Musician’s top honour By Ewen McRae A lifetime in music and performing has seen Hillside’s John Lo Piccolo awarded a medal of the Order of Australia as part of the Australia Day honours. Lo Piccolo – who has performed as John St Peeters since 1969 – was awarded the OAM for services to the performing arts, and said the announcement floored him. “When I got the news it was a shock to me,” he said. “I’ve been doing this since I was a kid, and the most important thing to me from the very first time I stepped on stage was to have people smiling and hopefully enjoying what I was doing. “I’m blown away, because I didn’t expect this. Australia is the best country in the world, and I’ve had opportunities to pursue my career overseas, but Australia has always been in my heart.”

- John Lo Piccolo Lo Piccolo first came to prominence as a child, when his early performances with his piano accordion on talent show ‘New Faces’ and Graham Kennedy’s ‘In Melbourne Tonight’ saw him become known as The Squeeze Box Kid. “In many ways I didn’t have a normal childhood,” he said. “I had a kidney condition which meant I couldn’t do the outdoor games that other kids were doing, and my dad was a musician so I started learning from him and that’s how it all started.” But it was watching a show by Elvis Presley in Hawaii in the early 70s that inspired him to write his own pop and rock songs, a switch that saw him with multiple top 40 hits, as well as regular appearances on Countdown with his good friend Molly Meldrum. “I’ve had the best mentors anybody could ever have,” Lo Piccolo said. “Graham (Kennedy) just told me to ‘do what you do’, and gave me my first break, and Bert (Newton) was lovely to me in those early days, and these people became my show biz family. “And I owe so much to Molly for helping me transition to a singer-songwriter. I became a regular on Countdown, and hearing Molly announcing my songs on the chart-busters segment was mind blowing to me. “I’m a very, very lucky human being.” Lo Piccolo still writes and performs, while

also moving into the creative direction field in recent years. Two other locals were also awarded an OAM as part of Australia Day celebrations, including Melton South’s Daryl Akers. Mr Akers has been a diligent worker for local

conservation and the environment, including 20 years with the Melton Environment Group, an active member of the Western Melbourne Catchments Network, 15 years with the Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden, and a long time Grant Officer and Member of the Friends of

Toolern Creek. Eynesbury’s Evelyn Missen was also awarded an OAM for her work with youth and the community, including roles with Arthritis Victoria Foundation, Mercy Health palliative care services, and volunteer roles with Freemasons Victoria.

Flu cases hit record numbers By Ewen McRae Melton and Moorabool experienced a record breaking flu season in 2019, according to new figures from the Department of Health. The department’s infectious diseases report states there were 2170 instances of flu within the Melton municipality, a sharp increase from the 310 cases in 2018, and more than twice the previous record year in 2017 (860 cases). Moorabool also experienced a record year, with 324 cases of flu for the year, up from 74 in 2018 and 237 in 2017.

‘‘

Flu is just as common in summer so it’s not too late to - Belinda Scott get your shot

’’

Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott said while flu seasons were getting longer each year, it was pleasing to see the numbers of residents taking up vaccines also increasing each year. “We saw some high numbers of flu, but we also had our highest numbers of immunisation

to stay up-to-date with your vaccines.” Despite the high flu numbers in 2019, Ms Scott said the health services were coping well, and had up-skilled more nurses to meet the demand for vaccines. “We’re always making sure we have enough to keep up with demand,” she said. “It’s about awareness with the flu. People need to not be complacent, because the flu is not a cold … there are deaths in young people from the flu, and in the elderly, so what we need to do is make sure that people understand that and are proactively getting vaccinated.”

as well,” Ms Scott said. “Flu is easy to forget in the months that aren’t the winter months, but flu is just as common in summer so it is not too late to get your shot. “Flu is seasonal, and we had a pretty bad year in 2017 as well, and so each year it is about what is around and combating that. Flu is spread by contact so it is important to practice good hygiene to help the community avoid spreading it. “Each year the vaccine is made specifically for what they believe are the strains of flu that are going to be around that year, so it’s important

