Vandals strike estate By Ewen McRae A construction company is thousands of dollars out of pocket after vandals destroyed five houses under construction in Harkness. The houses are part of the Willandra estate on Willandra Boulevard, and were almost complete, but on October 13 vandals smashed almost every window and tore holes in walls. Construction manager Martin Doegan said the vandalism had caused more than $30,000 damage and set back the completion date by almost a month. “These houses were pretty much done, I was just waiting on some flyscreens and blinds to finish them off,” Mr Doegan said.

“They’ve really gone to town on these five houses. There were 20 broken panes of glass, one house in particular had the plaster in every room destroyed. “The windows are made from pretty tough glass, but when they break they shatter and the carpets were knee deep in shards of glass. It was a whole day’s work just trying to get the houses to some point where tradesmen could come back into them. “You get the odd bit of damage on building sites, that’s just part of it unfortunately, but I’ve never seen anything like this.” Mr Doegan said the vandals are lucky not to have severely injured themselves. “One bit of damage in particular looks like they’ve had a go with a star picket [pointed metal pole], but it was right next to a light switch,” he said. “They are so lucky they didn’t barbecue themselves. One of them has clearly cut himself because there was blood all over one of the units.” It is the second time the site has been struck by vandals recently, with an attempt two weeks ago to steal split-systems from two houses. Mr Doegan said police had recovered a number of fingerprints from the scene. He has also increased security at the site to deter any future vandalism. “We’ve heard from neighbours that they saw some kids on bikes around the houses near the time it would have happened, but we don’t

really know much more,” Mr Doegan said. “The police have some samples and prints, but if they’re kids it’s unlikely they’ll match up. We’ve got temporary fences, but they
basically just define the boundaries of the site. We’ve now installed cameras on every block, which is another expense, but we’ve got no choice. “We just want to let people know to keep
an eye out, especially on weekends, if you see people at building sites who don’t look like they should be there, call the police.” Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Townhouse plan gets green light By Ewen McRae
“I have concerns that it is an overdevelopment of the site, on the other hand, the ones that have gone to VCAT have been won [by developers] and been a cost to council.” Councillor Sophie Ramsey said she was not happy with several VCAT decisions recently on council planning matters and wished to avoid a repeat on this planning application. “I will vote for it, but I do it reluctantly,” Cr Ramsey said. “I don’t want to spend one more cent of our ratepayers dollars in fighting a lost cause, but I want it to be a development that is state of the art and presents really well.”
Councillor Steve Abboushi spoke in support of the application, saying it provided more housing options for the community. “I am in support of the officers recommendations to grant a permit,” Cr Abboushi said. “It provides a variety of housing options for a community that is looking for variety, and we need to be able to provide that for our commuity to ease the pressure and financial burden on people who can’t get a house in today’s market.” The application was approved five votes to four.

Melton council has reluctantly approved a planning permit for 10 double-storey townhouses, despite concerns about neighbourhood character. The application for the proposed development at 15 Joan Street, Melton, came before the council at its meeting last week. During discussions a number of councillors expressed concerns that an appeal would be lodged with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal if the permit was not approved.
The plan proposes to demolish an existing dwelling on the site and replace it with 10 double storey dwellings. It is almost identical to a development on the same street that was approved following an appeal to VCAT recently. Councillor Kathy Majdlik said her main concern was having to fight the application at VCAT if a refusal of the permit was appealed. “I do have concerns if we are to refuse this,” Cr Majdlik said. “The previous ones that have been taken to VCAT have taken councillors time and energy to fight.

Tributes flowed at last week’s meeting of Melton council, following the passing of former chief executive Neville Smith. Mr Smith was a general manager at Melton council before being appointed as CEO in 2002 – a position he held until 2010 when he left to take on the same role at Moonee Valley council. Mr Smith, 67, died on October 12 after a battle with cancer. Mayor Bob Turner said he would be fondly remembered by the Melton community. “Neville was a highly respected and admired leader in local government, with a quirky sense of humour and an outgoing personality,” Cr Turner said. “Neville became and remained a close friend to many at Melton, and his passing is a great loss.” Councillor Sophie Ramsey said Mr Smith had been a strong advocate for improving Melton. “He was an admired leader, and a respected work colleague, who worked tirelessly for the City of Melton,” Cr Ramsey said. Council flew flags outside Melton Civic Centre and Caroline Springs library at half mast on October 18, the day of Mr Smith’s funeral.

Suicide: We need to talk By Ewen McRae When it comes to suicide rates in Australia, the stats don’t lie. Latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics have the suicide rate at 12.6 per 100,000 people, it also shows that men are three times more likely to take their own life than women. CoHealth community mental health worker Joseph Bentley-Ross said while increased awareness and education on the importance of good mental health was improving, there was always more that could be done.

“There are a host of reasons for why men are more likely to act on suicide, but there’s no doubt more men are accessing these mental health services, which is pleasing,” Mr Bentley-Ross said. “In terms of starting conversations with people, it’s about noticing if someone you know or someone you see in the community is more isolated and being comfortable to talk to them about that and see if they need some more help. “Starting a conversation can be very important.” The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has identified Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges as having higher than average suicide rates and it’s calling on the community to help it take action through a short online course. Mr Bentley-Ross said language and attitudes among men played an important role in good

mental health and hoped a greater focus would held promote change. “I think the language to talk around emotions and feelings might not come as readily or as easily to some men,” he said.
“The narrative that plays out across generations, families, and communities is that, for right or wrong, men and women are treated differently in how we talk about feelings or emotions.

