Recycling sent to tip By Ewen McRae Moorabool council will be forced to send kerbside recycling material to landfill following the closure of recycling company SKM. SKM was declared insolvent by the Supreme Court on August 2, leaving more than 30 councils across Victoria without a recycling supplier. Moorabool council entered into a two-week arrangement with a small operation near Ballarat that has now reached capacity, leaving Moorabool without a recycling alternative. Council community assets and infrastructure general manager Phil Jeffrey said the SKM decision was impacting on numerous councils and made finding suitable replacements difficult.

Students find time to waste Melton Secondary College has taken the first steps towards a greener future, after conducting its first waste audit last week. The school, which has previously never had a recycling program, decided to raise awareness on the need to better manage waste at the school by dividing up rubbish from school bins to discover what could be recycled. Senior school team leader Max Beliniak said the results were amazing. “We tipped over nine bins and sorted it into six different categories to see where the rubbish around the school was coming from,” he said. “We found out that over half of the rubbish we sorted was able to be recycled. “We took spreadsheets of data which showed 90 litres of organics that could be composted, just over 7000 items of paper or cardboard, 2500 items of soft plastic, and only a very small amount that deserved to go to landfill. “The students were all really surprised by some of the things that got thrown out that was perfectly fine or able to be re-used.” Mr Beliniak said he hoped this would be a stepping stone to a proper recycling program at the school and sustainability improvements in their community. “We currently don’t have a recycling program, and there’s no education around recycling or sustainability at the school unless you do certain VCE subjects,” he said. “So it’s important for the kids future, because they’re going to be living on an Earth that’s surrounded by plastic and global warming.”

“Moorabool is one of more than 30 Victorian councils engaged in contracts with SKM,” he said. “Last week, SKM Corporate was declared insolvent and the company has ceased accepting recyclable materials. “Council was able to engage a small regional company to take the shire’s recyclables in the short term, but this has now reached capacity. “The remaining industry recyclers are currently experiencing extreme demand from numerous councils and therefore council will be sending recyclable materials to landfill in the short term until a sustainable arrangement can be secured. “We will keep the community posted on our website and Facebook pages. “Council greatly appreciates the community’s understanding during this complex statewide issue. We encourage residents to continue to sort recycling as we look to secure another receival facility.” Melton council, which has a recycling contract with Visy, urged residents to continue recycling as normal, with mayor Bob Turner saying recycling impacts all residents. “This is about keeping our city clean, keeping landfill to a minimum and reducing associated costs,” Cr Turner said last week. “If you’re putting the right things in your yellow bin, then your household recyclables are going to the right place, so please continue recycling.”

Flower show funding lopped off By Ewen McRae Moorabool council has backtracked on a grant approval for the Bacchus Marsh Flower and Garden show following a rescission motion at last week’s meeting. Council approved a $3000 grant for the event at its July meeting as part of its community grants program. The flower and garden show was the only application to receive funding that failed to meet council criteria for approval. Cr Jarrod Bingham successfully argued in July that the event deserved funding and would

deliver “a return on investment to expand an important event that will help the region”. A the time, the council was told the flower and garden show grant application was assessed by council officers and scored 64.93 per cent, with 70 per cent being the threshold for approval by the council.

Cr Tom Sullivan argued in July that picking just one of the eight unsuccessful applications for approval was not how council should be seen to conduct business. “Council put in place a process for the assessment of these community grants,” he said. “This group missed the mark by a whole five points – not a smidgen, a fairly substantial amount below the threshold.” Mayor Paul Tatchell moved a rescission motion at last week’s meeting to revert to the original officer recommendation, with

only those applications that met the council threshold receiving funding. “The amended resolution carried out at the ordinary meeting of council on July 3 is in breach of the council’s community grants policy,” Cr Tatchell said. “There are obvious repercussions for this.” The rescission motion was passed with no objections. The council approved 18 of 26 applications for funding in the grants program, totalling $175,000 in funding for a range of local projects and events.

