Sparing one hour of your time could save a life. The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has identified Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges as having higher than average suicide rates and it’s calling on the community to help it take action. The network is offering a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. The network’s suicide prevention program officer Kiran Nair said suicide awareness is the ability to have a conversation with somebody and to be able to take action if they identify a sign.

“It’s also about having the knowledge to actually identify a sign,” he said. “Things like R U OK? Day are great initiatives, but they’re only one day. Suicide occurs throughout the year, so it’s a conversation that needs to happen throughout the year. “The training aims to bust common myths. “It’s actually safe to ask someone if they’re thinking about suicide if it’s done safely and from there it’s about persuading and linking them to other services to make sure they get help if they are in crisis.” Mr Nair said picking up on signs that someone is struggling is a pivotal first step. “You don’t need to be diagnosed with a mental health condition or illness to take your own life and this helps to recognise those signs,” he said. “Someone might be giving away their possessions, or they might be talking about cherished times that they’ve had out of the blue. The training helps people pick up on these signs, in addition to having the conversation with them. “It’s a really heavy topic, but we need to break through that barrier and stigma so people can have that conversation.” Common misconceptions surrounding suicide are also covered in the module.

Suicide prevention program officer Kiran Nair. (Luke Hemer)

“One of the biggest myths is that people who talk about killing themselves don’t mean it and that’s a really wrong one. You shouldn’t underestimate,” Mr Nair said. “The other big myth is that asking someone might put the idea into their head. The evidence

is that asking someone actually leads to better results because it opens up the conversation.” He called on the community to help bring down the suicide rate. “This training is a short online module, it takes about 60 minutes and it’s completely free.

“Action needs to be taken before more people die in Brimbank, Melton and Macedon Ranges.” To access the training visit: http://lifespan. qprtraining.com/setup.php Use the code PBT.

Western suburbs score low in ‘liveability’ Melbourne’s western suburbs have been ranked fourth-worst in the nation in a “liveability” study conducted into Australia’s metropolitan areas. Market research company Ipsos last month released its annual Life in Australia survey, which measures community values and the liveability of areas by asking 10,000 residents to rank factors such as access to high-quality health services and education; public transport; job prospects; a lack of road congestion; social cohesion; and shopping, dining and leisure.

Out of the 42 metropolitan areas ranked by the study, Melbourne’s west placed fourth-last with an overall “liveability” score of 53.1 per cent. Melbourne’s north-west placed sixth-last on the list, with an overall score of 53.7 per cent. Sydney’s south-west ranked lowest with a score of 49.1 per cent. Perth’s inner suburbs placed first with 68.6 per cent, while Melbourne’s highest-ranked area was the inner south, which placed fourth with a score of 65 per cent.

Three years ago, PwC Australia (PricewaterhouseCoopers) released a report into the liveability of Melbourne’s various regions. According to the report, Melbourne’s west “has been the fastest growing region of an already fast-growing city, and this is likely to remain the case for some time to come”. “The proximity of affordable and developable land, combined with significant infrastructure investments such as the Western Ring Road and Regional Rail, have helped Melbourne’s

west to boom,” the report stated. In addition, the report said sustained population growth in areas including Werribee, Melton, Caroline Springs and Point Cook was “increasingly placing pressure on infrastructure, and affecting the accessibility and liveability of our suburbs in the west”. But the report states some of the positives in the west included access to arts and community hubs. Alesha Capone

EMILY AND BELLA

Therapy dog on wish list By Esther Lauaki Emily’s wish is for a dog of her own – but not just any dog. The nine-year-old from Melton West has autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and anxiety. As part of her therapies, Emily is on a two year program run by Dogs for Life and works with Labrador Bella once a week. Emily is in line for a new puppy when the next litter of service dogs comes along but, for now, she is bonding with Bella. But the program costs $40,000 and mum Megan Olive has to shoulder the expense.

Ms Olive said that Bella would change the lives of her entire family. “It’s going to be a big change once Emily gets a dog,” she said. “She’s always having meltdowns and has high anxiety but a service dog will help to calm her and stay relaxed. “She also finds it hard to go to sleep, she’s up until 11pm most nights and the dogs are trained to help her with sleep issues as well. “If there’s a calmer child in the house, we’re all a bit calmer.” The family has managed to raise $10,000 toward the program fees through chocolate fundraisers, trivia nights and tin-rattling.

