Greenvale’s Boris Struk remembers taking his son Ryan, then three, to a doctor and being told his boy was unlikely to live past his teenage years. That was 30 years ago. Ryan had been diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a muscle-destroying disorder that affects about one in 1000 people worldwide. “There was no information provided to me, only a two-line paragraph describing the disorder from an outdated medical book,” Mr Struk said. To quote a line from Ghostbusters, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”, and that’s just what he did. Ryan is now 34 and Mr Struk snr is both the founder and executive director of Muscular Dystrophy Australia (MDA). The elder Mr Struk is one of four finalists for
next year’s Victorian senior of the year award. The winner will be named on October 28 and be considered for the national awards to be announced in Canberra on January 25. Since its incorporation in 1984, MDA has provided more than 500,000 hours of respite for families affected by MD and about 150,000 hours of helping tertiary students undertake work experience. The charity has also raised more than $43 million for support services and research. Its ChallengeMD! fundraiser brings groups of MD supporters together to complete national and international challenges such as cycling in Vietnam or trekking in Nepal. For more details about MDA, visit www.mda.org.au. Helen Grimaux
Hume detectives have interviewed a man following an attempted armed robbery in Gladstone Park last Wednesday. Witnesses told investigators a man entered a bank about 1.30pm before demanding cash. After being stopped by bank staff, he tried to use a nearby resident’s car to escape. When the car’s owner refused to hand over her keys, the man pulled a driver out of another nearby vehicle and drove towards the city. He was intercepted less than half an hour later.
Council survey for park plans
Whittlesea council plans to redevelop Lalor’s Lorne Park. Changes will include an updated children’s playground, concrete walking circuit, shelter and seating, and a new half-size basketball court. The council wants community feedback during the design phase. To complete a survey, visit goo.gl/x4svLp.
Funding for community projects
Bio pharmaceutical company CSL Behring is offering $20,000 to support a community project. An information session for applicants will be held at CSL’s Broadmeadows base at 189-209 Camp Road this Thursday from 3pm. Applications open October 20 and close on November 28. The successful project will be announced next February. For more details and application guidelines, visit www. cslbehring.com.au/grant. Hume council deputy mayor Adem Atmaca was appointed to the company’s grants selection committee earlier this month.

An Epping-based playgroup for young mums and dads has taken out a “playgroup of the month award. The Whittlesea council-run group has been named Playgroup Victoria’s October ‘Playgroup of the Month’ for providing a supportive environment for young parents. The council’s Young Parents Playgroup, as it’s known, started up about seven years ago to help new mums in their teens or early 20s develop friendships with mothers their own age, and to help those eager to get back into work or study. Co-facilitator and youth development officer Kristy Jaycock says most of the activities are organised by the mothers themselves. “We empower the young parents to run the group themselves by being involved in the decision-making, Ms Jaycock said. “They
decide what they want to do with the playgroup and how money should be spent. They choose what equipment, excursions and outside agencies are brought in – but the friendships formed are one of the most positive outcomes. Mill Park resident and mother of six-month-old Amiity-Jade, Chloe Meldrum, joined the playgroup six weeks ago and said it had changed her from a “hermit crab to a socialite. “I didn’t know many young mums in Melbourne, but now I go out to lunch with the other mums in the group all the time, she said. Ms Meldrum said the experience was a contrast to her first playgroup, where she struggled to relate to the other mothers who were in their late 20s and early 30s. Lexi Cottee

psychological distress in adolescents than the rest of northern metropolitan Melbourne. “Yet there are no local services available,” said Cr Lalios. “Young people in need have to travel to Glenroy to access Headspace’s services – in an area that’s inaccessible by public transport.” WCFP is calling for the establishment of a Headspace in Whittlesea and a service hub with clinical and non-clinical mental health services and practitioners collaborating in a partnership program. “With the City of Whittlesea experiencing rapid population growth now and in the future, addressing this issue as soon as possible will help contain projected increases in demand,” Cr Lalios said.
There are three simple things community members can do to tell the government and opposition parties that people want a fairer deal: ■ Sign the Fairer Funding petition at www.fairerfunding. com.au ■ On the Fairer Funding Facebook page, share stories in video and photos about how a lack of services impacts on you. ■ Check the Families on the Edge campaign’s progress on Twitter by following @ fairerfunding.

