The long line of cars snaking down City Vista Circuit before kick-off was the first sign of a grand opening night for Western United. The A-League side took to the field for its first pre-season friendly before a massive and enthusiatic crowd of 3267. It was a successful night for Western United with its historic first game ending with a hard-earned 4-0 win over state league 1 club Caroline Springs George Cross at City Vista Recreation Reserve. United chief executive officer Maurice Bisetto was overwhelmed by the crowd in attendance on a chilly Thursday night. “It was incredible, it exceeded all expectations,” Bisetto said. “To have 3000-plus here tonight when it was three degrees at one point on a cold Thursday night … I still can’t believe it to be perfectly honest.” With a 35th minute free kick from star import Alessandro Diamanti that turned into a powerfully headed goal from Valentino Yuel, Western United was on the board and on its way. Further goals to Connor Pain, Dylan Pierias and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, completed a perfect start. Coach Mark Rudan was impressed with his team’s performance. “Very early stages, but at this point in time, I’m pretty content with what I saw out there,” Rudan said. Lance Jenkinson

Council Colombia junket By Ewen McRae Melton ratepayers will foot the bill to send three council representatives to Colombia for a conference in October. Mayor Bob Turner, councillor Michelle Mendis and council community planning manager Matt Wilson will attend the UNESCO International Conference on Learning Cities in Medellin from October 1 to 3. The trip will cost an estimated $4450 per person – $13,350 of ratepayers money. It is the third time in the past four years Melton council will send a delegation to the

conference, following trips to Mexico City in 2015, and Cork, Ireland in 2017. Cr Mendis successfully moved a motion at last week’s council meeting to add herself to the delegation. The original motion had Cr Turner and Mr Wilson attending, with the option of a

third representative making the trip open to the council. “The reason I’ve registered my interest in going is because there is a link to education and I work in the education sector,” Cr Mendis said. “I really believe that I can bring things back to the community. Looking at the content and some of the issues that we do face with education in the City of Melton … I can get some benefit from this.” The council held last year’s Lifelong Learning Festival following the Cork conference and Melton remains one of three Australian UNESCO Learning City members.

Cr Lara Carli spoke against councillors attending the conference, saying the money spent did not benefit residents. “I’m not happy with overseas travel,” Cr Carli said. “I’ve got no problem with any council officers attending, as they’re the ones dealing with these projects day in and day out and sharing their knowledge with others. “The Mexico trip, which I opposed, I’ve seen absolutely no benefit to the community since that trip took place. “This is ratepayers’ money and we just need to be mindful of that.”

Brookfield dog attack probed By Ewen McRae A Brookfield woman whose dog was fatally attacked earlier this month says she feels frustrated at the lack of action from authorities. Jenny MacMillan was on holiday with her husband on August 8 when she received a call from a friend who was looking after her two dogs to tell her that her nine-year-old poochon, Bo, had been attacked and had to be euthanised. “We were in Georgetown [Queensland] when we got a call from our friend,” Ms MacMillan said. “She said she was out walking the dogs when

another dog had stuck its head through a hole in a fence and grabbed Bo and ripped his jaw out. “My friend spoke to a woman at the council about it the next day, the Friday, who said they would investigate and take the [attacking] dog and put it into a pound until it was settled,” Ms MacMillan said. “That satisfied me, but on the Monday my friend met the council down where the attack took place and the fence was all fixed up. So they didn’t take the dog. “I want some aknowledgment that their dog killed my dog.

“I’d probably like to see that dog put down so this doesn’t happen again. But I mainly want people to take responsibility for their actions and own up to the problem.” Melton council acting compliance manager Andrew Mason said that while the council could not comment on an ongoing investigation, several options were available if it deemed a dog attack had taken place. “The consequences of a dog attack can include issuing a fine to a dog owner, declaring a dog as menacing or dangerous, seizing a dog, imposing criminal convictions and more,” he said.

A different take on an old classic A new twist on a familiar tale is what Staughton College is promising as it gears up for its annual school production. While the tale of Robin Hood and his Merry Men may be widely known, the school’s new production of Robin Hood: A Comedy of Arrows is set to be unveiled for the first time. The play is the work of school English teacher Ryan Patterson, and tells the story of an amateur theatre group, trying their best to put on their own retelling of the classic Robin Hood adventure.