“There will come a time soon when another litter of puppies will be born and Emily will be introduced to one of them,” Ms Olive said. “That puppy will help her in many ways. It will assist her to become less anxious and help her to communicate better in a more socially acceptable manner. “It will also assist her in walking outside and … encourage more positive interaction with friends.” The community is being asked to support the family through an online campaign on GoFundMe. Pollen season has sprung and residents with allergies and health issues are being urged to take precautions against the chance of thunderstorm asthma. Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton said the health department began forecasting epidemic thunderstorm asthma risks last week. “We want everyone, particularly those with asthma or hay fever, to be as prepared as they can for the grass pollen season,” Dr Sutton said. “The best way to protect yourself from thunderstorm asthma is through good management of asthma and hay fever.” Dr Sutton said the online forecasting system through the VicEmergency site could assist people to protect themselves, but shouldn’t replace good asthma and hay fever care. “Those at risk should always follow their asthma or hay fever treatment plan,” he said. “Where possible, people with asthma and hay fever should also avoid exposure to springtime thunderstorms, especially the wind gusts that precede them.” Epidemic thunderstorm asthma is an uncommon phenomenon where many people experience asthma over a short period of time and is thought to be triggered by a particular type of thunderstorm when there are high amounts of grass pollen in the air. While these events are uncommon, when they do occur, they do so between October and the end of December. Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, feeling tight in the chest, or experiencing persistent coughing. Details: bit.ly/2y1IvGy Esther Lauaki

Melton libraries need all the warm fuzzies they can get. Residents are being called on to knit tiny jumpers as part of the Knits for Nature project for the penguin population at Phillip Island Nature Parks. The hand-crafted rehabilitation jumpers will be used to keep warm, penguins that have been affected by oil pollution. Penguin Foundation officer Lauren Barker said about 1400 jumpers are needed for the project. “Oil pollution is a serious threat to little penguins,” Ms Baker said. “When penguins become oiled, they will try to preen and clean the toxic oil from their feathers, ingesting it can kill them.

“It also damages their delicate feathers which exposes their skin to cold temperatures and they are left cold, heavy and unable to swim or hunt for food.” She said 438 penguins were affected by the last major oil spill near Phillip Island in 2001. Of those, nearly all were successfully saved with the help of penguin jumpers. Anyone keen to participate can knit a jumper and drop them off at the front desk at Melton library. Collections will close at the end of the business day on October 31. The pattern can be found at: bit.ly/2Ik49vR Esther Lauaki

New hospital plans begin

Albert Peck has retired after 15 years as a welcomer at Kmart. (Luke Hemer)

Door greeter’s fond exit By Esther Lauaki Thousands of Melton shoppers would have been greeted by this face for more than a decade. Albert Peck has been on the door at Woodgrove Shopping Centre’s Kmart store for 15 years and last week retired – a day before his 79th birthday. The well-loved employee has racked up plenty of friends and fans over his years in the role. “The customers have been great to me,” Mr Peck said. “Retiring was a very hard decision to make.

“I came in doing security and many years later … I’m still here.” Customers were so fond of Mr Peck that they set up a Facebook group called “Albert is the greatest door greeter in history” which has attracted 5000 followers. “[Kmart] is a great company to work for and I’m very humbled by it all,” Mr Peck said. “The people have always looked after me here and it didn’t matter whether they were upper management or floor staff. “Thank you friends for all your good wishes for my retirement … the hugs from so many

and the littlies too is so heart-warming and humbling too. “I will deeply miss all of my wonderful friends terribly. “It’s been a wonderful journey and I’ve loved every minute of it.” There’s more to Mr Peck than meets the eye. “I managed Woodgrove for 16 years, until my wife passed and I stepped into this role,” he said. “I’ve been a Melton councillor between 1982 to 1985 and I’m a retired Justice of the Peace.” Follow Mr Peck’s journey: bit.ly/2nNHqkN

