Key link to fire relief Western suburbs residents have been digging deep to help out their country counterparts facing devastating losses in the bushfire crisis crippling communities around Australia. Melton and Moorabool residents have joined those from across Melbourne’s west in supporting a range of bushfire relief measures, including the provision of urgent food and supplies. Much of the relief has been trucked and shipped to fire-devastated communities from Bairnsdale to Mallacoota by Foodbank Victoria, which has been playing a crucial role in the emergency response. Foodbank’s Yarraville warehouse has been a key link for ensuring donations from the public keen to assist with essential supplies are rapidly reaching stricken areas. Items in high demand have included bottled water, UHT milk, tinned food, cereals and other pantry staples. Almost 1000 cars came through the warehouse to drop off crucial items on January 4, with six military trucks loading up 50 pallets of water and eight pallets of food hampers for East Gippsland. US pop star Lizzo joined the volunteers last Tuesday, making a surprise visit to lend a hand in the midst of her first Australian tour. A Foodbank spokesperson said more than 400 volunteers had helped sort and pack more than 3000 hampers by last Friday. Foodbank is accepting donations to assist its efforts via https://www.foodbank.org.au Foodbank Victoria has been collecting vast amounts of food for bushfire relief.

Melton crime on the rise Crime in Melton has jumped more than 10 per cent, according to the latest figures. According to the Crime Statistics Agency, Melton recorded a 10.3 per cent jump in offences in the year to September 2019, with more than 1100 additional offences than recorded for the previous 12 month period. It’s the first time in three years the crime rate has increased since a record year of 2016. Melton was the hardest hit suburb, with 2115
offences recorded in the 12 month period to September 2019, while Melton South (1864 offences) and Melton West (1810) also recorded high numbers. Of the 11,748 offences recorded in Melton, 4904 occurred in the home, with breaches of family violence orders the biggest offence in the year (1405 offences), followed by theft and criminal damage. Melton area commander Zorka Dunstan said a new online reporting system had contributed to the rise, while high population growth in the area was also a factor.
“We anticipated there would be a rise with this new system, and that’s come to be,” Inspector Dunstan said. “Where previously a lot of crime would go unreported because people may not come into the station, having the online reporting obviously means we see a jump in some areas, but also it means we collect more intelligence and can target areas better. “A lot comes back to population growth, with so many new estates popping up. If you look at our crime compared to 2016, it is down
significantly now, so even with this jump it’s a lot lower than it was previously.” Inspector Dunstan said the high number of family violence offences was always seen as a positive. “It means people are more confident in reporting their breaches or coming to police with these matters,” she said. “We don’t see increases in that as a negative, if anything it means the message is getting out to the community and we’re holding people to account.”

Animal cruelty cases on rise By Ewen McRae Almost daily reports of animal cruelty in Melton were registered with the RSPCA in the past 12 months, according to new figures. The RSPCA received 375 reports of animal cruelty within the Melton council area in the 2018-19 year – an increase of reports for the third year in a row. Melton was the fifth highest local government area in the state for animal cruelty, up from seventh in 2017-18 (325 reports) and 12th in 2016-17 (279 reports).
The RSPCA report stated that neglect made up the highest proportion of reports. Chief executive Dr Liz Walker said Victorians still needed better education on the needs of animals. “Neglect is a form of cruelty, and it is heartbreaking to know so many animals continue to suffer across our state due to lack of basic care, Dr Walker said. “The 2018-19 animal cruelty report statistics clearly illustrate the need for further education and for people to seek help if they are having trouble providing basic care for their animals.
‘‘
Looking at these figures, it’s easy to feel disheartened - Liz Walker

The Moorabool council area also registered a high number of complaints on a per capita basis, with one complaint per 223 residents the fifth highest in the state, up from 25th in the 2017-18 report. Across the state there was a 9.4 per cent increase in the number of animal cruelty
reports, however Dr Walker said it was a sign of higher standards across Victoria. “Looking at these figures, it’s easy to feel disheartened, Dr Walker said. “However, it’s affirming that each individual report made to our inspectorate represents a person who has acted on their concern for an animal. “The individuals who make these reports give voice to vulnerable animals who can’t speak for themselves. Reports concerning dogs and puppies made up the vast majority of reports, followed by horses and cats.