Big boost for local racing Melton’s Tabcorp Park is benefiting from a funding boost from the state government, with prominent summer events becoming even bigger. Melton MP Steve McGhie recently announced that the government would inject $30,000 from its Victorian Racing Industry Fund to ramp up the family fun and entertainment at the Summer of Glory events that run until February 1. The February event will feature one of the world’s richest handicap standing start events, the $500,000 Del-Re National A.G. Hunter Cup, headlining a top line-up of races set to bring together the best pacers and trotters in the land. Mr McGhie said he was proud to support such a prominent event in the local area. “We’re proud to support Melton in its efforts to deliver a great program of summer fun and entertainment for the whole community to enjoy,” he said. “The Summer of Glory racing series is a real feature of the harness racing calendar which supports local jobs and the local economy and we’re proud to play our part in backing it.” Tabcorp Park is contributing more than $72,000 to stage the events with Harness Racing Victoria kicking in more than $30,000. Tabcorp Park general manager Gayle Harvey said the funding boost would allow them to expand their entertainment options for families and other patrons. “We thank the Victorian Government for its support of the Summer of Glory racing series, which has allowed us to put on fantastic line-up of entertainment for all the family to enjoy,” Ms Harvey said.

Bacchus Marsh revs up for health Car enthusiasts and rev heads are set to take over Maddingley Park this weekend, with the David Calleja Memorial Car Show on again. The main annual fundraiser for Djerriwarrh Health Services, the car show will see families and car clubs from across Victoria descend on Bacchus Marsh to enjoy the sights and sounds of cars, trucks and bikes from across the years. Djerriwarrh Health chief executive Belinda Scott said it was an important event for the community and also the local health services. “It’s the 15th year of the car show, and David Calleja was a long time supporter of the hospital

here in Bacchus Marsh,” Ms Scott said. “He passed away in 2004, and his family wanted to continue to support the hospital, so that’s how the show started. This year we’re expecting over 600 cars, trucks and bikes, so it’s set to be another big event. “We’ve had great support from all over the community, and we’ve got vehicles from all eras for people to enjoy so it will be a great day.” Djerriwarrh hopes to raise $100,000 from the event, with over $45,000 already raised. Funds will go towards new equipment and resources for the hospital. “The event gives

us the money to spend on equipment that we otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford,” Ms Scott said. “We’re looking at some new wheelchairs, an ECG machine, some new patient trolleys, some portable observation machines, and some other things to cover our urgent care, medical unit, our aged care and our ambulance centres, so it’s across our whole business that will benefit from this fundraising.” The car show will run from 7am to 4.30pm on February 2, with food trucks, market stalls, and kids entertainment on site as well. After recognising a need in the community for more recreation activities for locals living with a disability, Specialist Hoops is back for another big year. What started as a one-day event in 2017 is now run every Friday at the Melton Recreation Centre, and organiser Emily Attard said the popularity of the program was inspiring. “We’re an all-abilities basketball program for kids all the way through to adults who have disabilities,” Ms Attard said. “We saw the need for people with disabilities to be involved with sport, because there is often a lack of opportunities in that area. “It’s quickly become a great way for people with disabilities to engage from a social aspect, but also to be able to stay physically fit and

improve mental health as well.” While the program initially had just five participants, it now has roughly 40 attending the sessions, with three courts in action each week. Ms Attard said it would be great to see more volunteers involved in Specialist Hoops as it continues to grow. “More volunteers who want to get involved in the sport and helping to work with people with disabilities would be great. “All we ask is that they’re enthusiastic and wanting to learn. It’s a great community we have down there, and we’re here to help which is great to be a part of.” The program will kick off the year on February 7, from 4.30pm. Ewen McRae

On the morning of January 21, Caroline Springs police were patrolling in the Burnside area when they observed a vehicle parked in a suspicious manner at about 6:15am. They approached the vehicle where it was discovered that the vehicle was a stolen and all five female occupants were arrested. The 14-year-old driver and the 14, 15 and 17 year-old passengers were charged with theft of a motor vehicle and driving related offences from earlier that night. All the females were bailed to appear at the Children’s Court at a later date.

Rockbank shelter wait continues By Ewen McRae Bus commuters in Rockbank will have to wait longer for new shelters, with other areas deemed a higher priority. A number of new bus services have been added to the Rockbank region in the past 12 months, keeping up with high growth in the area, but some residents say more shelters are needed to protect commuters on days of high heat or rain. One resident, who did not wish to be named, said he had put garden chairs at stops on

Wescott Parade for elderly passengers to use, but was dismayed to see them removed soon after. “I’ve been doing it for a few months, but each time I put one out it’s gone within days,” he said. “It makes no sense to put more effort into removing chairs than putting shelters and seats in. The last couple of times I’ve chained them to the stop post, and they’ve still been removed.” A department of transport spokesperson said while they were not aware who had removed the chairs, they instructed all contractors

to remove any items which are not fixed, structurally checked and regularly maintained from bus stops and shelters as they may pose a potential safety risk to passengers and the public. “We work closely with councils who provide us with recommendations on proposed new bus shelter locations in their municipalities each year,” the spokesperson said. “Requests for new bus shelters are considered according to a number of factors, including passenger numbers, and our records show there are very low numbers of passengers

touching on from Westcott Parade.” The department said there were 50 bus stops across Melton with higher passenger ‘touch on’ numbers than bus stops on Westcott Parade. Melton Council’s acting manager of engineering services, David Voltaire, said they were hopeful more shelters would be installed in Rockbank soon. “We have received three official requests for bus shelters on Westcott Parade in Rockbank, however we have had a significant number of bus stops with higher usage which had been prioritised for shelters,” he said.

