Marathon effort

Bob Carey-Grieve looks back on 2016 with conflicting thoughts. While the Ballan man’s beloved Bulldogs lifted the AFL premiership cup, a night in November turned his life upside down. Waking early in the morning to find he couldn’t move his right arm or leg, what followed was nearly two years of medical tests and treatment to find a path back to health. “It was like waking from a nightmare, but I couldn’t remember it,” the father of two said. “I got out of bed, tried to walk and fell straight down. At that point I did think it was a stroke, but my face looked fine so I ruled that out. “I went to the hospital for assessment and tests, and the next day I was told I’d had two strokes at the same time. “The most difficult thing about that was they

couldn’t tell me why I’d had a stroke. My heart was fine, my blood pressure was fine, so no one could say what was wrong with me. “The anxiety and fear around not getting that answer to ‘why?’ was worse than the stroke itself.” Mr Carey-Grieve, 42 at the time, went through six months of treatments before a visit to a cardiologist at The Alfred Hospital revealed a 4mm hole in his heart. “I couldn’t really do anything for two months from there, because any stress could make the hole bigger,” he said.

“You exercise, or you get anxious, or you have a curry, and it could make it worse.” He had surgery to fix the hole in his heart, but was back in hospital just months later after his course of blood thinners led to a number of faintings. More tests soon revealed he had a tumor in his bowel. “I had to phone my wife in floods of tears, it was just before Christmas 2017,” he said. “On the first of February I had 30cm of bowel cut out, and a month later I came back for a meeting and they told me that of the 14 lymph nodes they took out, one showed signs that the cancer had spread.” Mr Carey-Grieve underwent six months of chemotherapy. Now in the clear, he is preparing to run a half marathon on July 29 to raise funds for the Stroke Foundation. The run will mark a year since he finished chemotherapy.

“People often say that I’ve had a run of bad luck, but slightly perversely I’ve been quite lucky,” he said. “Whilst the stroke was terrible, it was an indicator that there were other things wrong. We may never have found the tumor without it. “I decided that I’d had about a two-and-a-half year tangle with death, constantly stressed and in fear, and I needed a process to deal with that. “So I started off with early morning walks, just 20 yards at first, but I kept going and now I’ve got the target of the half marathon. “I now get up stupidly early, put on some heavy metal music and run off into the hills. I try to see the sunrise each day, and what a difference that makes to your entire outlook. “If you start every day with a sunrise, I guarantee you’re in a good mood. I’m so happy to be alive and well, and probably fitter than I’ve ever been.”

New councillor a voice for change By Ewen McRae The newest Melton councillor says she is looking forward to getting stuck into the business of helping the community. Yvonne Sebire was sworn in as councillor for the Coburn ward last week, filling the vacancy left by the resignation of Melissa De Santis last month. A countback of the results of the 2016 council election was held on June 12. Cr Sebire said the result came as a shock, but she was ready to step up to serve her community.

“I was surprised, but pleasantly surprised,” Cr Sebire said. “Shortly after that it was excitement. I’m excited that I can now contribute on a larger scale for the community. “I’ve been keeping up with the goings on at council, but one of the challenges now is to catch up on everything that council is already doing, and help to support all that.” Cr Sebire said improvements to public transport and increasing assistance for domestic violence survivors were high on her priority list, and the reason she initially ran for council.

“I wanted to help people, and I wanted to be part of creating change in the community,” she said. “I think public transport around Melton is a big concern, and also I’d like to look into a crisis centre for domestic violence. I think that would be very helpful for our vulnerable residents. “I’d also like to offer support and create more opportunities for business in Melton.” Melton mayor Bob Turner said the council welcomed its newest elected member. “We are pleased that Cr Sebire has accepted the opportunity to represent the community,” Cr Turner said.

Mel Oloamanu has marked herself as a future star of Australian netball. The Melton Secondary College 16-year-old has just returned from captaining the Australian under-16 team to a narrow loss in an international tournament, and the defender said the thrill of representing her country was still fresh. “It felt really good, it was such an amazing tournament and I just loved every bit of it,” she said. “Unfortunately we came second, losing to New Zealand by a goal in the final, but it was so much fun out on the court with those girls. “It was great to play for Australia, the crowds were just going nuts so the atmosphere on the court was amazing.” Oloamanu and the team had just a week of training in Darwin before the tournament, and Oloamanu said she felt the pressure.

