Teen parties end badly By Lexi Cottee The owner of an Epping pizza shop wants to put a stop to underage dance parties at the town’s memorial hall because of violent teenagers. Whittlesea council’s youth services team holds regular dance parties for under 18-year-olds at the newly renovated Epping Memorial Hall in High Street. About 500 people aged 12 to 17 attended the most recent party on Friday, November 28. Later in the night, a group of teenagers was declined entry to the hall because of unruly behaviour. According to one youth worker, they were kicking doors and picking fights. The group refused to leave so security guards called police for assistance. At least six police members arrived and the group was officially told to move on. One of the teenagers kicked a window of the Mr Pizza shop, 500 metres from the memorial hall, shattering the glass. Taha Gurkan, whose father owns Mr Pizza, said these sorts of incidents happened every time underage parties were held at the hall. “They pick fights. These kids think they’re untouchable because of their age,” he said. “They’re 14 or 15-year-olds from Roxburgh Park and Broadmeadows.” Epping-based Sergeant Brad Turney said a number of teens had been charged with assault-related matters in the past. “The pattern is, we get kids coming from the north-western suburbs and they seem to be intent on causing trouble,” he said. A 17-year-old Point Cook youth was kinghit outside the pizza shop on the night of the November 28 dance. He could still not see out of his left eye a week later when Star Weekly went to press.
Police speak with youths after an incident at Mr Pizza in Epping. (Lexi Cottee)
Next year Mr Gurkan will start a petition in a bid to stop the council’s underage parties or have them moved elsewhere. Whittlesea’s acting family services manager, Jane Price, said six youth workers and 14 security guards were rostered on that night. “On this occasion we declined a group of young people entry due to bad behaviour and had some issues moving them on, so the police
were called,” she said. “It appears to be … young people from another municipality … causing problems outside this event.” Ms Price said the council had a comprehensive risk management plan in place. Police are urging members of the public to contact Crime Stoppers or First Constable Paul Somerfield on 9409 8100 with any information about the offenders.

Three more hit NBN jackpot Craigieburn, Whittlesea and Sunbury are next in line for high-speed broadband. NBN Co announced the new national rollout plan last Monday, revealing the next 1.9 million homes and businesses set to receive the National Broadband Network. The new national construction plan aims to connect another 400 cities, suburbs and towns to the NBN by June 2016 as part of the target of eight million connections by 2020. An estimated 105,900 premises are earmarked for connection across 19 Melbourne suburbs. NBN Co chief executive Bill Morrow said the company was committed to bringing fast broadband to all Australians as quickly as possible. An NBN Co spokesman said there was no time frame for the rollout in areas not included on the latest maps. “Over the course of the next 18 months things will start to happen,” he said. “We’ll provide quarterly updates and information more regularly when work begins.” The federal member for McEwan, Rob Mitchell, said Mernda and Doreen were victims of broken NBN promises. “Mernda and Laurimar are not on the NBN rollout map just released and will be stuck with poor broadband quality and access until at least 2016,” he said. “That is despite Malcolm Turnbull promising that areas that had the poorest broadband, like Mernda, would get the NBN first,” Mr Mitchell said. Despite winning the hotly contested seat of Yan Yean in the state election, Labor MP Danielle Green has been demoted from the party’s front bench. Ms Green was Labor’s spokeswoman on family violence and women when in opposition, but the position went to Fiona Richardson in Premier Daniel Andrews’ first cabinet. Star Weekly contacted Mr Andrews for comment. Police are seeking witnesses to a domestic assault near Meadow Glen athletics track carpark about 6.15pm on Tuesday, November 11. Police were told a 36-year-old man arrived at the carpark in a Ford Falcon, approached a 27-year-old woman and her two-year-old son, grabbed her by the hair and punched her and the child. He then walked towards Epping police station. Anyone with information should call Whittlesea family violence unit on 9407 3333.

Tree prepared, say Scouts Sunbury residents can help foster the growth of local Scouts by buying a freshly cut Christmas tree this Saturday. Members of the 3rd Sunbury Scouts, who range in age from six to their mid-20s, will be on hand to help people choose the perfect tree as part of the group’s annual fundraiser. Joey Scout leader Marlow Aisbett says proceeds will go towards the upkeep of the Scout hall and help families give children the chance to attend major events such as national jamborees, which can cost many hundreds of dollars. Trees, from $40 each, will be available from the Scout hall in Miller Street from 9am-3pm. Delivery in Sunbury costs $10. For another $10, the Scouts will pick up trees for disposal on January 4 next year. For more details, phone 0412 104 008. Matt Crossman