Chaos ensues as actors forget their lines, set pieces collapse and all manner of situations go hopelessly wrong. “It’s a celebration of the moments where things go awry,” Mr Patterson said. “It’s hilarious, silly and historically very inaccurate.” The play follows last year’s production ‘The Greatest Show’ Show’, as well as memorable performances of Grease in 2015, and The Wizard of Oz in 2013. The cast has been rehearsing ‘non-stop’ according to Tejay, who plays a hapless Robin

Hood. “It’s been a gruelling process but it’s all going to be worth it on opening night,” he said. Amber, who plays Maid Marian, says audiences should expect “huge laughs, a few silly musical numbers and heaps of fun”. The show will run on September 4, 5 and 6, from 6.30pm at Staughton College. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from www. staughtoncollege.vic.edu.au

Cobblebank’s new indoor basketball stadium will be bigger than originally planned, after Melton council agreed to the addition of a sixth court. Council ticked off plans in December for a $993,528, five-court stadium at Cobblebank to help ease high demand for recreation facilities within the municipality. A motion at the April council meeting endorsed the addition of an extra court. Council last week approved the increased costs associated with the additional court, with an extra $349,762 added to the project costs. The stadium will now include a show court, along with five additional courts. The move follows reports earlier this year that highlighted the strain on facilities faced by the Melton Basketball Association. Its president, Daniel Brady, said the new courts were desperately needed. “By the time you build six we’ll need eight, by the time you build eight we’ll need 10,” he said in April. “Our Aussie Hoops program, which is the same as Auskick, is booked through the roof … there’s exponential growth in basketball across Melton. “We’re very thankful to the council for getting us this stadium. This will help bring us into the 21st century.” The Melton Basketball Association currently has 1500 registrations, with most of those being junior players. The new stadium will be constructed on the corner of Bridge and Ferris roads. Ewen McRae

Melton Men’s Shed team leaders Robert Macpherson and Wayne Pritchard with member Joe Doyle. (Shawn Smits)

Shed shares 10 years The Melton Men’s Shed has chalked up a decade of friendship and support. The shed celebrated its 10th birthday last week with a special event, with councillors, local politicians, and, of course, a large group of “sheddies”, gathering to reflect on its important contribution to the area. Joe Doyle was one of the first members of the men’s shed when it opened in 2009, and said it quickly became a vital part of his life. “It’s somewhere to go if I’m feeling down, or feeling low,” he said. “I suffer from PTSD, so if I’m feeling down I’ll come down here to meet the guys and have a chat. We don’t have to do anything, just have a chat and be around other guys. “Individually we may not necessarily know

much, but we all learn off each other and are there for each other.” While the shed has a range of projects and activities, such as woodworking, cycling, gardening and social events, they also act as a strong network for men of all ages to share stories and support each other. Shed team leader Robert Macpherson has been attending for a year and said the shed was an important part in his life. “I was an absolute mess a year ago, but coming to the shed gives you something to do and people to talk to,” he said. “I absolutely swear by this place, you could say it’s been a lifesaver.”

Smoke alarms

The Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade are calling for residents to install inter-connected smoke alarms in every bedroom, as well as in hallways and living areas, in a major change to previous home fire safety advice. The new recommendation comes after data collected in the past decade revealed that most residential fire fatalities and injuries are from blazes that start in sleeping areas. Lifeblood of the club By Tate Papworth The Caroline Springs Football Club community is rolling up its sleeves and donating blood to give thanks for a mate’s life being saved. Mitch McLean, a member of the club’s senior side, was horrifically injured in a marking contest during a June 15 match against Werribee. McLean suffered internal bleeding and had his right kidney removed after the incident. Caroline Springs Football Club vice president Matt Kropman said blood donations saved the young player’s life. “Mitch has recovered well and has returned to work now, but during his five-day stay in hospital, Mitch was given multiple units of life-saving whole blood,” Mr Kropman said. “So we as a community really wanted to do something to give back.” Last Monday, 10 senior players from the men’s and women’s sides, along with club officials, rolled up their sleeves and donated blood. “It was a really successful night,” Mr Kropman said. “I guess part of it was to say thanks and give back, but we also wanted to attract new donors. We had seven new donors on the night and we’ve also had a number who couldn’t make it on the night who have since donated. Mitch is also really keen to donate. He’s got to wait a few months before he’s able to.” Mr Kropman said support from other clubs had also been overwhelming. “We were playing against Werribee on the day and we’ve even had some people from them share how they’ve donated,” he said. “I gave blood myself and just a few days later I got a text saying it had been used on a patient at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, so it just shows how quickly it’s needed.” Donate: donateblood.com.au

