Swimming’s so much my thing EMILY, 4, OF SOUTH MORANG

Water babies flocked to Thomastown Recreation and Aquatic Centre over summer. According to Whittlesea council figures, almost 40,000 residents visited the Main Street pool between December 1 and January 12, with members and those enrolled in swimming classes accounting for more than 62 per cent of visits. Centre manager Gareth Dowell said it had been a typical start to the year, and he put the pool’s popularity down to its size and relatively new facilities. “It’s the largest pool in the municipality and it’s perhaps more family-friendly,” he said. In the same period, more than 5500 people went swimming at Mill Park Leisure Centre and just over 4000 visited Whittlesea Swim Centre. Lexi Cottee

Hot fuel ‘rips off’ drivers By Lexi Cottee Whittlesea councillor Ken Harris has stepped up his campaign to stop petrol stations “ripping off” consumers at the bowser. Cr Harris, 70, who owned an independent service station in Reservoir for 24 years, said petrol station operators were cheating consumers by selling overheated fuel. Fuel is sold to petrol stations from refineries at an agreed standard temperature of 15 degrees. Cr Harris explained that when the fuel

heats up, its volume expands and distorts the measure at the pump, and the price paid. “When the consumer buys fuel from the service station, they are paying for an expanded fuel, which is not an accurate litre measurement,” he said. According to Cr Harris’s estimations, fuel is usually delivered to petrol stations at about 36 degrees. Environment Protection Authority laws introduced in 2003 require petrol to be stored in double-walled tanks, which means it takes longer for fuel to cool down.

Mr Harris wants the federal government to amend the oil code legislation to force major oil companies and service station operators to correct the measurement of fuel at the pump to the 15-degree standard. “I’m doing this because the public is being ripped off,” Cr Harris said. He is currently in talks with the National Measurement Institute (NMI), Australia’s peak body for biological, chemical, legal, physical and trade measurements. The South Morang resident was asked by NMI to draft a letter requesting the legislative

change and include details of his research into the issue. His meeting with the NMI was facilitated by McEwan MP Rob Mitchell, who met with Cr Harris last October. Mr Mitchell then passed on Cr Harris’s research to federal Industry Minister Ian MacFarlane. Cr Harris said all that was needed to protect consumers at the pump was an inexpensive electronic chip, which would automatically adjust the price at the pump according to the temperature of the fuel. 10009447-01-a6May©MMP

New medical centre hits snags By Lexi Cottee A Craigieburn medical centre is struggling to stay afloat amid flagged cuts to Medicare and sluggish patronage at the new Craigieburn Central. Late last week Health Minister Susan Ley scrapped plans to impose a $20 reduction in the Medicare rebates for a short visit to the GP. The move followed news that Labor and independent senators would overturn the bill when Parliament resumes next month. But speculation about cuts to Medicare was enough to make the owners of Craigieburn Central Medical Centre fearful.

Craigieburn resident and practising nurse of 20 years Leanne Boase co-owns the practice with two doctors. She said the federal government’s Medicare backdown was a “relief”, but any future changes made to the scheme would affect the viability of their business. “We’re already running pretty lean as a new practice,” she said. “We have minimal nursing hours and have minimised all operating costs, including staff, as much as we can.” When talk of introducing a mandatory $7 co-payment on Medicare services began last year, Ms Boase cut back her hours until she was only working one day a week.

‘‘

We’re already running pretty lean as a new - Leanne Boase practice

’’

“I had to go and get a job. I couldn’t justify paying myself and I wanted to keep our staff.” She said slow foot traffic in the new Craigieburn Central had exacerbated the problem. “We anticipated our patient numbers to increase more quickly than they have,” she said. “Now that business in the shopping centre is increasing, we can hope it does for us, too.”

Ms Boase said the current freeze on Medicare rebates until July 2018 added insult to injury. “It’s not enough to maintain a modern, medical practice. Medicare is not keeping pace with the overheads,” she said. According to Medicare data, 88 per cent of all doctor visits in the federal electorate of McEwan were bulk-billed. More than 44,000 people have signed a petition created by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners that calls on the federal government to stop targeting GP patient services. Ms Ley was in formal talks with the general practice community last week.

