Quit tag pinned to shisha

Real estate still riding high

By Lexi Cottee

Craigieburn’s property boom continues unabated, the latest RP Data statistics reveal. The property data and analytics company’s figures show 634 houses were sold in Craigieburn in the 2013-14 financial year, up by 22 houses on the previous year, with the median house value of $352,621 representing a 2 per cent growth in the past 12 months. House prices in Attwood have risen by almost nine per cent in the past financial year, to $496,452, with 38 properties changing hands in the year to June 30. Broadmeadows, Coolaroo and Jacana had similar growth of about 7 per cent, with median house values at $333,172, 288,524 and 329,919 respectively. In Whittlesea, Lalor houses ‘performed’ well, with 237 sold, knocking up that suburb’s housing price by 6.4 per cent. South Morang remains one of the city’s most expensive suburbs, with a median house value of $444,828. Compared to the rest of the state, neither Hume nor Whittlesea property markets were among the weakest or strongest in terms of growth. RP Data spokesman Robert Larocca said home buyers looking to purchase something in Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs had the medium-to-long-term view of the market in mind. “The outer suburbs are a very different market. Buyers … have the choice of a new home or an established one,” he said.

(Justin McManus/The Age)

Shisha lounges, where smokers inhale from waterpipes, are in the sights of anti- smoking campaigners after a state Health Department survey showed about 20 per cent of adults living in Hume and Whittlesea were cigarette smokers. According to the Victorian Population Health Survey 2011-12, 21.9 per cent of adults in Whittlesea and 19.2 per cent of adults in Hume call themselves smokers. The state average is 15.7 per cent. Northern Melbourne Medicare Local (NMML) chief executive Geoff Lavender said smoking rates were particularly high in ethnic communities. He said a recently launched NMML ‘‘stop smoking’’ campaign called ‘‘quit help’’ would target users of shisha (waterpipes). Quit Victoria, the Heart Foundation and the Australian-Lebanese Medical Association are also campaigning to address a loophole in the Tobacco Act 1987 that allows shisha to be smoked indoors. Australian Association of Smoking Cessation Professionals vice-president Colin Mendelsohn said shisha smoking could be more dangerous to a person’s health than smoking cigarettes. “In a typical one-hour session a waterpipe smoker may inhale as much smoke as a cigarette smoker may inhale from 100 cigarettes or more,” Dr Mendelsohn said. Mr Lavender said NMML’s campaign was encouraging smokers to consult their doctor to help them quit the habit rather than go “cold turkey”. “The success rate for quitting unsupported is three to five per cent, compared with a 20-25 per cent success rate when supported by a health professional.”

Assault captured on CCTV

Two teenagers who police allege attacked a security guard at the Hume Global Learning Village on October 23 have been arrested and charged. Detectives from the Hume crime investigation unit last week charged the 13-year-olds with intentionally causing injury. They were bailed to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on December 16 on condition they avoid the Hume Global Learning Centre. Police say CCTV cameras captured two boys assaulting the security guard, pulling him to the ground and punching and stomping on his head.

Phillip Papagiannopoulos discovered his religious “calling” early in his life. The 18-year-old is now sitting VCE exams at Thomastown Secondary College and hopes to be accepted to St Andrews Theological College in Sydney next year. His acceptance would cap off years of involvement with his local parish, hours spent organising fundraisers for the Cancer Council and local charities, and visits to hospitals and aged-care homes. Last month, the year 12 student, along with Plenty Parklands Primary School pupil Cassidy Janevski, was granted Whittlesea council’s mayoral award. The award is the most significant of the council’s annual student recognition awards, which are made to students who have

demonstrated initiative or leadership at school or in the broader community. Phillip and Cassidy were chosen for their charity and volunteer work, and exemplary student records. Both received $350 to help pay for their studies. Phillip took up Greek dancing about three years ago and has started his own dancing group. Although just three of the group’s nine members have Greek ancestry, Phillip says the students are equally enthusiastic. He said he was surprised when told of his award. “I was very surprised to get it. I just consider this day-to-day life.”

Bungalow fire ‘suspicious’

A suspicious fire at 62 Woodburn Crescent, Meadow Heights, is being investigated. Metropolitan Fire Brigade was called to the fire in a bungalow at the rear of the property about 9pm on October 28. Circumstances around the fire have been deemed suspicious. Hume CIU detectives are calling for anyone with information that could help police to contact them on 9302 8211 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Gold ring handed in

What appears to be a gold wedding ring was handed into Broadmeadows police station last Thursday. The ring was found on July 21 on a nature strip on Greenvale Road, Greenvale. Police are asking anyone claiming to own, or know the owner of, the ring to contact the property officer at Broadmeadows police station on 9302 8222.

