Try-out time a Melton hit Melton’s up-and-coming young musicians are being called on to showcase their talents at a new monthly open mic event. Running on the first Tuesday of each month at the Melton Amphitheatre, the event is open to performers aged 12 to 25. Melton council recreation and youth manager Troy Scoble said the initiative, launched in March, was proving very popular with young performers in the region. “It gives young people an opportunity to showcase the skills they’ve learnt,” Mr Scoble said. “Young people enjoy the freedom to create, collaborate and play music in a safe and social space. “We’re thrilled to give these talented emerging artists the chance to take their music to the stage.” Many of the performers take part in the council’s weekly Back to Basics program, at which young artists hone their skills. Mr Scoble said he hoped the event would continue to grow. “As the word gets out, we expect interest from both young people and the local community to grow,” he said. “The aim of this program is to help young people learn new skills, gain confidence and make new friendships.” Ewen McRae

MPs returned in Labor loss Local Labor MPs Brendan O’Connor and Catherine King have been returned to federal Parliament, but many of their election pledges lie in tatters following the Labor Party’s defeat. In the seat of Gorton, Mr O’Connor experienced a 2.56 per cent swing against him on a two-party preferred basis, but still claimed the seat with more than 65 per cent of the overall vote. More than 50 per cent of first-preference votes went to Mr O’Connor, while Liberal candidate Nathan Di Noia was the closest challenger with 25.56 per cent of first preferences. Mr O’Connor said it was a pleasing result personally, but with Labor set for another three
years in opposition, he said many local projects and services would be overlooked. “I’m very grateful of the overwhelming support that was extended to me in the electorate,” he said. “It was a difficult night for the party nationally, but the support locally for Labor was fantastic. “My great disappointment is for my constituents, who are going to wait longer for surgery or be out of pocket for cancer treatments … I worry for our local schools, who are going to have less resources as a result of the decisions made nationally, not by the electorate. “I don’t have a rich electorate and many people are doing it tough. It’s a great

community, but we need better services to help those that need it.” Mr O’Connor said all pre-election promises would now be reviewed, including funding commitments to several local sports clubs. “We’ll review all of our commitments, but obviously we made decisions to support them if we were to win,” he said. “Whilst we review decisions, they were well placed and are our priorities now will be up for affirmation, but right now every policy and commitment has to be reviewed. “Locally, Rockbank Football Club lose $1.8 million, Westside Strikers will lose $1 million, and Diggers Rest Football Club will lose $60,000 – all Labor commitments the Liberal government would not match.”
In the seat of Ballarat, Catherine King had a stellar night as she enjoyed a swing of 3.68 per cent to her on a two-party preferred basis. “It’s a real honour to be returned as the member for Ballarat and I want to thank the community for their support this weekend,” Ms King said. “We will now listen to what the electorates have said and try to hold this government to account. “Unfortunately, the Liberals didn’t match many of the promises that we made. “So now my task is to write to each of the ministers to lobby to get these projects up, particularly for Bacchus Marsh and Darley. The lack of recreation space and a hugely growing population is a big issue.” 12418738-DJ22-19 10070720-05

Property prices ‘holding up’ By Melissa Heagney/ Heagney/Domain Melbourne’s outermost suburbs are bucking the house price downturn, which has now spread to most of the city. While house prices in some of Melbourne’s most expensive suburbs have taken a dive over the past 12 months, suburbs within Melton and Moorabool have bucked the trend. According to the March Domain House Price Report, Brookfield, Bacchus Marsh, Kurunjang, Eynesbury, Burnside Heights and Truganina were all among the top 20 suburbs for median
house price rises in Melbourne. All those suburbs have experienced median price rises of between six and 10 per cent year-on-year. In the year to March, the suburb with the biggest decline was inner north-eastern Fairfield, where the median house price slipped 21.4 per cent to $1,122,500. Experts say first-home buyer incentives have helped buffer the fringes from median falls with buyers looking to purchase for less than $600,000 to qualify for stamp duty exemptions. Cheaper prices for houses in Melbourne’s west
were the main reason David Dickson and his partner Petra Foulds bought a three-bedroom home in Kurunjang, moving in a month ago. Kurunjang was in the top 10 suburbs to have house prices rise, with a median boost of 8.5 per cent to $439,500. Mr Dickson works as an aircraft engineer while Ms Foulds is a retail manager and their home is close to where both work. The home is a long-term investment allowing them to plan for the future – including starting a family. “We’re planning to be here for the next 10 to 15 years – maybe even longer,” Mr Dickson
said. Domain senior research analyst, Dr Nicola Powell, said while the outer western suburbs were holding up, the good run in median prices on the fringes may not last. “I think there is a delayed impact on these outer areas as the first-home buyers’ initiatives [stamp duty concessions] in Victoria have supported demand and growth but this will wear off over time,” Dr Powell said. “Especially since the tightening lending criteria is making it harder to get finance for a home.”

