We may be a small town but we’re important, our children are important and the future of our town is important.” Councillors met with representatives from MBC, Transurban and the Westgate Tunnel Project last week, but Cr Edwards said they were left frustrated by a lack of transparency. “Council again asked for technical assessments on environmental, socio-economic, amenity and traffic impacts to be provided, but there was no commitment to do so,” he said. “For the sake of transparency, we need to see the nine technical impact assessments and the
Human Health and Ecological Health Risk Assessment. “If what we’re being told is true, then these reports could help to alleviate community concern. “Councils must, under Acts of Parliament, consult with their communities on a whole range of matters. The state government should do the same when it comes to big projects that impact the lives of Bacchus Marsh residents.” Local MPs and councillors are expected to attend the public meeting, however a Facebook post from councillor Tonia Dudzik last week said that representatives from MBC and Transurban would not attend.

There is growing community anger at plans to dump contaminated soil near Bacchus Marsh. Maddingley Brown Coal (MBC) has confirmed it has tendered to act as a receiving facility for unclassified spoil generated from the West Gate Tunnel Project. However Moorabool council says it has been ‘shut out’ of the process and community concerns are being ignored. “Bacchus Marsh residents are being left out of the conversation,” mayor David Edwards said last week. A public meeting will be held at the Bacchus
Marsh Hall from 7pm on February 25 to discuss the planned toxic storage. Bacchus Marsh resident Kat Barlow said the meeting was about sending a message. “I think everyone’s feeling very frustrated that there’s been no community consultation with regards to huge amounts of toxic soil coming here,” Ms Barlow said. “There’s 18,000 residents affected, and 6000 within three kilometres of the site. It’s just horrifying. “We want an environmental impact study done before it’s even talked about coming here. “We want our voices heard and we want to show that we are a powerful force and are

Parking increase for Melton By Ewen McRae Hundreds of car park spaces in the Melton town centre are set for increased time limits, under a push from the council to boost business. The council is recommending the changes based on a public car parking study that reviewed parking demand and patterns in the business area surrounding High Street, between Station Road and Yuille Street. The study found that the current number of public parking spaces in the area met the need during the peak demand, but that more of the

The council is proposing to change the time limits of 266 parking spaces from two hours to four hours, 90 spaces from unrestricted to four hours, and three two-hour spaces to two disabled car parks. Melton mayor Lara Carli said the proposed changes were designed to
inform council’s final decision on the proposed changes.” A previous study on public car parking in Melton – completed in June 2019 – found that the peak occupancy rate of spaces was 66 per cent, and rejected a push for multi-storey parking in the area. “The study concluded that there is sufficient parking within the Melton township as a whole to meet the current peak parking demands,” the officers report stated. New classes a hit with learners A new range of adult education classes is creating a buzz in Melton. The classes – which run at the Djerriwarrh education and community services neighbourhood house – have included a special series of lessons in Moroccan cooking, run by local chef Abder Said. The classes have been a hit, with a Djerriwarrh spokesperson saying it had been a welcome addition to their timetable of classes. “Abder has such a huge passion for cooking, and people are calling [the course] more of an experience than a class,” the spokesperson said.
“Everyone that’s come along has had a great time learning to preserve, getting fresh stuff from the garden and turning it into a great meal, and it’s really big on healthy cooking on a budget, which has been great to see. “It’s a very engaging lesson and the feedback we’ve had from the first two weeks has been fantastic. I think it will become a really popular course.” The neighbourhood house also has pre-accredited and accredited education courses in English language, sewing and cleaning which have seen a number of participants gain

