Melton will welcome more than 100 new Australians this weekend, as Australia Day celebrations take over the town. Council festivities will take place at the Willows Historical Park on Sunday, including live entertainment by Sonica, a free barbecue, dingoes and reptiles to meet, face painting, kids activities hosted by Bunnings and Melton Men’s Shed, and free coffee and Anzac biscuits. As part of the celebrations, 120 people will be sworn in as new citizens and the 2020 Community Achievement Award winners, including the Citizen of the Year and the Young Citizen of the Year, will be recognised for their work in the community. Melton mayor Lara Carli said it would be a day to celebrate all that is good about Australia. “This is a time to not only celebrate the country we’re so lucky to call home, but the people who help make it so special,” Cr Carli said. “Our citizenship ceremony is always a highlight of Council’s Australia Day event and I look forward to personally congratulating each of our new residents.” Entertainment will begin at 9.30am and the event will conclude at noon. In Moorabool, Australia Day celebrations will run at the Mechanics Institute on Inglis Street, Ballan from 8am on Sunday. Ewen McRae AMELIA, 4

Smoke hits Melton hard Melton experienced some of the worst air quality in the world last week, as smoke haze that blanketed the city hit the west hard. The haze, which came to the city from the East Gippsland bushfires, smothered the city from early in the week, and on January 14 the Environmental Protection Agency categorised the air quality between very poor and hazardous. The EPA says an air quality reading of over 300 is considered hazardous, with the World Air Quality Index saying Melton recorded
a reading of 448 on January 14 and 591 on January 15. Those readings were significantly worse than Delhi in India (167) and Shanghai in China (229) on January 14. Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Dr Brett Sutton said it was important for residents to remain vigilant of the effects of the smoke on your health. “The health effects of smoke exposure are really the worsening of cough, eye nose and throat irritation, and anyone can get that when we’re in moderate to poor air quality,” Dr Sutton said.
“For those vulnerable groups, the over-65s, the under 15s, pregnant women, and people with existing lung or heart disease, it’s really important to limit exposure to the smoke. “I think it’s important to use the EPA website to monitor the air quality in your local area and plan accordingly.” A number of local pools were closed due to the smoke, with recreation facilities in Ballan and Bacchus Marsh closed for several days. Melton council chief executive Kelvin Tori said council staff who worked outdoors had taken precautions throughout the week, and reminded locals to keep an eye on smoke
conditions in coming weeks, as the haze could be in place at other times over summer. “Council has advised staff who work outdoors to take precautions while the air quality is impacted by bushfire smoke,” Mr Tori said. “Staff have been encouraged to take regular breaks indoors or in vehicles, use personal protective equipment such as masks where required, and to follow guidance from the EPA Air Watch website and WorkSafe Victoria. “We would like to remind residents to take extra care when the air quality is rated very poor or hazardous.”

The west loses a radio voice By Tate Papworth A western suburbs institution said goodbye last week. At 12pm on January 16, community radio station Stereo 974 Sunshine ceased transmission. Management at the station confirmed the closure to Star Weekly, but declined to make comment. It’s understood that escalating costs and a lack of funding support led to the closure.
The station had been struggling to secure advertisers for a number of months. Management had been calling on the public to donate in order to keep the volunteer-run station on air. The closure ends a storied history for the station, which was one of the longest established community broadcasters in the state. The station was founded in 1978 and operated in North Sunshine for two decades. It had humble beginnings, initially broadcasting from a shipping container, but
has been on air 24 hours a day, seven days a week since it began transmitting. In 1998 the station moved to its site in Geelong Road, Brooklyn, where it remained until its closure last week. While times have been tough for the community radio station, it still played a vital role for the community. In 2010 it was formally recognised as official emergency broadcaster for the region. In a message posted on the station’s website, general manager Rod Boyd said number of local
councils have published and distributed leaflets and fridge magnets advising residents that they should tune into the station for up-to-date information should an emergency occur. He said there are in excess of 23 major hazardous sites located in the station’s broadcast area. The station also catered for the region’s diverse population with ethnic language programs making up a third of its broadcast time. Melton Community Radio 979fm continues to broadcast.
