Support for council ‘youth home’ By Lexi Cottee

Melbourne City Mission is supporting Whittlesea council’s push to build a supported accommodation centre in South Morang that connects vulnerable young people to study and employment opportunities. The council wants to set up a ‘youth foyer’, based on a UK model that provides affordable accommodation for people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. It also links them to training, employment, health, well-being and social participation support. City Mission chief executive Reverend Ric Holland said growing numbers of young people in Whittlesea had been travelling to the charity’s Melbourne base to access its homelessness support services. “Of course we’ll support them and do what we can, but it’s not the most appropriate place for them to be. It should be closer to home,” he said. “There needs to be somewhere on hand in the area for an instant response.” The mission is one of 45 multi-disciplinary agencies that make up the Whittlesea Community Futures Partnership (WCFP), which is seeking state and federal government support to help alleviate local youth homelessness, among other aims. Whittlesea mayor Mary Lalios said the council had been requesting money from state and federal governments for a number of years to set up a local youth foyer, “but none has been forthcoming”. The planned South Morang foyer would include 15 semi-detached units with on-site professional staff to support residents. Young people can stay in the units for up to two years and receive outreach support

for a further year if needed. According to council estimates, the project would require establishment funds of $170,000 and annual funding of $888,000 for three years. But the cost benefit far outweighs the expense as council research shows the

estimated cost of youth homelessness on the health and criminal justice system is $332,300 per person over a lifetime. Rev Holland said Whittlesea needed to fix youth homelessness at its source. “If you can get a 19-year-old who’s on the

way to homelessness and create a new pathway for them, you stop it right there,” he said. “That should happen in their own city.” It’s estimated 38,400 young people will be living in the City of Whittlesea in 10 years’ time.

It’s time to get physical. Olivia Newton-John is calling on residents across the west to throw on the lycra and join her in a Wellness Walk on Sunday, September 28. The walk through the streets of Ivanhoe, finishing with a street party and concert, will raise money for the wellness and supportive care programs provided at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre at the Austin Hospital. The centre is dedicated to providing the very best in medical care, treatment and research to help stop cancer destroying the lives of so many people. It’s a disease Ms Newton-John is all too familiar with. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992; that same weekend, her father died from liver cancer. Her sister died last year from brain cancer. “It’s touched my whole life in many ways,” Ms Newton-John said. “When I went through cancer I was able to participate in wellness programs such as yoga and meditation, and I did herbs and massage – all the things I’ve been able to implement in the wellness centre.” Ms Newton-John said it had been amazing to see the centre come to fruition. She now has big plans for a new Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute at the Austin. “I believe that we’re going to be the team that sees an end to cancer. That’s my dream and we have some wonderful young researchers there with some wonderful ideas.” The Wellness Walk caps off a big month for Ms Newton-John, who hosted the ONJ Gala at Flemington Racecourse and will sing the national anthem at this year’s AFL grand final. Go to www.fundraisingoliviaappeal.com/ event/thewellnesswalk to register for the Wellness Walk.

Growing numbers of women are flocking to Northern Health in Epping to have their babies. The latest statistics show a steady rise in the number of births at Northern, with 3241 in the 2013-14 financial year, a rise of 210 on the previous year and 547 higher than in 2011-12. Northern Health chief executive Janet Compton said she expected 4000 deliveries in the hospital in the current financial year, attributing the rising numbers to the hospital being in one of Australia’s fastest-growing areas. But she said it meant upgrades at the hospital were needed to accommodate newborns and their mothers. “New clinics are being established to

The Langham Melbourne is the perfect antidote for any Melburnian needing a quick break. The Langham, on Southbank, prides itself on offering modern yet timeless elegance. It’s this winning mix that has led me to return countless times for a luxurious overnight stay or indulgent weekend away. This time around we booked the ‘Away with the Fairies’ package, which included overnight accommodation for two, a full buffet dinner at Melba and breakfast the next morning, a late checkout of 2pm, and valet parking. We stayed in a Grand River Room on the 18th floor with a great view of the Yarra River and Flinders Street Station. The room itself is simply furnished with a king-size Langham ‘Blissful’ bed, desk and armchair with Ottoman. But it’s the small touches – from the luxury Chuan Spa amenity products in the bathroom and the copy of Alice in Wonderland in the bedside table drawer to the bottle of water placed in your car at checkout – that impress. The marble bathroom is comfortably set out and includes a separate shower and deep bathtub. If you’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary, be sure to let them know when you book and you will be rewarded with a slice of chocolate cake on arrival and a handwritten note congratulating you on your milestone. When dining at Melba, make sure you come with an appetite. The buffet offers a wide range of food stations with an international cuisine and serves up fresh seafood, cooked-to-order pasta, specially-made naan bread, a delicious array of dumplings, and desserts to die for.

My personal favourites included sushi made to order, naan bread with M&Ms, Peking duck pancakes and churros with a chocolate dipping sauce. To drink, try the apple crumbletini. Back in the room, the bed lives up to its reputation: you just sink into the soft mattress and pillows and drift off into a peaceful night’s sleep. The Langham Melbourne is also home to a swimming pool, fitness centre, and the Aria Bar and Lounge, which is renowned for its Tiffin High Tea.

Panthers romp to title

Sport shorts TAC Cup

Sam Switkowski was a runaway winner in Northern Knights’ best and fairest with 120 votes, 22 clear of Zach Ballard and a further four ahead of Jordan Perry. Jayden Short, who finished fourth, was named most consistent player and Ryan Tester was named best first-year player.

By Tara Murray Greenvale United secured the FFV state league 5 north title in style on Saturday with a 9-0 win over Mitchell Rangers. The Panthers entered the game against bottom-of-the-table Rangers knowing a win would ensure the title and promotion. While the Panthers are only three points clear of Northern United with one match to play, a vastly superior goal difference means ladder positions won’t change whatever the results. Northern United beat Reservoir Yeti 2-0 on Saturday, Mill Park beat Sporting Carlton 2-1 and Keon Park belted Light United 6-1. In state league 2 north west, the battle for top spot will go to the final round with only a point separating North Sunshine Eagles and Corio. In the same division, Hume United’s 2-2 draw against Moreland United moved the club four points clear of relegation and ensured its position for next year. Sporting Whittlesea lost to Westvale 1-0. In state league 3 north west, Lalor United went down 3-1 to Brunswick Zebras, while Whittlesea United lost 1-0 to Altona City. The battle for second spot on the ladder behind Essendon Royals will continue into the final round, with only one point separating Essendon United and Old Carey with Altona City one point further back. Upfield won the state league 4 north title with a 3-2 win over Fawkner, while West Preston, Parkville Panthers and Plenty Valley Lions were also winners. Heidelberg United and Darebin United, and Bundoora United and Northern Falcons shared the points For more photos from the weekend’s action go to www.northern.starweekly.com.au.