When Dorothy Wallis and Valda Dawson moved to Ingenia Gardens Melton in late 2019 they had no idea they were about to reunite with a long lost family member. It had been 66 years since the two cousins had seen each other, and after almost a lifetime apart it took some time for them to re-establish a connection. A state government fund to improve local soccer facilities has been given a boost, with clubs and the council encouraged to apply for grants. The government recently announced a $20 million addition to the World Game Facilities Fund, which allows for grants of up to $500,000 to improve facilities, pitches and lighting at local clubs. Sports Minister Martin Pakula said it was a chance for local councils and clubs to work with the state government to grow the game. “Soccer has never been more popular at the local level with numbers bolstered in particular by a sharp growth in participation amongst women and girls, Mr Pakula said. “It’s important that clubs have the facilities to match their ambitions to bring the game to a wider audience, and that’s where the World Game Facilities Fund can really make a difference. “From new lights and pitches to female-friendly changerooms, these projects can be game changers. The announcement follows the official opening of the $13 million City Vista Sports Precinct in Fraser Rise in December, which includes two synthetic soccer pitches and two natural grass soccer pitches. The Precinct is the home base of new A-League club Western United, and is also home to Caroline Springs George Cross Football Club. Details: sport.vic.gov.au/ grants-and-funding

Community rallies for fires
Fund for bushfires
By Ewen McRae With fires continuing to rage across the state, the Melton, Moorabool and Brimbank communities have rallied to help where they can. From donating funds, collecting food and water, transporting goods to fire-affected regions, helping and housing injured wildlife, or fighting the fires themselves, the community has been out in force. Melton council has provided staff to the state emergency management team, and risk and performance manager Anthony Hinds said they would continue to help. “Council is committed to providing any resources we can to help those communities impacted by the catastrophic bushfires that are devastating parts of Australia,” Mr Hinds said. “We are actively collaborating with other councils on emergency management and we’re working with the Municipal Association of Victoria to provide a co-ordinated response to the recovery effort. “Our skilled emergency management staff have assisted at an emergency relief centre in Melbourne and at the Orbost Incident Control Centre in East Gippsland. “We are ready to offer continued support to other local government areas during this time of crisis and recovery.” Donations for Foodbank are continually being taken and stored at their Yarraville warehouse, while a number of dedicated volunteers have been taking their own collections of supplies to the Gippsland fire front. Caroline Springs-based A-League club Western United will hold a special fundraiser at its next home game. The club is offering free admission to its match against the Central
A Truganina-based transport company has established a special fund to assist employees and members of the community affected by the Australian bushfires. ComfortDelGro Corporation Australia (CDC) – which operates commuter, school and coach bus services – set up the $250,000 ‘We Care Fund’ last week, after seeing the devastation the fires had caused across Australia. The company said the fund will be used to “assist in fire-fighting efforts and support families with immediate housing and living needs”. In addition, CDC employees who have had to evacuate and/or lose their homes as a result of the fires are eligible for individual grants to assist them to meet their short-term financial needs. CDC chief executive Nicholas Yap said they felt the need to help out through the ongoing bushfire crisis. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and communities who are affected by the bushfire crisis,” Mr Yap said. “We are keen to do what we can to help the families in need. “Our special thank you goes to the emergency services and those who put their own lives in danger to help communities in need.” The fund also supports firefighting efforts by providing paid leave and transport services to emergency service volunteers.

Melton council will trial a new initiative to curb library fines while providing assitance for the less fortunate. The Food for Fines initiative will be trialled in April, with library members being offered the chance to reduce their fines by donating non-perishable food items to a local charity. For each item donated, library members can reduce their fines by $2. The initiative was proposed by Cr Steve Abboushi at the July 2019 council meeting. A council report endorsed running the program on a trial basis for one month this year. The report stated the initiative was designed to encourage lapsed library members to return to the library, encourage the return of long overdue items, and provide valuable support for food relief organisations in the area. “A ‘food for fines’ initiative can also have broader impact in encouraging all community members to donate food, regardless of whether they have a fine,” the report stated. The council said there are 5335 items listed as overdue across all Melton libraries, a further 3885 items are long overdue and listed as lost. The council will receive a further report mid year to evaluate the trial, and look at other options to reduce the negative impact of fines on library members. (iStock)

