Hume would contribute to the new Sunbury municipality from monies it received for being home to Melbourne’s international airport. Mr Bull inherited the controversial Sunbury-out-of-Hume project from retiring Nationals MP and former minister Jeanette Powell. Cr Nunn said Mrs Powell had promised a “one-off separation cost” rather than the annual $2.47 million payment for the next 10 years that Mr Bull has proposed. She said the panel appointed by the former minister to oversee the separation process had “failed to meet the criteria of its own terms of reference” and had failed to ensure the viability of the new Sunbury municipality. Comments from last week’s forum and the ongoing online survey will be collated and submitted to Mr Bull later this month.
At home in foreign room When women die after a battle with cancer, they often leave a partner behind. He’s then left to cook, clean and maintain a household – often for the first time. It’s an issue Anna Kostakos has come across repeatedly. She’s been leading the Northern Cancer Support Group in Mill Park since 2008 when she lost her own parents to cancer in just three agonising months. So the Mill Park resident decided to offer a six-week cooking course for men. The first course ended last month. “There was a need for them to find their way around the kitchen, cook quick meals and learn how to do the grocery shopping. ” Ms Kostakos had four participants in the course and has just been granted funding from the City of Whittlesea’s community grants program to run another one later this month.

The grant will enable the widowers to buy cooking utensils, plastic take-away containers and a wok. Ms Kostakos also hopes to hire a professional cooking instructor. The first course relied on the cooking skills of Ms Kostakos and three other volunteers, who operated in the community kitchen at Plenty Valley Church. In each session the volunteers taught the men how to shop for, and cook, a healthy meal. And at the end of the class they all sat down to share the meal and have a chat. The Northern Cancer Support Group is looking for volunteers. If you’re interested in offering your time or would like to join in the next cooking course, email Anna on communitycookingclasses4men@ yahoo.com. Lexi Cottee

Two Hume councillors involved in ugly confrontations with Broadmeadows Progress Association members and others at a public forum were summoned to appear before a special council meeting held last night. Cr Jack (Steve) Medcraft allegedly tussled with a BPA supporter over a sign and yelled at a number of people. Cr Jack Ogilvie was accused of intimidating behaviour during the brief confrontation that ensued. Councillors were due to decide on further action after several formal complaints were submitted. More than 350 people attended the forum at Broadmeadows Town Hall to discuss the new city of Sunbury. Residents can submit feedback on the proposed changes via survey forms, with the option of making their views known online. Opening the forum, mayor Casey Nunn said the council had been “inundated” with calls and emails from residents since Local Government Minister Tim Bull announced Sunbury would be separated from Hume last month. “There are significant implications for the people and staff of both Sunbury and Hume,” Cr Nunn said. “Let me make it clear – council Colours: accepts the votePantone to separate, but we believe Blue PMS 281c not be at the the creation of Sunbury should expense of the rest ofRed Hume.” PMS 186c The mayor said she had received further White correspondence from Mr Bull indicating he would be amending the amount of money

Snakes alive, and active Jason Kelly was walking his crossbreed pup Roxy in grassy fields at the back of a housing estate in Doreen when he caught her pointing. He’d never before seen Roxy point, a behaviour common to gun dog breeds whose nose and tail direct their owners to prey, but he soon discovered why. Roxy’s nose was just three centimetres away from a sizeable brown snake that was sunning itself on a rock. “I had to get her out of harm’s way pretty quickly,” Mr Kelly said. “I’m certainly less inclined to let her off the leash in those paddocks now.” Earlier that day, snake catcher Steve McNeil saw two eastern brown snakes in Doreen. The Greensborough resident, who has been a snake catcher for four years, said now was the time for people to brush up on their snake knowledge. He said warmer weather had already started to lure snakes out into the sun. If you see a snake, his advice is to give it a wide berth. “If you can, watch it from a safe distance and call a snake catcher. “These animals don’t need to be feared; they need to be learned about.” Mr McNeil said dogs and cats reacted differently to snake venom. Dogs usually collapsed, then experienced diarrhoea or began vomiting before appearing to recover. Then most began to froth at the mouth, convulse, become paralysed and finally suffer respiratory failure. “Many dogs will not survive even if treated with antivenin, although we have had several large dogs survive with intensive care over the past two years,” he said.
Steve McNeil
Cats, on the other hand, could take days to show signs of snakebite. They began to behave drunkenly, their back legs gave way and then their forearms beceme paralysed. “Many wake up in the morning to find their cat lying on its side and just blinking,

unable to stand up,” Mr McNeil said. “But cats do very well with antivenin treatment, with 90 per cent surviving.” If you see a snake and would like advice or for it to be removed by a professional, call 136 186.