Melton South land sale approved By Ewen McRae Melton council has endorsed the sale of land in Melton South to the Department of Health and Human Services, paving the way for a new community housing development. The land on McDonald Road has been a point of contention between the council and residents, with more than 200 people signing a petition to keep the land as open recreation space. A decision at the July council meeting opened the door for a re-zoning and sale of one-third of the parkland on the street. Both of those moves were ticked off at last week’s meeting. The land is now free to be sold for a minimum of $865,000, with two-thirds of the park to remain as open space. Cr Ken Hardy spoke against the rezoning and the sale of the land, saying more open space was needed in the area, not less. “Parks connect kids and adults with nature and each other,” Cr Hardy said. “Melton South is prone to over-design. It is within that catchment space that will have high-density living. “We’ve got park strategies all over the place and we want to sell this off – I just don’t get it.” Cr Steve Abboushi said the community housing project proposed for the site was needed. “Our community desperately needs more community housing or accommodation,” he said. “There is a massive shortage for this, not only in the City of Melton, but across the state … I’m proud to move this motion that enables further discussions on this.” A group of residents recently said it would continue to fight the sale of the land by taking its concerns to local MP Steve McGhie and Planning Minister Richard Wynne.

Shirley’s brush with arts prize

A Brookfield artist has made the finals of a statewide competition, named after a fellow local. Lifestyle Communities, which is holding the art show, named the Simpson Arts Prize after Pauline Simpson, who was the first homeowner to move into a Lifestyle Community in 2005. Brookfield’s Shirley Bela said having her works as part of the show was a huge thrill. “With Lifestyle putting on this art prize it probably gives all the artists in the village the chance to show what they do,” Ms Bela said. “I thought it was a fantastic idea because there’s a lot of talent out there. “I feel very honoured to get two pieces through to the finals, it’s very exciting.” Ms Bela will be part of the show’s finals on August 28. A love of animals and nature has influenced all of her current work. “Art is the main thing that I’ve done my whole life,” Ms Bela said. “I guess I’ve always been creative, done about every craft under the sun. “I’m a kiln-formed glass artist now, so it’s warm glass that goes into a kiln that I handpaint. I absolutely love painting animals, it’s a real passion of mine.” To buy tickets to the Simpson Arts Prize, head to simpsonartsprize.eventbrite.com or call 1300 505 560. Ewen McRae

Council rejects Sikh temple bid By Ewen McRae Melton council has knocked back an application for a Sikh temple in Melton South following concerns about the location. The proposed temple was to be built on a five-hectare site on Holden Road, Melton South, and was planned as an off-shoot of a larger temple in Craigieburn. The temple would have had a capacity of 50 people, as well as a small home on the site. The proposed site of the temple is an area considered a Green Wedge Zone. An officers’ report noted that any development of the land

‘‘

’’

had to be consistent with the planning scheme. “A place of worship is an urban use,” the report stated. “The Melton Planning Scheme places a strong emphasis on protecting and avoiding the permanent loss of agricultural land, protecting the green wedge areas from inappropriate development, preserving the integrity of

the non-urban character of the green wedge land and discouraging urban-based uses in non-urban areas.” Cr Ken Hardy said that while he was supportive of freedom of religion in the municipality, the location was not appropriate and went against established council policies. “I think all councillors are sympathetic to all religious groups having freedom of speech and freedom of religion,” he said. “We go to great lengths in this community because we are multicutural and we are inclusive. “The issue here is we do have a policy in front

of us called Green Wedge. We have a policy on farmland that is well-established here. This is not going to change. “Everybody should, when they do set up a religious building, please come to the council and we will assist in any way we can to ensure you can establish your culture or your religious group in Melton, but we do not have the right to alter those policy settings.” While some councillors wished to defer a decision on the planning application in order to consult further with the applicant, the application was eventually denied by four votes to three.