Water warning as algae bloom takes hold Melton residents are being urged to avoid Navan Park Lake following the detection of a blue-green algae bloom last week. Melbourne Water advised the community of the bloom on January 15, and have erected signs at the site to warn people not to come into contact with the water. Melbourne Water acting manager north west regional waterways, Ben English, said there were many forms of blue-green algae and the species currently present could be harmful to animals or humans. “It’s important that people avoid contact with the water and make sure that it does not come into contact with their skin or eyes,” Mr English said. “Pet owners are advised to take similar precautions and keep their animals from entering the water or from drinking it.” Melbourne Water is working with Melton council to manage the algae bloom and will continue to monitor the site. Blue-green algae occurs naturally in waterways and forms blooms during hot weather, periods of drought or low flow, or where there is an accumulation of nutrients in waterways or water bodies. Algae blooms can remain in place for weeks or even months depending on weather conditions, and contact with the algae may cause skin irritation, nausea and muscle weakness.

Animal refuge ready for fire victims A local animal refuge has been inundated with help, after going on standby for bushfire affected animals in recent weeks. The Coopers Animal Refuge in Bullengarook was put on standby at the start of the month, and has been ready to accept injured animals from bushfire affected areas to help nurse them back to health. With some estimates putting the wildlife death toll in excess of 1.2 billion since the catastrophic fires began, refuge owner Christine Gilmore said the response from the community had been overwhelming. “People just want to help out and help us in
any way they can,” Ms Gilmore said. “Just today we had a lady drop off 300 woollen pouches for animals, we’ve had bags and bags of kangaroo pellets, 40 bales of hay, just things that we need to keep up with the demand. “At the moment there’s no animals coming out of the fire areas, because it’s too dangerous for people to enter the area to search for animals, but we’re ready to go and have lots of space for animals when that time comes.” Other community groups have also stepped up to help out various wildlife workers in the region, including the Ballan Country Women’s Association, which has been sewing cloth
pouches for joeys and other wildlife to be donated to the BADGAR Wildlife Rescue. Ms Gilmore said more people were realising the importance of local wildlife following the bushfires. “People have told me they want to help us, even if it’s not to do with the bushfires,” Ms Gilmore said. “They say they’ve just now realised that what we’re doing is basically having to repopulate some of these species, like kangaroos and koalas. “Whatever we rescue and rehabilitate will be released into the wild eventually.”

Stalker gets nine years jail By Ewen McRae A Melton man who harassed a woman and her partner for nine weeks last year has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison. Nathan Atkinson pleaded guilty in the County Court last month to two charges of stalking, attempted arson, and various firearm offences, after becoming obsessed with a woman he had previously supplied with prescription medication. The woman – who was referred to in court documents by the pseudonym ‘Georgia Biddell’
– had known Atkinson for over three years, but told him in December 2018 that she no longer wished to see him. The court heard that in January 2019, Atkinson began to make persistent phone contact with Ms Biddell and her partner (pseudonym of ‘Isaac Balcombe’), and also regularly parked outside both of their apartments to watch them. The court heard that Atkinson’s stalking escalated over the ensuing weeks, including placing a GPS tracker on Mr Balcombe’s car, cutting the brake lines on the same car, and text
messages from Atkinson to Ms Biddell saying he would stab her boyfriend if he approached him. Atkinson also pleaded guilty to throwing a Molotov cocktail down the driveway of Ms Biddell’s house while she was at home, causing damage to her car, and also firing a gun into Ms Biddell’s house on two separate occasions, and once at Mr Balcombe’s house. Police arrested Atkinson on March 22, and in a search of his apartment found a .22 sawn-off rifle, black face mask, latex gloves and bottles of alcohol spray. In a safe, they found
a hand written note containing Mr Balcombe’s address and also an empty GPS tracker box. In sentencing, Judge Frances Hogan said she had no option but to impose a lengthy jail term. “In the light of deliberate and repeated acts of criminality over a period of nine and a half weeks, there must also be emphasis upon specific deterrence,” she said. “A strong message must be sent to the community through sentencing.” Atkinson was sentenced to eight years and one month in prison, with a minimum of five years to be served before he is eligible for parole.
