United off to flying start Western United is off and running in its inaugural A-League season, claiming a 1-0 victory over Wellington on Sunday. Head coach Mark Rudan said it was pleasing to be playing games for points, after a long build-up establishing the club in the west of Melbourne. “As a new club we’ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes to build this football club, but now we start to rock and roll,” Rudan said. “It’s been a good response from the … community, particularly the first three practise games at Caroline Springs which exceeded our expectations in terms of the people who supported the football club or wanted to find out what we’re all about. “We’re working very hard away from the football field to connect with the community.” Rudan said showing the western region what the club was about was a big focus in its early days. The club has a current membership base of just over 2500 and is hoping to double that in its first season. Head of football Steve Horvat said it had plans to open a football academy in the west in the next 12 months, and was hopeful of expanding into other areas. ■ More in sport: Page 30 Ewen McRae

Melton’s weighty issue By Ewen McRae Nearly three quarters of Melton and Moorabool residents are overweight or obese, according to a new study. The Australian Health Tracker states 74.3 per cent of Melton – or 67,725 people – is considered overweight or obese, the highest percentage of any council area in the state. Moorabool was not far behind, with 73 per cent of residents considered overweight or obese, above the national average of 66 per cent. Professor Rosemary Calder from health policy think tank, the Mitchell Institute at Victoria University, said action was needed
to focus prevention strategies in the most disadvantaged communities. “We have spent too long as a nation expecting individuals to be able to change their behaviour to reduce their weight,” Professor Calder said. “However, the evidence is very clear that this has little chance of success without a very strong focus on the environmental factors in the places where we live that contribute to poor nutrition and inactivity.” Obesity in Australia has risen 27 per cent in the past 10 years to almost a third of the population. Professor Calder said places with the highest
rates of obesity also have much higher rates of smoking, inactivity and chronic illness and are largely low-socioeconomic communities, highlighting the impact of poverty on health. “Local governments are critical to local planning and the creation of healthy and active spaces for their residents. However, they are often hampered by lack of funding and regulatory power,” she said. In contrast to Melton and Moorabool, leafy eastern municipalities Boroondara (14.5 per cent), Stonnington (15.5 per cent), and Yarra (16.3 per cent) had comparatively low levels of obesity. Professor Calder said it was no surprise that
Victoria’s wealthy city suburbs have the lowest rates of obesity. “These suburbs are usually green and leafy, with more space dedicated to parks, gardens and recreational facilities,” Professor Calder said. “They often are well serviced by public transport, bike paths and are relatively close to where people work which enables people to be physically active in their commute to work, rather than rely on the car. “People in our wealthier suburbs tend to have better access to information about healthy diet and the financial means to access healthy food options and enjoyable physical activity.”

VCE politics leaves student feeling disrespected A Melton Secondary College student claims she is being denied opportunites, after the school discontinued a subject she had spent this year preparing for. Year 11 student Dominique-Dee Jones is studying the year 12 units of Global Politics, but chose to take the subject as a non-scored student on the basis that she would study it again as a scored student in 2020. She said she was recently told that the school will not be offering the class on-site next year, because of a lack of interest in the subject.

There is always hope By Jessica Micallef An outreach team based at Sunshine hospital is giving hope to people at risk of suicide. The Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) team provides practical support and follow-up for people leaving hospital after a suicide attempt, their families, friends and carers. “If this was any other subject I would have doubled down and found something else, but politics is something I picked up at the start of the year and I was very excited for,” she said “This whole year I’ve loved it, and it’s changed the pathway that I want to take in my career and my life, that’s how influential this has been. “And this is in part because of my teacher, so to do VSV where you don’t get that one-on-one time … it’s going to impact on my learning.” College principal David Reynolds said VSV was a successful way of broadening the

“When people do reach out … there is that help for them. It’s just one avenue of where people can access support and the help that they need at the time. “We feel really positive about our work.” Ms Cross said her role within the team was to understand a person’s suicide story. “We help people with a broad range of psychological interventions. A by-election will be held in Moorabool in December to fill the council vacancy following the death of Cr Pat Toohey. Cr Toohey died on September 18 after a prolonged illness, triggering a vacancy in the Woodlands ward. As Woodlands ward is a single councillor ward, the Victorian Electoral Commission said it does not decide the new councillor via countback, and has instead called a by-election. Returning officer Mark Taylor said all eligible voters must ensure they were enrolled to vote by the end of the week. “You must be correctly enrolled by the close of roll, which is 4pm on Friday, October 18,” Mr Taylor said. “If you’re an Australian citizen and you’ve recently turned 18, or recently moved and haven’t updated your address, enrol online at enrolment.vec.vic.gov.au by the close of roll. “Remember, voting in local government elections is compulsory if you’re enrolled and are an Australian citizen between the ages of 18 and 70. “Local councils make decisions regarding community facilities and services that affect all local residents and the local business community, so it’s important that a range of voices are represented through voting in this by-election.” About 3330 Victorians are enrolled in Woodlands ward, which includes the towns of Blackwood, Blakeville, Gordon and Greendale. Nominations for the election will be open from November 7 to 12. Voting will be held by postal vote, with voting packs mailed out between November 26 and 28. Voting closes on December 13. Ewen McRae