Gold Cup returns After a year off, the Melton Gold Cup is set to once again light up the Melton Reservoir this weekend. Bringing together some of the best speed and power boat drivers in the world, the event will run from January 31 to February 2 and showcase the breakneck speed and skill that the sport is famous for. The event did not run in 2019, and Melbourne Runabout and Speedboat Club member Jo Paynter said it was exciting to see the event return. “It’s our major meeting each year, but last year we had an Australia vs USA challenge instead, so it’s been greatly missed I think,” Ms Paynter said. “We’ve got some of the best displacement boats in the country coming, including Australasia’s unlimited displacement champion, and the winner of last year’s challenge event coming along, so it will be the

best of the best going around very quickly.” With crowds of up to 5000 expected to descend on the reservoir, the boats will thrill the crowds at speeds of more than 240km/h. Entry is by a gold coin donation, with funds raised going to Beyond Blue. The day will feature competitors from juniors through to the professionals, and the event will also have food trucks on the lawns and a band to perform on the night following the racing. “This would be one of the biggest events that Victoria has on offer for the sport,” Ms Paynter said. “The club is very proud to support Beyond Blue through this event, and to promote the sport that we’re passionate about is fantastic. “To give our own club members the chance to race at their own waterway in a big event is great, and it’s a spectacular event to witness.” Ewen McRae

New road direct to Eynesbury By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has received 20 objections to a planning permit seeking permission for the staged construction of a road, removal of native vegetation and alteration to the access of Ballan Road. The $4.65 million plan aims to construct a road – named Mount Mary Road – from Ballan Road, near Ripley Road, to St Arnaud Road

in Eynesbury. The existing Mount Mary Road is an “unmade road” which is accessible via gates at both ends, and is used by the adjoining landowners and the CFA. Documents submitted with the planning permit said that Wyndham council required stage one of Mount Mary Road to be operational no later than the 1800th residential lot is built in Eynesbury. So far, more than 940 lots have been approved

in Eynesbury, with 856 occupied dwellings. Under the road project’s first stage, the existing intersection of Ballan Road and Mount Mary Road would be modified to include line marking and signage. A “rural road” would also be constructed from Ballan Road to St Arnaud Road. The second stage of the project includes plans to widen the intersection and introduce dedicated left and right turn lanes, with the

speed limit reduced to 80 kilometres per hour. Also during the second stage, the connection between Mount Mary Road and St Arnaud Road would be removed, to be replaced with an “urban road” that would extend further west and connect with Logan Street, or possibly another street. The planning permit has been lodged with both Wyndham and Melton councils, as Eynesbury falls between the two municipalities.

Upgrade for pavilion deserve.” The pavilion is home to the Caroline Springs football, netball and cricket clubs, and the upgrade follows the opening of new female friendly changerooms in late 2019. Melton mayor Lara Carli said the refurbished pavilion would help meet the demand of sporting clubs in the region. “Upgrading and extending this space will make a big difference to our rapidly growing community,” she said. “It will ensure this popular precinct continues to be a key recreational hub for local residents and supports their active lifestyles. “I look forward to seeing local residents and visitors alike make full use of the precinct once works are complete.” The pavilion is expected to be finished in late-2020. The growth of sporting clubs in Caroline Springs has seen more investment in facilities, with works beginning on an extended pavilion last week. The pavilion at Caroline Springs Town Centre Sports Precinct will be upgraded across the next 12 months, with funds from the state government and council going towards the $2.12 million project. Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek was on hand last week to turn the first sod on the project, with money from the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund contributing to the upgrade. “This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when state and local government work hand-in-hand in partnership to deliver for the community,” he said. “I’m sure the facility will become a great resource for the community once it is completed, and with more people choosing to call Caroline Springs home, it is more important now than ever to provide these growing communities with the facilities they