A new business permit application process at Melton council is set to make things easier for local businesses. The new Business Concierge Service allows users to lodge just one application for multiple permits such as planning, building, environmental, and outdoor trading permits, as well as liquor licences. The process will be case managed by a member of council’s economic development team who will guide users through the permit application process from start to finish. Melton mayor Lara Carli said the new service was about making it easier for local businesses to grow and prosper. “Supporting our business community is one of the most significant investments Melton City Council can make in nurturing a strong local economy and ensuring exciting job opportunities,” Cr Carli said. “The Business Concierge Service is part of our commitment as a Small Business Friendly Council, an initiative of the Victorian Small Business Commission. “Owners and entrepreneurs contributing to our city by starting or growing their business have our full support to establish themselves as quickly and smoothly as possible.” A checklist on the site will outline which permits you may need to apply for and how to choose the right permit for your business activities. Taylors Hill residents have more reasons to get out in the sunshine, following the opening of a new exercise and recreation area last week. The play space at Morton Homestead was unveiled on February 16, with representatives from council, state government, and local community groups among the first to enjoy the new facilities. The development includes new playground equipment with accessible pathways, nature play areas, barbecue facilities, picnic tables with chess boards, a shelter, exercise equipment, and a community garden which the Taylors Hill Men’s Shed will maintain. Joint health service talks begin By Ewen McRae Community consultation on a potential amalgamation of health services in the west has begun, however a final decision is still months away. Discussions between Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health about the potential amalgamation began in December, when it was announced that Western Health would run the future Melton Hospital. Under the Health Services Act, any amalgamation would be voluntary, require agreement from both boards and need to
demonstrate benefit to the community. A community engagement process on the amalgamation began on February 10, with the Better Health for the West website launched to give residents a chance to voice concerns and ask questions about the proposal. So far the consultation has included staff and senior leaders from both health services, hospital and health service support and advisory groups, and fundraising groups that support the health services, such as the Bacchus Marsh Ladies Auxiliary. Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health Services cater for the healthcare needs of
985,000 people. Together, they employ more than 7600 people across 13 campuses and sites. The two health services released a joint statement in December, saying it was important to ensure the west was getting the best possible health care. “The [Melton Hospital] announcement opens the way for a wider examination of the future of healthcare needs of Melbourne’s west,” the statement said. “Given this major development in the two catchments, and following four years of close partnership between the services, the Western Health board and Djerriwarrh Health Service’s
administrator have agreed to explore the best possible options and opportunities for healthcare in Melbourne’s west. “Western Health and Djerriwarrh already share services, have overlapping boundaries and are increasingly interdependent. Increasing collaboration will better serve the people of Melbourne’s western growth corridor.” A report on the amalgamation will be submitted to the boards of both health services by April at the earliest. If the boards agree to the amalgamation, a report will be presented to the Department of Health and Human Services. Details: hbetterhealthforthewest.com.au/
Call for more volunteers The Bacchus Marsh Ladies Auxiliary is looking for some help. The group runs the Op Shop on Gell Street, with all funds raised going towards new equipment and services for the Bacchus Marsh Hospital. The group has a dedicated core of volunteers, but more are needed to help with sorting donated items, running the shopfront, and general day-to-day work around the store Djerriwarrh Health chief executive Belinda Scott said the group had been one of the longest-running supporters of the hospital, and played a vital role in the community. “The Bacchus Marsh Ladies Auxiliary are such an amazing group of women within the Bacchus Marsh community who fully support the Bacchus Marsh Hospital, and have done so for 72 years,” Ms Scott said. “Most recently the funds raised by the BMLA
have enabled Djerriwarrh Health Services to purchase patient care equipment such as cardiac monitors in Urgent Care Bacchus Marsh and equipment for the operating theatre upgrade.” As well as helping generate much-needed funds for the hospital, volunteers have made long-lasting friendships from the group, and helped in other ways around the Bacchus Marsh community. Hawks look to sell out of west By Daniel Cherny (The Age) and Ewen McRae Hawthorn Football Club has confirmed it is exploring the possibility of selling the WestWaters Hotel in Caroline Springs, one of two poker machine venues it operates. Hawks president Jeff Kennett said Hawthorn are exploring the possibility of selling some of their poker machines but insists it is not part of a philosophical switch from the club to exit the gambling industry. As the Hawks look to fund their $100 million
training base in Dingley, Mr Kennett said Hawthorn was open to selling the Caroline Springs venue, which houses 90 of the 165 poker machines owned by the club. The Hawks also own the Waverley at Vegas Gardens venue. But despite pressure from lobby groups, the fact a raft of other Victorian AFL clubs have left pokies in recent years, and a recent push from Hawthorn premiership player James Morrissey for the Hawks to leave the gaming industry, Mr Kennett was adamant last week that Hawthorn were not looking to get out of

