It may be the depths of winter, but Bacchus Marsh is preparing for some Summer Nights as the new production of Grease hits town this weekend. The latest community theatre production from Performing Arts Headquarters is promising all the favourite songs from the timeless musical, as well as an all local cast set to deliver a great night of Greased Lightning. Director JohnPaul Cocking said he wanted to build on the success of last year’s production of We Will Rock You. “Grease Grease is probably one of the most popular musicals you can do,” he said. “After doing all those great Queen songs last year, moving towards ’50s rock with Grease has been a lot of fun. “We’ve got one of our biggest casts to date, over 60 just on stage, and we always try and make our shows family friendly and fun so it’s going to be a great show.” Tell me more, tell me more. “There’s obviously great humour in the show, and great songs,” Mr Cocking said. “It will be a spectacle. We want to grab the audience at the start of the show and not let go until it’s finished.” The show will run for 10 nights across three weekends at the Impresario Theatre. Wombat hunting anger By Ewen McRae Two Melton locals are calling on the state government to improve protection of native species following recent reports of wombat hunting in parts of Victoria. Melanie Bond and Amy Sutton said media reports that shone a light on hunting in Victoria had shaken them. Wombats can be killed in parts of Victoria without the need for a permit but are protected in all other Australian states. “I was absolutely devastated to read those reports on wombat hunting,” Ms Bond said.
“Wombats are my favourite native animal. They only live for about five years in the wild as it is … forcing myself to read those articles to understand the issue was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do recently. “To call it hunting when it’s an animal that moves about 5km/h is terrible, it’s inhumane. “It’s apalling to be in one of the most progressive states in Australia and know that this is happening.” Ms Bond called on the state government to overhaul animal protection laws to bring them into line with the rest of the country. “The first step would be to have those
areas where hunting is allowed included in the protection of wombats and other native animals,” she said. “The second step would be ensuring that education of cohabitation is more widely spread. “I want this to stop, and I want a lot more publicity around what’s happening with these people who are being enticed to come here and hunt. “They need to know that it is not an accepted part of Australian life and that we really value our wildlife.” Victorian Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio told Parliament last week that $120

she had ordered an investigation into wombat protection in the state. “I have instructed my department to undertake a full investigation into the allegations and reports of what appears to be some very, very disturbing practices,” she said. When asked if the government would put an immediate halt to illegal wombat killings, Ms D’Ambrosio said she would wait on her department, but that it was “an offence to kill, take, control or harm wildlife, including wombats, without authorisations”. The final report is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Report predicts horror commute By Ewen McRae Commuters from Bacchus Marsh to Melbourne are expected to experience some of the biggest delays in the city in future, according to a new report. The report from Infrastructure Australia predicted the drive from Bacchus Marsh to the CBD via the Western Freeway will be the 10th most congested in the state in the morning peak by 2031. It stated the 41-kilometre commute would mean drivers spent 64 per cent of their trip in congestion with a 63 minute delay.

Melbourne’s west and north accounted for seven of the top-10 most congested morning commutes in the report. The Bacchus Marsh evening commute is predicted the eighth most congested in Victoria by 2031. The report stated that high growth across
the outer west would increase demand on the Western Freeway. “[By 2031] Melton-Bacchus Marsh and Wyndham will house approximately 260,000 extra residents, accommodating almost 20 per cent of Melbourne’s total growth,” the report stated. “In light of the nature and location of the forecast growth, by 2031 more people will live on Melbourne’s periphery. “This will increase the pressure on transport infrastructure.” The report comes after local MP Catherine
King called on the federal government to invest strongly in upgrading the Western Freeway to prepare for higher future demand. “The road as it is simply cannot cope,” Ms King said. “The government needs to stop ignoring our region.” Ms King called on the government to deliver new interchanges to service the Melton West and Rockbank areas, as well as the addition of lanes and removal of a grade access between Melton and Caroline Springs.
Protest march over forest park plan
“It will actually be Father’s Day the day after the climb, so it’s pretty special,” he said. “To be doing it side by side with Ben is fantastic. He’s been in the CFA since he was allowed to join up at 16, so he’s got his head switched on.” The trio have already raised more than $2000 for the event charities. Hundreds of locals are set to march on state Parliament this weekend to protest potential changes to the Wombat State Forest. Victorian politicians will soon vote on a recommendation from the Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) to reclassify the forest as a national park – a move that could restrict public access. The VEAC report stated that the change would help protect threatened species, and to “manage the existing and recommended regional parks for the widest range of recreational activities”. The recommended Wombat– Lerderderg National Park would cover 49,553 hectares, comprised of a large part of the existing Wombat State Forest and the Lerderderg State Park. A rally is being held in the Melbourne CBD on August 27, with those opposed to the change set to march from the Treasury Gardens to Parliament. A Facebook event for the march from the Bush User Groups United has more than 1600 people either attending or interested in attending. The plan to change the status of the forest has been a point of conjecture since it was proposed last year, with Bacchus Marsh retiree Steve Smitham telling Star Weekly in October that a change would impact on several regular users. “It will be so disappointing to lose that area that’s become so sacred to us,” he said. “There’s nowhere else we could consider to go nearby.”