Reservoirs get their fill Recent rain has filled Pykes Creek Reservoir and Melton Reservoir in the past fortnight. It is the first time in three years that both have filled to capacity, providing welcome relief for farmers, with drier months approaching. Melton Reservoir has risen from just five per cent capacity in May to full this week. It is flowing into the Werribee River. Southern Rural Water water supply manager Ed Smith said the increases were welcome for local farmers following two years of below average rainfall. “The river catchments are wet, the reservoirs have spilled and these flows will provide a good flush through the Werribee River basin,” Mr Smith said. “The flows will help improve water quality coming into spring and also help offset the forecast drier than average outlook over coming months.”

He also said he expected the recent rain to help irrigators prepare for this year and beyond. Elsewhere, the Merrimu Reservoir is rising slowly, as it has a smaller catchment to draw from. It is up to 42 per cent of capacity, an increase from 25 per cent in May. Ewen McRae

Ready to learn? Adult Learner’s Week

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner It’s been a year since Council launched its Build Melton Hospital campaign in the lead up to the 2018 state election, so I thought it was timely to provide an update on this important project for our community. More than 20,000 people signed the hospital petition, so it was fantastic to see the State Government allocate $2.4 million in its 2019/20 budget to prepare a business case.

Learn a new skill and discover your creativity by trying floristry, cheese making, painting and more – it’s all happening next week as part of Adult Learner’s Week in the City of Melton. There’s no better place to expand your knowledge than at an accredited UNESCO Learning City, and the City of Melton was Australia’s first! You’ll find plenty of exciting workshops on offer with educational opportunities you may not even notice such as the mathematical and memory elements behind mandala making.

The business case is the first step towards the ultimate delivery of a hospital that will transform access to health services for City of Melton residents. We’re continuing our advocacy for this project by seeking a commitment from the State Government to purchase the land for a new hospital in Cobblebank, as well as a commitment for construction to

It’s been a busy time at Council with many projects included in the 2019/20 budget getting underway.

Bookings are essential. Register your place at melton.vic.gov.au/adultlearnersweek Gold coin donations will be collected at the events to support Western Changes, a charity offering scholarships to help people pursue their education and follow their dreams.

I was thrilled to see that significant investment in road and sports infrastructure in Watts Ward is a feature of this year’s budget, including $2.5 million for the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Taylors Road and Westwood Drive and construction of a pedestrian crossing nearby. This much-anticipated project is one that I have strongly advocated for, having first raised the project as a Notice of Motion. This is a wonderful outcome for residents, with these works set to significantly improve road and pedestrian safety in the area. Another project in this year’s budget is the design for upgrade works at Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve. This exciting project will see the realignment

commence by July 2022 and for the hospital to be operational by 2026. Another important advocacy project I’d like to mention is the Upgrade Western Highway campaign. I was pleased to learn the campaign was recently raised in Federal Parliament by both the Member for Gorton, Hon Brendan O’Connor MP and the Shadow Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Regional Development, Hon Catherine King MP. Last week, I met with Catherine King about this nationally significant project and we had a positive discussion about how we can progress our campaign to upgrade the Western Highway, in the City of Melton. of Oval 2 as well as the development of a multipurpose community pavilion to service the entire reserve. Stakeholder engagement is expected to take place later this year, with the design for the project to be completed by early 2020. And finally, I’m pleased to advise that works on Morton Homestead playspace are underway. Works are expected to be completed by March 2020, and I for one, am looking forward to seeing the transformation of this space, where residents can come together to play, and enjoy some fresh air with their families, friends and neighbours. Nine years for Truganina deaths By Esther Lauaki An unlicensed drunk driver who caused a Truganina crash that killed two children will serve at least nine years in prison. Damian Tiahaiere Rakatau, 42, was driven home to Rockbank from a rugby club function in Melton South in July last year after drinking 25 cans of Double Jack, a mixture of Jack Daniels and cola. At close to midnight, Rakatau took his partner’s car and drove along the Western Freeway.