A large electronic advertising sign is set to be installed on the Hopkins Road overpass of the Western Highway, following a ruling by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Advertising company JCDecaux Australia received a permit for the sign from Melton council in November, 2018, but the decision was taken to VCAT by Maple Media, which claimed the sign did not comply with the council’s polices for signage and would affect road safety. The sign was proposed to be 14.28 x 3.363 metres with an active screen measuring 39.93 square metres. Maple Media claimed the sign presented a safety issue and would distract drivers, with the Western Highway considered a “black spot area” after three fatal collisions in the past five years. But VCAT member Katherine Paterson concluded that the sign would comply with the council’s advertising signage policy and said that while the road was technically in a black spot, the type of road had to be factored in. “Whether the road is a local street or a freeway, if there have been three crashes it is considered to be a black spot,” she said. “If this was a local road it would be a cause for concern, however as it is a freeway that carries approximately 28,000 vehicles per day, in that context, three crashes between 2015-2018 is not significant.” A permit was granted for the sign for a period of 15 years.

MPs take highway fight higher By Ewen McRae A campaign to upgrade the Western Highway has clicked into gear again, with local MPs raising the issue in federal Parliament recently. Federal members Catherine King and Brendan O’Connor both used speeches in Parliament to call on the government to intervene to ease congestion and deliver long-awaited upgrades. Ms King, who holds the seat of Ballarat, said the upgrades were vital to the fast-growing communities the highway services.

“The link that the Western Highway provides between my electorate of Ballarat and Melbourne is integral to the continued population and economic growth of our regional communities,” she said. “It is the backbone of western Victoria. “As population continues to boom in Melbourne’s west the pace of travel on the road is only slowing. More than 60,000 vehicles travel along the Western Highway in each direction each day, spending increasing amounts of their time sitting still and going nowhere.

“These delays will only grow worse into the future with the highway projected to accommodate 85,000 vehicles per day by 2021 and 113,000 by 2031. “The road as it is simply cannot cope. “The government needs to stop ignoring our region and investigate the best way to move forward to ensure that our communities have the link to Melbourne befitting our rapidly growing population.” Ms King called on the government to deliver new interchanges to service the Melton West and Rockbank areas, as well as the addition of

lines and removal of a grade access between Melton and Caroline Springs. Mr O’Connor, who holds the seat of Gorton, echoed Ms King’s thoughts on the highway’s importance. “The Western Highway needs more investment,” Mr O’Connor said. “It is a very important transport link to not only Ballarat and Bendigo, but also to South Australia, and it’s important the federal government now commit to funding improvements to the Western Highway to ease the ever-growing congestion.”

Feel the need to read Local children are encouraged to pick up a book throughout August, as the MS Readathon hots up. The long-standing fundraiser supports participants to read as much as possible during the month of August and ask friends and family to sponsor them, with funds raised going to sending people living with multiple sclerosis on family camps. With 16,0000 students already registered to participate, the MS Readathon is Australia’s most popular reading marathon for kids. The MS Community Shop in Melton is offering a free book every day in August for Melton and Moorabool children taking part in the fundraiser. MS Community Shop manager Maxine Brown said she hoped local children with a love of reading would take advantage of the offer. “We have a great selection of books from

adventure and action series to funny books,” Ms Brown said. “There’s something of interest for everyone. The MS Readathon is a major fundraiser for us to support families battling this debilitating disease to relax and spend quality time together at MS Family Camps without being overshadowed by the pressures of having MS. “Everyone in our community has a connection to someone with multiple sclerosis.” Children must be under 16 to receive one free book per day from a special selection in the MS Shop until August 31. The shop also welcome additional donations of children’s books. The MS Community shop is at 53 Bakery Square, Melton. Details: www.msreadathon.org.au Ewen McRae

Residents vow to fight park plan By Ewen McRae Melton South residents who objected to a recent council decision on a portion of land say they are prepared to take their fight further. The council recently decided that a parcel of land at 3-13 McDonald Street, Melton South is no longer required for its original purpose, opening up the possibility of development. It follows a proposal from the Department of Health and Human Services received earlier this year to use one-third of the space for emergency care accommodation.