A South Morang-based clinical psychologist has backed a council-led push for more co-ordinated mental health services in the City of Whittlesea. Dr Ben Buchanan, a clinical psychologist at the Plenty Valley Community Health-based Victorian Counselling and Psychological Services, said good mental health services weren’t available for people at the severe end of the mental health spectrum. “You can access mental health services quite readily by visiting your GP and requesting a referral, but for people who are severely unwell, more engagement is needed,” Dr Buchanan said. “We need a dedicated mental health facility that has the capacity to engage with people who don’t want to be engaged with.” Huge parts of the council were without established neighbourhoods and social networks and this correlated to disengagement and mental health problems among youths, he said. Dr Buchanan deals with depression and anxiety sufferers between the ages of 13 and 25 on a daily basis and says that while he co-ordinates his patients’ care with their doctors, “the collaboration stops there”. “We need to be able to co-ordinate a step up or step down approach to their care.” In the lead-up to the state election, the Whittlesea Community Futures Partnership, which is made up of 45 multi-disciplinary agencies, including the council, is seeking $550,000 in state government funding to establish “desperately needed” youth mental health services in the City of Whittlesea. Whittlesea mayor Mary Lalios said the municipality had higher reported levels of

Once an enclave that accommodated Holmes a Court’s Heyesburgh Horse Stud, Hidden Valley is the rural setting for this sprawling family house with a mixture of elegant and spread-out-in-comfort rooms affording each family member space to enjoy. of them walk-ins. A bathroom and powder room share the wing. The main bedroom at the front has a large walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with spa and period-style vanity unit with twin basins. There’s also a tucked-away study which could serve as a sixth bedroom. A refined mural in the Italianate style marks the end of the tiled entry hall which
is flanked by open lounge and dining rooms (with feature fireplace) for more formal occasions. A large, tiled family hub wraps around the kitchen where blackwood cabinetry, a curved island bench and stainless-steel appliances make it a pleasing heart of the home. A games room (big enough for a full-sized billiard table) has vibrant

red-painted walls and a timber bar; roman blinds here (and in other rooms) are quality inclusions. Most rooms have french doors to outdoor spaces, including two paved areas to sit and soak up the serenity found on the treed land of about 1.21 hectares. Other keynotes are high ceilings, a double garage and a third garage or storeroom.

Clokes sign for Eagles By Tara Murray Former AFL players Jason and Cameron Cloke will play for Craigieburn in division 1 of the Essendon District Football League next season. Jason has spent the past four years playing with Spotswood in the Western Region Football League and was part of the team which won the 2011 division 1 premiership. Younger brother Cameron has been with Bundoora in the Northern Football League over the same period. He was part of two division 1 premiership-winning sides with the Bulls and won the 2013 Frank Rosbrook Trophy as the league’s best player. Eagles president Brian Hall said the announcement had already created excitement at the club. “We identified that to improve as a team we needed key forwards up forward and we worked hard to get these players to fill this gap,” he said. “There’s the incentive for Cameron and Jason to play together again. “But I think they saw the direction the club is going in, from being a struggling club to a strong club again.” Hall said the signings would also benefit the younger players. Craigieburn club survived relegation to division 2 only by percentage in 2014, finishing just 4.5 per cent ahead of Hadfield. “We started to come together as a team in the last half of the year,” Hall said. “We found we needed a couple of targets to add to that. “We have a young side and they’ll be the future of our club, so having experienced players will help the players develop.” The Eagles will start their preseason on November 17.

Jacana has appointed Aaron Collins as coach for next season. Jaguars president Rick Lloyd said that while Collins didn’t necessarily have the same coaching credentials as other applicants he understood the club and its values. “He was an assistant coach with us last season under Matt [Sacco] and he has been assistant coach at Westmeadows and North Footscray. He brings with him a panel of coaches who have all played in premierships,” Lloyd said. “We were looking for someone with a good team of people behind them and he brings a good mix of people and will help build on the work Matt has done the last two years.”