Green thumbs and garden fun The Melton Botanic Garden will be on full display this weekend. The garden, and the volunteers who look after it, are taking part in the national Botanic Garden Day celebrations, with fun and games for the whole family on May 26. Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden president John Bentley said it was the fourth year they had taken part, and it has quickly become one of their biggest events. “We want to encourage people to come down and explore their local botanic garden,” Mr Bentley said.
“It’s one of our most public events that we run. We do tours throughout the year, but this one brings together a number of community groups. “It’s a great place to relax and enjoy some passive recreation, and also a great place to see some wonderful collections of plants that are suitable for the Melton climate and suitable for suburban homes.” As well as the beautiful gardens to walk through, the day will feature plant sales, drink stands, the Greater Western Community Band, and children’s art activities.
The Bacchus Marsh Lions Club will also be running guided tours of the garden on a miniature train. Mr Bentley said encouraging more people to take advantage of the garden was one of the biggest focuses of the day, and they always get a good response from the local community. “It’s a wonderful experience to get involved at the garden, and everyone always says they feel like they’re contributing to the community and the environment.” Ewen McRae
Western Water is reminding residents to continue to conserve water despite recent rainfalls. Despite some big downpours in the past two weeks, Western Water said the long-term, below-average rainfalls have left reservoirs perilously low, and water conservation in winter was crucial. Western Water community relations general manager Graham Holt said the forecasts for winter rainfall were not strong. “While we’ve had some much-needed rain recently, the forecast over the coming months predicts below average rainfall,” Mr Holt said. The low rainfall is reflected in Merrimu Reservoir, which is at 26.4 per cent of its capacity. Merrimu Reservoir is the traditional water source for Bacchus Marsh and Melton, but water can be sourced or supplemented by the Melbourne water system when necessary. Currently, customers in Macedon Ranges are receiving water from the Melbourne supply system, while residents in Bacchus Marsh are supplied by Merrimu Reservoir. Despite low levels, Western Water says the water supply is secure and sufficient to meet residents’ needs, but customers are reminded that permanent water saving rules and Target 155 still apply. The Target 155 campaign is a voluntary water conservation program designed to encourage residents to restrict their water usage to 155 litres per person per day. Western Water data shows that during the past month customers used on average 220 litres per person per day. Ewen McRae

Students will take part in a nationwide online anti-bullying campaign. (Supplied)
Bullying fight goes online A nationwide online anti-bullying campaign will launch in Melton this week. The event, titled Project Rockit, will bring together more than 300 students from 15 Melton schools at Melton Christian College on May 21. The project is aimed at empowering students as digital ambassadors to tackle online hate and create positive social change. It is part of a national campaign supported by a $1 million investment from Facebook and Instagram. Project Rockit chief executive Lucy Thomas said it was about creating young leaders to influence online behaviour. “Our vision for a Project Rockit digital ambassador is to be a powerful source of leadership in the online world,” Ms Thomas
said. “Digital ambassadors recognise their power in the online world and use that power for good. “They use their unique strengths to stand up, challenge the status quo and reclaim technology as a tool for positivity.” The course aims to create 10,000 digital ambassadors in 600 schools by the end of 2020. A similar anti-bullying campaign has been running for several years, targeting bullying in schools. Facebook Australia’s policy director, Mia Garlick said expanding the message to the online space was a logical next step. Details: www.projectrockit.com.au. Ewen McRae
Victoria Police’s Ballarat Forensic Hub was opened last week. The hub is expected to have a significant impact across the western region, giving local police faster access to forensic services to assist in investigating crime and apprehending offenders more quickly. Previously, evidence requiring forensic analyses had to be sent to the Melbourne centre. The hub will house scientific equipment and specialist staff, trained to perform evidence recovery across a range of biological, chemical, digital, botanical and fingerprint specialties.

Sunset clause concerns By Benjamin Preiss/The Age Scott Parker believed he was making a safe investment when he paid a deposit on a block of land three years ago in Melbourne’s outer west. But earlier this month Mr Parker was stunned to receive a letter from the land developer’s lawyers enacting a clause in the contract to renegotiate the property price of $185,000, up from the original sum of $130,000. His contract for the land on The Millstone estate in Melton South contained a sunset clause allowing both parties to terminate the deal after three years, which has elapsed, if the plan for the subdivision had not been registered. But the letter said he could keep the property by accepting the higher price. “They’re trying to go for a quick cash grab,” Mr Parker said. He had already paid about $6000 as a deposit to developer Custodian Toolern Syndicate in 2016 and almost $10,000 in costs to a separate builder. New laws have been introduced to the Victorian Parliament to crack down on the use of sunset clauses, which have allowed developers to use delay tactics to exploit buyers. Those laws are yet to pass the Parliament’s upper house. Mr Parker has bought land in other property developments before although he no longer owns them. Yet he had never heard of sunset clauses before he received the letter from Custodian Toolern Syndicate. “The longest I’ve ever waited for a block of land was a year,” he said. “I just can’t see why they’d do that to people. We’ve been waiting three years. I’ve been renting. My life’s on hold.” Mr Parker said he knew of several other purchasers in a similar position, but he was not

sure how many had received similar letters. The new laws will be backdated to August last year. But sunset clauses will still be allowed with written consent from the buyer, or an order of the Supreme Court. Fears remain that land developers will still have the upper hand over purchasers if they try to pursue sunset clauses through the courts. The manager of the development, CFMG Land, defended the use of sunset clauses

because The Millstone had encountered “extremely costly, unforeseen and unavoidable delays in construction”. “This is not uncommon in recent years in the Melbourne market due to the high demand for property,” a company spokesman said. “On behalf of the investors, CFMG Land as the manager has a fiduciary duty to seek to mitigate against those costs to the best of our ability.” He said the company had acted in good faith.