Planning for a public hospital in Melton is well underway as the government rallies a team of experts. The state government has allocated $2.4 million towards a business case to determine the location, size and range of services for a new hospital. Land in Cobblebank has been earmarked as the site for the hospital which the council and local community have long advocated for. Melton MP Steve McGhie said the commitment was a key part of the government’s pre-election promises for the area. “We promised to begin the planning work for a new hospital in Melton, we’ve fully funded that necessary stage of the process, and that work is well underway,” Mr McGhie said “The planning work is an important step in identifying the services that a future hospital will offer – and how it links with other nearby hospitals in the western suburbs in order to meet the long-term needs of the local community.” Mr McGhie said the next stages of planning would focus on initial capital planning. “Expressions of interest have been sought from suitably qualified and experienced parties such as architects, quantity surveyors, engineers, building surveyors and urban planners to undertake master plan and feasibility studies to inform the business case.” Esther Lauaki

Station upgrades on track By Esther Lauaki More parking is now available at Bacchus Marsh station. The new southern carpark, which was completed last week as part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade, features lighting and CCTV. Melton MP Steve McGhie said passengers will have better access to the station with the reconfigured carpark providing improved vehicle and pedestrian access via nearby Parwan Road, adjacent to Mitchem Street. “I’d like to thank passengers for their

support while we’re undertaking construction on the station upgrade, and in particular for the past couple of weeks while we’ve occupied car parking spaces to complete the work,” Mr McGhie said. “This carpark will go a long way to improving how people use the station. It will make it easier for people to get a park, catch the train and get to where they need to.” The station’s northern carpark upgrade is expected to be completed in mid-November, providing passengers with a total of 100 additional parking spaces.

Cancer’s rallying call Melton mates Maz Brown and Joe Cussen are headed on an epic roadtrip to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts. The duo, who’ve lost many family members to cancer, will be taking part in Australia’s 10th Shitbox Rally to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Maz and Joe will be driving from Melbourne to Townsville, via Birdsville, next week in a 2001 Ford Fairmont Ghia they purchased off a neighbour for $300. Ms Brown said the pair will participate in the tour in honour of their fathers, who were both diagnosed with cancer. Ms Brown’s 65-year-old father Derick Robson is fighting his second bout of cancer after doctors found a carcinoma in his neck about three years ago. Mr Cussen’s father, Donny Cussen, died in 1990 after battling lung cancer. “My aunty passed away a couple of years ago

from brain and lung cancer, my dad is fighting a second bout of cancer, I have friends that have been diagnosed … the list is way too long to go through,” Ms Brown says. “We’re doing it for everybody and their families who have had to deal with it – not only our families. “This is a rally that is about all of us, 250 cars, raising awareness for the Cancer Council and raising a huge amount of money. “You’ve got to be a little bit crazy to do something like this, you’ve got to have a great sense of humour and a sense of adventure.” Participants need to raise a minimum of $5000 to take part in the drive which Ms Brown and Mr Cussen have already raised through trivia nights, sausage sizzles, raffles and auctions. Esther Lauaki Joe Cussen and Maz Brown will take part in the Shitbox Rally. (Joe Mastroianni)

Bacchus Marsh passengers can also use the station’s new pedestrian overpass to get from the new carpark to the existing platform. Both ramps and stairs on the south side are also open. Construction on the revamped station forecourt, as well as the stairs and two lifts for the overpass, and the station’s second platform are ongoing. Once complete, the overpass, lifts and ramps will boost accessibility, making it easy and convenient for people to get around the station, including those with mobility aids and prams.

“The upgrades to Bacchus Marsh station are delivering the modern and accessible facilities this community deserves, which will serve locals for many years to come,” Mr McGhie said. Redevelopment of the station is part of the half-a-billion-dollar Ballarat Line Upgrade, which will enable more frequent and reliable services for passengers along the line. The project includes building a new station at Cobblebank, upgrades at Wendouree, Bacchus Marsh and Ballan, and a completely rebuilt Rockbank station, which reopened last month.

