Fangirls find new direction The teenage fanaticism of two Melton girls with boy band One Direction is set to hit the stage next month. Emma Lastrina and Laura Davis will have their first play One Life, One Love, One Direction showing at The Butterfly Club for three nights in October, and Ms Lastrina said a little piece of her would be on show. “It was such a huge community, the One Direction fans, and the fangirls made it,” she said. “All my friends I made from liking One Direction, camping out at ticket booths, travelling to … see the group, so it was a real phenomenon.” The comedy play tells the story of Harrietta, a teenage girl in 2062 who travels back in time to learn how to be an ultimate fan girl from her grandmother, an old school One Direction fanatic. “The more I wrote the show the more I thought it was giving license to these women in every generation that have been fangirls,” Ms Lastrina said. “Whether it’s Beatlemania, or One Direction, or future bands, we’re a community and we stand together in that way.” The show will run on October 17, 18 and 19. Landfill bid goes to waste By Ewen McRae An application to expand the landfill operations at Maddingley Brown Coal has been withdrawn. The Maddingley Brown Coal site at Tilleys Road handles landfill and recycling materials, as well as mines for coal. An application by MBC to amend the planning permit for the waste portion of the facility was submitted to the council in September 2018, and sought to include household waste that contains putrescible organics, waste from litter
bins collected by or on behalf of local councils, manure and night soil, disposable nappies, incontinence pads or sanitary napkins, food and animal waste. Moorabool council was due to consider the application at a special meeting of council on September 30, however the application was withdrawn on September 10. Community planning manager Henry Bezuidenhout said MBC may re-apply to amend the planning permit. “Council will not have the opportunity to
consider this now,” Mr Bezuidenhout said. “We have no indication as to whether the applicant will apply for another planning amendment, but this is a possibility. “We will continue to keep the community informed of any developments, and wish to thank everyone affected who took the time to make submissions.” The planning application had been a source of unease in the community, with several residents concerned about the impacts of expanding the landfill.
Bacchus Marsh Grammar, which lies less than three kilometres from MBC, flagged moving its campus if the planning application was approved MBC environmental manager Tim Tillig said they were still considering the site’s future. “MBC has considered a range of additional strategic uses for the site and these are currently under assessment,” Mr Tillig said. “At the right time, we will engage with state and local government stakeholders, as well as the local community on these initiatives.”

Police bust trafficking syndicate By Laura Michell Two Caroline Springs residents are among five people arrested as part of an investigation into a drug trafficking syndicate linked to the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang. Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force executed search warrants at properties in Caroline Springs, Aberfeldie, Greenvale, Hillside and Kew on September 12. A 21-year-old Greenvale man, 20-year-old Aberfeldie man and a 30-year-old Kew man
were arrested. A 27-year-old Caroline Springs man, who is alleged to be an office bearer of the Comancheros, and a 25-year-old Caroline Springs woman were arrested on September 11. A number of items including cash, drugs and stolen vehicles were seized during the raids. Police said the arrests are part of a 10-month investigation into the importation of border controlled substances and large commercial level trafficking within Victoria. Police believe the syndicate is also linked to two non-fatal shootings and a vehicle arson in
Reservoir in early June. A Broadmeadows man, 21, was arrested on September 4 in relation to the vehicle arson. Police said a firearm was uncovered during the arrest and is being forensically tested. The man has been charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and possessing a drug of dependence. Echo Taskforce Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lloyd said the arrests showed police were actively working to disrupt criminal activities. “The links to the shootings and arson also highlight how often we see drugs and firearms
intrinsically linked within these organised crime groups,” he said. “Ultimately, this is a syndicate who have caused immense harm within Victoria.” Police and Australian Border Force have previously made a number of seizures as part of the investigation, including 1.975 tonnes of 1,4 Butanediol; 100 kilograms of P2P, a pre-cursor chemical used in the manufacture of methyl-amphetamine and amphetamine; and more than 100kg of ketamine and analogue narcotics, which mirror the effects of amphetamine-based substances.
Put your project on council radar