Predictions of population pain By Craig Butt/The Age As of 2016, Rockbank and Mount Cottrell were home to about 3000 people. Over the next two decades, the population there is set to explode – a twentyfold increase, based on state government projections. By 2036, the area is expected to be home to about 65,000 people, equivalent to the current population of Shepparton. Rockbank/Mount Cottrell is one of 29 suburbs statewide the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning
predicts will more than double in size between 2016 and 2036. The growth projections have sparked major concerns by planning experts on whether the areas have infrastructure needed to cope with the population boom. Many of the areas expected to experience the greatest population growth are on Melbourne’s expanding suburban fringes. In the west, Melton South, Tarneit, Werribee West, Werribee South, Wyndham Vale and Point Cook South are projected to double in size, along with Hillside, in the city’s
north-west. The department’s principal demographer, David Sykes, said the projections were calculated using mathematical models, expert knowledge and trend analysis to provide an estimate of the future size, distribution and composition of the population. RMIT professor of urban policy Jago Dodson said there were some serious deficits in how growth suburbs were planned, particularly in regards to access to public transport, access to high-skilled jobs and a lack of cultural facilities. “We need a more holistic sense of how these
places are planned, rather than seeing them as dormitory suburbs where people commute out every day,” he said. Professor Dodson said it was vital for more public debate to take place on Melbourne’s population growth. “There is a need for a much more systematic public conversation about how we want Melbourne to be in about 20-30 years with this additional population … re-shaping the city in a more sustainable and more inclusive way, while managing some of the disadvantages high population levels could bring,” he said.
Cheese to please New Year’s resolutions may still be a few months away, but the time to learn a new skill is this week as the Melton Lifelong Learning Festival hits town. The annual festival kicks off this Friday, and will feature more than 200 free events designed to spark the imagination and help residents pick up some new skills. Cheesemaking, woodworking, 3D printing, coding, and self-defence are just some of the classes on offer until the festival closes on October 27. One of the more popular classes is sure to be cheesemaking, with Werribee’s Craig Castree delivering a fromage class. Melton council said the festival is a celebration of continuous learning at all ages and promotes the benefits of learning new life skill. Deputy mayor Lara Carli said it was a great way to discover new interests.
“The festival takes learning out of the classroom and into dance studios, gardens, swimming pools and community hubs. It’s a fun, fulfilling and hands-on approach to learning that everyone can enjoy,” Cr Carli said. “This is your chance to try something that’s always interested you, or challenge yourself by discovering something you may never have considered before. “The best part is many of the activities will continue beyond the festival, opening up new possibilities for ongoing learning, building friendships and maybe even a hobby for life.” The festival will be launched at 10.30am on October 18, on the lawn outside the Melton Library and Learning Hub. Some activities require bookings. Classes can be found at meltonlearning.com.au/festival Ewen McRae

Travel grants for athletes Melton MP Steve McGhie is encouraging local athletes and teams to apply for travel grants to help them take their skills to the next level. The latest round of the state government’s Athlete Pathway Travel Grants Program opened last week. The program helps emerging and high-performance Victorian athletes, teams, coaches and officials to realise their sporting potential through grants that remove the barrier of travel and accommodation costs. Organisations recognised by Sport and Recreation Victoria can apply for grants of up to $6000 for teams or up to $1500 for individuals to travel to compete as a state representative athlete. Victorian sport and recreation clubs can also apply for grants of up to $2000 for teams and $750 for individuals to travel to competitions or training that contribute to an athlete’s development within their sporting pathway. There is also funding available to assist coaches and officials to travel to events to carry out official duties. Mr McGhie encouraged teams and individual athletes to apply for the grants and push themselves at higher levels of competition Further information on the grants can be found at visit: www.sport.vic.gov.au/ grants-and-funding/our-grants/athletepathway-travel-grants-program.