Convicted brothers walk free By Melissa Iaria/The Age

Two brothers have been jailed over a fatal brawl at a Caroline Springs restaurant but have been freed immediately, given time already served. Sasa Jovic, 30, and Milan Jovic, 23, were released on June 11 after being sentenced in the Supreme Court. Milan Jovic was jailed for 18 months, with a minimum of nine months, while Sasa Jovic was jailed for 16 months with a minimum eight months. Both were initially charged with murder for the fatal stabbing of 31-year-old Deni Dimovski at Caroline Springs in September 2017. But a jury cleared them of the charge and instead convicted them of affray and aggravated burglary. The victim’s mother, Snezana Dimovska, who flew from Macedonia to hear the case, broke down in tears outside court. “They stabbed him for nothing – for nothing,” she said. “When’s my son going to see the sun? “When’s my house going to be happy? “I just have one son.” Justice Michael Croucher said on Tuesday both accused were of otherwise good character and had a strong chance of rehabilitation. The pair were released after serving almost two years in custody awaiting sentence. The men’s lawyers had argued the brothers had served enough jail time and should not be punished further. Another man, Milos Novakovic, will face a plea hearing in July after he was convicted of Mr Dimovski’s murder. Last year, brothers Stefan Obradovic and Daniel Obradovic, both in their 20s, and friend Stephen Motta, escaped conviction and were ordered to do unpaid community work over the affray.

Kurunjang’s Leigh Milvain is a keen motorcyclist – yet it is the Bicycle Network that is honouring him for his volunteer work over many years. The Bicycle Network, which organises events such as Around the Bay in a Day and the Great Victorian Bike Ride, recently added Mr Milvain to its honour board. For Mr Milvain, who has always enjoyed helping people, it’s been a long road since he first put his hand up to help out 12 years ago. “Bicycle Victoria, as it was known back then, were after motorcycle riders with first aid training to be motorcycle marshals for Around the Bay,” he said. “I was the first aid officer at work, I had a bike – so I thought, ‘Why not?’ “Recognition was never something I thought about, so this came as a shock – to be on the honour board. But it is nice to be acknowledged.” Mr Milvain was the first motorcycle marshal on the Great Victorian Bike Ride, leading the way for the bigger team that takes part these days. “I don’t particularly enjoy the first aid part, because I’ve seen some bad injuries over the years,” he said. “But being part of a team and helping out while riding around the state on the motorbike has been great fun.” Ewen McRae

By Ewen McRae Ballarat line commuters are being warned to plan for extended travel times, when trains stop running for two weeks as works at Rockbank station ramp up. The Ballarat line will shut down between June 24 and July 7 for a two-week work blitz across the line. Rockbank station will be out of service from July 8 and trains will not stop to drop off or pick up passengers until late August. The station’s existing platforms will be demolished, with two new, longer platforms to be constructed as part of a major rebuild.

Caroline Springs residents will soon find it easier to dispose of their e-waste. E-waste is one of the fastest-growing streams of waste worldwide, and covers everything from old mobile phones, computers, audio devices, and refrigerators. Officeworks in Caroline Springs is one of 42 sites across the state to receive funding to boost the amount of e-waste it can take, as the need to properly dispose of electronic items grows. From July 1, 2019, any item with a plug, battery or cord can no longer be placed in kerbside bins and instead must be deposited at a designated e-waste drop-off point.

Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced a $25.3 million funding boost last week to help keep up with demand. “We’re making sure Victorian households know how to dispose of e-waste properly and easily ahead of the e-waste to landfill ban,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. “It’s great to see businesses like Officeworks getting on board to ensure all Victorians have a convenient drop-off point. “E-waste contains valuable materials that we can recover and reuse, but if left in the wrong place, they can also harm the environment.” Ewen McRae

Camera rollout for Melton police By Ewen McRae Melton police officers have been equipped with body cameras as part of statewide rollout. Officers at Melton and Caroline Springs have been wearing the cameras since June 11 as the state government continues to introduce more than 11,000 cameras across Victoria. The cameras are worn on a police officer’s uniform and are used to record video and audio footage. Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said the cameras were a boost to police capabilities. “The introduction of body-worn cameras

is expected to deliver improved community safety, enhanced evidence gathering, increased police safety and accountability,” he said. “The initial pilot we conducted in April, 2018, showed us that camera usage policies, infrastructure and training for police had worked well and police were comfortable using the technology within their first one or two shifts. “Given the pleasing results of their function, along with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community, we are in the process of rolling the cameras out to more officers.