Wollert backs the snail mail tracks Elsa and Angelo Tartaggia will receive mail to their home address for the first time this week. For years the retired couple have collected their mail from Wollert post office, as have other residents living on Boundary, Epping, Lehmanns, Andrews, Bodycoats roads and half the people of Harvest Home Road, who were not serviced by Australia Post. Last July, operators of Wollert post office decided to hand back their licence and Australia Post was unable to find another local business to take on the post. That forced Wollert residents to travel to

Mernda to collect their mail, a change that upset locals, many of whom are retired or elderly. Boundary Road resident Pat Micellota was among them and took his grievances to federal McEwan MP Rob Mitchell. “Mernda is a long way for elderly residents to travel,” Mr Micellota said. “It wasn’t an acceptable solution.” He was not the only resident to get on the blower to Mr Mitchell, who quickly took heed and contacted Australia Post to find a solution. Residents were then surveyed about the type of mail delivery they preferred. Sixty-five

per cent were in favour of home delivery, so Australia Post agreed to introduce the service, and to expand into some areas for the first time. Australia Post is now urging residents to confirm they have letterboxes in place this week by contacting the Epping delivery manager on 13 13 18. A spokeswoman said letterboxes must be accessible to delivery drivers. Residents can also continue to collect their mail at Mernda post office. Lexi Cottee

More than 200 unregistered vehicles were detected on roads in Hume and Whittlesea during Victoria Police’s holiday road blitz. The 52-day Summer Stay campaign combined four operations targeting drink and drug driving, distraction and seatbelt offences, speeding and fatigue. Provisional results for the Hume police service area show speeding is still of concern, with 302 speeding offences issued, compared to 114 in Whittlesea. Police caught 126 drivers in unregistered vehicles in Whittlesea and 78 in Hume. There were 23 people driving without a licence in Hume and 36 in Whittlesea. No one was found driving under the influence of drugs in Hume, but five drug-drivers were caught in Whittlesea. Forty-one people were busted using their mobile phone while driving in Whittlesea, and 16 were caught in Hume. Of the 522 drivers caught flouting the law in Hume, five per cent were drink drivers. In Whittlesea, eight per cent of the 462 drivers tested were over 0.05. Across Victoria, police intercepted 27,651 speeding drivers, 2553 drinkdrivers and 816 drug-drivers. Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said there was still far too much risk-taking on the roads. “If everyone stays alert, sober and within the speed limit then we will take a major step towards our goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on the road,” he said. Diabetes trial for mums-to-be (Shawn Smits)

By Lexi Cottee Pregnant women living in Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs are about three times more likely to be diagnosed with gestational diabetes than the national average. A Northern Health spokeswoman said about one in six pregnant women present with gestational diabetes, while the national average is one in 20 pregnant women. Most at risk are women who are overweight and those with a family history of type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes is diagnosed when a woman’s blood glucose levels increase during pregnancy, typically around the 24th to 28th week. Maternal blood glucose levels usually return to normal after the birth of the baby. However, these mothers have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

‘‘

It saves on visits to hospitals and the phone tag - Kwang Lim women play

’’

Northern Hospital is now trialling a program to remotely manage diabetes in pregnant women. The free trial uses technology to safely monitor the disease and reduce the number of medical appointments required, lessening the burden on pregnant women. Associate Professor Kwang Lim, Northern Health’s chief medical officer and clinical director for medicine, has supervised the trial for the past four months in partnership with the University of Melbourne’s department of general practice, and he hopes its success will pave the way for an expansion of the same technology to monitor other diseases.

SANDRA PASCUZZI WITH 9-WEEK-OLD SON MAX

“The trial provides patients with the ability to log their blood-sugar levels into an online system so doctors can then message them what insulin dosage they should be taking,” Associate Professor Lim said. “It saves on visits to hospitals and the phone tag women play with their nurses and doctors.” So far, about 20 patients have taken part in the trial. Northern Health is hoping to sign up another 80 patients within the next 12 months.

Sandra Pascuzzi, of Thomastown, signed up for the trial while pregnant with her third child last November. The 34-year-old mother of three was hospitalised for five days to rebalance her insulin levels when first diagnosed with gestational diabetes while pregnant with her second child. While she was expecting a change in her insulin levels with her third pregnancy, she said the way her diabetes was

managed throughout the trial made her feel more in control. “It was much easier not having to make an appointment and wait around at the hospital every two weeks,” she said. Eligible expectant mothers can register their interest in joining the trial by contacting the Northern Health endocrinologist, diabetes nurse educator or Northern Health TeleGDM trial co-ordinator Tshepo Rasekaba on 8405 8399 or email tshepo.rasekaba@nh.org.au.

Grant helps Anzac story play out By Lexi Cottee A Dallas-based community group for Greek migrants has been awarded almost $15,000 to produce a play commemorating the Anzacs. The Greek Australian Recreational and Instructive League of Victoria Inc (GARILV) was one of five local organisations to share in more than $90,000 from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program to honour this year’s Anzac centenary.

