Master of his craft

(Joe Mastroianni)

John McAleer may not be an avid watcher of MasterChef MasterChef, but there’s still a little bit of him in every episode. The Melton jeweller has been making the iconic pins, which give the wearers the ability to avoid elimination from the competition, for the past six seasons of the hit tv show. Amazingly, he almost missed the chance to be part of the long-running series. “I got a phone call randomly just before Good Friday about six years ago asking me to make these pins,” he said. “They told me they needed three pins in a week, and it was just before Easter when we close, but I obviously knew of the show so thought I’d better do it. “I don’t even watch the show, so I just assumed they gave them to the contestants at the end, but now each year I get an email with another order for about three pins and away we go. “I’ve had regular customers come in and tell me they’ve seen the pins, or send me screen grabs, so locals do get a buzz out it, which is really nice.” He said the MasterChef pins were not difficult to make once he had the template mastered. And while a pin is on display at the John McAleer Jewellery Designs store on High Street, and he’s received many requests to sell them, he said he never will. Ewen McRae

Pokies record for Melton By Ewen McRae Melton gamblers lost a record amount on gaming machines in the past 12 months, continuing a six-year trend of growing losses. Almost $68 million was lost within the City of Melton in the 2018-19 financial year, up from $66 million in the previous year, $49.3 million in 2010-11 and $24 million in 2002-03, according to the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation. Seven venues in Melton operate electronic

gaming machines, sharing 515 machines in total. Melton community planning manager Matt Wilson said the council was working hard to reduce the harm of pokies losses. “Our work is focused on reducing the impact of the design and availability of gambling products, preventing exposure to young people and minors and challenging normalisation of electronic gaming machines,” he said. “Council is committed to preventing and reducing the harms of gambling and we work

to align with current health promotion and prevention practice. “Earlier this year, council adopted a Planning Scheme Amendment (C182) that included a Local Planning Policy in Gaming.” Moorabool gamblers lost $12.3 million on pokies for the 2018-19 year – up from $11.9 million the previous year, while nearby Brimbank topped the state again with $142.9 million in losses. Alliance for Gambling Reform spokesman Tim Costello said Victorian pokies losses were about more than money.

“In extreme cases, poker machines cause the loss of lives via suicide,” he said. “Then there is the loss of homes, families, relationships, jobs, cars and much more due to gambling harm. “We call on the Victorian government to outlaw the predatory and addictive features on poker machines that trick people into believing they are winning when they are actually losing money. “These losses disguised as wins and near misses are just abuse of punters and are frankly immoral.”

Melton keen to keep going green By Ewen McRae Melton is leading the way in Melbourne in terms of increasing tree coverage, bucking a city-wide trend. A report from the Centre for Urban Research showed that Melbourne has lost almost 2000 hectares of tree cover in the past five years as suburban backyards are cleared for new housing. However the vast majority of the reductions occurred in the traditionally leafy suburbs, with Melton increasing its tree coverage by almost 2 per cent between 2018-19.

‘‘

The Western region has the lowest baseline tree cover - Centre for Urban Research

’’

Whittlesea, Wyndham and Maribyrnong council areas were the next best, all increasing tree coverage by 1-2 per cent, with most of the improvements coming in public spaces. By comparison, Yarra Ranges Shire had a canopy decrease of almost 5 per cent. Eastern suburban Maroondah has shed more than

three percentage points of its canopy cover and Mornington Peninsula has also lost 3 per cent. While the numbers were improving, the report showed that Melton still had the lowest percentage of tree coverage in urbanised areas of all Melbourne councils. The report stated the improvement in tree canopy cover across the west was the result of council and environmental groups’ efforts. “The Western region has the lowest baseline tree cover, and is experiencing modest gains across residential land, parkland and streets,” the report stated. “The increase in parks and streets may reflect

the significant focus across the western suburbs on greening the public realm. “Planting trees has limited impact on vegetation cover in the short term but will have an increasingly significant impact as the trees mature.” The report concluded that development and homeowners’ decisions to clear or reduce the amount of greenery in their yards were playing a significant part in reducing Melbourne’s overall urban tree cover. with Adam Carey/The Age

Daffodil Day’s special meaning Kurunjang nurse Sam Butcher has seen first hand the impact of cancer. Working at Royal Melbourne Hospital, she faces it every day – and that’s what inspired her to start volunteer fundraising for The Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day three years ago. The fundraising appeal runs throughout August, culminating in Daffodil Day on August 23. “My nan passed away from lung cancer about 25 years ago, so I do it to support the work of the Cancer Council in helping people living with cancer,” Ms Butcher said.