Holiday program packs a punch Local children have the chance to put their best foot forward these school holidays, with a special mixed martial arts holiday program. The Gladiator MMA studio is running introductory classes throughout the school holidays, and owner Glenn Cassar said they were always a hit. “Every school holidays we do this, and we always get a pretty good uptake,” he said. “So we start off with half an hour of Muay Thai, which is a form of kick boxing, and then
we move over to do a jiu jitsu and an MMA session. “So it touches on basically everything that we offer, but we keep it fun while we teach the techniques and they can get a taste for it if they want to do more classes.” Mr Cassar said while there was an obvious health benefit to the classes, it was also important to help children build confidence and make new friends. “There’s a lot of strength and conditioning
as part of our classes, so the kids get fitter and stronger while also learning self defence,” he said. “The camaraderie in the groups is fantastic. “Kids meet other kids that they may not have spoken to at school and they go on to be friends, so it’s a great program.” To sign up for classes, visit www.facebook. com/gladiatormma2018
Melton community members are being asked to share their ideas to make a difference in the local community. The council has started preparations for its 2020-21 budget and is calling for submissions for initiatives or projects the community would like to see included. “This is a chance to tell us what you think should be included in the budget, and to put your project on council’s radar,” Melton mayor Bob Turner said. “We’re kicking off the budget planning early so that all our residents have plenty of time to submit their ideas.” Community projects that were included in the current year’s budget were completion of the Aintree Children’s and Community Centre, the Macpherson Park redevelopment, design of the Eynesbury Station Early Learning Centre, and Cobblebank Indoor Stadium construction. Budget allocation requests can be made online until 5pm on Monday, September 30 at melton.vic.gov.au/ budgetinput Anyone making a submission will also have the option to present and discuss their ideas in person to the council. If you would like to also pitch your project in person, indicate this when making your online submission. The budget engagement sessions – the opportunity to present your case to council – will be held in Melton on October 8 and in Caroline Springs on October 9. Ewen McRae

Art students from Catholic Regional College Melton put their best on show last week during their annual exhibition. About 200 students in years seven to 10 took part in the exhibition, with a variety of styles, mediums and works on show for parents and friends to enjoy. Art teacher Meryem McLeod said the event was a great celebration of the students’ hard work over the year. “It was a really positive event, and a great turnout as well,” Ms McLeod said. “The students were proud as punch, and as a teacher I was so proud of all my students and
the work they’ve put in over the year. “It was great to see them shine, and the parents and staff really admired the variety of works on show.” Several teachers from nearby primary schools also came along to admire the works of some of their former pupils. “A lot of students had started at nearby catholic primary schools and moved on to CRC, so we had some teachers come along to admire their former students’ works,” Ms McLeod said. “[It’s] good to keep that connection going.”

A 37-year-old man was allegedly caught speeding and drug driving in a stolen car at Pentland Hills last week. Police detected a white HiLux travelling along the Western Highway at 147km/h in a 110km/h zone about 12.20pm on September 10. Officers established the vehicle was stolen and the male driver produced a suspended probationary licence before returning a positive drug test. The Point Cook man is expected to be charged on summons with exceed speed, drug driving, theft of motor vehicle and other traffic-related offences.

Enrolment boom for west schools By Craig Butt/The Age When Andrew Neal became principal at Bacchus Marsh Grammar 21 years ago, the fledgling school was home to about 300 students. Back then, he assumed it would eventually become a school of 800, but its growth in enrolments has far outstripped that estimate. Last year, Bacchus Marsh Grammar grew to 2265 students across three campuses, and over the past decade enrolments have more than doubled, making it one of the fastest-growing