Business bus rolls into town Small business operators in Melton will be able to access support and government business services when the Small Business Bus visits this week. The bus gives local residents access to business mentoring specialists who can provide advice in marketing, finance, human resources and sales. It will be at the Amphitheatre Precinct on May 21, from 10am until 4pm. Local MP Steve McGhie said it was a great opportunity for local small business owners to network, learn new skills, and find out ways to improve their business. “The Small Business Bus program is a great service for local businesses to have access to expert face-to-face advice anywhere in Victoria,” Mr McGhie said. “This program plays an important part in the commitment to providing Victorians with greater access to government support services to encourage business and jobs growth across the state.” In 2018, more than 1047 small businesses across Victoria accessed free on-board mentoring, while a further 2556 received assistance from information officers. Free mentoring sessions on board the bus are limited and bookings are essential. For more information or to book a session, visit business.vic.gov.au/ sbb or call Small Business Victoria on 13 22 15. All eyes on the alpacas Young bookworms are urged to visit Melton and Caroline Springs’ libraries this Wednesday to join in a national event. The special storytime will take place at the same time in libraries, schools, and kindergartens around Australia as part of Library and Information Week (May 22-26). The picture book Alpacas with Maracas, written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove, will be read for storytime. Songs, fun facts about alpacas, and a craft activity will follow at both Melton and Caroline Springs libraries. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the event would be a celebration of reading for children. “There is a real sense of community in
sharing the same book, at the same time with so many other people across the country,” Cr Turner said. “Events like this create a great feeling of fun around reading and promote literacy skills and imagination.” Last year, more than 1,062,230 people participated in National Simultaneous Storytime at more than 8255 locations. The annual event, now in its 19th year, kicks off at both libraries at 11am on May 22. Melton library is located at 31 McKenzie Street, Melton, and the Caroline Springs library is at 193 Caroline Springs Boulevard, Caroline Springs. Ewen McRae

Head start for apprenticeships By Ewen McRae Four Melton schools will be among the first in the state to experience a new initiative aimed at better preparing students for future apprenticeships. The Head Start initiative helps students thinking about undertaking an apprenticeship to start working towards that while still completing their VCE or VCAL studies. The initiative will launch at Melton Secondary College, Melton Specialist School, Staughton College and Kurunjang Secondary College.
‘‘
Students are supported to get a great education
’’
- Steve McGhie
The program means students can stay at school an extra year to finish their VCAL or VCE and their apprenticeships while spending more time doing paid, on-the-job training. Local MP Steve McGhie said keeping students in school for as long as possible, while giving them more options for their futures, was
a positive for the region. “The Education State is making sure all students are supported to get a great education, stay in school and learn the skills they need for the future,” Mr McGhie said. “This fantastic initiative will give more students across the state the support and skills they need to succeed in their chosen career and in life.” Schools will get additional support and funding to help run Head Start, including a school-based Head Start co-ordinator to help deliver the initiative, providing employment and vocational pathway advice and one-on-one
support to students. The 2018-19 state budget provided $49.8 million to deliver Head Start, alongside $109 million to overhaul secondary school career education and $26 million to enhance vocational education in schools. The Head Start initiative will provide apprenticeships targeted at priority industries and traditional trades such as construction, defence and health. Enterprise apprenticeships and traineeships will be developed to target high technology areas needed for high demand future jobs, such as coding in the information technology field.
Capturing cultures Hopetoun Park’s Wayne Quilliam is closing in on his 300th exhibition, but he’s still finding new ways to inspire and spark conversations. The veteran photographer will showcase his latest works at the opening of the new aMBUSH Gallery in Canberra this week, which will bring together contemporary indigenous artists for the While You Were Sleeping exhibition. Since joining the navy in his late-teens, Quilliam has been fascinated with capturing culture in his photography, and his own take on indigenous cultures across Australia has become his life’s passion. “I was amazed at the people and places around the world and wanted to capture the essence of culture and what that looked like in different places,” he said. “As I go out on country as an aboriginal man, the first thing I do is ask the people who’s land you’re on whether you can capture their land,
and that then influences how you photograph it and how you tell the story of that land. “My influence comes from the land and the textures … everything from the bark on the trees to the rivers and the mountains, so I hope people come away from the exhibition with a different perspective on the indigenous people and our art.” With shows later in the year in Geneva, New York and Amsterdam, as well as all over Australia, Quilliam said he wanted to change the perceptions about what indigenous art is. “Here in Australia I can have a show, and the discussions can be very simplified,” he said. “It’s not seen as indigenous art sometimes, whereas when I go overseas there is incredible dialogue in how they perceive it, but they understand that it is indigenous art.” Ewen McRae