More than 200 residents signed a petition objecting to the change prior to the council decision, and a spokesperson for the residents said they felt they had been ignored in the decision. “We were very disappointed,” he said. “We gave in a petition with 200 people, who were all local to that park, and the council just snubbed it. “Our expectation when going along to that meeting was that the council wouldn’t go ahead with it, so we feel like we’ve been completely ignored in the decision making.

‘‘

We’re not going to go away ... we’re going to fight this - Spokesperson

’’

“Everybody is up in arms about this.” The residents say their main concern is with the loss of open recreation space in the area, with a playground on the site removed several years ago. The residents also said they will look at their

options in a bid to have the council decision reversed. “We’re having a meeting with the local member Steve McGhie, and we’ve also sent letters to [Local Government Minister] Adem Somyurek and also the Minister for Planning [Richard Wynne],” the spokesperson said. “We’re concerned that if this goes ahead with this one park that something similar could happen with other local parks. “We’re not going to go away, and there’s 200-odd people that are not going to go away, we’re going to fight this.”

Hope for youth services A year after launching its mobile youth outreach service, Hope Street Youth and Family Services has already doubled its anticipated numbers. The program launched in July 2018 with the goal of supporting 100 young locals experiencing homelessness, and has already helped 202 people. Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said the program had become an important addition to local services. “Every week we hear stories from the mobile outreach team about the young people who are coming forward for support,” Ms Bennett said. “The majority of them have left home due to traumatic, long-term family violence, neglect and poverty. “We are grateful that Hope Street teams can be there to welcome them and to provide the support they need within their local community, without them needing to relocate to the city or another area to find help.”

The outreach service includes emergency accommodation, meal and grocery vouchers, clothing, emergency backpacks containing toiletry items, support to engage in employment and education opportunities, help navigating the homelessness system and referrals. Hope Street is also currently constructing a purpose-built youth refuge in Melton, with the building expected to be complete by the end of 2019. The outreach service is supported by a grant from the Ian Potter Foundation, and foundation chair Charles Goode said they were proud to be helping reduce homelessness in Melton. “Hope Street’s First Response Youth Mobile Outreach Service is an example of what can be achieved when service providers work with the local community,” he said. Pop Culture Event: Essential Oils Workshop

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner Last weekend, Council and Caroline Springs RSL, honoured our fallen heroes, at the dedication of a new war memorial, situated on the promenade at Lake Caroline. The memorial is a partnership between Council and the Caroline Springs RSL, who received a Federal Government grant, to help deliver the project, and is a stunning reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave service men and women.

Essential oils can help strengthen your immunity, boost your energy, and assist with anxiety and sleep issues. They can even be used to provide relief from headaches, sore throats and digestive issues, and are commonly used to treat muscle aches and skin issues. As part of Melton City Council’s Pop Culture program, we’re hosting an introductory workshop where you can find out how to safely incorporate essential oils into your daily life. You’ll learn more about essential oils and how they can benefit you and your family. The workshop, on Friday 23 August, will include recipes for common health and wellness concerns, kids blends (for sleep, worry, overactive minds), and cleaning products that will reduce the use of chemicals in your home and improve your family’s health. At the workshop, you’ll even get to make your own essential oils roller to take home!

ESSENTIAL OILS WORKSHOP When: Friday 23 August Where: Burnside Community Centre, 23 Lexington Drive, Burnside Sessions: 6pm – 7.30pm OR 7.45pm – 9.15pm Entry: $5 (includes an essential oil roller bottle) Bookings essential: melton.vic.gov.au/essentialoils Ages 18+

It features a six metre, backlit laser-cut, poppy wall and another six metre, interpretive wall highlighting Australia’s contribution to the pursuit of peace, freedom and democracy in conflicts around the world, focussing on Army, Navy, Air Force, Indigenous forces, the contribution of women, and the animals who served by their side.