schools in the state. “We had no idea how quickly it would grow,” Mr Neal said. “It’s been like three jobs in one – dealing with a small school, dealing with a growing school and dealing with a big school, even though I’ve been in the one place.”
The school currently has the capacity to grow to about 3000 students, he said. But Bacchus Marsh Grammar’s growth has not been accidental. A fleet of buses bring students in from all over the western suburbs, and students travel to the school from as far away as Point Cook, Williamstown, Gisborne and Greendale. “Our demographer says it is one of the biggest school catchments he has seen,” Mr Neal said. He said the school’s size meant it was possible to offer a wide range of subjects, as well as subjects with a handful of enrolments. He said
two students were enrolled in an Australian History VCE subject, which a smaller school would have trouble justifying. Department of Education and Training school enrolment data shows that Bacchus Marsh Grammar and Truganina’s Al-Taqwa College were among the schools that added the most student enrolments over the past decade. Al-Taqwa College has grown from 1055 students a decade ago to its current 2068 enrolment. Of the 10 schools that have grown the most over the past decade, all but one were combined primary and secondary schools.
Appeal for volunteers The Caroline Springs RSL is in need of volunteers for this year’s Poppy Appeal. Caroline Springs RSL sub-branch president Andy Marshall said some new faces would go a long way to helping the branch achieve its goals. “We need our community’s support to reach our goal. We would love to see more volunteers out there selling badges and be a part of helping to raise much-needed funds for veterans,” he said. “We would welcome the support of anyone who has an hour or two of their time to donate to the appeal. This could involve helping us pack poppies into trays, dropping our Poppy Appeal boxes off at local businesses or helping us sell poppies for an hour or two at the local shops.” Membership officer Peter Burquest said extra hands will ease the load on current volunteers. “We’re thinking even if we only got another
half a dozen to a dozen people to give us a hand, it would really help make a difference,” Mr Burquest said. “We’ve got enough to do the drive, but we risk burning people out if we don’t have a few more numbers.” He said finding volunteers to help out had been a challenge in previous years. “It’s been a problem to cover the areas we’d like to, so we’re pretty limited in what we can do. “So this year we’re looking for a few people to give us an extra hand to reach our goal. That would great.” To volunteer call: 9307 8072 Tate Papworth Robert Matthewman and Peter Burquest from the Caroline Springs RSL. (Joe Mastroianni)

Cancer Council hotline goes cold By Ewen McRae The Cancer Council is urging locals affected by cancer to reach out for support, with research showing less than one in four cancer sufferers are using their hotline. On average, 455 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Melton – last year just 93 contacted the Cancer Council for information and support. In Moorabool the numbers are even lower, with just 33 of the 178 people diagnosed with
cancer using the hotline. The Cancer Council said its 13 11 20 nurses act as navigators and educators, enabling people to better understand their situation and the support options available to them. Head of support services Katherine Lane said it was important that those living with or caring for someone with cancer made use of the support services available. “Last year, 45 per cent of people who contacted 13 11 20 had cancer themselves, but many people who used our service did not, with
26 per cent being a carer or family member of someone with cancer, and 21 per cent general members of the public,” Ms Lane said. “We also have many health professionals who contact us for information or to inquire about support for their patients. “Whatever your situation, our nurses can provide emotional and practical support, can talk about the effects of specific types of cancer and explain what will happen during processes like chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other cancer treatments, or can link you with our
wider range of support programs. “You may like someone to simply have a chat with and to listen – that can be just as helpful as anything.” The Cancer Council said it received more than 11,000 requests for support from people in Victoria last year, with the most common calls about practical issues (31 per cent), cancer treatment and management (18 per cent), early detection, screening and symptoms (17 per cent) and psychological or emotional support (15 per cent).
Focus on mental health Brookside College was awash with yellow last week, as the school came together to talk about mental health as part of R U OK Day. The national day encourages people to start a conversation about mental health and looking after your mates. College assistant principal Keda Meagher said it was a positive event. “It was a huge success, I’ve never seen R U OK Day done so well in a workplace before,” Ms Meagher said. “Our welfare team put on a breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea for staff, and we had a number of activities built into the curriculum for the week, spreading awareness around mental health. “We spoke a lot about encouraging people to talk openly about mental health, and showing support for looking after each other.” Ms Meagher said while the day itself was an important part of the school calendar, the messages of the day were re-enforced
throughout the year. “Our school is very dedicated to raising awareness of mental health and wellbeing, and we have a really strong support network all year for our students,” she said. “It’s not about one day, or a week, it’s part of our school culture. But it is good to have a week where we celebrate the good work that we’re doing and help the students understand that this is an intiative beyond just school. “It’s something that’s going to exist in their lives and out in the community, and they should be proud of where they’re already at and the understandings they’ve developed.” Ewen McRae