A record 27 babies were born in a 24-hour period at the newly-built Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital last month. Following the hectic period, Western Health chief executive Russell Harrison said staff were feeling “a little exhausted, but also excited and amazed” at the incredible number of births occurring at the Joan Kirner. The hospital has the capacity to birth 7020 babies per year – from May 15 to December 31, 2019, staff at the hospital birthed 3717 babies, including the record 24-hour period on December 19. The hospital’s divisional director Adele Mollo said, based on the current birth rate, the hospital is projecting a birth rate of just over 6000 – a 6 per cent increase on the previous year. With so many babies born at the Shunshine hospital, it was only fitting that the top baby names for 2019 were revealed there last week. Oliver and Olivia continue to hold the top spot for most popular baby names. Oliver has been the most popular boys name for six years, with 537 little ones given the moniker last year. Jack, Noah, William, Thomas, Leo, Lucas, Charlie, Henry and Ethan rounded out the top 10 names for boys There were 419 new Olivias named last year, the most popular girls name for the second year in a row. Mia, Charlotte, Amelia, Isla, Ava, Chloe, Zoe, Ruby and Harper made up the 10. Visiting the hospital, Acting Attorney General Ben Carroll said he always takes interest in the top names. “The birth of a baby is a wonderful and special time for parents – but settling on what little bub will be named is not always an easy decision,” Mr Carroll said.

Truck fire prompts recycling warning Fire investigators believe the blaze was started by a mobile phone which was incorrectly discarded in the waste. Council acting operations manager Rishi Viner said it was important that all households remain careful about discarding e-waste correctly. “E-waste, or electronic waste, does pose a fire risk which is one of the reasons why it is banned from landfill and all kerbside bins,” Mr Viner said. “It’s important to note that e-waste can and should be recycled at council’s free drop-off point at the Melton Recycling Facility.
“We urge residents to be mindful of how they dispose of all waste. By putting only accepted items in the recycling bin, you will help avoid contaminating the load and ensure more waste is diverted from landfill. “Council’s recycling service is much more effective when residents ensure that only the right things go into the appropriate bins.” It is the second time in less than two years that a council recycling truck has caught fire, with a similar incident occurring in Caroline Springs in February, 2018.

A Melton truck driver had to think on his feet last week, when a fire started in the back of his truck while collecting rubbish. The incident occurred in Brookfield on January 2, when the driver noticed that his truck had caught fire while making collections of household recycling. He found a nearby park to dump the load, before a fire crew attended to extinguish the blaze. The waste was cleared later that day. While the driver was unharmed, the truck sustained some damage. The recycling load had to be sent to landfill because of contamination from the fire.

Swim safe over summer With summer in full swing, a local swim school is emphasising the importance of staying safe around the water. Whether you’re heading to the local pool, down at your favourite beach, or taking a dip in a river, Kingswim Caroline Springs manager Steph Revell said it was important to stay alert and know the risks. “For us in Australia it’s incredibly important to know about water safety,” Ms Revell said. “Up to 85 per cent of us live within 50km of the coast, so it’s essential to learn not just how to swim but also the survival skills that come with that. “If you’re going to the beach or pool or whatever, make sure you have an adult with you if you’re underage, going with a friend so there’s someone to help, and making sure you understand the body of water that you’re going to. “If it’s a river, don’t just jump in, check it for obstructions, if it’s the beach, swim between
the flags and understand the conditions out there. It’s very important.” Ms Revell said they conduct learn to swim lessons for all ages and abilities, from three months old right up to adulthood, and said it was never too late to learn how to stay safe around the water. “We like to educate our parents as much as our children,” she said. “Making sure the parents know what to do if something goes wrong, and getting swimmers confident with their ability goes a long way to preventing any accidents. “It’s still a lot of fun, but it’s very important at the same time.” Ewen McRae