Having a ball of fun Madelyn Hartley has already experienced the big stage of the Australian Open, and she will be back to do it all again this week. The Taylors Hill 14-year-old is suiting up for her second stint as a ball kid at summer’s biggest tennis event, and while she doesn’t play the game herself she’s still excited to rub shoulders with the greats of the game. “It’s pretty amazing to be up so close to these players,” she said. “(Roger) Federer would be my favourite player. I got to do one of his games last year, and he’s so nice on court and a great player. The atmosphere on Rod Laver for that game last year was just electric, it was a pretty surreal experience. “This year I’m hoping to get a (Rafael) Nadal, (Novak) Djokovich or (Ash) Barty game, it would be great to be on court with some of those guys.” Madelyn worked as a St Johns Ambulance
cadet at the 2018 Open, when she first got the itch to try being a ball kid. It took more than eight months of trials and training against 3000 other hopefuls to land a spot on the Australian Open roster, and while this could be her last year serving the balls to the players, she hopes to stay involved in the Open somehow for a while yet. “I’m looking into doing a third year,” she said. “It’s only 12 to 15 years old for the ball kids, but there’s a lot of other roles like court services and lines people so I’d love to stay involved somehow. “It’s just such a great opportunity and I really recommend it to anyone.” Ewen McRae Madelyn is preparing for her second stint as a ball kid at the Australian Open. Cops swoop, arrest 25 By Ewen McRae A major operation between Moorabool Police and their Ballarat counterparts has seen 25 arrests in recent weeks. The arrests began in late December and involved a series of crimes in the region, including aggravated burglaries, theft of motor cars and the subsequent arson of the vehicles. The crimes are alleged to have taken place between November 2019 and January. Ballarat Crime Inspector Greg Payne said the people arrested were alleged to have committed high-harm offences which caused significant damage to victims and

local community.” Detectives searched over 50 addresses in the region as part of the investigation, resulting in the arrest of 25 people who have been charged, including seven who remain in custody. “Officers right across the Ballarat region are committed to keeping the community safe by holding offenders to account and preventing crime,” Inspector Payne said. “It is essential that the local community understands that the best method of preventing crimes such as theft and motor car theft is by ensuring they follow basic security procedures for their homes, cars and safe storage of property.”

Revamped reserve opens The new look Marlo Reserve is open for business, and already getting plenty of use in the summer months. The reserve was unveiled last month as the latest upgrade project in the municipality, with the upgrades completed as part of a partnership between the state government and council. The council contributed $440,000 to the reserve upgrade, which the state government matched through the Growing Suburbs Fund. Melton mayor Lara Carli said the reserve would become a vibrant community hub for local families and children. “This play space will undoubtedly help improve health, safety and wellbeing outcomes for our residents,” she said. “What was once a paddock has been transformed into a vibrant park that will encourage families and neighbours to enjoy the outdoors and get active. “It’s a shining example of what can be achieved when council, the State Government and the community work together.” As part of the upgrade, a new playground, sandpit, swings, barbecue and exercise stations were added, while there is also a basketball half-court, new shelters, paths and landscaping to brighten up the area. Elsewhere, a $247,500 sports lighting project at Boronia Drive Recreation Reserve in Hillside has also been completed. Ewen McRae

Celebrate Australia Day in the City of Melton
Mayor’s Message
Cr Lara Carli I’d like to take the opportunity to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year. While there’s a lot to look forward to in 2020, it’s difficult to see beyond the devastation our country is currently experiencing. The destruction caused by the bushfires across Australia is shocking and absolutely heartbreaking to say the least. The courage and dedication all the emergency services volunteers have displayed in the face of such terrifying circumstances is beyond admirable. I’m very proud of the support our residents have shown for those who have been impacted by these catastrophic emergencies. These communities have lost everything and need assistance now more than ever. I know many of you are wondering