Festival of food and fun By Jessica Micallef You can help Carlsruhe CFA build a better station. The CFA will host its annual wine and food festival next month, with all funds raised going toward a new station. Firefighter Greg Clinnick said there would be something for everyone on the day. “There will be … a jumping castle, camel rides, face-painting, plaster-cast painting and farm animal petting for the kids,” he said.
“From 12.30pm to 2.30pm there will be free balloon art for the kids. Eating and drinking will be catered for with a barbecue, food stalls, popcorn and fairy floss, local wineries, beer brewers, a cidery and gin distillers all on site.” The day will also include a classic car display and several vintage tractors. “The funds raised from the festival will allow the brigade to upgrade the station to better protect their local and nearby communities,” Mr Clinnick said. In August, land was purchased on Cobb and
Co Road for a new CFA station to be built. The state government has previously provided $600,000 funding to the project. Further funds were allocated in the 2019-20 state budget. The station is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. The Carlsruhe CFA Wine and Food Festival is on Sunday, November 3 between 11am-5pm at Farmer Darryl’s Farm, 97 Trio Road, Kyneton. Admission is $5 for adults and gold coin donation for children aged under 15. Details: carlsruhefirebrigade.events@gmail.com

No complaints from Melton By Ewen McRae Melton council is one of just five Melbourne councils which failed to provide complaints data to a recent Victorian ombudsman’s report. The ombudsman surveyed all local governments to determine how they define complaints and how many complaints they received in the past calendar year, among other things. Melton council said it was unable to provide complaints data for the report “due to the varying complexity of different categories and subject matters”.
The most recent complaints policy on the council website expired in 2017. Engagement and advocacy manager Sean McManus said the council was working to endorse a new one. “Our customer service experience is designed to respond to and resolve community inquiries as promptly and efficiently as possible,” Mr McManus said. “We log all requests onto an electronic request system and allocate them to a responsible officer. “Currently we don’t have a workable framework that can easily extract data with varying complexity across a large range of services and subject matter. Our website
outlines how the community can make a complaint and, while we are in the process of updating the Complaints Management Policy, the principles of the most recent policy still apply.” Moorabool council said it received just 18 complaints in 2018, but 68,300 requests for services. It told the ombudsman it is currently reviewing its complaints procedures. “Council does not have a Complaints Register, however, following an internal audit that is currently being conducted, this will be rectified and provided for in council’s draft Complaints Policy and Procedure which is
currently being reviewed.” Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass said councils needed to adopt a broader definition of complaints and not view them so negatively. “Far too many councils still adopt a narrow definition of complaint or interpret it narrowly in practice,” Ms Glass said. “Not only is it impossible to compare the councils, those who understate the level of public dissatisfaction may well be failing to deal with it. “Complaints are actually a good thing – they are free feedback. Whether about a missed bin, blocked drain, rates notice or parking ticket, they say something about council services.”

Care expo offers support By Ewen McRae More than 70 services for seniors, carers, or locals living with a disability will be available at this week’s CARE Melton Expo. The expo will give people the chance to talk directly to the service providers and gather information and solutions for improved care, independence and support. Attendees can also participate in a free relaxation workshop and network with people who share similar experiences. Melton deputy mayor Lara Carli said the
expo was a great opportunity to gain more support and learn about the services on offer in the municipality. “If you think you might need additional support, or perhaps you’re struggling to find the right care locally, the expo can help,” Cr Carli said. “It’s a chance to explore how local service providers and resources can enhance your lifestyle, role and wellbeing. “Come along and have your questions answered, discover improved care options, meet others, and join in the relaxation workshops. “Residents with a disability, their families and
carers can explore the many new opportunities that became available under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and our older residents can learn what’s available to support their independence or provide their future care.” Some of the exhibitors include the NDIS, Brotherhood of St Laurence, Carers Victoria, Centrelink, Australian Hearing and Vision Australia. The CARE Expo will be held on Thursday October 17, from 10am-2pm at the Melton Community Hall. Details: www.melton.vic.gov.au/CARE
Paramedics are calling on residents to download a phone app as part of a campaign to encourage the community to step in after a cardiac arrest. Paramedics will be holding CPR displays at the Caroline Springs library this month to demonstrate the GoodSAM app. Ambulance Victoria Melton senior team manager Fida Masri said it was important the community knew what to do if they were with someone experiencing a heart attack. “We know that if a bystander steps in and begins CPR before we arrive it doubles the person’s chance of survival. “Minutes matter in cardiac arrest, and the sooner a person receives CPR and the application of a defibrillator, the better their chances of survival. “Bystanders are the critical first link in the chain of survival and can help keep patients alive before our highly-trained paramedics arrive.” Ms Masri said 16 Victorians suffer cardiac arrest each day, and only one in 10 survive. The GoodSAM Responder app alerts responders to a nearby suspected cardiac arrest and the location of the nearest AED. The library event will be held at Caroline Springs library on October 19, from 9.30am-12.30pm. Details: www.ambulance.vic.gov.au/ goodSAM Ewen McRae