reasons to get outdoors, with works under way on two new recreation spaces. Bloomsbury Drive Reserve and Morton Homestead will have new playground equipment installed, picnic and barbecue facilities and landscaping. Bloomsbury Drive Reserve will also have a quarter basketball court, while a special feature at Morton Homestead will be a community garden, which the Taylors Hill Men’s Shed will help look after. Melton mayor Bob Turner and local MP Natalie Hutchins turned the first sod at the two sites recently. Cr Turner said he was excited to see the projects come to fruition.
“It’s really exciting to begin two more projects that will connect people and encourage outdoor activity in the City of Melton,” Cr Turner said. “Early next year, these spaces will be ready for residents and visitors alike to run and play, garden, and share picnics and barbecues.” The state government provided $265,000 to the Morton Homestead site and $405,000 to the Bloomsbury Reserve site, both from the Growing Suburbs Fund. The council matched the funds for both projects. The Bloomsbury Drive Reserve development is expected to be complete by March 2020 and Morton Homestead by February 2020. Ewen McRae

This modern abode in a family-oriented neighbourhood, close to schools of all levels, parks and shopping precinct, will have much enticement for first-home buyers, downsizers and investors alike. Surrounding landscaping has been recently completed, while the house has high-level presentation and a colour palette of greys in wall paint, floor tiles and carpet. Roller blinds or sheers on windows match the white trims and everything sparkles. Three of the four fitted bedrooms are along the entry hall, including the main with walk-in robe and en suite. The remaining bedroom shares a rear hallway with the laundry, main bathroom and separate toilet. The expansive living domain at entry hall’s end includes the kitchen, which has pale timber-look cabinetry, grey splashback tiles, and gas cooktop, underbench oven and dishwasher, as well as a microwave nook. The carpeted sitting area within the living domain has a glass slider to a concrete patio, the spot for a future pergola. It’s surrounded by a mulched yard, with plantings in a rock-strewn garden along the fence. High ceilings and heating and cooling are along for the ride, and the remote-controlled garage has internal access via the entry hall. Kurunjang primary and secondary college are about six minutes away by car, as is the main shopping precinct.

SPORT Titans end seven year drought to claim the title North Western Titans’ foray into the Geelong Baseball Association proved to be a fruitful one, with the Titans claiming the B-reserve premiership on Saturday. In their first season in the competition the Titans entered the grand final against Deakin as favourites, having claimed the minor premiership. The Titans started slowly, with Deakin taking an early lead scoring one run in the first inning. But it didn’t take the Titans long to level the scores, scoring their first run in the second. From then on, it was all the Titans. They scored four runs in the third inning and opened the game up. They ramped it up in the fourth with five runs and eventually came away with a 13-2 win. Titans president and team member Danny Haymes said it was a massive achievement for the club. “It is fantastic,” he said. “It has been seven years since we have won one.
“They got ahead early and we didn’t panic. The lower order got us going and the top order followed after that. “Everyone contributed and I’m really proud of the team.” Michael Nash was outstanding, with three hits from three attempts, with runs being scored on each of them. Haymes, Scott Sell and Cameron Wilson also managed multiple hits. Ryan Tompkins did the job on the mound, pitching the whole game. He allowed just five hits across five innings, resulting in two runs while striking out eight batters and no walks. Haymes said it took a little bit to digest the win, having won it so easy and with the result sealed so early in the game. The Titans weren’t at full strength, making the win even more impressive. He said they couldn’t have asked for any more from the group, as they put the pressure
on in the field and when running between bases. The premiership comes after the Titans were promoted early in the season, having had an instant impact in the lower division. Haymes said they hoped this would help them heading into summer league. Players from both the men’s and women’s teams were part of the premiership side. They will again field men’s and women’s teams, along with juniors. The summer league competition starts next weekend. “Summer is a lot harder,” Haymes said. “We’re pretty happy with what we have achieved. “We went into the competition with the focus on developing players. “The growth of the group has been really good.” Tara Murray