Not so super for workers By Ewen McRae Workers in the state electorates of Melton, Kororoit and Sydenham are owed millions in unpaid super, according to a new report. An analysis of Australian Tax Office data from 2016/17 by Industry Super Australia (ISA) revealed more than 800,000 Victorians have not received their legal super entitlement – almost one in three workers. On average the state’s workers are ripped off

about $1,750 each a year in super, roughly $1.4 billion overall in 12 months. Workers in the Sydenham electorate were revealed to be short changed by $16.72 million, while Kororoit ($16.12 million) and Melton ($15.46 million) were also heavily affected. The law currently says employers should pay super quarterly, with the ISA saying the federal government needed to update the law to have it paid on pay day instead. Industry Super Australia deputy chief executive Matt Linden

‘‘

Unpaid super blasts a hole in workers’ savings

’’

- Matt Linden called on the state government to do more to ensure workers were receiving their full super entitlements. “The only way to put this $1.4 billion super rip off to an end is for the Federal Government to make super payable on payday,“

Mr Linden said. “The Victorian Government can add its voice to fi x this problem once and for all. “Across the state almost a third of Victorian workers are having their super stolen, no area is immune. Unpaid super blasts a hole in workers’ savings. “With such little enforcement action taken against those responsible for the unpaid super scandal it is time for Victoria’s federal and state politicians to act.”

Music to young ears A music program for young children is coming to the region, giving families the chance to explore their creative sides. The Mini Maestros program will kick off this week, offering a fun, active and educational music class that enhances children’s development through beats and rhythms. The program, which has classes for kids aged 0-2 and 3-5, is free for all participants. Melton council community planning manager Matthew Wilson said the program was a great opportunity to introduce kids to music in a fun way. “Mini Maestros is a fun and educational music program where children play percussion instruments, sing, dance and play games,” Mr Wilson said. “Learning music at a young age can have many developmental benefits including building communication skills, memory, self-expression and confidence. “Weekly classes also run during school terms across the City of Melton for a fee.”

Delivered by an experienced facilitator, Mini Maestros offers an opportunity for children to explore and improve fine and gross motor skills, coordination, balance, social concepts like turn taking and cooperation, grasp of musical concepts like high and low, loud and quiet, and more. The sessions will run at Eynesbury Discovery Centre on January 31 and February 6, with more free classes on at Caroline Springs Library (February 1), Springside Community Centre (February 4). Classes will be split on all days, with 0 – 2 years from 10am – 10.45am, and 3-5 years from 11am – 11.45am. To book visit: meltonlearning.com.au Ewen McRae

8 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 28 January, 2020

Dance, music&drama

A STAR WEEKLY FEATURE

How dance can enhance your life skills Dance can be challenging, but there are many rewards. For all the sore muscles and hours of practice and focus, there’s the conditioning it returns, not to mention the surge of endorphins that also helps students think and feel better. However, from ballet to Zumba, dance can also impart tools that have the potential to serve a student for life.

Time management From dealing with homework and exams to meeting deadlines, how to manage time is something that every person has to navigate at some point or another. Developing an awareness of what that means – including learning how to prioritise certain activities over others, and balance wants and needs – is something that dance styles like ballet and jazz in particular can help refine. Ballet, for instance, is all about organisation, co-ordination and discipline. Lessons are highly structured and schedules are strict, so a sense of managing time can start from the moment students begin and then aim to prepare, say, for their first end of year concert.

Social skills The ability to co-operate with others is, arguably, an important strength, and a 2017 Greek study has found that recreational dancers tend to outshine both athletes and non-athletes in that respect. This could be because dancers have to interact with others, especially in group or partner situations, regularly, which goes a long way towards promoting respect and encouraging co-operation skills. Another perspective about how dance enhances social adaptability, is that participating in dance genres that are closely linked to other cultures, including Bollywood dancing and African styles, give students valuable exposure to other traditions and expressions and may thus encourage strong bonds and deepen understanding.

Creativity Dance is communication in movement. While dancers bring their own flair to particular movements, some genres actively encourage individual expression. In hip hop dance for example, many practitioners come up with their own blend of freestyle twists and turns. Of course, this requires strong problemsolving and imaginative approaches to initiating change. As a Swedish hip hop community outreach programme found recently, such creative activity can equip individuals with the fortitude to make positive changes to their own lives as well as the world. Lions’ batting falls short