MP looks to the future After stepping down from her ministerial roles in 2018, Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins sat down with Ewen McRae to reflect on a busy past 12 months. We definitely need some improvements in our road system, especially around the Melton Highway and the Calder Highway. Around Calder Park Drive is now a major thoroughfare into those new homes and those precincts. We’re seeing massive growth in Fraser Rise. Only five years ago it had a population of less than 500, and now we’re at about 8500, and so with that population increase we see more cars on the road, and that means we need to be keeping up the investment in our roads and public transport side by side.
End of another year, how are you feeling? I’m feeling positive, but the year has gone by so quickly. I think this month I celebrated nine years as the local member, and I feel like this year has gone the quickest. I think that’s just a sign of how we’re getting on with the job of following through on our commitments. We’ve had some big ones, as well as local ones, that we’ve been working on behind the scenes. Seeing the royal commission into mental health progress, and seeing the first report come out on that has been great to see
Progressing the treaty has been a big thing we’ve been working on over the years, and getting the First peoples assembly elected, which was a goal for this year, and they’ve had their first meeting which is really positive. It’s about setting a new train and a new relationship with aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders here in Victoria, how we can recognise the past and move forward. I think there’s a lot of healing that needs to be done still, and a treaty gives you the steps to do that, but also to give aboriginal people here in Victoria a self determination over their own issues and I guess their own solutions of being able to make their community prosperous going forward. How will having Sunshine designated as a ‘priority precinct’ impact on the Sydenham electorate? How will you leverage the benefits?
(Supplied)
You’ve kept the role as parliamentary secretary of treaty. It’s been a big year on that front, how proud are you of the progress? Jobs, Jobs Jobs. That’s the big one. Part of our problem with parking at Watergardens station is that there’s not a lot of opportunities to get employment locally, and so many families are having to travel into the city to work. The reality is if we have jobs 10-15 minutes down the road it will make a world of difference for people and families in this electorate. I would say about one in five people in my electorate who work full-time have employment engaged through the airport or surrounding businesses, and we would love to see a similar ratio with jobs in Sunshine as well in the future. We’ve seen the opening of the Joan Kirner Hospital in the past 12 months, which is not only growing services for the area, but also employment opportunities.
What benefits for the Sydenham electorate would you like to see from the Sunshine superhub and airport rail link? I’d love to see more investment in future years in our bus linkages into our stations. I think once we’ve got the upgrade happening on the Sunbury line, and the future airport rail link, there’ll be so much opportunity for people to leave their cars at home and go to work on public transport, which means we can put more services on that line. What we want to make sure is that people can leave their car at home and get better access.
What do you see as the biggest challenge for the area? Growth is our biggest challenge by far. We’ve got some great plans in the works and construction underway with the upgrade of the Sunshine Hospital, and the planning we’re doing for the Melton Hospital, so I think we’re doing pretty well in those areas. I think now our focus has to be making sure that we’ve got the roads, public transport and schools in place in time. What are you excited about for 2020?
I’m pretty excited to see the rollout eventually of three-year-old kinder. It’s going to take a while here, we’re saying 2022 might be the year it rolls out in our area, but there may be opportunities for that to occur earlier. But I think that’s a real game changer for the future of our kids, getting Huge growth in the area around Caroline them into kinder earlier is an exciting thing for Springs, Fraser Rise etc, what more needs parents to look forward to. to be done for the area to keep up with I’d also really like to see Sydenham park opened up to the public. infrastructure demand?

Let their imaginations run wild as they re-create their own version of the beach using real shells, rocks, sand and ‘water.’ Experienced art facilitator Lisa will supply all materials and a helping hand. BYO a art smock or clothing you don’t mind getting a little sandy. All children must be supervised by an adult at all times. January 17, 10.30am, Brookside Community Centre, 17 Federation Way, Caroline Springs ■ 0455 326 903 or CatriceL@melton.vic.gov.au
Children with energy to burn are invited to try hip hop dancing these school holidays. Learn hip hop dance moves and combinations including foot work, upper body work, waving, step touch and more. Children are to wear non-restrictive clothing and runners and bring along a drink bottle. It’s on at Banchory Community Centre, 17 Banchory Avenue, Hillside. Mazza claims state record By Tara Murray After a technicality prevented Caroline Springs’ Frank Mazza from earning a state athletics under-16 heptathlon record late last year, he now has the record in his hands. Mazza broke the under-16 hepathlon record in November last year, but with the hurdles height incorrect, it meant the record didn’t count. Earlier this month, he claimed the record as he starred at the Athletics Victoria Vic Multi-event Championships in Bendigo. Mazza said it was good to finally have the record. “I’m really happy I have the record on paper now,” the 14-year-old said. “Last time I scored more points, but the hurdles height was wrong. It was my first senior heptathlon. “It gave me somewhere to base my points off. It really motivated me.” Competing for Keilor-St Bernard’s, Mazza finished with 4497 points in the under-16 age group at the Bendigo event, which also saw him break the venue record for his age group, which was set in 2001. Mazza won every event in the heptathlon, including the 1500 metres which is his weakest event. He recorded an 11 second personal best in that event. The score was enough to see him earn two state records, the under-15 and under-16 heptathlon records. It’s been a big summer for Mazza, as he competes at the senior level for the first time in his career. He is still competing in Little Athletics competitions as well. “It’s kind of weird,” he said competing in both juniors and seniors.