If you haven’t already, I encourage residents to visit the memorial and as a mark of respect for our fallen soldiers. Each year, on Vietnam Veterans Day, we remember those who fought for our country during the Vietnam War, in conditions that can only be described as truly horrific. On the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, Sunday 18 August, I invite everyone to join us at a special memorial, 10am at Melton cenotaph (High St) to remember the brave soldiers who were lost on that day; celebrate the spirit and courage shown by troops; and keep those who gave up their lives in our hearts. Cr Steve Abboushi Earlier this month, I had the privilege of hosting Mr Kimon Taliadoros, President of Football Victoria, and talking to him about the future of soccer in our City. I also had the opportunity to show Kimon around the City Vista Sports Precinct, a state-of-the-art soccer and recreation facility, recently constructed in Fraser Rise. The new facility features two grass soccer pitches and two synthetic soccer pitches, with spectator fencing, and sports field lighting; along with a pavilion, bistro, commercial kitchen, canteen space, umpires rooms, first aid rooms, eight change rooms, and storage, among other features. This $12 million project is the result of a partnership with George Cross Soccer Club who have contributed $1 million to the cost of the development, and will operate and maintain the pavilion and sports fields.

In recent weeks, we’ve experienced a spate of terrifying motor vehicle accidents on Westwood Drive, Burnside. As a result, I have submitted a Notice of Motion for the next Ordinary Council Meeting (19 August) asking for State representatives, Hon Marlene Kairouz MP, as well as members of the Victorian Legislative Council representing Western Victoria, advocating that VicRoads takes ownership of the Palmers Road Corridor, which includes Westwood Drive, and undertake urgent works on this stretch of road to prevent future incidents, injuries, or worse, fatalities. Property of the week

HARKNESS 10 Burswood Circuit, 3337 YPA Melton: 9746 8899

Price: $499,000 - $549,000

Tucked off Bulmans Road in attractive Peppermint Grove estate, this beautifully presented residence from Clearview Homes has a great layout for family life, plus a massive outdoor room that virtually doubles the living space. Entry is to a grey-tiled hallway, one wall of which rocks a subtle designer wallpaper that adds immediate elegance. The hall continues past a lounge/theatre room behind double doors, a space that could work as a fourth bedroom if needed, then through to the expansive living domain. 10 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 13, 2019

This has the same soft-grey wall paint, white trims and block-out roller blinds as appear all through, thus creating decor harmony and underscoring the sense of space. The kitchen, with stone-topped brekkie bench for four, has woodgrain-laminate cabinetry, a cupboard pantry, plumbed fridge recess, and stainless-steel dishwasher and 900mm cooker. The street-facing main bedroom has a walk-in robe and a spacious en suite with raised square basin. The other two fitted

bedrooms share a rear hallway with the main bathroom, separate toilet and the laundry. Also on board are ducted heating and evaporative cooling, a split-system, video intercom and alarm, upgraded security door and 2.7-metre ceilings. A massive Laserlite pergola, with exposed steel joists and grey concrete underfoot, has several glazed doors to back and side yards. Not only a fab entertainment space, it’s also perfect for kids’ play on rainy days. A second smaller alfresco area is

north-facing and accessible, as is the larger, from the living domain. The backyard, with tropical plantings, has a good wedge of lawn for pets and kids, and there’s plenty of room to add a vegie patch or playground. The block of about 535 square metres accommodates a storage shed, and a drive-through double garage with internal access via the entry hall. There’s also an electric gate for side access. SPORT Hillside claws back some respect with a welcome win Hillside ended a three-game losing streak with a hard-fought win against Westmeadows in Essendon District Football League division 1. After a nightmare back half of the season, the Sharks finally returned to the winners’ list on Saturday. Trailing for the first half, the Sharks hit the lead in the third quarter with a five-goal-to-three quarter. They continued that form in the final quarter, winning 11.17 (83)-9.7 (61). Sharks football manager Darren Mantynen said it was good to finally win another game. “It would not have been fair not to win a game in the second half of the year,” he said. “After the byes, we’ve had some injuries and we still had five blokes missing. We’re also keeping an eye on the under-19s. “It’s a good reward for the young boys.” Mantynen said they could have been leading at half-time but missed their chances.