pokies completely. “We’re building a new facility at Dingley and as part of that we’re having a look at the value of some of our assets that might be converted to assist us with the build at Dingley, Kennett told The Age. Asked directly whether it was a philosophical
change, Mr Kennett said: “No, no. Certainly not. Far from it. “[WestWaters] is worth a considerable amount of money, we invested in it years ago. We’re just testing the market to see whether it’s possible to convert that asset into a sum of money that will help us with the Dingley project, so it’s all exploratory at the moment. The Hawks made $24.8 million from pokies last year, the most of any club. Melton council voted in December 2018 to extend the Essendon Football Club lease of Melton Country Club until 2047.
Park Run hits the Marsh Runners of Bacchus Marsh, it’s time to lace up those sneakers. This weekend will see the first official Park Run at Peppercorn Park, with the global craze spreading its wings into the town for the first time. While Park Run – a weekly social 5km running/walking event – has been in Melton and Wyndham Vale for a number of years, event director Adrian Hillyer said it was time for the event to have a local staging. “Having recently moved to the area and wanting to get involved in the community, I thought this would be a great thing for the town, he said. “I’ve done Park Runs in the area I used to live, and I wanted to bring that experience here. “I did the one in Toolern Creek in Melton, and there were people there who were travelling every week from Bacchus Marsh, so there’s obviously enough demand for this.
Two trial runs have already been staged for the event, with the first drawing 33 runners and the second bringing 89 to run the course. Mr Hillyer said it was the laid-back nature of the event which made it so popular. “A local Park Run creates a community feeling, he said. “It gives people the chance to volunteer and give back, it creates new friendships, and it’s a free way to help improve your fitness in whatever way you’re able. “Just come along and have fun. The Peppercorn Park Park Run will officially start on February 29, with runners asked to arrive for a briefing at 7.50am before the run kicks off at 8am. Fine for industrial waste leak By Ewen McRae A Ravenhall concrete company has been handed a heavy fine, after being found guilty of dumping industrial waste. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) prosecuted Economix Pty Ltd after a routine inspection revealed waste running from the company’s Ravenhall property into a drain. At the Sunshine Magistrates Court last week, the company was fined $10,000 for failing to prevent liquid spills from entering stormwater
drains and dumping industrial waste and slurry onto neighbouring land. EPA Western Metropolitan regional manager Stephen Lansdell said the company had failed to fix the problem after the leak was first detected. “After initial investigations observed pollution leaving the site, EPA issued a Pollution Abatement Notice (PAN) requiring the company to install controls to prevent its run-off going to stormwater drains,” Mr Lansdell said. “The next inspection showed the work had not been done.
“A later inspection at another Economix site on Terror Street, Keilor Park, revealed slurry had flowed under a wire fence and formed a 30m x 10m pool on neighbouring land. “The slurry and piles of loose material, including gravel and stones, had also escaped, which were industrial waste and the neighbouring property was not licensed to accept it.” The EPA fined the company $8060 for each of the two offences, however the company opted to have the matter heard in court. The court fined Economix $10,000 without
conviction and ordered the company to pay EPA’s legal costs of $1878. “The court’s decision in this case is a clear message to industry that all businesses must prevent pollution and waste from their premises,” Mr Lansdell said. “This company had the opportunity to comply with an official notice from EPA … and there were consequences when it didn’t,” he said. The investigation had begun with a call from a member of the public and involved officers from EPA and the City of Brimbank.
Celebrating women The Zonta Club of Melton will host a dinner next month as part of International Women’s Day celebrations, and is calling on local women to be part of it. The club, which is part of the international Zonta family that supports and champions women, holds the dinner each year, and club member Judy Carter said it was always a highlight. “We’ve been doing this dinner for 18 years now and it’s always a great night,” Ms Carter said. “It’s about celebrating women and recognising the amazing work we do in many different areas. “The club does a lot locally, like providing school scholarships for young girls, or working with domestic violence groups, so it’s nice to have a night like this to celebrate that.” The group also donated a purple bench to Hannah Watts Park recently, dedicated to domestic violence survivors. A plaque on the
bench has information about local domestic violence assistance. While the group has grown to 20 members in recent years, Ms Carter said they’d love to see some more join up. “We were down to just six (members) at one point so we have grown a bit, but a few more would be nice,” she said. The highlight of each dinner is the guest speaker, which in past years has included Catriona Rowntree, Christine Nixon and Jo Stanley This year, former refugee now community lawyer Fadak Alfayadh will speak about her passion for gender equality and embracing Australia’s strength in diversity. The dinner will run on March 6 at Tabcorp Park. Ticket are $70 with bookings essential at www.trybooking.com/BHNPJ by February 25. Ewen McRae