Teens robbed at knifepoint A gang of eight men used flick knives and knuckledusters to rob and assault two teenage boys in Thomastown about 1am on Wednesday. The boys, a 16-year-old from Lalor and 15-year-old from Thomastown, were walking from one’s home to the other’s when two cars pulled up beside them. The teens told police eight people wearing hooded jumpers and facemasks jumped from the cars and demanded valuables. They produced flick knives and knuckledusters and assaulted the teens, who were then tied up and left in the back of a car on a bridge near Johnson Street. An anonymous caller later called emergency services. Leading investigator Detective Senior Constable Daniel Chrystie said the car belonged to a resident from nearby, but detectives had yet to determine whether it had been stolen. “It’s concerning that eight people would take on two young males for apparently no reason,” he said. “Their motive is unclear.” The 15-year-old was taken to Northern Hospital but released immediately. The 16-year-old was admitted for injuries to an eye, his face and the back of his head. Whittlesea detectives are appealing for anyone with information, particularly the anonymous caller. You may cross now Pedestrians can cross McKimmies Road without fearing for their lives, with Whittlesea mayor Mary Lalios having switched on new traffic lights opposite RMIT’s Bundoora campus just over a week ago. Cr Lalios was joined by members of the local soccer academy for the first crossing of McKimmies Road using the new pedestrian-operated traffic lights. The lights, which cost $160,000, are aimed at removing community fears about crossing the road by foot or on bike to get to the university or Mill Park Primary School. They were funded in the council’s new works program. Lexi Cottee

Up close and personal Open Days are an entertaining way to see what a school has to offer, but nothing beats seeing it “in action” on a regular weekday. In an ideal world, families of potential students should do both. Most open days and evenings offer a flurry of activities in a carnival-like atmosphere, with music performances, art displays and even equestrian demonstrations. Campuses buzz with teachers and students conducting tours and promoting extracurricular activities. While open days provide a terrific snapshot of what’s available, visiting during school hours offers a real insight into how it operates day to day. Many schools hold regular tours that allow parents and potential students to see classes in action and ask questions. Catholic Ladies’ College has the best of both worlds. It holds a February Open Twilight Day that showcases the school’s bushland setting and activities, such as an Equestrian Team demonstration. In October, CLC holds an annual VCE Art Exhibition and Open Twilight Day, where families enjoy student art and tour the college with student guides. The school also holds hour-long morning tours twice a term, starting with a short welcome by the principal, Margaret McKenna. Afterwards families enjoy a cup of tea with her or other staff members. “All prospective students and their families should attend at least one open day to observe the college in its daily operation, experience the feel of our community and see the rich breadth of opportunities it has to offer,” McKenna says. Instead of a traditional open day, prospective St Monica’s College students and their families
enjoy morning tea with the school’s principal, Brian Hanley. The informal 90-minute tour of classrooms, grounds and facilities is held throughout the year. The tour finishes with morning tea prepared by the school’s hospitality students, and parents can meet and chat with the principal. “During the tour, parents and children have an opportunity to interact with students and teachers at work in the classroom and ask questions,” Hanley says. St Monica’s also has an information evening for primary school families in September. At the Academy of Mary Immaculate, each tour that prospective students and their families take is different. Talk & Tour mornings are held every three weeks and incorporate day-to-day activities. They also take in the new three-storey science building. Principal Sr Mary Moloney says the format is more natural than a big open day. She heads the tours, which showcase school facilities, visit year 7 classes and chat to students they meet along the way. They might discuss friendship, starting high school or public transport. This reassures potential students that, even if they are nervous, they can deal with the transition. Those entering other year levels also hear about issues such as subject selection. “There’s nothing contrived,” Sr Moloney says. “They see the college as it is on any given day. Wherever we go, when we come across students they are invited to talk to parents – they’re great ambassadors.” Families should book tours via www.clc.vic. edu.au, www.stmonicas-epping.com or www. academy.vic.edu.au.