Getting the girls together

Full speed ahead

Current Australian Unlimited Championship holder Grant Harrison at Melton Weir. (Mark WIlson)

By Esther Lauaki Conditions at Melton Reservoir are looking promising for the region’s largest speed boating meet. That’s music to the ears of Melton Gold Cup organisers who earlier this year held concerns about low water levels at the weir in Exford. Last week, the reservoir was at 99.6 per cent capacity according to Southern Rural Water’s projections. The Melton Gold Cup, Melbourne Runabout and Speedboat Club’s annual three-day, high-octane national speed boat event, attracts

hundreds of spectators and competitors. Event manager Dennis Psalia said it was the first time he had seen the weir at capacity in close to 10 years. “There’s always a concern that the water levels will be too low to hold our event so this is really good news for us,” Mr Psalia said. “We’re expecting next year’s event to be bigger than ever.” He said the event, which raises funds for Beyondblue, raises more than $20,000 a year. Melton Reservoir has risen from just five per cent capacity in May to full for the past few months.

NEWS

In August, water supply manager for Southern Rural Water, Ed Smith said that the increases were welcome for local farmers following two years of below average rainfall. “The river catchments are wet, the reservoirs have spilled and these flows will provide a good flush through the Werribee River basin,” Mr Smith said. “The flows will help improve water quality coming into spring and also help offset the forecast drier than average outlook over coming months.” The Melton Gold Cup will be held between January 31 to February 2. Entry to the event is by gold coin, with proceeds going to Beyondblue.

Melton and Moorabool women have a great reason to stay in this month. Cancer Council Victoria is encouraging girls to get together and host a Girls’ Night In event to support local women diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer. All funds raised through Girls’ Night In events go towards vital research, prevention and support services for women’s cancers. In Melton, 212 women were diagnosed with breast cancer between 2015 and 2017. Another 85 were diagnosed with a form of gynaecological cancer. Cancer Council community engagement director Lyrian Fleming-Parsley said women can get involved by inviting girlfriends over for a night in and asking them to donate what they would have spent on a night out. “Breast and gynaecological cancers touch many lives in one form or another,” Ms Fleming-Parsley said. “Many of our mothers, our grandmas, daughters, sisters, and friends have been affected. Hosting or attending a Girls’ Night In event isn’t only an opportunity to raise much-needed funds for women’s cancers, it can also raise much-needed awareness.” This year, Cancer Council Victoria is looking to recruit 700 women to host their own Girls’ Night In, with the aim of raising $500,000. Ivan Chan’s never-say-die attitude and a calm head is what he will need to win a world title. The Taylors Hill resident is one of four teammates to represent Australia this month at the World Othello Competition in Tokyo. Mr Chan took up Othello, a strategy board game for two, also called Reversi, as a child because he was “fascinated” by the game. “I always played when I was a kid on the computer,” he said. “Then I found out there was a competition in Australia, in St Kilda, and I was happy to play against a real human being. “When I was called up to play for Australia I thought it was a great opportunity.” His philosophy on life and the game are one in the same – “It ain’t over till it’s over”.

Club targets new players Melton Darts Club is targeting new members to join its ranks. Committee member Richard Wilkinson said the long-standing club had become a hub in the community. “The club was established in 1964 and moved into Reserve Road in 2005,” Mr Wilkinson said. “They used to play around all the pubs and clubs. “People come here to connect with people and socialise. We play three times a week and there are womens, mens and junior grades. “We also have Melton Classic in June where we get players come from all across Australia playing in a competition.”

Mr Wilkinson has been part of the club since 1991 with stints as vice president and president. He said that while numbers were strong, with about 190 members on the books, the club wanted to encourage more people to come and try the sport. “It’s a great sport, especially for younger players,” Mr Wilkinson said. “We recently had two competent juniors make the state side. “We’re all for juniors here. We’ve got about 15 juniors playing out of this club and we welcome everyone who wants to give the sport a try.” Details: 9746 0271 Esther Lauaki

Learn something new in the City of Melton

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner Event season in the City of Melton is kicking off with a bang this year, with a great afternoon of music, street performances and tasty food truck fare at Lakeside Alive, next Sunday 13 October, between 12pm—3pm, on the banks of Lake Caroline.