Lalor Primary School pupils can pretend they’re Apple employees in Silicon Valley. Using just a pile of scrap computer parts, the kids are being taught how to build their own hard-drives. The tiny computers they are creating will be based on Raspberry Pi, a credit card-sized computer that has been designed to improve computer literacy for this already tech-savvy generation. Whittlesea council staff from the Epping depot are running a 10-week pilot program with Lalor Primary School pupils in
grades 3 and 5 using computers donated by La Trobe University. The children will be taught how to build and label the different hardware components, how to use applications that will help with their school work, how to program games and even how to control robots. Raspberry Pi workshops will be held in late January at Mill Park, Thomastown and Lalor libraries. Bookings are essential. Contact Kylie Carlson on 9437 8189. Lexi Cottee

Under the circumstances, the driver of the shiny black Audi four-wheel-drive had executed the park quite well. The car had been left squarely between the lines in the carpark at the back of the Laurimar shopping centre. From a distance it glistened in the last light of the day, but up close it was battered and bruised. The front bumper and headlight were smashed, its rims were pockmarked and there was a puncture wound on the passenger side door. Two windows were still down and a single black sock with pink heel and two black loafers appeared to have been flung from the car in haste. When Epping-based Sergeant Brad Turney arrived at the scene his initial assessment was that it was a dumped stolen car. “We’ll call the crime desk to come down and check it for fingerprints before it’s towed,” he said. But the arrival of another divisional police car at the other end of the carpark produced the missing black and pink sock and a dishevelled and barefoot middle-aged man. He was dropping in and out of consciousness, slurring his words and couldn’t recall how he’d come to be in the carpark. Police called paramedics, secured his car and tracked down his wife. The incident was just one of many attended to by police members from the Epping police station last Friday night. Earlier in the evening, a missing Lalor

Joe Debono’s strength has no end, with the 40-year-old continuing to push the limits in powerlifting. The Craigieburn resident won two masters titles in the 90-kilogram category at the world powerlifting championships in Sydney recently. He took home gold in the three-lift event, which involves the best overall score for squat lift, deadlift and bench press. “I was expecting to get bronze,” Debono said. “I’d been training really hard and had improved since the national titles. “I thought that if I put in a big score it would make a lot of people nervous and I did what I had to do.” His second gold, in the single-lift deadlift, wasn’t so much a surprise. “I’m already the world record-holder in that

Dogs at a ‘killing party’ Graham Kiper and his wife were in their Craigieburn backyard when they heard a woman screaming. When they heard her cry, “Get it off me”, Mr Kiper bolted across the reserve behind their property, crossed Aitken Creek and found a bloodied woman lying on the ground with two rottweilers nudging her like a piece of meat. “When she tried to move they muzzled her back down,” he said. One of dogs grabbed the woman by the neck and shook her, he said. The other then lunged for her exposed throat. Mr Kiper threw himself on one of the dogs, grabbing it by the skin of its neck and using his body weight to subdue it. He was able to do the same with the other dog and managed to keep the animals on the ground for 20 minutes while waiting for police, paramedics and a ranger.

“It was a long time waiting for the police covered in blood and dog saliva,” Mr Kiper said. Mr Kiper’s act of bravery that December evening three years ago did not go unnoticed. Late last month, on behalf of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia, Victorian Governor Alex Chernov awarded him a medal at the annual bravery awards. Time hasn’t diluted his memory of the event, which the 55-year-old describes as “surreal”. “They were on a killing party those dogs,” he said. The victim, Kylie Gillatt, and her husband, Mark, who was bitten and tried to seek assistance before Mr Kiper’s arrival, remain traumatised by the event. Kylie suffered puncture wounds, while Mark has a metal plate in his arm.

Dairy duo milk life to the max Well before the sun comes up, octogenarian Mary Williamson and husband Merv jump on dirt bikes and round-up their holstein herd to start milking. The Whittlesea couple are the last remaining dairy farmers in the region. They took over their 300-hectare farm from Mary’s parents 55 years ago and to this day continue to run a small dairy enterprise supplying milk for Thomastown-based cheese maker Floridia. Last month Floridia’s ricotta was crowned Australia’s champion fresh unripened cheese at the 2015 Australian Grand Dairy Awards, a gong that also attests to the quality of the Williamsons’ produce. Despite urban sprawl threatening to knock on their door and significant challenges facing their industry, the pair operate the same way they did when starting out in the late 1950s. “We stay away from technology,” Merv said. Mary said they keep a mobile phone at home only in case of emergencies and still do their bookkeeping by hand. The couple initially sent their milk to Bendigo before the Montalto family, which owns and runs Floridia Cheese, came along requesting their product. They’ve been supplying the company for 15 years and maintain a healthy friendship as well as a working relationship. Mary isn’t happy about the changes to the area that they’ve witnessed. About 60 years ago there were about 60 dairy farms in the region. “There’s too many people and traffic on the roads,” she said. Each year they take a holiday for five days while their son, Murray, looks after the farm. He followed in his parents’ footsteps and