IS WEEK’S SELECTION: Neill Jones has already left a strong imprint
on the Melton community, and he’s ensuring an even longer legacy with his series of junior fiction books. Mr Jones taught at Melton South Primary School for 26 years, finishing in 2013, and is now living in Point Lonsdale as he battles terminal cancer. He returned to Melton recently to launch the second and third books in his ‘Fearless Four’ series, which he said began as a writing exercise for his pupils. “I have some very fond memories of teaching at Melton South, and some of the students remembered me and came along to the book launch, which was lovely,” Mr Jones said. “One year I had a class of boys who just hated writing,
and I started doing an exercise where they would write a five minute story, and I would do it too. About seven weeks in, the boys didn’t want to stop writing, so they found a love for it. “We launched the most recent books in Melton, and … over 100 [people] showed up, so that’s great to see.” Mr Jones said he has written 27 short stories which he is hoping to publish in time. He based his own stories on the fictional adventures of his son, Thomas, and his friends, and said he hoped to inspire young people to write themselves, and develop a lifelong love of books. Recycling negotiations begin By Tate Papworth Brimbank council is in negotiations with waste management company Cleanaway to sure up a permanent new kerbside recycling agreement. The council had previously contracted SKM for its recycling. The company folded in July, owing tens of millions of dollars and brought the municipality’s kerbside recycling to an abrupt halt. A massive 2314 tonnes of recyclable material from across Brimbank was dumped in landfill for more than eight weeks.
The council was left $185,000 out of pocket, but has since received a state government grant to offset the costs of landfilling recyclables. The council had arranged a short-term agreement with SKM receivers, KordaMentha to process its kerbside collected recyclable material at the Laverton North processing facility. The $66 million purchase of SKM by Cleanaway was announced last week. Brimbank council acting director infrastructure and city services Tom Razmovski said a new arrangement was now in the works.
“Given the acquisition by Cleanaway of the SKM assets, a new contract will need to be negotiated,” he said. “Council will also continue to liaise with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group in relation to the options for long term arrangements for the processing of Brimbank’s recyclables.” It’s yet to be determined if the new contract will impact rates, but Mr Razmovski said the kerbside recycling process would remain the same for the foreseeable future. “Given a new contract is still to be negotiated, the cost of service and any impact on rates is
yet to be determined,” Mr Razmovski said. “At this stage council is not looking to change the current kerbside collection arrangements, however the state government is in the process of preparing a circular economy strategy which may provide options for new recycling services for council’s consideration.” Cleanaway’s purchase of SKM doesn’t solve the issue of five warehouses left with thousands of tonnes of stockpiled glass, paper, cardboard and plastic. ■ Warehouse

Locked up for Lifeline Kurunjang Secondary College students last week had the chance to lock away a teacher for the day, but it was all for a good cause. As part of a fundraiser for Lifeline, and working with local police, assistant principal Aylin Gokmen spent part of last Wednesday in handcuffs and behind bars. Ms Gokmen said while the day was a bit of fun for the students and herself, there was an important message behind it. “We did it last year, and our student support services leader is often very proactive in running events to raise money for various organisations, and especially those that help young people,” she said. “Last year it was the principal that was locked up, but he was on good behaviour this year so it was my turn. “It’s about Lifeline, but it’s also about promoting positive relationships between police and young people. Sometimes people
have negative experiences or opinions of law enforcement, so getting police here and interacting on a positive level and talking about community partnerships and relationships is really important.” As part of the day, local police visited the school to speak to students about the work they do in the community and help build a relationship with the students. Ms Gokmen said the response from the school community was fantastic. Donations on the day and from a fundraising barbecue went to the important work of Lifeline. “We had some students dress up as police, and everyone really got behind what we were trying to promote,” she said. “We have all sorts of mental health training for our students as well, so we have a real emphasis on that throughout the year.” Ewen McRae