what you can do to help. At the moment, a number of organisations are advising that the best way to help is to donate money – anything you can spare will go a long way to helping the local residents, volunteers and wildlife fight this battle and recover. Finally, I would like to remind residents about Australia Day celebrations taking place on Sunday 26 January at Willows Historical Park, Melton. Festivities will include live entertainment, a free barbecue, coffee and Anzac biscuits, dingoes and reptiles to meet, and face painting, as well as kids’ activities hosted by Bunnings and Melton Men’s Shed. Like millions of people around the world, I have been deeply affected by the horrific bushfires that have plagued Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia since late 2019. The loss of life, native flora and fauna, is devastating, and there seems to be little respite for residents, firefighters and volunteers. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, especially the firies who have fought tirelessly to save lives and property under hellish conditions. In January 1985, our own community was scarred by bushfires when a devastating blaze tore through Melton, destroying 14 homes, damaging more than a hundred more, and decimating hundreds of acres of land. Those who lived here at the time will remember the swift severity of the fire that, didn’t claim any lives, despite

being fanned by 100 km/h winds. When the danger passed, people from surrounding communities rallied to provide much needed support to those affected by the fire, and now, it’s our turn to support the families and business owners who have lost so much in this current catastrophe. Many of the fire-ravaged areas, depend on tourism to drive their economy. Once the danger passes, I urge residents to repay the generosity shown our community 35 years ago, and visit these towns, support their local economies and help people get back on their feet. Lions’ bowlers strike
Sports shorts Ballarat CA Darley’s winning run continued in the Ballarat Cricket Association after beating North Ballarat on Saturday. The undefeated Lions batted first, making 205 with Hayden Jamieson top scoring with 70. Run scoring machine Danza Hyatt scored another 50. The match went down to the wire. The Lions got the job done, bowling North Ballarat out for 202. Madushanka Ekanayaka took three wickets. The Lions sit 12 points clear on top of the ladder.
By Tara Murray Melton’s bowlers continue to get rewarded in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west competition. The key for the Lions all season, the bowlers have again got the side in a winning position, this time against Bayswater. Melton bowled Bayswater out for just 116 on Saturday. Lions director of coaching Anthony Gale said the bowling group was really making it hard for opposition batsmen. “It was a very good day for the club,” Gale said. “In fairness to Bayswater it was a really slow outfield. That is a 150 score on most grounds. “All the boys chipped in with Dilshan [Kanchana] taking three wickets. “It’s a good score for us to chase.” While it’s been their strength all season, Gale said the younger players had really stepped up in the absence of skipper Brad Jones. Jones is missing the third game of his three game suspension. “We’re without Jones, who is our strike bowler,” Gale said. “He has been the backbone of our attack for the last 11 years. I think it will be good for him to know that he doesn’t have to be the main man all the time. The Lions had to face 12 overs at the end of the day and got through unscathed and will resume at 0-10. The Lions’ second XI also had a good day out, making 357. Nathan D’Antonio, who has come back from the firsts, scored 103. Gale said D’Antonio, who is battling an injury, showed that he belonged in the top side, but had to work his way back into the team. Gale also had a good day, making 99.
Baseball The North Western Titans’ quest for two wins in a row in the Baseball Victoria Summer League division 3 came to an end due to rain. Playing their first game for the new year, the Titans led Chelsea 6-1 when rain ended play. The result is a blow to the Titans’ finals hopes as they remain bottom, 19 points outside the top four. The women’s side had a bye.
CVWCCC Melton Centrals beat St Anthony’s in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community north west B one-day competition on Sunday. St Anthony’s made 2-160 from their overs with Keara Smith top scoring with 43 not out. Centrals made the runs in the final over, finishing 9-162.