“We are pleased to be expanding the body-worn cameras to more officers, with the aim to have 11,000 general duties police and protective services officers equipped with one by 2020.” The cameras will initially be used by Melton general duties and highway patrol police officers of the rank of sergeant and below. Police Minister Lisa Neville, announcing the rollout in August last year, said the cameras were a vital tool. “They have already led to quicker results through the courts and we expect these benefits will continue,” she said.

Medal honour for top cop Inspector Kathy Rudkins has achieved a lot in her 35 years in policing. Last week the former Melton area commander was recognised in the Queens Birthday Honours. Inspector Rudkins was awarded the Australian Police Medal for her work across many years on the force,. She said she was pleased to be acknowledged with such a prestigious award. “I was very proud when I heard about it,” she said. “I feel like somebody’s recognised the work that I’ve done, and not many people get this award so it’s a real privilege to receive it. “It’s a team effort though, and this is recognition not just for myself but all the officers I’ve worked with and the good work we’ve done together.” The commendation for the award said Inspector Rudkins had demonstrated strong

leadership in the community, and was a person of high integrity within Victoria Police. Inspector Rudkins has held many roles during her career, but said she had very fond memories of her time in Melton. She was the Melton Area Commander from 2015 until earlier this year, when she moved to the Police Standards Committee. “I always wanted to help people, which is why I got into policing,” she said. “I’m very proud of the work we did with the African community in Melton, and the work we did in partnership with the council and local community groups. “It’s always challenging when you’re working with victims of crime, because you can’t change anything. But overall I loved my time in Melton, no two days were the same.” Ewen McRae

Shooting

Police are investigating a shooting in Hillside last week. Detectives say a man was shot at an address in Bellevue Boulevard about 9.40am on June 12. The 53-year-old Hillside man was taken to hospital with what is believed to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting is believed to be an isolated event. Police are also looking into whether the parties involved are known to one another. House fire

A Taylors Hill house was destroyed by fire on June 7. The occupants of the house were not home when the fire was reported shortly before 9am. Fire was visible through the roof of the single-storey brick veneer house at the time. It was extinguished in about 30 minutes by CFA and MFB firefighters. Six trucks and 30 firefighters fought the fire. Crews were also designated to protect neighbouring properties. Firefighters remained on scene for some time extinguishing hotspots.

Unemployment in Melton has hit an all time high, and a per capita evaluation shows it to be the worst hit town in the Western Region. Statistics for May, released by the Commonwealth Employment Service this week, show that another 62 residents have registered for work, taking the total unemployment to 377.

Within four days last week, five people died on roads in the Melton municipality and a Melton man was killed in a motorcycle accident in South Yarra in one of the worst weeks of road horror yet seen in this town.

An independent advisory panel went against the alignment option supported by the Melton council for the Deer Park Bypass when handing down its recommendation last week.

Angry Melton Shire landowners turned out in force on the steps of State Parliament last week and their message was clear: a $95,000-per-hectare tax when they sell their property is robbery.

Wedding planners win Five years after being launched, Melton’s One Big Day has been recognised as one of the state’s best in bridal. The business was last month named as the Victorian wedding hire business of the year at the Australian Bridal Industry Awards. Founder Tim Dall said it was great to get recognised by the wider industry. “It was a bit of a shock – we all just went along to see what it was all about, so to get the win was very exciting,” Mr Dall said. “I guess it means that our standards are up there as one of the best in the business and that we’re quite competitive in the industry. “It means all our hard work and the long hours … haven’t gone unnoticed.”

The business started in Mr Dall’s backyard, hiring out vintage and rustic items for weddings and events, but quickly grew and soon expanded into other areas. “It’s a family-owned business that’s grown out of a mutual love of planning events,” Mr Dall said. “There was a bit of niche in the market for something in our area. “It soon grew too big to run from home, so we’ve moved to a warehouse and now we need to expand again as it’s still growing. “We’ve got a lot of unique items …our clients love that we spend time getting to know them and helping them see their vision come alive.” Ewen McRae

Centrals focus on steady gains By Tara Murray Melton Centrals remain positive despite a loss to Wallan in the Riddell District Netball League. While the Centrals lost by 16 goals, they won the second half by a goal in the 57-42 game. Centrals coach Randy Pereira said the second half showed their potential. “It is a bit tough having to play against teams that have a couple of VNL [Victorian Netball League] players,” he said. “We don’t want to go down that path. We were down by 11 goals at quarter-time and then lost by 15 goals. “That was a really good effort from the girls.” Pereira said the difference in the second half was the side backing themselves in a bit more. He said Ashlea Hyatt and Abbey Grant have been their most consistent players this season. Centrals sit 10th with one win so far. They are three games outside the top six. Pereira knows it will be a tough ask for them to make finals, but he said they were focused on the future.