The volunteer group writes and presents plays with culturally and linguistically diverse communities and new migrants. Athens-born Campbellfield resident Thekla Scarcella – a writer, poet and GARILV president – has written Australians in Gallipoli, which she intends to be performed in Greek and English. Ms Scarcella wants to commemorate the Anzacs to mark the centenary of World War 1. “It will provide a snapshot of the war and bring to life the historical significance of

the Anzacs for Greeks and new migrants,” she said. The group’s $14,950 grant will enable the production to go ahead and fund a book and DVD on the same theme. Other recipients include the Keilor Historical Society, which was awarded $25,000 to produce a book and DVD to raise awareness of the names on the World War 1 honour roll at Keilor. The Turkish sub-branch of the Victorian

RSL plans to construct a friendship memorial sculpture with $10,000 from the grant; the Australian Chaldean Federation of Victoria received $28,500 for booklets and DVDs; and $12,000 was awarded to the Flynn Group to host an event called Snapshots of War. Federal Labor Member for Calwell, Maria Vamvakinou, said: “This year’s centenary of Anzac commemorates the sacrifices made by many Australian men and women to defend and protect our way of life.”

Pocket savings worth every cent

(Shawn Smits)

For every item of cutlery 10-year-old Laura lays on the table, her mother Karen gives her five cents as pocket money. The same goes for every chore she helps Karen with around the house, from folding the laundry and emptying the dishwasher to matching odd socks and vacuuming her bedroom. “I’m trying to teach her the value of money,” Karen said. Laura plans to save her pennies to buy a car when she turns 18, and her saving techniques haven’t gone unnoticed. The Bundoora resident was last week named the winner of CommBank’s Search for Australia’s Smart School Savers competition. The national competition called for school children to share their savings goals and gave advice for achieving them. The St Francis of Assisi Primary School pupil won an iPad for herself and one for the school. Lexi Cottee

For hundreds of years the Olympic Games have shown how sport can transcend politics and bridge cultural divisions. Cricket Victoria’s asylum seeker and refugee cricket tournaments are organised with the same intention, with the addition of spruiking the accessibility and welcoming nature of the game among Australia’s newest residents. The most recent carnival took place at Jacana Reserve in Broadmeadows last Thursday. Despite rainy weather and strong winds, about 80 asylum seekers and refugees attended to play a modified eight-a-side match with all equipment, coaches and first aid provided by Cricket Victoria. Super clinic on way, despite cuts The $12 million Hume GP Super Clinic is on track to open next month. Work began on the long-awaited medical centre in Coleraine Street last February. Just a month later, then Health Minister Mary Wooldridge rejected Dianella Community Health’s application to continue its community mental health support services. Dianella was forced to close its psychiatric disability rehabilitation and support services, and 12 staff were made redundant. The organisation also lost more than five per cent of its funding – about $1.25 million – but work progressed on its new centre regardless. Dianella will provide medical services at the new site from February 2. The double-storey centre with modern fluoro accents will also feature physiotherapy, podiatry, radiology, pathology, cardiology and pharmacy services, all under the one roof. Dianella Community Health chief executive Neil Cowen stressed that the Super Clinic’s medical services were available to everyone, including refugees, asylum seekers and people without a health care card. “It’s a health precinct available to everyone,” he said. “There will be three interpreters on site and many staff are multi-lingual.” The clinic will offer after-hours services and be open for normal business trading hours on Sundays. An official opening and ribbon cutting will be held on February 16, featuring an indigenous “site cleansing” and dancing. Dr Cowen says Dianella will vacate its current premises at Northern Hospital and appointments from February onwards can be made using the existing phone number.

Top service nets award By Lexi Cottee A children’s version of tennis, played with wooden bats, was being offered in many Victorian primary schools instead of the real game up until three years ago. But long-time head coach of Greenvale and Craigieburn tennis clubs Tim Connelly has managed to convince local schools to offer “tennis hot shots” – a program that teaches children tennis on smaller courts with racquets built for little hands. Within a five-kilometre radius, 11 schools and tennis clubs now offer the program, largely because of Connelly’s drive to attract children to the game. Participating schools include Aitken College, and Greenvale, St Carlo Boromeo and Gladstone Park primary schools. Connelly’s services to tennis were recently recognised when he took out a Tennis Australia award for coaching excellence. His trot up to the podium to accept the gong closely followed that of rising star Nick Kyrgios, who took out the Newcombe Medal as ‘Australia’s most outstanding tennis player in 2014’. Connelly’s award capped his 25th year as a tennis coach, but his connection to the Greenvale club stretches back further, to his days as a 10-year-old battling it out on court, hoping one day to make it to the professional circuit. “I played at a fairly high level against [Jason] Stoltenberg, Wayne Arthur and the like, but I was smart enough to know that if I

wanted to make a career out of it I needed to get into coaching or be involved some other way,” the 44-year-old said. He now runs Complete Tennis and has a team of 15 coaches operating from Greenvale, Craigieburn and Wallan. Next month they will move to the $8 million Hume Tennis and Community Centre.