SPORT Mercury rising as Stewart takes a stranglehold
Chris Alford guides Fourbigmen on Friday night. (Stuart McCormick)
Emma Stewart looks to have a stranglehold on the final of the Mercury80 after scoring a third win in the four-heat series at Tabcorp Park Melton. And the Cardigan-based trainer also appears well placed to secure the lucrative bonus for connections of Fourbigmen, which set a new benchmark time of 82.1 seconds on Friday night. The fastest winner in the series snares an extra $20,000, half of which is collected by owners and the other half split by the trainer and driver. Chris Alford drove the first heat winner Liftntorque on New Year’s Eve and was at the controls on Friday night as Fourbigmen darted through along the sprint lane to land a convincing five metre victory. “He had a nice run in there behind the leader and the pace was on sort of all the way. He felt
really good and once the run came, he just powered through then,” Alford said. The champion reinsman said he wasn’t bothered if he drove Liftntorque or Fourbigmen in the final. “They’re both nice horses … whichever one they put me on I’ll be happy with,” Alford said. Michael Stanley’s Soho Nolita came home strongly to pip leader Major Exclusive for second, therefore booking a place in the $50,000 final next Saturday night. The qualifiers for the feature from the first three heats include: Liftntorque (Emma Stewart), Van Mara (Andy Gath), Always Fast (Emma Stewart), Gilty Hanover (Kari Males), Off The Radar (Richie Caruana) and Call Me Hector (Matthew Cooper). While his father Ted missed out on reaching the Mercury80 final with Major Exclusive, young trainer Blake Caruana scored his second
Centrals’ winning run
Bacchus Marsh seals its spot in the finals
By Tara Murray Melton Centrals are finally starting to find their groove in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 Charles Clark Shield competition. After one win in the first seven rounds, Centrals have now won their last three matches and moved into finals contention. Centrals skipper Adam Hulett said there were a number of factors that contributed to the slow start, but they were happy with how things were now going. “We’re clicking and we’ve found the balance,” he said. “We’ve got things going.” “We’re putting things together and we’ve got a few more wins. There’s only three more games left. “We would like to win those three remaining games.” On Saturday, Centrals beat bottom side East Coburg in the last of the one-dayers. Centrals batted first and put up a strong 9-198 from their 40 overs. Hulett said they were really happy with that total. “The pitch was really up and down,” he said. “Winning the toss, it’s always a gamble to bat first, but it paid off. “On a wicket like that, the batsmen really have to do their job. It’s more about partnerships in the middle overs and not losing clumps of wickets. “They really put a price on their wickets.” Ross Caldera top scored with 65 at the top of the order with contributions throughout the innings. The bowlers backed up the batsmen, bowling East Coburg out for 118. “The opening bowlers bowled to a specific plan,” Hulett said. “We implemented that last season and it’s carrying through to this season and they executed it really well. “The change bowlers picked up where the opening bowlers left off.” Kieran Bensley and Hashn James took three wickets. Pending a disaster, Centrals have done enough to stay up in division 4 for at least a second season. Sitting seventh and just three points outside the top four, Centrals instead have an eye on finals. Hulett said they found the biggest difference was more consistency across what is an even competition. He said they would love to play finals, but aren’t getting too far ahead of themselves. “We have to win every game if we’re to play finals,” he said. “We play three teams inside the top four and they are all tough games. Hopefully we are
Melton Centrals batsman Ross Caldera. (Damjan Janevski) 203266_10
good enough to make finals after a slow start. “We lost one or two close matches, hopefully they don’t come back to bite us.” Caroline Springs also remains in the finals mix, sitting sixth, percentage ahead of Centrals. On Saturday, the Falcons beat Maribyrnong Park St Marys. Maribyrnong made 164 after being bowled out with an over remaining. The Falcons took their time, getting
career win as a trainer when Better Exclusive produced a long-odds victory in the Allied Express Pace Final (2240m, NR 56-66). Caruana was ill and unable to make the track on Friday night, but would have been smiling as the horse dug deep to hold off runner-up Dan Fernando by a head on the line. “Blake would have been jumping up and down in the bed, that’s for sure,” young driver Connor Ronan said. “It was a big step up in class tonight. Three starts ago he won the equivalent to a C1 and then to win a race like this, where there is some very nice horses in it, it’s a credit to the team and the horse.” Stewart took the night’s training honours with two winners after Berisari scored in the Garrards Pace (2240m, NR 80-105), while Alford was the top driver after landing a treble on the program. Tim O’Connor
the job down with eight balls remaining, making 4-165. Ben Cusick top scored with 52 not out. In division 3, second placed Sydenham-Hillside beat East Keilor. The Storm’s 151 was enough as they bowled East Keilor out for 130. In division 5, Melton South Royals slipped from top spot with a loss to Gellibrand. The Royals now sit fourth.