IS THERE SOMETHING YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN? Whether it’s taking your first dance class, tapping into your inner creative writer, baking bread or getting tech savvy, there’s so much to learn in the City of Melton this month. As part of the Melton Lifelong Learning Festival, Melton City Council has more than 200 free events for residents to enjoy. Here are a few: GARDENS, ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY Bees, Plants and the Environment (Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 October) Come and learn about bees and your garden from those who know at the North Western Bee Club. Find out what bees need to survive, the role of bees in the environment, what you can plant to encourage bees, and a look at some local plants that work with bees. COOKING AND FOOD Dumpling Creations (Tuesday 22 October) Join Koi as she teaches you all the tips and tricks to creating your own perfect dumplings. This hands-on workshop will see you cooking up a storm for family and friends. COMPUTERS AND DIGITAL LITERACY Tech & Tea: Tech Support for Seniors (Wednesday 23 October) In a fast growing digital world, it’s important not to get left behind when it comes to using computers, phones, tablets and more. Join our friendly helpers who offer patient technology help for older community members. Tea and treats provided. HEALTH, WELLBEING AND SELF CARE Mind Flex (Friday 25 October) Combining seated yoga, breath work and guided meditation, Mind Flex is the perfect way to relax both body and mind by exploring seated yoga positions that will release tension in your limbs, joints, neck and spine. Once your body is relaxed, you can enjoy a guided meditation to help calm your mind. ART, CRAFT AND HOBBIES Acrylic Painting Workshop (Saturday 26 October) Explore your own creative potential while creating a masterpiece. This relaxed and supportive class will teach you the techniques needed to paint a simple canvas. Take home a finished painting and a new found confidence. No experience necessary. All materials are included. Friday 18 October until Sunday 27 October Visit: meltonlearning.com.au/festival

Enjoy free entertainment, gourmet food, quality coffee and special appearances from Tubby the Robot, CFA and Victoria Police. Bring your family and friends, and join in the festivities at one our most popular community events. To find out more, visit melton.vic.gov.au/popculture Also taking place on 13 October is the Diggers Rest Pet Show. Enter your pet in competitions including Best Trick and Best Dressed; talk to vets; or discuss pet adoption and registration with Council officers. There’ll be free kids’ activities and a sausage sizzle.

Find out more by visiting melton.vic.gov.au/ diggersrestpetshow Have you ever wanted to learn something new, but not found a time, place or price that suits you? Then this year’s Lifelong Learning Festival might be the opportunity you’ve been looking for to gain new skills or try something different. Offering workshops and courses ranging from cheesemaking to woodworking; 3D printing to selfdefence, the festival celebrates learning at all ages and promotes the benefits of learning new skills. The festival runs from 18 October to 27 October, and you can download the program or make a booking by visiting meltonlearning.com.au To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au

Cambridge Ward

Cr Kathy Majdlik Spring is finally here, and it’s definitely the time of year that many of us start looking for something interesting to do with our spare time. Taking part in the Melton Lifelong Learning Festival is a great opportunity for residents of all ages, interests and abilities to try new activities, learn new skills, or make new friends, with 200 workshops and courses on offer. Running for 10-days from 18 October to 27 October, the festival is another way we can celebrate our diversity and community spirit, by showcasing the wide range of organisations, activities and projects that are run by, and for, residents. As the Chair of Council’s Community Learning Board, I am passionate about lifelong learning, and strongly believe that learning can take place in many forms, not just in a classroom!

Research shows that learning keeps us healthier, wealthier and happier, and from a community perspective, is crucial in making us more resilient, adaptable, and able to take advantage of opportunities more readily. Council’s vision is for our City to be a thriving community where everyone belongs; a proud, inclusive and safe municipality, with a strong economy and where learning is a fundamental tool for realising this vision. To find out more, download the program or make a booking by visiting meltonlearning.com.au I welcome comments or feedback from residents who wish to contact me regarding any Council related matters. I can be contacted via email at kathy.majdlik@melton.vic.gov.au or on 0412 584 058.

Track upgrade works are taking place at Southern Cross and construction is continuing on the Ballarat Line ne Upgrade rade pro project.