“I also look after patients with brain cancer every day, so it really hits home with me. “It’s nice when people talk to you about their stories. It can be a tricky conversation to have with people. “It’s an important day to raise awareness and help other people feel like they can talk.” With an average of 455 people diagnosed with cancer in the Melton council area each year, the funds raised through Daffodil Day are invested in research to improve treatments and early detection. Each year as part of the appeal’s activities,

the likes of teddy bears, pins and daffodils are sold. “Everybody knows that it’s coming up – and they all want to help out to support the day,” Ms Butcher said. “It’s everything for the Cancer Council, because it raises money for the research to help people living with cancer. “It improves their chances of living longer and also improving their lifestyle when they get told they’ve got cancer.” Details: daffodilday.com.au

Ollie, Jake and mum Sam are helping out with this year’s Daffodil Day.

The new Caroline Springs war memorial will be officially consecrated at a dedication ceremony this weekend. After years of hard work, the Caroline Springs RSL officially unveiled its new memorial near Lake Caroline during this year’s Anzac Day service. This Sunday, a formal dedication ceremony will take place, allowing the RSL to include the memorial on Victoria’s war memorial register. The memorial was built after the RSL secured two $40,000 grants, one each from Melton council and the Department of Veteran Affairs. Caroline Springs RSL membership officer Peter Burquest said the memorial, which features rows of poppies and the words ‘Les We Forget’, was important to the community. The ceremony, which will start at 10am, will be followed by the RSL sub-branch’s annual veterans lunch. The lunch honours all veterans for their service to the community, and will be held at the WestWaters Hotel, Lake Street, from noon-4pm. Tickets cost $35 for members and $50 for non-members. To attend, phone 9307 8072.

Kurunjang country singer Kerryn Fields has always had music coursing through her body. After growing up in New Zealand listening to her parents vinyl records, Fields moved to Australia to pursue a career in music – and is now a finalist at the iconic Gympie Music Muster later this month. “It’s very exciting – I’ve never been to Gympie before so I’m looking forward to being a part of it,” she said. “My mum played music and my dad was a storyteller, so combining those two elements has become my passion. “I love storytelling and songs with stories … I guess most artists that tell a lot of stories in their songs have led some interesting lives and are using songwriting as an outlet for that.

“I can’t wait to share the stage with some of the artists at Gympie.” Fields said all parts of her life would be on stage at Gympie. “I write a lot about love and the secret languages of love,” she said. “I guess I touch on a lot of parts of the human condition and how we live – I think it’s quite a fascinating subject to observe. “Growing up in New Zealand, there’s lots of rivers and mountains and open roads, so I’m a country kid who grew up with country music, and now I’m a country musician.” The 28th Gympie Music Muster will run from August 22-25. Bravery and smiles in Kurunjang By Ewen McRae Michael and Frances Farrugia are used to facing adversity. They’ve faced it just about every day since their daughter, Sarah, was born 11 years ago – and with every new challenge they have found a way. But now the Kurunjang couple and their family need some help. Sarah came in to the world as a healthy child, but soon after things began to change and life has never been the same for Michael and Frances and their children. “It was about six months after she was born … she started to develop infantile spasms,” Michael said. “So we were at the Royal Children’s Hospital where they tried inoculating her with steroids to break off these seizures, but sadly it never changed and it blew into full-on epilepsy. “From there she digressed. She lost whatever she had at the time and she kept on going backwards. “Over the years it’s also meant she doesn’t have just one condition – she has cerebral palsy, a rare strain of epilepsy, gord, dyskinesia as well as being cortically blind.” Sarah can no longer orally eat and drink. She is fed through a tube to her stomach and her parents have to keep a close eye on her to ensure they are ready if a seizure strikes. All this means a huge strain on the family, which includes older brother Jesse, 13, and youngest Jonah, 7. If that wasn’t enough, Frances also has treatment for MS, while Jesse has recently been diagnosed with high-functioning autism. “We’re so used to it now, but we are always on alert,” Frances said. “It’s very taxing at times, but we’ve got an OK handle on things with

