The heart of the matter

SES training hits new high

(Damjan Janevski)

By Helen Grimaux Nurses are often called “unsung heroes”, working as they do at the coalface of myriad health issues that impact on people’s lives temporarily and permanently. Strokes and heart attacks are two care specialities for nurses, and two of the main causes of long-term disability. Almost half a million Australians are living with the aftermath of strokes, which kill tens of thousands of people every year. Northern Hospital nurse Anne Rodda is one of 20 finalists in the National Stroke Foundation’s 2014 ‘stroke-care champion’ award, having been selected from more than 70 others around the country. Her big “push”, Ms Rodda said, was to increase awareness about the signs of an impending stroke. “The first four-and-a-half hours after the start of symptoms are critical,” she said. Symptoms include facial droop, weakness on one side that makes lifting arms difficult, not being able to walk, changes in vision, and speech that is suddenly slurred or nonsensical. The best response is to call triple-0 immediately. And the best preventative is to know your blood pressure. High blood pressure is “the big thing”, along with high cholesterol levels, smoking and an irregular heart beat, she said. Stress, diet and a lack of exercise all add to risk factors for stroke. Ms Rodda said the development of a thrombolysis service meant Northern Hospital’s stroke care unit was growing bigger and busier all the time. “We want a healthier northern community,” she said. The ‘stroke care champion’ award winner will be announced at the Stroke Society of Australasia Conference on July 31.

Craigieburn’s new emergency services training centre will start putting volunteers through their paces this month. Both volunteer and career emergency service personnel attached to a range of agencies will use the centre’s state-ofthe-arts props and equipment. The agencies include the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Country Fire Authority, Victoria Police, Victoria State Emergency Service, Ambulance Victoria, and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries. Training at the site is under way as MFB, CFA and SES personnel undergo train-the-trainer sessions. The first group of SES trainer volunteers starts work on July 27, with 12 CFA volunteer crews then lining up for summer-season training in October. An MFB-CFA joint recruit course for career firefighters will begin next month. Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells, who also holds the bushfire response portfolio, said the new $109 million centre “will embed an all-hazards, all-agencies approach to emergency management in Victoria.” “When our emergency services, both career and volunteer, are responding to a range of incidents across the state, we can be confident they’ve been provided with the best training resources in the nation.”

Latitude Thinking’s director, Sandra Seif, said many employers were holding on to old stereotypes about people with disabilities. “Employers don’t understand what the disability actually means or how to deal with it in the workplace,” Ms Seif said. “It’s quite sad, so [this] is about raising employer awareness. “They [people with disabilities] have been knocked back so many times and they don’t have the confidence to keep going for a job so it’s about motivating them and reinforcing 10012774-01-a15JuL©MMP

that communities are meant to be inclusive.” Latitude Thinking offers a free service to local employers and supports the workplace during an employee’s induction, as well as sending employed candidates to workplaces to talk about misconceptions about disabilities. Ms Seif said she had seen firsthand the positive effect Latitude Thinking’s candidates got from becoming employed. “They have been given a go and they realise they can do the job.”

About 23,000 people sleep rough around Victoria on any given night, and almost half of them are under 25. And there has been a 17 per cent rise in homelessness in the past five years, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Kids Under Cover national chief executive Jo Swift said research showed that 75 per cent of young people who experience homelessness would remain homeless as adults. “It’s vital to prevent youth homelessness,” Ms Swift said. One of Kids Under Cover’s main support programs is delivered into backyards and gardens of families, friends and foster carers of young people at risk – relocatable studios that offer supported independence and the chance to make it through school. Each studio costs about $50,000 and there are already 32 in Hume and Whittlesea, with four more on the way. Now the Caravan Industry Association of Victoria has thrown its weight behind the program. Chief executive Rob Lucas said six caravan manufacturers from Melbourne’s north, including Epping, Campbellfield and Craigieburn, had built a luxury family caravan, which will be raffled at Sandown Racecourse’s Melbourne Leisurefest on October 5. The aim is to raise $100,000 to build two new studios for Kids Under Cover. For details visit www. gomakesomememories.com.au