Court documents said witnesses noticed him driving erratically about midnight on July 7, travelling up to 115km/h along Hopkins Road in Truganina. The Ford Territory Rakatau was driving collided head-on with a Ford Fiesta sedan carrying a family of four. Ruana Panicker, 10, and her brother Immanuel, 4, died from their injuries. The children’s parents were both injured in the crash and the mother, Manju Varughese, is unable to return to work. Rakatau was jailed at the County Court last

week for 13 years with a minimum non-parole period of nine years. Judge Sarah Dawes revealed that while Rakatau has been remanded in custody since the crash last year, his long-term partner had suffered a heart attack and died in a car accident. Judge Dawes said Rakatau had had no contact with anyone outside prison since his partner’s death and his depression had been aggravated by the loss. “In the words of your counsel, you accept that the blame for this accident lies at your own feet,” she said in her judgment.

Rakatau had never held a valid driver’s licence and had been found guilty of unlicensed driving on five previous occasions. “Your driving was grossly negligent, compounded by your drunkenness,” Judge Dawes said. “The sentence that I will ultimately impose is in no way a reflection of the value of the children’s lives.” Rakatau pleaded guilty to two counts of culpable driving causing death and single counts of negligently causing serious injury and unlicensed driving.

Melton mayor Cr Bob Turner said the hub would be an important activity space for residents in Kurunjang and surrounds. “This is such an inviting and well-designed facility, with so many elements for the community to enjoy,” Cr Turner said. “There’s citrus trees and edible flowers in the garden, chickens scratching around outside, and a modern kitchen inside. “It’s a space that will encourage hands-on learning for students of all ages as well as provide a range of exciting activities and programs for residents.

“The hub will create a variety of fantastic opportunities for the community to come together, learn new skills and to focus on health and wellbeing.” Students at the hub can take classes in healthy eating and food preparation, and adults will have the opportunity to take accredited courses and enjoy cultural cooking classes. There’s also space for student support services, community meetings, and school and community activities. The council officially opened the hub with representatives from Kurunjang Primary School and Kurunjang Secondary School, and the celebrations concluded with a movie night. The state government contributed $2.35 million towards the new hub, while Melton council added $300,000. Ewen McRae

National Museum scientists have discovered the skeletal remains of a creature resembling a giant wombat which roamed the Bacchus Marsh area one million years ago. The find, in the cliff face of a Kaolin quarry, 10km from the Bacchus Marsh township, follows five years of exploration in the area and excavation at a property owned by the Hines family.

One of Australia’s largest sporting and entertainment complexes will be built in the Shire of Melton if plans from a multi-million dollar property development company bear fruit.

Melton detectives are seeking the help of a motorcyclist in their investigation of the death of Melton teenager Leigh Clark. Police are hoping to locate the unknown rider of a motorbike whose tyre tracks passed within several metres of where the 15-year-old’s body was found about noon on August 15.

They had no chance of making the finals, but it was a finals atmosphere for the Melton Bloods on Saturday as they farewelled two club favourites. Two-time Ballarat Football League Henderson medallist Darren Stanley and club captain Ashley Webber played their last game of senior footy at McPherson Park as Melton pulled off a courageous upset win over Lake Wendouree.

NEWS

New Domain show as safe as houses A new television program by Domain and Channel Nine is hoping to help buyers, sellers and renters better understand the property market. The property show, Your Domain, will be hosted by Shelley Craft and Chris Kohler and will tap into the nation’s obsession with property. Domain chief executive Jason Pellegrino said the show would hopefully become a “must-watch” guide to understanding the property market. The program will cover an array of topics including localised property news, lifestyle tips and tricks, Domain Research house market analysis and real-life case studies. “Inspiring confidence in all of life’s property decisions is at the heart of what Domain does,” Mr Pellegrino said. We’re thrilled that through the strength and expertise of Nine in television production, we will now have a dedicated program to complement out digital and publishing footprint. “Whether Australians want to know the best way to increase the value of their property, get their house ready for sale, choose an agent, learn about the market or find out about the longer-term outlook for their suburb, Your Domain has it covered.” Your Domain launches on September 7 at 10am.

