In March 2011, a Senate inquiry into the social and economic effects of rural wind farms recommended further research and a cautionary approach, due to the possible health effects if turbines were built too close to houses. The dismissive attitude of Moorabool Environment Group president Rose de la Cruz, who discounted any evidence that wind farms caused medical problems, indicates she has not taken heed of any worldwide research being undertaken which points to evidence to the contrary. She obviously hasn’t met with anyone in Victoria who has been adversely affected, some to the extent that they can no longer live in their homes. If wind farms are to become part of our mix of renewable energy solutions, is it not a good idea to make sure that the production of clean, green power is done in such a way that there is an acceptable compromise between the proponents of the facility, landholders and neighbours? Parking problems

Melton council’s bylaws officers could have a field day in front of the WestWaters Hotel in Caroline Springs. Lazy people continue to park in a no-standing area, making it dangerous for drivers and pedestrians coming from the car park at nearby Caroline Springs Square. A disturbing glimpse into the private rental market reveals young people relying on income support cannot afford to rent in the north-west. The release of rental affordability statistics comes as the number of people on the public housing waiting list in Melton and Brimbank tops 3500. Affordability data released by Anglicare Victoria looked at 424 Melton properties advertised for rent on April 5. Of these properties, 53 per cent (225) were deemed affordable for a couple on the minimum wage with two children. This dropped to 14 per cent (58) for a single person on the minimum wage with two children. Just 10 properties (2 per cent) were affordable for a couple on income support with two children. For individuals on income allowance, no properties were suitable. Principal researcher Tatiana Corrales said the figures highlighted young people’s exclusion from the private rental market. “There’s a lot [of housing] appropriate for their situation, but none affordable,” Dr Corrales said. The data showed Melton was one of the few outer-suburban regions with affordable housing for low-income couples with children. Dr Corrales urged the state government to focus on improving infrastructure in urban-fringe areas. “People are migrating out, and the lack of infrastructure makes employment and

education opportunities a little harder,” she said. “Although people may be able to find affordable property, their ability to gain employment or education may easily be impacted.” People in need of social housing are also suffering. A total of 3613 people in Brimbank and Melton were on the public housing waiting list in March this year, up 4.5 per cent from December last year. In the Central Highlands region, including Moorabool, 860 people were on the list, an increase of 9.5 per cent.

Melton Labor MP Don Nardella said vulnerable families on the brink of homelessness were being locked out. “The government has made it harder to apply and stay in housing, and has reduced the amount of public housing available,” he said. “More women and children … are without accommodation and living in danger.” Housing Minister Wendy Lovell’s spokeswoman said a drop in spending was largely attributed to the drying up of federal funding. ‘‘Construction of properties continues,’’ she said. ‘‘Since November 2010, the Victorian government has acquired 6800 social housing properties.’’

A new outreach service for people interested in volunteering in the western suburbs was launched last week. Volunteer West, in partnership with Medicare Local and Melton, Brimbank and Maribyrnong councils, has opened offices in the three municipalities in a bid to encourage more people to volunteer. General manager Emma Sharp said previously the organisation had been based in

Altona, and there were limited opportunities for prospective volunteers to meet with appropriate services. She said the new offices would benefit marginalised residents who felt more comfortable speaking in person. “Our mission is about making volunteering more accessible and for those people who need extra support and may just want face-to-face contact,” she said. “Volunteering is an important part of the whole community. Studies have shown it relates to improvements in general health and

Bacchus Marsh’s Joan Gauci-Quigley is a sister, daughter, friend, wife and breast cancer survivor. She will join hundreds of people at the MCG this Saturday to raise awareness of the life-threatening illness. “I lost my mother to breast cancer in 2008, and in 2011 my sister and I were both diagnosed,” she said. “The cause is close to my heart.” On May 10, the Cancer Council Victoria volunteer will join the Field of Women at the ‘G’ as one of 15,000 partners, supporters, friends and survivors who will stand to represent how many Australian woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. “My advice for all women is to keep up with self-examination… and go to your check-ups,” she said. The Field of Women will be held at the MCG before the Melbourne versus Western Bulldogs game. Tickets are $55 and include entry to the game afterwards. Hail, a happy vegie mite By Priscilla Moca A Bacchus Marsh backyard gardener has won first prize in this year’s Moorabool Best Backyard Vegie Patch competition. Allan Pryor, who has been gardening for more than 12 years, was judged on his summer garden, which included tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplant.

The first-time entrant said he was thrilled to be picked from more than 20 other backyard growers and take home $500. “I’m pretty passionate about my garden so it was great to be rewarded,” he said. “Our family and friends, who we often give produce to, were more excited than us.” The retired Clifton Park estate resident said he spent two hours a week tending his garden.

“If you miss those weekly hours, then it becomes a chore to bring it back to normal,” he says. “I find it very relaxing. I’ll have a coffee and look after it. I wish weeds would grow more quickly at times, to give me more to do. As the colder months roll around, Allan will tend a winter garden that includes silverbeet, spring onions, lettuce and broccoli.

Police clock car at 173km/h

A 34-year-old Hillside man had his GT Falcon turbo impounded after he was allegedly caught doing almost triple the speed limit in Laverton North last Thursday morning. Police were conducting speed checks on Hume Road when they clocked a car allegedly travelling at 173km/h in a 60km/h zone about 4.45am. The driver was interviewed in relation to speeding offences and is expected to be charged on summons.