Next level effort for mental health “I think being in the CFA, we all like to give back when we can,” he said. “Mental health is something that touches everyone, and we decided it was a good opportunity to step up and give it a go. “The brigade is only just over five years old, so just the three of us are taking part this year but we hope to grow it in the future.” All three men have been working with personal trainers for several months to prepare for the gruelling task. Scott said tackling the challenge with his son made the experience all the more memorable.

Three local firefighters are stepping up in the fight for better mental health. Eynesbury CFA members Scott Mulheran, his 19-year-old son Ben, and Nick Charlton, will be tackling the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb on September 7, racing up the 28 floors of the Crown Metropol Hotel. To make the task even tougher, the trio will do the climb in full firefighting gear, an extra 25 kilograms each. It’s all to raise awareness and funds for mental health charities. Scott said they were proud to be taking part in the event for the first time.

The man’s vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost $900 and he will be charged on summons to appear at court. In a second incident, a 32-year-old man from St Albans tested positive for methamphetamine while driving on a disqualified licence. He was charged on summons to appear in court at a later date. A lesson in safe driving Road safety was front and centre at Staughton College last week, with a group of year 12 students taking in a presentation to help their driving future. The interactive VicRoads program Looking After Our Mates gave about 40 students a chance to discuss road safety, encouraging them to support their friends when driving and keep each other safe. Presenter Alan Nguyen said it was an important message to emphasise in schools as students started to gain their licences and independence. “The presentation was largely around drink and drug driving, and also the shared responsibility of getting towards a zero road toll,” Mr Nguyen said.
“I think road safety isn’t spoken about enough in high schools … the more touch points we can get with the students, the more the message will stick with them. “We want them to take this message with them after year 12 and on into their lives and, hopefully, they’ll be a bit more cautious on the roads.” Mr Nguyen, a uni student, said having a peer-to-peer approach to road safety education was important. “Getting someone who the students can relate to is really important I think,” he said. “The students really enjoyed it and learnt a lot from it.” Ewen McRae
A new CFA award will recognise Victorians for bravery and service to their communities. The Citizen’s Commendation Certificate acknowledges a community member who has performed an act of bravery at a fire incident or provided exemplary service in connection to CFA or for their communities. The award will be presented throughout the year as needed. CFA brigades are able to nominate people who they believe deserve to be recognised for their brave actions and support and commitment to the health and safety of their communities.