They stepped up in the second half. “We felt that we were on top and we just needed to polish up to finish off the work.” Andrew Papazoglou kicked three goals and Mantynen said he was finally finding his feet at this level. Brandon Coletta, who has missed several games, provided a target up forward while Jackson Volpato also had a good game. Riza Gashi was given best on ground in what was his best game for the Sharks. Despite their three-game losing streak, the fifth-placed Sharks mathematically remain in finals contention. It would require them to win their last two games and hope that results go their way. With matches against second and third-placed sides Craigieburn and Tullamarine, Mantynen said they weren’t expecting to make finals. He said losses to Taylors Lakes and Roxburgh Park had cost them earlier in the season. He said instead everyone was focused on

finishing the season and coach Steve Burns’ time at Hillside on a high. “I think finals are pretty much off the cards,” he said. “The guys are still doing the right things and with two weeks to go are pretty much content to finish this year and on to next year.” The Sharks are expected to appoint their new coach in the coming weeks. Meanwhile in division 2, Burnside Heights is set to play finals for the first time despite losing to East Sunbury on Saturday. In a thriller, the Thunder continued its good form against the Bears, winning 9.6 (60)-7.10 (52). The Bears are one game and 25 per cent ahead of Northern Saints heading into the final round. Tara Murray Hillside’s Brandon Coletta comes from behind to spoil. (Shawn Smits)

Sharks find finals form By Tara Murray Hillside’s remarkable season will continue for at least another week, with the Sharks through to the Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division preliminary final. The surprise story of the season and now the finals, the Sharks are full of confidence. On Saturday, they beat the higher-ranked Sunbury Kangaroos in their semi-final. The Sharks were clearly the better team in notching up a 6.6 (42)-1.2 (8) victory. Sharks coach Justin Fairservice said he was “absolutely ecstatic”. “We played really well against a quality side – we’re really happy,” he said. Fairservice said that despite being underdogs, the Sharks were confident. He said they had stepped up their game every time they had played the Kangaroos during the year. “We were pretty pumped up,” he said. “We know we are improving and gave ourselves a chance.” Two goals with the breeze in the opening quarter gave the Sharks momentum. They restricted the Kangaroos to one goal in the second quarter to keep the lead at the main break. In the third quarter, the Sharks kicked three goals to nil to open up a 27-point lead heading into the final break. The Sharks kicked the only goal of the last quarter to put the icing on the cake. Fairservice said they were able to win the midfield battle and that flowed on across the game. “The pressure was the key,” he said. “We worked hard in the middle.” Emily Paterno kicked three goals for the Sharks despite some close checking. It was the defenders, though, who dominated in terms of the Sharks’ best players. Nikita Wright was named best on ground, while Rachael Jackson continued her good form. “Nikita was sensational and the others were really tight,” Fairservice said. “Nikita reads the ball so well.” The Sharks will face Keilor in the preliminary final. Last time the teams met, the Blues won by 27 points. But Farirservice said a lot had changed since then. “We can’t wait to get to training and [then] play Keilor,” he said. “We’re looking forward to it. “The first time we played Keilor, it was tough and they pulled away in the final quarter. We’ve changed since them.” Fairservice said that whatever the outcome 16 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 13, 2019

Hillside’s Annalise Wilkie fights off some defensive pressure. (Shawn Smits)

of the preliminary final, he would regard his players as winners this season. “We’ve got nothing to lose,” he said. “We’re enjoying our football and taking it one game at a time. If we can play our brand of football, we’ll see where it takes us.