From its vast landscaped surrounds to its expansive interiors, this striking house promises a resort lifestyle. The entry opens to a home theatre room on one side and a study on the other. There’s also a carpeted main bedroom featuring a large walk-in robe and a designer wall overlooking the en suite. Here a corner spa enhances the pale, tiled space with its smart timber vanity. Floor tiles continue through to an open-concept living area where the meals and family zones meet the kitchen. A large island bench with granite benchtops, stainless-steel appliances, loads of cabinetry and beautiful timber finishes create a space fit for a gourmet cook. Two further bedrooms with built-in robes are near a large family bathroom. Out the back, an entertainer’s paradise awaits. A fully-fenced in-ground pool, pool house, barbecue area, basketball court, putting green and a cubby house are some of the delights awaiting new owners. A triple garage takes care of parking and the side driveway has an electric gate allowing access to the backyard. Practical additions such as water tanks and a large shed/workshop have also been considered. Evaporative cooling and ducted heating keep temperatures comfortable year-round and an alarm system offers security.

Centrals finish season on top Melton Centrals claimed the minor premiership in the Cricket Victoria Community Cricket north west B one-day competition. Already guaranteed a top two finish, Centrals took on Geelong in a top of the table clash on Sunday, with the match deciding which side would finish top. Geelong is the only team to beat Centrals this season. Centrals got the win and the momentum heading into finals. Melton made 4-113 before bowling Geelong out for 87. The six points for the win put Centrals five points clear of Geelong Melton will now face Hoppers Crossing for a spot in the grand final in a knockout semi final on Sunday. Geelong faces Coburg in the other semi final. A final round loss ended St Anthony’s chances of a first finals series. Sitting in fourth heading into the final round, the Saints needed a win with other teams right on their heels. It wasn’t to be, with the Saints losing to Plenty Valley. The Saints made 134, as they were bowled out in the 30th over. Eva Lavanda top scored with 69. Plenty Valley made the runs with ease, finishing 3-136. The Saints finished sixth, five points outside the top four.

Bacchus Marsh fell just short of claiming an outright win against Riddell in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. In a battle for third and fourth spot, the Bulls were hoping to open up a bit of a gap over Sunbury United with a big win against Riddell. Having managed to get a day’s play in last week, unlike the other three matches, it opened an opportunity up for the Bulls having claimed first innings points last week. Bacchus Marsh batted on and made 4-217 with skipper James Lidgett finishing 122 not out. Lidgett has had an outstanding season, with six scores of 50. It gave the Bulls a lead of 129 on the first innings. Riddell finished 7-99 in its second innings, with Heath Wadden top scoring with 31. Bacchus Marsh sits in third spot, 1.40 points clear of Sunbury United heading into the final round. Diggers Rest Bulla returned to the winners list against St Anthony’s, after a last up loss to Gisborne. The Burras made 8-232 at nearly a run a ball. Indika Massalage top scored with 62, as four players reached at least 30. Wayne Turner took four wickets for the Saints. The Saints, who are looking to avoid relegation, were bowled out for 83. The Burras shared the wickets around, with three players taking two wickets each. The Burras have already secured second spot and a home semi final. Meanwhile the Saints remain 4.40 points clear on Riddell in the battle to avoid relegation. In other matches, Gisborne had an easy win against Romsey, while Sunbury United was too good for Woodend.