“It’s been hard with a lot of training and a few different trips to compete.” The Maribyrnong Sports College student doesn’t have much time to rest with a couple of big events still to come this season.
Mazza will be the favourite in the state little He is one of eight students from his school selected to compete at the Simplot Games in athletics combined event, which is similar to the heptathlon. America in February. Then he will compete in the nationals in He will compete in the long jump, relay and Sydney. possibly the high jump.

Titans looking to continue their good form North Western Titans are hoping a positive end to 2019 will flow into this year in Baseball Victoria Summer League division 3. Both their men’s and women’s teams finished last year with a win and are hoping that they can continue that winning form. Titans president and men’s player Danny Haymes said their last performance showed what the men’s team could do. “We finished off really well with a good win,” he said. “We finally beat Chelsea, after we had let a lot of games slip when we had played them. “We played a full nine innings and we’re normally let down for one or two innings. “Stuart [Tierney] pitched really well for all nine innings and everyone contributed.” The win was the Titans’ third of the season and kept their finals hopes alive. While they sit bottom, they are just two games behind fourth, with just four games separating second to last. Haymes said the next couple of weeks would define their season. “The next two games are vital for us to stay in
finals contention,” he said. “The next two teams are the teams we’ve beaten this year. “Hopefully we will win more games than we lose and I think we’ll be right. “We’re looking forward to getting back on the park.” Haymes said the side would be stronger in the back half of the season, with a number of players returning to the side which would only help the team improve. The Titans women’s side will be looking to seal a finals berth in division 3 west. The Titans currently sit third. After breaking through for their first ever win in round seven, the Titans have won three further matches. Haymes said the side is full of confidence. “Since they got their first win, they’ve only lost one game since against Sunshine Eagles which are the team to beat. “They aren’t that far off and they have improved. Their hitting is a lot better. “They gelled a lot better in the games before Christmas and they are confident and training
hard.” Haymes said the women’s side can’t let the foot off the pedal in the second half of the season, with a finals spot on the line. He said if things went right, the side could go all the way and win the title, in just their second season. “They believe that they can win every game.” The Titans are also starting to prepare for the winter season, where they will play in the Geelong Baseball Association. In their first year in the competition, the Titans took out the B-reserve title, having started the season in a lower grade. Haymes said they would go up another division this year and were looking to field two teams. He said they would field a stronger team. Tara Murray