Serial thief strikes Scout hall By Ewen McRae The Caroline Springs Scouts have become the target of a serial thief, with a number of security cameras stolen from their hall in recent weeks. The group has had five cameras stolen across four nights in the past three weeks. They believe the same man is responsible for all of the thefts. The exterior of the Burnside Heights hall has also been damaged, with footage showing a man trying to gain access to the interior.
The cameras were able to capture clear images of a man removing the cameras from the outside of the hall. The group says police do not know who he is. Group leader Jen Jeske said the repeated thefts were having an impact on the Scout group. “These are costly things to replace and that’s all volunteer dollars,” Ms Jeske said. “It’s somewhere around $600 to replace two cameras, so we’ve now got three of those payments to replace these. “This is a brand new facility that took nine
years of work and community support to get … these cameras are there to ensure not just the safety of our property, but also our youth. “We try not to impact the youth, but you can only fork out so much money without it having some sort of impact.” The group has been overwhelmed with support from the community as the hunt continues for the thief. A Facebook post about the incidents and images of the man have been shared by more than 300 different individuals and community groups in a bid to help the Scouts.
“The police suggested we make these images public, so if we’re lucky he’ll [the thief] see that and stop,” Ms Jeske said. “We’ve had amazing community support on this and we’re really humbled by the care in the community. “On top of sharing of the post, we’ve had numerous phone calls thanking us for what we do … [people] horrified that us and our youth would be subjected to this sort of constant vandalism and attacks on our property. “It’s been really lovely to get all that love from our local community.”
Father of all playgroups Dads playgroups are gaining popularity across Melton with several new groups starting up this year. Melton council helped establish Fathers of Arnolds Creek and Fathers of Hillside with state government funding designed to promote gender equality. The main goal of the groups is to encourage fathers and male carers to take a more active role in caring responsibilities and to strengthen relationships with their children. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the groups had been a huge success, and an important addition to their community. “We know mums and female carers attend playgroups in much greater numbers than dads and male carers,” Cr Turner said “We also know that a dad’s role in the healthy development of their child is very important. “By providing a playgroup for dads and male carers, we are recognising the important role
men play as carers and creating a safe space for men to talk about parenting. “The feedback from local fathers has been really positive.” After two successful terms, the Arnolds Creek playgroup is now community led, after previously being facilitated by a Salvation Army worker and council staff. Two dads share the responsibility of setting up and organising the sessions for a core group of 10 fathers who regularly attend. “We are pleased to see the dads have felt connected enough to make the program their own,” Cr Turner said. Both playgroups run on a Saturday between 10am and noon. New members are always welcome. Details: melton.vic.gov.au/communityplay groups Ewen McRae

Rockbank station ready to roll By Ewen McRae The long-awaited upgrade to Rockbank station is almost ready to be unveiled, with the finishing touches being put on the new-look station this week. The station, which has been closed for the past six weeks while the final installations and improvements were completed, will hold an open day on August 25 ahead of its re-opening for commuters the following day. The new station includes two new platforms with seating and canopies, a new accessible pedestrian overpass with lifts, ramps and stairs, a new 350-space carpark, myki facilities, lighting and CCTV.

The station will also have a bus terminal to allow for expanded bus services in the growing area. While the station was closed, crews demolished the existing platforms and pedestrian level crossing, built new platforms, rebuilt track through the station and Leakes Road level crossing and completed the new overpass and carpark. Regional Rail Revival director Mark Havryluk said the new station would provide vastly improved performance. “It’s been a huge job to demolish and rebuild Rockbank station from the ground up,” he said. “It will be great to see passengers back on the platforms again. “We really appreciate passengers’ patience while we needed to close the station for

“We’re encouraging everyone in the Rockbank community to come down to the station on Sunday (August 25) to see its transformation first-hand.” More than one million hours have been worked on the Ballarat Line Upgrade so far,
with almost 30 kilometres of track laid, using 42,000 sleepers. Construction on the project, which includes a new station at Cobblebank and upgraded stations at Ballan and Bacchus Marsh, is on track for completion by the end of this year.

Relic of the past disappears By Ewen McRae A sign of Ballan’s trading history has been removed. The Stock Route sign near the entrance to the town was a relic of a time before there was a rail line to Melbourne – showing the way for farmers to move stock to Ballarat. While the sign was almost illegible, local resident John Kowarsky had plans to restore it, so was left stunned when it was removed by an unknown person. “I’ve seen this sign deteriorate in recent years, but you can still read it when you’re up close,”
Mr Kowarsky said. “So I went there with a friend who’s a signwriter to try and renovate it. “While we were there, a man came along and asked us what we were doing and actually said he would physically obstruct us from doing anything to the sign. “So we left after that, but I drive past that spot every day – and last week I went down there and saw that it had been sawn off.” Mr Kowarsky said prior to the sign’s removal, he had approached the Ballan Historic Society, Moorabool council and VicRoads (who own the land), none of which could find a reference to the sign in their records.
Despite no official recognition of the historical significance of the sign, Mr Kowarsky said it was an important part of Ballan’s trading legacy. “Ballan has got some old routes, and the first rail connection was from Ballan to Ballarat,” he said. “If you wanted to get any cargo or stock out of Ballan by rail, you would need these routes. So the fact there is a sign saying Stock Route, it seemed to me to be a rather charming relic of the past … I thought was a small, but valuable and humble asset for the town. “Everyone I’ve told this story to in town is sad. It’s blatant and deliberate vandalism.”