Kouta to lead BFL team

By Tara Murray

Carlton great Anthony Koutoufides has been named the Ballarat Football League’s new interleague coach. Koutoufides steps into the role left vacant by former Redan player and Richmond premiership player Shaun Grigg, who had to pull out after signing as an assistant coach with Geelong. While the AFL Victoria Community Championships competition no longer exists, the BFL has managed to secure a match against arch rival the Bendigo Football League. The two leagues will face each other on May 2 in Ballarat in both football and netball. The two league’s last played each other in 2017 with the Ballarat League getting the win in the football that day. League chairman Adrian Bettios was thrilled to get Koutoufides on board. Koutoufides, who played 278 AFL games, brings plenty of experience, including being part of the 1995 AFL premiership. “To have a champion of the game in Anthony Koutoufides willing to commit to leading the BFNL in this campaign speaks highly of the calibre of our competition and we are thrilled to have Anthony on board for this year,” Bettios said. Koutoufides and the league will commence work ahead of the BFL season to put together a squad that will represent the league. Further announcements in regards to assistant coaches will be made at a later date. Tara Murray

Melton’s finals hopes suffered a setback with a disappointing loss to Bayswater in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west competition. The Lions were in control after day one of the match, but another batting failure would come back to haunt them. The Lions resumed at 0-10 in reply to 116, after a top bowling display on day one. Having stepped up their batting in recent weeks, the Lions were confident they could get the runs on day two. On Saturday, the Lions openers continued on where they left off and were cruising at 0-54 with victory well in their sight. That’s when disaster set in and it all unravelled for the Lions. The Lions quickly lost 5-12 to be in trouble at 5-66. There was no middle order come back, with the wickets continuing to fall. In the end, they would lose 10-36 to go from 0-54 to all out for 90 in just 60 overs. Openers Ben MacRae (37) and David Dickinson (19) were the only Lions players to reach double figures. The loss could prove a costly one for the Lions in the race for finals. Had they won the game they would be sitting in the top six with three rounds remaining. Instead they sit ninth, six points outside a finals spot. The Lions have a must win match away this week against bottom side Croydon. They then face sixth placed Noble Park and second placed Yarraville in the final two rounds. The Lions’ second XI had a win to move into sixth. Ben MacRae top scored for Melton on Saturday. SPORT Riddell football and netball join forces for fundraiser Bragging rights will be on the line when the Riddell District Football Netball League’s best players come together to raise money for those affected by the bushfires. A football and netball match pinning players from the west clubs against players from the east clubs will be played on February 16 at Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve. Riddell, Romsey, Woodend-Hesket, Lancefield and Wallan make up the east team, with Diggers, Rupertswood, Macedon, Melton Centrals and Rockbank making up the west team. Most clubs have provided five players from their senior football team. In netball, clubs are providing one player from each of the four divisions, from A-grade through to under-19s. Riddell president and RDFNL board member

Andrew Power has taken the leading hand in organising the event. The matches will be played as part of a larger BlazeAid fundraiser being organised by Riddells Creek resident Scott Trezise. “Brenton Knott [RDFNL president] ran it past me and it went from there,” Power said. “We knew that Scott [Trezise] was doing the BlazeAid day event and we thought it could maybe run after that. “We took the concept to him and he was on board.” Money raised by the football and netball matches will be donated to BlazeAid and the CFA. Power said players from all clubs were wanting to be involved. He said he was excited by the names that had put their hands up for the football match and

that it would be a cracker of a football match. “The names have been put in so far has been pretty good,” he said. “I’ve been more than impressed with the names. “It’s been driven by the players and the players are hearing about it and are wanting to be involved.” Anthony Power will coach the east football side, while Damian Houlihan will coach the west side. Riddell’s Ben Sonogan is the east captain. Dylan Tarczon, Matt Bowden, Jack O’Sullivan and Michael Mannix are among the stars in that team. Diggers Rest premiership captain Tom Gleeson will captain the west team. Brent Swallow, Jason Williams, Seb Miletic and Dylan Weir are among others in the team. In the netball, Diggers Rest coach Pam

Strong will coach the west team and the East team will be led by Wallan coach Chris Cameron. Clubs have to until February 6 to nominate players. Among those already committed are A-grade players Shelby Strong, Janelle Birch, Gemma Grimmond and Gen Zoch. Umpires from both sports have also committed to the day. Power said they were hoping that people would attend both the sporting event and the BlazeAid activities held prior to the matches. Knott said the league wanted to do what they could to support those going through the hard times. “It’s a great opportunity to get our community together to help another community.” For a full list of players involved, head to www.starweekly.com.au/sports

Sports shorts VTCA Sydenham-Hillside is in good position after day one of its match against Williamstown Imperials in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Roy Picone Shield. The Storm bowled the Imperials out for 147 with Ben Gren taking 5-37. The Storm were 0-7 stumps. Caroline Springs is on the back foot in division 4 against Wyndhamvale.