Hospital tops budget wish list By Ewen McRae A hospital business case and more funding to deal with rapid growth are at the top of Melton council’s wish list ahead of the upcoming state budget. The 2019-20 state budget will be handed down on May 27, and Melton mayor Bob Turner said the council expected the government to honour its pre-election commitment for a business case on the long awaited Melton Hospital. “This budget is set to make a great difference to the City of Melton if pre-election
commitments are delivered,” Cr Turner said. “It is our clear expectation that the state government will deliver on this promise and bring a new hospital closer to reality. “Our residents deserve improved health outcomes and this funding is the first step towards more accessible, quality health care in the City of Melton.” Council is also calling on the government to purchase land in Cobblebank for the new hospital, and for construction to begin by July 2022. The council said the rapid population
growth across the municipality needed to be recognised in the budget, with more funding needed for services and infrastructure. “The City of Melton is among the fastest growing municipalities in Australia and without further investment our residents risk being left behind with limited access to essential health services, long commutes to work and school, and high transport costs,” Cr Turner said. “Melton City Council has advocated the state government to fund the city’s top priorities so that health, schools, roads and public transport
access align with growth projections and improve liveability for residents. “We desperately need a continued Growing Suburbs Fund provision that will ensure … Melton’s rapidly growing communities don’t miss out on vital services and infrastructure.” Better funding for education, as well as the ongoing campaign to upgrade the Western Freeway, were also high on council’s budget wish list. Four new primary schools were promised by the Labor Party prior to its win in last year’s state election.
New u-turn for youth Melton council has received a $200,000 grant to help it continue tackling youth crime and help young people reconnect with their communities. The council’s UTURN193 program has been chosen for a Youth Crime Prevention Grant, with Melton MP Steve McGhie saying it had a strong record of success. The program is aimed at vulnerable culturally and linguistically diverse young people aged 10 to 24 who have had contact with the criminal justice system. “Melton young people can continue to access services to help empower them to fulfil their potential and contribute to our community,” Mr McGhie said. “Together we can make Melton a safer and happier place to live.” The program provides youth project officers for one-on-one case management alongside access to therapeutic wilderness and recreational activities, including sport,
outdoor adventures and participation in the arts. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the program was delivering positive outcomes for the local community. “This program is making a big difference to a number of young people and it’s wonderful to see this recognised and supported by the state government,” he said. “Even more young people in the City of Melton will be able get the help they need to turn their lives around through this program. “Empowering young people to make better choices has a positive impact on the wider community. “The project partners play a critical role in addressing the needs of vulnerable young people and helping to keep them out of the criminal justice system.” Ewen McRae

MY PLACE Collette Glare is the secretary of the Melton South Community House. She spoke with Ewen McRae. What sort of activities does the house offer the Melton community? Do you have a favourite?
I have lived in Melton my entire life.
I like the area as it is, but a new hospital is really needed the most. It will become a major issue, I believe, as the town’s growth continues. I know many people would also like an electrified train service.
The Melton South Community Centre is a not for profit centre that offers a wide range of classes and services. There are accredited and non accredited courses, support groups, knitting group, community-based help services such as the food bank. People can book into courses for first aid, computers, bookkeeping, yoga, tarot, cooking, floristry, jewellery making and much more. Course pamphlets are delivered around Melton before the start of each term. Alternatively, check out the website or contact the centre directly. I personally love the tarot, reading angel cards and yoga courses. I have attended them for a long time. There has been a great range of mind, body, soul workshops. I love the tutors so I keep coming back.
Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in the area?
What has been some of the highlights from your time at the centre?
I like to go to Schnitz and, when I feel like Asian, Red Lantern to eat. I also go to Mrs Fields for a quick lunch, I have a toastie.
There have been a lot of highlights over the years. Apart from being the secretary, I went to a jewellery making class, years ago, which led me into teaching beading for a long time. I did a Connecting with Angels course and it changed the total direction of my life. I now have my own spiritual business called The Spiral Path.
What do you like best about the area? I like the open spaces. It still has a small-town feel, in a lot of respects, but the services offered are good. Melton is also convenient now to Melbourne, not like when I was growing up here. I also have really great friends, which is important. What could make the area better?
Can you tell me about your work at the Melton South Community House? How did you become involved? I had done many courses over the years. My mum is on the committee of management and a position became available. So I took up the nomination and was elected. I had done volunteer work for them previously. After a couple of years I was elected to the secretary position, which I enjoy immensely.
What would people be surprised to know about you? (Shawn Smits)
What is your connection to Melton?

National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week will be held from 27 May – 3 June. This year’s theme of ‘Grounded in truth, walk together with courage’, asks us to reflect on the truth of the past, no matter how confronting that may be. In order to better understand local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, everyone is invited to a series of events being held as part of Reconciliation Week celebrations. A Flag Raising Ceremony at the Melton Civic Centre, 232 High Street, Melton, will take place on Monday 27 May from 1pm, while a guided walk through the Melton Botanic Garden to explore local Indigenous plants is planned for Friday 31 May from 10am to midday. At CS Gallery, a digital works exhibition by Wayne Quilliam will be showing until Wednesday 19 June. Titled ‘Djiwarr’, it explores the body’s relationship to land and culture. All events are free to attend and bookings are not required. For more information visit melton.vic.gov.au
Mayor’s Message
Cr Bob Turner I’m very proud of our welcoming community, so it saddens me when I see illegal dumping on our reserves, roads and waterways. Our City is something to be respected, which is why Council takes a firm stance against illegal dumping, and on prosecuting individuals and businesses who treat our municipality like their personal rubbish bins.
Melton Weir. Council officers patrolling the area obtained details of the vehicle used in the dumping and conducted an investigation in partnership with VicRoads. The owner of the vehicle was given the opportunity to explain his actions but failed to cooperate. The matter was then referred to the Sunshine Magistrates Court, where the offender was fined $10,000 plus costs of $852, with conviction.
We’ve recently had some great success with reducing illegal dumping, due in no small part to the efforts of our Amenity Protection team. They’ve conducted blitzes, undertaken surveillance and investigation, and developed a community education program. They’ve targeted dumping hotspots worked with builders and developers, and have implemented a “dob in a dumper campaign”, all with great results.
To say we are thrilled with this outcome is an understatement. It sends a clear message that dumping is damaging our community, and that Council not only has the capacity, but will absolutely prosecute offenders.
One such result was the recent case of two men caught dumping rubbish at