Sarah at the moment and we want to make sure that our son [Jesse] doesn’t get left behind in it all.” The family will soon receive a seizure dog, that will be Sarah’s constant companion to alert her parents if there is a seizure and also comfort Sarah at the time. The biggest current battle for the family is its desperate need for a new car, with its current vehicle unsuitable. Both Michael and Frances have had to stop working to take care of Sarah, placing a financial toll on the young family. “It’s [the car] been something that’s been in decline for some time, to the point that sometimes we turn the key and the car won’t start,” Michael said. “Having a wheelchair means there’s only so many cars that are suitable … then you have to convert it so the wheelchair can fit in, so the cost is quite significant. “With hospital visits, and Sarah spends some time in hospice care, as well as just normal family outings, we really do need a new car.” Through all the ups and downs the family has stuck together. “When you have a disabled child in the family, you can’t hide it, but you try to be as normal as you can,” Frances said. Michael added: “You can’t help but go a bit crazy, but I say that with a smile. We’re constantly tired, and sometimes you do just want to shut down, but we’re always quietly optimistic. “We always find that no matter how bad something gets that we always manage to get through it together. I think that’s why we can still smile.” A friend of the family has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds to go towards a car for the family: bit.ly/2yyQdc1

Honouring excellence Thirty local businesses are in the running for the 2019 City of Melton Business Excellence Awards, after the finalists were announced last week. A range of businesses from hospitality, trades, professional services, creative industries and more are in the running to win a business excellence award across 12 categories, including Business of the Year. The awards, now in their 13th year, recognise and reward the contributions businesses make to the City of Melton and this year there was a 50 per cent increase in nominations. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the quality of entrants was as high as it had ever been. “I’d like to congratulate each of the finalists for making it this far,” Cr Turner said.

“I’m continually impressed by the outstanding achievements of local businesses and I look forward to celebrating the innovation, talents and contributions of our finalists. “These awards are one of many council initiatives working to help local businesses thrive in the City of Melton. “We’re grateful for the support from our event sponsors who help make the business awards possible.” The Business of the Year will be decided from among the winners of the categories. The awards gala dinner will be held at Tabcorp Park on August 30. Tables for the event can be booked at trybooking.com/BDAXB Ewen McRae

NBN spreads its Melton reach By Ewen McRae Parts of Hillside and Taylors Hill are set to complete the transition to the NBN in the coming weeks. About 420 homes and business in parts of Hillside, Taylors Hill and Wyndham Vale are still to connect to the network as part of a nationwide upgrade to Australian telecommunications. From August 9, most existing landline phone and internet services in the area will be progressively replaced by the new network and will no longer work over the existing

infrastructure. More than 2400 homes and businesses in the area have placed an order for NBN services in the past 18 months. However, connecting is not automatic, and those who are yet to switch are encouraged to contact their preferred phone and internet service provider to place an order as soon as possible to continue using their landline phone and internet services. Residents and business owners should call their internet provider and speak about their internet needs and any special equipment or services operating on their current landline

connection, including EFTPOS terminals, and medical and security alarms. Victorian head of local for NBN Co, Matt Evans, said it was important that residents and businesses still on landline begin making the switch. “It’s important for residents and businesses to remember the move to the NBN access network is not automatic – people need to speak to their retailer in order to continue to use their fixed line telecommunications services,” Mr Evans said. “While many homes and businesses in the area have already made the switch to a

service over the NBN access network, this is the final stage of the transition to the new infrastructure and brings the community closer to fully embracing the benefits of fast broadband. “If you have any special equipment that operates on your current landline, it’s important you talk with your phone and internet service provider to get the right support when moving across. “You should also visit the NBN Co website to register devices such as medical alarms and lift phones.” Details: www.nbnco.com.au