Big fans of local grants Nearly a dozen local community projects have been given a boost, following the announcement of grants from the Lal Lal Wind Farms. The grants from the Wind Farms’ Community Benefit Fund will help to buy new equipment or upgrade facilities in Bungaree, Clarendon, Dunnstown, Elaine, Millbrook and Yendon, with $100,000 in total allocated. Lal Lal Wind Farms community engagement manager Tracey Ward said hundreds of locals would benefit from the grants. “The community benefit fund is a key part of our commitment to strengthening our local communities and contributing to local sporting groups, community groups, education, culture and arts initiatives,” Ms Ward said. “We were very impressed by the calibre of applications we received from a diverse range of community groups, and I look forward to
seeing the positive impacts these projects will have in our local community. “We would like to thank all the applicants and congratulate the 2019 recipients. We look forward to continuing to contribute to the local community for many more years to come.” The Bungaree Recreation Reserve received the largest grant, with $21,000 towards solar panels, while the Elaine Recreation Reserve received $12,889 to go towards solar panels, split-systems, new blinds and lights. A total of 11 projects will receive funding. Donna Hart of the Clarendon Recreation Reserve said the funding would allow them to improve the carpark. “We’re very grateful to be receiving a grant to do this work that will benefit everyone who use the facilities,” she said. Children in desperate need of foster care in Melton are being turned away due to a chronic shortage of carers. The damning finding is contained in a report which has also revealed foster parents are leaving the system due to exhaustion and paying more from their own pockets for children in their care.

six decades later, but for Mick Collins that is a reality. After starting as a labourer as a 15-year-old, the Melton man this year celebrated 60 years working for the Victorian Railways, and now sits alone as its longest-serving employee. STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
NEWS
MY PLACE Leading Senior Constable Jo Mutsaerts works with Melton Police, who are holding a recruitment information session next week. She spoke to Ewen McRae. What is your connection to the Melton area?
What motivated you to join Victoria Police?
For the past 12 months I have been stationed at the Melton Police station; however, I have worked in the western suburbs area for a large portion of my career. Prior to policing I have many generations of family ties to the farming areas of Melton and Rockbank.
Initially I had friends that were members and their job sounded so much more exciting than mine. Once I joined I found that same excitement but also a whole new life of friendships, rewarding opportunities and challenges.
What do you like about the area?
What is the most rewarding part of the job?
I love the diversity of the area, a mix of multiple generational farming areas right through to the brand new estates and suburbs under construction bringing new families to the area.
Being able to assist a person who for whatever reason has found themselves in a position of need. Whether they have found themselves a victim of crime, have made a poor decision, in a personal crisis or simply just don’t know where to turn. To be able to provide support to these people is very rewarding.
What do you think would make the area better?
How long have you been at the Melton Police station? About 12 months this time around but many years previously. I never drifted too far away. I also spent about eight years at the Caroline Springs Police station. What is it like working within the Melton community? What does an average day encompass? Working in Melton is both rewarding and
How about the most challenging? Most days we will face a challenge to some degree but I think as a mum and a policewoman any job that sees children injured or hurt pulls on your ability to be resilient and strong.
(Joe Mastroianni)
I think the continued development of our infrastructure to assist young people and families to travel to and from Melton with ease and to access sporting and job opportunities locally.
challenging on a daily basis and no two days will ever look the same. I have the privilege of having a community engagement role which enables me to work with our diverse community across many projects, assist victims of crime and youth at-risk of falling into the criminal justice system. As Melton is a diverse community, how important is a diverse workforce to what
SEE IT, SNAP IT, SEND IT
Victoria Police do? I believe it is so important for Victoria Police to reflect the community we serve. For Melton our cultural diversity is rapidly growing and it would be fantastic for our local police to continue to reflect this. It helps develop and grow understanding amongst us all which makes for a stronger, resilient community.
Victoria Police is currently in the midst of its largest recruitment campaign ever, recruiting more than 3000 new Police officers and additional PSOs and PCOs by 2021. A recruitment information session will be held on Wednesday, August 28, at Catholic Regional College Melton, from 6-8pm. Registration is essential. Cobras return to winners’ list By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh may be out of finals contention, but the Cobras are determined to finish the Ballarat Football League season on a high. After dropping their past four matches, the Cobras returned to the winners’ list with a big win against Melton South at the weekend. The favourites stepped it up to win 23.24 (162)-6.9 (45). Cobras coach Pete Davey said it was nice to see the playing group smiling again. “It was nice after five weeks to get one,” he said. “The loss against Redan after the siren took the wind out of our sails. “It’s hard for the boys to be up when they know they won’t be in finals.” Davey said they had gone into the game keen to exploit the fitness of their opponents and they did that well, finishing off quarters strongly. “Playing on a big ground, we thought that was where we could get them,” he said. “We were able to score at the back end of each quarter, as they ran out of legs. “We didn’t expect to win by that much, but we thought it was a good chance to get a good win.” Daniel Burton continued his good form and was named best on ground. Brodie Easton was strong in the middle, while Jake Owen kicked four goals. Davey said Owen could have had a day out had he kicked straight. The Cobras sit eighth heading into the final
round of the season. Seventh is the highest they can finish. Davey said while it was disappointing not to play finals, those within the club understood why. “There’s been a number of different reasons why, but we’ll go again next year. “We’ve played 39 players throughout the season and debuted 10 guys. It shows where we’re at with a personnel perspective. “The kids have shown in patches that they can play senior footy. The next few years they will grow into senior footballers. “We’ve had reserve guys who have played the whole season in the seniors.” The Cobras will finish off their season against the Sunbury Lions on Saturday. Davey said he expected the finals-bound Lions to be fired up after the Cobras beat them early in the season. “There’s a fair bit of pride to play for. It’s a big thing for us.” The final round is set to be an interesting one, with the top five sides all separated by percentage. Darley sits third after beating top side East Point on Saturday, 14.10 (94)-11.14 (80). Melton lost 10.14 (74)-8.7 (55) to Sebastopol and sits sixth, a game behind the top five.
Bacchus Marsh’s Ryley Stuhldreier flies for a mark. (Shawn Smits)