Starting a conversation can be very important
“In terms of language, that really changes our ability to identify men’s own feelings and emotions. And that comes through with language like ‘you need to man up’ or ‘stiff upper lip’, ‘boys don’t cry’, all idioms that we could do without because they lead to men not wanting to talk about their feelings and emotions because they’re worried about being judged. “What I’m hoping through the work of the Primary Health Network and the online training, is to give people the opportunity to feel comfortable talking about suicide and being gatekeepers within the community to allow anybody to ask ‘Are you OK?’ and feel comfortable talking about it.” The increased visability of events like R U OK? Day, and the work of local Men’s Sheds and sporting clubs has put mental health in the spotlight in recent times, Mr Bentley-Ross said. “There’s a lot of work being done in this space,” he said. “There’s a lot of targeted work being done in areas of masculinity where a lot of men might not feel safe to have those conversations, and I think that’s an important step to help those that are statistically more at risk.” NWMPHN is offering a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. Road blitz hits the west
Students from Bacchus Marsh Grammar get ready for the World Record attempt. (Mark Wilson)
World record attempt By Ewen McRae Soccer enthusiasts are being called to Rockbank’s Frontier Park this weekend to try and make their mark. The park at Woodlea is set to be overrun when an attempt at the Guinness World Record for the World’s Biggest Football (Soccer) Lesson is made. The current record for the greatest number of people attending and participating in a soccer lesson at a single venue is 705 people, achieved in Poland on April 8, 2018.
Woodlea sales and marketing manager Lora Djurdjevic said the attempt continues a strong history for their soccer lessons in the area, and with 5000 people currently living in Woodlea the record could easily be smashed. “Woodlea is all about creating a community that encourages families to lead an active, healthy lifestyle,” Ms Djurdjevic said. “Now in its fifth consecutive year, this will be our biggest soccer clinic yet. “We are so thrilled to be hosting a fun, family-friendly event that really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be part of history
and help bring the title of World’s Biggest Soccer Lesson to Australia.” The record attempt will take place on October 26, and feature former Socceroo Kevin Muscat and Matildas striker Kyah Simon – who has her own world record as Australia’s first indigenous athlete to score at a FIFA World Cup. The lesson will also feature a number of former Brazilian professional players, and is open to all ages and skill levels. Each official Guinness World Records attempt participant will receive a free soccer ball. Details: http://bit.ly/soccerworldrecord
Several local roads are being targeted as part of a road maintenance blitz across the state. Member for Melton Steve McGhie said work crews were gearing up to carry out thousands of maintenance jobs across the state during the warmer months. Roads in Melton that form part of the works include The Western Highway, Melton Highway and Ballarat Road. “We’re delivering another massive program of road maintenance to make sure drivers in Melton can safely get to where they’re going, on smoother and more reliable roads,” Mr McGhie said. “We know how important these roads are to families in Melton who are heading to work or dropping the kids off at school – that’s why we’re fixing them.” The maintenance program will also improve, repair and replace damaged signs, safety barriers and fences. On any given night during the blitz, about 100 workers will be fixing roads across Melbourne, while 1100 construction jobs are set to be created in the regions as part of this work. The blitz is part of a $653.5 million state government investment to rebuild and resurface roads across the state over the next two years. The work will include the improvement of more than 1800 kilometres of roads across Victoria, 150,000 potholes and trim more than 30,000 kilometres of roadside vegetation in the next year. Ewen McRae

Rent costs remain affordable By Melissa Heagney and Ewen McRae Melton and Melton South are among the cheapest suburbs in Melbourne to rent, according to a new report. Domain’s Rental Report for the September quarter shows that rental prices vary widely – up to $643 per week – between rentals in the inner and outer suburbs. Jayson Ryder, managing director of Ryder Real Estate in Melton, said affordability was the main driver for people renting in the cheaper
outer suburbs. “I think affordability is the number one thing … as well as having a good train network, schools, shopping and other amenities,” Mr Ryder said. Families, older couples, single people and new migrants were all moving to cheaper areas to be closer to family, friends or to where they grew up, Mr Ryder said. In Melbourne, Melton and Melton South offer the cheapest rental medians at $320 per week, while Kurunjang had the fifth cheapest
median at $330. According to the report, median asking prices for Melbourne rentals were steady over the September quarter, with house rent prices remaining at a median of $430 per week. Unit rents were $420, which is also unchanged over the quarter, but marks a 2.4 per cent increase over the year. The rental vacancy rate rose from 1.4 per cent to 1.8 per cent over the past 12 months in Melbourne. In Moorabool, the median rental is $370 a week, up from $360 12 months ago.
Despite experiencing a similar dwelling construction boom to Sydney in recent years, the Melbourne rental market has not swung in favour of tenants to the same extent. The Domain report said this is likely due to Melbourne maintaining stronger population growth. This strong population growth also means demand for rentals has matched increased supply. There has been an 8.5 per cent increase in the volume of rental listings over the September quarter, according to Domain data.
Referees in the pink Melton Basketball Association has been tickled pink this month, as the referees stepped up to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research. The referees have been wearing pink uniforms for the month as part of a new campaign to shine a light on the all to common cancer, and the response has been overwhelming. Association referees advisor Emily Todorov said she introduced the colour change for the month to help spread awareness in the community. “I was watching the Olivia Newton-John documentary recently, and I just thought we could be doing more to help,” she said. “It’s [breast cancer] far too common, everyone knows someone who’s been affected by it, so I thought about how we could do something and thought what better way then to get all my refs into pink and raise some funds. “The response has been fantastic. All the refs got on board and have donated part of their pay
towards the fund, and all the parents and kids have been right behind it by chipping in as well, which is great.” A total of 55 referees in the association have taken part in the campaign this year, while local businesses S.G.A. Engineering and Sportz Buzz donated towards getting the special uniforms made. Ms Todorov said she hoped this became an annual event. “I ref in NBL1, which is a state league competition, and we do something like this each year which is really well received, so I’d love that to happen here,” she said. “I know that the amount that we would raise isn’t a huge amount, but every bit helps. “We’ve got donation tins that are full already, so we’ll keep fundraising until the end of the month and then hopefully try and top it next year.” Ewen McRae