“On our first night [two years ago], we had six girls. The club is happy and the staff are ecstatic.” Keilor will enter the preliminary final on the back of a 5.12 (42)-2.0 (12) semi-final loss to Aberfeldie.

Springers stick to the plan for push to finals Caroline Springs is hoping to launch into the last couple of rounds and then into finals in Hockey Victoria Vic League women’s 2. The Springers are already assured of a finals spot with two rounds remaining. First-year coach Beau Kelly said it had been an up and down season. “It’s been a tumultuous year to be honest,” he said. “To get into finals shows a lot of determination by the group. “We’ve struggled with player retention. “We’ve got 15 players out across the board. We’re not running with too many numbers.” Kelly said those missing were a mixture of injuries and others who had decided they had fallen out of love with the sport and stopped playing. He said other players had stepped up to fill the roles. “We’ve got a couple who started the season as second-side players who have stepped up and filled shoes. “Jaylen Spence has taken a big step up and is still an under-age player.” Kelly said despite the side winning the Vic League 2 title last season he hadn’t put too many expectations on the group. He said the changes to the squad had made it hard to gauge how they would go. The Springers have lost just two games for the year. “I didn’t want to set a ceiling on expectations for this year,” he said. “I really wanted to make finals. We have done that, now we shouldn’t just be aiming to make finals. “We want to try and win it. We are good enough to beat any team.” The Springers had the bye this week, and Kelly said it had come at the perfect time. Coming off one of their two losses, the Springers have regrouped with a tough finish to the season. “We play PEGS who are top of the table and then we play ECHO who is around us on the ladder. “We’ll see where we stack up. “They won’t have any easy games against us.” Tara Murray

Cobra captain caps super season with 100th game

Abbey Bertram is set to become the first female player to notch up 100 games for Bacchus Marsh. (Supplied)

Abbey Bertram is set to make history this weekend when she steps on to the football field for Bacchus Marsh. Bertram, who was part of the club’s first girls’ youth league side before joining the women’s team, will become the first female to play 100 games at the club. For the 23-year-old, the milestone is exciting – if a little unexpected. “It’s just come up,” she said. “I didn’t think about how many games I had played as we play short seasons. One hundred games seems a bit far fetched.” For her 100th game this weekend, she will join the Cobras as they face Gisborne in an AFL Goldfields women’s elimination final. Bertram doesn’t come from the typical background of having always wanted to play the sport. In fact, she used to get bored by half-time when watching a game. She said it was the small things – like getting the ball to spin correctly and hitting a teammate

with a pass – that made her appreciate the sport, which she took up in 2012. “I did athletics as a kid and was looking for another sport,” she said. “Some of the girls were going to start playing footy and I thought, ‘That sounds like a fun thing to do’. “I really enjoy it and I can now watch a game an understand.” Bertram said it was satisfying to have been part of the Cobras’ first youth league and women’s teams. As well as playing 100 games for the Cobras, Bertram has taken the next step – playing VFLW as part of Geelong’s first squad. While she’s focusing on playing with the Cobras for now, with university commitments, it’s something she might look at again. “The VFLW is very different to Bacchus Marsh,” she said. “A lot harder and you have to dedicate yourself more. “It’s one of the best experiences of my football career. I would like to go back there.”

Earlier this year, Bertram captained an AFL Goldfields representative side that played against the VAFA. She said that was an honour and a complete shock, having missed some of the training due to university. Bertram, who captains the Cobras, was expected to play game 100 last Sunday. But Carisbrook forfeited, meaning the milestone had to be postponed a week. The four points from the forfeit, however, were enough to seal a finals spot for the Cobras, who finished the regular season in fifth. Bertram said the season had taken the playing group by surprise. “We’ve done a lot better than people expected,” she said. “We lost a lot of players and we’ve got a lot of players who have never played football before. “We’re doing 10 times better than we thought we would. As a captain it is a great reward.” Tara Murray

Melton made it three wins in a row by beating Sunbury Lions. The Bloods kicked the only five goals of the first half to get out to a 37-point lead at the main break. That would be a match-winning lead, with the Bloods winning 6.13 (49)-3.13 (31) despite not kicking a goal in the final quarter. Mark Orr kicked three goals for the Bloods. Darley was also on the winners’ list after beating North Ballarat City. Melton South and Bacchus Marsh lost.