“I could go and get some VNL players, but that defeats the purpose,” he said. “We may have some short-term pain, but hopefully we can keep some good ones together.” Pereira highlighted 16-year-old Eden Mitchell as one young player to watch, while they have several 14 and 15 year olds in their under-19 team. Pereira said he was hoping they could play how they did in the second half on Saturday for the rest of the season. Centrals this week face Riddell. “If we can play instinctively and enjoy ourselves we’ll be happy,” he said. “The second half needs to be repeated. It was a really good effort.” Centrals’ other sides had mixed results. Their under-19s put in a brave performance, while their B-grade side had a big win. The C-grade side had to settle for a draw. In other A-grade matches, Rockbank slipped further away from the top six after losing to Riddell. The Rams lead by one goal at the main break, however after half-time, the Bombers shot 33-19, to win 58-45. Macedon, Woodend-Hesket and Rupertswood were the other winners. In the football, Centrals fell just short against Wallan. Centrals were in the game for three quarters, before Wallan kicked away to win, 14.14 (98)-9.12 (66). It was a tough day out for Rockbank which lost to Riddell, 57.24 (366)-3.1 (19).

SPORT Stallions’ policy of promoting within pays dividends Spring Hills Football Club’s women’s program continues to fly high, with a number of teams pressing for titles half way through the season. Hard work has had its own reward with a number of talented players coming to the fore. The Stallions’ top side, their state league 2 north-west team, is undefeated and is going for a second straight title. The side’s last loss came in August 2017, when they were in state league 3 west. The Stallions’ second side, this year in state league 3 west, is also undefeated, as are their under-18s girls and their top under-16 and top under-14 girls teams. Stallions’ technical director Tom Markovski said they were thrilled with development of

their female program, which starts at under-7s. He said they were not surprised by the results of their state league 2 side, despite it being their first season at that level. They had a 12-0 win against Yarra Jets on Friday night. “I said a couple of years ago that we had a side that was of state league 1 standard,” Markovski said. “I expected us to be on top and expect to win the league. “We have players who are of an NPL standard. The idea this season is to have both [women’s] teams promoted.” While the Stallions are focused on getting promoted, they also have one eye on developing players coming through.

Markovski said the club was keen to make sure they were giving local players opportunities. “We’ve had the opportunity to play some of our under-18s in both the state league 2 and 3 teams,” he said. “The under-18s are on top and have scored 91 goals in eight games. “Each week a couple will go into state league 2 and a couple in state league 3. Then some 16s will come up into the under-18s and under-14s into the under-16s.” Markovski said those stepping up into the open sides were having an impact too. Imogen Stojanovski, who has scored 27 goals in the under-18s, has also scored in both women’s sides.

Thoroughbreds dig deep By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds have held their nerve late to notch up a fighting victory over the Mornington Breakers in Big V women’s division 2 basketball. After a good start, the Thoroughbreds saw their lead shrink in the second half. Having been in that situation before, they were keen to ensure victory didn’t slip away, successfully digging in for a 50-48 win. Thoroughbreds coach Lauren Olcorn was proud of the spirit on show. “To fight out the game like that, you needed a four full-quarter effort,” she said. “It was one of those games we had to fight hard for. The first quarter was the key for us. “In the other quarters we had different options that we should have taken, but didn’t. We managed to hold on to the lead.” Olcorn said that having been in a similarly challenging situation earlier in the season, they had worked hard on what tactics to use. “It’s something that we have to keep working on,” she said. “We don’t want to get into positions which are two-point games. “We’ll push forward and make the right decisions as a team.” On a tough shooting night, both sides scored at 27 per cent and less than that from beyond the arc. Olcorn said that was down to defensive pressure put on by both sides. She said the Thoroughbreds had shot well in the first quarter before the pressure was increased. Stacey Procak top scored for the Thoroughbreds with 11 points. The victory, the Thoroughbreds’ sixth, once again gives them an even ledger for the season. They remain sixth, with eight of the 10 teams still in finals contention. Olcorn said finals were still clearly the goal. “We’ll be pushing for the top four,” she said. “There’s three or four teams that are level on games and pushing for the top four. “The likes of Coburg and Wallan we still have to play again …two teams we can beat.” The Thoroughbreds this week will face second-placed Melbourne University Black Angels at home. The Thoroughbreds won the season’s first encounter between the teams. The Thoroughbreds’ men’s side lost a thriller on the road to Mildura Heat. With just seven players making the trip, it was always going to be difficult for the Thoroughbreds. When import Chris Johnson was in foul trouble early, it was looking even tougher. Despite that, Melton earned itself a nine-point lead at half-time. But then the Thoroughbreds ran out of legs