Safety fund helps light up Darley By Ewen McRae Darley is set to benefit from a statewide investment in safety upgrades, following a government announcement last week. The state government has awarded $99,000 to Moorabool council to tackle community safety concerns through the Public Safety Infrastructure Fund. The funds will go towards the Jonathan Drive Public Lighting Project. Moorabool council is one of 14 Victorian councils sharing in $1.8 million in funding
under the latest grant round, following a highly competitive application and assessment process. Installation of public lighting along 350 metres of the shared path on Jonathan Drive in central Darley well help to increase public use, enhance lines of sight and improve perceptions of safety on the path and open spaces connected to the path. Local MP Steve McGhie said the investment was much needed in the community and he hoped it would have wide-reaching positive
Bellissimo poetry Springside West Secondary College may have only introduced Italian classes this year, but they’re already having an impact. The school entered 73 students in a statewide Italian poetry competition run by Swinburne University recently, and while several students received special commendations, the efforts of two stood out. Year 7 student Christian came fourth in his section, while Isabella took out the top prize for year 8. Italian teacher Trish Testa said it was a proud day for the school and students. “Poetry is pretty important in the Italian language,” Ms Testa said. “So this was an opportunity for the students to challenge themselves, and to get this sort of recognition for the work the students have done is great. “These kids worked towards this for four weeks, some kids took time out of their lunchtime to get help with it, so they really applied themselves and got the results.”
Ms Testa said the performances showed the young school, which is nearing the end of its second year, was doing plenty right. “We’re really serious about what we offer here at the school … we want to give these students opportunities like this as often as we can.” Ewen McRae

streetscape works, as well as urban design projects that will improve perceptions of safety. It continues a good record of investment for Melton and Moorabool from the fund in recent years, with government grants contributing to new lighting at Lake Caroline, graffiti prevention in Melton, security upgrades at Gordon Football Club, and youth crime prevention programs across the past two years. In total, more than $1.1 million fom the fund has been invested in 22 projects in Melton and Moorabool.

22 October 2019 Melton City Council Community News
FREE green waste disposal
Mayor’s Message
Cr Bob Turner As my current term as Mayor draws to an end, it’s timely to reflect on some of the highlights we’ve shared over the past 12 months. I am extremely proud of Council’s accomplishments and the positive outcomes we achieved for our community. I’ve had the privilege of welcoming hundreds of new residents to our City; and acknowledged the achievements of our local sports people, volunteers and young people through Council’s awards programs.
Did you know that in November and December, City of Melton residents can dispose of household green waste for free? With spring comes sunshine, and the urge to prune, plant and potter about in the garden. It’s also the perfect time to clean up your property before the fire season starts. In a bid to divert organic waste materials from landfill, Council is again offering City of Melton residents the opportunity to dispose of household green waste at the Melton Reycling Facility for free. Simply bring your clean green waste to the Melton Recycling Facility along with proof of residency and the usual fee will be waived.
Conditions apply •
Green waste only. No mixed loads.
•
Limbs and branches should be less than 30cm in diameter.
•
Proof of residency required (rates notice, driver’s licence, tenancy agreement or utility bill).
•
No commercial operators, commercial loads or trucks are permitted.
Details Where: Melton Recycling Facility, 33 Ferris Road, Cobblebank When: Friday 1 November - Tuesday 31 December 2019 Open seven days a week, 8am to 4:30pm, except on Christmas day. For further information contact 9747 7200, or visit: melton.vic.gov.au/greenwaste
We’ve completed of a number of major community infrastructure projects, including Westwood Drive road and bridge; Caroline Springs Leisure Centre and Sub-regional Tennis Facility; City Vista Sports Precinct; Kurunjang Community Hub; and playspaces at Hannah Watts Park, Bill Cahill Reserve and Arnolds Creek.
These projects were delivered as part of Council’s biggest capital works program to date, and complement more than 120 community services, programs and events delivered to local residents. It’s been a jam-packed year, I’m sure you’ll agree. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me during my term as Mayor. It’s been a real pleasure and I’ll reflect on my time at the helm with great fondness. Now, I look forward to working with our next Mayor, my fellow Councillors, Council officers and the community, to create an even brighter future for our City. To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au
Watts Ward
Cr Michelle Mendes Spring certainly turned on the great weather last week when thousands of residents came out to enjoy Lakeside Alive in Caroline Springs. Held around idyllic Lake Caroline, it was great to see so many people delighting in the roving entertainment, kids’ activities and food trucks. Council strives to deliver quality events that create a sense of pride and belonging throughout our City. One such event, our annual Djerriwarrh Festival, is just around the corner, and will be held at Melton Recreation Reserve on Saturday 9 November. This year’s festival promises more exciting kids’ activities and live performances than ever. There will be artisan market stalls, food trucks, pet expo, a big bonfire and a spectacular fireworks display.
Headlining performers, Sneaky Sound System, are not to be missed, so I encourage everyone to come along, soak up the atmosphere, and celebrate everything that makes the City of Melton great. It was a pleasure to see so many local residents and community groups share their project ideas at our 2020/2021 Budget Engagement session earlier this month. This was a great opportunity for residents to discuss their ideas with us directly and put their projects on Council’s radar. I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to present their ideas. I was blown away, and can’t wait to see some of these great initiatives come to fruition. Please feel free to contact me about Watts Ward or Council related issues on 0437 249 824 or at: michelle.mendes@melton.vic.gov.au