KNOW YOUR GRASSFIRE RISK THIS SUMMER

If you live near open grassland, parks, paddocks or reserves, you could be impacted by grassfire.

IT’S UP TO YOU TO KNOW WHAT TO DO IF A FIRE STARTS. DO YOU LIVE ONE OR TWO STREETS AWAY FROM GRASSLAND? Stay inside your home – grassfires are unlikely to spread past the first row of houses Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond

DO YOU LIVE ON A FENCELINE NEXT TO GRASSLAND? If a fire starts, quickly move one or two streets away from the fenceline or park boundary Act early, even if you haven’t received a warning Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond

Remember, it’s up to you to monitor weather conditions and warnings. Always keep an eye on the conditions outside - you may be aware of a fire before emergency services. If you see smoke or flames, call Triple Zero (000).

SPORT A platform for footy and life By Tara Murray As the Calder Cannons celebrate 20 years in the TAC Cup, the list of players who have represented the club makes interesting reading. Dane Swan, Jude Bolton, James Kelly and Paul Chapman are among those who spring to mind and all are likely to be named in the club’s team of the past 20 years at a hall of fame dinner on January 31. For two-time AFL premiership player and the club’s first AFL draftee, Darren Milburn, joining the Cannons was a leap into the unknown. “Being the first year in, everyone was unsure how it would work,” Milburn said.

“We trained out at the showgrounds … it wasn’t the ideal set up, but we made it with what we had. “For a country kid from Kilmore, it meant playing against the top players and trying to learn and adapt and ultimately get drafted. “I only spent one year at the club, but I’m grateful for what people did for me. It was a great stepping stone.” Milburn said there wasn’t a standout in that inaugural Cannons line-up. “It was a good side and anyone could have been drafted first,” he said. “Ashley Fernee went to Adelaide and David Round went as a father-son pick [to Footscray]. It makes me feel old [that it’s 20 years ago].”

Milburn is these days coaching players who have come from the Cannons in his role as an assistant coach at Adelaide. They include one of the latest draftees, Jake Lever. “It’s a great system and has developed over the past 20 years to be a great set up,” he said They may have been at the club 20 years apart, but current Cannons player Mark Kovacevic is just as grateful as Milburn for his time at the club. “It has been a whirlwind and it feels like I joined yesterday,” Kovasevic said. “It’s great at providing a platform for football and for life. I didn’t know what to expect … it was a lot more professional than what I expected.”

With many of his friends drafted, Kovacevic was given the opportunity to play a third year at the club. He said the idea of returning to the Cannons as a 19-year-old was very appealing. “It was a very quick decision to make,” he said. “It’s a privilege to be part of the Cannons.” The hall of fame function, at which the club will induct its inaugural hall of fame members, will be held at the Victory Room at Etihad Stadium on January 31. Tickets cost $100 for a three-course meal and drinks. For more details, go to www.caldercannons. aflvic.com.au or email cannons@sub.net.au.

Injury woes forgotten as Bats fire again

Clayton Campbell scored two 70s for the North West Wizards. (Wayne Hawkins)

Wizards, Falcons swept up by Rivers North West Wizards and Northern Falcons have seen first hand the strength of the Northern Rivers side, which last week shunted both out of the Victorian Bushrangers under-18 championships. The Wizards finished second in their group but went out in the qualifying finals at the Albert Ground. The Falcons were knocked out in the semifinals at Melbourne University. For the Wizards the performance was a huge improvement on the previous two years, when they finished last and second-last. “It was a bit disappointing to go out, but we did well to get to that stage,” coach Dale McDonald said. “Against the Northern Rivers we batted first and were about 40 short and we didn’t make the most of the opportunities.