Melton’s ready to rock in the industry as a young musician. In the early 1980s and with five mates, Noiseworks smashed onto the Australian airwaves. Stevens followed up with solo albums, multiple stints in stage productions such as Jesus Christ Superstar and earned worldwide acclaim taking centre stage with INXS. He told Star Weekly the tour was an exciting opportunity to hear the great hits from both bands. “We have all grown up listening to those songs,” Stevens said. “That is all you are going to hear, songs from your youth, and songs you grew up with – iconic songs from both bands.” Tickets: bit.ly/30Dghyg Esther Lauaki

Melton rock fans are in for a night of excess. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jon Stevens is stopping in at Mac’s Hotel for The Noiseworks and INXS Collection tour on November 29. The showcase will include the best of Noiseworks’ smash hits and Stevens’ favourite INXS songs – many of which earned him a whole new fan base from his time fronting the band. “You’ve got people just going bananas when you are playing those songs,” he said. “It makes you realise you have to keep playing them. People want to hear Noiseworks and INXS. “My job is to make sure everyone has the maximum best time possible.” Stevens hasn’t stopped working – touring, writing or recording – since he first started out

Property of the week

AINTREE 8 Shaw Street, 3336 YPA Melton: 9746 8899

Price: $689,000 – $729,000

While renovating can be rewarding, there’s a lot to be said for the lack of upkeep a modern, well fitted house can bring. This elegant property in Aintree has plenty to offer those looking to move right in, while the growing suburb is an ideal setting to bring up a family. The facade gives a hint to what’s within with its clean lines, large windows and subtle styling. The interior decor is based around a white, grey and black palette for a sophisticated style but the simple colour scheme also lends itself well to providing

an excellent canvas to add a splash of colour for dramatic effect. There are four bedrooms, the main with a walk-in robe leading to an en suite. Both bathrooms are fully tiled in grey with white fittings for a striking contrast and the main has a freestanding tub. The fourth, smaller bedroom at the rear would also be suited to being a study, child’s play room or studio. Living areas include a more formal area leading off the entry and a spacious open-plan kitchen/dining/living area

opening to the backyard through full height sliding doors. The kitchen has a long island bench under pendant lighting hanging from a bulkhead, stainless-steel appliances, glass splashback, oodles of storage including both drawer and cupboards as well as a large walk-in pantry with access to the garage. A large under-roof entertaining area is perfect for outdoor dining and is angled north to capture plenty of winter sun. As a near-new build, the outdoor areas

are ready for the new owners to stamp their own statement, although simple lawns hold their own low-maintenance appeal. Other amenities include nine-foot ceilings, a double, drive-through garage, alarm system, cooling and heating. Aintree is a growing community roughly halfway between Melton and Caroline Springs shopping centres and has excellent open spaces and plenty of walking tracks. Also close to the Western Highway. SPORT Melton starts its season with a thrilling victory Melton won a thriller in the opening round of the Bowls Victoria Pennant, division 2, section 1 competition. Having been relegated from division 1, Melton started its quest to go back up with a two shot win against Yarraville-Footscray 2. The teams split the rinks two apiece, with Melton winning 75 (14)-73 (4). Melton skip Conrad Dawson said they needed to hold their composure late. “It was a nail-biter in the end,” he said. “We were in front all day and YarravilleFootscray really pushed towards the end. “It took them a while to get used to our green, as we made the most of home grown advantage. “They pushed us, but we were able to hold on.” Colin Norris and Alan Thistlethwaite were the winning skips for Melton, while Dawson and Russell Taylor both lost. Dawson said it was good to start the season on a winning note, after coming off a tough

year. “It was a tough season,” he said. “We started great before it went completely sideways. The top two sides are both in division 2 this year. “We want to go back up and it’s one of the club’s goals to get back up there.” The second side, which is in section two, also had a win beating Altona 2, 83 (16)-70 (2). This week Melton’s top side faces Bacchus Marsh, in a clash both sides have been waiting for. Bacchus Marsh made the move across from the Central Highlands Bowls Division in the off season. Dawson said there was a friendly rivalry between the two clubs. “We are old rivals and we are good friends with a lot of their players,” he said. “We’ve been anticipating them coming into the league. “Them coming into the league gives us a bit of a rivalry game, we’ve been building up the