Dementia support for all For a person living with dementia, it’s easy to be the subject of discrimination, even if not intended. Chief executive Belinda Scott says Djerriwarrh Health Services has a vital interest in helping people affected by dementia, strongly supporting this year’s Dementia Action Week theme: ‘Dementia doesn’t discriminate. Do you?’.
A
ccording to an article from Dementia Australia, discrimination can happen in a number of ways. • People with dementia may be ignored or dismissed from conversations. • Sometimes, without even being conscious of it, a carer may be addressed rather than the person living with dementia – as if they are not there. • Often assumptions are made about the capacity to contribute towards conversations, and to make their own decisions. • They may start to be excluded from social occasions with family and friends – not deliberately but possibly out of not knowing how to include them. Djerriwarrh Health Services has a specialised Dementia Support Nurse in the Community Nursing team. Belinda says the nurse visits clients in their own homes. “Holistic assessments, and information, support and education for both dementia clients and carers is provided during visits,” she explains. “If necessary, the nurse may also refer clients to other health professionals. “This positive, proactive approach to living with dementia will help clients to live as long as possible in their own homes.” Djerriwarrh Health Services Dementia Support team also hosts “Coffee and Conversation”, a monthly gathering to provide support to carers and those with

a diagnosis of dementia, and a valuable chance to talk with others on the same journey. Held from 10.30am-12.30pm on the second Monday each month (excluding public holidays) at Darley Neighbourhood House in Jonathan Drive, Coffee and Conversation welcomes new visitors. Attendees at the Coffee and Conversations might hear from guest speakers, may hear about others stories or just have a chance to have a chat with others who are facing similar challenges living with dementia. Djerriwarrh Health and Moorabool Shire Council have established a Dementia Alliance which aims to improve dementia awareness within the Bacchus Marsh community, reduce associated stigma, and develop a dementia-friendly community. The concept of a dementia-friendly community is one that enables those with dementia to find their way around and be safe; have access to local facilities that they are used to attending; and where they are known and assisted to maintain social networks. The Bacchus Marsh Dementia Alliance is supported by Dementia Australia. For further information, call the Community Nursing team on 5367 9676. The Fit Station helps change lives Kelly Dennis, the founder of The Fit Station Caroline Springs, has good reason to feel chuffed right now. She recently joined mums in business from all over the country where she placed third in the Victorian Business Excellence category at the glamorous shindig for the 10th annual St George Banking Group AusMumpreneur Awards.
P
art of a national cohort of nearly 670,000 working women – nearly half of whom are mums of young children – Kelly is immensely proud to be counted among the talented, enterprising and hardworking group who have joined the AusMumpreneur Network. “I am extremely honoured to have received this award amongst such an amazing bunch of business women,” Kelly says. “We love what we do at The Fit Station and to be able to change and make a difference in so many people’s lives is an honour. Mums especially have the chance to do something for themselves and know they can have their kids come along with them at no extra charge in a safe and welcoming environment. “The calibre of the women at this event was nothing short of amazing. Mums are doing amazing things and I am so proud to be a part of this.” Created to support Aussie entrepreneurs such as Kelly, AusMumpreneur Network was co-founded by Peace Mitchell and Katy Garner who are thrilled to drive the number one community for mumpreneurs. “These awards are all about recognising
the growing number of mums who are achieving outstanding business success and balancing that with motherhood,” Peace says. “We are delighted that Kelly has been recognised with this award. She has created an outstanding business and is an inspirational role model and ambassador for mums in business everywhere.” Katy agrees and adds: “The awards show the passion of women who want to fulfil their entrepreneurial dreams as well as be great mums.” Stuart Zalunardo from St George Bank also sings the praises of mumpreneurs. “St George Bank is keen to support Australian entrepreneurs like Kelly Dennis,” he says. “I was blown away by the entrepreneurial spirit of the award winners and am very confident they will inspire other mums considering starting their own business.” The Fit Station Caroline Springs, 4/24 Eucumbene Drive, Ravenhall. Service with a spark at Battery World Launched in Melton just eight weeks ago, Battery World is already solving problems and helping customers get the best bang for their buck. Battery World is known for its full range of batteries for every application but, as manager Steven Iddles says: “It’s the service we provide, not just the products, that give our physical and online stores a leading edge.”
S
teven tells of a recent transaction that exemplifies the service standards typical of the Battery World crew. “A couple had recently bought a brand-new off-road camper with two large, deep cycle batteries that let them down on their adventure,” Steven says. “We removed both batteries and completed a full analysis – taking the entire day due to the size of the batteries. We then refitted them back into the camper, presenting evidence of cell failure of one of the batteries so they could return them under warranty. We also noted a potential charging problem with the internal system. “They were surprised that we had gone to so much trouble for a free service, but that actually sums up what we are trying to achieve – to be a known and trusted business.” By the way, those deep cycle batteries the couple needed are available throughout spring at discounted prices. Other products/services include: • Battery testing • Standard and complex battery fitting • 24-hour roadside assistance • Marine and boat battery assistance • Camping and caravan battery set-ups • Dual battery set-ups • Specialised battery builds • Educational and training events • Assistance for corporate clients and business-to-business solutions • Free next-day home delivery for

purchases over $50 • Members Discount Cards Full battery testing and analysis is free – whether the batteries are from Battery World Melton or not; and installation is also free for most vehicles. Steven says Battery World has an
award-winning national recycling program too. “Simply drop into our store to recycle or responsibly dispose of dead batteries. We also assist with the recycling or disposal of old mobile phones, cordless tools, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), and all chargers.”