By David Bonnici The crowd parts on the promenade revealing three samba dancers wearing little more than feathers, sequinned fabric swatches and tans. Under sunny skies onlookers move to the Latin beat, being careful not to make eye contact with the girls for fear of being pulled into the dance. On the beach, surf lifesavers practise drills alongside several soccer pitches marked into the sand for a tournament featuring police officers from around the state. The friendly police presence extends to the foreshore lawns with officers letting kids and young women sit on highway patrol motorbikes and in a Porsche decked out in police colours that ironically attracts the attention of local rev heads. It’s a typical sunny Sunday at Coogee. This beautiful Sydney beach suburb doesn’t share the fame or pretentiousness (by Sydney standards) of nearby Bondi, but it isn’t exactly a sleepy hollow either. The bustling village provides an interesting balance in being upmarket while still proving popular with backpackers, families and daytripping locals young and old. On any warm day the shady foreshore lawns are packed with people of varied ages and cultural demographics, yet the beach itself is big enough to find your own place on the sand. I must confess to preferring the proverbial long walks by the sea to lying on the beach, and there’s no shortage of those here, whether in the form of a stroll along the promenade or a more energetic hike to neighbouring beaches along the famous Bondi to Coogee Walk. This
six-kilometre cliff-top path has stunning views of the ocean, bays and beaches including Tamarama, Maroubra and Bronte. It’s also an interesting route for peoplewatching, with joggers weaving their way between family groups, couples and chatty women in trendy fitness gear. A medium-grade walk with some steep gradients and steps, it’s doable for most fitness levels, though if you need a breather there are plenty of places to stop, from benches and beaches to bars and cafes. One of the more intriguing segments of the trail is through Waverley Cemetery, which would have to be one of the most scenic graveyards in the world. While Bondi and Coogee beaches are big stretches of sand and surf, there are a few small protected inlets in between, such as Gordons Bay and Clovelly Beach, which provide an

opportunity for other activities such as snorkelling and stand-up paddle boarding. Away from the water, Coogee has a host of bars, cafes and restaurants ranging from the big and boisterous Coogee Bay Hotel to hip little joints off the main drag. Seeking the latter, we were happy to heed a recommendation to book a table at the newish Café de France on Havelock Street. This little place is a relaxed cafe by day and elegant French bistro in the evening (Thursday to Saturday) with authentic Gallic cuisine. We were served by the owner herself, French ex-pat foodie Rafaele Yon, who read out each menu item in a way that made us want to try the lot. We settled on sharing the 800-gram rib-eye steak (pour deux) – beautifully pan fried and tender and served with roasted vegetables. It was more than enough for the two of us, so
much so we opted to share dessert: the rich, sublime chocolate mousse. The prices here are very reasonable, with main meals averaging around $30. Be sure to book for dinner and check if they have their liquor licence yet to save you the run down to Coogee Bay Hotel’s bottle shop. I look forward to having brunch there some day, though there are plenty of options including Ms Yon’s original establishment Le Petite Café and The Little Kitchen, a cute place with nice big rustic benches and a full view of the galley that gives this place its name. As well as great coffee, they do nice breakfast fare with a good balance of fancy and healthy options and the ever popular bacon and eggs. It is also open for lunch and dinner. For pub grub we tried out Five O’s, which serves up decent nosh at bargain prices, making
it popular with backpackers. Score a balcony table here, to gaze out over the beach and catch the ocean breeze. It’s a good place for a drink if you prefer something quieter than the Coogee Bay or Coogee Sands hotels, with a decent range of beers and wines. You have to order food to have a drink here; a bowl of chips does the trick. Accommodation options abound in Coogee. In the mid range is the Dive Hotel, which fortunately doesn’t live up to its name. This boutique family-run hotel is perfectly situated on Arden Street across the road from the beach with prices ranging from around $200 to $320 per night depending on the room and view. It’s an old building but the rooms are nicely renovated with bright contemporary beach house décor. The king-size bed in our airy
ocean view room (one of three with such views) was very comfortable and if there wasn’t so much to do outside you’d be forgiven for just chilling in there all day. Continental breakfast is included, which provides a good opportunity to speak with the owners, who are long-time Coogee residents and full of advice about things to see, do and eat. It’s a lot more welcoming than chain hotels and quite a few of my fellow patrons were return customers.