Lakers’ final heartache By Tara Murray Caroline Springs’ premiership dreams ended in heartache with Spotswood proving too good in the Western Region Football League Women’s grand final on Saturday night. Both sides were looking to win their first premiership and they turned on a show for the fans. Both sides had moments of brilliance, with the Lakers leading early in the last quarter. The Wolves’ class showed through late, kicking the last two goals of the game to seal the premiership. The final score was 5.9 (39)-4.4 (28). Lakers coach Colin Clohesy said in the end they were beaten by a better team. “They were the better team throughout the year and they were the better team on the day,” he said. “We can put our heads down on our pillows after the game and know that we gave everything. “We put on a bit of a show for the WRFL and 18 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 17, 2019
I’m happy with that. “I don’t like coming second, but it’s better than third or fourth. “I’m proud of everyone.” Clohesy said it was a contested game with both sides throwing numbers around the ball. Neither side was able to score a goal in the first quarter, before the Wolves opened up a 15-point lead at the main break. Having come from behind in their preliminary final, the Lakers certainly weren’t out of it. The margin was back to three points at three-quarter time, with the Lakers taking the lead for the first time early in the last quarter. Clohesy said that’s when the Wolves’ class showed through. “They torched us,” he said. “Their A-graders stood up and they had four or five extra A-graders. We were beaten by a better team.” It was all single goalkickers for the Lakers, with Alexandra Fato named their best. Clohsey said Jessica Kalmar had her best game for the season, while Destiny Eustace was
outstanding. “We played our best footy at the end of the season, not the start, which was a pleasing thing.” It’s a second straight year the Lakers have finished runners-up, last year losing to a raging Manor Lakes juggernaut. Clohesy said the competition had improved since last season. He said whether they had a successful season would be told by the number of players who return next season. “It’s not all about premierships, it’s about building a good place and see how we grow the program,” he said. Clohesy said they would love to field two sides next season, to help the progression of the juniors into senior football. Meanwhile, three Lakers players were named in the league’s team of the year. Fato, who was named captain of the team, was named in the centre, while Caitlin Pretty was named in a forward pocked. Krystyn Raymundo was named on the bench.
Heath Scotland has stepped down as Darley coach as he moves into the AFL coaching ranks. Scotland will join North Melbourne next season as a development coach, working with the first to fourth year players in the forward line. The move to the Kangaroos in a full-time role means Scotland will no longer coach the Devils, having been in charge for three years. Scotland said he had always wanted to get back into the AFL coaching ranks at some point and was excited by the opportunity. It was a former teammate, new Kangaroos coach Rhyce Shaw, that got in touch and got the ball rolling. “I’m really excited about the opportunity,” he said. “I’m ready to get down and dirty and get some more coaching experience. “I met the coaching staff this morning and they are a close-knit group.” Scotland said he leaves Darley with a heavy heart, but will remain involved with the club, even if just as a supporter. He said the club had done more for him throughout his whole career than what he had done for them. “It’s a tough call,” he said. “Of all the clubs I’ve been involved in, no club has been as good as Darley. The people involved there are first class. “It’s sad to leave there. I’m being a little selfish taking my football experience to the next level. “The club has supported me as a kid coming up as a player and coming out of the game.” The move also ends Scotland’s playing career. Scotland said one of the biggest highlights at the Devils was the 2017 season during which the club won both seniors and reserves premierships, both against arch rival Bacchus Marsh. He said it was disappointing to finish the way they did this season – knocked out in the first week of finals. But he said long term, they were in a good position. Tara Murray