Sam’s story of sobriety By Goya Dmytryshchak Sam* wanted to stop, but couldn’t. The 32-year-old, who has been sober for two and half years, says he sought out Alcoholics Anonymous after trying to control his drinking on his own but ending up drinking more. “I guess some early signs of my drinking potentially being a problem were blackouts … and just really bad hangovers forming for a day or two, but all of which could still be excused within what others are doing and the Australian drinking culture,” Sam said. “I was increasingly finding everyday life difficult. Things like getting and holding down a job, study. Relationships were starting to become frayed. “Anxiety, which I had always suffered from to some extent, was exacerbated by my drinking and occasional drug use.” Sam says he didn’t hit any particular rock bottom but he realised alcohol was the cause of a lot of problems in his life. “What made it clear that I had a real problem with alcohol was when I made that connection and I made a conscious decision to stop drinking, I couldn’t,” Sam said. “I was unable to, on my own, manage any prolonged period of abstinence. “The worst … would be, I’ll have a couple of drinks on a Friday night after work and then the next thing I know is it’s Saturday afternoon and I haven’t slept, and that’s involved several nightclubs, probably getting kicked out of one, and then finding a party or someone’s house to go back to and drink. “People who knew me probably didn’t suspect that I had a drinking problem because it wasn’t like I was drinking every single day or every single night – my problem is that once I start I can’t stop.”
Sam says stopping drinking has helped save his relationship. (Damjan Janevski) Right: Sam’s token for being sober for two years. (Supplied)
Sam said after a roller coaster of abstaining for a while and then drinking uncontrollably, he was exhausted and desperate. “One Sunday, I hadn’t had a drink for six or seven days since the previous weekend, which had been another low point, and something occurred to me … I think it was the realisation that nothing’s gonna change unless I seek help,” he said. “I found the number for one of the Melbourne offices of AA on Google and that Sunday morning when I thought, I need some help here, called up.” That night, he says despite feeling
apprehensive, he attended his first meeting. “I remember it being quite a profound experience because immediately you had people talking about what had been my experience up until that point,” Sam said. “There was an immediate sense of relief, and hope as well, because they were talking about being sober now and not needing to drink anymore.” Two and a half years sober, Sam is now a ‘sponsor’ – or mentor, for others. “The most meaningful difference it has made is to my now wife – for her to have someone who is reliable, is consistent, doesn’t lie about
where they’ve been or what they’ve done,” he said. “That’s made an immeasurable difference and probably saved our relationship. “If you think you’ve got a problem with drinking, what have you got to lose to come to AA and give it a shot?” Regular meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous are held at Melton, Djerriwarrh Community House, 239 Station Road, Melton at 7pm on Mondays, Wednedays and Fridays and at Bacchus Marsh, Senior Citizens Room, Bennett Street on Wednesdays at 7pm. Waste costs pile up By Tate Papworth Waste company Cleanaway may have bought recycler SKM, but tens of thousands of tonnes of discarded waste still lies in factories across Derrimut, Sunshine, Laverton and Campbellfield and owners are none the wiser as to what to do with it. SKM collapsed in July, owing tens of millions of dollars. The collapse forced a number of councils, including Brimbank, to divert kerbside recycling material to landfill.
‘‘
We’ve been left with this for two to three months
’’
- Carly Whitington
Cleanaway now intends to resume kerbside services, but that doesn’t solve the problem festering in suburban factories. Marwood Construction project manager Carly Whitington said they have no idea what to do with the 10,000 tonnes of discarded recyclable material they’ve inherited at their Derrimut warehouse. “With the news that Cleanaway has purchased the failed SKM enterprise, we were in the hope that Cleanaway would come and rectify the left behind issue, but we’ve been advised that’s not the case,” Ms Whitington said. “Basically what we’re trying to do is liaise with the government to see if there can be some subsidy or deal … come to an agreement about us transporting this material to the Cleanaway site on Gilbertson Road and having it recycled. “They haven’t got any answers for us yet, which they haven’t for quite a while. We’re

waiting for some form of resolution because we need to do something with it.” She called on the state government to end the state of limbo. “We met with the Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio. We met with some of her associates as well, but there hasn’t been a yes or a no.
“I’ve even contacted a representative and said if it’s a no, just tell us it’s a no and we’ll walk away. If you are going to help us in some sort of respect, tell us, give us a time, don’t just leave us in limbo. Because that’s where we are at the moment. We’ve been left with this for two to three months since the collapse and we don’t know what to do with it.”