A welcoming place for all pensioners Where could a pensioner in Melton go to enjoy a game of indoor bowls, pool, darts or bingo – accompanied with tea, coffee and biscuits – for the princely sum of 50 cents? Or what about a morning of line dancing – again for just 50 cents? Or having a strong community voice on pensioner issues? • Tuesday afternoons: Cards, bowls, darts, pool, crafts – or listen to music … read a book • Friday mornings: Line dancing, pool and darts • Friday afternoons: Bingo (eyes down 1.45pm) • First Friday evening of the month: Bring-a-plate dance ($3) • May: An annual birthday lunch • July: Annual Christmas in July event • December: The annual ‘real’ Christmas Lunch Throughout the year, there are day trips to such places as the Puffing Billy and Caribbean Gardens, and even five-day trips – for example, to Adelaide – are organised. Every month or bi-monthly, depending on numbers, members can enjoy trips to the casino. As part of its fundraising efforts, the association is holding its annual fete to coincide with this year’s Djerriwarrh Festival on Saturday, November 9. There’ll be bargains on plants, cake stalls, a white elephant sale and tombola along with a sausage sizzle and cold drinks.

Delivering passionate dental care A dad who now feels unashamed to be in selfies with his children … A young girl whose repaired teeth gave her confidence to pursue becoming a model … A steak-loving man who can now tuck into one with gusto … They all have something – or someone – in common: Dr Nabil Ishak, principal dentist at Melton Dental Group.
D
r Ishak has been delivering high-level dental care to his community for more than 30 years – in fact, he’s now treating the grandchildren of his original patients. He says that this continuity of service to one town is relatively rare these days, and counts it an asset to both his practice and his patients. “Our team has been able to form and maintain great doctor-patient relationships over the years, which is a testament to not just satisfaction with the skill we bring, but also the ability to potentially change our patients’ lives,” Dr Ishak says. “It’s a privilege to offer the highest quality dental treatments, especially in the area of cosmetic dentistry, where we see patients gain the ability to smile confidently, without embarrassment. “Another life change we see is in the extremely anxious and scared patients who come to trust and even ‘love’ coming to the dentist. It’s our forte.” As well as general dentistry for the entire family, the clinic has a comprehensive range of preventative, restorative and cosmetic dentistry. This includes dental implants and All-on-4 permanent dentures, along with braces, veneers and whitening. Dr Ishak addresses the issue of anxiety some have towards all-things dental, to the point they might avoid the dentist for years. “The last thing any dentist wants is for people to neglect their oral health, so we

offer Sleep Dentistry, which is of great benefit to anxious patients, including children. “It all takes place in the chair, with sedation administered via IV. Patients don’t actually sleep but enter a relaxed sleep-like state, still able to respond to directions. They’re unlikely to remember the treatment afterwards. “General anaesthetic can also be administered, in cases such as implants or
surgical extractions of wisdom teeth.” A recent patient of Sleep Dentistry says, “I couldn’t be any happier... You made me feel at home with the relaxed atmosphere.” Although highly specialised and experienced, Dr Ishak and his team don’t stand still. They regularly attend seminars, lectures and courses to keep abreast of the latest in dental techniques and technologies in Australia and abroad. The practice provides on-the-spot health
insurance claims, is a Members First Preferred BUPA provider, bulk bills through the government child dental benefit scheme and offers Afterpay, Zip Pay and Open Pay options. Experience a Motown moment Motown Barbers in Sunbury is way more than your average barber shop. Yes, it has all the trims, cuts, shaves, colours, grooming and hot towels that any man would expect. Yes, the shop is fitted out with a bit of urban grunge, wooden floors and sharp retro-modern chairs – all designed to relax a man. But where Motown Barbers transcends the norm is in their visionary Learn, Earn & Shine program.
O

It’s great to see our clients relax, absorb the vibe, and get more from the experience than a haircut, beard trim or shave. “We’re like a barber shop from older, simpler times, when a man and his barber had conversations, discussed current affairs and, on a deeper level sometimes, talked about themselves and life.” Domenica also believes clients, generally your average hard-working man, should
definitely indulge in some me-time. From 4-7pm, every third Thursday of the month, the shop offers the special Date Night With Motown. “Clients get the whole hog: hot towel face-wrap, a neck and shoulder massage, hair wash, a foot soak, and all the barbering services needed. It’s three hours of pampering, with drinks and nibbles in a social setting.
“Even if it’s not for a date, that sort of luxury makes you feel a million dollars. We guarantee any man will leave feeling buffed and relaxed.” If you have aspirations to become a barber and want to learn more, Domenica welcomes you to contact Avante Education on 1300 766 228 or visit the Avante Education Skills Training Centre Unit at Unit 3, 49-51 Horne Street, Sunbury.