Mastering the game Women are being invited to join the first inner west AFLW over-35s side. Williamstown Superules masters football club co-ordinator, Sharlene “Charlie” Hetherington, said the side started this year and was seeking more women to sign up. “We’ve got 19 women that had never played football before and have lived out this childhood dream,” she said. “Some of the people are saying that in their families it was just not something that was supported or allowed. “Other people were saying [they] played in primary school but they got to year 11 and 12 and were told, nup, girls can’t play footy. “It’s quite unique that there’s this coming together of this band of women, of various abilities and shapes and sizes and reasons they’re there, that have formed this bond.” Hetherington said the club had created

a camaraderie among a network of women whom otherwise may never have met. “The friends that I’ve made this year through football – some women that have experienced family violence, that have experienced significant isolation or mental health issues – they now have a network of 40 women that are in their life to step in and support them and feel they’re proud of something. “A few women have said, ‘I’ve actually joined just to get street cred with my kids so that they can see I can start something new at 40, that you are never too old to learn new skills; that this is completely out of my comfort zone’.” Women can join in various capacities – not just as players – including as social members. Homeless on the rise in the west By Alesha Capone

Melton stars shoot for glory

Homelessness workers say more people are sleeping rough in the west. Northern and Western Homelessness Network representative Meredith Gorman said homelessness was becoming more visible across Melbourne’s suburbs. “We are now seeing people sleeping rough in areas such as Werribee and Dallas, as well as in the city,” she said. “It is distressing for the community to witness the high level of vulnerability and need that we are seeing on the streets of Melbourne.” According to the 2016 census, Melton had 333 homeless, a 25 per cent increase since 2011. The Northern and Western Homelessness Network is made up of 50 specialist homelessness and family violence organisations. Ms Gorman said people sleeping rough “represent the tip of iceberg in terms of homelessness in Melbourne”. In 2017-18, homelessness services in Melbourne’s north and west provided support to 31,000 households, which were home to more than 6000 children. In addition, Ms Gorman said that as of March last year, a further 3837 people in the north and west were waiting for “urgent access to housing and homelessness support”. Ms Gorman said two reasons behind the rise in homelessness across the past two decades included a growing shortage of affordable rental housing and an increase in poverty. The H3 Wyndham Alliance, will host a number of activities for Homelessness Week (August 4-10), including a community barbecue at Uniting Wyndham, 19 Duncans Road, Werribee from noon on Thursday, August 8. Contact Caroline.Carreno@vt.uniting.org for details.

Melton basketballers Ella Macleod and Mackenzie Reddrop have always dreamed of playing on a big stage – and next month they will get their chance. The pair will take part in the Under-14 National Club Championships in Ballarat in September after their Melbourne Tigers side won through to the prestigious tournament. For Ella, 13, it’s been a long road to get to this point. “I’ve been playing since I was about five, just mucking around on the courts in Melton and then decided to join a team,” she said. “We both eventually moved to the Melbourne Tigers to challenge ourselves a bit. We both want to make something like the WNBL or the WNBA and hopefully achieve a lot in the sport.” Ella regularly plays in the centre position, while Mackenzie is a star guard, winning the MVP award at a recent junior competition. They are joining their team in fundraising to send them and their support staff to Ballarat. “We need to raise about $2000 each, so as a team that’s quite a bit,” Ella said. The championships will be held in Ballarat from September 30 to October 5. The team has set up a GoFundMe page to help its fundraising efforts: bit.ly/2ZwehIw ELLA MACLEOD AND MACKENZIE REDDROP

A Bacchus Marsh company has launched itself into a multi-million-dollar world market, with the invention of two fruit packaging machines. The company, DDM Fruit Handling Equipment, has developed machines for both the apple and citrus industry which will accelerate the conventional packaging methods sixfold, while significantly cutting labor and material costs.

The Bacchus Marsh Shire Council has reacted quickly to the unauthorised chopping of branches of one of the elm trees in the Shire’s historic Avenue of Honor. Health surveyor Mr Kevin Ianna reported to the council that: “A tree on the south side of the Avenue of Honor, adjacent to an orchard where the fruit kiosk ‘Eden Valley’ was located, has been cut or lopped by a person associated with a nearby orchard.”

Melton South Football Club officials have criticised a decision to suspend a young reserves player for more than two years for abusing and assaulting an umpire. The Ballarat Football League tribunal last week found Tamar Elgmagharby, 21, of Melton South, guilty of abusing and assaulting an umpire during a Melton South-Sunbury game.

A building company that targeted Sudanese and Somali families has been ordered to finish 21 houses it abandoned, including five in Melton. But a Sudanese migrant still waiting for his house to be finished in Brookfield fears he will never live in it.

THE NEW MANOR LAKES CENTRAL SHOPPING CENTRE TRANSFORMING A COMMUNITY

Commonwealth Bank employee Amy Bourke and Rosie.