Rockbank is in the box seat for a finals spot. The Rams, who beat Melton Centrals 42-34 on Saturday, are sixth heading into the final round. They are two points clear of Riddell. Both sides have tough asks ahead of them, with the Rams facing top side Rupertswood and Riddell playing fourth-placed Romsey. Diggers Rest, which has the bye in the final round, will finish the regular season in fifth place. For more on Rockbank’s finals hopes, go to www. starweekly.com.au/sports

Georgies on a rampage

Melton Centrals passed their tally of wins from last season with victory against Rockbank on Saturday. Centrals dominated on the scoreboard, with 49 scoring shots on the way to a 23.26 (164)-0.0 (0) win. Dylan Weir kicked seven goals and Linton Hogan was named Centrals’ best. Diggers Rest had a good 13.9 (87)-5.7 (37) win against Woodend-Hesket. Alec Del Papa, who kicked two goals, was named the Burras’ best. The Burras are second heading into the final round.

Caroline Springs George Cross’ Peter Deng moves in to tackle Banyule City’s Thomas Andrews. (Luke Hemer)

Caroline Springs George Cross’ hot form has continued with a strong win against Banyule City in FFV state league 1 north-west on Saturday in chilly and wet conditions. In the only game played in that division in the catch-up round, it was one that the Georgies would enjoy, winning 3-0. It was an even first half, before the Georgies found another level in the second. George Slefendorfas opened the scoring in the 55th minute and George Tsiakalakis doubled the lead in the 70th minute. Rhys Saunders scored the sealer in the 75th minute. With most teams playing at the Georgies’ new venue for the first time, they were keen to test themselves at the new state-of-the-art centre. Georgies coach Eric Vassiliadis said he was pleased with the result.

“What I was really happy about was the way they went about it and stuck to their roles,” he said. “They were right mentally. “It was a cold one, but once it started we didn’t feel the weather. “We were lucky to have a good contingent of supporters down there as well.” Vassiliadis said any substitutions they made had instant impacts. “We were the better side over the whole game,” he said. “We had quite a few goals missed too. “We were focused on the defensive end and we didn’t concede at goals at home which we were happy about.” Vassiliadis said the defensive end was where they had to lift their game. “We’re confident that we will score goals, for us it’s worrying about making sure we’re focused in the back third.” Despite their strong recent form, the

Georgies are out of promotion contention. They sit fifth with four rounds remaining, after winning five out of their past six games. Vassiliadis, who took over mid season and has led the form turnaround, said they had one eye on next season. “We’ve restructured things and worked on the culture at the club,” he said. “We’ve playing strong football and we want to go to the next level next year. “We’ve done a lot of good work and the group has responded beautifully. “We want to celebrate footy and give joy to our supporters, who are long suffering.” The Georgies this week face ladder-leaders Preston Lions. Vassiliadis said they were looking forward to the challenge. “It’s a chance to keep our unbeaten streak at home. “It’s a huge challenge and they are a real yardstick to test ourselves against.”