LEXUS MELBOURNE CUP TOUR
Ms Whitington estimated the company was already out of pocket $500,000 on lost rent and would have to find close to $2 million to clean the warehouse. “It surprises me that the government isn’t taking a proactive approach to this,” she said. “People are going to be looking at this and thinking ‘why am I bothering recycling’.
Since 2003, the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour has provided rural, regional and metropolitan communities across Australia and New Zealand a chance to experience the magic of the iconic $200,000 Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy. My aim is to present a show I would like to listen to, you know that you can’t please everyone so I pitch it at my demographic, talking about the issues of the day, mostly playing music from days gone by. You worked at 3AW for a long time, how was that experience? What’s one of your favourite stories you covered while you were there? There’s never a dull moment in a big newsroom. You never know what each day will bring. I enjoyed the variety of stories you get to cover, but media conferences at my AFL team North Melbourne were always special. If you need room to spread out, this could be the answer. With five bedrooms and three living spaces, this modern house is calling out for a family to make itself at home. Clean lines throughout are emphasised with white walls and glossy large-format floor tiles. Space to relax and entertain is sorted with those three living areas, comprising a lounge room at the front of the house; a living area in the heart of the home; and a separate rumpus room. The open plan kitchen features dark cabinetry with light benchtops, 900mm freestanding oven and cooktop, dishwasher and a large walk-in pantry. All five bedrooms have built-in robes, the main bedroom features a walk-in robe and full en suite. Downlights throughout, ducted heating, an alarm system and 21 solar panels add to the appeal. On about 476 square metres, there’s an over-sized double lock-up garage and low maintenance gardens. In the Toolern Waters estate with proposed waterside cafes, walking tracks and brand new Coles shopping centre, the property is within easy access to Melton station and all levels of schooling.

Bulls lose in a thriller
Lions roar in first match
By Tara Murray Reigning premier Bacchus Marsh remains without a win in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup after two rounds. Saturday’s match against Romsey went down to the final over but it was Romsey that got its first win of the season. Having won the toss, the Bulls made 5-199 from their overs, with captain-coach James Lidgett leading the way. Lidgett, who came in at 1-15, made 84 as he batted deep into the innings. It’s his second half century in a row. It was his Romsey counterpart Ben Way that got his side over the line. Romsey made the runs with one ball remaining, finishing 5-201. Way finished 79 not out. It was all single wicket-takers for the Bulls. Bacchus Marsh this week faces Woodend, away. In other matches, Diggers Rest remains unbeaten, having accounted for Riddell. The Burras made 8-184 from their overs, before restricting the Bombers to 125. Raveen Yasas top scored for the Burras with 38, while playing coach Rasika Batepola took 3-10 off his seven overs. Gisborne won its second match, beating Sunbury United. Chasing 6-161, Gisborne finished 2-162 on the back of 88 not out from Mick Allen. St Anthony’s match with Woodend ended in a draw, with the game not able to be finished. St Anthony’s made 8-129, with Woodend 1-54 off 13 overs when the match was called off. In the Jensen Shield, Eynesbury Eagles lost to Diggers Rest Bulla, while Aintree won its first ever match, beating Kyneton.
Melton started the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west season with a solid win against Hoppers Crossing on Saturday. Needing to have a strong day with the bat, the Lions were able to produce the performance needed. Hoppers Crossing started the day with 13 overs still to face. The Lions thought they would be chasing 200-plus, but got the job done quickly. They needed less than six overs to bowl Hoppers Crossing out for 187 and were able to limit the damage to just 10 extra runs added to the day one score. Skipper Brad Jones, who took one wicket on Saturday, finished with three wickets for the game. All but one bowler got a wicket. It looked like a tough ask for the Lions, when they lost 5-18 to slip to 6-75. However, a partnership between Matthew Stead and Dilshan Kanchana proved to be a match-winning one. The Lions didn’t loss another wicket, finishing 6-190. Kanchana, in his first game for Melton, top scored with 58 not out, while Stead finished 56 not out. Ben MacRae produced a handy 32 early in the innings. The Lions play their first home match of the season this week, facing Waverley in a two-dayer.