wner Domenica Kemp explains the program and how it emerged. “I wanted to help young creative kids who found school wasn’t working for them, the ones who didn’t want to follow a traditional trade or academic pathway. The original vision felt almost a calling,” says Domenica. “So we offer young creative males a opportunity to become part of Motown, a chance to learn and study and earn an income at the same time. “Our current barbering team has come from Learn, Earn & Shine. They each found a pathway for their creativity, learned heaps of technical, life and social skills, earned money and became better communicators along the way. And if they go on to start their own business, that might be the way they choose to ultimately Shine.” But as well as learning the craft of barbering, Domenica says that program participants learn about themselves and expand in the ‘self’ areas – esteem, worth, respect and love. “Motown is an emotionally safe place for men to land, whether as a staffer or client.

anager Rebecca Dietz says there’s a great sense of pride in what Galli Restaurant offers. “We love seeing groups of friends and families come in because we know we can deliver a satisfying experience on all levels,” Rebecca says. “Our chefs create interesting dishes, many remaining on the menu for a long time because they’re firm favourites, and others that respond to changing trends. “The chefs turn their hands to creating a special Christmas menu in the lead-up to the big day, making it a great time to gather with work colleagues, family and friends in an atmosphere of good cheer. “And, of course, Galli Winery’s own multi-award-winning wines are another big attraction any time. “A tip for the wine buffs: the grapes are grown according to organic viticulture principles, in the rich soil of Sunbury and Heathcote.” Private dining rooms can be booked out for Christmas functions, and any time of the year for christenings, corporate affairs, weddings and work do’s – and everything in between. Rebecca is very happy to discuss menu options and organise everything to make it hassle-free, with the focus always on “what our customers want”. Space, style and comfort are immediately on show when you enter this dual-residency family property. The main dwelling consists of four large bedrooms (main with large en suite with corner spa and walk-in robe). Multiple living zones provide options when it comes to spreading out – the kids can hang out in the rumpus room while you relax in the separate lounge room. A timber kitchen boasts a list of luxuries including 900mm stainless-steel appliances and dishwasher. A separate guest retreat under the roofline offers privacy, space and comfort. With its own entry, the retreat comprises kitchen, two bedrooms, en suite and open living/dining space.
Downsizers or first home buyers will be attracted this impressive contemporary house. It offers a low maintenance lifestyle with all the modern features you could ask for – ducted heating, split-system, lock-up garage and landscaped outdoor spaces. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe and en suite, the remaining thee bedrooms all have buit-in robes and share a central bathroom. Spacious open living and meals spaces are anchored by a gallery-style kitchen with stone benches, stainless-steel Blanco appliances and dishwasher. The property is within close proximity to all levels of schooling and parks.

Melton Celebrating 2 years in Melton City. Thank you for the continuing support from our local community. “From the beginning Avin came in prepared and well knowledge of our suburb’s selling results. He gave us honest information on our selling potential and what type of house presentation set up would best benefit our chances of successful sale. He provided excellent open house feedback straight after each showing and also a weekly report on our selling campaign feedback and online analytics. Avin told us from the beginning that as he was aware of our sale price expectations, he would not bring us offers unless he know they were going to be seriously considered and worked to get the right offer before coming to us which we appreciated. Within a month our house was sold. Very happy with the service we received and would recommend to others.”
“Cameron and his team were great to deal with, the team jumped through hoops and bent over backwards for the sale of my house.

Harcourts Melton priced my house perfectly and went over and above for me to get my asking price.”

Melton has work to do if it’s to secure a second straight win to start the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west season. After a brilliant batting performance in round one, the Lions were less than impressive on Saturday. It’s left the Lions on the back foot after day one of their match against Mt Waverley, which was interrupted by rain. Just 52 overs were bowled, as rain late in the day halted both sides. Lions coaching director Anthony Gale said it was a messy day. “We started on time and they made it to just before tea before the first rain delay. “There were then interruptions at different stages. The wicket was fine. The Lions were sent in and it was hard work as they were bowled out for 136. A below par score on a normal day, it was even more disappointing after the start the Lions had. “It wasn’t what we were after, Gale said. “We were 2-90 at the tea break and going well. Nathan Taylor got 62 and Shehan Hirudika got 49 but that was it. “That’s 100 of our score and they were the only two to get starts. “To have just two guys score over 10, makes it difficult. Gale said their guys didn’t take the time to get themselves in. In round one, the Lions had two batsmen make contributions after being in trouble early. Gale said getting consistency would be a
focus of the side in the next couple of weeks and with it would bring confidence. Mt Waverley faced three overs and will resume at 1-7, needing another 130 runs for victory. Gale said they needed to get some early wickets on day two. “The first hour sets it up next week, he said. “It will be difficult to defend and the boys will have to bowl well. “[Brad] Jones is a really good bowler and Dilshan [Kanchana] is new to the club and is an unknown quantity with the ball. “He bowled well last week. “We have to make the first 15 to 16 overs count. While the first XI are in trouble after day one, their fourth XI is in control after a remarkable single-handed display from Mohan Singh. Singh made 203 of the Lions’ 253 runs in a stunning batting display which included 16 fours and 11 sixes. The final wicket produced 106 runs, with Singh making all 106 of them. Gale said speaking to president and fourth XI captain Kevin Vernon, he said it was incredible to watch. “It’s an amazing effort, he said. “Kev said in 50 years of cricket he had never seen someone hit the ball so cleanly. “It blew me away looking at the score card.

