Vet nursing by degree
Arson a blight on Hume
In an Australian first, Melbourne Polytechnic’s Epping campus will offer an associate degree of veterinary nursing from next year. Melbourne Polytechnic, formally known as the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE, will offer 40 undergraduate students an opportunity to study in purpose-built facilities for an associate degree. The two-year course has been developed over three years by a team led by veterinarian Meg Dietze, who was previously a lecturer in Melbourne Polytechnic’s bachelor of equine studies. Currently, veterinary nursing students complete a certificate IV. Dr Dietze said Britain started offering veterinary nursing degrees 14 years ago. “We’re excited to be the first to offer an associate degree course specifically designed for veterinary nursing in Australia,” Dr Dietze said. “Vet nurses often act as the radiographer, in-house pathologist and anaesthetist, among other roles. “To cater to the level of sophistication clients require for their pets, vet practices need staff with high skill levels and a deep understanding of the role.” Dr Dietze said the course would be academically challenging but a lot of fun. Melbourne Polytechnic has struck an agreement with the Lort Smith Animal Hospital that will allow students to complete clinical placements at the North Melbourne hospital throughout the course. Dr Dietze said she had already been flooded with applications. For more information about the degree, contact vetnursingdegree@nmit.edu.au.

Hume is one of the state’s top 10 high-risk regions for bushfire arson, according to police. Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Jack Blayney, in Melton last week to launch this year’s Operation Firesetter, said police responded to 62 cases of intentionally lit fires last fire season – up by 19 on the previous year. Operation Firesetter is a bushfire arson prevention and detection operation that focuses on high-risk and arson-prone areas. Hume, Yarra Ranges, Shepparton, Cardinia, Moorabool, Geelong, Campaspe, Ballarat, Bendigo and Latrobe have been singled out as ‘high risk’. Statewide, there were 10 fewer bushfires caused by reckless behaviour last summer than in 2012-13, with 21 cases between November 2013 and April 2014. “It’s clear people are taking more care when it comes to fire prevention, but we can’t become complacent,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Blayney said. “Fires can easily ignite from any number of activities, like flicking a cigarette butt, failing to properly extinguish a campfire or using tools such as angle grinders.” The penalty for recklessly or intentionally causing a bushfire is up to 15 years’ jail. For arson resulting in death, the maximum penalty is 25 years’ imprisonment and a fine of more than $35,000. Call triple-0 to report suspicious behaviour or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Woman dies in house fire
An elderly woman died after fire tore through a house in Meadow Heights on Friday. Fire crews from the MFB and CFA were called to the Nicholson Drive address just after 4pm. It is believed the woman had five children, none of whom were home at the time. Firefighters managed to save her pet dog. Police established a crime scene at the house to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Liberal candidate sacked
The Liberal Party has disendorsed Nitin Gursahani as a candidate for the seat of Thomastown. Mr Gursahani was sacked after it was revealed his family business, Kiren Australia, was involved in bringing Bollywood actress and adult film star Sunny Leone to Australia to co-host an event at a Toorak bar. A Liberal party spokesman said this “did not reflect the values that underpin our party” and Mr Gursahani had not been forthcoming about his business interests in the application process.

Ring road racing
College team has ride stuff Gruelling training sessions have become the norm for a group of Whittlesea Secondary College students who will compete in the Great Victorian Bike Ride next month. The cyclists (from left) Ryan Johnson, Gabbie Mathison, Cade Walters, Edward O’Hara, teacher Madeleine Prior, Ayden Bellman, Bailey Dennehy, and Kassandra Mathison, along with two parents and two staff members, will ride 500 kilometres from Albury to Lilydale in the first week of December. The students’ training regime began six months ago. In the meantime, they have been encouraging Whittlesea residents to support their challenge. The Lions Club of Whittlesea has been particularly generous, sponsoring the team and buying riding jerseys for each member. Lexi Cottee
Police are appealing for witnesses after reports two cars were racing east along the western ring road near Edgars Road, Thomastown, just after 7.30 on Thursday night. One of the cars was a 2010 VE Holden Commodore; the other was a green 2005 Holden Commodore. Police were called to the scene, but the alleged incident had ended. They spoke to a 21-year-old South Morang man and a 19-year-old Essendon man.