SPORT New Sharks coach looks to build on strengths Hillside didn’t have to look far to find a new coach for next year’s Essendon District Football League division 1 season. The club announced on Sunday that assistant coach Charlie Denaro would be the man to replace Steve Burns, who decided to step away from coaching. Denaro, who has previously coached the club’s under-18s, has been an assistant coach under Burns the past three years. He said it was exciting to get the opportunity. He said his appointment would allow the club to continue with the process they’ve put in place the past few years. “I’m stoked, it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” he said. “To get the opportunity, it’s an incredible opportunity.
“The last 15 years, I coached at Hillside or coached against them. I know what they can and can’t do. I know the strengths and weaknesses and we’ll work hard to continue the development of the playing list.” Denaro has coached several of the group at under-18 level, where he coached back-to-back premierships. He said while they have a young list, he was keen not to focus on that. “I coached some three to four years ago in the younger age group, they are at a different level now and they are more advanced,” he said. “Once they cross the line I don’t gauge them as young players.” Denaro said they were disappointed not to make finals this season, having dropped some
matches they had expected to win. For him, it’s about getting back into that top four. “We are completely different coaches and I’ll take his [Burns’] hard work and capitalise on it. “The last few years have been good for the club. We’re looking for improvement and a minimum one better and into the four.” Denaro has been busily part of the process to get some new players into the side. He said things should work smoother now with possible recruits knowing who the coach is. “The club has been working hard behind the scenes and trying to get the ball rolling. “The next week or two we’ll look to secure a few players to fill roles. “The club is in a good position, even prior to
Bacchus takes out derby By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh came out on top in the first battle against Melton in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 2, section 1. Playing each other for the first time since Bacchus Marsh moved to the Bowls Victoria competition, it was one match-up both sides were looking forward too. It was a reasonably close match all day, with Bacchus Marsh holding the lead for much of it. Bacchus Marsh was able to stay on top when needed, coming away with an 85 (16)-64 (2) win. Bacchus Marsh president and skip Phil Minniti said it was good to get a first win at home against their closest competitor. “As we’ve said, it’s a friendly rivalry with Melton,” he said. “It was a really good day and pretty close all day. “We were just ahead all day, but we were never far enough ahead to feel comfortable. “To come home with 16 points this time is big.” Bacchus Marsh’s Tanner Dickson-Arthur’s rink won 25-14 against Alan Thistlethwaite in the biggest win of the day. Troy Williams’ rink won 20-13 against Conrad Dawson’s rink and Daniel Willis’ rink won 24-19 against Russell Taylor. Minniti’s rink was the only one not to get up, losing to Colin Norris’ rink 18-16. Minniti said they had enjoyed the challenge of the new competition so far. “We’ve got what we expected so far,” he said. “We knew it was a bit tougher than from what we were used to playing. “We’re yet to have our full side, we’ll have that in the next few weeks. “We had a couple missing on the weekend. It will be full steam ahead.” Bacchus Marsh sits on top of the ladder after two rounds, having claimed 32 of a possible 36 points. It is the only side to have won both of its matches. Minniti said the first two weeks set up their season, which is full of a lot of unknown challenges. “That’s two wins in a row and it’s a dream start,” he said. “To have one win at home and one win away, it sets up everything.” Bacchus Marsh this week faces Strathmore, which is 1-1. Melton, which has a 1-1 record, will play Werribee at home. Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh’s Central Highlands Bowls Division sides had mixed results. In division 1, Bacchus Marsh lost to last year’s runners-up Lancefield. The division 3 side, also faced Lancefield. It went down to the final bowl, with Bacchus Marsh getting the win.
my appointment. “The last three days since the appointment, a lot of action has happened.” The Sharks, though, will be without two of their stars, with Victor Micallef and Brandon Coletta both on the move to fellow division 1 club East Keilor. Denaro said you never want to loss players of their calibre. “They were our captain and vice-captain,” he said. “You don’t replace players like them, you just have to get on with it. “They are Hillside people and we would rather keep them, but we send them off with nothing but best wishes.” Tara Murray
Centrals look forward to new challenges Melton Centrals are keen for the new challenges that await in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 Charles Clark Shield competiton. Having won the division 5 premiership last season, Centrals have gone up a grade and now face some new opposition. Centrals skipper Adam Hulett said it would be a good challenge for the group. “We might have played three of the teams before,” he said. “It leaves six that we haven’t played before. We’re actually looking forward to it.” Most of Centrals premiership side has returned, with only two confirmed outs. Youngster, and grand final man-of-the-match, Connor Poulton has moved to VTCA powerhouse Yarraville Club. “We knew we were never going to hold onto him forever,” Hulett said. “He’s gone to a higher level and we wish him the best.” Centrals have added an opening bowler to their squad. Chris Willoughby has shown good early signs. They were also looking at reshuffling their batting order. Across the board, Hulett said numbers were looking good. Off field, they have a new coaching set-up with Hulett stepping back from coaching due to work commitments. A number of people are sharing the role, with it working well so far. Hulett, who captained the premiership side last season, will remain as captain. He said they didn’t think it was worth changing something that was working. Having gone up a grade, Hulett said they weren’t looking too far ahead. “We have not really set any expectations,” he said. “We’re not familiar with a lot of the opposition. As long as we’re playing good cricket, it will take care of the rest.” Centrals started their season on Saturday against Grand United. The match went down to the final over, with Grand United getting over the line. Centrals were bowled out for 179 in the final over of their innings. Grand United made the runs with three balls to spare, finishing 9-180. In division 5, Melton South Royals defeated Williamstown Colts. After restricting the Colts to 9-84, the Royals made 5-89 to come away with the points.

