeer A Balkan restaurant, affiliated to a soccer club, in Ardeer – perfect for a CTS adventure. Balkan Grill is located in the clubrooms of Westgate Sindjelic FC and is just a few weeks old when we – myself, Bennie and Nat – pay a dinner visit. Balkan Grill is the brainchild of Danilo Majmunovic. He’s an experienced chef who’s cooked all over Australia. And now he’s set up shop in Ardeer – and we reckon that’s a smart move. It’s not like there’s a lot of competition in this rather lovely residential backwater. And the prices hit the CTS sweet spot – a few things over $20, but not many. Nat goes with the cevapi u slanini ($20) – Danilo’s cevapi wrapped in bacon and served with chopped onion on a “Sarajevo somun” roll. Nat likes his cevapi plenty, accompanying them with a side serve of good fries ($3.50). Bennie selects gurmanska pljeskavica – 285 grams of homemade minced pork and beef, seasoned with secret ingredients, filled with triple smoked ham and cheese ($20). Again, this is superb meat and Bennie loves it. The cheese and ham really is top-grade stuff. Bennie, too, gets a side of chips with his meat offering – and also a side of Balkan Grill’s cabbage salad ($2). He gives the Balkan Grill version a hefty two thumbs up. I order the mixed grill ($28) – and to be honest, I’m not quite sure what the hell I was thinking. This half-kilogram vegetarian’s
Balkan Grill address: 8-14 Helene Street, Ardeer (entry via Yallourn Street) Phone: 0438 887 017 nightmare is ridiculous; preposterous. In fact, better to think of it as a share platter for two – and at $14 each, that’s a dead-set bargain. As well as slight variations of the meat deals ordered by Nat and Bennie, it also features BBQ sausages (rostiljska kobasica), pork neck medallion and dimljena vesalica (smoked pork tenderloin). The meat is served with kajmak (a sort of creamed feta), ajvar (red pepper relish) and cabbage salad. It’s all very good. There’s a final delicious surprise in store for us at Balkan Grill. Finding Balkan grilled fare at an Ardeer soccer club is thoroughly wonderful, of course. But finding all that AND that the chef also creates all his own desserts – including cakes and baklava – is superbly shocking. Bennie nods enthusiastically during his consumption of Danilo’s Ferrero Rocher cake. The price is $4.50. Gosh.

Burras steady for a win By Tara Murray Diggers Rest scored its second win of the Riddell District Netball League season, beating Melton Centrals on Saturday afternoon. After a confidence-boosting win the week before, the Burras continued that form on Saturday against Centrals. It was an even first half and the Burras lead by two goals at the long break. A 17-4 goal third quarter turned the game in the favour of the Burras, who were able to keep the momentum going to win 58-34. Kathy Dicker shot 44 goals for the Burras, while Teagan Tiley shot 13 goals for Centrals. Dicker was named the Burras best along with defenders Anica Scherer and Maggie Payne. The win moves the Burras to sixth spot with a 2-2 record, having also had a bye. Centrals sit one spot further back. In other matches, Rockbank took it up to Rupertswood. The Sharks led all day, but the Rams never went away and like last week finished strongly. They were too far behind though and lost 40-35. Rebecca McCubbin scored 15 goals for the Rams. Caitlin Twomey in the mid court was the Rams’ best. For the Sharks, Clare Johnson was the standout. Riddell almost claimed the scalp of Wallan, falling just short. In the closest game of the round, the Magpies led all day in the 50-47 win. The Bombers didn’t give up, closing the margin from eight goals at half time to three at the final siren. Rebecca Hicks shot 73 goals in Romsey’s 82-27 win against Lancefield. Macedon was too strong for Woodend-Hesket, winning 65-25. Katie Clarke was best on court for the Cats.