match and the rivalry, internally and between the clubs. “We’re proud they got a win first-up and hopefully we can put a dint in them next week.” Bacchus Marsh also started the season with a win, beating Werribee 89 (16)-70 (2). They snatched the win 25-21 with a five from Phil Minniti’s rink on the final end. After scoring seven on the first rink, Danny Willis’ rink managed to win by that margin, winning 28-21. In his first game as skip for the club, Arthur Dickson’s rink lost by two. Recruit Mark Godbolt, who has come across from Lancefield, got the job done with his rink winning 19-9. Lions roar with early win By Tara Murray Darley kicked off the Ballarat Cricket Association season with a win against last season’s premiers East Ballarat. After a long pre-season, the Lions were delighted with their season start. The Lions were on fire and were able to restrict East Ballarat to just 123. After a slow start with the bat, the Lions made the runs, finishing 5-125. New Lions coach Brian Wheelahan was thrilled. “I thought that we had prepared really well,” he said. “We had a few players out, but our motto was just make it with what we have. “To stand up against a quality side and to get the win, it gives us confidence for the rest of the season.” It was three recruits that stood out with the ball. Madushanka Ekanayaka, Rahmatullah Khwaja and Harry Killoran all took three

wickets each to put East Ballarat under pressure. Wheelahan said all three had really brought into what they were trying to do and did what they needed to in spades. Wheelahan said there were some nervous moments with the bat. “They are a quality side and we were under the pump, at three for not many. “Harry and Brad [Barnes] put on a terrific partnership. They were really disciplined and mature. “It was sort of like a finals atmosphere.” Killoran and Barnes both made 35. Wheelahan said the performance from Barnes was an example of why the club had made him captain this season. “Brad has been fantastic,” he said. “He’s been around the club for a number of years and is still learning. “That responsibility of being captain can see him take his game to the next level. “It was really mature the way he batted with patience and he didn’t want to leave it to anyone

else. “He took a top order wicket as well.” The Lions were without three key players in the win. International Danza Hyatt will be in town in time for round three. Wicketkeeper Anthony Taylor and opening bowler Ben Longhurst both missed through injury. Taylor will be a chance to make his debut for the club if he gets through training this week, while Longhurst is set to miss three to four weeks with a calf injury. Wheelahan said with the depth they had, the playing group was making it hard to select their team. “There were three or four players in the seconds that were pretty stiff not to be playing ones this week.” The Lions seconds also had a good win, beating Wendouree by four wickets. The top side this week faces Mt Clear in a one-dayer.

Rockbank is putting out a call to arms to help ensure the survival of the club. The club is hosting a debt demolition community day with the hopes to raise $20,000 to help pay off some of its debt. It’s no secret the Rams have struggled on and off the field in recent years in the Riddell District Football Netball League. Those on the committee are doing everything they can to ensure the club will be in existence next year, for its 101st year. Rams president Mark Smith said if they don’t raise that money, it would be a dire situation for the club. He said they were determined to keep the club going and were planning for next season. “It’s about the club’s survival,” he said. “We want the club to survive and grow so there is somewhere for the local community.” With that in mind, the club is hosting a community day at Ian Cowie Reserve, on October 20. Entry is by gold coin donation. Running from 10am, the day will include food trucks, market stalls and car boot sales. There will also be kids rides and amusements, and various raffles to help raise some money for the club. There is also the opportunity to purchase a brick to put your name on which will go in the clubrooms. The club is also still selling books about the history of the club, made to mark it centenary year. A GoFundMe page has also been set up by one of the players for anyone looking to donate to the cause and help the Rams. It was set up to help pay fees owed to the league. Melton needs to fire as Hoppers puts runs on the board Melton has a challenge on its hands if it’s to open the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west season with a win. Facing Hoppers Crossing, it’s game on after day one of the match. After being sent in, Hoppers Crossing finished the day at 7-177, with 13 overs still to be bowled on day two after a late start to play. Melton coaching director Anthony Gale said they would have liked to have had the Cats bowled out by this stage. “Hoppers would have been happy I would think,” he said. “It’s evenly poised. We put out a side that we thought would have been able to get them out. “We dropped a few chances which didn’t help. Hoppers is setting us a competitive chase and we will have to bat well to get the points.” Brad Jones, Dylan Jobson and Nathan D’antonio took two wickets each for the Lions. New Hoppers Crossing coach Jack Rhodes was the standout for his side, making 93 at the top of the order. Gale said it would be interesting to see what