Melton still in finals hunt By Tara murray Melton is keeping the pressure on the top six teams as it tries to remain in finals contention in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west competition. The Lions have shown some good signs in recent matches, including a win against third placed Williamstown, to show that they can’t be ruled out of the finals equation. After a solid victory against Endeavour Hills on Saturday, they now sit three points outside the top six. Lions director of coaching Anthony Gale said it was good performance. “We were in a similar position against Altona, before Christmas, and we couldn’t get the job done,” he said. “This time we were able to get the win, which was really good.” Sent in, Endeavour Hills were bowled out for 170 in the final over. Heath Fleetwood took 3-23 off his five overs, as six bowlers took wickets.
Gale said like they have all season, the Lions’ bowling unit had performed well. It comes despite being without skipper and star bowler Brad Jones for a second successive match, having been suspended for three matches for an on-field indiscretion. “Heath has come up for the two one-dayers and has picked up a few wickets,” he said. “Collectively, as a group the bowlers have been playing really well and consistently. It was another strong performance.” Gale said as long as they batted their overs and had some wickets in hand, that they were confident that they could chase the runs down. He was right, as they finished 6-171 with 10 balls remaining. For most of the innings the Lions were in control, before losing 3-11 to go from 3-138 to 6-149. They wouldn’t lose another wicket. Gale said stand-in skipper Nathan Taylor was the key. “We lost a couple of wickets including an established batsman,” he said.
“The key was Nathan. He has batted well the last few rounds. He has scores between 30 and 50 in six of his eight matches, he’s getting starts which is good. “He batted out the innings and got the job done.” Taylor finished 52 not out, with Matthew Stead (40) and Ben MacRae (38) also making solid contributions. The Lions now sit eighth on the ladder with their season well and truly alive. Gale said the next couple of rounds would have a big impact on whether they made finals or not. “The win keeps our season alive,” he said. “If we can string a couple of games together, we’ll be in a good spot. “Snag a couple of wins and all of a sudden we’re back in the top six.” The Lions second XI had a good win. Gale, who made 44 in the win, said they were in a similar position to the top side, with the next couple of weeks to define their season. The thirds and fourths were washed out on Saturday.
It was the Danza Hyatt show for Darley against Brown Hill in the Ballarat Cricket Association on Saturday. The former West Indian international was in everything in a performance which coach Brian Wheelahan said he hadn’t seen before. Wheelahan said Hyatt, who has now scored more than 400 runs at an average of more than 100 this season, had been outstanding throughout. “Danza is a class above,” he said. “It was an unbelievable performance. He made 60 odd and then took four wickets. He changed the game after they got off to a flyer. “He also took a classic catch in the deep and was involved in a run out. It was a pleasure to watch. “Watching him in action yesterday [Saturday] I have never seen anything like it, with someone being involved from go to woe.” Darley won the toss and elected to bat, making 2-122. Hyatt finished 62 not out, with Anthony Taylor and Ryan Ali both scoring 22. Wheelahan said he was unsure whether they had enough runs on the board, with T20s a funny game. “They bowled beautifully to us,” he said. “Any side can beat any side. We weren’t sure if we had enough, but we made it enough.” Brown Hill got off to a flyer and looked on track to get the runs, before Hyatt stood up. He took 4-14 off his four overs to turn the game back in the Lions’ favour. They would bowl Brown Hill out for 80. Wheelahan said they executed their bowling plans. The win sees the Lions remain undefeated on the top of the ladder, 12 points clear of second. Wheelahan said they had spoken at length about what they have to do in the back half of the season after such a strong start to the season. “We need to really set a good platform to launch into the finals,” he said. Rockbank trainer puts his sprinter on the radar You could barely wipe the smile off Richie Caruana’s face after he landed a breakthrough metropolitan victory while securing a spot in the lucrative Mercury80 final on Friday night. The Rockbank trainer took the drive behind his horse Off The Radar and he relished the 1200m sprint, charging home to score in the third heat of the series at Tabcorp Park Melton. He came from off the speed to run over the top of pre-race favourite Call Me Hector, which endured a tough run but battled on to also clinch a place in the final. Caruana, who had only trained 12 winners before Friday night’s triumph, said it was great to now be part of the $50,000 showdown on January 25. “It’s a bit of a thrill being in a race like that – I’ve never been in one. It’s going to be a good feeling,” he said. Caruana only trains a small team of horses part-time, but has had plenty of fun with Off The Radar, which has now won 10 career races. Four of those have been since racing under the

Caruana name. “I didn’t know what he was going to do today, honestly, because he is a bit of a lazy horse, but he can hold his ground for a bit of distance,” Caruana said. “He keeps on going.” Off The Radar clocked 84.3 seconds during
his win on Friday, which was the slowest of the three heats. Always Fast is the clubhouse leader after posting a time of 82.8 seconds, which was slicker than stablemate Liftntorque’s run of 83.4 seconds. The quickest horse of the series scores a $20,000 bonus, with $10,000 paid to the
successful owner(s) and $5000 going to the trainer and driver. The last of the four heats will be run this coming Friday night, January 17. Meanwhile, Sammy Showdown continued his progression towards being an elite squaregaiter with a fifth-straight win in the Allied Express Trot (1720m, NR 70-85). Trained and driven by Myrniong’s Kylie Sugars, the four-year-old was a convincing winner of the $20,000 event, which was the biggest stakes race of his career to date. Sugars was “rapt” with the performance. “He sprinted hard and he sprinted hard to the line,” she said. “I looked over my right shoulder straightening up and I could see Kate (Gath and Majestuoso) coming and I think he heard her too and he kicked again. “But what I really was happy about was at the start, how he accelerated through…” Tim O’Connor