Spring Hills pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Truganina 5-4 in Football Federation Victoria state league 4 west. The Stallions were in trouble at 4-2 down, but fought back with three late goals to win. Captain Rhys Main scored twice for the Stallions, while Jarrod Febbraio, Gurkarnvir Singh and Matthew Walachowski all scored as well. The win means the Stallions move up to fourth on the ladder, with a 3-2-2 record. The Stallions this week face second-placed Altona North. Westside Strikers fell short in the biggest test in state league 4 west, losing to ladder leaders Surf Coast at home. Surf Coast scored a goal in each half to beat the Strikers 2-0. The Strikers slip to sixth on the ladder. In state league 1 north-west, Caroline Springs George Cross suffered another loss. Facing the higher ranked Brimbank Stallions, the Georgies lost 1-0. The Georgies sit ninth with a 2-1-4 record. In state league 5 west, it was a tough day for Melton Phoenix who found themselves down 2-0 at half-time to Barnstoneworth United with a lot of work ahead of themselves. SPORT Thoroughbreds gallop back to winning ways Melton Thoroughbreds got a much-needed win in Big V women’s division basketball on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds had lost their previous three games, so victory and finals hopes were very much on their minds. For the most part, the game against the Mornington Breakers was an even affair, with the second quarter proving to be the difference. The Thoroughbreds won that quarter 25-17 – and eight points would be the final margin in the 70-62 win. Thoroughbreds coach Lauren Olcorn said the performance was her players’ best of the season so far. “We’ve been aiming the last couple of weeks to get back on track,” she said. “It was a pretty strong game and we stuck to the game plan. We made a focus of winning the board, which is something we’ve struggled with.
“We were able to do that and didn’t slacken off.” Olcorn said the difference this week was the side’s ability to deliver consistent basketball for four quarters. “We would have one poor quarter and we wouldn’t be able to pull out of the lull and had to play catch-up basketball,” she said. “We spoke after the game about playing together as a team on the floor and having that consistency over four quarters. “We showed what we have to do every week now.” Olcorn said another pleasing element of the win was the even team performance, with everyone playing the role they had been allocated. All nine players who got on court scored, with Jenna Conroy top scoring with 14 points. The win leaves the Thoroughbreds with a 4-4 record.
Olcorn said she was hopeful the victory was something she and the players could improve upon in the coming weeks. “It’s early enough in the season, we can set aside those four losses,” she said. “We’re by no means shutting down – we know we can get back into the top four again. We want to push on with more wins.” The Thoroughbreds’ men had a massive 100-77 win against the Mornington Breakers. Chris Johnson stop-scored with 23 points, while Deakin Pereira shot 18. The win is the Thoroughbreds’ third in a row as they continue to pressure the top four. It was a hat-trick of wins for the Thoroughbreds against the Breakers, with their youth league 2 men’s side winning 84-76. Max Beaumont continued his good form by top-scoring with 17 points. Tara Murray
Young talent takes off By Tara Murray Melton Hockey’s next generation will be on show at the Junior State Championships in July. Gabe Cumming, Grace Downes and Chloe Schwarze have all been named in the North West Metro Tigers teams for the tournament which pits the best players in the state against other. For two of the three, it will be their first time at the championships, while Schwarze is returning to the competition after missing last year. Mustangs chairman Royce Schwarze said it was a wonderful result for the players and the club. “It is really good for them,” he said. “What they learn is massive as they’re playing against the best players in the state. “They see how competitive everyone is and they can bring it back to the club “You can’t get this experience at the local level.” For 17-year-old Schwarze, the championships are a moment she’s been looking forward to. She was part of the gold-medal winning team in 2017, but had to watch it all from the sidelines last year. Two days out from the championships she hurt her knee, which ruled her out of trying out for last year’s team. Schwarze has been playing senior hockey since 2012, including making her top-side debut in 2015. Her father said she was excited to go back and try and win another gold medal, this time in the under-18s. “Chloe is especially excited,” Royce Schwarze said. “She was keen to go back and make amends after missing out last year. She’s made a lot of good friends in the last six years.” For Downes and Cumming it will be a new experience. Downes, who will play in the under-13s, has made the team in her first try. Downes made her senior debut with the club last season, playing in both their Vic League 2 side and metro B north-west team. Schwarze said it was great to see young players such as Downes playing at state level and with the senior sides at the club. Cumming, who is still playing in under-16s at the Mustangs, made his senior debut this season in the men’s metro B north-west side. The 16-year-old has been named in the under-18 Tigers team. Schwarze said he believed it was the first time the goalkeeper had tried out for the team. He said it was tougher for the boys to make state teams.

Melton made it two wins in a row in the Ballarat Netball League on Saturday. After beating Bacchus Marsh the previous week, the Bloods accounted for Darley 45-34. The Bloods set the win up in the first half. Paige Gilcrist shot 35 goals for the Bloods. Bacchus Marsh returned to the winners’ list by beating Ballarat 59-53. Annie Hills shot 35 goals for the Cobras in the win.