15 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 25 February, 2020
SPORT Hope dwindling for United as run of losses continues Western United is drifting further away from the light at the end of the tunnel. United’s post-Christmas A-League form line makes for dire reading with just one win, one draw and five losses. The goals have dried up for United in the past three rounds, including Friday night’s 2-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix in Wellington. It has seen United’s top six chances significantly dwindle as they are now five points back from sixth place with eight games to play. Western United coach Mark Rudan is trying to stay upbeat and is holding on to anything remotely positive in his side’s performances during a tough run. After a hellish first half against the Phoenix, United at least fought it out in the second half and had moments where they looked like they could steal a point. “The attitude and the effort in the second
A-League - Round 20 Wellington Phoenix 2 (Cacace 29, Ball 90) d Western United 0 At Wellington Regional Stadium half was fantastic and that’s what we want to see,” Rudan said. “We couldn’t finish off all those entries into the final third, not through a lack of trying. Certainly the first half was a charge of the light brigade. “They were just at us non stop.” All that stood in the way of Western United and a heavy defeat was stellar goalkeeping from Filip Kurto. Could Kurto take out the A-League goalkeeper of the year award for a second season running? After making a succession of tough saves
from well drilled shots, Kurto came undone by Phoenix winger Liberato Cacace in the 29th minute. It is debatable whether Cacace’s shot was in fact a shot as it appeared as though it could have been a cross that slewed off the side of his boot and inside the far post. Only Cacace will know his intentions and it mattered little as it put the Phoenix up and deservedly so after their dominant first half. The second half was encouraging from Western United as it had the home side pinned to their back third for much of the half. Tomoki Imai and Connor Pain were driving forces for United, while Max Burgess was lively after replacing the injured Panagiotis Kone, who hurt a forearm. While United had many incursions into the front third, there was a serious disconnect with striker Besart Berisha, who barely had a sniff of goal and grew more and more frustrated with
Melton moves into six By Tara Murray Melton has its finals hopes in its own hands in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west competition. With 11 teams still in the mix for a finals berth, the Lions’ win against Noble Park on Saturday moved them to fifth spot ahead of a final round clash against third-placed Yarraville. Win against Yarraville and the Lions play finals, a loss means they will have to rely on other results to go their way. Lions director of coaching Anthony Gale said winning was key for keeping their season alive. “A win next week and we play finals and you can’t ask for much more. “It’s a really even competition. If we can beat a side in the top six in the final round, we deserve to play finals. “It will be a good test and we’re looking forward to it.” Gale said they put together a polished all-round performance to seal the win against Noble Park at the weekend. Noble Park batted first and was bowled out for 149. Gale said he thought it was a par score on their home ground. “It’s a slow ground and we struggled to chase down 116 a couple of weeks ago,” he said. “We bowled and fielded really well.” Jake Charge was the pick of the bowlers taking 4-22, as four bowlers took wickets. Melton started off slowly in the run chase and lost some early wickets. It was dealt a further blow when Ben MacRae had to retire due to illness. Gale said he was unsure how MacRae had even played to begin with. Nathan Taylor and Brad Jones stood strong in the middle order and guided the side to victory in the 43rd over. Melton finished 2-150 with Taylor finishing 65 not out and Jones making 49 not out. Jones promoted himself up the order and it proved to be the right move. “We’ve spoken about our batting line-up being a bit fragile, but it was an all round polished performance,” Gale said. “We had to be patient and play smart cricket. We were able to build partnerships and didn’t lose clumps of wickets. “The skipper stepped up in a surprisingly high spot for him. “He’s always been a good batter, he is a nice sweet timer of the ball. The two boys got it done.” The Lions’ second XI has already sealed its finals spot heading into the final round.
Jake Charge celebrates one of his wickets. (Damjan Janevski) 204697_05
The last time the second XI played finals was 2013-14. Gale thinks he is the only player currently playing to have played finals at the club. “We were really keen to play finals,” he said.
16 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 25 February, 2020
“Damien [Costigan], who has led them, has had to do it a bit tough the first few years, so it’s good for them to make finals. “Hopefully we can go in and get a finals win which would be good.”
the sub-standard service. Despite the lean times in the new year, Rudan is not one to wave the white flag and expects his team to continue pushing hard for finals. United will host Central Coast Mariners – the only side United have beaten in 2020 – at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday at 4pm. Meanwhile, local teams are starting to be drip fed into the FFA Cup. West Point’s experience was short-lived, pummeled 5-0 by Albert Park on neutral territory in the second qualifying round at McIvor Reserve on Saturday. Truganina Hornets will enter the competition against Old Camberwell Grammarians this weekend, while Laverton will host Chelsea, Barnstoneworth United will take on Kings Domain and Balmoral and Melbourne City will square off in an all-west affair. Lance Jenkinson
Confidence starting to grow for Rams The positivity is starting to grow at Rockbank ahead of the Riddell District Football League season. After a couple of tough seasons with no wins on the board, the Rams are hoping to be more competitive this year under new coach Marty Weaver. Weaver said the feeling within the club had changed since he had arrived in November. “Things are good and we’re starting to really improve with numbers on the track,” he said. “The atmosphere around the club is exciting. There’s exciting times ahead. We play Melton [Centrals] in round one and we want to go out there and be competitive.” The Rams have so far added about 12 new senior players, whom they expect will bring some experience and make them more competitive. Among the recruits is Campbell Walshe, who played in the RDFL many years ago. He returns after stints in the Western Region and Central Highlands football leagues. Tyler Nesbit comes across from Gordon, while Paul Growcott will be a playing assistant coach. Growcott has previously coached Caroline Springs and Laverton and will provide plenty of experience. Will and Mike Gregson, who have both played with the New Zealand side in a World Cup, have also joined the club. The Rams have lost best and fairest winner Jordan Baumgartner and his brother Mitchell. Weaver said it was disappointing to lose both of them, but there were family commitments behind the decision. Weaver said there was still a few recruits that they’re yet to announce. The addition of so many players will flow on to the reserves. The past couple of years some players have had to double-up and play both seniors and reserves but this season they have enough players to field two full senior teams. Weaver said players will have to work for spots. The Rams kick off their season on April 18 against Melton Centrals. Tara Murray