Markovski said all the work they are doing with the program was about reaching an even bigger goal, having an NPLW women’s side. Markovski said Football Federation Victoria has proposed the year 2021 as an opportunity to expand the NPLW. “That’s the club ambition,” he said. “A lot of girls could step up into the NPL. “We want to continue to develop from within.” Meanwhile, the Stallions men’s FFV state league 4 west team lost 2-0 to Golden Plains. Melton’s two Vic League sides had a tough time of it on Saturday. The Vic League 2 women’s side lost 5-0 to Casey. Rachel Iousua was the Mustangs’ best. The men’s Vic League 3 side lost 3-1 to St Bernards. Riley Lawrence was the goalscorer for the Mustangs, with Darren MacKenzie named their best. Melton’s metro women’s side lost to Sunshine 9-0, while the men’s pennant side won 2-1 against Footscray.

Melton South has gained ground against Bacchus Marsh in the fight for a finals spot in the Ballarat Netball League. In their weekend match-up, the Panthers blew the game open in the second quarter before the Cobras responded in the third. The Panthers, though, had one last run in them. It propelled them to a 51-36 win. Rata Hunia scored 36 goals for the Panthers. The Panthers are percentage behind the sixth-placed Cobras. Melton also has 16 points following a 59-45 loss to Lake Wendouree. After leading by three goals at quarter-time, the Bloods struggled to match the Lakers.

WRFL

Caroline Springs proved no match for Werribee Districts in Western Region Football League division 1. The Tigers led throughout, extending their advantage as the game went on for an 18.11 (119)-6.5 (41) finish. Stephen Brewer was the Lakers’ best. The Lakers’ women’s team had a better day in the form of a big win 11.5 (71)-1.4 (10) against Yarraville Seddon Eagles.

Hillside slides further behind By Tara Murray Hillside’s task to make the Essendon District Football League division 1 finals has just become a lot harder. A win on Saturday against Craigieburn would have put the Sharks level on points with the Eagles, but a loss would leave them two games outside the top four midway through the season. The Sharks suffered a loss on the back of a fast start by the Eagles. The Eagles had 10 scoring shots in the first quarter for a 41-point lead at the first break. The Sharks were able to slow the Eagles down after that, but were unable to eat in to the margin in the second quarter. The Eagles extended the margin in the second half to eventually win 21.7 (133)-9.14 (68). Sharks football manager Darren Mantynen said their starts had been a problem. “We were definitely expecting to perform a lot better,” he said. “It’s a habit we’ve got into. We did it against Tullamarine as well.” Mantynen said the side’s goal kicking was another issue this season, as the side has not made the most of its opportunities. “They didn’t blow us out of the game itself, but they did on the scoreboard.” Four players kicked multiple goals for the Sharks and Michael Ajaimy was named their best. Ruckman Lachlan Rayner and Liam Johnstone both played well, as did Victor

Micallef when he went forward. Bailey Ryan, in his third senior game, showed good signs. The Sharks finished with no fit players on the bench. Kye Rishworth was the main injury concern with a suspected ACL. The loss leaves the Sharks two games outside the top four. Mantynen said they were in a little bit better position than they thought they would be with injuries and a young side. He said they were closer to fielding a full side on the park. “We can’t afford any more mishaps now,” he said. The Sharks hope to get back on the winners’ list against a winless Oak Park side. In division 2, Burnside Heights suffered an upset loss to East Sunbury. The Bears got off to a good start and led by 21 points at the first change, but there was little to smile about after that. The Thunder kicked nine goals to four after quarter-time, to win 11.14 (80)-9.7 (61). Josh Covelli kicked three goals for the Bears, in a quiet day for him. Despite the loss, the Bears remain in second spot. They have a bye this week. In the women’s premier competition, Burnside Heights had a convincing win against Pascoe Vale. The Bears could quite easily have won by a lot more, had they kicked straight, winning 8.21 (69)-1.0 (6). Kayla Ravanello kicked five goals for the Bears. Hillside lost to Aberfeldie 14.13 (97)-0.2 (2).