(Shawn Smits)

The redeveloped Manor Lakes Central Shopping Centre will become a hub for the local community featuring the latest concept Kmart, Coles, Best & Less, a large fruit and vegetable store, a continental deli and an additional 38 specialty stores.

Banking on the kids Shoppers in Ballan could not miss a special visitor last month, and it was all for a special cause. A giant piggy bank, stretching three metres in height and weighing in at 700 kilograms, rolled into town on July 26, taking up residence out the front of the Commonwealth Bank as part of the Very Special Kids Piggy Bank Appeal. The piggy bank is making its way across Victoria with the aim of raising $1 million for children with life-threatening conditions. The local bank helped the fundraising efforts by selling cute piggy merchandise and encouraging the community to support local families in need. The Knight family from Ballarat has been using Very Special Kids services for more than

a year now, to help support their 10-year-old son Noah, who suffers from a neurological genetic disorder. “Now that he’s getting older Very Special Kids gives him some independence,” says Noah’s mother, Virginia. “It’s a good way for him to make friends and get out of the house”,. Very Special Kids supports more than 900 families across Victoria, who are caring for children with life-threatening conditions. The organisation provides 24-hour nursing care at Victoria’s only children’s hospice, as well as professional support services for their families.

This variety of retailers, range of dining options and designated community areas provide plenty of ways to shop, dine and play. Alfresco dining spaces will link indoor and outdoor shopping areas and connect to landscaped gardens and interactive play areas for children, complete with bike tracks and mini climbing walls.

Ewen McRae

Access to the shopping centre will be made easy with 500 new parking spaces to be constructed, taking total parking capacity at the centre to more than 900 cars. Manor Lakes Central is situated on Ballan Road at Manor Lakes, just 10 minutes from Werribee and located in the second fastest growth area in Victoria. Construction is currently underway and the refurbishment is on track to be complete in March/April 2020. FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir pays homage to the Republika We applaud what Eva Maddox and her crew are doing at Ragusa Republika. Here there are no shortcuts, cutting of corners or scrimping. Everything is high class and stylish, the dining room itself elegant and warmed just right on the chilly night we visit. That hands-on approach extends to just about every aspect of the food, from house-made stocks and up. Eva and wine expert Pino are enthusiastic out front and Team CTS – Kenny, Bennie, Nat – very much enjoys taking up the invitation of a complimentary meal. The prices here are on the high side – but punters most definitely get what they pay for. Our Croatian food adventure starts with a bang and hardly ever lets up. Warm, fresh-baked rolls are sensational and served with olive oil and (house-made) ajvar (relish). Zagorski strukli are traditional baked pastry pillows filled with ricotta and truffle oil ($19). We get one apiece – and it’s almost like they float to our eager mouths. The squid ink dumplings that come with crni njoki ($20/$39) are almost as light, though it is the fresh-as calamari with garlic and chilli that truly grabs the attention. The chicken noodle soup is the big hit of the night. It has just the right amount of oil to lend every mouthful a velvety feel. And, yep, the noodles are housemade. Bennie is very satisfied with his svinjska

RAGUSA REPUBLIKA Address: 139 Nelson Place, Williamstown Phone: 9069 6690 rebra iz paca sa satarasom ($44). He reports that while the marinated and roasted pork belly meat is not fall-apart tender, it remains moist and “just right” to his way of thinking. Ribarska popara – traditional seafood stew with paprika, chilli, tomato and polenta ($42) – juggles the delicate and the lusty just as well as I have been expecting. The one dish that falls short of delighting us is Nat’s lignje u proseku of roasted calamari with potato, capers and prosek ($41). For all we know, this could be an outstanding rendition of this dish. But the combined sweetness of the onions and dessert wine leaves us more puzzled than anything. Strudla od visnje (sour cherry strudel with hazelnut ice cream, $17) and knedle (plum dumplings with plum sauce and sour cream, $17) are every bit as perfect and sweet-withsome-sour as father and son were hoping for. Will we return to Ragusa Republika under our own steam and as paying customers? Yes we will – for more of that chicken soup. (Consider The Sauce dined at Ragusa Republika courtesy of management.)

Research is the key to finding your next home Knowledge is power in the property market and buyers’ advocate Nicole Jacobs shares her wisdom.