Winning debut for Stanley filly Soho Almasi The Mick Stanley stable rolled out another impressive two-year-old debutant while claiming a winning double at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night. Two weeks after Soho Lanikai turned heads with a brilliant 65m success at his first run, stablemate Soho Almasi starred with a 20m triumph in the Allied Express 2YO Classic (1720m) for fillies. The horse was barely troubled on her way to victory in a mile rate of 1:56.3 and plans are now there to take her to Sydney for the Group 2 Pink Bonnet Stakes next weekend. “She was a filly that I saw at the sales and she was a big lump of a filly. I didn’t have her marked down, but when I walked past her she caught my eye and I thought she looked too good to be no good so I bought her,” Stanley, the trainer and driver, said.
“She hasn’t put a foot wrong. For a Mach Three, she’s a beautiful relaxed filly, got great manners and a great deal of ability. “Twelve months ago (owner) Rob (Watson) said I was a bad judge and I wasn’t allowed to buy any, but this year I bought Soho Lanikai and her so hopefully I’ve justified my eye.” Soho Almasi, which is out of Fususi, was purchased for $25,000 at the Sydney APG sales last year. Stanley was back in the winner’s enclosure a short time later when American Zest won the Schweppes Pace (2240m, NR 70-79). With Stanley again at the controls, he came with a three-wide run in the last lap to score victory over Glenn Douglas-trained Wotchawaitingfor. It was American Zest’s first win since December last year and his 11th in a career
spanning 46 starts. The features on Saturday night were the Jack Collins Memorial Pace (2240m, NR 80-94) and the Allied Express Ian Daff Memorial (1720m, mares NR 70-99) and they were won by Ross Graham-trained Animated and Margaret Lee’s Keayang Liberty respectively. Kate Gath shared driving honours with Stanley after she also scored a winning double. Gath partnered Peter Thompson-trained Ymbro Wasted to take out the Alderbaran Park Vicbred Trot (2240m, NR 70-85) and Beefour Bacardi, trained by her husband Andy, to prevail in the TAB Multiplier Trot (1720m, NR 52-61). Racing returns to Melton on Saturday for a huge night of action that includes four Group 1 events. Tim O’Connor