SPORT Lions remain undefeated despite poor bowling Darley was happy to come away with three points after an average performance against Wendouree in the Ballarat Cricket Association. The Lions, who entered the match undefeated, were hoping to put it all together with the bat and ball. Instead, a poor bowling performance put them behind the eight ball early in the day. When rain set in during the Lions’ innings, it changed the equation for a win. In the end, they had to settle for a draw. Lions coach Brian Wheelahan said they would take the three points, considering the way they played. “It was a pretty scratchy performance to be honest,” he said. “They are a class outfit and they batted really well.
“We had them at 2-160 and it wasn’t looking great and they were halfway to a decent total. “We had a chat after the game and we weren’t happy with how we bowled.” The Lions fought back late and restricted Wendouree to 4-195 off 47 overs. Harry Killoran took three wickets to help reduce the flow, while Ryan Ali and Rahmatullah Khwaja bowled tightly. The Lions had a delayed start to their innings because of rain. With the sides coming on and off the field a number of times, the umpires reduced the Lions innings to 33 overs. They still needed 196 for victory, while Wendouree needed to bowl them out to claim the points. The Lions finished 5-114.
Wheelahan said when the game was reduced, they decided to play out for the draw. “We lost some wickets that if they were playing their natural game, we wouldn’t have lost them. “We decided to play for the draw and we remain undefeated. “If you had offered me that at the start of the season we would have been undefeated, I would have taken it.” West Indian Danza Hyatt showed no signs of jet lag, scoring 73 not out in his first game of the season. “He showed his class and dominance,” Wheelahan said. The Lions remain on top of the ladder, percentage ahead of Wendouree.
United’s missed chance By Lance Jenkinson It was a tale of two halves for Western United in a pulsating 1-1 draw with Perth Glory in its home A-League opener at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday. In stark contrast to a week earlier, United came out lifeless, lacking imagination and lucky to be on level terms at half-time, but Mark Rudan’s team re-grouped after the break and showed the serious attacking threat it possesses in an impressive second 45 minutes. Panagiotis Kone, the first of United’s marquee signings, brought the game to life with an unforgettable first United goal on Australian soil in the 49th minute. The crowd rose to its feet in unison when Kone’s long range curling strike evaded the out-stretched arms of Perth Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy and slammed into the back of the net. It is a goal that will be replayed over and over again and one for the 6888 spectators in attendance to say ‘I was there for that’. United right winger Josh Risdon was pleased with the response of his team after a lacklustre first half. “The first half obviously wasn’t the best,” he said. “It was pretty sloppy on our behalf and we couldn’t really keep the ball too well and we sort of got trapped in our own half. “I thought in the second half we responded very well. “We put them on the back foot and created a lot of chances. “A brilliant goal by ‘Pana’ there and we could’ve pinched a goal at the end there.” Western United had a swathe of opportunities to add to its goal tally in the second half. The always busy Alessandro Diamanti had a long range effort parried away by Reddy. Striker Besart Berisha thought he scored for United, only to be ruled offside, much to the displeasure of the home fans. Young substitute Dylan Pierias came the closest, chipping the keeper only for the ball to drop on to the crossbar. Instead of doubling its lead, United coughed up its advantage. Kristian Popovic, the son of Glory coach Tony, made United rue their missed chances when he scored from a header after some silver service from Neil Kilkenny in the 76th minute. United goalkeeper Filip Kurto had little chance to stop the powerfully struck Popovic header. Despite his inability to keep a clean sheet, Kurto was one of United’s best players, making a number of spectacular saves. “He was the goalkeeper of the year [for Wellington Phoenix] last year and he’s been outstanding for us,” Risdon said. “It’s really good as a defender to know you’ve got someone in goals who can get you out of sticky situations. “He’s been immense.” 32 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 22, 2019

Just one match got a result due to the weather. Despite the positive start, Wheelahan said they had a lot of improvement to come. “To get through unscathed is terrific, we have good depth and are in a good position with still a lot of errors to work on. “We have not put out a consistent, polished performance with the bat and the ball. “We will learn from that and next week we will regroup and get back to the 80 overs.” The Lions will get Lachlan Herring back from suspension, while Anthony Taylor is also expected to return. They are taking a cautious approach with Ben Longhurst as he recovers from a calf injury. Tara Murray

Baseball
North Western Titans’ fightback against Ormond Blue fell just short in Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. Looking for their first win of the season, the Titans were on the back foot after falling six runs behind in the third innings. Despite scoring 10 runs from the fourth innings onwards, the Titans lost 11-10. The Titans’ women’s side had a bye.

Eynesbury got its second win of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield season. The Eagles made 8-173 from its overs against Romsey with captain-coach Tristan Francis top scoring with 32. The Eagles then bowled Romsey out for 99. Kone had some of the more noteworthy chances for Western United in the second half. Those chances came through his willingness to present for teammates and get into dangerous positions. He was one of a few United players frustrated not to find a winner. Connor Pain was superb on the left wing, while Diamanti’s class shone through. “Diamanti is obviously a world class player,” Risdon said. “He’s got 360 vision.” Risdon is pleased with the look and feel of Western United early in the season.
The cohesion for a newly constructed team is a credit to the work of Rudan, his coaching staff and the players willingness to buy in. “We’re building as a team,” Risdon said. The firsts keep coming for Western United in its inaugural season. United will play its first local derby against Melbourne City at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday at 6pm. Risdon believes three Melbourne derbies – contested between United, City and Melbourne Victory – have added more excitement around the A-League in this city.

Hoppers Crossing made 3-165 from its overs, with Melton Centrals only able to manage 7-119 in reply. Caroline Springs sits second behind Hoppers Crossing, while Melton Centrals is sixth and St Anthony’s seventh.