Big gardens in small spaces Gardening guru Vasili Kanidiadis believes that no garden is too small to bring joy and bounty. Join us at Wyndham Grange Village for morning tea to hear Vasili’s top tips for growing big gardens in small spaces. In the new expanding suburb of Weir Views, close to a new shopping centre and future government schools, this brand-new residence has the popular palette of greys and neutrals, with white roller blinds on all windows. The tiled entry hall leads past an open lounge room on the way to the living hub which incorporates a large kitchen. This has a stone-topped island bench, a stack of storage in grey woodgrain laminate and a 900mm cooker. The street-facing main bedroom, with walk-in robe and a dual-basin en suite, neighbours another bedroom, with the remaining two sharing a rear hallway with main bathroom and separate toilet. An integrated alfresco area looks out to a good-sized yard awaiting beautification. The property also has ducted heating, evaporative cooling and a double garage with internal access.

In prized Darlingsford estate, moments from the botanic gardens and close to shops, transports, schools and parks, this contemporary gem is beautifully finished and ready for new owners. It has three fitted and grey-carpeted bedrooms, the main with walk-in robe and a large en suite with grey tiling and stone-topped vanity with dual basins. The main bathroom also has a stone vanity and neighbours a powder room. The living hub, laid with pale matte floor planks and the same dark-grey roller blinds as all through, incorporates a smart all-white kitchen. This has a stack of storage and stone bench space, as well as lovely grey splashback tiles and a dishwasher. Also on board are 2.7-metre ceilings, ducted heating and downlights. Out back, there’s a good-sized concrete patio and neat gardens. This appealing property also has a remote-controlled garage with internal access.

For much of the playing group, it was their first finals win, having only started playing football this year. Centrals coach Ray Martin said it was pretty exciting for the group and the big crowd that had gathered at their home ground, Arnolds Creek Reserve, to watch the game. “They were ecstatic to win the way we did,” he said. “They went out and performed how they have all year. They put it all together and it was brilliant. “They are so excited. It’s hard to describe the feeling.” Centrals kicked two goals to one in each of the first two quarters to open up a 15-point lead

at half-time. Martin said it was that second quarter which set it up for them. Centrals then kicked the next three goals, to have a game-winning lead. Gisborne kicked two late goals, but the game was already over. Martin said the key for the side was getting off to a good start and building a lead. He said they were a better side when they were in front early. “If we start off in front, we’re able to hold on. “So many of the girls in the team haven’t got a lot of experience. Finals gives you the experience that is needed.” Jessica Kelly kicked two goals for Centrals. Nicole Undy and Emily Porter were Centrals’ best, with Martin saying they had a number of good performers. It was big day for the Centrals with their under-13 girls and under-18 girls sides also playing in finals at Arnolds Creek Reserve. The under-18s girls got up and won straight

through to the grand final. Martin said it was a pretty big day for the club. “We had both grounds going at one stage,” he said. “We’ve had a couple of the 18s play with us and we have six girls coming up to us next year. “For them to be in the grand final is really exciting. They’ve got a big future.” Centrals’ women’s side will face Redan in the preliminary final. East Point awaits the winner in the grand final. Having already exceeded their expectations this year, Martin said anything else is a bonus. “Anything can happen in finals,” he said. “There were nerves in the first week, but they settled and they wanted to go out and play football and back each other up.” Tara Murray Emmerson Hitch was one of Melton Centrals’ best on Saturday. Bears on a finals high By Tara Murray Burnside Heights isn’t content to settle with just one finals win in Essendon District Football League division 2. Playing finals for the first time, the Bears’ new experience ended on a winning note, beating Coburg Districts 16-7 (103)-8.15 (63) on Saturday. The result was an exciting one for the club, according to president Justin Peagram. “We’re all pretty excited,” he said. “[Coach] Aiden [Stott] was vocal during the week that we weren’t just there to be making up the numbers. “We’ve won a final now, but it isn’t a grand final. We focus on next week now. “There’s a strong belief in the group.” Peagram said the wide space of Greenvale Recreation Reserve suited the side’s game plan, while it didn’t help Coburg. He said it allowed his side the space to execute well and then kick to key targets, led by division goalkicking winner Josh Covelli. He said they set the win up in the first quarter but it wasn’t until the last quarter that they were able to start celebrating. “There was a four-to-five goal breeze to one end,” he said. “We held them to two goals [in the first quarter] and we kicked two goals ourselves. “We got to five goals up in the second quarter, before they kicked a couple late through silly play. “The third quarter we rallied late to keep our noses in front and we were confident it would happen from there. “The flood gates then opened.” Covelli kicked six goals and was the star up forward for the Bears. Peagram said if Covelli or Anthony Fawcus didn’t get the ball up there, other players had stepped up. Others to play well were Jordan Hughes and Adam Sullivan in the middle, Kristian Rocci in a shutdown role on the wing and ruckman Michael Wever, who was returning from injury, who gave them first use of the ball. The Bears will face Moonee Valley in the preliminary final on Saturday at Coburg City Oval. Moonee Valley lost its semi-final to the Sunbury Kangaroos, 17.7 (109)-11.11 (77). The winner will play the undefeated Sunbury Kangaroos the following Saturday in the grand final at Windy Hill. The Bears and Fog are 1-1 in their meetings this season, with Moonee Valley winning the most recent by 11 points in a low scoring affair. Peagram said they would take some