RDFNL The Riddell District Football Netball League will face the Southern Football Netball League in an interleague clash on May 16. With AFL Victoria deciding not to hold the AFL Victoria Community Championships, leagues were left to rearrange their own interleague matches. The RDFNL and Southern FNL played each other last year, with the RDFNL winning both the senior netball and football in thrillers. New Woodend-Hesket coach Ben Tankard has been appointed
the RDFNL football coach for a second straight year.

Melton South Royals know a strong performance on the final day of the regular season of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield should seal a finals spot. With six sides fighting for the four finals spots, a poor performance will prove costly for a couple of teams. After day one of the final round of matches, the Royals are on top against Bellbridge. Royals captain-coach Matthew Kozole said they were happy with where they were sitting. “We’re pretty confident that we can get the runs needed,” he said. “Looking at some of the other results, a win should get us into finals. “We’ll go about our business as normal during the week. Hopefully we can get the runs.” The Royals spinners were the ones that got the job done with the ball, able to restrict Bellbridge to 118. Kozole said had he been offered that total at the start of the day, he would have taken it. “We rolled up and the pitch was nothing short of a road,” he said. “Credit to the spinners, they were able to get the job done. Matt O’Brien who came back into the team after missing three weeks with a sore back, took seven wickets. “He’s critical to the side.” The Royals then had to face eight overs at the end of day one. They will resume at 2-20. Kozole said it would have been nice to go into day two with at least another wicket in the shed.
While fully focused on getting the points themselves, the Royals have one eye on other results. Of interest is top side Moonee Valley, who are in trouble in their run chase, while fourth placed Sunshine YCW has already conceded first innings points against Sunbury. The Royals need to overtake just one of those two teams to finish in the top four. Kozole said they would just focus on what they needed to do this week. “It’s shown how close the top six is,” he said. “We can do what we can do and get the win firstly, then worry about everything else.” Kozole said his side’s biggest issue in the second part of the season had been consistency with their playing line-up. There’s been a number of changes each week. He said if they make finals, they’re not there to make up the numbers. “It will be a four horse race, any one can beat any one.” In other matches, Sydenham-Hillside has already claimed first innings points in division 3. The Storm bowled Point Cook out for 95, before reaching 6-116 at stumps. In division 4, Caroline Springs has a solid chase on its hands against East Coburg. East Coburg were bowled out for 172, with Gayashan Weerasekara taking 3-34 for the Falcons. Caroline Springs had to face one over at the end of the day, finishing 0-4. Melton Centrals will be after quick wickets on day two against Aberfeldie Park. Centrals were bowled out for 120. They had Aberfeldie Park 2-12 at stumps.