Grand final heartache continues for Diggers Rest It was third time unlucky for Diggers Rest as it fell to Rupertswood again in the Riddell District Netball League C-grade grand final. Having lost to Rupertswood the past two years at this point of the season, including in overtime last year, the Burras were hoping to make it third time lucky. The Burras entered the match as favourites, having won the semi-final clash between the two teams earlier in the finals series. But come grand final day, it would be a different story with the Sharks coming out on top. It was a close first quarter, before the young Sharks line-up took control of the game in the second quarter. The Sharks won the second quarter eight to two, to lead by eight goals at the main break. The Burras threw everything at the Sharks in the third quarter to try and get back into the game, but could only reduce the margin by two goals. Having held off the Burras momentum, the young Sharks finished it in style, winning 33-20.
Brooke Seidel and Brooke Reardon shot 10 goals apiece for the Burras, shooting at 80 per cent between them. It’s a fourth straight C-grade premiership for Rupertswood. The grand final day was certainly one that will be remembered by the Sharks, who had all seven football and netball teams in grand finals. They came away with five premierships, including the two they wanted most, the A-grade netball and senior football. The A-grade netball was a thriller, with the Sharks beating Macedon by one goal. It was a close game all day, with no more than four goals separating the two teams. Macedon was in front for most of the match, before the Sharks found something extra in the last quarter to snatch the win. Matilda Elliot was named best on court. It’s the first A-grade netball premiership for the Sharks, who also won the under-19s in a one-sided match against Macedon. Romsey caused the upset of the day, ending the Sharks’ run of five premierships in a row in B-grade, winning in overtime.
In the football, Rupertswood won the seniors and under-19s. The seniors was all but over at half-time, with the Sharks leading by 48 points, They were able to continue on in the second half, winning 21.10 (136)-8.3 (51). Nick Grigg kicked seven goals and was awarded the best on ground medal. In the Under 19s, the Sharks defeated Woodend-Hesket, 7.8 (50)-4.10 (34). In the reserves, Wallan defeated Rupertswood, 9.10 (64)-6.7 (43). Tara Murray

Springers fall short By Tara Murray Caroline Springs fell short of a third straight premiership, losing to PEGS in the Hockey Victoria Vic League 2 women’s grand final. Having exceeded expectations and making the grand final this year, the Springers were hoping to cause an upset against the favourites. The Springers were right in the game until half-time, before PEGS stepped it up a level. Two second half goals for PEGS sealed the 3-1 win. Springers vice-president Ron Shadbolt said the 3-1 scoreline was reflective of the game. He said it was a highly skilled, good-spirited game. “The game was fairly even in the first half,” he said. “We scored the first goal by Brittany Webster. It was a stroke after play coming up the right side.
‘‘ ’’
We left nothing on the pitch - Ron Shadbolt “It was good team play and it was a pretty high standard goal. “About two to three minutes left in the first half, we conceded a short corner and it was 1-1 at half-time. “They did get on top in the third quarter and had some really good speedy play which put some of our players out of position. “They were a little bit stronger in the midfield.” Despite not being able to make it three premierships in a row, Shadbolt said they were thrilled with how the season had panned out. It’s just the second season the club has been in Vic League 2. “The women should be pretty pleased,” he said. “It was 50 per cent different team from last year, so we were happy to just make the four. “To make the grand final, we’re over the moon. We might have played our grand final the week before. “We left nothing on the pitch.” Shadbolt, who had coached the women’s side in their first two years, said Beau Kelly had done a really good job coaching the side this year. He said the biggest focus this year had been building depth at the club and trying to close the gap between their top two sides. “Development as a whole was the goal for this year,” he said. “We had some players go down into our reserves and help develop players. “Some were playing their first VL grand final on Sunday. I think it was four and they would have learned a lot.