NAB League
The Western Jets had a tough weekend in the NAB League. The boys’ side was well beaten by the Dandenong Stingrays on Saturday. The Stingrays led at every break in the 16.13 (109)-6.10 (46) win. Eddie Ford kicked two goals for the Jets. The girls’ side finished its season with a 9.6 (60)-1.3 (9) loss to the Stingrays. Ruby Tripodi was named the Jets’ best. The Jets finished the season in ninth with three wins – their best season to date.
EDFL
Hillside came away with the points in a hard-fought win against West Coburg in Essendon District Football League division 1. After a game in which neither team could take complete control, the Sharks won 14.14 (98)-13.10 (88). Victor Micallef, Brandon Coletta and Stephen Syme kicked two goals each for the Sharks, while Jackson Volpato was named their best. The Sharks are fifth after five rounds. In division 2, Burnside Heights had the bye.
AFL Goldfields
Chloe Schwarze, Gabe Cumming and Grace Downes have been named in play in the state championships. (Mark Wilson)
“We’ve had a couple of boys make the side in recent years, but it’s tough with a lot of the boys who try out for our zone are state reps. “It means that there’s only two or three spots available.” Schwarze said all the young talent at the club was encouraging for the future. He said seeing players at the higher level, would encourage more players to try out to make those teams.
Meanwhile on the weekend, the Mustangs men’s Vic League 3 side had a 3-2 win against RMIT. Steve Lawrence scored two goals, while Teejay Lawrence scored the other goal. The Masters side had an easy 8-1 win at home against Melbourne High School Old Boys, while the metro men’s side had a 3-1 win.
Melton got a second straight win in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition on Sunday. The Bloods proved way too strong for Carisbrook, winning 8.10 (58)-3.6 (24). Telia Coverdale kicked three goals for the Bloods. Melton Centrals remain undefeated after beating Darley 15.19 (109)-0.0 (0). Hannah Johnson kicked five goals in the win. Bacchus Marsh lost to Gisborne 5.6 (36)-3.2 (20).

Melton keeps in touch at the top with win over Darley Melton got an early crucial win in the context of its season, beating Darley in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. As East Point and Darley are the early front runners in the competition, the Bloods were looking for a scalp to keep in touch with the top side and they set their sights on the Devils on Saturday. Putting in their best performance of the season, the Bloods won the game they were after, beating the Devils 12.15 (87)-9.3 (57). Bloods coach Aaron Tymms said while they would have been happy to be 2-2 at this point of the season, the win, which makes them 3-1, keeps them up with the top sides. “It was good to get the win,” he said. “If we went down, we would have been two games behind Darley and East Point. “It’s good to stay in the pack.”
Tymms said it was a good match in the opening half before they exerted their influence. The margin could have quite easily been bigger as the Bloods were again wasteful in front of goal. “The first half it was a really good hit out,” Tymms said. “We were really strong defensively and they couldn’t score going forward. “The second half was really good. They kicked four goals late in the last quarter, after we’d taken off a few guys. Braedan Kight kicked five goals for the Bloods, while Jake Edwards was the only multiple goal scorer for the Devils, with two goals. Connor Griffiths was named the Bloods’ best for the third time this season and Tymms said Griffiths has taken the next step this year.