Comparable properties Knowing what comparable properties have sold for in recent months is a very strong guide as to the price range a property you are interested in will achieve on auction day or that you need to meet when you decide to make an offer for a private sale. Make sure that the comparable properties sold quite recently, since some areas will see considerable growth in six to 12 months. Selling agents will be able to give you more accurate information based on the

(iStock)

Initial research There is a wealth of information right at your fingertips. You can simply Google a suburb to discover the median prices for both houses and apartments, which, right from the start, will give you an excellent indication if this is somewhere you can afford. If you find a property that appeals, you can even find out when it last sold and for how much. There could be old photographs online that will show you if subsequent owners have done any renovations. Plus, there will be any number of comparable properties in the area. It is important that you do this research independently of the selling agent, if only for the peace of mind it will give you: no matter what you hear from other sources – the current owners, the selling agent, your family – you will know what the facts are because of your own research.

fact that they look after a particular area and understand local markets intimately, including competition and supply and demand. And then there is also the emotional factor to take into account, which no research figures can ever factor in. Remember, though, that if the selling

agent is offering certain properties as comparable, it is up to you to make sure they are. Not all three-bedroom houses, even in the same suburb, are equal. Is it in a better street? Is the overall floor plan similar? Is either of the homes much closer to amenities? All these things can make

a big difference when it comes to the eventual selling price. This is an edited extract from SOLD! by Nicole Jacobs, published by Hardie Grant Books, RRP $29.99, and available in stores nationally.

21 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 6, 2019

SPORT Westside Strikers step up for a tough victory Westside Strikers have pulled off an upset win against Surf Coast in FFV state league 5 west. The Strikers continued their good form of recent weeks in Saturday afternoon’s 2-1 win. For most of the match, the Strikers looked the better team and scored twice, though Surf Coast got a late consolation goal through a penalty. Strikers president Sam Raniolo said it was a good performance. “Surf Coast is a tough side and we always have tough games,” he said. “The boys stepped up and played well.” Raniolo said the margin could have been greater, given the number of chances the

players enjoyed, but not being able to convert had been a frustrating element of their game throughout the season. He said it had cost them a couple of wins and a higher spot on the ladder. “We missed a couple of early goals,” he said. “It’s been a problem … we went through a bad trot and haven’t been able to get the ball in the back of the net.” The win is the Strikers’ third in four rounds and they are fifth on the ladder. With promotion out of the equation, the Strikers are keen to make sure they finish at least fourth or fifth. Raniolo said a poor four-round period in the middle of the year

had proven costly in terms of their promotion dreams. In that period, they lost all four games, conceding at least four goals in each game. “We now want to consolidate fourth or fifth,” he said. “Being in our first year in this division, we will be happy. “Considering it’s our second year of senior football at Westside Strikers, it’s a good achievement. “We’re used to winning and sometimes that can’t happen all the time.” The Strikers have this week off as a competition-wide catch-up round is played. Raniolo said it was the perfect time for them to have a bye.

In other results, Spring Hills had a 3-0 loss to Truganina Hornets. The Stallions are in ninth place. In state league 5 west, Melton Phoenix went down 3-1 to Barnstoneworth United. The Phoenix sit in eighth place on the ladder. In state league 1 north-west, Caroline Springs George Cross’ good form continued with a 4-2 win against Brimbank Stallions. The Georgies have won five out of their past six games to sit fifth on the ladder. They will face Banyule City in a twilight match on Saturday as part of the catch-up round. Tara Murray

Hockey

Melton had a 5-0 win against local rival Caroline Springs in Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 3 at the weekend. It was a dominant performance from the Mustangs, who are looking to play finals. Daniel Baker, Chu Che Hu, Hayden, Riley and Tejay Lawrence scored for the Mustangs. The Mustangs women’s side had a 5-1 loss to ECHO in Vic League 2.

Big V

Sharks snapping at title

Melton Thoroughbreds season came to a heartbreaking end against the Chelsea Gulls in Big V men’s youth league 2. In a thrilling elimination final, the result was decided in the dying seconds. The Thoroughbreds led by five points with two minutes to go. The Gulls had the better of the dying minutes, hitting the lead with 35 seconds to go. The Thoroughbreds had the chance to go back in front, but Jackson Jones could only hit one free throw to level the scores. The Gulls then hit the winner with six seconds to go, to win 87-86. Max Beaumont top scored with 21 points.