GDCA Bacchus Marsh just missed out on claiming outright points against St Anthony’s in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Having claimed first innings points on day one, the Bulls sent the Saints back in on day two with a lead off 22 runs. They bowled the Saints out for 162, before finishing 6-134 to finish 10 runs short of claiming full points. Diggers Rest had a big win against Woodend. Chasing 132, Woodend made 222. Woodend was 1-34 in its second innings.

Line Up dashes to the line. (Stuart McCormick)

Butt reins supreme By Tim O’Connor An extraordinary night for reinsman Anthony Butt, who claimed both the three-year-old Group 1 features, and a ground-breaking performance by Lochinvar Art, highlighted a stunning Night 2 of the TAB Summer of Glory. Butt doubled-down on a sublime Saturday evening at Tabcorp Park Melton when he added the Downbytheseaside Victoria Derby to an earlier Pryde’s EasiFeed Victoria Oaks triumph, with Line Up carrying his favouritism status with aplomb in the $200,000 feature. Butt, a former Melton resident who’s recently moved to Sydney, led from the outset with Line Up, spacing the chasing bunch with a 26.8-second third quarter before closing with a 27.8-second final 400 metres, which was enough to win by 1.6 metres from Grant Dixon’s Governor Jujon. “He’s a lovely horse, very relaxed,” Butt said. “He just went to sleep in front, that’s what he likes. When I pulled the plugs around the bend he really zipped away. It was a big effort.” It capped a big night for Butt, who earlier

won the $150,000 Victoria Oaks with Dr Susan for New Zealand co-trainers Nathan Purdon and Cran Dalgety. Dr Susan actually broke her gait in a false start, but second time around would break the hearts of her rivals with a 26.3-second third quarter to set up victory in the Group 1. The all-the-way win was scored by 4.4 metres from favourite Stylish Memphis, a satisfying win for co-trainer Dalgety that he dedicated to Bacchus Marsh reinsman Gavin Lang, who is battling ill-health. “I just saw my good friend Gavin Lang today,” Dalgety said post-race. “Gavin’s having a wee bit of an off time, if I can dedicate a race I’m going to dedicate it to that good man Gavin Lang. It seems a bit hollow tonight not having him win one of these big races.” The three-year-old classics were almost overshadowed by Lochinvar Art’s extraordinary performance in the Group 1 Alabar 4YO Bonanza, where he not only beat highly touted Self Assured but won in a 1:48.6 mile rate, the first time a horse has broken the magical 1:50 barrier in Victoria.

“He’s just a legend really,” Lochinvar Art’s trainer-driver David Moran said. “I’m chuffed and lost for words. He’s just a champion.” There was also plenty of fun on track when Always Fast won the Mercury80 for Kima Frenning and Emma Stewart, capping the terrific 1200-metre series that began in front of thousands at Melton on New Year’s Eve. But it’s perhaps the Allied Express Casey Classic and DNR Logistics V L Dullard Trotters Cup that will create most conversation this week. Those two features are likely to be key lead-ins to this Saturday’s headliners on Night 3 of the TAB Summer of Glory back at Tabcorp Park Melton – the $500,000 Del-Re National A. G. Hunter Cup and the $250,000 What The Hill Great Southern Star. Those two crowns form Victoria’s richest pacing race and Australia’s richest trotting race respectively and will draw Australasia’s most talented harness racing combatants to battle for a place in equine immortality. Kiwi Mach Shard reaffirmed he’ll be a contender in the Hunter Cup with Saturday night’s bold win in the Casey Classic.

Bacchus Marsh Lions finished the regular season with a loss to the Castlemaine Cannons in the Country Basketball League men’s north west on Saturday night. While the Lions already had a finals berth secured, the Cannons needed a win to finish in the top four. With that focus, the Cannons came away with an 83-65 win. Max Beaumont top scored with 23 points. The Lions face the Bendigo Braves in a knock out semi final on Saturday night.

Basketball A pair of Melton boys will represent Vic Country at the under-18 National Basketball Championships in April. Tonga Matapule Otutaha has been named in the under-18 team for a second straight year, and third straight year representing Victoria. Centre of Excellence scholarship holder Bol Dengdit has been named in a Victorian team for the first time. The championships will be held in Ballarat over the school holidays.