“They tasted the high end of the grade and they understand what is required.” Even though the season has just finished, Shadbolt said some of those players on and
off the pitch were already thinking about next year. “Some women are already talking about next year,” he said.
Season over as Bloods rue missed chances Melton was left to rue poor ball use as a grand final spot went begging in the Ballarat Football League. The Bloods looked good early against Sebastopol on Saturday and were 22 points up in the first quarter. However, the Burras worked back into the game and it was an arm-wrestle for the rest of the match. The Bloods kicked two goals early in the last quarter to hit the lead, before the Burras settled, kicking the last three goals. It would be enough to seal the win and the grand final spot, the Burras winning 12.12 (84)-10.6 (66). Bloods coach Aaron Tymms said the most disappointing thing was knowing they were in the game and had a shot to win it. He said after their start, during which they kicked five goals in a row in the first quarter, things started to go wrong. “We didn’t use the ball well,” he said. “They then won the aerial game. They were better than us and they deserved to win.” Liam Carter kicked three goals for the Bloods, while Braedan Kight and Ben Archard kicked two goals each. Tymms said they didn’t have any standouts, with a couple of players “OK”. The loss leaves the Bloods falling one match shorter than last season when they made the grand final. While bitterly disappointed with the result, Tymms said it wasn’t all bad for the club. “There’s still a lot of positives for us from where we came from last year. “To make a preliminary final having made the grand final last year, you would still take that. “We had our chances to win, that’s the most disappointing thing.” Sebastopol now faces East Point in the grand final on Saturday. East Point is hoping to go back-to-back, while Sebastopol is going for its first senior premiership since 1975. Melton’s E-grade netballers are through to the grand final after beating East Point, 30-18. Melton faces Ballarat in the grand final. Cats on the prowl By Tara Murray

Geelong will be hoping it can continue last week’s form as it looks to upset Richmond and seal a grand final spot. The Cats bounced back against West Coast at the weekend to keep their finals hopes alive, after a poor qualifying final against

Collingwood. But the pressure doesn’t ease up, they now face red-hot favourites Richmond, which has been the form team in the back half of the season. Things are looking good for the Tigers, who come into the game after the week off. Besides players already ruled out for the season, the Tigers are at full strength. Trent Cotchin and Dylan Grimes, who have had injuries late in the season, have another week of training under their belts and will only get better. Their reserves are also through to the VFL preliminary final, so they are flying at Tigerland. The Tigers won’t have it all their own way against the Cats this week. Both sides have star-studded midfields
with multiple Brownlow medallists, and solid contributors the likes of Dion Prestia and Cam Guthrie. Both teams have solid back lines, with the Tigers having the slight edge up forward. The Cats are likely to be without key forward Tom Hawkins, who has been suspended. While the Cats are appealing the decision, they will have started preparing to play without him. It’s a big blow, with Hawkins the Cats most important forward and a key to how the side structures up. How do they cover him? Does Gary Rohan come back in from injury, or could someone like Harry Taylor go forward? If Hawkins is ruled out, the Cats will need some of the lesser known players to stand up. Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield were good last week but there’s only so much they can do. If Geelong plays the way they did last week, it should be one cracker of a game.

Giants step up Are you believing in the GWS Giants now? After thrashing the Western Bulldogs, the form side leading into the AFL finals, and now beating the Brisbane Lions in a thriller by three points on their home patch, is it time to start shortening the odds on the Giants participating on that last Saturday in September for the first time? It seemed unfeasible just a month ago when the Giants went back-to-back games without registering a goal in the second half, but they are certainly in fine form now with three wins on the trot. Full forward Jeremy Cameron is looking as dangerous as ever for the Giants. Josh Kelly and Jacob Hopper lifted against the Lions on a rare night when Lachie Whitfield was quiet. Zac Williams continued to provide energy off half-back. The Giants lesser lights, including Brent Daniels, who kicked the match-winning goal over the Lions, are playing important roles and that has elevated the team from finals fodder back to a genuine contender. Standing in the Giants way is Collingwood,
who are rested and fresh ahead of Saturday’s twilight preliminary final at what will be a jam-packed MCG. The Magpies will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing a Giants team that is coming off a physical and bruising semifinal against Brisbane. Nathan Buckley’s team has the home ground advantage, where they are currently on a four-game winning streak. The Magpies will proceed with caution though, having lost their most recent battle with the Giants to the tune of 47 points. On their day, Collingwood is as good as any team in the competition because of inspirational leaders such as Steele Sidebottom and Scott Pendlebury and match-winners such as Brodie Grundy and Adam Treloar. If Jordan De Goey does not return from a hamstring injury though, it will leave a lot to do for forwards Jaidyn Stephenson, Jamie Elliott, WIll Hoskin-Elliott and Brodie Mihocek. Can they kick the Magpies a winning score?