Across Whittlesea’s schools, sport teams, homes and workplaces, one in five people lives with a disability. That’s more than 35,000 people in this one city alone. Last week, Whittlesea council unveiled its third disability action plan, signifying the role of local government in co-ordinating and developing grassroots services that offer opportunities at home, work and play for people who are held back because of access and mobility impediments. The plan sets out seven main goals to help people with disabilities, such as promoting equal employment opportunities, inclusion in council’s consultation processes and developing accessible public spaces and transport options. Whittlesea Disability Network’s Jordan Plowman welcomed the new plan. “Any type of progress is good progress,” Mr Plowman said. “It’s good, but to make it better would be excellent for us.” Mr Plowman said he wanted the council to continue to put more handrails at stations and increase public transport access. According to the council, more than 35,000 people in Whittlesea have diverse physical and intellectual issues that give rise to special needs. As a result of its previous disability action plan (DAP 2009-12), the council set up a respite centre in Epping, created a city access guide and secured funding for holiday programs for children with disabilities. It also backed Latitude Thinking, a not-for-profit disability employment group, as part of its action plan. This Epping-based recruitment organisation helps people aged 16 to 60 with physical disabilities and mental illness to find employment in sectors such as retail, hospitality and manufacturing.

Hands-on skills get a boost Parade students can elect to study technology at each year level, with about 400 students currently studying technology. Their subject choices range from materials, design and production to electronics, robotics, VCE product design and technology and VCE systems engineering. The school also opened a trades training centre in 2010 to deliver certificate courses in building, brick-laying, electro-technology and furnishings. Principal Dr Denis Moore says many students find the hands-on nature of technology subjects fulfilling and the school is keen to offer the most stimulating learning environments for its students. “At Parade we take very seriously the research into boys’ best ways of learning and try to ensure a great variety of subjects and suitable teaching approaches.” Technology learning area head Joe Marchio led his teaching team and students in planning the renovations and updates, and doing the work in the past two years. Marchio says the updates stemmed from a team review of challenges in the technology classrooms. “We saw the need to redevelop the centre, the way we were teaching and the way students were learning,” he says. “Not everybody wants

Parade College’s budding engineers, industrial designers and technologists are discovering a new world of opportunities at the school’s newly renovated and updated technology learning centre. The revamped Monagle Technology Centre aims to advance technical learning for Parade students interested in design and production, with design rooms connected to production workshops equipped with up-to-the-minute tools and equipment. Parade College is Melbourne’s largest Catholic boys’ secondary school, with about 1900 students in year 7 to 12 at its Bundoora and Preston campuses. The school has been a pioneer and innovator in technical education since 1980, when it established its first senior-level technology courses. The updated technology centre at the school’s principal Bundoora campus allows students to get hands-on experience in design and technology subjects at all year levels as part of a new and innovative program designed for secondary students. Students will be able to use new equipment to design and manufacture products from wood, plastic and metal. They will also discuss and evaluate completed pieces in class presentations.

to make a model out of a piece of wood – some boys may want to work in metal or plastic or a combination of materials, and within a class you also have many different levels of skill and learning.” The solutions were straightforward – expand the focus of technology teaching into a wider range of materials to reflect contemporary production and to open up design and production areas to give students more latitude. “To allow students to work at their own pace, we opened up design rooms to adjacent production workshops so that students can work through the stages of design and production as they need to, with their teacher able to supervise and guide students in both areas,” Marchio says. Students helped make new workbenches and senior students have recently been asked to design improved storage and display systems for toolsets. At the end of last year, the school invested in new equipment to expand production into metals and plastics. Equipment lining the workshops’ walls includes a magna bender for forming metal, a vacuum former for plastics, a spot welder, as well as a furniture-making mortise, horizontal and vertical drills.

Upcoming purchases of a three-dimensional printer and a laser cutter will complete the inventory. Marchio says students get excited when they see the equipment because it means there are no limitations on what they can design and produce. “Our students come up with a lot of interesting designs – with the new equipment, they’ll be able to build a Formula One car if they want,” he says. “The way boys learn is by doing and they like to be active and continually challenged. They get all of that within the framework of technology. It develops their creativity, their skills and understanding of process and safety.” Learning briefs have been developed and introduced this year to lead technology classes through research, design, materials study, production, presentation and evaluation. Technology’s importance within the school curriculum has increased dramatically since 1980, when Marchio was appointed as Parade’s first technology teacher. “We had no equipment and the only available space was a basement where the cadets stored their ammunition,” he says. “I knew of all the equipment we would need that we couldn’t get by without a thicknesser. I found out there was one coming on a ship from Italy but it would cost $8000. So I went and asked for the money but the school had to cancel an order for new teachers’ desks to pay for it.” Marchio’s creative spirit ensured this wasn’t a financial burden on the school – “we bought the thicknesser and I made the desks.” Parade College, 1436 Plenty Road, Bundoora and 8 Clifton Grove, Preston. the middle years \ special report