MacPherson Park gets ready to host VFL clash Melton will host a Victorian Football League match for premiership points for the first time later this year. Coburg will call MacPherson Park home for its round 13 clash against Williamstown on June 27 with the Lions normal home ground of Piranha Park unavailable this year due to renovations. Lions general manager Sebastian Spagnuolo said they were excited to take VFL to the Melton. “Originally we set out to take as many games as possible to Preston, to be as close as possible to home,” he said. “We spoke to the VFL and councils and there was an appetite to spread the game. “We targeted a few locations and Melton was one of them, and the [Melton] council is pleased to take the game to Melton. “We’re proud to make these agreements with the local councils and take the game to places like Melton and have VFL return to Ballarat.” Spagnuolo said they were hoping to attract a

big crowd out to Macpherson Park for the day and get people from Melton and the western suburbs to see history made. He said MacPherson Park was the ideal location. The new rooms and facilities are currently being built at the ground.

Spagnuolo said it made sense for the club to host Williamstown in the match. Melton is part of the Western Jets area, with the Jets aligned with Williamstown. Both Coburg and even more so Williamstown, have had Melton-based players on their lists in recent years. Williamstown’s general manager of football, Stephen Soulsby said they were excited to head out to Melton. “Unfortunately for Coburg with their ground being unavailable this year, they have to take games out into regions and we’re fortunate enough it’s close to us,” he said. “We have our alignment with the Western Jets and it’s a Western Jets region as well. It works out well.” Soulsby said they had built a good relationship with the home club Melton Football Netball Club, with players like Bloods players Jake Greiser and Liam Carter either currently or in the past been on Wiliamstown’s list.

“To come out here for the first time, the ground is looking in good shape and we’re looking forward to it and getting out here in round 13. “We’ve always had strong support in the west from us and it has been expanded now with players playing local footy and not playing in the reserves competition.” Melton has a bye that weekend, allowing the players and members to attend the VFL match. Bloods president Greg Davis said it was quite exciting for the club to have a VFL match held at their home ground. “It gives us the opportunity to show off the club, the new club rooms, Macpherson Park and Melton,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of players at Willy and Coburg. “We’ll try and get as many people there as possible and hopefully provide some good hospitality for both Coburg and Williamstown.” Tara Murray

Lions made to work hard By Tara Murray Darley didn’t have it all its own way, but still came away with the points in the Ballarat Cricket Association against Naps-Sebas on Saturday. Sitting undefeated, the Lions were made to work hard for runs before their bowling attack stood up strong to seal the win. Lions coach Brian Wheelahan, who wasn’t at the game, said by all reports it was a tough match. The Lions batted first and made 8-153 from their 50 overs. “It wasn’t an easy game,” he said. “It was a really tough deck to bat on and we were under at 2-5. Jake Wilkie, who we just brought in, batted really well when we needed someone to “He stuck around and we’re rapt for him.” Wilkie finished with 42, while Hasitha Wickramasinghe contributed a handy 35 not out coming in at number nine.

Wheelahan said they thought they were about 20 runs short of having a competitive total. The Lions bowlers, though, would get the job done, restricting Naps-Sebas to 8-134. The bowlers shared the wickets around with five of the seven bowlers taking wickets, with no one taking more than two. Wheelahan said the bowling unit continues to keep finding a way to get the job done. “It’s a struggle to single one of them out,” he said. “They all bowled well and they bowled well in partnerships and we were able to manufacture the win.” The win means the Lions have all but sealed their finals spot with three rounds remaining. Wheelahan said there was still plenty of work to do, as they return to red ball cricket for the final three rounds. “It’s been a long time and it’s good to get back to the two-dayers,” he said. “We want to continue to play our cricket

14 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 28 January, 2020

and build up. We’ve had some really good performances with the bat from Harry Killoran and Danza Hyatt but we can’t be relying on them and we have spoken about it. “We bat deep and bowl really well with seven or eight blokes we can throw the ball to. “The morale is great and we’re looking forward to the next six weeks.” Wheelahan said there would be plenty of pressure on the top side, with five or six players in the second XI pushing for spots. Joel Cadman and Lachlan Herring are among those who played in the second XI on the weekend. “It’s the worst part of my job, we can only select 11 players,” he said. “Jamo [Hayden Jamieson] came up before Christmas and made a 70 and we brought in Wilkie and had got a tough 40 when we needed it. “The whole playing group is on notice and that they have to contribute. It’s definitely a positive.”