SPORT Melton Centrals still in it despite finals defeat Melton Centrals will be better for the experience after losing their AFL Goldfields Women’s qualifying final against East Point on Sunday. With many in the side playing in their first season, playing a final was something new. It was the Kangaroos who were the better side on the day, winning 7.9 (51)-0.3 (3) after leading by 17 points at half-time. Centrals coach Ray Martin said he was proud of his players. He said they had been confident going into the game after having beaten the Kangaroos earlier in the season. “It was a pretty physical match,” he said. “They had two periods of play which saw them score three goals and two goals. We had a lot of the ball down there, but we weren’t able to put the score on the board.” Martin said his side was nervous before the game and that showed at times during the match.
He said that after swapping notes with the East Point coach, it was clear the two sides had different levels of experience. He said a lot of the Kangaroos’ top players who missed the first game between the two sides had returned. “They’ve had three years with the same squad and it hasn’t changed much,” said Martin of East Point. “I have a lot of new players – there’s 10 new girls in my side that have never played before. “We haven’t been together for even 12 months. For me, they were all brilliant.” Martin said Kate Saleta was the Centrals’ best, while Nicole Martin was given Centrals’ best-on-ground award by the opposition. Martin said he was hopeful that the side would learn from the loss for its knock-out semi-final at home against Gisborne on Sunday. He said they would be taking a degree of confidence into the game – the last time the two
teams met, Gisborne won by 16 points. Gisborne won through to the semi-final by beating Bacchus Marsh in the elimination final by four points. “There’s still a lot of learning for the group,” Martin said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better year, even if we don’t win another game. “We still think we can win this week and we’re still in with a good shot.” East Point will play Redan in the other final, with a grand final spot on the line. Cobras step up the pace By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh kept its finals’ hopes alive in the Ballarat Netball League. With three sides fighting for the final two spots in the top six, every win is vital for the Cobras, including Saturday’s game against Melton South. Like the Cobras, the Panthers have a finals’ spot on the line. In their best performance of the season, the Cobras won 55-35. Cobras coach Michael Saker said the playing group knew what was at stake. “Heading into the last three rounds, the girls had got themselves in a pickle,” he said. “The girls have stood up and knew how important the match was with the draw next week. “We’ve now have three wins on the trot.” Saker said the first step on Saturday was to get the win. From there, a percentage boost would also be helpful. In the end the margin was enough for
the Cobras to sneak above the Panthers on percentage heading into the final round. “A win was a must,” he said. “To win by 20 goals is just a bonus. “We were looking at the percentage between us, the three teams fighting for sixth spot. “Two of us have the top two teams and Ballarat has [bottom side] Darley and have the better percentage. “We’re not locked in, but we’ve now given ourselves a better chance.” Annie Hills shot 31 goals for the Cobras, while Megg Collins was named best on ground. Saker said the decision to move Collins into wing defence in recent weeks had paid off. “Megg had been playing wing attack all season before she went down with an injury. “I brought one of the under-19s into wing attack and she killed it. “I think Megg’s best position is wing defence. She was brilliant yesterday.” As well as the positional change of Collins, Saker said Rebecca Power had really stepped up in defence after coming up from B-grade.
Consistency is another area that the Cobras have improved on. Saker always knew it would take some time, with a new side this year. The Cobras can’t afford to have a poor performance in the final round. It won’t be an easy task facing ladder-leaders, the Sunbury Lions. Saker said it was about making sure they were switched on. “It’s not the greatest assignment in the last round,” he said “It is better though for the girls to play against the teams up the top of the ladder and know what they could expect the week after. “We have to take it to them. We have to play a real strong game and not get flogged. “To win, would be even better.” The loss leaves the Panthers sixth heading into the final round. They face second-placed North Ballarat City. Melton had a thrilling win against Sebastopol, 36-35. Darley lost to East Point, 75-31.
It was a case of deja vu for Bacchus Marsh in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition. The Cobras were knocked out in an elimination final last year by Gisborne by three points and were keen to atone for that exit when the two teams faced off at the weekend. However, like last season, a late Cobras comeback fell short and the Bulldogs went on to win 6.2 (38)-5.4 (34). Cobras football manager Rod Bertram said they thought they might have done enough to get some revenge for last year. He said it was a good game of football from both sides. “We were in front late and the weather wasn’t great,” he said. “It was pouring rain when we got the score equal. “We kicked a goal clear [but] they were able to string a couple of goals together and stole the win from us. “They pinched it in the last couple of minutes.” Skipper Abbey Bertram was a standout in game 100, while Jessica Baker and Kellie Mckay kicked two goals each. Rod Bertram said it was a really good team performance. He said the playing group was proud of its efforts this season. “It’s been a really good year, better than expected. With how many players we lost and the number of new players we had, we probably thought it was a bit of a rebuild this year. “It worked out really well.” Tara Murray 23 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 20, 2019