Lalor heritage move slated By Lexi Cottee A planning expert has described as “strange” and “a missed opportunity”, a decision by Whittlesea council to give heritage protection to just two properties in the Peter Lalor estate. Councillors last week voted to follow the directive of their own strategic planner to introduce a heritage overlay to two properties at 16 Gratwick Street and 18 Middleton Street, Lalor. The decision concludes the council’s push, begun in June 2012, to apply a heritage overlay (amendment C157) to the most intact and significant houses in the Peter Lalor housing co-operative precinct. Community concern initially forced the council to abandon its C157 amendment and seek community support for individual heritage overlays. RMIT planning professor Michael Buxton is a leading expert in peri-urban growth (the area between the suburbs and countryside) and has more than a decade’s experience in government as a planning manager. Told of the council’s decision to isolate just two houses for preservation, based on community feedback, he was shocked. “If the estate is relatively intact and it reflects an historic set of values, it seems strange that the council wouldn’t apply the overlay to the entire estate,” he said. “It’s either all in or none in. “The attitudes of the owners should not be

the primary consideration – if it’s of heritage value, it should be prioritised.” The historical significance of the estate is its connection to the Peter Lalor Housing Co-operative Society, which was formed by ex-servicemen who built low-cost homes for themselves, using designs by renowned town planner Saxil Tuxen, during a housing shortage in the late 1940s and early ’50s.

‘‘

Attitudes of the owners should not be the primary consideration - Michael Buxton

’’

Whittlesea council commissioned two studies into the estate’s significance, and both advocated for the site to be protected. Annie MacKenzie’s husband was part of Peter Lalor’s home building co-operative and the couple built their house from scratch with the help of five other returned soldiers in the late 1940s. Ms MacKenzie put her hand up to have a heritage overlay on her house in Middleton Street “so that people can’t pull it down and put mansions or dog boxes on it”. The 90-year-old is the last of the estate’s original residents and remembers living in Lalor when you could walk to Reservoir and not pass a single house.

hittlesea cycling ambassador Shannon Johnson moved from motorcycle racing to road cycling in 2011. Johnson cycles up to 500 kilometres a week around Whittlesea.

Where is your favourite place to spend a weekend afternoon? To be honest, most of my weekends are spent either racing or training on my bike, but I do enjoy jumping on the bike with my wife and kids and riding to the local playground in the Hillcroft Estate (off Red Oaks Way, South Morang, next to Plenty Road) and kicking the footy and spending time as a family. We’re pretty spoilt with playground locations in our area – we have a few options to choose from. Where do you ride your bike? The thing I enjoy most about riding in the Whittlesea area is that I can ride anywhere

What do you like about living in Whittlesea? I’ve spent the best part of 30 years living in the area. I have so many fond memories of growing up here and I’m glad my children Ryan, 8, and Emily, 6, will be able to experience similar. Cricket kids blast away By Tara Murray Westmeadows Primary School took out the boys’ and girls’ titles in the Gladstone Park Sports District annual MILO T20 Blast School Cup on Friday. The cup involved 33 teams from Westmeadows, Gladstone Park, Gladstone Views, Meadows, Dallas Brooks Community, Coolaroo South and Campbellfield Heights primary schools, Aitken College and Broadmeadows Valley. Each team played at least four games over one day at Jacana Reserve. Cricket Australia’s Wayne Schultz, who ran the event with Cricket Victoria’s Dan Trevillian, said the day was about trying to generate excitement and get children involved in cricket. “The matches were played on smaller grass fields with smaller boundaries to inspire countless fours and sixes,” Schultz said. “With music playing and 16 games taking place at the same time, it created an action-packed, fun atmosphere where every student was involved.” Westmeadows boys’ and girls’ teams, who beat Aitken College and Dallas Brooks Community schools in the finals, will now represent the district at the regional MILO T20 Blast School Cup carnival in Epping this month. Schultz said schools were a very important channel for introducing young people to cricket. “Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia hope the next step for MILO T20 Blast School Cup participants is to register for the full 12-week program,” Schultz said. “Westmeadows Cricket Club hopes to start up a girls’ cricket team [with players] from today’s carnival.”