Cr Ken Hardy In a dynamic, fast-growing municipality like the City of Melton, the importance of a well-connected, safe and reliable roads and public transport network, cannot be underestimated. Which is why Council continues to deliver and advocate for the infrastructure required to meet the needs of our community. Council has long prioritised transport infrastructure as a key driver in sustaining residential and economic growth across our City; a priority characterised by our continued advocacy efforts for the construction of an interchange at Bulmans Road. This upgrade would have a significant impact on our local transport infrastructure, in particular Brooklyn and Clarkes Roads, which are integral to our current network, but will become increasingly important when the
Bulmans Road interchange is constructed. Council will undertake a road corridor study of Brooklyn and Clarkes Roads to identify not only what improvements to infrastructure will be required, but also the timing of these works. Being able to move easily throughout our municipality, whether by road, public transport, or one of our many mixed-use paths, should be a safe and pleasant experience for everyone. That’s why the intersection of Station and Brooklyn Roads, Melton South, has been earmarked for the installation of traffic signals that will alleviate the congestion that occurs at the roundabout when the adjacent railway crossing is in operation. This critical project is currently in design stages and is awaiting funding as part of Council’s future capital works program. Feel free to call me on 0437 226 887 or email ken.hardy@melton.vic.gov.au

Melton Council has completed a list of purchases and works totalling $1.97 million to be completed as part of the satellite city concept plan.
The Melton railway line will not be electrified for at least the next five years and, says Chairman of the Melton Transport Association Cr Jim McElroy, it could be as far away as 25-30 years.
Campaigners have won their fight for improved safety at the Melton Highway railway crossing in Sydenham with the State Government last week announcing a $4 million upgrade.
Melton ratepayers will be hit with a 5 per cent rate rise in 2019-10, the council’s draft budget papers released last night show. The council report describes it as a “modest” rate rise.

Heathdale begins new chapter W
ith more than 36 years’ experience guiding students through the secondary years in Werribee, Heathdale Christian College is about to start the journey all over again. Next year, the college’s Melton campus will be launching its secondary school, with its first year 7 class. Melton principal Yvonne Harvey says Heathdale has been growing its primary school during the past five years, on the redeveloped site where Mowbray College once stood.

“Heathdale’s move into secondary education was deliberately planned to roll out once the primary school was well established. For Heathdale, that meant ensuring its culture of helping students discover their God-given potential ran strong at Melton,” Ms Harvey says. “We really want it to be the school of choice in the west, an aspirational place for students wanting a great education and to be fully equipped for the next stage in their life. “It’s an exciting time as the staff prepare the way for year 7. A new STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics] centre will help students combine these disciplines to find community and global solutions to current issues. “We’ll be providing college-owned one-to-one devices to enhance secondary student in-class learning, and rolling out an

initiatives, and what really makes them valuable, is our staff. They’re people who see students as individual gifts from God; young lives that have emotional, social, physical, intellectual, and spiritual needs. “Everything about Heathdale speaks of our desire to cater to the whole child, not only

Horror results for Melton By Tara Murray
The Essendon District Football League has taken responsibility for errors in the allocation of player point values to East Keilor players this season. In a statement on the EDFL website, the league said it had conducted a thorough review of the player point values, after concerns were raised about the points of several players. The Cougars have been found to have played over the player points cap of 47 in three of their games, with several players allocated the wrong playing points. Errors in the initial validation of East Keilor’s player point values caused the mistakes according to the statement. “The East Keilor Football Club submitted their playing list for validation at the appropriate time during the pre-season and the EDFL had sent back its validation assessment, which the club was entitled to take as advice from the league,” the statement said. “As a result of this re-assessment and correction of player point values, the total team point values for three matches already completed now shows as being above 47 points. “This is not considered to be a breach of the Player Point Policy by East Keilor. “The EDFL accepts responsibility for this, as at the time of these matches being played, East Keilor FC believed that it was listing players within the total team point cap of 47 points as a result of advice from the EDFL on PPV allocations.”