Annie (‘Peg’) MacKenzie doesn’t have any cartilage left between two of her vertebrae, so day-to-day tasks can be arduous. But the 90-year-old Lalor resident has plenty of fight when it comes to saving the red brick house her late husband George and a team of five other war veterans built in the late 1940s. Mrs MacKenzie, known in the neighbourhood as Peg, is one of the last original residents of houses built by the Peter Lalor Home Building Co-operative Society. The co-operative was established in 1947 amid a severe housing shortage in Melbourne. Its aim was to develop a model suburb for returned soldiers and their families, using government-backed loans. George MacKenzie was a corporal in the 2/24th Battalion, which sailed for the Middle East in 1940. He later became a prisoner of war before finally returning home in the mid-1940s. Peg met Scottish-born George through her brother, who was also a soldier. “He was a marvellous man,” Peg says of her husband. Before their house was built, the couple lived in different quarters within the Lalor Stockade compound with their daughter, Pam, who was just a toddler at the time. In those early days, George ran a hardware store, later taking over as the stockade’s caretaker. In a bitter twist of fate, he died in 1967, the day before Pam married. Peg has lived on her own ever since, and continues to maintain her garden and the house as best she can in her husband’s honour.
Solutions to your dentures problems Annie ‘Peg’ MacKenzie at her Lalor home. (Joe Mastroianni)
She recently requested that Whittlesea council give her property a heritage overlay to protect it from developers. And she is just as keen to protect the surrounding houses. “The men who built these houses had seen a
lot – they weren’t healthy men,” she said. Peg said the society was created with the motto: “A step towards a new way of life dedicated by men who returned, to those who died to make a better world.”

Adventure, respite hand in hand Dianne Vogele’s son, Christian, learned how to snowboard this winter. He also spent a night at Werribee Open Range Zoo, went for a ride in a hot-air balloon and spent a weekend on the Murray River in Echuca. They were just a few of the exciting trips Whittlesea YMCA organised for 16-year-old Christian and about 19 other teenagers during school holidays. While Christian was off exploring, Dianne was able to spend time with her husband and two eldest sons, and take a break from her role as Christian’s primary carer. Christian has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, intellectual disabilities and is on the autism spectrum. He attends Concord School in Bundoora for students with additional learning needs, and joins other teenagers with disabilities on weekend trips and school holiday programs organised by the Whittlesea YMCA. But he doesn’t always get in. “He missed out once because there were too many wanting to go,” Dianne said. “And it will only get worse as more hear how brilliant the program is.” Whittlesea YMCA disability services co-ordinator Annette Jurisch said that because respite services were few and far between in Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs, many of the Whittlesea programs had waiting lists. The YMCA’s disability service is jointly funded by local, state and federal governments. “But we’re always looking for more funding to expand our programs,” Ms Jurisch said. The Whittlesea YMCA is a signatory to the Whittlesea Community Futures campaign,

As part of its 40th anniversary, Broadmeadows shopping centre invited customers to trawl through their old photos and submit their favourites for a good old-fashioned photo competition. Last week, the judges voted Craigieburn resident Josie Mitzi’s photo (pictured) as the winner. Ms Mitzi’s print was given to her by her mother-in-law. The image is of her husband, Chris, straddling a tricycle as a three-year-old in front of his then Broadmeadows home. “It’s a very innocent photo of him – he’s changed a lot since then,” Ms Mitzi said with a laugh. “It’s a treasured memory his mother had of him in the days when times were simpler and you could let your children play in the street.” Lexi Cottee