Where to sign up Finding the right school for your child can be a challenge against students literally groomed from birth. “You need to be confident that your kid is right up there with those kids,” he says. Independent Schools Victoria chief executive Michelle Green says parents have a better chance of gaining a place in the junior years, because year 7 is more popular. “Registering an interest at more than one school is a good idea, but usually the administration fee will not be refunded,” she says. Independent Schools Victoria surveyed 55,000 parents and the top reasons they chose a school were that it suited their child’s needs, had a good reputation and developed sound morals, values, beliefs and attitudes. “They were not necessarily looking for the ‘best’ school but rather the school that could best meet the needs of their son or daughter,” Green says. Things to consider include a child’s character, personality, interests and aspirations, the subjects taught and how, whether a school is co-educational, its sports program, the arts and co-curricular activities; location and public transport are also important. “As in many ‘purchasing’ decisions, word of mouth is important. Parents should talk to other parents with children at the school about the programs offered and examine schools’ websites,” Green says. Scholarships are worth investigating, she adds, but parents need to consider how the child will cope with the pressure of meeting parental and school expectations. “Perhaps it might be better to wait to see how he or she is performing and, if genuinely talented, make a decision then.”

Gaining entry into Melbourne’s top independent schools can be difficult, especially if your child is a boy. However, planning ahead and being realistic about your child’s abilities and interests can help. Of Melbourne’s 50 most expensive private schools, only seven are boys’ schools, according to Regent Consulting’s Paul O’Shannassy. The rest are co-educational or girls-only. For that reason, O’Shannassy says parents can find it harder to get their sons into top single-sex schools. “If you’ve got boys it’s a much tougher market,” he says. Regardless of gender, O’Shannassy advises parents to register their child at three to four good schools soon after birth. “In some cases if you haven’t got them down in the first three to six months you’re in a lot of trouble,” he says. Parents can also increase their chances by enrolling in a school’s Early Learning Centre and continuing into primary and then high school. O’Shannassy believes the ideal time to enter an independent school is grade 5. This gives families time to develop community links through their local primary school before settling into the new school in time for year 7. When choosing a school, regardless of its prestige, a school must “fit” the student. Do the school’s programs fit your philosophies and beliefs? Does its focus on sport, the arts or academic excellence suit your child’s interests and abilities? Does its size fit their personality? O’Shannassy says parents should also be realistic when deciding whether to seek a scholarship because they will be competing

Big stand rescues Bats By Tara Murray A partnership of 186 between Brad Mitchell and Lorenzo Ingram took Plenty Valley from the edge of disaster to a position of strength on Saturday’s opening day of Sub-District cricket. Mitchell joined Ingram with the Bats at 4-54 against Yarraville. But Mitchell’s 99 and Ingram’s 94 carried Plenty Valley to a comfortable 8-275 from the 80 overs and ensured Yarraville will have a difficult target on day two of the match this Saturday. Matthew Love, who ended the partnership when he had Ingram caught, was the best of the Yarraville bowlers with 4-71. Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows will need its own batting heroics to take any points from the opening-round clash against Brunswick. Despite bolstering its batting ranks in the off-season, it was a case of ‘same old story’ for the Falcons. Brunswick won the toss and batted and was left to rue that decision as the innings slumped to 7-62. But four of the five lower batsmen for Brunswick reached double figures which carried the total to 108. Bryce Preston was the best of the bowlers with four wickets. But, like Brunswick, the Falcons’ top order also failed to fire. The top five all failed to hit double figures as the Falcons fell to 5-35. Kurtley Brandt, who made 15 not out and captain Mitch Johnstone, who reached 10, steadied the ship to take the Falcons to 6-65 by stumps. Round one of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association was called off because not enough grounds were ready.

Premiers start with easy win Last season’s premiers, Rivergum, don’t see any extra pressure on them this year in the North Metro Cricket Association’s Jika Shield competition. If anything, president Andrew Hopgood feels there’s less pressure. “Last year was the breakthrough win [to get a first Jika premiership] after losing the grand final in the two seasons before that,” he said. “It has relieved the pressure a bit knowing we can take the last step.” Hopgood said the players enjoyed the premiership win but were now focused on this season. “We lost Scott Morley, who retired, and picked up Sean Kirby; otherwise we have a similar side to last year.” Hopgood said he was expecting big things from some of his younger players. “We had two younger guys play on Saturday [Kasey May and Luke Borg], but they didn’t get a bat,” he said. Rivergum’s season got off to the right start with wins to its top three teams. The first XI didn’t waste any time against Lalor Warriors, who won the toss and elected to bat. Rivergum dried up the runs with tight bowling and bowled out the Warriors for 90. Kyl Ewart got three wickets, while Daniel Bramich, Sean Kirby and Daniel Young got two each. Rivergum reached the target in the 19th over with only three wickets down. Tara Murray