Melton Thoroughbreds skipper Chris Johnson. (Shawn Smits)
12321532-HM36-16
It was a tough weekend all-round for Melton Thoroughbreds in the Big V competition. The Thoroughbreds’ three sides played four games between them but did not win any. The men’s division 2 side proved no match for the Pakenham Warriors. The Warriors won the first three quarters to open up a match-winning, 27-point lead heading into the final break. The Thoroughbreds showed some respectability in the final quarter, winning it by one point, but it was too little, too late in the 101-75 loss. Wol Wol Ngong top scored with 14 points off the bench and Chris Johnson scored 13. The loss ends a three-game winning streak for the Thoroughbreds, who now sit 6-5. In women’s division 2, it was an up and down game for the Thoroughbreds. They had a fast start to lead by seven points at quarter-time, but 10 minutes later they were down two points at the main break. The Warriors continued their momentum in the second half, outscoring the Thoroughbreds in both quarters, to win 87-76. Jenna Conroy top scored with 17 points, while the Procak sisters, Allanna and Stacey, also scored double figures. The loss leaves the Thoroughbreds with a 4-5 record. The youth league men’s side lost two games. The Thoroughbreds faced the Warriors in their first game and were left to rue a poor first quarter, which saw them down by 16 points. The Thoroughbreds worked hard to reduce the margin to six points at the last break, but ran out of steam, losing 96-82. On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds lost to the Collingwood All Stars 85-77.

SPORT Riddell district hangs on for a thrilling one-goal win
Rebecca Hicks takes a strong catch in the circle for the RDNL. (Shawn Smits)
The Riddell District Netball League hung on to claim victory against the Southern Netball League in the AFL Victoria WorkSafe Community Championships. In a match that could have gone either way, the RDNL came up with some strong late plays to seal the 41-40 win. Neither side could gain control of the match, with scores level at both quarter and half-time. It was just a one goal margin at the final change. In its best period of the game, the RDNL got the margin out to three goals in the last quarter and looked like it might run away with it. But Southern came again and the RDNL had a couple of nervous moments. The scores were back to level. The RDNL steadied at the attacking end and Lauren Close pulled down a couple of strong rebounds in defence to seal a win. RDNL coach Chris Cameron was pleased with how the side had come together. “We only had two sessions and played a tournament together,” he said.
“To get the full squad on court was amazing. It took us the first quarter to settle into what they [Southern] were doing. They were playing a really tight one-on-one defensive game and we had to adapt and try and make some changes. “We are really adaptable and to basically change the team at half-time and know the girls are resilient and could get on and get the job done was amazing.” Cameron said the plan pre-game was to bring players off the bench at half-time and give everyone an opportunity on court. He said with the depth in the side they were confident everyone could do the job needed. Lauren Close, Stefanie Symes, Kirby Elliott and Chloe Meulenmeesters all came onto the court and had an influence. With the game on the line, Cameron made a couple of key changes in the final quarter which had a massive impact. The first was moving Symes in wing defence at three-quarter time. The other was bringing
RDFL wins in extra time By Tara Murray The Riddell District Football League pulled off a remarkable extra time win, against the Southern Football League, to claim its third straight AFL Victoria WorkSafe Community Championships. The RDFL trailed by 19 points late in the game before kicking three goals to level the scores and send the match into extra time. Southern kicked the opening goal of extra time and had a shot after the siren of the first five minute period, but missed. The RDFL then kicked the next two goals to take the lead. Both teams had shots on goal late, but the RDFL held on to win, 12.12 (84)-11.15 (81). RDFL coach Ben Tankard said they threw caution to the wind late in the game and it paid off. Tankard said for most of the day Southern had the better of them, but weren’t able to put them away. He said his side continued to pressure the opposition and it paid off. “Half way through the last quarter I thought we were pretty much cooked, so we really rolled the dice,” he said. “Southern put a player behind the ball … We got our loose defender to run through at the stoppages and encouraged the defenders to leave their man and not really worry about how much we lose by and really go for it. “We got a bit lucky with a couple of ugly inside 50s and got a bit of momentum and scored a couple really quickly. “Again at half-time of extra time, they left the door ajar. “I thought our guys just on pure endeavour and bravery stood up.” Adding to the drama, the scoreboard was wrong for much of the final quarter. At the final siren, it had a one-point win to Southern. Tankard said they knew on the bench that the scoreboard was wrong and scores were level, but the players on the field didn’t realise. “We knew it was a draw, so we celebrated pretty hard when we kicked that goal,” he said. “We were going for the extra time. Unfortunately the crowd didn’t know, but it added to the drama.” Mitch Jensen kicked four goals for the RDFL, while Dylan Weir kicked three goals. Matt Pannuccio was awarded the RDFL’s best on ground medal by the umpires. Tankard said he thought they had one clear standout. “I thought Dan Toman was a pretty clear best on ground,” he said. “You can see the pride in
RDFL’s Dean Putt looks to get a handball out. (Shawn Smits)
him, Brent Swallow and Tommy Waters, our leadership group. They really care about these games and want to represent the league.” Tankard said Mitch Jensen, Dylan Tarczon
and Pannuccio all had good games as well. In the under-19s, the RDFL hung on to beat Southern 8.7 (55)-7.7 (49). Jordan Watkins was named the RDFL’s best.
Rebecca Hicks into the game in the dying moments. “I identified at three-quarter time that their wing attack was the main ball carrier,” Cameron said. “It was a good decision [to move Symes]. And bringing Bec on in the last couple of minutes, I think that saved the game.” Hicks, who played three and half quarters in goal shooter, was named the RDNL’s best player by the umpires. Cameron, who coaches Wallan, said having played a tournament together earlier in the year had helped the side. They will also play in the association championships later this year. He said he was thrilled with how the program had come together this year. “I feel we have a lot of players from different teams as well, which is good for the league, having a good balance. “Seeing the depth coming through especially in the A-grade and under-19s it’s amazing.” Tara Murray
Poor start costly for BFL Saturday was a day to forget for the Ballarat Football League interleague side. The BFL team was left to rue missed opportunities and poor execution, as they faced a slicker and cleaner Hampden Football League side in the AFL Victoria WorkSafe Community Cup. Goalless in the first quarter, the BFL was left chasing its tail all day, eventually losing 20.15 (135)-8.13 (61). BFL coach Chris Stuhldreier said everything went wrong right from the start. “We missed opportunities early to hit the scoreboard,” he said. “We turned the ball over and they were good by foot and able to hit the scoreboard. “They were very clean and once they had the momentum it was hard to stop.” Stuhldreier said they had periods of dominance but weren’t able to make the most of it. He said had they been able to do that, especially in the third quarter when they kicked 3.12, the game could have been a lot closer. “They were able to go forward and kick a late goal which stifled our momentum. “We had still been hoping to come over the top of them in the last quarter, we thought they had run out of steam.” Jordan Johnston and Aaron Willitts kicked two goals each for the BFL. Grant Valles was awarded the BFL’s best player medal by the umpires. Stuhldreier said it was hard to find a clear winner for the side. “We didn’t have any standouts,” he said. “The back line was under pressure all day and performed reasonably well.” The loss is the BFL’s second in a row and could see it slip outside the top 10 ranked leagues in the state. Stuhldreier said every league goes through a cycle where they struggle in the competition. He said they needed to address it and turn things around. In the open netball, Hampden beat the BNL 55-44. Kirsty Walsh was best on court for the BNL. Tara Murray 25 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 21, 2019