Suite dreams are made of this By Charlene Macaulay Scoring an upgrade to the presidential suite of a luxury hotel is the stuff travellers’ dreams are made of. That dream became a reality recently when I checked in to the Park Hyatt Melbourne for a girls’ night to find we had been upgraded from a club deluxe room to the presidential suite. From the moment we opened the 17th-floor door, it was clear we’d hit the jackpot. There are not enough words to describe how large and lavish everything in the 240-square-metre suite is. Starting out in the circular entrance hall, we were greeted by a large open-plan lounge and dining room complete with fireplace, baby grand piano and stunning views of St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Fitzroy Gardens. From there, double doors lead to a study and library and follow through to the master bedroom, with two king-size beds, a fireplace, TV and his-and-hers chaise lounges. The massive marble bathroom was my favourite, with a gargantuan jetted spa with built-in TV; extra-large shower with a standard showerhead, hand-held showerhead and jets set into the walls – you know, just in case you missed a spot. The bathroom also sported his-and-hers vanities stocked with luxurious Aesop amenities – and an exercise bike. This lead into a walk-in wardrobe and dressing room larger than some hotel rooms, which then lead to a kitchenette. The whole suite features rosewood and silk walls, plus original paintings. As part of our package, we had access to the Park Lounge on the 19th floor, which offered two hours of evening drinks and canapes, and a continental breakfast the

next morning. The Park Lounge is available to guests staying in Park Hyatt suites, or those who have paid that bit extra for club privileges – and it is definitely worth the extra money. Enjoying even more stunning views of Melbourne, we washed down our canapes with champagne and questioned hotel staff about celebrities who had also stayed in the presidential suite – unfortunately, discretion
is key at the Park Hyatt and our lovely waiters would not give any names. However, a quick Google search revealed we were in the same company as the Rolling Stones, George Bush senior, Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman. After our evening drinks, we headed back down to the 17th floor to make the most of our suite, trying out the piano and spa before retiring to the very comfortable beds to watch a movie. My only complaint is that
we only had a night to indulge in our lucky upgrade. The Park Hyatt Melbourne, located on Parliament Square, is tucked away behind Parliament House and offers that rare mix of being secluded and yet within walking distance of restaurants, shops and everything else Melbourne’s CBD has to offer. The hotel also features a 23-metre indoor swimming pool and spa, fitness centre, The Lounge, and Radii restaurant and bar.