Darley steadies in the run home to finals campaign Darley is finding form as it heads into the Ballarat Football League finals. After a tough loss against the Sunbury Lions in round 13, the Devils have now put together three wins, the latest on Saturday against lowly-ranked Ballarat. It wasn’t the four-quarter performance they were after, but the Devils came away with the win, 17.11 (113)-9.8 (62). Devils coach Heath Scotland said they were happy with the performance. The Devils led by just seven points at the last break. “We started off well, but then we weren’t as productive in the middle two quarters. “We came home pretty strong. It wasn’t a four-quarter performance.” Three of their more experienced players were the standouts up forward.

Scotland, Jarrod Edwards and Nick Graham kicked four goals each. Scotland said Edwards and Graham were the best two on the ground. “Jarrod had a lot of scoring opportunities and went down back where he made his name for himself in the last quarter. “He could have scored eight goals if we had kept him up forward. “Nick came back in after missing three games and he didn’t look like he had missed a beat. He was strong in the clearances.” Jacob Zeestraten, Bryce Stephenson, Leigh Spiteri and Brian Graham were the other standouts. Scotland said he was happy with how the team was shaping up. “We were poor against Sunbury, but prior to that we had been OK.

“We’ve been really good since that game [Sunbury] with wins against North Ballarat, East Point and Ballarat. “We’re starting to get our best players back. Key personnel who have been out, we’re now getting games into them.” Only Casey Young and Bailey Waasdorp were missing from the side at the weekend. The win leaves the Devils in third spot. The top-four teams all finished equal on points, with percentage coming into play. Scotland said they were happy with third place. “We had a decent victory, but it wasn’t good enough to make the gap,” he said. “It’s been where we have won grand finals from the last two times.” In a bonus for the Devils, their elimination final will be played at Darley Park on Saturday.

They will face Redan. The Devils had a win over Redan early in the season, but Scotland expects a close match this time round. “They have [Lachlan] George, [Orren] Stephenson and [Shaun] Grigg who could come back in potentially. “Hopefully it will be a big final and we’re looking forward to the challenge.” Melton faces the Sunbury Lions in the other elimination final on Sunday, also at Darley Park. Melton South finished its season on a high, beating North Ballarat City, 14.10 (94)-9.13 (67). Bacchus Marsh lost its match to the Sunbury Lions. Tara Murray