An undermanned Bacchus Marsh Lions sealed their finals berth in the Country Basketball League north-west competition. Missing a number of key players, including leaders Billy Feben and Jordan Kirk, the Lions left it to the last second to seal the win against the Mildura Heat, 58-57. Lions coach Jeff Feben said the win showed the depth within the squad. “We were short our core group of players, but the group really took to the task and worked hard defensively. “We were behind all game and the plan was to try and stick with them all game and give it a shot in the final quarter. “We were seven down at one point in the last quarter and we kept working. “We got a fast break late and Max [Beaumont] went up and finished it under pressure to win the game. “It was right on the buzzer, I wasn’t sure if it had counted. It was an excited group of players and coaches.” Feben said the most pleasing thing was seeing players step up and take the chances when they got them. Sam Byron and Jake Raynor played well as the Lions tested two bigs on the court at the same time for the first time this season. Tyler Collins, who scored a career high 11 points for the Lions, was another who stepped up. “Tyler came on and provided some valuable points,” Feben said. “He really gave us something and gave us pressure.” Byron top scored with 17 points, while Beaumont, who came up big in the last quarter, scored 14 points. Feben said the biggest improvement for the Lions in the back half of the season, had been the development of their list. He said they would have some headaches over who to give time on court for the rest of the season. The win is enough for the Lions to secure a finals spot, with one match remaining. Feben said they were aiming for a top two spot. He said it was a close competition and the title was anyone’s for the taking. Tara Murray

Max impact as Western United take care of Mariners
Western United star Alessandro Diamanti could face time on the sidelines after injuring his leg. (Luke Hemer) 200783_47
The week’s break did wonders for Western United. United had a collective pep in its step when it returned to the field for Sunday’s 3-0 win over Central Coast Mariners in the A-League at GMHBA Stadium. The spark that had been missing in recent games was recaptured as United banged in three goals in a 21-minute blitz to start the game to put the result beyond doubt. United coach Mark Rudan said the opportunity for his team to exhale, refresh, reflect and project over the bye round was invaluable. “It was good to reflect and speak about where we want to go in the second half of the season,” Rudan said. “The atmosphere and the culture around the place, the vibe around the place, the last week and a half, the last 10 days, has been absolutely superb. “The boys are coming in with a smile on their face. “They want to have a really big crack at this in the second half of the season.
A-League Western United 3 (Berisha 6, 21, Rowles 18 OG) d Central Coast Mariners 0 at GMHBA Stadium. Next: Western United v Adelaide United, VU Whitten Oval, Sunday, 6pm. “You can see that through their performance.” Western United produced one of its best halves of the season in the opening 45. United’s one-touch football, team build up and finishing was mouth watering. Alessandro Diamanti kick-started the first half blitz for United, producing a delightful cross to the head of striker Besart Berisha, who looped his header over Mariners goalkeeper Mark Birighitti and into the top corner for the go-ahead goal. United doubled its lead when Connor Pain made a strong run down the left and cut the ball
Eagles take control By Tara Murray A mid-innings batting masterclass secured Eynesbury Eagles’ victory against Aintree in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield on the weekend. For most of the game, the result looked like it would go down to the wire, before Justin Siedlecki and Scott Porter took the game away from Aintree. The Eagles then cruised to victory and cemented their spot in the top four. Eagles captain-coach Tristan Francis was thrilled with the victory that in the end they did with ease. Aintree made 211 batting first to set up a good run chase. “I thought 180 was about par,” he said. “The ground was slow, but Mount Carberry is a small ground and you can score runs quickly. “We knew we needed one of the top five to score a big score. Justin made 85 and Scott in his third game for the season is averaging nearly 200. He made 74. “They put on 103 off about 10 overs and broke Aintree’s back. After 20 overs we were looking at six runs an over. “The last six overs we