Cannons to make a bang in draft By Tara Murray
Players to watch ...
Calder Cannons could have up to 10 players making their way on to AFL lists in the coming weeks. After not having anyone drafted last season, several Cannons are expected to be selected in Thursday’s AFL draft and then at the rookie draft on December 3. It’s possible the Cannons could have three players go in the top 10 of the draft for the second time in three years. In 2012, Jonathon O’Rourke, Lachie Plowman and Joe Daniher were taken in the top 10. Cannons region manager Ian Kyte said the signs looked promising and that nine or 10 players could be picked up in the coming weeks. He said Peter Wright, Paul Ahern and Jake Lever were all possible top-10 draft picks and most clubs had been speaking to them. “A few have shied away from Pete with the talk of him being a high draft pick,” he said. “Now there’s talk of him sliding in the draft order, some clubs are getting really interested in him. “Matthew Goodyear, Touk Miller and Damian Cavka are others who are high in the mix to be drafted.” Kyte said big men David Kovasevic, Reilly O’Brien and Jayden Foster were among others that could be drafted. “While the Bulldogs didn’t take Jayden as a father-son pick and are looking at putting him on the rookie list, he could go late in the draft,” Kyte said. “There’s been a lot of interest in Kovasevic and if he doesn’t get drafted we’ll look at having him as a 19-year-old on our list next year. “Reilly is the other one. His last six weeks of the season as a key defender were really consistent.” Two names which weren’t mentioned during the season but are being spoken now are Roarke Smith and Patrick McKenna. Former Cannons coach Andrew Jago said Smith was the one player he was asked about outside the bigger-name players. “He is a chance in the rookie draft,” Kyte said. As for McKenna, it’s a decision whether clubs are prepared to take a risk on him this year. Until recently he had been focusing on his cricket and captained the Australian under-19 cricket team on a tour of Sri Lanka. “Pat has decided he wants to go with football now,” Kyte said. “He needs time to improve and AFL clubs will need to decide if they can take the risk or wait another year, when he has more football under his belt. “If he isn’t drafted he will play will us.” Calder Cannons’ Paul Ahern looks likely to realise his AFL dream.
Peter Wright Moonee Valley/Calder Cannons Once touted as a number one draft pick, Wright is now more likely to go middle-late first round. He can play ruck or forward and there’s debate over his best position. On his day can take control of a match and put it out of reach of other teams. Damian Cavka Keilor/Cannons Was the Cannons’ best player in the finals until an injury saw him miss the TAC Cup final. His run and carry and goal sense should have him picked up within the first two rounds. Touk Miller Maribyrnong Park/Cannons A leader and someone who can find the ball, it’s a little unclear where Miller will go in the draft. At 178cm, he’s on the short side, but Miller plays above his height and gets plenty of the ball, with an average 22 disposals in the TAC Cup. Paul Ahern Keilor/Cannons Ahern’s class and skill should see him go early in the draft. A little inconsistent across the TAC Cup season, but he keeps his best for the big games. Starred in the national carnival and was close to the Cannons’ best in their grand final loss. Jake Lever Romsey/Cannons Possibly the best tall defender in the draft. Missed the whole 2014 TAC Cup season with a knee injury, but still a top-five prospect. Reece McKenzie Marcellin College/Northern Knights A power forward who’s quick off the mark, McKenzie can kick big bags of goals. His marking is a feature of his game and he was the best contested mark of the TAC Cup.
(Shawn Smits)
Eight Knights in line for AFL selection Several Northern Knights players are on the radar ahead of this week’s AFL draft. The Knights, who finished 10th with six wins in the TAC Cup, had eight players test at the national and state combine screenings in October. Talent manager Peter Kennedy said those eight players and Zach Ballard were the ones he expected to be in contention for a spot on an AFL senior or rookie list. Kennedy said not many players from outside those tested at the combine normally got selected. The club’s likely picks, he said, would be Kyle Langford, Reece McKenzie and Jason Castagna. “Kyle can play both ends, and he tested really well at the draft combine. “He’s an athletic player who captained Ivanhoe Grammar and played for Vic Metro, and he’s kicked two bags of five goals for the Knights. 22 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 25, 2014
“I expect he’ll go late first round or early second round,” Kennedy said. “Reece is a power forward. He’s remarkably quick over 20 metres and was in the top two per cent at the draft testing. “He was the best contested mark and kicked a bag of 10 for the Knights and 16 in school footy. “Jason is a medium defender with speed and endurance. He ran a 15.3 beep test.” Others Kennedy believes are in the mix are Jayden Short, Ryan Tester, Bailey Jordan, Sam Switkowski and Garrett McDonagh. “Jayden had the best kicking efficiency in the TAC Cup,” he said. “He’s a bit of a late bolter after missing all the practice matches, which also meant he wasn’t selected for Vic Metro. “Ryan is in his first year of football. He played mainly as a key defender and is more likely a rookie chance. “Bailey is on the radar. He played on the

best forwards for us, which put him on a big learning curve.” Switkowski won the Knights’ best and fairest award and played for Vic Metro, but Kennedy said the large number of good players at his height could affect his chances. He thought McDonagh was a Matthew Suckling-type, who came off half-back with a booming kick. Kennedy said that while Zach Ballard was a chance of being picked up, he would most likely go through the VFL system next year to work on his finishing skills. Tara Murray
Kyle Langford Ivanhoe Grammar/Knights Likely to be the first Knights player to go in the draft and should find himself a home by the end of the second round. He can play both ends of the ground and has endurance, running a 14.6 beep test at the national combine. Jason Castagna Warrandyte/Marcellin College/ Knights A small-medium defender who’s known for taking on his opponents and his run and carry. He has speed and endurance, and tested well in both the 20-metre sprint and beep test. Can also play forward if needed. Jayden Short Mill Park/Knights A late-season bolter, Short’s disposal is the key to his game. Loves to kick long and had the best kicking efficiency in the TAC Cup this season. A broken jaw meant he played only 13 games in 2014, meaning he missed try-outs for the Vic Metro team.