Sharks’ dream run ends as finals campaign falters It might be season over for Hillside, but the Sharks are still one of the big winners in the Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division. The surprise packets of the competition, the Sharks made it through to a preliminary final, exceeding even their own expectations. It was a tough day against a determined Keilor side and the Sharks did themselves proud, despite the Blues winning 7.7 (49)-2.0 (12). Sharks coach Justin Fairservice said there were mixed emotions after the game. “[Keilor] played really well. “They moved the ball and structured up well and caught us out a little bit. “It was disappointing to lose the game, but to get as far as we did was a big deal.” Fairservice said the game was decided in the second and fourth quarters as the Blues kicked five of their goals in those two quarters. “The first and third quarters we played really well,” he said. “The second and fourth quarters, they ran away with it.
“Two poor quarters of football cost us.” Annalise and Ebony Wilkie, Rachael Jackson and Emily Paterno were named the Sharks’ best. All four were stars throughout the season, especially during the finals series. Fairservice said while there was a lot of initial disappointment, the group was proud of what it had achieved this year. “We’re in the right spot and we can make it further,” he said. “We want to try harder and want to improve. “We’ve had a taste for it, we’re now really hungry for it.” Fairservice said he would like to continue on coaching next year but as it is a volunteer role, the club has to advertise the position. He said the group needed to continue to build on its foundations. A couple of recruits would be good too. “The main focus for the group needs to be improving our girls and getting the fitness and structures right,” he said. “Most have played 20-odd games. We’re looking forward to next year.”
Keilor will play Aberfeldie in the grand final on Saturday at Windy Hill. Aberfeldie won the semi-final between the two teams. In the division 1 grand final, Maribyrnong Park will play Essendon Doutta Stars. In the men’s competition, Hillside’s finals hopes are officially over in division 1. The Sharks needed everything to go their way in the final two rounds to make finals. Those hopes ended when they lost to Craigieburn on Saturday, 17.13 (115)-10.17 (77). Victor Micallef was named the Sharks’ best in the loss. In division 2, Burnside Heights finished the regular season on a high, ahead of its first finals berth. The Bears beat Hadfield, 24.9 (153)-12.7 (79). The Bears face Coburg Districts in a knock-out semi-final. Tara Murray Rachael Jackson was a standout for Hillside throughout the finals. (Shawn Smits)