Royals go to the top Tara Murray Melton South Royals did what they had to do to get the points against Jacana in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield. It wasn’t the Royals cleanest or best performance of the season, but they did enough to come away with a 50 run win against the Jaguars. Royals captain-coach Matthew Kozole said the boys did what they needed to with the bat, to make 5-228 from their 40 overs. “It was a good score on a really good wicket,” he said. “There wasn’t much movement for the bowlers and minimal assistance for the spinners. “They did what they needed to do with the bat.” Dean Pirro was the star of the show, making 138 not out. Kozole said the century was a reward for all the hard work that Pirro had put in throughout the whole season. “He batted really well and it was a really good
effort,” he said. “Everyone contributed something. The idea was to get the strike to Dean as he was in form with the bat, so we pushed for singles and rotated the strike.” The Royals were able to restrict Jacana to 9-179 from their overs. Kozole said their performance in the field was only about 75 per cent of what it needed to be. He said they were able to get crucial wickets to halt partnerships when they needed them. “We dropped three or four catches that we should have taken,” he said. “We need to lift if we’re to push for finals.” Zenith Wickremanayaka and Matthew O’Brien took three wickets each for the Royals. A win and shock loss for Sunshine YCW to Sanctuary Lakes has seen the Royals move to the top of the table. Just 10 points separates the top six teams. Kozole said while they were happy with the season so far, the hard work was only just beginning. “We’ve got a couple of good sides coming up the next couple of rounds,” he said. “We’re setting our sights on those two games

to set up back end of the year. “If we can get one win, almost lock up a finals spot and we can push for top spot from there. “The season starts now for us.” Kozole said they still have two players to come back into the side, which would give them a selection headache. The Royals are hosting a fundraiser next Saturday during their game with Gellibrand, to raise money for those affected by the East Gippsland bushfires. The club is still after sporting memorabilia or other items for its auction. Anyone interested in donating can contact the club. In division 4, Melton Centrals got its third win of the season, beating Wyndhamvale. The Falcons made 8-117 from their overs, with Waduwidanalage Rangika taking three wickets for Centrals. Centrals made the runs with four overs remaining, finishing 5-118. Caroline Springs lost to Grand United. The Falcons were bowled out for 119, with Grand United making 6-120 in reply. In division 3, Sydenham-Hillside defeated East Keilor. Sydenham made 151 before bowling East Keilor out for 130.
The inner west is about to get its first taste of Western United in the A-League. United has opted to transfer its blockbuster Australia Day clash with Adelaide United to the VU Whitten Oval in Footscray. It will be the first chance for western suburbs supporters to cheer on Western United in a home game without having to travel to Ballarat or Geelong. United defender Andrew Durante has supported the move, which is aimed at capturing the United fans that find it hard to travel to the country towns and capturing new supporters in the suburbs. “I think it could work,“ Durante said. “It’s a nice little stadium, I think it holds 11,000. “I think it’s good for the club to be able come to areas like this, a little bit more inner west than Geelong and Ballarat and really broaden our fan base. “There’s quite a lot of fans around this area, so hopefully they turn out in numbers, come out to this game and really support us.“ One of the qualms about Western United playing home games at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium is its large size. With relatively small crowds for a big stadium, it has put a bit of a dent on the atmosphere generated by the enthusiastic crowd. A recent United home game at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium, which has a similar capacity to the VU Whitten Oval, generated a much better atmosphere. “I think this [Whitten Oval] is a perfect little boutique stadium to generate some noise and atmosphere,“ Durante said. “At the moment we’re a small club with big ambitions and we’re trying to grow our fan base as quickly as possible and little things like this, coming to different stadiums, can really help us broaden our fan base. “Until our stadium is built [in Tarneit], maybe a bit of this is required, that we do venture around to different areas to maximise our audience.” Durante is adamant the short-term pain of playing in Australian rules football stadiums will be worth it in the long run for Western United players and fans once its new stadium is built at their home in Wyndham.