Phoenix switches it up in search of form reversal Melton Phoenix is back on the win list thanks to a much-improved performance in FFV state league 5 west, downing Ballarat 3-0. Having not notched up a victory since round three, the Phoenix players were keen to turn their form around. Phoenix coach Mark Parnis said a couple of little changes paid off. He said they had been able to dominate some games in recent weeks, but had been unable to convert on the scoreboard. “We changed the approach a little bit in the last couple of weeks,” Parnis said. “We didn’t really change the structures. “We changed the personnel. We gave some of the younger players a rest, as we didn’t want to destroy them.
“It took a few weeks for the senior players to get some fitness. The depth in the club is starting to show.” Parnis was thrilled with how the side played for most of the match against Ballarat. He said the players were switched on from the start and it showed. “They were determined to get the three points,” he said. “We were good with the ball and didn’t waste too many opportunities. “We switched the ball quite well and took the game to Ballarat and they didn’t deal with it. “There were 15 to 20 minutes in the second half we dropped off and were lucky not to concede. We got a third goal in the last 10 to 15 minutes.”
Parnis said it was good for the strikers to get on the scoresheet, with the three goals the most by the side in a game this season. He said the further the game went, the more their confidence grew. “Once we scored the first goal, you could see the weight lifted off their shoulders,” he said. “After the second goal, they looked more comfortable and the third goal capped it off.” Zachary Busuttil, Michael Kapiris and Sergio Tapia were the goalscorers for Phoenix. The win moves the Phoenix to eighth with a 3-1-4 record. The Phoenix faces a couple of big weeks before the Queen’s Birthday weekend bye – it will play 11th-placed Maribyrnong Greens, before taking on second-placed Keilor Wolves.
Bears roar into new year By Tara Murray Burnside Heights could not have imagined how well they would start the Essendon District Football League division 2 season. While the Bears were expecting to be big improvers this season, a 5-0 start to the year was not on the radar. They are on track for their best ever season, beating last year when they won seven games. Bears president Justin Peagram said they were thrilled. “It’s beyond what we had hoped for,” he said. “We’re ahead of schedule. “We’ve played a few of the top teams and taken the challenge to play some good football. “We had hoped to be 4-1. “We’ve set the challenge high and now we have to maintain it. It’s a long season.” Peagram said one of the biggest differences this year was the extra depth in the squad. While they didn’t go out and recruit stars, they recruited players to play certain roles. “We didn’t have depth last year, it makes a big difference. “It’s benefited guys who played last year. “It’s released Adam Sullivan and Jordan Hughes. It’s given them extra support and has allowed them to take the bull by the horns.” After some big challenges in recent weeks, the Bears had a big win against Keilor Park 34.14 (218)-5.1 (31). The Bears focused on the smaller things going into the match. “It wasn’t about the score, it was about playing to a structure,” Peagram said. “We know that it can get messy in these games. “For three quarters we stuck to the structures.” Anthony Fawcus was the standout, kicking 15 goals. His efforts meant for a rare occasion league leading goalkicker Josh Covelli had to play second fiddle – not that he didn’t play his role, kicking eight goals himself. Peagram said it was good to have so many options up forward. The Bears’ biggest test so far will come this weekend against the undefeated Sunbury Kangaroos. “[Coach] Aidan [Stott] has gone and watched them a couple of times and they are the benchmark,” Peagram said. “They are strong across the board. We’ll likely have a couple out. “It’ll be a good test to see where we are at.” It will be a big day for the Bears, with the club wearing a special guernsey in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. And as well as the three men’s teams all playing the Kangaroos, their women’s sides will play before the seniors game. It was another hard-fought win for the Bears women’s side in premier division. The Bears managed to hold off a fast-finishing Hillside, winning 5.3 (33)-4.7 (31). Kayla Ravanello kicked three goals in the win for the Bears. Anthony Fawcus had a day out up forward kicking 15 goals. (Luke Hemer) 26 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 21, 2019
“We want to try and take some points off Maribyrnong Greens and Keilor is the benchmark,” Parnis. “We’re happy to take them on. We will really have to be on our game.” In state league 4 west, Westside Strikers had a big night against Laverton. The 6-0 win, the Strikers’ third of the season, has them sitting in fourth. Spring Hills slipped further down the ladder after a 3-1 loss to ladder leader Altona North. Mohamed Mohamed was the goalscorer for the Stallions. In state league 1 north-west, Caroline Springs George Cross lost 3-0 to Preston Lions. Tara Murray