North Western Titans are expecting to build throughout the Baseball Victoria Summer League division 3 season. With a new-look side, the Titans know it will take some time to get things going. Despite not having a win on the board, new coach Stuart Tierney has been happy with how things have gone so far. “We’re still trying to get a few new players,” he said. “It’s a whole new squad with a few players from last year. “We only went down to the premiers from last year by six runs … we could have beaten them, we made more hits but made a few errors in the field.” Tierney said the change of playing group was due to a number of reasons. He said there was some who were having a season off, while they were hopeful some would come back later in the season. Just three players from last season’s team played in the opening couple of rounds.
They have gone out and added a few players too. Three former Werribee players have joined the club, with possibly a fourth to come across too. Those three missed the first game, while waiting for their clearances to come through. “I played at Werribee a few years back with them,” Tierney said. “They played in Werribee’s firsts and seconds. “They wanted a bit of change. One had moved to Melton and then brought his mates. “We’ve got a good squad and hopefully we’ll push for finals.” Tierney said that they were still after more players across the board if anyone was interested. Tierney, who joined the Titans last season, has taken on the coaching role. Having long been involved in baseball and coaching, he wanted to get more involved at his new club. “I wanted to give a little bit back,” he said.
“I started coaching when I was 15-16, coaching juniors. I have had a few years off. “They needed some extra help this year and I already knew everyone.” On Sunday, the Titans suffered their third loss in a row, this time losing to Chelsea. Missing a few players, the Titans lost 15-8. The Titans conceded the lead early and were never able to recover, despite having more hits. Cameron Wilson managed five hits from his five attempts. Tierney said they were hoping to get on the board in the next couple of weeks. “We are playing a couple of the easier sides, hopefully we’ll get a few wins. “We think finals are a good chance after what we saw against the top side. “Hopefully we’ll get a couple more players back.” Tierney said overall the club was in a good position. He said they were still looking for players for their other sides as well. Tara Murray

United’s historic first win By Lance Jenkinson Western United has travelled across the ditch to claim its first ever points in the Hyundai A-League. In their debut game, United conquered Wellington Phoenix 1-0 in an arm wrestle at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Sunday. Big name signing Besart Berisha, acquired only two weeks before the start of the season, scored United’s historic first goal in the 34th minute – the winning goal of the game. It was no shock to see Berisha on the scoresheet first, considering he is the top goalscorer in league history. Western United had the kick-off to start the game and settled into an early groove. United dominated on the ball with Dario Jertec and Panagiotis Kone controlling proceedings from the centre of the park. Jertec, a former Croatia under-21 international, was the most influential player on the park in the first half. Most of United’s positive attacks went through the 34-year-old Jertec, including the goal. Jertec unlocked the defence, playing a ball into the feet of left winger Connor Pain, 30 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 15, 2019
allowing Pain to get in behind the defence. Pain found just enough space to put in a cross, which sailed over the crowd of players in the box and to the back post for United teammate Josh Risdon. With a neat first touch, Risdon re-directed the ball low and hard into the mixer to find Berisha, who instinctively guided it home. It was a history-making moment that gave United its first lead. The lead was only possible because of United goalkeeper Filip Kurto, who moments earlier pulled off a diving save to deny a long range strike from Wellington’s Liberato Cacace. It was a save to savour for Kurto, a former Phoenix player who was subjected to jeers all game from the home crowd. Alessandro Diamanti made an impressive debut in the Western United captain’s arm band. Diamanti was a constant handful for the Wellington defence. While Diamanti and Berisha were hard-working on the front line, Western United had its fair share of defending to do. In that respect, Andrew Durante, another former Phoenix player, Ersan Gulum and Connor Chapman stood firm.
Durante was absolutely superb in the heart of the defence, detonating countless Phoenix forays forward and kick-starting United from the back. The second half had a different complexion to it, though. Wellington seemed to grow in confidence. The Phoenix’s best chance came through a rare indirect free kick late in the second half. The chance sailed over the crossbar and out of harms way for United. Holding a fragile one goal lead after 90 minutes, Western United still had plenty of work to do with the referee adding on seven minutes of stoppage time. A head clash which drew blood from Jertec added even more time on top of that stoppage time, so the game went beyond 100 minutes. With some fresh legs in substitutes Jonathan Aspropotamitis, Kwabena Appiah-Kubi and Max Burgess, United saw off the threat. When the full-time whistle finally came, United coach Mark Rudan was smiling like a Cheshire cat, hugging his support staff and players in celebration. United will play its home opener against Perth Glory at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Saturday at 5pm.