sort of form their batsmen would be in, being the first game of the season. He said they expected to be chasing at least 200. “It looks like we will need contributions from everyone.” It’s a new-look Lions outfit this year with a number of changes including Ash Sweet going to Yarraville Club and neither of their overseas players returning. Gale said it was an exciting opportunity for other players to step up. “Nathan has come back to the club and it’s only his fifth first XI game,” he said. “Dylan has already shown some promise though. “He’s nearly 18 and in a couple of years will have some decent wheels.” The club has again added two overseas players. Gale said it appeared it would be an even year across the competition, with a need for players to stand up every game. “If you had said we would have been within

two runs of a grand final last year we would have taken it. “It’s more even across the board. We need a couple of players to have standout years and the likes of Ben MacRae and Nathan Taylor will have to score the bulk of the runs. “They are the key players and we will need to get contributions from everyone. “We would like to play finals.” Gale said their numbers had been quite strong and he expected a good year across the board. The only other side to get on the park for the Lions was the fourth XI. They are in a good position. Having made 188, they have Ivanhoe in trouble at 4-26. Tara Murray

Eagles soar to first win By Tara Murray Eynesbury got a confidence-boosting win against Woodend to start the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield season. With wins hard to come by last season, to start the new season with a victory was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Eagles. It was a low scoring affair, with a couple of the Eagles’ young guns standing up when they were needed. Eagles captain-coach Tristan Francis was thrilled. “It’s a really good win and a good way to start the season,” he said. “After getting beaten up last year, it’s nice to come down and get a win.” Francis said the Jensen Shield is the perfect competition for the young playing group that they’ve got. On Saturday, five under-17s were part of the Eagles side. On Saturday, the Eagles won the toss and elected to bat. They managed to claw their way to 8-138 from their 40 overs. Francis said the end total was better than what it looked like it would be for much of the innings. “I thought if we got to 90 at one stage, it would have been a good score. “Max Giulieri made 55. He’s a 14-year-old who played most of last year. “He’s come on leaps and bounds.” The Eagles bowlers were then able to get the job done, bowling Woodend out for 118 in the final over. Just two Woodend players passed six. Youngster Zach Micallef was outstanding in his first game, taking 2-9 off six overs. Jason Tardrew stood up and took four wickets. Francis said they really turned the screws in the middle of the innings. “We put a lot of pressure on the ball and didn’t let them get too many boundaries.” Francis said having got one win on the board, it would give them plenty of confidence. “It gives us the belief that we can certainly be competitive and take it up to some of the other teams,” he said. “We’ll continue to compete and hopefully win more than we lose. “We’ve got three sides this year, so there is more players to choose from. “We have a lot more older guys around the club, the focus is on the younger guys and we want to continue to give them exposure at the top level.” In McIntyre Cup, Bacchus Marsh lost the grand final rematch against Gisborne. The Central Highlands Bowls Division season got underway on Saturday. It’s a different looking competition this season, with just six teams in the top grade, instead of eight. Gisborne defeated newly promoted Bacchus Marsh 95 (15)-85 (3). Romsey beat Kyneton Golf, 85 (14)-76 (4), while Lancefield came away with the most points, beating Kyneton 93 (16)-87 (2).

Baseball

North Western Titans remain without a win after two rounds in the Baseball Victoria men’s division 3 competition. The Titans took on reigning premiers the Pakenham Pumas and put up a fight, but lost 11-5. The Titans had more hits than the Pumas, but they weren’t able to make the most of them. It was a tough weekend for the Titans women’s side which lost to Sunshine 18-1. Sunshine dominated in all areas of the game and didn’t make a mistake in the field.

Will Kennedy took out the Western Jets best and fairest award, the Barry Round Medal. Kennedy, who joined the Jets this season after two years at the Sandringham Dragons was shocked to claim the award, thinking that Morrish Medal winner Lucas Rocci would add the club best and fairest award to his league one.