Sports shorts AFL Goldfields
Melton Centrals won the first local derby with Melton in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition. Centrals had the better of their rivals for most of the day in the 8.8 (56)-2.1 (13) win. Bacchus Marsh got a much-needed win, beating Sebastopol, 4.9 (33)-1.3 (9). Kellie McKay kicked two goals for the winners and Abbey Bertram was named the best for a third time this season. It was a big week for the Cobras as Emily Crawford made her debut for Williamstown’s VFLW team. Darley lost to Redan, 22.17 (149)-3.2 (20).
VTCA
Sydenham-Hillside has announced a new coach and captain for next season’s Victorian Turf Cricket Association season. Coming off the division 4 premiership, the Storm is looking to strengthen its squad as it goes up a division. West Indian Alston Bobb will join the club next season as coach. Bobb brings a significant amount of first class playing experience to the side. Ben Green, who was a standout with the bat for the Storm in the premiership season, will captain the side. Dane Currency, who captained the side last season, isn’t returning.
Hockey
It was a mixed weekend for Melton at the weekend. The Mustangs’ Vic League 2 women’s side had a 4-1 loss to the Gippsland Bulls, while their metro women’s side lost to Footscray 3-0. Rebecca Bonnici was best for the Mustangs in the metros. In under-10s, the Mustangs Maroon team lost 1-0 to Altona, while the Green team had a 2-2 draw against Werribee. In the girls’ competition, Melton beat Altona 4-0, while in the under-12 pennant match they lost to Brunswick. Meanwhile, Caroline Springs’ Vic League 2 women’s side had a 2-0 win against Casey.
WRFL
The Western Region Football League never had a semblance of control in its 42-point loss to Goulburn Valley Football League in the AFL Victoria Community Championship interleague clash on home soil at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Triton remains a light truck titan By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
AT A GLANCE
The Triton has carried the weight of Mitsubishi light truck expectations for more than 40 years, and with the model year ’19 range, there’s no sign of them being offloaded any time soon. As I write this the Triton lies in overall third spot on the vehicle sales charts in Australia. Mitsubishi Australia is keen to keep its place in a weakened vehicle market. The new Triton comes in three body styles – Dual Cab, taking in the function of a pick-up truck with the comfort of an SUV; Club Cab, skewed more to commercial use with double doors and space behind the front seats; and Single Cab, with the capacity for a long cargo tray and two seats resistant to dirt and hard wear. There is a choice of two engines – a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel and similar-size petrol engine. A new six-speed automatic transmission is now available on diesel models. Two and four-wheel drive systems are offered across the range. Prices start at $22,490 for the entry-level 4X2 GLX Single Cab Chassis 2.4-litre petrol manual, the 4x4 GLX Club Cab Chassis 2.4L diesel manual comes in at $35,490 and the 4x4 GLS Premium 2.4L Dual Cab Pick Up diesel auto tops off the range at $51,990. All are plus on-road costs. On test was the 4x4 GLX 2.4L Dual Cab Pick Up diesel auto, costing $39,990.
Styling
For the new Triton, Mitsubishi has taken a leaf out of the American pick-up truck book (Ram etc) and adapted it to the company’s Dynamic Shield concept. Chrome is used to emphasise the power and toughness of the vehicle, while bonnet height and high positioning of the lamps reinforce the imposing look. On a practical note, the headlamps and fog

to what it tells us is a higher level than rival pick-ups. It includes forward collision mitigation to detect vehicles and pedestrians ahead, while rear cross-traffic alert helps the driver check behind for other vehicles or pedestrians when reversing. Blind spot warning with lane change assist comes to the aid of the driver when changing lanes and ultrasonic miss-acceleration mitigation helps prevent accidental use of the accelerator when moving off or reversing.

Trays are provided at the bottom of the dash centre panel and there’s a USB charging socket in the floor console rear panel.
Infotainment
The colour liquid crystal Multi Information Display, situated conveniently on the central
dashboard, and a high-contrast meter cluster with higher definition dials than previously keep the driver in touch with systems and controls. The audio system uses a high-quality 7-inch touchscreen and is Bluetooth compatible. AM/ FM radio is available across all grades and DAB radio on GLX and GLS. All 7-inch models come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Safety
Mitsubishi Australia has upgraded safety
Driving
Mitsubishi has measured the fuel consumption at 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle. The test vehicle came closer to 10 litre per hundred.
Summing up
There’s no denying the Triton is trying to make up lost ground on rivals and while it seems safe at third place on the sales chart, it will need some canny selling to overhaul the two market leaders. The new seven-year warranty is a good start.