A path to maturity This is a time to develop independence and resilience This all creates challenges for schools, particularly considering the wide variation in individuals both physically and emotionally. “Some … are still like young children, just moving out of their early childhood years,” Walker says. “Some children are already in early adolescence. “An astute awareness and deep level of

‘‘

’’

understanding about this range of development and maturity, and the complexity of influences and vulnerabilities is required by parents and particularly by teachers as children move across these middle years.” Walker believes schools should create a fluid, smooth and consistent approach in teaching, learning, well-being and culture across the middle years. She says good schools are using a range of innovative methods to deal with this important period. They include prep-to-year 12 schools grouping students in years such as 5 to 7 in ways that allow them to interact and support each other, such as multi-level home groups or “buddy” systems across year groups. Resilience is also key. By the time they reach grade 5, Walker says children should be aware that they will win and lose at school and in life. “Schools need to enhance practical ways of building real independence from prep onwards

Giving students a voice in an environment that reflects the growing identity and values of their group is crucial if they are to successfully navigate the middle years. Education expert and kathy Early Life Foundations walker founder Kathy Walker says the interests of children in grade 5 to year 8 should be part of their learning. While responsibility should be encouraged, Walker urges schools to use intrinsic strategies that increase enjoyment rather than extrinsic rewards and punishment. Walker says schools should also foster relationships. “Ensure they have a home group every day for relationships,” she says. “Don’t get so carried away with the fancy technology that we forget that the essence of being a human is relationships and effective communication.” Children in this age group (10-15) develop significantly in relation to their identity, values and peer relationships. Their brains and bodies are developing and they become more aware of their own world compared to that of their peers and other families. “They are influenced by hormones, by culture, by social media,” Walker says. “They are exposed these days much earlier to a range of influences that are sometimes beyond their own emotional maturity. It is a huge stage of the lifespan.”

geelong grammar

in real everyday ways, not just through ‘you can do it’ resilience programs. Kids need much more independence and interdependence once they reach the middle years.” As well as specific literacy and numeracy skills, Walker says this age group needs to be taught resilience, problem solving, creativity, lateral thought in decision-making, working alongside others, thinking about others and world events and self-regulation. Today’s middle-years students are digital natives, but Walker says their techno skills and access far exceed their emotional and social

maturity, creating a challenge for parents and schools. “Just because you can post something on Facebook doesn’t mean you have the emotional maturity or discernment to know how to handle it,” she says. Good parenting is crucial in this age group. “Children of all ages require limits, boundaries, consistency, reliability, fairness but firmness and strong relationships and clear communication between themselves and their parents. Technology definitely needs to be monitored and discussed with the kids so they can share in the rules that are made.”

Our Lady of Mercy College (OLMC) Heidelberg is a Catholic secondary girls’ college owned and administered by the Sisters of Mercy. We are the school of first choice for 1140 students and their families and the employer of choice for 150 staff. The College’s reputation and key strengths are grounded in a learning culture characterised by high expectations, continuous improvement and consistently good academic outcomes. We are proud of our impressive range of co-curricular activities and we are constantly upgrading our facilities to ensure they are conducive to contemporary learning and student engagement.

As part of the Year 9 cross-curricula program, HORIZON, students explore the theme of Justice and the role of evidence in the justice system. Molecular technology gives students the opportunity to understand the science of DNA fingerprinting and as part of this contemporary learning program it has enabled them to consider the implications of this technology on a societal level. When learning about this theme, students also attend the local Magistrate’s Court to observe justice in action and they watch ‘A cry in the Dark’, the film on the Azaria Chamberlain case. Students use these experiences to discuss how our justice system operates and how forensics and the media can impact on it operating effectively to create a just and safe society. HORIZON engages students for a full term in rich and diverse learning experiences. The themes of Community Engagement and the Environment are also explored. For more information, visit our website.