only needed three runs an over and I don’t think we hit a boundary after that. We did it quite comfortably.” Francis said the performance of 15-year-old Josh Oldfield on Saturday was really pleasing. Coming back after playing in the twos, he contributed with both the ball and bat. “I thought he was the pick of the bowlers, with five overs one for 10 with a couple of maidens up front. “He did well with the ball and then he opened the batting. I threw him in the deep end and he made 24.” The win cements the Eagles’ spot in the top four, which is a long way from last season when they won just one game. Francis said making finals would be a good achievement. They have three rounds remaining after a bye this weekend. “St Anthony’s haven’t set the world on fire and Kyneton are below us and we haven’t played them yet,” Francis said. “Sunbury sits above us. “If we can get the next two games we can secure finals. We can’t relax or things could go pear shaped.” Aintree, in its first season, sits percentage outside the top four, with a battle for finals spots over the coming weeks. In the McIntyre Cup, Bacchus Marsh and Diggers Rest Bulla are both in great positions after day one of their matches. The Bulls have already secured first innings points against St Anthony’s.

The Saints were bowled out for 101 with skipper Cameron Clayton top scoring with 30. Ian Spiteri took 4-20 for the Bulls. The Bulls made a quick fire 1-123 to secure first innings points. Kasun Suriaratchie made 69 not out. The Saints will resume at 1-34 in

their second innings. Diggers Rest Bulla is closing in on first innings points against Woodend. The Burras bowled Woodend out for just 132, with Lindon Dowsett taking 4-12. The Burras will resume at 3-80 on day two.
back for Josh Risdon, who put his shot wide, only for it to cannon off Mariners defender Kye Rowles and in for an own goal. Berisha made it three unanswered for United, tapping in from point blank range after a superb build up from Max Burgess, who took his man on one-on-one, blew past him and found Berisha in the box. Western United was put under the pump by Central Coast in the second half, but United goalkeeper Filip Kurto was not put under too much stress. The undisputed player of the match was Western United attacking midfielder Max Burgess. Burgess did it all, taking players on in isolated situations, leading United’s counter-attacking play and delivering to the forwards with precision. Western United is up to fifth on the ladder after the win. United will play sixth-placed Adelaide United in what should be an Australia Day cracker at the VU Whitten Oval on Sunday at 6pm. Full steam ahead for Burras Diggers Rest women’s football coach Trent Hedges is excited by the prospect of the club fielding a women’s side for the first time. Having coached the Burras’ youth league girls side the last two years, Hedges will combine roles this season, coaching both the girl’s and women’s team. Hodges said he had always wanted to get involved when the senior club set up a women’s side, but didn’t expect it to happen so soon. “A few of the senior under 18s players were worried about what to do after juniors,” Hedges said. “[President] Ben Morse and I had a talk and I couldn’t say no to the role. I had a duty of care to help them out and go up with them. “It will help bridge the gap between the seniors and juniors, with a few of the junior girls likely to be training with us at the end of the year.” The Burras had their first training session last week with a come and try session. Hedges said they had about 13 or 14 people confirmed to play after the come and try session and more had been in touch since. He said now that they had the ball rolling and started training, that more people would look to get involved. Hedges is hoping to get together a squad of about 25 players and were encouraging anyone who wants to play to come down. The Burras have landed a major recruit in Simone Craige. Craige spent last season on Carlton’s VFLW list, having played with both the Sunbury Kangaroos and Sunbury Lions. Hedges said Craige was the first player he called when he got the job. “I grew up with her brother, so I’ve known her since I was eight,” he said. “She played juniors at Diggers Rest. I’m rapt to have her on board.” The side will play in the Essendon District Football League women’s competition. Hedges said they were unsure what division they will play in. The Burras are training on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6pm. Anyone interested in playing can contact Trent on 0421166686 or trenthedges101@yahoo.com.au. Tara Murray