Nissan Warrior is battle-ready By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE
Nissan recently stepped into the hairy-chested premium ute ring, up against the likes of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, HSV SportsCat, Mazda Boss and Toyota Rogue, Dodge Ram and HSV Silverado – with the Navara N-Trek Warrior. Unlike these pickup prize fighters, the Nissan truck is offering something different – input from Aussie automotive product development and engineering consultancy Premcar – to take on the toughest conditions demanded by owners in the dual cab 4x4 ute market. Enhancements in wheel, tyre and suspension come up with better ground clearance and improved ride and handling, while wider stance, redesigned front end, plus new Cooper all-terrain rubber, complete a range of rugged visual cues. A carryover from the basic N-Trek black standard features, the Warrior includes fender flares, alloy sports bar, headlamp bezels, side steps, rear vision mirror caps with dark orange accent, rear bumper, front grille, door handles and roof rails. The Navara N-Trek Warrior comes in two versions powered by Nissan’s 2.3-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo engine, mated with either a six-speed manual, or seven-speed automatic transmission. The test vehicle was the latter, which would set back the buyer $65,490, plus on-road costs. The manual Warrior comes in at $62,990, plus ORC.
bar and a Navara decal taking pride of place across the tailgate. Dark orange accented fog lamp bezel has an integrated ‘bark buster’ and 3mm stainless-steel provides front underbody protection. Special design 17-inch black alloy wheels have been downsized from N-Trek 18-inch alloys.

The White Diamond Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior test vehicle never stopped announcing its presence with decals everywhere. The decal package includes a hoopless, body-coloured steel bulbar with integrated 470mm LED light
Occupants have the benefit of a smart key, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the driver gets help slotting the big bugger (nearly five-and-half metres long) into car park spots with a 360-degree cameras.

Engines / transmissions The 2.3-litre twin turbo four-cylinder diesel engine delivers 140 kW and 450 Nm, through a seven-speed automatic transmission in the case of the test vehicle.
Safety Though it’s equipped with seven airbags, the big Nissan Warrior would not rate a five-star rating today, because of the lack of active safety features such as autonomous emergency braking and active cruise control. However, all Navaras have standard vehicle dynamic control, brake limited slip differential,
The high revving engine produces enough power to handle various loads but with its high-pitched note fails to walk the beat of the robust sporty ute. Wide tyres add road noise and a turning circle of 12.7 metres makes it hard work in tight carparks. Nissan puts fuel consumption at 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/ highway cycle, which was held up by the test car turning in 10.6 l/100km and 6.4 l/100km. A 40mm increase in ride height comes courtesy of off-road capable springs and dampers, coupled with Cooper Discoverer AT3 All-Terrain tyres increasing by a further 25 mm. Ground clearance is a huge 268mm, with improved approach angle of 35 degrees and widened track of 1600mm. The Warrior retains the standard Navara’s 3.5-tonne towing capacity and a payload of 724kg.
Summing up Who would have thought dual-cab utes would have become the best-selling vehicles in Australia? With this in mind, Nissan has a Warrior that could rattle a few of the enemy.

Ford’s Puma is about to pounce By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Ford has announced its Puma will be on sale in Australia in the second half of 2020. A small crossover SUV, Puma is described by Ford as an “urban SUV”. It will be a little brother to Ford Escape, Endura and Everest. It will be a competitor for the big selling Mitsubishi ASX, the Honda HR-V and the just released Mazda CX-30. Styling is more tall hatchback than SUV, with a low front and an interesting iteration of the current Ford grille and lights, bold side lines that join dramatic rear guards, cleverly leading to rear sloping roofl ine giving it semi-coupe silhouette.
‘‘
appeal to customers looking for a fun-to-drive, stylish SUV - Kay Hart
’’
Puma was launched in Europe with only a manual gearbox, but presumably Australian versions will be an automatic transmission. “Puma will appeal to customers looking for a fun-to-drive, stylish SUV that’s loaded with smart tech,” said Kay Hart, president and chief executive Ford Australia and New Zealand. “The Puma is a great opportunity for us to connect with Australian customers in a new way, and we’re excited that it will arrive alongside the new-generation Escape in Australian showrooms in 2020.” Further specification and pricing of the all-new Ford Puma will be announced ahead of its arrival in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2020.
Sleek lines of new Ford Puma are almost coupe rather than SUV.