Burras find finals form By Tara Murray Diggers Rest’s best four-quarter performance of the season has propelled it to a qualifying final win against Romsey. The Burras’ experience showed through as they keep the Redbacks at arms length all day. The Burras won 10.12 (72)-5.5 (35). In a low-scoring start to the game, neither side was able to score a goal in the first quarter – and that would set the game up, according to Burras coach Jamie Lobb. “Romsey had the wind in the first quarter and to get them goalless, we were really happy,” he said. “It was a good result for us and it set the game up.” The Burras opened up a 19-point lead in the second quarter when they had the wind. Lobb said they didn’t use the breeze as much as they probably should have. The second half was relatively even, yet the Burras won both the third and fourth quarters to seal the win. Understandably, Lobb was happy. “We played probably our best four-quarter performance of the season,” he said. “We knew they were always going to come at us and we stuck with what we were doing and what was working. “We put the cue in the rack later on. It was then more about getting through with no injuries, which we did.” Cole Laurie and Cam McCabe kicked two goals each for the Burras to be the leading goalkickers. Lobb said there had been an even contribution across the board – one of the most even in his time at the Burras. He said Matthew Krul, in the ruck, was best on ground. “He rucked for most of the game with no Sean Egan,” the coach said. “We haven’t had to use him in the ruck at all this season. “It’s nice to see that he can still play there.” Lobb said Egan would return this week. He had been a 50-50 chance to face Romsey, but they decided not to risk him. The return of Egan will have the Burras at full strength. This week they will face Rupertswood for a spot in the grand final. Rupertswood won its elimination final against Macedon on Sunday. The Sharks had an easy victory, winning 18.7 (115)-9.11 (65). Sharks ruckman Dean Putt was best on ground. Lobb said they were hoping to get the win against Macedon this week and have the week off. “Hopefully, we don’t need to use the second chance,” Lobb said. “There’s still some quality teams in it.” The Burras’ reserves and under-19s football sides had losses and will play in knockout 22 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 27, 2019

semi-finals. In the other senior match, Wallan knocked out Riddell in an elimination final. The Magpies kicked away with it in the second half, winning 16.18 (114)-10.9 (69).

Matthew Perri and Corey Grindlay kicked four goals each for the Magpies, with Dylan Tarczon kicking five for the Bombers. The Magpies will face Romsey in a knockout semi-final.

Diggers Rest’s Riddell District Netball League season came to a disappointing end on Sunday. Hoping to make it through to the second week of finals, the Burras were completely outplayed by Romsey. The Redbacks delivered a dominant display in the elimination final battle between fourth and fifth, winning 48-18. The Burras’ shooters struggled to get going, with Kathy Dicker and Monkia Dimovski shooting at a combined 48 per cent for the game. The Redbacks, on the other hand, shot at 86 per cent, with two of their three goalers not missing a shot. The win sees the Redbacks move on to a knockout semi-final against Macedon. The Cats lost their qualifying final to Rupertswood 35-28. In the other elimination final, Wallan shot away late against Riddell for a 46-31 win. Wallan will face Rupertswood for a spot in the grand final in the other semi-final. The Burras’ netballers had a mixed weekend. Their B-graders lost an elimination final to Macedon 31-30. The C-grade side won its qualifying final against Macedon 34-15 and will play Rupertswood for a spot in the grand final. The Burras will be looking to make a third straight grand final. Melton Centrals’ B-grade side had a win in its elimination final and will face Romsey in a knockout semi-final. Tara Murray

Haval’s new SUV safety features By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Haval has added many safety features to its H9 SUV range: autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and lane departure warning are now standard across its H9 4WD range. Not only is there significantly more safety but there’s even better news, no price increases. Existing standard features on the Haval H9

Lux include tri-zone air conditioning; a rain sensing sunroof; automatic Xenon headlamps; auto wipers; electrochromatic rear view mirror; a rear camera; park guidance; and all terrain control. The H9 Ultra model adds a 10 speaker Infinity sound system; heated and ventilated massaging front seats; Comfort-Tec seating; a heated steering wheel; the rain sensing sunroof is panoramic; electric folding third-row seat; and adaptive front lighting that “looks” around

corners. The Haval H9 is driven by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine generating up to 180 kW and 350 Nm. It’s mated to an eight-speed German engineered ZF automatic and drives through a Borg Warner Torque on Demand transfer system. Haval’s seven year unlimited distance warranty applies to private users. Commercial users also get seven years but there’s a distance limit of 150,000km. Note that this warranty

is what Haval calls “Promotional” and is only offered on sales until the end of 2019. But given that many competitors are involved in a so-called warranty battle may we speculate that the seven-year warranty on the Havals may become standard? Five year national roadside assistance through the Australian motoring clubs is another component of this sales campaign. Haval is part of the GWM Group, China’s largest SUV and pick-up truck manufacturer.