New Mazda3 better than ever By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring
out that, unlike most cars where the car needs to be in park, the Mazda must also have the engine turned off and pairing done through the accessory setting. Not a major issue given that it’s a once-off process for new owners.
Mazda3 has been a consistently high seller throughout its 15 years on the Australian market, often contesting the top spots in both its small-medium category as well as overall sales. The latest, fourth generation, model arrived here in February in five-door hatchback form with the four-door sedan joining it a few months later. The previous Neo and Maxx names have been dropped and replaced with new titles based on the two engine sizes: 2.0-litre G20 Pure, G20 Evolve, G20 Touring and 2.5-litre G25 Evolve, G25 GT and G25 Astina.
Safety
New for 2019 is a driver’s knee air bag bringing the total to seven. Advanced safety features have been added including Smart Brake Support (SBS), Lane-Keep Assist (LAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW). There are also two ISOFIX child seat anchors in the outer rear seats. New to the GenFour Mazda3 is Vision Technology which adds Driver Monitoring, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Cruising and Traffic Support and a 360-degree view camera. It comes standard in the top-spec G25 Astina and as a $1500 option in all other variants.
Styling
As tall, boxy SUVs have grown in popularity it seems that designers of conventional sedans and hatches are reacting by adopting a lower and sleeker, fastback styling. So it is with the Gen Four Mazda3. We found the rear of the hatch a little heavy with its bulky C-pillar and much prefer the smoother lines of the sedan.
Driving
Interior
Rear seat passengers in the sedan get more legroom than the shorter hatch as well as a two air vents and drop-down armrest with twin cup holders. Cargo space in the sedan’s boot is now 444 litres, up from the previous 408 litres in the superseded model. The 60/40 rear seatbacks can be lowered by using pull-tabs located on either side at the top of the boot. They don’t quite fold flat. All models have push-button engine start, electric parking brake with auto hold, i-stop automatic spot/start and childproof rear door locks.

Engines / transmissions
The engines are revised versions of the Mazda SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder units. The G20 generates 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. The G25 has outputs of 139 kW at 6000 rpm and 252 Nm at 4000 and also comes with cylinder deactivation which allows it to run on two cylinders in light driving conditions. All models are offered with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions.
Infotainment
The Mazda Connect system gets an excellent centrally mounted 8.8-inch widescreen colour screen which is controlled by a rotary dial located between the front seats rather than the more common touchscreen. Embedded satellite navigation is standard in all models as, for the first time in the ‘3, are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are two fast-charging USB ports. Bluetooth pairing proved a bit frustrating until we found
Our test car was the Mazda3 G25 Evolve automatic priced at $30,490 plus on-road costs. The sleek profile does mean a bit of a bend to get in and out but once inside the seating is comfortable and supportive. During the urban segments of the drive fuel consumption was reduced courtesy of the cylinder deactivation feature which was barely noticeable. On the motorway the car cruised smoothly with the extra refinement, comfortable seating and large boot suggesting that it could easily qualify for long-distance family transport. Mazda has addressed previous criticism and put a considerable amount of work into reducing noise, vibration, harshness and it has paid off with a much smoother, quieter ride.