Bacchus Marsh moved within percentage of the top six with a 36-34 win against Lake Wendouree. The Cobras came from behind at three-quarter time to get the win. Melton South cemented its spot in the top six with a 42-33 victory against Redan. Melton and Darley lost to the Sunbury Lions and North Ballarat City respectively. The Bloods sit eighth with three wins and the Devils on the bottom, with one win. There are two rounds remaining before finals. Melton star shoots for glory By Tara Murray Melton’s Mackenzie Reddrop and her Melbourne Tigers teammates are aiming to make their successful year even more of a winner. Reddrop was part of the Tigers’ side earlier this year that claimed the under-14 girls title at the National Junior Classic. Teams from across Victoria, Canberra, South Australia, New Zealand and New South Wales competed in the event on the Queen’s Birthday weekend. The Tigers went through undefeated, with Reddrop averaging nearly 10 points a game in her side’s six matches. Capping off the tournament, Reddrop was named most valuable player in her age group. “To win the MVP was a surprise,” she said. “I thought I played well, but overall it was a great team effort. My whole team are MVPs.” Reddrop, who considers herself a better defender than an offensive player, says the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry is her hero. “I just like the way he shoots and takes the game on with confidence,” she said. The Tigers will be looking to add another title to the cabinet when competing for the Michele Timms Trophy at the Basketball Australia Under-14 Club Championships in Ballarat next month. The Victorian teams for the championships were selected on their performances in the Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League, in which the Tigers are currently second in the VC Champ division. Reddrop said it was a prestigious event and something they were looking forward to. Reddrop is one of two Melton basketballers in the Tigers’ team, with Ella Macleod the other.

Reddrop, 12, started playing basketball as a six-year-old at Melton, moving to the Melbourne Tigers a year later. “I love playing basketball with my friends, but it’s taught me so much more, like being resilient, teamwork, communication, respect and sportsmanship, which are life skills I will have forever,” she said. “My brother started playing basketball and then I got involved. “I changed clubs to the Melbourne Tigers as I thought it was a better club for me and with more opportunities. “They’ve got some really good coaches and I’ve been lucky enough to play high level basketball in the VJBL competition.” Reddrop is currently coached by Basketball Australia hall of fame member Ray Tomlinson, who is one of Australia’s greatest female coaches. Reddrop’s mum, Leanne Reddrop, said they wanted to thank Rob and the team at Uniblinds for their support in helping get Mackenzie to Ballarat, with players needing to pay their own way. “This is a pretty big deal,” she said. “Thanks to Rob for helping out. It’s so nice to see a local business supporting a local sporting talent. It’s such a good opportunity for Mackenzie to play in the Australian champs.” As well as focusing on the championships and the VJBL season, Reddrop is entering the try-out process for the under-16 Victorian teams. She’s hoping it’s the start of a long basketball career. “I want to play for Australia one day,” she said. “My coach, Ray Tomlinson, has always said, ‘If it’s meant to be it’s up to me’. This quote has always stuck with me so that’s what I’m striving for – to play for Australia one day.”

Rare returns for car classic By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Australasia’s premier annual exhibition of rare, classic, collectible and significant cars and motorcycles will celebrate its 10th event this year, with dates confirmed for October 11 – 13. Motorclassica will once again be staged at Melbourne’s world heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building, its home since the inaugural event of 2010. This year’s Motorclassica 2019 will have an anticipated entry of 150 vehicles for 2019 on the polished wooden boards of the Royal Exhibition building. Outside will be the club-based displays known as Club Sandwich, which will see a further 200 cars and motorcycles on show, alongside 30 exotic modern supercars from Lorbek Luxury Cars. Significant automotive milestones will include 100 years of the Bentley marque, as well as Alvis, and contrasting with those British brands, a century of the innovative French maker Citroen. Arguably the most recognisable car in the world, the Mini, will be honoured for its 60 years while, by contrast, so too will Abarth, an Italian tuner feted for its performance modifications to Fiat and Lancia models over the past 70 years. Increasingly collectible, Japan’s often unheralded role in the global development of the modern sportscar will also be recognised at Motorclassica with a specially curated tribute. On the Motorclassica central stage, a series of special guests and industry experts will entertain, educate and advise show-goers on all aspects of the automotive lifestyle and makes of vehicles. Upstairs, more than 80 exhibitors will display a wide range of products, services and