Hillside’s remarkable season will continue for at least another week after the side won its first ever final. The surprise packet of the Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division, the Sharks again showed on Saturday that they cannot be discounted in the finals. The elimination game was the second successive week they had played Burnside Heights and it was a lot closer match. It was an even first quarter before the Sharks opened up a two-goal lead in the second. At the final change it was a seven-point lead to the Sharks and they held their nerve to run out winners 7.6 (48)-4.5 (29). Sharks coach Justin Fairservice said he was proud of the playing group. “It’s just a little exciting,” he said. “It’s an unknown to win a final. “They came out hard and we were able to 22 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 6, 2019

weather the storm. I was really happy.” Fairservice said despite being the least experienced of the two sides, the Sharks were confident they could go on with the job at three-quarter time. He said the understrength Bears side started to tire in the third quarter. “We’ve worked hard on our fitness this year and the girls are able to run out the game well. “I said stick to the structures and stick to our brand. I didn’t think they had anything left for us.” Ebony Wilkie was the star up forward for the Sharks with four goals. Fairservice said Rachael Jackson at half-back and Annalise Wilkie were the other two standouts in the win. In one downside for the Sharks, Rachel Burton will face the tribunal during the week. Burton and Burnside’s Brodie Stevens have been reported for striking in the third quarter. Both were sent from the field after receiving

yellow cards in the incident. Fairservice said they got through unscathed injury-wise. The Sharks play the Sunbury Kangaroos in a semi-final this week. The two teams have faced each other twice during the season. The Kangaroos won the first game, while the second was called off just before quarter-time when an ambulance was called for Ebony Wilkie. Fairservice, who was an interested spectator as the Kangaroos lost to Keilor on Saturday in their qualifying final, said it would be an interesting match-up. The Kangaroos lost to Keilor 8.5 (53)-5.4 (34). “It was disappointing last time not to play a whole game,” he said of their match against the Kangaroos. “They controlled the first five minutes and then we got into the game.” In the other semi-final, Aberfeldie will play Keilor for a spot in the grand final.

Bacchus Marsh had an important win in the run home to the Ballarat Netball League finals. Needing wins to move into the top six, the Cobras beat Sebastopol 48-43. The Cobras moved out to an early lead and while they were able to stay in front throughout the game, they were never able to blow the game out. Kaila Ingham was the Cobras’ best. The Cobras sit percentage outside the top six with three rounds remaining. Darley lost to Sunbury Lions, 68-23, while Melton lost to Lake Wendouree, 57-35. Two in a row is timely boost for Melton’s Bloods Melton has finally notched up two wins in a row in the Ballarat Football League. Having been inconsistent from week to week, the Bloods scored an important victory on Saturday against Lake Wendouree in their push to secure their spot in the top six and to finish the regular season as high up the ladder as possible. Bloods coach Aaron Tymms said achieving successive wins was very satisfying. “The last time we did that was in round three and four,” he said. “It’s the first hurdle we needed to cross to make finals. We’re not safe yet. “We thought if we could get off to a good start, that we could break them mentally. “They were good for a while, but we able to break them.” After leading by 14 points at quarter-time, the Bloods kicked away in the next three quarters to record a 18.13 (121)-7.3 (45) victory.

Tymms said it was nice to be able to sit back and simply watch later in the game. He said it was a good, even performance across the board. “Most players are starting to hit their straps now,” he said. “Braedan Kight ended up with eight goals, while Liam Carter [four goals] was also good up forward. “The whole midfield group was good, too.” The win moves the Bloods up to fifth in a very even ladder, with a game separating the top six teams. Tymms said the players knew there was still plenty of work to do and that the possibility of missing out on finals remained. “We face second, third and fourth in the run home and hopefully we can get a win in at least one of those games to seal our spot,” he said. “Having hard games can go either way. You can have sore bodies and be flat – or

you can string games together and be full of confidence.” Tymms said there were two or three players to come back as the club closed in on having its best side on the park. The Bloods’ next challenge will be against the in-form Sunbury Lions, who have won their past six games and sit third. Tymms said it was a match he was looking forward to. “Sunbury gave us a good touch up earlier in the year,” he said. “They are well drilled and they have talent everywhere across the board.” In other results, Darley was smashed 9.10 (64)-2.9 (21) by the Lions. Bacchus Marsh lost 12.7 (79)-6.8 (44) to Sebastopol. Tara Murray Melton ruckman Ben Archard. (Shawn Smits)

