No end to ‘nasty’ debate By Helen Grimaux

The current and future role of unions in the Australian economy will be the topic of the opening address at next month’s presentation of Northern Business Achievement awards. Guest speaker ‘Ged’ (Geraldine) Kearney, president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, will expound on her belief that unions should not just be concerned with the experience of people at work but should advocate for change to improve all aspects of Australians’ lives. Hosted by Hume and Moreland councils, next month’s breakfast event will present award nominees from both municipalities. The awards focus on small to medium enterprises that have “contributed to the growth of a tradition of excellence in the north”. The breakfast is expected to have at least 200 guests. Among award winners will be Hume businesses Food Plastics and Selectrix Industries and Moreland businesses Expedition Apparel and Crivelli Fine Coffee. Young business achiever awards will go to Dempsey Ross, customer service co-ordinator at Parkroyal Hotel Melbourne Airport, and to Moreland apprentice Brent Schwennesen, of valve-maker EnerMech of Brunswick. The Business Achievement Awards breakfast is on Thursday, September 4, at Rydges Bell City ballroom, Preston. Register at www.nbaa.com.au

Last Monday marked the second anniversary of ambulance officers beginning industrial action against the state government. To mark the milestone, Whittlesea paramedics and their colleagues across Victoria ramped up their Code Red campaign, handing out leaflets at train and bus stations to give their perspective on one of the state’s longest-running pay and conditions stand-offs. “The Code Red campaign is not just about getting a fair wage for paramedics,” Whittlesea organiser Ward Young said. “We also have raised awareness about the failings of the ambulance system in a bid to improve outcomes for Victorians. “We can’t save your life if we get to you too late. Before the Code Red campaign, nobody knew there was a problem.” Mr Young dismissed government accusations of “greediness” and suggestions that paramedics were being manipulated by their union. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” he said. “This government has spent more than $1 million on misleading advertising in an attempt to destroy the trust and public confidence that Victorians have in paramedics. Unfortunately, we don’t have that sort of money to advertise and address the untruths, so we have leaflets at train stations.” Mr Young said paramedics had been forced to defend themselves in the face of government misinformation. “We went to university for three years and did further on-the-job training to save lives, treat people in pain and make a difference,” he said. “We have been thrust into a nasty public debate with a government that has tried to turn the public against its paramedics.”

SPORT NORTHERN.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Five-fight for finals spot By Tara Murray Five teams, three finals places up for grabs … that’s the equation going into the final home-and-away round in division 1 of the Northern Football League on Saturday. Positions three to seven are separated by one game and percentage after the weekend’s matches, with Montmorency, Macleod, West Preston Lakeside, Bundoora and Lower Plenty still in the mix. Reigning premier Bundoora will have to beat Eltham and hope other results go its way. The Bulls are in sixth place, two points behind fifth-placed West Preston Lakeside, which faces third-placed Montmorency. It was a fight for the Bulls at the weekend, but they stayed in the mix with victory over Northcote Park 19.9 (123) to 16.15 (111). It looked like a case of how far for the Bulls in the first half as they kicked out to a 39-point half-time lead. Northcote Park reduced the margin to one point in the third quarter before the Bulls kicked five goals to three in the final term. Star forwards Cameron Cloke (6 goals) and Gary Moorcroft (4) led from the front, while Brendan Carlyon was best on ground. Whittlesea’s fate has officially been sealed and the Eagles are to be relegated after an 8.25 (133) to 12.10 (82) loss against Montmorency on Saturday. Despite the loss, Whittlesea’s Riley Dyson was one of the best on the field with three goals. In division 3, top sides Thomastown and Reservoir had convincing wins in the final round of the season, beating Heidelberg West and South Morang respectively. They will meet in the opening week of the finals, while South Morang will take on Watsonia in the other semi-final.

Season over for Jaguars Jacana fell short in its push for a finals berth, losing to Keilor Park in the last round of division 2 of the Essendon District Football League. Both sides had a lot to play for, with fourth spot up for grabs. Moonee Valley began the day in fourth place, equal on points with both the Jaguars and Devils, but with the difficult task of beating top-of-the-table Roxburgh Park to clinch a finals spot. So both sides knew fourth place was waiting for the winner of the Jacana-Keilor Park clash, and it was the Devils who came out firing with a 25-point lead at quarter-time. The Jaguars bounced back in the second quarter to cut the margin to 13 by the main break. But then it all went wrong for Jacana, as the Devils seized control with six goals to nil in the third quarter. The Jaguars reduced the margin in the final term but it was too little, too late. The Jaguars finished the season in sixth place after spending much of the year in the top four. And with Moonee Valley losing to Roxburgh Park by 24 points, Keilor Park grabbed fourth place. Roxburgh Park kicked five goals in both of the middle quarters to set up a meeting with East Keilor in Saturday’s second semi final. Keilor Park will meet Coburg Districts in the first semi-final. Tara Murray

Cameron Cloke kicked six goals as Bundoora kept its finals hopes alive. (Damian Visentini)