Frustrating start to the season for the Falcons It’s been a frustrating start for Caroline Springs in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Division 4 Charles Clark Shield season. After a disappointing round one performance, the Falcons put out a much better effort on Saturday against Melton Centrals. The Falcons looked on track for the win, but having lost 45 minutes due to rain delays, the game ended in a draw. New Falcons captain Kane Twentyman said it had been a clunky start to the season. “In round one against St Andrews, we felt like we didn’t have enough runs on the board,” he said. “Braiden Gale was really solid at the top of the order, but there weren’t many helpers. “It was important to back up this week and we put some things in place in regards to run rates. “It was a really good improvement. I think we were the only game to play right to 6.30pm. “We didn’t get the result one way or the other, which was disappointing.” The Falcons made 6-178 from their overs, with star batsman Gayashan Weerasekara top scoring with 57.
A late partnership between Kane Sevior (49 not out) and Lucas Blackman (22 not out) pushed the total up. The Falcons did a good job with the ball early and had Centrals in trouble at 7-60. Twentyman said they tried everything to get those last three wickets. Centrals finished 7-95 with the game ending in a draw. “One of their openers got off to a good start and then the rain came,” he said. “There was a 25-minute rain delay and then we got him cheaply. “We had them 7-60 and threw the ball round to try and find a wicket. “There was a good vibe.” Despite the difficult start, Twentyman said it was all positive at the club. The skipper joined the club from Sydenham-Hillside in the off season. He said he moved away from the Storm, looking to provide an on-field leadership role in a first or second XI side. “There’s a really young bunch of players and the under-15s and under-17s are seriously talented young men.
“The opportunity to work with them is great. It’s been pretty positive and well received. “There’s things in place and they are hungry to succeed. We’ll look to get some early wins and put pressure on the other sides. “Finals is always the aim, I’m excited to see how we go.” In division 3, Sydenham-Hillside defeated Seabrook. The Storm made 7-170 before restricting Seabrook to 9-126. The Storm are two fron two. In division 5, Melton South Royals lost to Sunbury. Chasing 9-132, the Royals were bowled out for 97. Rain wrecks Burras’ quest By Tara Murray Rain halted Diggers Rest Bulla’s quest for three straight wins in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Having started the season in fine form, the Burras were keen to continue that against Sunbury United on Saturday. While the Burras played some good cricket, in the end they had to settle for a draw when the rain continued to fall. Burras playing coach Rasika Batepola said it was set up to be a cracker of a game before it was called off. “They had two of their best batters at the crease and we have a good bowling attack,” he said. “The ground was pretty quick and they had the extra pressure on them batting second. “We thought we had enough runs on the board.” The Burras were bowled out for 174 with two balls remaining. Batepola said they could quite easily have had another 30 or 40 runs on the board. The Burras lost a number of wickets in the last 10 overs as they were looking to push the run rate. Upul Fernando top scored with 57, while Sumanjan Fernando made 44. With the rain normally missing Diggers Rest, Batepola said he thought they would be able to finish the game but it wasn’t to be, with United finishing 2-36. Despite the draw, Batepola said he was still happy with how they performed. He said the work they had done over the past couple of years was starting to show through. “To have won would have been good, but we’re still unbeaten,” he said. “We’ve been playing well together as a team and not playing as individuals. “The last couple of years we’ve gained an understanding of each other and this year things have settled down. We’re going hard at it.” Batepola said they were benefiting from the growth in Diggers Rest, with a number of new residents coming to the club. “In five years’ time the club is going to be big.” Meanwhile, if everything goes to plan, the Burras will have some big guests at training on October 31. Batepola said he was hoping some members of the Sri Lankan T20 team will be in attendance at the club on that night. He said the players themselves were keen to come down, but it would depend on other factors. Anyone is welcome on the night and to talk

to the club’s special guests. It was a tough weekend across the grounds, with just one McIntyre Cup match being completed – Gisborne defeating St Anthony’s. Gisborne made 7-231 before restricting St Anthony’s to 8-162. Cameron Clayton was 85
not out for the Saints. Romsey was on track for victory against Riddell. Romsey was 2-144 in reply to Riddell’s 192. Woodend was 0-3 in reply to Bacchus Marsh’s 8-190.
Lions prove too strong for Cannons Bacchus Marsh Lions have opened their account in the Country Basketball League north-west competition. After a disappointing first-up match, the Lions put out a much better performance on Sunday against the Castlemaine Cannons. Lions co-coach Jeff Feben said they were much happier this week with the 104-95 win. “There was a big difference between the way we played this week and last week,” he said. “They were quality opposition. They beat Maryborough last night. “We were down early, they led by 11 points before we had scored. We were a bit slow out of the blocks. “We were able to fight our way back.” Scores were level at quarter-time, with the Lions leading by five points at the main break. Scores were again level at the last break. The star for the Lions was Billy Feben, who scored 41 points. His father said it was good to have him back on the scorers’ list, after a below par opening match. “Bill didn’t seem to miss,” he said. “They tried their best to stop him. It was one of those games that he found his spot and he was able to hit shots. “It’s good to see him back to that sort of form, we will need it.” Feben was well supported by Jordan Kirk with 21 points and Max Beaumont with 17 points. Jeff Feben said their bigs provided plenty of support. He said the performance of Matt Parker, who scored nine points, was also impressive. “We brought Matt on near the end and he was able to consolidate the win with a couple of big threes. “It’s good to see Matt do that. It makes him more comfortable within the team.” Feben said it was good to see a big home crowd being entertained with the high-scoring game. He said hopefully they would continue to see big crowds throughout the season. The Lions face a winless Kyneton this weekend at Kyneton.