Melton is going along happily and quietly in Bowls Victoria pennant division 2. After setting high expectations last season and not reaching them and going down a division, Melton has been focused on just getting the job done this season. And it is working, with their two division two sides, one in section 1 and one in section 2, exactly where they want them. Melton’s Conrad Dawson said they were quite happy with how things were travelling. “Obviously we have one side in the same section as Bacchus Marsh which is doing well,” he said. “We’re in the middle of the table in that section. The aim was to keep that side around mid-table and survive as it’s a tough section. “The section two team is sitting second and pushing to get a side back into division 1. “They look they will play finals with a good lead over the other sides. “We’re quietly achieving.” Dawson, who is playing in the section two side, said both teams have had their ups and downs, but overall things were going well. Their division 3 side is sitting just outside the top four. “Last year we had a lot of expectations and we didn’t achieve them,” he said. “This year we’ve just set some key targets and we’re on track to achieve them.” The division 2, section 1 side dropped their bundle on Saturday against Werribee in the first game back after Christmas. Melton lost 85 (16)-71 (2). In division 2, section 2, Melton beat Keilor 83 (14)-71 (4). Colin Norris and Ray Gnjidic were the winning skips for Melton. They sit in clear second, with top side Craigieburn a runaway leader, 37 shots clear. Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh had a winning return beating Strathmore 97 (18)-55 (0) in section 1. Troy Williams, Phil Minniti, Daniel Willis and Ethan Higgns were the winning skips for Bacchus Marsh. Bacchus Marsh sits second, just one point behind Port Melbourne. Tara Murray

MOTOR

Compact SUV has big impact By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring

AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE

Released here in July 2019, Hyundai Venue is the newest, and smallest, member of the Korean carmaker’s growing SUV range. At a smidgeon over four metres in length it’s one of the shortest of all models in the compact SUV market. Three variants are offered: Go, Active and Elite at prices ranging from $19,990 to $25,990 plus on-roads. With the Accent hatchback now dropped Venue becomes the entry-level model in the Hyundai range.

Venue Go: $19,990 (manual), $21,990 (automatic) Venue Active: $21,490 (manual), $23,490 (automatic) Venue Elite: $25,490 (automatic)

Note: These prices do not include dealer or government charges. Contact your local Hyundai dealer for drive-away prices.

Driving Styling Venue’s chunky body is neat and functional without the fussiness of many of its competitors. The front is dominated by a large vertical grille flanked by small stacked headlights, with the profile featuring wide wheel arches, character lines and side cladding which give it a semi-rugged look, as do standard roof rails. Venue Elite adds further character with two-tone roof and matching mirrors caps.

Engine/transmissions All Venue models are powered by the same 1.6-litre petrol engine with maximum outputs of 90 kW and 151 Nm. The two lower-specced models have the option of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the Elite is auto-only.

Interior The interior has clean lines, well-positioned buttons and controls and a centrally-mounted touchscreen that melds neatly into the dashboard. A flat roofline provides enough space for all but very tall occupants Seats are wide and comfortable and even with the rear seats in use there’s 355 litres of cargo space

New Hyundai Venue offers outstanding safety at an affordable price. (Supplied)

Safety

Infotainment

Standard across the Venue range are front, side, thorax and curtain airbags; enhanced ABS brakes; electronic stability program; hill-start assist; IsoFix child seat restraint anchors as well as Hyundai’s SmartSense suite that includes driver attention warning; autonomous emergency braking; lane keeping assist; high beam assist and tyre pressure monitoring The mid-spec Active adds LED daytime running lights and rear parking sensors while the Elite also gets blind spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning.

The infotainment system is based around an 8-inch tablet style touchscreen. Standard in all models are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity. Venue comes standard with the Hyundai Auto Link system which pairs with a smartphone app to allow remote access to variety of features. These include monitoring the driving habits of different drivers; acceleration / braking tendencies; vehicle health check; emergency assist and service alerts.

Despite its compact dimensions Venue feels like a larger vehicle. Entry is relatively easy and seats are comfortable and supportive. The top outputs of 90kW and 151Nm come in at high rpm levels of 6300 and 4850 respectively so Venue seemed aimed at pleasing keen drivers. Automatic versions have a Sport mode in addition to Eco and Normal settings. Hyundai Venue only weighs between 1140kg and 1225kg depending on the variant so it’s still quite agile around town and cruises comfortably in motorway conditions. Fuel consumption is listed at 7.0 litres per 100 km with the manual gearbox and 7.2 L/100 km from the auto. During our test in the Active auto we averaged 8.1 overall.

Summing up We should point out here that we have been testing Venue for a couple of months, and probably will be for the next six years or so – because my wife was so impressed during our initial week-long test that it has now replaced the previous very capable, Suzuki Swift. Venue comes with a five year, unlimited distance warranty. It has fixed price service every 15,000km.