“We then dropped a guy on 35 and he went on to make 100 and he was the difference. If we’d held that catch it would have been the difference.” McDonald said some players didn’t play as well as they’d have liked, while others had taken the next step. “Aaron Evans made 50-odd in the last game coming in at number five when he had been batting lower. He consolidated our innings,” McDonald said. “Liam Molloy, our captain, batted well and Clayton Campbell made a couple of 70s.” He said six of the players could be selected in the side again next year. “There weren’t many expectations on the squad and it was a good effort to get where we did,” McDonald said. The Falcons lost only one game for the

championship, the semi-final against the Rivers when they really let their chances slip. “Key opportunities went begging with dropped catches that would have restricted the total,” Falcons coach Kevin Lowe said. “They took the chances and fielded well” It was deja vu for the Falcons, who also fell in the semis in the previous two years. “This year we really gelled together as a side,” Lowe said. “Previously we had individual standouts, but this time everyone was around the same level. “I’m very proud of the attitude and most of them are bottom-age, so they’ll be back again next year.” Lowe said Luke Joyce had been the standout for the side with both bat and ball. Tara Murray

After struggling with injuries in the lead-up to Christmas, Plenty Valley is primed for a tilt at top spot in Sub-District cricket’s north-west division. After going through 2013-14’s regular season unbeaten, this time around the Bats lost two games within three weeks, placing them third on the ladder. Their fortunes have changed for the better. After not getting on the park last week because of rain, the Bats came out firing in their two-day clash against Sunshine at the weekend. “It was our third clean sweep in a row and we had a well and truly comfortable win in the seniors,” captain-coach Michael Sheedy said. “We made 250 and got them out for a reasonable score [137] so there are plenty of good signs. “After not playing last week and having a couple of good weeks on the track they were chomping at the bit.” Sheedy top-scored with 126 in the Bats’ imposing 7-256. “It was good to be able to contribute especially on a tough wicket after we were sent in,” he said. Sheedy said the return of Justin Jaensch was massive for the side and he would be joined by other regulars next week. “Justin took four wickets and he has been out for six weeks,” he said. “We had three or four players back in this week and we’ll have another three back into the ones and twos next week.” The Bats now sit second on the ladder. “We have to play Melton [which is top] on the run home, so finishing top is in our own hands,” Sheedy said. The weekend wasn’t as kind to ladder leaders Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows, who lost to Yarraville. A return of the batting woes which marred the side early in the season saw the Falcons all out for 104. Simpson Obed top scored with 27, while Adam Yates was the only other batsman to pass 20. Yarraville closed at 0-54 on day one. Day 2 on Sunday was the Matthew Love show as he scored his third century of the season as Yarraville finished on 4-273. In turf cricket’s senior division, Tullamarine and Greenvale Kangaroos pulled off surprise wins against St Bernards and Hoppers Crossing respectively. Tara Murray 13 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 20, 2015

SPORT NORTHERN.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Almost a great weekend By Tara Murray Greenvale Kangaroos started the new year with a win and a loss when Victorian Premier Cricket finally resumed at the weekend after the Christmas break and a first-day washout. The Roos beat Frankston Peninsula at Greenvale Oval on Saturday, limiting the visitors to 9-173 in their 50 overs then reaching the target with two wickets and almost two overs to spare. Only opener Samuel Wise was able to get any momentum in Frankston’s innings, making 71 before falling with the score at 142. With 3-28, all-rounder Jack Shantry was best of the Greenvale bowlers. The Kangaroos started poorly in reply, both openers back in the sheds with only 22 on the board. Captain James Lidgett and Tony Ura then settled the innings and when Ura’s then Ben Cox’s wickets fell, Lidgett was joined by Shantry. The two continued to push the score along and the Roos were just 36 from victory when Lidgett was run out for 52. The Roos were wobbling when Shantry was run out for 42 and Luke Sandy ‘did’ a hamstring, but the bowlers got them over the line. It was almost two wins in as many days, as the Kangaroos fell just short in the T20 match against St Kilda at Junction Oval on Sunday. St Kilda made a gettable 6-138, with Jack Shantry the best of the bowlers with two wickets. In reply, the middle order of James Lidgett (30) and Ben Cox (41) gave the Kangaroos a chance of reaching the target. But when both fell with the score on 104, the Kangaroos’ hopes plummetted. Craigieburn’s hopes of finishing in the top two of Bowls Victoria Metropolitan Pennant division 2, section 2 have received a boost with a comprehensive win over top side Broadmeadows. Sitting third entering round 13, Craigieburn didn’t let Broadmeadows get into the game at all, winning all four rinks with ease for a 18-92 to 0-55 scoreline. The win moves Craigieburn to second on the ladder, with Broadmeadows slipping to third. In the premier division, Bundoora RSL cemented its spot in the top four with a win over MCC Kew Sports. Three of the four rinks were close affairs, giving RSL one- and two-shot wins and a draw.