One-club Panther retires By Tara Murray Marc Dransman wanted to finish his career off quietly, but those at Melton South weren’t about to let that happen. Dransman on Saturday stepped out to a guard of honour for his 350th and final game in the Panthers reserves match against Bacchus Marsh in the Ballarat Football League. Dransman said he deeply appreciated being honoured by the club. “There’s not many people who play 350 games,” he said. “To be a one-club player, I hold that really highly. I was very humbled and honoured. I’m a modest person and I wanted to just finish off quietly and try and win. “For the club to go to the length it did, I’m very humbled.” Dransman started his career at the Panthers as a seven year old. He made his senior debut in 1999 and until recent years played most of his games in the senior side. 24 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 20, 2019
He said it was the right time to retire. “To play here the whole time is a humbling experience,” he said. “It’s not really emotional when you know when it’s the right time. “The body is old and too slow. I’m 39 years old. You know when you’re past it.” Having made his name in the senior side, he’s played in reserves the past three years. Not just concerned about his own performances, he’s stepped up and taken on leadership roles. “The time was right for me to step down [into reserves] when I was getting older,” he said. “The game sped up and there was the opportunity to let the young kids have a go. “I’ve definitely enjoyed the last few years. The two years before this year, I was captain of the reserves in a mentoring role. This year I took on a coaching role.” Dransman said he wasn’t sure whether he would coach on next season. Having not much success on the field during
his career, Dransman said it was the friendships that he would treasure. “I think the people that you meet and the people that you play with are the best thing,” he said. “I’ve made a lot of good friendships.” Dransman didn’t have long to look back at his career, with his focus turning to junior grand finals on Sunday. His son, Zac Dransman, was named best on ground in Melton South’s premiership win in the Riddell District Football League under-13 B competition. Dransman snr was assistant coach for the premiership side. While there is one game left in the reserves season, Dransman won’t be stepping out because of work commitments. “I’m off overseas tomorrow [Monday] for work,” he said. “It would have been nice to be able to play that last game, but it didn’t work out that way. “Nice to finish off like that.”
Diggers Rest has claimed the Riddell District Football League minor premiership. With not much separating the top six sides, the Burras’ win against Lancefield and Romsey’s loss to Riddell was enough to give the Burras top spot. Burras coach Jamie Lobb said finishing top was not something the club had envisaged at mid-season. “We probably weren’t expecting that six to seven weeks ago,” he said. “We kept chipping away and wanted to finish in the top three. The way the ladder is, having a double chance in the first week of finals is important.” Diggers Rest, the reigning premier, had no trouble on Saturday against Lancefield, coming away with a 31.22 (208)-3.4 (22) win. Lobb said they wouldn’t get too carried away with the win, with the Tigers at a different stage in their development. Cameron McCabe kicked seven goals for the Burras as he found some form after missing several games. Luke Delahey was the Burras’ best, kicking four goals from the wing. Lobb said it was good to get some games into players who had missed some football. In a bad sign for other teams, the Burras will have a full list to pick from this week. “As we are at the moment, we’ll have a full list to pick from for the first time this season,” Lobb said. “We’ve had 38 or 39 guys play senior football. Everyone has done their time on the training track and got back.” The Burras will face Romsey in the qualifying final at Romsey Park on Saturday. Lobb said it would be somewhat different from the last time the two sides met. “We’ve only seen them once at our ground,” he said. “We had a few players out. We were with them until halfway through the third quarter.” In the other finals, Rupertswood will face Macedon and Riddell will play Wallan, both in elimination games. The Burras’ A-grade netballers will play Romsey in an elimination final. Tara Murray