Injured Bears succumb By Tara Murray Burnside Heights’ hopes of upsetting the Sunbury Kangaroos have been undone by injuries. Hoping to inflict the Kangaroos first loss of the Essendon District Football League division 2 season, the Bears started well and led by 10 points at the first break. But from there, the Bears dealt with injury after injury. Through their lack of fresh legs, the margin blew out, with the Kangaroos winning 23.19 (157)-9.7 (61). Bears president Justin Peagram rued the injury toll. “From halfway through the third quarter, we had no bench and other players were cramping due to a lack of rotations,” he said. “They all started to fall down … we ran out of legs. “Once we knew the game was over, we looked to make sure there weren’t any more injuries and the margin blew out.” Those who failed to finish out the game included Michael Wever, Theodore Sapountzis, Danny Grantham and Mark Tzinis. While disappointed not to go with the Kangaroos for the whole first quarter, Peagram said the match-ups prepared by coach Aidan Stott had worked. “He wanted to try something different and we started OK and it caught Sunbury off guard,” he said. Anthony Fawcus was the Bears’ best in the loss and one of three players to kick two goals apiece. Peagram said it would be a matter of waiting to see whether the injured quartet got up this week. The Bears were also without full forward Josh Covelli, who is having ankle problems. “There’s no structural damage,” Peagram said. “Josh wants to be out there and wants to play finals. It’s about how we best manage it.” The loss means the Bears have slipped from second to fourth and drop a big amount of percentage. With two rounds remaining, they are two games and more than 30 per cent ahead of fifth-placed Northern Saints. Peagram said they would like to get at least one more win on the board to ensure they lock up the club’s first senior men’s finals berth. He said they were still looking at a top two finish, with second-placed Moonee Valley and third-placed Coburg Districts still to play the Sunbury Kangaroos. “We still have to win a game to seal our finals spot,” he said. “We’ve got two tough games coming up. East Sunbury we haven’t beaten in about four years.”

Sunbury’s Brenton Sutherland and Burnside’s Michael Wever compete. (Shawn Smits)

He said Hadfield was in a similar position to that of the Bears last year – out of finals contention, but looking to finish the season on a high. In division 1, Hillside’s finals bid suffered

another blow with a loss to West Coburg. Despite having more scoring shots, the Sharks lost 9.14 (68)-10.11 (71). The Sharks sit two games and percentage outside the top four.

Centrals set new target Melton Centrals are hoping to finish its season on a high in the Riddell District Football League. After equalling last year’s win tally, Centrals have two matches to go ahead of that total. On Saturday they made it win number six of the season, beating Broadford. After an even first half, Centrals kicked away to win 18.8 (116)-2.8 (20). Coach Mathew Sproule said he was happy with how they played out the game. “Broadford took it up to us early,” he said. “We had been playing clunky football, but the second half was more like it. “Broadford generally drop away after half-time. We thought we could stretch them in the second half, as they don’t have the same fitness.” Daniel Foley fired up Centrals in the third quarter, dominating off half-back with a best on ground performance. Dylan Weir kicked six goals, while Jarrod Johns kicked five. It was a return to form for Centrals. Sproule said their forward line had struggled the past eight weeks making it hard to string the wins together. He said their game had dropped off after losing to Woodend-Hesket, which ended their finals’ hopes. “That game took the air out of us,” he said. “That game was disappointing with the attitude. “Now it’s about getting some reward for effort. We play Rockbank this week and Macedon the week after. “If we play like last time, we will finish one game and percentage outside of finals.” Sproule said he was unsure if they had closed the gap on the top six, but they were still focused on the long-term goals. All but one junior side made finals, while their under-19s will also play finals. Their reserves are still a chance of making finals as well. “We’re not consistent against the top teams,” Sproule said. “With the points system and a lot of new blokes, we’re not gelling as well as we wanted. “It’s not necessarily about making finals. It’s about making sure we’re in a position to play finals regularly.” In other results, Rockbank lost to Macedon 33.22 (220)-1.1 (7) Tara Murray 23 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 6, 2019