The Bloods now have two weeks off, with interleague this week and the bye the week after. The Bloods had eight players named in the initial interleague squad and Tymms said it was pleasing to see the players getting recognition. However he said it wasn’t ideal having two weeks off in a row. “We tried to organise a practice match for the bye weekend against another side that had a bye, but it didn’t work out,” he said. “We’ll have a big hit-out on the Thursday before the bye.” The Bloods should receive a big boost for their next match against the Sunbury Lions, as several players are set to return from injury. Tymms said Matt Denham, Ben Archard
Centrals on the improve By Tara Murray Melton Centrals have closed the gap on the Riddell District Football League’s top sides if Saturday’s result against Diggers Rest is anything to go by. The Centrals have been touched up by the Burras in coach Mathew Sproule’s time at the club, but Saturday’s performance was a different story. While it never looked like the Burras wouldn’t come away with the win, Centrals showed they couldn’t be taken lightly in their 16.10 (106)-11.8 (74) loss. Sproule said the match was a good indication of where Centrals were in the scheme of things, with the two teams entering the match undefeated. “It was a free kick for us, as no one expected us to win, especially without having Dylan [Weir],” he said. “We were hopeful of seeing where we fitted in and how much we had improved and if we had closed the gap. It showed we are heading in the right direction.” Sproule said Centrals had moments in the game when they could have put more pressure on the Burras. Diggers Rest looked like it would run away with the game in the first half, at one stage kicking nine goals out of 10. But Centrals steadied to keep themselves in the game at half-time. “The third quarter was a missed opportunity,” Sproule said. “We missed three or four sitters that would have put us close to level. “And as good sides are, they took their opportunities. We played well in the last quarter.” Four players kicked two goals apiece for the Rams, while Cole Laurie kicked four goals at the other end for the Burras. Sproule said a positive sign for the centrals was two youngsters were among their best three players. “I can’t understand how Lachlan Phillips isn’t getting a game for the Western Jets,” he said. “Jarrod Spry has been good in the back line and is owning his position. Mick Callus was the other stand-out.” Sproule said he and his players were not getting too comfortable, despite sitting in second place. He said they faced a tough seven-week period that would involve playing a lot of the finals contenders. A scalp or two would be required if Centrals were to make the finals. “We’re going into every game now believing that we can win it if we play our best football,” he said. “We’re not going in thinking we will be blown out – it’s more about that belief in the side. “We still have a lot of improvement and our recruits keep getting better. We think we are good enough.” Centrals have this weekend off due to interleague before they face Rupertswood the 28 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 14, 2019

following week. Leading goal-kicker Dylan Weir will return after serving a one-game suspension. In other results, Macedon found some form against Woodend-Hesket, winning 14.15 (99)-7.3 (45).
Riddell beat Wallan 21.12 (138)-9.8 (62). Rupertswood smashed Rockbank 43.21 (279)-0.1 (1). Nick Grigg kicked eight goals. Mitch Jensen and Jack Jedwab kicked seven goals each in the Redbacks’ 32.25(217)-0.0 (0) win against Lancefield.

He said it would give the club a few selection headaches. “We’re happy with how things are going about,” he said. “The young kids filling the spots have been doing the jobs they’ve been asked. “We’ve been winning without our stars which is pleasing. “You don’t want to drop the kids who are playing well, but you want to pick your best team. “It will be a hard one in a couple of weeks.” In other results, Bacchus Marsh got its first win of the season, beating Ballarat. The Cobras won convincingly on 21.13 (139)-4.9 (33). Tara Murray
Bears’ bravery earns victory after injuries A brave Burnside Heights has hung on against Westmeadows to return to the winners’ list in Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division. The Bears finished with just 16 players on the field, following two serious injuries, but stuck strong to beat the Tigers 4.5 (29)-3.2 (20). Bears coach Jeff Stevens said it had been a hard couple of weeks for the Bears, who faced Keilor the previous week. He praised the focus of the playing group, despite having two players leave the ground via ambulance. In the past two weeks, the Bears haven’t had a bench, while their opposition has. “It was a tough match, but it was really good to get the four points,” he said. “We had about 16 players left at the end of the game. “They came back at us towards the end. We were struggling towards the end of the game and the girls were all pretty tired.” Maria Afuhaamango kicked two goals for the Bears, while Ebony Stevens was their best. Jeff Stevens said he was pleased with how Tori Russell performed in her first game. He said they were still unsure how bad the injuries were to Brooke McKinley and Brittany Ward. McKinley, who entered the round the division’s leading goal scorer, hurt the knee she injured in the corresponding round last season. She was ruled out for the rest of that season. Stevens said McKinley’s knee was still too swollen to do scans. Ward suffered an ankle injury and appears to have torn some ligaments. Stevens said the side’s fighting spirit was impressing him. The Bears are second with a 4-1 record. “Everyone is still putting in,” he said. “Even against Keilor, we kept them goal-less in the last quarter and we were able to carry that into the next round.” The Bears will this week face Hillside, which is fifth on the ladder. The Sharks beat Strathmore 4.16 (40)-3.2 (20) on Saturday. “It’s going to be a struggle this week with less numbers and it’s going to be a tough game,” Stevens said. Tara Murray