The grandmother of a seven-year-old girl allegedly mauled by the grandparent’s prized sheep dog at their Balliang farm never called an ambulance in the belief it wasn’t an emergency, a court heard. Denise Wilson’s granddaughter was allegedly bitten by kelpie Mack on June 22 last year. The Ballarat Magistrates Court heard that the girl was rushed to hospital by her father and later underwent reconstructive microsurgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital to repair her face. Giving evidence on April 29, Ms Wilson, who is charged over the alleged attack – alongside her husband, Stuart, and son, Anthony – said her granddaughter said she didn’t want an ambulance. The parents of the victim have called for the dog to be destroyed. Denise, Anthony and Stuart Wilson are each charged with offences relating to injuries caused by the dog bite. The hearing is expected to conclude on May 27.

Melton council has issued more than 500 notices to graffiti vandals and litter-bugs since the launch of its Litter Education and Prevention Program in October 2011. A report tabled at last week’s council meeting stated about $300,000 was spent every year on graffiti removal. In 2012-13, 785 tonnes of dumped material was collected by the council with disposal costs reaching $67,620. Coburn ward councillor Sophie Ramsey commended mayor Bob Turner for pushing the graffiti agenda.

Spencer qualified by winning the Bendigo Thousand in March. He narrowly missed out on making the final of the Stawell Gift, placing second in the semi-final. Spencer started running in primary school and developed a talent in sprint races. “In my first year, I could barely make the top 10 in my club. Second year, I came second in the state. In my third year, I won nationals.”

Melton residents will have to wait to see a piece of Diggers Rest history go on show. The council last week said there were no appropriate facilities to display a model of American escapologist Harry Houdini’s aircraft. The model aircraft was constructed to celebrate Houdini’s famous flight 100 years ago at Diggers Rest. The council will consider including the model at the proposed Diggers Rest Community Centre to be constructed in 2018-19.

A move to commit funding to improve safety for Taylors Hills motorists was knocked back at last week’s Melton council meeting. Watts ward councillor Lara Carli wanted the council to commit to funding in preparation for the duplication of Hume Drive. She said the funding would be used to prepare a traffic study and design for the duplication.

suburbs with contempt because they’re safe seats for Labor, so they tend to take them for granted. We’re out there actually creating jobs, improving infrastructure and delivering for the western suburbs. In last year’s budget, we provided funding for new schools at Melton, Wyndham Vale and Truganina. We built the special school at Laverton, again, an area neglected under the previous government. I think the people there need to question their allegiance to the Labor Party, because while Labor talk about things, we actually do them. The brutal stabbing in Sunshine last month saw an outpouring of community support. In terms of family violence, what can be done to prevent these kinds of attacks? These are challenges for our whole community. We as a government have significantly increased funding to tackle family violence. We’re spending a lot of money working with groups that assist victims of family violence. We’re also spending significant money dealing with perpetrators; I believe that if you want to prevent family violence then you need to work with men who have a tendency to be violent and help them deal with their behaviour. Will the state government fund a 24-hour police station in Caroline Springs? The government will continue to monitor police services in growth communities and will consider any proposals put forward by Victoria Police and the chief commissioner.

A passion for business and innovative marketing strategy has earned Eynesbury Homestead and Golf Course the Mayoral Achievment Award at this year’s Powercor Australia City of Melton Business Excellence Awards.

Many could only dream of playing golf all day but Brad Alton is living out this dream.

Eynesbury Homestead is a beautiful well maintained historic building built in the 1870s.

“The award means a lot to me. I’m ecstatic just to be a finalist and to be nominated by my colleagues and team members tells me that I’m on the right track.”

It is a premier golf course, restaurant, bar, café and conference centre which specialises in weddings. The facilities and grounds at this historical estate are immaculately kept and provides visitors with a sense of a world gone-by. Management at Eynesbury Homestead are passionate advocates for the business, coming up with new campaigns and events to attract residents, golfers and brides from near and far. Their packages are tailored to reflect different target markets and budgets and they have recently established strong partnerships with industry groups to increase visitation. Attracting guests from the region, from interstate and overseas, Eynesbury Golf and Homestead is a tournamentstandard course and premier venue in Melbourne’s west, complementing the worldclass tourist attractions and businesses within the City of Melton.

The 22-year-old is a trainee golf professional and has been named this year’s Apprentice of the Year in the Powercor Business Excellence Awards.

He started playing golf in Melton at the age of 10, prompting his career ambitions to become a professional golfer on the completion of his apprenticeship at Eynesbury Golf Course. He works full time in the Eynesbury Golf Shop, dealing with people, managing co-workers, demonstrating leadership, coaching juniors and playing golf competitively. Now in his third year, Alton will complete his apprenticeship in September and says the he has learned a lot. “I started off in a very average role, doing odd jobs and earning my keep and over the past three years I have worked my way up in the business and grown a lot. I’ve now taken on more responsibilities in the business in an administrative role with more challenges.” Alton is part of the coaching team at Eynesbury Golf and trains juniors and senior players. He says it’s his passion for the sport which drives him. “I’ve got a pure love for the game and the industry. It’s a dream job to play golf and do what I love every day. My favourite part of the job is coaching and seeing players develop.” After his apprenticeship Alton will be a full PGA member, enabling him to play professionally, coach throughout Australia and potentially run a business under the PGA logo.
